Phoenix House 1140 Oregon Street, Lawrence KS 523 SF Dirt Works Studio Phoenix house is a small home, designed and built by myself and the other third year KU architecture students in Dirt Works studio. This house is uniquely CLT, cross laminated timber, walls and frame. Phoenix House is a place of rebirth, the tenants of the home will be coming out of homelessness and be given a place of their own to get on their feet.

Working with a non profit group, Tenants to Homeowners, all money for the build has been raised or donated, and our labor force of 14 students is volunteer.

CLT Cross Laminated Timber

Phoenix House is structured with CLT panels as the walls and roof with plywood spline at the joints and steel connections between the CLT walls and concrete floor.

Through the design and construction documentation phase of this build I’ve learned what must be done in order to get a permit set approved and how to make a document set in Revit.

The exterior of the building is wrapped in black concrete with a Finnish pine structure creating a contrast in the building and focus on lighting.

Through other architect’s work such as Alvar Alto and books written by Henry Plummer, I used nordic lighting methods, such as skylights to bring in as much ambient daylight as possible to flood the creative spaces.

The building intends to be a business incubator and facilitate interaction between the communit

ty and small businesses.

The green spaces on the first and second floors provide fresh air and colorful vegetation to the multi-use space.

Fritted glass encloses the space while magnifying the natural light entering through the green spaces providing warm ambient lighting throughout.

Touches of warm wood rap the space on the floors, ceiling, and in the green spaces.

Wood tones are known to promote natural light in a space and recent psychological studies show wood in interior spaces promotes a healthy environment.

The site is located in the liv of downtown Lawrence known as Street. The flourishing site has a u condition of parti walls, sharing b north and south walls of Ember w neighboring businesses.

OTHER WORKS I seek to make all my clothing designs sustainable and continue a Circular economy.
