The road that claims cars and lives

LINDLEY: The appalling state of Free State’s “death trap road” has angered motorists.

Users of the road - R707 between Senekal and Marquard -have laid complaints on its appalling state. Dubbed the “death trap of road”, it has allegedly been neglected by the provincial government. Regular users continue to suffer the neardeath experiences on this 195km regional road. One road user, Lehlohonolo Tau, said most cars that drive on that road are always getting damaged because of the deep potholes. “My car’s windscreen got damaged last month. “I was driving past a truck and it was raining that day. I tried to swerve away from the truck and the truck drove into the potholes and a metal-like object hit my car,” Tau said.

Tau said he has been waiting for his windscreen to be fixed.

Road users have also created a Facebook page called “Revive 707” in the hope that the national government will intervene.

Khaweni Mthimkhulu, another motorist, uses the R707 every day to get to work and said the road has had bad potholes for close to six to seven years now. “The potholes there are very scary,” Mthimkhulu said. He travels 60kms daily between Petrus Steyn and Lindley and has been forced to do wheel alignment to his vehicle every now and then. Mthenjwa Ngwenya had an accident on

the same road in December while driving with his wife. “My wife and I were injured in the accident, but we don’t blame the other driver, we blame the road and people who did not maintain the road,” Ngwenya said. He said he assumed the other driver was also trying to avoid the deep potholes when the accident happened. “You can see the road is like a death road,” Ngwenya said.

However, the motorists’ views on this road seem to clash with last year’s State of the Province Address delivered by Premier Sisi Ntombela in which she said the government had completed maintenance on the R707. “We pledged to construct and maintain critical roads. What is pleasing is that we completed the construction and maintenance of the following roads and centre during 2018/19 - R707 road between Senekal and Marquard,” said Ntombela in her speech. In an attempt to contact the premier for a comment and spokesperson Setjhaba Maphalla referred the query to the provincial department of police, roads and transport.

Hillary Mophethe, spokesperson for the roads department, said they had rehabilitated only 15km of the 195km stretch between 2016 and 2018 to the tune of R56,6million. This, she said, resulted in 360 jobs being created. She did not explain why the road was still in such poor condition.

12 towns in Free State reported the highest stats in last 5 years

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has put through a raft of tough questions to the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, regarding rapidly increasing instances of stock theft. Unchecked stock theft is fast becoming one of the gravest challenges to South African farmers, as they wake each day expecting to find hundreds of their cattle or sheep or goats have been stolen. This on top of

murderous farm attacks, the drought, and the constant threat of expropriation of their farms with zero compensation has our farmers at breaking point.

Between July and September last year, there were 7 339 cases of stock theft countrywide, which saw over 26 300 sheep and 14 000 cattle stolen. In one area of Gauteng alone, it is costing farmers R1 million a month.

Reports are flooding into the DA from every province in the country as stock theft soars.

Sadly, such is their lack of confidence in the South African Police Service (SAPS) today, that frequently farmers don’t bother to report the thefts. In the Eastern Cape (EC) during December, it has been reported that 36 farms suffered thefts of hundreds of animals, and it is known that syndicates are operating from Queenstown to East London. Again, few farmers bother to inform the police of their losses. Why? Because arrests are rare, recoveries of the animals negligible and convictions are barely a blip on the syndicates’ radar. Add into that mix the constant references to links between the syndicates and SAPS members, and that distrust of the SAPS is understandable. 80 EC farmers reported mass stock thefts over the four months from October last year to the end of January this year. As the commercial farmers spend more and more on security cameras and patrols through the night, so the syndicates turn to stealing from emerging farmers whose livelihoods and lives are at equal threat as those of commercial farmers. There are similar reports from the Free State – although it seems the SAPS here have clamped down on giving out any detection or conviction rates.

KwaZulu-Natal has 15 of the top 30 stations in terms of dealing with major stock theft – with 8 in the Eastern Cape, 2 in the Free State and 1 in the North West. These 30 stations represent over 20% of all stock theft in the country. 12 towns in Free State reported the highest stats in last 5 years, with the border towns reflecting the

highest number of thefts.

Gauteng farmers are experiencing an explosion in stock theft, with the Hekpoort/Magalies area losing around R1 million each and every month. This year the trend has skyrocketed, and the horrific numbers in Gauteng prove this. In Tshwane last year there were 51 cases of stock theft reported. In just the first 45 days of this year, there have been 45. On the West Rand there were 38 cases in 2020, and there have been 28 cases in just the first 45 days of this year. Compared with last year, for example, when the Minister of Police finally admitted that stock theft was a nightmare and swore that he would improve the situation, things have gone from bad to worse.

To put it into perspective, according to the National Stock Theft Prevention Forum, livestock to the value of R1.24 billion has been stolen in South Africa during the 2018/2019 year.

In Mpumalanga, there were 865 cases opened involving stock theft in the last quarter, while in North West Province a farmer hired a helicopter to track down his stolen bull to a farm owned by a man who works at the Department of Education as Director-General. On that same farm other cattle were found which belonged to three different owners, and hundreds of other cattle and calves were seized. This only happened because the farmer took it upon himself to search for his R120 000 bull. By highlighting this issue to the Minister, the DA hopes that SAPS may be moved to step away from their interminable in-fighting, and deal with the crime that is hitting our farmers so hard here in South Africa.

Has NSFAS ran out of money?

“South African students deserve to know the truth…”

FREE STATE: Urgent, and desperate calls was made on Tuesday 09 March 2021 to the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Blade Nzimande, to come clean to South Africa and confirm whether the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has run out of money. There seems to be strong evidence pointing in this direction as a number of issues regarding NSFAS have recently come to light; Two weeks ago, NSFAS CEO, Andile Nongogo, announced that certain key study areas won’t be financed on a postgraduate level, and that others won’t be financed at all, in complete contradiction to the Critical Skills List; the uncertainty over whether first-year students and the missing middle would receive NSFAS funding; the debacle around whether students who have received a Special Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant of R350 would be disqualified from NSFAS funding; and the questions regarding the number of first-year students that would be allowed to study at the University of South Africa (UNISA) this year and have been approved for NSFAS funding.

While the SRD grant confusion has since been blamed on an illinformed worker and seemingly cleared up, the fact of the matter is that there is little transparency over who will receive funding from the Scheme. Both NSFAS and the Minister are muddying the water at every turn creating more anxiety for students who have already suffered through a traumatic 2020. The Minister and NSFAS seem to be trying to divert attention from the fact that there does not appear to be enough money to support poor students to access quality education. These tactics have the potential to lead to a massive disruption of South Africa’s higher education institutions, as they will ultimately have to carry the burden and face the ire of disappointed students all because government is failing to communicate openly and honestly with South Africans. Students deserve to know the truth regarding their futures. They need to plan and put contingencies in place should NSFAS fail them.

Keeping them in the dark will only exacerbate the problem.

Soek jy ’n leermeester, iemand wat die Skrif vir jou kan uitlê en kwelvrae oplos? Soek jy na kennis en wysheid? Soek jy dalk ’n vriend, iemand wat jou kan help in tye van nood? Soek jy dalk vis en brood en wil jy wonderwerke beleef? Volg jy Hom omdat almal anders dit doen of omdat jy so groot geword het, omdat dit die “regte” ding is om te doen? Soek jy ’n gemaklike lewe, vry van probleme en bekommernisse? Volg jy Hom sodat Hy in al jou behoeftes kan voorsien en aan al jou eise kan voldoen en jou gebede verhoor? Volg jy Hom dalk net uit nuuskierigheid?

Of dalk sodat jy kan kyk waar jy Hom kan “uitvang”, soos ’n Fariseër of Skrifgeleerde? Dié twee waarvan Joh. 1:38 praat, was volgelinge van Johannes, maar hy het na Jesus gewys en vir hulle gesê: “dáár is die Lam van God wat die sonde van die wêreld wegneem.” (Joh. 1:29) Toe hulle dít hoor het hulle Jesus gevolg. Volg jy Hom omdat jy ’n Verlosser soek, Iemand wat jou sonde kan wegneem, Iemand wat jou die ewige lewe kan gee? Soek jy God se guns en genade? Soek jy aanvaarding en ’n nuwe geestelike familie?

Volg jy Hom omdat jy so desperaat is vir Sy aanraking soos die vrou wat net aan die soom van sy kleed wou raak? Dié twee van Joh. 1:38 se antwoord was: waar gaan U tuis? Miskien wou hulle nie sommer net so in die verbygaan met Hom praat nie, hulle wou lang en diep gesprekke met Hom hê, hulle wou in sy binnekring kom.

Jesus nooi hulle uit na sy woonplek waar hulle sommer ook kon oornag. Dit het my laat dink aan die teks in Jak 4:8 wat sê: nader tot God en Hy sal tot julle nader. Volg Hom en Hy sal omdraai en sê: kom bly by My! Dié twee was natuurlik die eerste dissipels en hulle het nooit opgehou om Hom te volg nie. Om Jesus te volg vra ’n prys, dit vra opofferings, dit vra toewyding, dit vra deursettingsvermoë. Jesus sê self in Matt. 16:24: “As mense my volgelinge wil wees, moet hulle hulle hele lewe vir My gee. Om My te volg is baie moeilik. Dit is net so moeilik soos om jou eie kruis na die plek van jou teregstelling toe te dra. As jy net vir jouself wil lewe, sal jy uiteindelik jou lewe verloor en in die doderyk beland. As jy egter bereid is om jou lewe aan My te wy, sal jy beslis ’n plek kry in God se nuwe wêreld.” Bereken weer die koste en besluit of jy Hom enduit sal volg en wat jou antwoord sal wees as Hy sou vra: Wat soek jy? ~ Wilna Botha

Easiest fish cake recipe ever. It uses tinned tuna and a host of other pantry and fridge staples. It’s delicious and super quick to make.

INGREDIENTS 2 eggs 3 tablespoons mayonnaise 3 cans tuna 1/2 chopped onion 2 tablespoons fresh parsley ( or 1 tablespoon dried) 2 teaspoons dill (optional) 3 tablespoons parmesan 2 tsp lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup breadcrumbs 1/4 cup sunflower oil (or your choice of cooking oil and use 1/2 cup oil for a very wide frying pan) INSTRUCTIONS First whisk the eggs and mayonnaise together until well combined (1 minute) Add the tuna, onion, parsley, dill, parmesan, lemon juice, zest, salt and breadcrumbs.

Use your hands to mix until well combined.

Use your hands to make 10-12 small balls and then flatten slightly to get a patty shape.

In a medium-sized pan, heat the sunflower oil and fry the fish cakes until browned, about 3-4 minutes per side.

Serve warm with a side salad or veg.

EAAB under audit as REBOSA takes to court Having exhausted all other options to rectify ongoing service delivery issues from the Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB), the Real Estate Business Owners of South Africa (REBOSA) has officially engaged in legal action against the regulator. Friday 5 March saw the parties face off in court for the first time, signalling much needed hope for hundreds of estate agents around the country still struggling to get their Fidelity Fund Certificates for 2021. Court isn't the only arena in which the EAAB will need to defend its actions, however. REBOSA has today been made aware of a forensic audit of the EAAB ordered by the Minister for Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu.

"We are extremely thankful to see that Minister Sisulu is taking the EAAB's failures seriously, and that she has initiated investigations into the regulators consistent inability to fulfil their mandate," says Tony Clarke, Chairman of REBOSA.

"This is a very powerful demonstration of support for our industry – support we are grateful to have as we continue to fight for the rights of real estate professionals.“ The scope of the Minister's audit will cover the last 24 months of Fidelity Fund transactions, investments and processes; EAAB staff appointments; tenders and procurement processes; and legal matters attended and financed by the EAAB. Clarke is hopeful that this will finally reveal the root of the regulatory body's service delivery issues which have persisted despite costs over R1.5 million which REBOSA incurred for salaries of people placed at the EAAB to assist with REBOSA member queries. "REBOSA wholeheartedly supports the intended role of the EAAB in implementing the Estate Agency Affairs Act and promoting better transparency, disclosure, accountability and governance in our industry. In its current form, however, the regulator is effectively achieving the exact

opposite."

By shedding light on the underlying cause of the situation, Clarke says Minister Sisulu's audit could become the catalyst needed to transform the EAAB into the positive force it was supposed to be and we hope that the minister will allow transparency in its audit findings and make such available to REBOSA. In the meantime, however, REBOSA will continue its efforts to secure a court order forcing the EAAB to issue all outstanding FFCs to qualified agents. "This is not a matter that can wait," he says. "Without current FFCs, qualified property practitioners are having to choose between committing a criminal offence by working as usual, or not earning a single cent in income until the EAAB gets its act together. It's an untenable situation.

Resolving it must be our primary focus for now. After that, we can look towards solving the broader institutional problems at hand."

The Toyota Urban Cruiser lands in South African showrooms in March 2021. Here's how much you can expect to pay, plus trim levels and specifications for the new model. Hard on the heels of the recently-launched Suzuki Vitara Brezza comes the Toyota-badged equivalent. HEILBRON: On Wednesday, 24 February 2021, Wesdan Boerdery held their production auction in Canossa, Heilbron. It was an outstanding auction with top quality animals that came under the hammer. The top offer provided the following excellent average: Pregnant singles ewes were sold at an average of R 3 000.

Pregnant twin ewes were sold at an average of R 3 450, The most expensive 3 rams were sold for R 21 000 each. They were sold to Mr Hugh Enslin, Mr Wessel Hattingh and Mr Koos Kruger, and the average on the rams was R 10 910.

Cows with calves were sold at an average of R 22 500, Pregnant cows were sold at an average of R 19 333, Pregnant heifers were sold at an average of R21 900.

Open heifers were sold at an average of R 13 250, Weaner calves between 200kg and 250kg were sold at R 10 062, Weaner calves over 250kg were sold at R 10 692. Wesdan Boerdery and BKB Louwid thank all buyers for a successful day.
