New Jersey Real Heroes: Meeting the Moment

SPECIAL RECOGNITION We wish to recognize important chapter awards that cannot be celebrated this year. We applaud our past recipient and look forward to honoring future awardees.

QUINN AWARD The Quinn Family legacy has deep roots our Northern New Jersey chapter area of Sussex County, which began with the founding of a county American Red Cross chapter by Mrs. Joseph P. Quinn, Sr. in 1917. For the last 20 years, individuals, businesses and organizations who have voluntarily contributed service, time, and personal resources to assist the Red Cross in the accomplishment of its humanitarian mission have been honored with the Quinn Award, a symbol of hope inspired by the honorees’ efforts.

THE BOB CLANCY CULTURE OF CARING AWARD Bob Clancy was a former board member and true friend of the American Red Cross Central New Jersey Chapter. Bob was an effective fundraiser and a great communicator of our vision, getting both individuals and corporations actively involved. Sadly, in December 2003, Bob lost his battle to cancer. Bob's conviction that by being involved in the mission of the Red Cross, a culture of caring would follow and help to reduce or prevent violence in society. Bob left us this inspiring legacy to which we may all aspire. As an organization we owe much to the labors and efforts from hundreds of volunteers. The past recipients of this award displayed community spirit, unwavering commitment, and ability to inspire others in the Red Cross mission that exemplified the meaning of this award.

THE WILLIAM W. AUGUSTINE AWARD William Augustine was a dear friend of the American Red Cross. The positive effects of Bill’s efforts and generosity are possibly too voluminous to capture in words, but are still felt on a daily basis within our community. His actions breathed life into the mission of our organization and have given us a leading example of our vision to bring hope, compassion and care to those we serve. Bill was honored for his exemplary service back in 2008 as recipient of the Culture of Caring award. In 2014, the American Red Cross began recognizing individuals and organizations that shared Bill's enthusiasm with an award in his honor.

CHRIS MOSES First Responder Hero Chris Moses, a volunteer firefighter from Waldwick, NJ, was enjoying a vacation day at the Jersey shore with Kerri Comer. When Chris and Kerri were in line to visit the Cape May Lighthouse, they heard shouts for help at the top - and they sprang into action, running up more than 200 stairs.

At the top of the lighthouse, Chris administered CPR to a man who had collapsed. The Cape May Fire Department arrived on the scene and Chris played a critical role in using an AED. Kerri kept the family calm and worked to move other visitors out of the way. Once a pulse was detected, Chris and other responders carried the man down the spiral tower stairs to a waiting ambulance.

LINDSEY MCDERMOTT Youth Good Samaritan Hero Junior Miss Stafford, Lindsey McDermott, is not your average 11-year-old. Lindsey initiated conversations with her local Police Department to find creative ways to support her community during the COVID pandemic.

She made and sold signs by going door-to-door in her town, and on social media, to raise more than $5,800 to support the annual Township Coat and Toy Drive. During a season that was challenging for many, Lindsey’s efforts made sure local families in need had a great holiday.

AMY BRESLOW Humanitarian Hero While her husband, Brett, battled COVID in the Intensive Care Unit at Cooper University Hospital, Amy turned to the media to share Brett’s story and save the lives of others.

She advocated to advance the investigation of new COVID therapies like Convalescent Plasma and encouraged families to take the virus seriously.

She and her family started a fund to furnish every ICU bed with an iPad to aide communication between patients and families, and between families and health care teams. The Cooper Foundation has coordinated with this fund to ensure its success.

RAVITZ FAMILY MARKETS Community Partner Hero Since 1968, the Ravitz Family has been a staple of their South Jersey Community. But this past year, the familyowned grocery store chain found themselves thrust onto center stage during the COVID pandemic.

The employees of Ravitz Family Markets are credited with their creative social media communication and exhaustive efforts to keep store shelves stocked and customers and employees safe in such a critical time.

Sadly, Steve Ravitz passed away from COVID-19 in April 2020. The family recognizes their employees and community for rallying around them during such a difficult time.

– SMSgt Thomas Carpino Sergeant Menard was the Restriction of Movement architect behind mitigation procedures for the entire Expeditionary Center enterprise, a plan that has been adopted by other Major-Commands in the US Air Force. He champions special needs families through the Air Force Exceptional Family Military Program, coordinated teams to paint and update the Fort Dix American Red Cross facility, facilitated counseling and vital care for Airmen facing mental health crises, and has led opportunities to develop the Diversity and Inclusion efforts of the organization.

JACKIE LUE RAIA and BLUE KNIGHTS NJ VIII Gift of Life Heroes Blue Knights is an international law enforcement motorcycle club that provides support, friendship and camaraderie to the community. Their "Celebrate Life" ride every September formed to raise awareness of organ and tissue donation.

In 2019, with thanks to Jackie Lue Raia’s enthusiasm, a successful Red Cross Blood Drive was seamlessly incorporated into the ride.

This annual event has truly become a "Celebration of Life."

Imagine, motorcyclist, covered in riding gear, completing an hour-long ride, then rolling up their sleeves to give the gift of life through blood donation. It is nothing short of remarkable.
