GEA is supplying Brazil with two powerful Rekugavo plate heat exchangers for flue gas purification
Imbera
GEA is supplying two fully welded Rekugavo plate heat exchangers for the first combined flue gas desulphurization and denitrification plant in the Brazilian oil and gas industry. The 2200 t blocks are the core elements of the investment in the “Abreu e Lima” refinery complex operated by Brazil’s state-owned crude oil company Petrobras. The high-efficiency Rekugavo was specially developed to bring the flue gases to the catalyst reaction temperature to filter off sulphur and nitrogen components from the process waste gases, thus making an active contribution to environmental protection. During the scrubbing process the gas passes twice in counterflow through the Rekugavo plate heat exchangers that have a heating surface of 40,000 m², which is equivalent to five and a half soccer pitches – once as raw gas and once as scrubbed gas. In both cases there is a transfer of heat between the gases that pass each other in counterflow, but in separate channels to prevent any intermixing. This technology enables environmentally compatible exploitation of crude oils with a high sulphur content, meaning a sustainable improvement in Petrobras’ environmental footprint. The sulphuric acid obtained from this process is then sold to the chemical industry for further processing. The plant is being to be built by the EBE / Alusa consortium.
On April 12th, having met all environmental requirements and processes established by the awardwinning social enterprise BioRegional, Imbera has officially established its commitment to work within the One Planet Living framework, for a more sustainable production and operation. In a presentation led by Pooran Desai, co-founder of BioRegional and international director of One Planet Communities; Mariano Montero, Managing Director of Alpunto from the FEMSA Group; and Hernán Mendoza, Refrigeration Director of Imbera, they described the 10 guiding principles of sustainability in which One Planet Living is based on. The One Planet initiative sustains that we’re consuming resources and polluting the planet at a level the earth cannot sustain, therefore proposes specific actions to achieve a world in which we are living happy, healthy lives within the natural limits of the planet – wherever we live in the world – having left sufficient space for wildlife and wilderness. Imbera is the first company of its industry, worldwide, to make the commitment to work within the One Planet Living framework, and the first one to do so in the Americas. “In Imbera we continually strive to ensure that all production and operation processes generate the lowest environmental impact possible, and we are pleased to have met the guidelines established by BioRegional, to work in a more sustainable way, even if it meant the restructuration of certain processes. From now on, Imbera is firmly committed to work within the One Planet Living framework, to help reduce the impact of its operations on the environment, in a significant manner”, said Alfonso Garza Garza, Executive Vice-President of Human Resources and Strategic Procurement, Business Processes, and Information Technology. “Growth in emerging economies must be green growth. There is a fantastic opportunity for countries such as Mexico to create a future where a vibrant economy supports a healthy planet. Imbera’s commitment to One Planet Living is world-leading and a great example for other companies in the Americas”, declared Pooran Desai. In recent years, Imbera has intensified its efforts to develop technology that reduces the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of its commercial refrigerators, mainly through energy and maintenance costs. So far, it has achieved a reduction of 76% by implementing systems like the Functions´ Intelligent Control (CIF by its Spanish acronym – Control Inteligente de Funciones), designed by Imbera, which allows energy savings of up to 20%, as well as anticipating and diagnosing potential liabilities, managing assets, capturing information and even communicating in real time with the cooler.
