IELTS 雅思

TOEFL 托福

By Jack L.A.

O

ne pleasant afternoon last summer, sweetmilk fresh in my memory, a phone call came through at the office. Our Chinese team wasn’t around since they had gone out for lunch, and because I had some unfinished work to attend to, I ate my lunch in the office. I picked up the phone and a lady responded and started talking in Chinese: “Hello, is that Aceish Education?” “Yes,” I answered in Chinese. I introduced myself and asked her how I may help. She talked for a while thinking I was Chinese. “I speak very little Chinese,” I interrupted politely. I could tell from the way she spoke that she was in desperate

4

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

need of some urgent advice and if my advice was spot on, she may enroll her son in our online training program. Anyway, knowing fully well now that I am not Chinese, she spoke English. “I am a parent and my son would like to do his undergraduate studies abroad. I’d like your expert advice regarding the test he should take, IELTS or TOEFL?” “Alright, madam. May I ask a few questions?” I replied. We receive tons of similar calls very often and are always willing to give as much information as possible. So, that kept me wondering why the same questions are being asked on a daily basis despite tons of articles, blogs, books and other free reference materials available in prints and online.

Would-be test takers and their parents are still at a crossroads as to which is which or which of these popular tests is better. It becomes even more complicated If we factor in the increasing demands and popularity of overseas education in China. The most sought after English speaking countries being the USA,UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, and the most popular tests to secure admission into these top tertiary institutions is either IELTS or TOEFL. Before proceeding further, please be informed that both exams are designed to measure the proficiency of a candidate in four skills - Reading, Speaking, Writing and Listening. However, unlike the TOEFL, IELTS measures all of the four skills

FEATURE both tests entail. Nonetheless, I will try as much as possible to expand on them later in the article. Thus, the following guidelines should help you to decide which exam to take if the university you have in mind accept both IELTS and TOEFL.

SPEAKING

independently. While would-be test takers may have read thousand if not millions of materials related to these exams online and offline, I believe an overwhelming majority of students are still unclear as to which of these tests they should take. As an experienced IELTS tutor and former City and Guilds (UK) examiner, I am going to shed more light into this as best as I can by highlighting some important points. However, before proceeding further, kindly bear in mind that both exams are designed to measure the proficiency

of candidates in four skills reading, speaking, writing and listening. But, unlike TOEFL, IELTS measures all of the four skills independently. This in effect means you are awarded separate marks in each of these skills and your total score is an average. So, if for example, you score looks like this: reading 6.0, listening 7.0, speaking - 7.0, writing - 6.0. Your total score will be 6.5. It may be a good idea to skimread the diagrams above. Having gone through the diagrams, I believe you now have a rough idea of what

1. Are you passionate about technology or not? Clearly the most distinctive features of the two tests is the speaking section. While in IELTS you are asked questions by an IELTS examiner, in TOEFL, on the other hand, you take the test online via a computer that means you get to interact with a digital assistant when you respond to questions. For technophiles, this is something to be jubilant about. Unsurprisingly, this may be a put-off for technophobes. So, If you are the shy type,TOEFL may be your better option. If you are the outgoing type and prefer talking to a real person rather than a computer, then IELTS should be your preferred option. 2. Timing and sections In TOEFL you are given 6 questions which have to answered within 20 minutes. IELTS speaking test comprises of 3 sections lasting between 11-15 minutes. 3. Accent If you prefer American accent, then go for TOEFL. If you are comfortable with standard British or Australian accent, you should take IELTS. Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

WRITING 1. Pen and paper vs Typing This is what differentiates the two tests in this particular section. While you are required to use pen and paper in IELTS, TOEFL, requires you to type your answers. This is a great escape route for those who are not confident about their handwriting. 2. Format There are two questions you have to answer in both TOEFL and IELTS, but the format varies. In TOEFL writing section, you are given a passage to read following a two minute lecture on the same topic. You are required to write a short answer to a question based on the

6

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

same topic being discussed. Most students prefer this as you do not need to have an expert knowledge of the topic. The second question in the writing section is a discursive essay which is similar to an academic essay. With IELTS, It is a different format altogether. There are two writing sections - academic and general. The academic writing test which is 60 minutes long comprises of two sections tasks 1 & 2. In Task 1, you are required to write a summary of at least 150 words in response to a particular graph (bar, line or pie graph), table, chart, or process (how something works, how something is done). This task

tests your ability to select and report the main features, to describe and compare data, identify significance and trends in factual information, or describe a process. You should spend 20 minutes on this task. Task 2 is more demanding as you are expected to produce a written argument on a given topic and to organise your answer clearly. You also have to provide some examples to support your points. A minimum of 250 words is needed and, since it is longer than task 1, you are advised to spend roughly 40 minutes on this task. Regarding the general writing test , it has two sections - tasks 1 and 2. The test is 60 minutes long and has two writing tasks

of 150 words and 250 words. In Task 1, candidates are asked to respond to a situation, by writing a letter, for example, requesting information or explaining a situation. In Task 2, candidates write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

LISTENING The major differentiating factor between TOEFL/IELTS in terms of the listening section is the duration. While IELTS test lasts for about 30 minutes, TOEFL listening test is 60 minutes long. Besides this, accents, question types and context of the questions also differ. The context of the TOEFL listening section is fully academic whereas the IELTS listening section, contexts

can be from both academic and social in nature. The TOEFL listening test follows a multiple choice question format and if you perform well in questions that follow this sort of structure, that is a big plus. However, In the IELTS test, questions vary from sentence completion to matching headings, diagram labeling to true/false statements.

READING Just like the listening section, TOEFL’s reading section comprises of multiple-choice questions only. IELTS, on the other hand, has a wider range of question types. Having mentioned that, while the reading sections of IELTS and

TOEFL both have the same time limit; 60 minutes, they vary both in terms of question and context. Reading is the second part of the IELTS test, and takes 60 minutes. It consists of three Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

FEATURE or sometimes four reading passages of increasing difficulty, and there is a total of 40 questions to answer. Though you can mark and write on the question paper, you must enter your answers on the reading answer sheet, and be aware that no extra time is given for transferring your answers from the test booklet to the reading answer sheet. Just like the writing section, this section has both the academic and general training parts and these are graded at the same level. However, because the texts in the academic reading test are more challenging overall than those in the general training test, more questions need to be answered correctly on a general training test to receive the same grade. The TOEFL reading test consists of three passages and contains 39 questions. There are 13 questions on each passage.

GRADING SYSTEM AND EXAM DURATION. TOEFL lasts approximately 4 hours. It is graded between 0-120.You can expect to get your result after 10 days of the test date. IELTS lasts about 2 hours 45 minutes. It is graded between 0-9. Speaking tests may be held a few days before or after the test date. You may expect to get your result 13 calendar days after the test date.

TEST DURATION IELTS is a shorter exam than TOEFL requiring 2 hours 45

minutes. TOEFL takes about 4 hours to complete. So if you want to give a shorter exam, then go for IELTS.

SCHOOLS IN THE US OR UK If you are applying to an institution in the US, then consider taking TOEFL since it is more widely accepted in the US. For the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and other European countries, IELTS is the preferred choice. Canada and a few others accept both IELTS and TOEFL depending on universities/colleges. That does not mean tertiary institutions in the US do not accept IELTS though. In fact, Over 2,000 institutions and programs in the USA accept IELTS scores as proof of English language skills. However, minimum score requirement may vary from 6.0 to 9.0 depending on universities and programs. It is accepted by most Ivy League colleges. It is used by programs

at top 50 US universities with the most international students. Community colleges are not have joined the bandwagon as they are more willing to admit students with IELTS test results into their programs. It is imperative to visit the school’s website or contact the international admissions department to enquire about their preferred test. Now that you have a clear idea of the structure, contents, duration and acceptability of these two tests at tertiary institutions around the world, which one of them would you prefer and why? Feel free to share your ideas or better still direct any enquiries to me via my email, QQ or Wechat. NB: I will be fielding any questions regarding these tests and other queries related to overseas education in my next article. I will also be giving tips on how to ace your IELTS exam. So, kindly send in your queries well in advance.

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

10

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

My observations on English training in China

By Michelle Lan

I had a hard time choosing the topic for this article. Instead of simply promoting my English studio’s courses, I, as a language trainer for almost 10 years and a new mother of a BritishChinese boy, would rather help out with most people’s concerns about English training.

12

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

1. Hello there, my kid is 4 years old. Is it too late to start learning English? It is completely understandable that a lot of parents simply forget to organize their children’s English education while they are busy with their daily childcare duties. However, what makes it worse is that many language companies seem to set the age

of 3 as the perfect and prime time for every single kid to begin, leaving parents feeling extremely guilty and uneasy with the fear that their beloved ones will be left far behind. To be honest, from my personal experience, every single year can be a good start. The key to a successful English training is to carefully observe children’s individual linguistic and cognitive development and their interests

FEATURE at different stages. (Think about it, doesn’t your kid learn to say what they like most in Chinese first?). If asked, I would suggest that the age of 5 is probably a much better time to start (Check our public WeChat account for more articles).

2. Hello there, what textbooks shall I use? In how many years can I finish? What are the outcomes? This is a very typical way of evaluation in HR. However, it is not advisable to apply that to English study for it is more about cultivating ability and results are more intangible. In China, the English training methods are quite conservative, which means, they are in favor of western English textbooks that can guarantee decent service and attract more customers. I am personally for the idea that we learn from whomever is better. But, what we need to be aware of is that all the classic English textbooks are written based on the students’ ability at different stages. That is to say, as a 7-year-old student, a child will be likely to encounter the same topics in all the books. So, what really matters is not necessarily study materials. If you ask about the length of time to finish your English study, I think it is better to ask yourself how much time you would like to spend. Most training centers probably do not want to see you quickly master English due to the fact that they need people to continue signing contracts!

3. Hello there, why can’t I maintain enthusiasm? Judging by all our students in Beijing and Qingdao, we have found that adults are the ones that are the most likely to give up on English study, especially those who are working. This is partially because they have learned how to find excuses at work and gradually get into the habit of trimming the fat from their lives in order to dig out a little time to relax. This will definitely have an effect on both their personal life and study. It is very painful to see that teachers are trying their best to provide help and supervision, however students are going in the other direction. We should completely give up on the idea that we pay for the course so that the teacher should study for us.

4. Hello there, should I learn English words first before anything else? It is inevitable that learning vocabulary is the first step. I have to say speaking the language does require lots of words. According to the research, a non-native English speaker needs around 1000

words to just be capable of handling living in an English environment. Therefore, the question is when we will have learned that many. It may be surprising that in China, after graduating from junior high school, you are expected to have that amount of vocabulary. So,$ in my opinion, everyone has had the foundation in vocabulary but the thing we need to do first is probably change how we learn vocabulary in order to use them correctly! Lastly, after years of hard work and with the help of our lovely students, we managed to set up our warm and wonderful language studio in Qingdao. We are extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to teach different age groups, which enables us to help our students to adjust well to their new English learning environment. I hope all of you can have this magical moment. Look forward to seeing you one day in our studio!

14

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

Successfully Applying to a US University By Whitnae Elizabeth Peters

Applying to any college, in any country, is a daunting endeavor. However, applying to a university or college abroad can be even more headache inducing. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Chinese students apply to institutions of higher education in the United States. Making yourself stand out from the crowd, and earning the approval of an admissions committee is a tall task, but not an impossible one, if you understand what the admissions committees are looking for in an international applicant. As a professional who educates, advises, and studies the flow of mainland Chinese international students into American higher education, I would like to offer the following advice to those hoping to see the words, “Congratulations”, the next time they open their email from a US college or university.

16

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

FEATURE

1

Understand the “Holistic Review Process

It is possible in the US to gain entrance to top-level universities without having the best scores on college examination exams. It is equally possible to get a perfect score on the same exams and have very few colleges willing to accept you. Unlike China, where your Gao Kao score determines the reputation of the school you may gain entrance to, the US has an entirely different way of measuring the potential of future applicants. Admissions committees consider multiple aspects of an applicant, and carefully consider what they can contribute to the campus, academics are important, but they are only a piece of the proverbial puzzle. It is especially

important for applicants from China to have extracurricular activities, demonstrated interest in something besides their grades, and solid recommendations. Whatever you love to learn about or do, get out of the classroom and go find it. Become an expert in that passion of yours, and do something impressive with that knowledge. Admissions officers at toplevel universities are seeking out the next Elon Musk, not someone who plans to blindly follow the ambitions of their parents, instead of their own.

2

Break Stereotypes

So you have been studying classical instruments (such as piano or violin) since age 8,

excel in Mathematics or the Sciences, and plan to take over your father’s company one day? Unfortunately, on paper this makes you sound quite similar to a great number of other Asian applicants, whom you are in direct competition with. While taking on similar hobbies and interests may be a smart choice for domestic students here in China, playing into stereotypes is a good way to get looked over when applying to American higher education. Independence, individualism, uniqueness, and self-motivation are highly prized attributes in American culture. Showcase the attributes of yours that show how different you are from other Mainland Chinese applicants. However, most importantly, convince the admissions committee that those differences will drive your future success.

Prepare Early for Standardized Exams

The 8th or the 9th grade isn't too early to being studying for the SAT, ACT or English language proficiency exams such as IELTS or TOEFL. It can benefit you to begin preparing as early as possible depending on your current ability. It will not kill you to take the PSAT or

a practice test, to get an idea of what kind of score you are currently capable. All of these tests are rigorous, and if you begin studying a year or six months before you plan to sit for them, you may find yourself at a disadvantage. Luckily, there are countless tutors available to help you along the way, and reasonably priced textbooks with practice tests widely available online. Your test scores

are not the full image of your potential as an applicant, but having a good score on these exams will be an important aspect of your application.

Look for the Perfect Fit/ Do your Research

Ivy league schools are definitely places where you can do well with the right attitude and

motivation, but they are not the right schools for everyone. Depending on your desired major, there are hundreds of schools that offer a much better education than Ivies. Looking to become an Entrepreneur after getting your Bachelor’s degree? Take a look at Babson College or University of Houston. Both beat out Harvard University for undergraduate programs according to the Princeton

Review. Want to study at the best college for future doctors? Check out University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Last year 90% of UNC students who applied to American medical schools were accepted. Can Stanford’s undergraduate class boast that statistic? I think not. Look for the right college program for you, not just a flashy name recognized by your mother’s mah zhong circle, and you will be glad you did.

5

Be Honest on your Application

I’m not going to weigh in on whether you should pay an agency to help you apply to University. Certainly, they can help out a lot when your parents do not speak fluent English, or if you are not very familiar with the US application process. However, it is widely known by US admissions committees, that when agents are involved, there is a higher probability that false or inaccurate information will find its way onto a student’s application. Do not let an agent convince you to lie or even exaggerate the truth. People reading your application are on the lookout for those who are not representing themselves truthfully, particularly from Mainland Chinese applicants, who have received a lot of bad press in the last 10 years with accusations of cheating and plagiarism. It’s just not worth it; you probably will not get away with being dishonest.

Studying abroad in the US can be an eye opening and rewarding experience for those who have English and academic abilities that are up to the task. Living abroad will change you for the better, and life in America has a lot to offer those willing to do the work. I hope you find these tips helpful in your application journey and wish you the best of luck.

20

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

1

YCIS: NEW SEASONS Hello, my name is Marie, I am 13 years old, and I just started going to Yew Chung International School-Qingdao this year. Now, you are probably wondering why I named my article “New Seasons”. The truth is that it's the first time I have had a chance to experience these changes. You see, even though I have a US passport I was born and raised in the “mitad del mundo,” Quito, Ecuador. Being in the middle of the world, you don’t get “interesting seasons,” It’s basically rain or not so rainy. Because it was my first year in China I was really scared, especially about school. I had to leave my old school in Quito, where I had gone for 5 years, and the great friendships I had made, just so I could have a new adventure. I’m sad to tell you this, but after all of my years of experience being a student, school is not only about making friends (that’s the sad part). School work, on the other hand, was what really got me shaking when I arrived at YCIS-QD. I had

to learn a brand-new language. Really? Who could know that the different ways you pronounce the same word could mean 4 totally different things? YCIS really made me feel welcome by preparing a “New Student Integration Day” the week before school started. I met new people and later figured out that we are all part of a big family. Being in an international school means that everybody comes from different places. I quickly realized I was not the only one that came from another place and that I had nothing to be afraid of, but I still was. Now what we all have been waiting for: leaves, that’s what I saw leaves! At first I thought it was just the Qingdao wind blowing really hard causing the leaves to fall. How could I have been so naive? Yes, it was the wind blowing the leaves right off the trees, but this was just the beginning. There I was getting ready to go to school when I took a quick glance out

the window and this weird white substance was slowly falling down until it reached the ground. I found myself staring at it for a while until I shouted: “SNOW!” It wasn’t like movie snow if you know what I mean. It was there, hard to see, tiny: but there it was, snow! My “first famous” winter passed and spring came (which I totally love). And here I am thawed out and writing this article. It was a pretty crazy year for me but I loved every part of it. I hope I can learn new amazing cultural things about this country because where ever I go there are always new things to see or admire. Like any human I have bad days: I get frustrated with the language, or the food, or I simply can’t memorize a character…but the truth is that China has been a wonderful country so far. Even though I have been to many Asian countries in the last 6 months, I always feel welcome when I come back to China, and now to a place I can call “home.”

ISQ: TRANSITIONING WELL “Transition” is a word that International Schools are all too familiar with.

Even those who stay for years are constantly rediscovering what their own normals look like.

Someone is always new. New families. New students. New teachers, wrestling through the transition of their new life, their new community and their new normal here in China. Simultaneously someone is always on the way out. A different set of families, students and teachers whose time with us is coming to an end are seeking to process the joys and pains of transition all over again.

International schools are transient by their very nature. People who live abroad don’t stay forever so change will always be a part of the equation. Many schools spend time, energy and resources considering how they can support incoming students, parents and staff. In recent years some schools have moved to the next level and started to consider how they might support those same people as they transition out. However, what will really set schools apart will be when they invest in the people who are not moving but are always transitioning.

However, it is becoming increasingly evident that “transition” is not just a word that applies to newcomers and outgoers. Transition is an ongoing, ever changing, inevitable reality for anyone living an international life. We love our community but our community never stops changing.

The International School of Qingdao and its sister schools in the International School Consortium have introduced the language of Starting Well,

Staying Well and Leaving Well into our communities. While there is no sure fire, single way to ensure that those things happen we have committed to building ideas and resources around each of them. The result we are committed to is healthier, stronger and more stable schools even in the context of never ending change. Bio Jerry Jones lives with his family in Qingdao and his children attend iSQ. may put individuals at risk of marginalisation, meaning talent in society goes uncultivated and creates school environments that neither reflect nor foster tolerance for real-world diversity. These days, policies in countries with the highest educational rankings lean towards social and educational inclusion for learners with SEN.

In response to the current momentum towards mainstreaming of Special Educational Needs (SEN) students, Suzannah Driscoll, Education and Development Coordinator at Concorde Education Services reaches out to experts around the globe to gain insight into what works best.

Why do we need to talk about SEN? Research shows that around 13% of students have Special

Education Needs ( SEN ). It is likely that all teachers will at some point in their career encounter a student who could do with additional support. We should try not to ignore this as it is important that we enable equal opportunities to all students. Moreover, SEN is becoming an increasingly important area for teachers to clue up on since it is generally encouraged that SEN learners are included in mainstream schooling as much as possible. Exclusion

However, inclusion requires work on the part of the school and the teacher. Speaking of her experience in China, South Korea and the UK, Lucy Lamazarez (teacher/trainer and former SEN Lead for the British Council) explains that teachers often have serious difficulty accommodating SEN learners without compromising the quality of education for the rest of the class. This is particularly true in developing country contexts, adds Emilia Fernandez (specialist in teaching the visually impaired), referring to the situation in Columbia, where there are larger class sizes and more limited resources. Including SEN learners can provide both a challenge and an opportunity to change dynamics in schools and classrooms and create a kinder environment. Yet, meeting SEN learners’ needs

SCHOOL FEATURE

is not something that can be achieved without discussion. We need to reach out to experts, colleagues and students alike to discover the best ways to include SEN learners. Situations several experts had resolved included: “Finding material of an appropriate level for all of the class was impossible”

è “Different coloured and larger sized reading materials were provided and abacuses were offered in Math” - Emilia “Cultural values made students unwilling to seek help”

è “Parents and students were spoken to about conceptions on additional support” - Lucy

“I couldn’t cope with all the behaviour issues in the class”

è “An assistant was requested for the teacher” - Lucy

How do I know if my student has SEN? | A student has special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. | Oftentimes, SEN is a result of a pre-existing condition, such as dyslexia or autism, but SEN may also be an effect of personality or circumstance alone. SEN can be very difficult to spot because no two students are ever the same. Just as any student may struggle with one aspect or multiply aspects of learning, so may a student with SEN. This could be anything

from numeracy to behaviour. If you notice a student who you think could benefit from additional or alternative education, you should notify a member of your school leadership team and they should be able to investigate it.

What can teachers do to include and aid SEN students? Any teacher can use these three tricks to support SEN learners without specialist training: Firstly, give clear, consistent and positive instruction. Use the same wording as the last time you gave the Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

33

instruction and focus on ‘do’ rather than ‘do not’ to give students something to aspire towards. It may also help to use colours and visuals to clarify instructions for SEN learners. Secondly, focus on classroom dynamic. You may want to co-create a classroom code of conduct, develop a buddy system through which learners are responsible for each other’s learning or give them shared tasks to make the classroom a cooperative one. Thirdly, feng shui your classroom. Mixing up the furniture and seating plan is a great way to make students mingle and build friendships. It is also useful for observing which students work well together, and which benefit most from sitting near the front. Also consider asking your school for props to create a multisensory learning environment.

34

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

What could your school be doing? You should not feel like it is your sole responsibility to provide for SEN learners in your classroom. But, as Lucy remarks, “many schools do not yet have in place the infrastructure to meet all their students’ needs”. Therefore, a number of provisions may be worth suggesting your school implement. All school leadership teams should have an appointed member of staff for SEN support. Leadership may be able to assist through training workshops, safeguarding policies, sign posting, handover reports and specialist or volunteer assistants. 8 Tips for Essay Writing Success When it comes to academic writing, the writing style is just as important as the essay content. We have pooled together a list from our highly qualified editors of advice and common errors to help ensure that your academic writing style is not letting you down. If you have a poor writing style, your essay mark will unlikely reach above 60 points at university level, regardless of the strength of the ideas you present. Follow these tips and start to notice the difference!

1

The introduction is vital: Your introduction summarises your essay in a succinct way and compels interest. Writing your introduction last, once your essay is complete, is age-old advice:

36

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

definitely follow it. Put forward your main argument, following up with a few elements of how you have reached your conclusions. What will the reader discover from your piece? What are your key points?

2

Avoid using “I”: Instead of, “In this essay I will cover…” consider phrases such as, “The purpose of this essay is to explore…” or, “This essay will examine the evidence relating to…” Notice that such a small change has significantly changed the tone of the sentence.

3

Be critical: The key objective when writing an essay is to demonstrate your ability to think critically. If

you don’t analyse, and instead spend your essay simply reciting other people’s arguments, then those top grades are going to elude you. ‘Poke holes’ in the texts you are exploring. Unless you take this critical route, your grades will continue to languish in the 60-something range.

4

Link your paragraphs: Paragraph linking is essential for top marks. If you make points that appear unrelated, a marker will not see, or follow, the development of a comprehensive argument. Simply introduce the next paragraph with “An alternative perspective on this argument can be drawn from…” or use brief links such as “Similarly…” and “Alternatively…”.

SCHOOL FEATURE

Article by Proof Master

5

Relate back to the title: Marks are certainly lost if your marker asks: “Is this relevant?” Relating back to the title boosts marks because you are explicitly answering the question. One simple sentence outlining “The evidence presented in this paragraph appears to confirm…” suddenly makes your inclusion of a point indisputably clear.

6

Conclude: Vague conclusions do not score high marks. What did the evidence tell you? Do you agree or disagree with the title? Are you tentatively leaning in one direction but think there’s more research to be done? “The current conclusions drawn from research are based on inadequate sample sizes, therefore it would be inaccurate to draw any conclusions, despite the evidence appearing to agree with the title.” sounds more conclusive than “More research is needed to answer this question”.

7

Get your references right: Unless your sources are one hundred per cent cited and in the correct format, your marks are never going to make it past average. Check your university’s citation style guide and follow it to the letter.

8

Be proof perfect: Grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and typos are a sure-fire way to lose marks. Even if you have presented a critical piece of work, if it is littered with faults then you will quickly lose credibility. If you are in any way unsure, make a wise investment in a professional proof reading and editing service. Your university will support it providing the service follows its policy.

What Makes a School Truly International? There are more international schools around the world than ever before, but behind the name “international school,” there are actually several differentiating factors for parents to consider. So, what does being an “international school” really mean, and how does it benefit students?

National versus international At many international schools for expatriate children, the environment and curriculum

replicate the education provided in certain countries, and these schools are therefore “national schools” in an international setting. In contrast, at Yew Chung International School of Qingdao (YCIS-QD), the curriculum is designed to engage students in an international setting and explore global citizenship as the central focus of student learning experiences. The YCIS language program contributes to the international environment by ensuring students are able to focus on the essence of language as the

tool for making the connections between cultures and ideas. According to Jeroen Gakes, co-principal at YCIS Qingdao, “Our international curriculum is created from the best elements of world research in designing student learning. It provides our students with a global, rather than domestic learning experience.”

international school experience. Mr. Gakes continues: “As an international school for the children of foreign passport holders, our students are the guests of their host country. In order to integrate with our host community and nation, and to be able to take away more from their time while living overseas, we design our learning program to help students understand the culture, communicate in the language, and engage with Chinese society in much deeper and richer ways. In addition to intensive English language learning, our Chinese language program includes Chinese cultural studies designed to help our students learn about, and engage with Chinese culture. This combination of language and culture in the program of learning at YCIS enables our students to develop an understanding of, and appreciation for the values of Eastern and Western cultures.”

Our international curriculum is created from the best elements of world research in designing student learning. Educational innovation As with any discipline, pedagogy changes with time, and therefore educational leaders must strive to ensure they constantly review best practices in order to provide students with optimal learning. “Our international staff have worked in a wide range of different education systems,” notes Mr. Gakes. “They bring a wonderful variety of knowledge and experiences that add to the diversity and strength of the learning environment. This also allows us to introduce cuttingedge educational best practices into our program.”

more than just a setting with a diverse group of students and teachers. It requires embracing the local language and culture, identifying the best educational practices from around the world, and providing a strong educational base to ensure students are able to adapt to, and thrive in any learning program around the world. A truly international school is one where global mindedness is at the heart of every decision, action, and interaction between the members of the community. YCIS best exemplifies such a school, benefiting students not only during their time in China, but also well into their futures.

Questions You Should Ask an International School

54

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

SCHOOL FEATURE Are you looking for an international school in Qingdao? This handy guide will help you ask questions to guide you in your decision process. International transitions are complex. You have to find a new apartment, establish friendships, discover places to shop, learn new methods of transportation, and more. Let us take some of the guesswork out of the school search process by sharing the Top 5 Questions You Should Ask an International School Guide. It could start meaningful conversations with potential schools to find the best fit for your family’s educational needs.

1. Tell me about your accreditation(s). Accreditation is the process that schools undergo to be recognized as a progressive school by an established accrediting organization. An accreditation team comes to each accredited school to evaluate every aspect of the program from curriculum to financial stability. They also ensure that the school has solid plans, resources, and personnel to provide a suitable learning environment.

2. How do you handle different skills, abilities, and languages in the classroom? International schools enroll students from all over the world. Students come from a variety of linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. Because of the diversity in an international school, it

is important to know how teachers use differentiation in their classroom. Differentiation is the practice of using a variety of activities to ensure each and every student learns the content. Teaching staff who genuinely knows how to differentiate can truly help your child achieve their full potential. It is also wise to ask what additional resources the school has to support student learning, and how they are used.

3. What is your vetting process for hiring teachers? Teachers and staff members at each school are an important part of your child’s education. Ensuring that teachers have content knowledge for the age and subject(s) they are teaching, classroom management experience, and a love to see their students learn are good signs that your child will be in good hands. Questions regarding the vetting process should include whether all teachers have a clean background check and references have been contacted, whether a passing score on a psychological exam is a requirement, as well as questions regarding the school’s program for staff professional development. These will provide you with confidence that the staff are able to teach your children well, and that they are safe partners in your children’s education.

4. What curriculum and standards do you use and how does it impact daily

learning for students? Curriculum and standards are important because they are the guidelines teachers follow as they direct learning each day. When standards are being met, students can achieve the goals or learning outcomes established for the school.

5. How can parents get involved in school life? As a parent, you choose to partner with a school for your child’s education. What are the ways you can be involved in the school? Is there a parentteacher organization/association to join? Is it active and vibrant? As a parent, what are the guidelines and opportunities for volunteering, serving on parent committees, and engaging with your child’s education? Use these five questions as a conversation starter on your next school tour or contact with an admissions office. Scan the QR code below for five additional questions that you might find helpful in your school search.

Inquiry Based Learning at Qingdao No.1 International School of Shandong Province Tell me and I forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I will understand. The last part of this statement, is the essence of inquirybased learning (IBL), and our instructional ideology at QISS. Inquiry-based learning stems from John Dewey’s constructivist theory, that people construct their own knowledge and understanding of the world through experiencing things and then reflecting on what they have observed and experienced. At QISS, we believe that children learn best when they ask questions and investigate solutions. They add new knowledge as they gather information, discuss their discoveries and experiences, and reflect on new knowledge. In other words, student learning is not based on teacher-centered activities that emphasize recall, but rather they are developing higher order thinking skills.

58

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

SCHOOL FEATURE

This requires our learners to synthesize, interpret and evaluate information by engaging in student-centered learning experiences that are both high in rigor and relevance. Our aim at QISS is to develop lifelong learners and future leaders, who have the competence to think in complex ways and to apply their knowledge and skills to unknown future problems. An inquiry cycle starts with a ‘hook’ event, a memorable learning experience that sparks the child’s curiosity and interest in the wider topic, and introduces the ‘Essential Question’. The hook is designed to activate student’s prior understanding and schema. Essential Questions often involve cross-curricular themes, and in their nature, require higher-order thinking in order to arrive at answers. They are designed to allow students to see the bigger picture of how the world around us works.

From this point onwards, students engage in a variety of differentiated activities. QISS students can be found doing handson learning experiences, applying the scientific method for investigation, developing strong research, literacy, and 21st century skills. Throughout the process, students reflect on their observations and construct understanding and knowledge. To apply and demonstrate their understanding, students work collaboratively on rigorous and real-world task goals. Recent examples of such task goals include a student-led magazine and book publishing for Language Arts classes; creating loan- and investment plans for potential customers in the subject of Mathematics;

designing gardens, and constructing sustainable models of agriculture such as aquaponics systems in Science; defending a stance in moot court in Social Studies, just to name a few. We believe that fostering a strong community involving all students, their families, and teachers is essential to a child’s social, emotional and academic development. At the end of each unit of inquiry, the whole QISS community comes together to act as audience for our students’ authentic assessments, which we call Key Assignments. On these most important days of the school year, students present their inquiry-projects, and transfer their understanding to QISS families and community members.

When numbers are not enough to define success Mark Brierly, Head of Secondary at Qingdao Amerasia International School, takes a closer look at what sets the International Baccalaureate program apart from any other academic program.

When I moved to Qingdao I thought it was only going to be for a year but this is now my fifth year at QAIS and I have just signed on for several more years. I love being here. The school is a happy and vibrant learning environment and everyone on campus is working hard to help make everyone the best possible version of themselves

that they can be. Day after day, month after month and year on, year out our school simply gets better and better. Not many schools can make that claim with sincerity and honesty. We even started this year off by being fully accredited by CIS (the Council of International Schools) which has given us a route to sustained improvement over the

next five years. Visitors to our school often ask why our school feels so welcoming, why our students achieve so well and I joke, “If I knew that, I’d put it in a bottle and sell it. I’d make a fortune!” But joking aside, I feel blessed to work with such special students and remarkable teachers and I Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

put our success down to placing the student at the center of all that we do. That’s why we’re a three program International Baccalaureate(IB) school as well as the only accredited school in Asia by the American Montessori Society. Each of these programs puts the student clearly in the center, and all decisions we make at any level consider the student first. The IB program takes pride in the quality of the education it offers. It encourages a positive attitude toward learning through a framework that encourages students to learn by asking challenging questions, reflecting critically, developing strong research and communication skills and participating actively in community service. I feel that placing the student in the center of learning is the real reason for our success. Sadly,

62

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

in many schools, regurgitating textbooks in examinations is considered the major part of learning and although knowing and understanding are important foundations for more powerful conceptual thinking, they are only a small part of what students need to know. It is also worrying that so many books get things wrong! Did you learn the tongue taste-map at school? Have your children learned it? The tongue tastemap shows areas of the tongue responsible for taste: Sweet in the front, salty and sour on the sides and bitter at the back. Due to a mistranslation of a German scientific paper from 1901 into English, this myth has been reproduced in thousands of books, worldwide, for a century. These boundaries don’t exist and worse still, it was debunked in 1974 yet still falsely thrives. In our curriculum at QAIS,

students learn to become independent learners themselves and to develop, among many other things, critical thinking so that they do not take ideas at face value and seek out evidence to support or reject claims that other people make. This also means active thinking and participation in classes. For example, in science class, students not only verify ideas and information through experiments, but they regularly design and perform their own labs; in Design, through project management, they create their own solutions to problems; in Humanities they actively sift through data to look at historical events or attitudes from multiple-perspectives. However, it’s in the IB Diploma (IBDP), the IB college entrance program, where students really develop their academic and social skills in preparation

for success in college and life beyond. This is particularly true of the IB Theory of Knowledge (ToK) course. In ToK, students reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and on different areas of knowledge and consider the role and nature of knowledge in their own and other cultures. They also become aware of themselves as thinkers and appreciate the complexity of knowledge issues in society so that they can act responsibly as both local and global citizens.

significantly more prepared for college-level coursework involving research than former AP students. This, and many other reasons is why our school dropped AP as our college entrance program and took the IB route – it simply prepares our students better for life. As Marillee Jones, former Director of Undergraduate Admission at MIT said, “Send us prepared students a la IB … It is the ‘best’ high school prep curriculum an American school can offer.”

In the IBDP, students also complete the extended essay, an independent, self-directed piece of research, culminating with a 4,000-word paper. A largescale study of students at the University of Virgina by Inkelas et al, concluded that former IB students at the University were

This can also be seen in how the IB is being rated against other college entrance examinations. The Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment authority produced a comparison table that calculates the maximum IBDP score of 45 points as equivalent to ten grade 5 AP

scores, or five HKDSE of 5*** or five British ‘A’ levels all at A*. Last year, QAIS started eAssessments for 16 year-old students at the end of our IB Middle Years Program and the results were that all our students obtained 7 or more examination passes, each one the equivalent of a C grade or higher in IGCSE. The focus on student inquiry, the active learning and critical reflection really helps support our students to apply their knowledge and understanding to authentic problems. Above all though, our students are engaged, excited, enthusiastic, enjoying learning and becoming, as I mentioned before, the best versions of themselves that they can be.

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

Bright Summer, Bright Smile

Summer is a season for vacations, weddings, and reunions. It is also often a time for Dr. Shanon Li Chief Dentist of accidents Qingdao United Family Hospital with teeth. No matter where I am every summer vacation, whether relaxing in Florida, hiking in Lake Louis in Canada, diving in Phuket Island in Thailand or strolling on the beach in Qingdao, as soon as people hear that I am a dentist, I will almost always get asked a question about their teeth. It is not a surprise because everyone

Shandong Education Guide 2018-2019

has a set of teeth and uses it on a daily basis. Front teeth are so important for a person’s appearance, dignity and even self-esteem. After living in Qingdao for 10 years, I have enjoyed helping many of my expat or local patients recreate their smiles. The aesthetic dentistry I do for my patients covers a wide spectrum of procedures: tooth whitening, tooth-colored fillings, repairing chipped teeth, veneers, porcelain crowns, bridges, periodontal plastic surgery, dentures and implants. There are so many people with concerns about their front teeth and smiles whom we dentists can help. Aesthetic dentistry is my

passion, and I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to learn from internationally renowned doctors in this field when I was in dental school in the United States. Tooth-Colored Fillings Modern, high-density, state of the art composite resin and porcelain material provides a natural look and feel to fillings. It also reserves more of the natural tooth to reduce the amount of repair work necessary in the future. With the use of proper aesthetic dental techniques, it will be difficult to tell that you have fillings! Veneers Veneers are thin layers of

SCHOOL FEATURE composite material directly applied to the tooth or a thin piece of porcelain made from a dental lab. Porcelain Crown A porcelain crown is an excellent choice to restore a damaged tooth because of its durability, strength and aesthetic. Implant An implant uses titanium to replace the missing root of a tooth. An implant is the best option to replace missing teeth. Periodontal Plastic Surgery Periodontal plastic surgery restores the function and aesthetic of periodontal tissue, which includes gum, bone and ligament. It can include reshaping, reducing or grafting of bone, gum tissue or ligament. Orthodontics Besides the procedures I routinely perform, our orthodontists can help patients with the alignment of their teeth. The function comes first and the aesthetic follows. Our orthodontists do both conventional braces and invisible braces. Our dental team at Qingdao United Family wish you a happy, healthy, bright summer with your bright smile!
