Fun-filled WEEKEND
Chatsworth Country Fair returns with an action-packed lineup and exciting guest stars
CHATSWORTH

Chatsworth Country Fair returns Friday 29 - Sunday 31 August, with a thrilling programme of performances and activities attracting tens of thousands of visitors from around the country. One of England’s most spectacular annual outdoor events, it won the gold award in the brand new ‘Festival or Event of the Year’ category at the 2025 Peak District, Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Awards.
Chatsworth Country Fair is held in the 1000-acre parkland surrounding Chatsworth House and offers everything from family entertainment and inspirational cookery masterclasses to delicious local produce and have-a-go country pursuit activities.
This year’s event promises another three action-packed days of entertainment in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside. The Country Fair President for 2025’s event is Harriet Cowan, who recently starred in the hugely popular Clarkson’s Farm series. Derbyshire-born Harriet has quickly become one of the most exciting new voices in British farming. Through her candid insights into rural life and the challenges of modern farming, Harriet has emerged as a powerful advocate for young farmers.
This year will see more than 75 hot air balloons take to the skies as part of the popular hot air balloon display. Eyecatching balloon designs include everything from screwdrivers and cows to aliens and birds. The 2025 Country Fair will welcome favourites to the Grand Ring, with freestyle
motocross stunt teams, medieval jousting displays, falconry demonstrations and a Lancaster Bomber flypast being just some of the entertainment on offer throughout the weekend.
For visiting foodies, renowned chef Nisha Katona, founder and CEO of Mowgli Street Food, will be joining James Martin and Phil Vickery in this year’s cookery demonstration theatre, alongside some of Derbyshire and the Peak District’s most acclaimed chefs as they showcase dishes that champion locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. The Fine Food Village will also offer the perfect chance to sample and buy high-quality local produce.
Highlights for families include the vintage funfair, a climbing wall, and bungee trampoline, as well as the opportunity to try pony riding, archery, flyfishing and more under expert guidance. Visiting dogs can also have-a-go at dog agility and join in the Family Fun Dog Show.
For those wanting a break from the action, the shopping village hosts over 250 different stalls, with the
CHATSWORTH

chance to browse homeware, clothing, accessories and gifts from talented local makers as well as Peak District based businesses, and Chatsworth’s Farm Shop and gift shops.
Event organiser, Sarah Green, commented: “The Country Fair has become a highlight in the calendar for people across the UK, and we’re thrilled to welcome visitors back for another unforgettable year.
“While favourites like the stunt performances, flypasts and hands-on activities remain as popular as ever, we’re always looking to create new, lasting memories, and this year’s jousting displays and record number of hot air balloons promise to do just that. We’re especially excited to welcome Harriet Cowan as our Country Fair President, and renowned chef Nisha Katona, both making their debut appearances at the event.”
Grand Ring Entertainment:
Every day from 10:45am to 6:30pm, watch dynamic displays on land and in the air in the Grand Ring, plus an opening ceremony at noon. The Grand Ring Entertainment will kick off with its incredible opening ceremony at 11:45am, featuring a display by the Parachute Team (Royal British legion), followed by the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service Band, freestyle motocross stunt team Boldgod FMX, a medieval jousting display, vintage car parade and more, all concluded by the closing ceremony and hot air balloon ascent.
Hot Air Balloon Ascent:
Weather permitting, the summer celebration will welcome over 75 pilots and their hot air balloons to the country fair, to take to the skies as part of the popular hot air balloon display.
Wind conditions on the day determine the timing and location of their take-off, flight path and landing but look to the skies above Chatsworth to see a multitude of different balloon designs - from fire hydrants and screwdrivers to traditional globe shapes. Eyecatching balloon designs include everything from screwdrivers and cows to aliens and birds.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, following the closing ceremony, there will be an inflation demonstration and take off in the Grand Ring. The balloons commence their inflation from 6am. Country Fair ticket holders who want to watch the balloons take off may park in the west car park from 6am.
CHATSWORTH

Fine Food Village:
Explore the fine food village and experience cookery master classes from TV and local chefs alike, with a chance to shop and sample highquality food and drink from British producers.
The cookery demonstration theatre will feature James Martin (Friday), British chef and television presenter, best known for the cookery series Saturday Kitchen and Nisha Katona (Saturday), British restauranteur, TV personality, and founder of Mowgli Street Food restaurants. Sunday will see Phil Vickery, celebrity chef best known for his appearances on ITV’s This Morning, and expertise in gluten-free cooking.
Each session will be followed by a book signing in the book signing tent. Also taking to the stage will be celebrated chefs from across Derbyshire and the Peak District, demonstrating dishes that showcase locally sourced seasonal produce, including Mark Aisthorpe from The Bulls Head, Holymoorside, John Shuttleworth, Head Chef from Fischers Baslow Hall, Eva Humphries from Wholefood Warriors, and Chris Mapp from The Tickled Trout, Barlow. The Fine Food Village will also include The Chilli Jam Man, Flapjackery, The Bakewell Tart Shop, Cambridge Artisan Cheese and many more, all available for visitors to sample and purchase.

Tickets:
Adult tickets are priced at £32.50 if booked online before 28 August, or £35 on the gate. Carers and children aged 15 years and under are admitted for free, when accompanied by a paying adult.
Membership:
As part of Chatsworth’s commitment to making the estate more accessible, the price of family memberships was reduced at the start of the year. Chatsworth Friends memberships not only offer great value for families all year round but also include a range of other benefits such as complimentary tickets to the Chatsworth Country Fair.

Let’s CELEBRATE
Two iconic Peak District venues, perfect for memorable gatherings.
From milestone birthdays and longoverdue reunions to team away days that feel more like a treat than a task, there’s something undeniably bring people together.
Nestled in the heart of the Peak District, The Maynard in Grindleford and The George Hathersage are two historic venues that offer much more than beautiful bedrooms and brilliant food. They’re places that bring people together - whether it’s friends raising a toast, colleagues catching up over coffee, or families gathering to celebrate life’s biggest moments.
These two venues, each part of local independent hospitality group Longbow Venues, combine relaxed elegance with Peak District charm, creating the kind of spaces that make guests feel instantly at ease. What’s more, with warm service, exceptional food and drink, and some of the most spectacular views in the region, they make it very easy to turn a simple gettogether into something really quite special.
The Maynard: Elevated yet effortless
Perched above the Hope Valley with jawdropping views across the countryside, The

weddings and special occasions. However, its appeal extends far beyond the aisle.
With a new summer menu created by Raymond Blanc-trained Executive Chef Adrian Gagea, The Maynard is a
venison ravioli with creamy chorizo and sage, or a trio of miniature Peak District pies - all designed to surprise and delight. There’s also a Sunday roast that draws diners from miles around, using meats from Over Haddon’s New Close Farm and all the classic trimmings.

The spacious garden terrace - complete with panoramic views and live music on Sundays - makes this a go-to for birthdays, afternoon teas, relaxed networking events or post-hike drinks with friends. The venue also offers private dining options, gorgeous bedrooms for overnight stays, and exclusive-use event spaces, allowing guests to shape a celebration that feels truly personal.
The George Hathersage: Reimagined and ready to welcome

heritage features and a warm, contemporary style. Outside, a large courtyard and al fresco dining space make it ideal for summer celebrations, team lunches, and family feasts.
The food here is a real highlight. The newly launched summer menu, created under the guidance of Adrian and delivered by Head Chef James Heywood, is fresh, include:
• Harissa-marinated chicken thighs with mango salsa and lemon crème fraîche
• Chilli butter smashed chickpeas with
• Freshly baked pizzas, hand-rolled to order
• White chocolate and passionfruit cheesecake with strawberry coulis
There’s something for everyone, with over 90 per cent of the menu adaptable for gluten-free diets and plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and dairy-free options available too.
The George’s private dining and event space, known as The Dragon’s Den, is a favourite for small group celebrations, while the relaxed bar area, cosy lounge area and sun-dappled courtyard make spontaneous summer get-togethers a joy.
Whether you’re stopping in after a hike, catching up with friends, or planning something more special, The George fashioned hospitality in equal measure.

Events with Personality
What sets both The Maynard and The

George apart is their ability to host events that feel as relaxed and joyful as they are beautifully executed. Whether you’re planning an intimate dinner, a retirement do, a creative work session, or just want a space where your group can laugh, linger and be well looked after - these are places that rise to the occasion.
Both venues have hosted everything from baby showers to business breakfasts, support, and that rare combination of

professionalism and personality. And while they each offer different atmospheres - The Maynard with its countryside grandeur, The George with its village buzz - they share a core ethos:

A Sweet RELEASE

s I took my window seat on a sun-drenched summer’s evening in Nonnas, my attention was temporarily drawn from the comings and goings inside the restaurant and the everchanging street scene on Ecclesall Road head.
It was for La Dolce Vita, which we all now know translates as The Sweet Life. Even if you’ve never seen this 1960

Has come to Yorkshire!
Mitchell’s Wines in Sheffield who are already a Habanos specialist have now joined the elite La Casa del Habanos network.
Tucked away on the south side of Sheffield, Mitchell’s Wine Merchants at 354 Meadowhead is far more than your average off-licence. Established in 1935 by Dennis Mitchell as a butchers shop. Mitchells as a family-run business has grown from its humble beginnings, John Mitchell son of Dennis elevated the business in the 1960’s into one of the region’s most respected destinations for wines, whiskies, spirits, craft beers, and cigars.
Now in the hands of the third generation of the Mitchell family, Frankie Mitchell and her husband James. Mitchell’s is a true gem for anyone passionate about quality drinks and fine cigars. It might look unassuming on a row of shops but step inside and find yourself in an Aladdin’s cave of curated delights.
La Casa del Habano Sheffield has been the vision of Frankie, James and John for quite some time. Located next door to Mitchell’s at 352 Meadowhead. At the core of the venue is a meticulously crafted walk-in humidor, a climatecontrolled haven housing one of the most comprehensive selections of Habanos cigars in
the north of England. The selection houses the full Habano portfolio, exclusive LCDH lines and even discontinued cigars. Arranged in strength and brand order helping any newcomer find their way around the vast selection. The humidor is a sensory experience, filled with rich aromas of aged tobacco and stunning cedar inviting customers to browse and discover.
Private hire cedar lockers located in the temperature and humidity-controlled humidor are available for customers to store their favourites, rare limited editions or simply prefer the convenience of having their cigars ready for when they arrive.
Just beyond the humidor lies the sampling lounge, where cigar enjoyment transforms into ritual. Designed with comfort and sophistication in mind. The lounge blends refined Cuban character with rich leather armchairs, stylish fabric lounge seating and a hand painted Cuban street scene of the classic 1950’s car cruising through Old Havana by local artist Alex Thompson. This scene brings a sense of place and nostalgia, offering a visual connection to the

island that defines the cigars themselves. Soft lighting, curated music and a premium air filtration system ensures a pleasant and relaxed environment. While James and the team are always nearby to offer pairing suggestions, light your cigar to perfection of even just share their knowledge.
The LCDH store represents a significant investment, not just financially, but in our vision for the future of cigars in Sheffield. While it brings prestige and global recognition it also ensures Mitchells continues to grow from strength to strength. LCDH provides a platform but it’s the passion, experience and loyal support behind Mitchells that will carry it forward.

If visiting with children, Baslow Woodland Park is a must to keep the children occupied. The woodland-themed playground, complete with a zip line and wooden climbing frames, is perfect for keeping little ones entertained and active. After exploring, enjoy a peaceful riverside walk or relax at a welcoming local pub.
Ashford-in-the-Water
Another 15-20-minute car journey takes you to the idyllic village of Ashford-in-the-Water for a riverside escape. Here you can visit the Sheepwash Bridge- a historical three-arched stone bridge with roots in Ashford’s agricultural past. Stroll along the banks of the River Wye, where you can feed the ducks, enjoy the views or even settle for a picnic if the weathers up for it. Known as the ‘Plague Village’, Eyam made history in the 1660s by isolating itself to stop the spread of the plague. Because of this, Eyam’s history is quite the story. Today, visitors can walk among the preserved plague cottages, each with plaques telling the story of who lived there. Be sure to visit Eyam Museum for a deeper insight into this remarkable chapter of British history. With its charming tea rooms and scenic surroundings, Eyam makes for a memorable afternoon stop.

With its peaceful atmosphere and picture worthy setting, Edensor is a perfect spot to capture the beauty of Chatsworth Estate.

Heading to UNIVERSITY?
The time has come. The months of what you thought was a long summer have quickly passed.
of university, living away from home, to undertake the experience which everyone has been relentlessly talking about. You haven’t been able to go anywhere without those daunting questions of ‘what do you want to do?’ constantly haunting you at school, family gatherings, online, with friends, open days, the list doesn’t end. You almost can’t believe it, you have no
in a very long time, you’re asking yourself ‘but how do I make friends again?’, feeling quite daft.
something. In the months before starting university, I had some general ideas of what I wanted it to look like: a case of ‘making
the most of the opportunities thrown my way’ and ‘fake it till I make it’ putting myself out there. To be honest, this wasn’t a bad thought process. So, what things should you do to make the most of university life?
THINGS TO DO
Get involved:
There are so many things to get involved in at uni, from societies to fairs to socials to course events, there is always something happening. Then, you can meet people, have something to look forward to in the week, and it can help you set up a routine. This especially goes for courses with a minimal amount of contact hours, like arts and humanities, as it’s easy to go days without seeing anyone. Feelings of loneliness are common, even though it seems ridiculous as you’re surrounded
by thousands of other students, so getting involved in everything which uni life has to offer.
Make sure you make the most of your course and prioritise it: Afterall, you did come to uni to study the course you applied to do, so making the most of lectures and seminars is important. Going to as many seminars and lectures as you can helps you settle in more quickly, giving you people you can count on when times get rough. It’s your course mates who you will see most often; a big chunk of your time at uni will be spent studying your course.
Ask the person you spoke to in a seminar if they want to go get coffee. Apparently, this is weird, but I did it all the time, it’s how I met a lot of the people I’m closest to today. So, whether it’s weird or not, it works!
Remember that falling into a nice routine at uni where you feel comfortable takes a long time, it is not unusual to feel like things are only just falling into place towards the end of your second semester as a fresher.
Remember there is support available for anything you might struggle with:
When I pictured what uni would be like, it was a place which throws you in the deep on your own, and you are suddenly alone. The reality is quite the opposite.
Universities are set up with advice centres, the Students’ Union, disability and other support services; there is always someone who can help. Most have a general hub where you can ask anything and they will signpost you to the right place.
The basis is, if you need help, just ask.
Seek out places which make you feel at home:
Figuring things out in a completely new place is daunting, suddenly being reliant on Google Maps just to get to the local Tesco.
never even thought about before: knowing the layout of stores and exactly where to
EDUCATION
It is very normal to feel alone or lost, which is why it is important to seek out your favourite areas nearby. Having a favourite library, café, park, or maybe there’s a line of charity shops you like. Having places to go when you need a pickyear.
THINGS NOT TO DO
Don’t compare your uni experience to everyone else’s, especially online: It’s easy to compare yourself to everyone around you. From their posts, your home friends seem to be having a much better harder than everyone else?
One of the biggest tips I could give would be to avoid this. It’s important to realise there is no ‘normal’ or ‘right’ way to experience uni. Don’t think you’re doing it wrong because you miss home or you’re would.
Don’t neglect your health, including mental health: Forgetting about your health is easy to do while you’re getting used to balancing everything. Making sure you go to the GP, and use support services when you
need them is key to surviving the fresher lifestyle. Simply taking vitamin C tablets, and drinking loads of water can help ward
Rotating between several meals helps when you don’t know what to cook, or need to plan, really helps. I recommend getting lots of frozen fruit and veg if you have the freezer space, because, let’s be realistic, food packaging in supermarkets is not made for one. Frozen mixed veg, onion slices, mixed berries, chips and easy oven food are great options which can be added to most meals, saving you when you realise you have nothing in the fridge. Frozen food means not worrying about things going off, which is vital as a student because it saves money and reduces food waste.
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself:
pressure you put on yourself to a minimum. Balancing everything is hard, including keeping in contact with home friends. There are limits to how much you can do, so don’t expect to be able to do everything. Relax, take breaks, and only do things because you want to do them. Whether you like going out, prefer sober nights in, your valid, so do whatever you enjoy.

Keeping it in the FAMILY
Richard Abbey meets Moonlight Textiles’ Paul Smith to talk about building on his father’s legacy, his son joining the business and, of course, that all-important 40th anniversary.
fter 40 years in business, it’s fair to say that managing director, Paul Smith, has his fair share of stories to tell. None stick in the mind more so than the time of the World Student Games in 1991 when his company, Moonlight
accommodation with curtains and blinds.
Given that over 3,000 competitors would be descending on the city, this was a tall order for anyone and Paul and his team enrolled the help of a local Scout group to deadline.
Everything was going swimmingly until a contractor inadvertently left his toolbag somewhere he shouldn’t have, causing a security scare.
“They had to draft the bomb squad in from Doncaster!” laughs Paul, who can now see the funny side. “They sent in a little robot and could see it was full of screws, springs and nuts and bolts. Not wanting to

take any chances, they had to blow it up with a controlled explosion.”
At that time, Paul was still working under the stewardship of his father, Robert, who had started the business in 1985 alongside his mother, Jo.
Today, Moonlight specialises in the measurement, manufacture, supply and installation of bespoke, made-to-measure blinds, curtains, tracks and poles for both the domestic and commercial markets.
The business quickly grew, opening its

own showroom just off Ecclesall Road opposite what was once Napoleon’s Casino, before relocating to its current premises on Abbeydale Road in 1992. This far larger showroom, which had its own workshop and workroom, allowed Moonlight Textiles to do everything in-house, from initial enquiry through to installation. It’s something they still pride themselves on to this day.

ourmaline offers a beautiful rainbow of colours, with no other gemstone having quite the same range of hues, or even stones that have more than colour!
TThe gem was recognised as a distinct mineral species in the 1800s, often being confused with other gems previously. The name tourmaline originated in Sri Lanka, deriving from the Sinhalese meaning ‘mixed gems’ and referring to the multicoloured assortment of crystals found in the gem gravels of that country.
as pink or green tourmaline, some varieties also have their own names, such as rubellite for red or indicolite for blue.
A rare variety with a vivid blue to
discovered in the state of that name in Brazil although the name is often now applied to similar gems from Mozambique and Nigeria. The presence of traces of copper gives a stunning ‘pop’ to their colour.
It is not uncommon for a single tourmaline crystal to display more than one colour due to alterations in the chemical environment during growth. The crystals form as long prisms with a rounded triangular cross-section and those displaying more than
one hue may vary along the length (so one end of the crystal is one colour and the other end a different colour) or have concentric zones of different colours when viewed in cross-section. Because of the range seen in tourmaline it is possible to see a variety of combinations, but the most common is green and pink. A variety called watermelon tourmaline is often cut into slices to display a bright pink centre framed by an outer zone of green.

Tourmaline also exhibits strong pleochroism, a property that is connected to the way light interacts with a gemstone and means that it can appear different colours when viewed from different directions, in tourmaline’s case often darker and lighter shades of the same colour; darker when viewed along the crystal and lighter when viewed from the side.
It is quite common to encounter carved tourmalines in both jewellery and decorative objects, since it can form in large sizes and such a range of colours. The gem is rather prone to inclusions, and using it in this way, or for beads, cabochons, and rose cut gems, really shows off the beautiful colour in material that would not be especially attractive as a faceted gem. The inclusions can then add texture to the gem’s appearance and give each stone a unique look.

If you would like to learn more about tourmaline or view our tourmaline jewellery please visit our showroom or you can also view some of our tourmaline jewellery on our website.

High-value estates typically encompass private and business assets and liabilities, as well as various trusts. Accurate valuation of these components is needed to ensure compliance with tax obligations and distribution of the estate’s assets. A comprehensive understanding of documentation, the language employed by other professionals, and the prevailing tax practices is essential.
Some high-net-worth clients have used tax planning techniques, such as the utilisation of trusts, lifetime gifts, and other methods, to mitigate their tax burden. This approach can result in highly complex estates that necessitate specialised knowledge and skill.
Administration of estates involving businesses presents additional challenges.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed proved to be a catalyst for the unveiling of lots of new models, including a new Ferrari, writes Richard Abbey.

a European energy mix, the ES90’s footprint is approximately 50 per cent lower than the Volvo S90 mild hybrid variant, and 30 per cent lower than a plug-in hybrid S90. It is also lower than the EX40 and EC40.
This means the ES90 has one of the lowest carbon footprints of any Volvo car to date. It also demonstrates that fully electric cars are a good choice both for customers and for the climate.

WA night on theTOON
The Dakota Deluxe has brought a touch of luxury to Newcastle’s Quayside, writes Richard Abbey.
hen I’d mentioned to friends and family that I was heading up to Newcastle for the weekend, the
I like to think I’m past all those types puzzled looks.
But while this North East gem might often be described as the ultimate party city, there’s much more to Newcastle than drinking, dancing and doner kebabs in the Bigg Market.
The city has culture in abundance; from the castle and cathedral to a wealth of galleries and museums. Shopping offers a good mix of independent boutiques and high street names, and of course there’s the Metro Centre not too far away. Newcastle’s Metro network also means it’s really easy to reach all parts of the city and surrounding areas, including coastal spots such as Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. The former is well worth a visit and has its own castle and priory to explore as well as gorgeous sandy beaches and a buntingstrewn high street.
We arrived in Newcastle on a sunny
afternoon, passing the Angel of the North after leaving the A1 and travelling across the Tyne Bridge to reach our destination for the

It’s a curious building, U-shaped with a huge forecourt out front which gives it a sense of grandeur. Chatting to the very helpful reception team, I was told it used to the deluxe treatment.
You’d never know.
The quiet interior, all dark and mysterious, feels luxurious from the moment you step through the door. This was echoed in our room, a Classic King which had a stunning archway window with views over the River Tyne and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
It was a good size, with a huge king-size bed dominating the space as well as two armchairs and table, which sat under the archway. The bathroom had both a bath and walk-in shower as well as toiletries from Molton Brown. Tea and coffee facilities also included an espresso machine, as well as fresh milk and drinks in the fridge. The had all the familiar streaming services as as standard.
Not that we were planning on spending too much time in the room given there was a city to explore and we’d picked

Thirst quenched, we headed back to the hotel to change for dinner after making a reservation in its restaurant, The Grill.
As the name suggests, the restaurant specialises in prime-cut steaks, all of which are grass-fed, 35-day aged and cooked over to 280g A5 Wagyu rib-eye steaks and you
Sides and sauces have to added for an extra charge.
We started with some tempura padron peppers (£8) before tucking into a king scallop (£18), which was presented beautifully with pork cheek and apple, and chicken ravioli (£13) which came with a carbonara-esque sauce of pancetta, parmesan and egg yolk.
For the main event I tucked into a perfectly-cooked medium-rare 340g New York Strip steak (£75) whilst my wife opted for the 350g Secreto Ibérico pork steak

(£36). We added sides of chunky chips and a rocket and parmesan salad (both £6) as well as some tenderstem broccoli (£7.50), which was served with sesame and soy.
The quality of everything we ate was superb, the steak melt-in-the-mouth and we really loved the dining space, which featured a mix of booths, banquettes and regular tables, all very intimate and indulgent.
We passed up the offer of dessert and

Breakfast the following morning continued the high standards and capped off a superb stay at a truly beautiful and convenient hotel.
