A Message ... While we can’t see you all for this year’s celebration, we certainly feel your love! Your collective support in advance of tonight’s program has totaled more than $400k, a record setting amount for this event! And, we hope to raise another $100k during the event for a very special purpose near and dear to us and the Gulf Coast JFCS family—our Holocaust Survivor Program! The importance of each of our philanthropic gifts to Gulf Coast is more evident than ever. This past year has placed enormous stresses on many members of our community, economically and emotionally. Through Gulf Coast JFCS’s broad spectrum of programs and resources, nearly 40,000 members of our community, from babies to seniors will receive the help they need to give them safety, comfort and hope.

Together, we are uplifting lives! FACES of Inspiration: A celebration of the heroes of Gulf Coast JFCS

Faces of Inspiration 2021 Honoree: Betty Goldberg, Holocaust Survivor Program The Nazis came for Betty Goldberg’s father when she was just 9. Yet, a Gentile man who had befriended her father before he was shipped off on a train to Auschwitz, hid her with his family. Through the end of the war, Betty lived under an assumed identity in a separate home from her mother. She survived and miraculously, so did her parents. Betty has been a long time participant in Gulf Coast JFCS’s Holocaust Survivor program, for many years enjoying the social support provided to some 250 Holocaust Survivors in the Tampa Bay region. However as the years passed, Betty’s medical and homecare needs continued to increase. The cost of around the clock care was steadily depleting her personal savings. Gulf Coast JFCS’s Holocaust Survivor Program is helping Betty meet her financial and personal care needs, first facilitating her successful restitution application from the French Railroad Fund and more recently qualifying her for homecare services paid in part by the German Claims Conference. Gulf Coast JFCS is proud to honor Mrs. Betty Goldberg for her positive voice, courage and perseverance.

Congratulations Jan and Craig. We are grateful for all you have done for Gulf Coast JFCS and for the countless lives you have enabled us to assist through your enormous generosity of time, talent, and treasure. - Cindy and Eric Feder -

Jan and Craig, Today is the time to celebrate you both for all you do in our community. Let’s start the celebration by saying congratulations. Love, Sonia Raymund

Dear Barbara, FACES has been a labor of love for many of us; however, without your tenacity and perseverance the project would have never happened. Congratulations on a very deserving recognition. Love, Sonia Raymund

Faces of Inspiration 2021 Honoree Michelle Roller, Safe at Home - Pasco Safe at Home is geared toward helping families stay together - working with families whose children are at risk of being removed from their home due to a variety of factors. Gulf Coast JFCS’s Safe at Home program was Michelle’s “last chance” to take the actions needed to keep her family together. Once she understood Gulf Coast JFCS was here to help and assist her every step of the way, she became empowered to do everything necessary to improve herself and create a positive environment for her family. This involved substance abuse and behavioral counseling for herself, family counseling, parenting classes, and monitoring for substance misuse. Gulf Coast JFCS guided Michelle to access the medical care she needed and mentored her in her job hunting efforts. Increasingly, Michelle demonstrated her strength and conviction to making a better life for her children and to making a bright future for the family. Congratulations to Michelle Roller—2021 FACES Honoree.

Jan and Craig Thank you for your heartfelt support of Gulf Coast over the years. With the support of leaders like you, we are able to achieve our mission of protecting the vulnerable, empowering individuals and strengthening families.

With love, Julie and Scott Klavans

Faces of Inspiration 2021 Honoree Tiffany and Anio Felix, Kinship Support Program Every child deserves a safe and loving home. Tiffany and Anio Felix and Gulf Coast JFCS’s Kinship Support Program stepped in when tragedy struck to make this a reality for two young boys who tragically lost their mother. Gulf Coast JFCS is proud to recognize them as a 2021 FACES of Inspiration Honoree. After losing their mother to an accidental drug overdose, two brothers, 4 and 1 years old, were left without a parent or family member to care for them. But not for long. The Felix family were friends with the boy’s mother and upon her death, knew they should step forward to care for these boys. Already parents to three children, the Felix’s lovingly made this decision even knowing the boys would need a lot of special care to help them through their developmental delays and emotional wounds. The Gulf Coast JFCS Kinship Support Program is supporting the Felix family through their journey of guardianship toward legal adoption, including assisting them to locate needed counseling, medical and educational resources. The ultimate goal of the program is to support guardians to provide happy, loving homes for children who may otherwise be placed in child welfare system.

Mom (Hanny) and Dad (Pops), Thanks for being the TIES THAT BIND not only for our family, but the community at large.

We love you around the world and back infinity times forever and a day. Love, Ali, Jess, Stacy, Will, Paige, Jack, and Shea

2021 Lifetime Achievement Award Jan & Craig Sher So generously sharing their time, wisdom, influence and philanthropic resources for four decades, Jan and Craig Sher are among the most impactful leaders ever during Gulf Coast JFCS’s nearly half century history. Jan served on the Gulf Coast JFCS Board of Directors for 8 years, twice chaired the FACES of Inspiration gala. She currently is serving as an Emeritus Trustee and a member of the Gulf Coast JFS Advisory Board, where she continues to champion Gulf Coast JFCS’s Jewish community outreach, most especially our treasured Holocaust Survivors. Craig’s lasting imprint began with advocacy efforts with state legislators to encourage funding for the growing essential health and human service programs of Gulf Coast JFCS. He also served on the CEO search and selection committee, and continues to provide essential strategic counsel and support as needed. To help Gulf Coast JFCS plan to meet the needs of the Tampa Bay Jewish community, the Shers helped spearhead and fund the 2017 Pinellas/Pasco Jewish Population Study. Yet, the Sher’s commitment and passion to serve doesn’t end with Gulf Coast JFCS. They’ve offered dedicated service to many other local boards and committees including Temple Beth-El, Menorah Manor, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, Shorecrest Preparatory School, Academy Preparatory School, Pinellas Education Foundation, Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation, Dali Museum, The James Museum, Starting Right, Now, and Art Festival Beth-El among many others. They humbly point to the legacy of both of their parents Sonia and Irwin Miller and Anita and Louis Sher as their teachers and role models. For the Sher’s, it’s important to carry forward their parents’ legacies and pass it forward to their children. As Craig says, “At the end of the day, it’s about making the world a better place.”

Mazel tov to our amazing mom/wife, Barbara, for being the first recipient of “The Barbara Sterensis Distinguished Achievement Award” and the great honor of having the award given in your name annually!

You are an amazing force for positive change in our community and it is a joy to see you recognized in this way for all of your incredible achievements during your many years with Gulf Coast. We love you and couldn’t be more proud of you and all you do! Joe, Abby, & Lauren

The Inaugural Barbara G. Sterensis Distinguished Achievement Award Selfless commitment is the essence of Barbara Sterensis’ nearly two decade dedication to Gulf Coast JFCS. Barbara joined the Board in 2004 and for the next 15 years she served at a level and capacity of dedication unparalleled in the organization’s history. Through her tenure on the Board, she dedicated herself to learning all aspects of the organization. Following the tragic deaths of two CEOs within a five year period, Barbara stepped in further to help an organization steeped in grief, including briefly serving as acting CEO. Not only did she willingly put aside her own personal life and priorities to suddenly step into this role, she did so in a way to help the Gulf Coast JFCS staff begin to heal from the shock of its loss while affording the leadership time to begin the search for a new chief executive. The value of her tireless and compassionate embrace of the Gulf Coast JFCS family at this time was beyond measure! Having such deep and broad knowledge of Gulf Coast JFCS programs, Barbara teamed up with her good friend and amateur photographer, Sonia Raymund, to create the first FACES book-First Edition, showcasing the beautiful people and stories of the Gulf Coast JFCS family. The Second Edition of FACES is recently completed and being offered as a thank you to Tree of Life Circle contributors as a reminder of the life changing impact of these generous gifts. Barbara Sterensis is a treasure to Gulf Coast JFCS, to our community and to the world! The Gulf Coast JFCS Board of Directors is proud to honor her with the inaugural Barbara G. Sterensis Distinguished Achievement Award, and will look in future years to award this honor to others who follow in her footsteps with such dedicated and selfless leadership.
