Rainbow Serpent Festival — Lexton, Australia The sleepy town of Lexton in Victoria, is a place most travellers, and even local Australians, overlook. Situated north of the more cosmopolitan state capital, Melbourne, Lexton, which at its last census in 2006 only contained a population of 149, transforms into one of the biggest music, arts and lifestyle festival every summer.

Originally just for music, the four-day Rainbow Serpent Festival has since grown to include art and lifestyle. Considered the ‘Burning Man’ of the southern hemisphere, the 18th run of the Rainbow Serpent Festival will include more than 140 acts spread across five stages, including Be Svendsen from Germany, Interpulse from Australia, and John Digweed.

Interspersed around the festival’s grounds are also art installations from around the globe; the spiritually themed Michael Divine’s Ten Thousand Visions will strike awe and leave visitors in a contemplative mood.

Chingay Parade — Singapore While Lunar New Year is mainly celebrated by the Chinese in Singapore, it has not stopped the other ethnic groups from coming together to join in the festivities during the nation’s and Asia’s largest street performance and float parade.

Chingay, which means “the art of costume and masquerade” in Hokkien, is an extravaganza that epitomises the dynamism of Singapore’s multicultural society.

The parade was first introduced in 1973 by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew as a compensation for the ban of firecrackers. The first parade showed various aspects of Chinese culture, such as with martial arts, dragon and lion dances and Chinese opera but this has since grown to include performances by the Malays, Indians, and Eurasians, and even sees participants from all over the world.

As 2016 marks the first year of Singapore’s next 50 years of independence, Chingay 2016 will be themed “Lights of Legacy, Brighter Singapore” and will have an exhilarating display of illuminated floats, aerial acts, and even a spectacular fireworks display for its grand finale.

The main parade will take place at the F1 Pit Building that is situated next to the Singapore Flyer. The large, observation Ferris wheel is Singapore’s answer to the London

Eye and provides alluring vistas of the metropolis’ skyline. For a private viewing experience of the Chingay parade, couples can choose to book a four-course dinner menu with butler with the Flyer’s Premium Sky Dining service (from US$225 per couple; singaporeflyer.com).

An Appetite for Hungary’s Budapest Although small, Hungary is one of the oldest European countries with a distinct culture and history and there’s no better place to soak it all in than at Budapest.

The rich journey of heritage begins in the heart of the capital and largest city of the landlocked country.

Start with a visit to the city’s most famous building, St Stephen’s Basilica, the largest church in the city.

Technically a cathedral by architectural standards, the building was bestowed the title of ‘basilica minor’ by Pope Pius XI in 1931. It took 50 years of construction and features two different styles, neo-classical and neo-Renaissance. From the basilica, make your way to Vörösmarty Square, named after Hungarian poet Mihály Vörösmarty, whose statue stands in the middle of the square. Definitely check out the Gerbeaud Cafe that has been a tenant in the square since 1870.

After a cup of coffee at Vörösmarty Square, move on to Vákert Bazár (Royal Garden Pavilion). The newly restored Vákert Bazár was built on the banks of the Danube, at the foot of the Castle Hill. The building complex, once considered an endangered monument, features an open arcade with pavilions, stairways, ramps and blocks of flats. Take a walk around the Castle District, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that contains the country’s most important medieval monuments and museums. Stop by the Royal Palace (Buda Castle), where admission is free, to visit the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest History Museum and National Library.

Other attractions within the Buda Castle are the Fisherman’s Bastion (Halászbástya) and Matthias Church (Mátyás Templom). Built in the 19th Century, the Fisherman’s Bastion serves as a lookout tower for bird’s eye panoramic views of Budapest. As for the Matthias Church, the Roman Catholic place of worship is steeped in history that dates back to Szent István (Saint Stephen), the first King of Hungary in 1015.

Discover more religious significance of Hungarian history with a brief walk around the Jewish Quarter, which is located in the city centre.

Explore the largest synagogue in Europe at The Great Synagogue in Dohány Street that is still in use by the Jewish community. Pay respects at the Holocaust Memorial as well that has noted down the names of Hungarian Jews killed during the Holocaust. Other great places to visit in this area are the Gozsdu Courtyard, and Orthodox Synagogue on Kazinczy utica, which was built in Hungarian Art Nouveau style. Within walking distance is the Klauzál tar, the district’s largest square and home to the Klauzál Square Market Hall, one of the five large market halls in the city.

Another square to visit is the Heroes’ Square (H sök tere), the largest in Budapest, which connects to Andárassy Avenue. The picturesque avenue is a beautiful place to walk down for its turn-of-the-century buildings, many of which are now boutiques for upscale international brands. Its most famous tenant, however, is the State Opera House that still continues to perform world-class operas each evening. At Heroes’ Square itself, the impressive space is surrounded by the Museum of Fine arts and Kunsthalle (Hall of Art). It is worth visiting this place twice — once in the day and once at night for a beautiful juxtaposition of sights.

Some 40% of Tasmania is protected as national parks and while most trees in the rainforest are evergreen, there are those that shed their leaves in autumn (March to May) to create the most amazing kaleidoscope of colours.

Kaleidoscope of Colour There are many great reasons to travel to Australia’s island state however autumn is a special time for those who love nature and photographing it. It’s called the ‘turning of the Fagus’ or when the leaves of the native Nothofagus trees change from green to yellow to orange and red. Other introduced trees join in the display to add additional hues to the palette of forest colours.

Two of the best national parks to witness this all-natural display are Cradle Mountain and Mount Field, with one in Tasmania’s north and the other in the south. it’s recommended flying into Launceston and out of Hobart or vice versa. Fly-drive is the best way to discover Tasmania and, with ideal and relaxed driving conditions plus lots to see and sample on the road, Australia’s island state is a paradise just waiting to be discovered.

Hobart and Mount Field With just 200,000 residents (Tasmania’s population is only 500,000), Hobart is small enough to be personal but big enough to offer a sophisticated lifestyle. With ideal weather, the downtown docks and Battery Point beside the Derwent River is best explored on foot with Saturday’s Salamanca Market being the perfect time to enjoy some of the state’s delicious produce especially fruit.

Pick up a rental car and head northwest from Hobart on well-signposted roads for Mount Field but you’ll soon be distracted by things to see and do.

At Bridgewater, just out of suburban Hobart, decisions will have to be made – Tasmanian Devils at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary or delicious cool temperate wines at Stefano Lubiana Wines? It’s best to choose both options as the devils and other wildlife offer a great introduction to Australia’s unusual fauna. On the other hand, the biodynamic, boutique and hand-crafted wines like Riesling and Pinot Noir produced by Stefano Lubiana are rated among Australia’s finest. Plan to be here at lunchtime to enjoy some rustic Italian fare featuring locally-grown biodynamic produce. A designated non-drinking driver needs to be assigned when visiting vineyards.

All this is great preparation for the amazing colours waiting at Mount Field National Park. While there are longer walks for the adventurous (winter snow on the top of Mount Dobson), most will be content to stay on the signposted walks along the forest-lined stream leading to the famous Russell Falls. The vegetation and colours are amazing and it’s not only the Fagus, the tree ferns are the world’s tallest.

Retrace your tracks from the park and make a decision to head through the Central Highlands or the West Coast for Cradle Mountain National Park. This means stopping at Curringa Farm for the first route or Pumphouse Point in Lake St. Clair National Park for the West Coast route. You know you’re in good hands at either overnight stop as both just received national accolades at the Tourism Australia Awards.

Make time to explore each place with Curringa Farm offering sheep shearing, rounding up and forest walks while at Pumphouse Point, forest walks, mountain biking, lake cruises, and the Wall in the Wilderness are essential activities.

Chubu Region consists of nine prefectures and is located in the center of Japan’s largest island, Honshu. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a seasonal attraction, is best known as

“the Roof of Japan” as it passes through the dynamic scenery of Mt. Tateyama within the Japan Alps. Traverse over 90km with a variety of vehicles (cable-cars, trolley buses and ropeway) as the elevation changes over 2,400m from Toyama Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture.

The main attraction though, will have to be the majestic snow corridor as it forms walls as tall as 20m high.

The Jigokudani Monkey Park offers visitors a unique experience of seeing wild monkeys bathing in a natural hot spring, a highly popular activity for Japanese themselves. This park is home to Japanese Macaques, more commonly known as Snow Monkeys. The attraction is formed based on the monkey’s natural habitat, in the forests of the Jigokudani valley in Yamanouchi.

Recognised as one of the top three dinosaur museums in the world, Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Musuem will definitely thrill the Jurassic enthusiasts.

Dinosaur World, the museum’s principal exhibition, holds more than 40 dinosaur skeletons accompanied with English explanations. At the entrance of the exhibition, do not be alarm to come into an incredibly life like Tyrannosaurs Rex, made from animatronics.

Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, the Shirakawago and neighbouring Gokayama regions line the Shogawa River Valley in the remote mountainous area that spans from Gifu to Toyama Prefectures. These attractions are famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses that hold a rich history, some dating back to 250 years ago.
