LIVING VEGAN IN CHINA Vegetarianism and veganism are growing movements around the world, but in China, the concepts seem sparsely understood. Meike Sell talks through some of the challenges of veganism here in China.

I

n Germany, where I’ve been vegan for 8 years, everyone kept telling me it was going to be easy to eat vegan in China (I know). The first Chinese foods that came to my mind were rice, noodles, tofu, vegetables, and really really spicy food. Vegan eating has got easier and easier the past few years where I live, in a city

10

where a large number of young, planetsaving students dictate the market. I thought China wouldn’t be too much of a challenge. I had made sure to tell my intern agency about my vegan lifestyle. When I finally arrived around lunch time at my host mom's house, I was greeted

with a big bowl of soup noodles, from the middle of which — to my surprise – squid tentacles smiled up at me. I sighed inwardly. Maybe they forgot to tell her. I sat down with my host mom to carefully discuss my requirements while she was preparing dinner, explaining that I don't

eat any animal products: no meat, no fish, no eggs. She offered me something small and white to eat that I had never seen before and didn’t understand the name of. It didn't really taste like anything, so I just said “hao chi” and smiled. When I went upstairs to my room to look up what it was in my dictionary, after dinner, I found out that it was a type of shrimp. Ok. I must have not been clear enough. Again, using my best Mandarin I tried to explain that I do not eat meat, fish or any other animals. This time I was sure my host mom had understood, because she even asked about the reasons for this (to her obviously very strange) way of living. The next morning at 8 o'clock I was called down for breakfast. Still starving from the long journey and the not very satisfying lunch and dinner the day before, I happily walked down the stairs awaiting a good Chinese breakfast — only without animal products. And what did I find in my bowl? — squid in my noodles.

USEFUL PHRASES TO HELP YOU ORDER!

I am a vegetarian/vegan. 我吃素。 wǒ chī sù. I do not eat any meat or fish. 我不吃任何肉类和鱼类。 wǒ bú chī rèn hé ròu lèi hé yú lèi

It took an exasperated call to my intern agency to stop the animal products appearing in my food. Was it a language barrier, or a refusal to understand? Out of curiosity, I started asking on the street what Chinese people think vegans/vegetarians are.

I do not eat milk, cheese, butter, eggs, honey, chicken stock, meat broth, fish stock, fish sauce or lard. 我不吃牛奶,奶酪,黄油,鸡蛋, 蜂蜜,鸡汤,肉汤,鱼汤,鱼浆, 猪油。 wǒ bú chī niú nǎi, nǎi lào, huáng yóu, jī dàn, fēng mì, jī tāng, ròu tāng, yú tāng, yú jiāng, zhū yóu.

In Chinese there is no real distinction between veganism and vegetarianism. redstarhangzhou.com

Some beers are brewed using animal products! Fortunately, Tsingtao Beer is VEGAN FRIENDLY

素食主义 sushizhuyi means “vegetablefood-ism”, but the perception of that word varies. Older Chinese explained to me that although “vegetarians” did not eat meat, they still ate fish and shrimp and drank milk; younger people seemed a little bit more informed. 21-year-old June told me vegetarians would never eat meat, fish or shrimp. She also knew that some vegetarians do not eat meat out of compassion for animals. Another girl I interviewed was actually a vegetarian, but only because she doesn't like the taste.

The only way to eat truly vegan in China would be to cook everything myself. But then I would miss out on so much of the experience I came here for. When you eat out in China, you have to be a “flexible vegan” and willing to turn a blind eye sometimes, because you never know what the cook uses to prepare your food and what little Mandarin I do have does not help there. Even if I were able to ask how the vinegar he uses is filtered, I think he would probably just laugh at the crazy waiguoren. Being a little flexible with my food choices in China but still not letting go of all my values has proven a challenge, but it is manageable and even enjoyable. So all you vegans and vegetarians out there, don't fret, you will not starve in China!

DIETS: YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG I don’t always start my diet on Monday, but when I do, it’s next Monday.

Lisa Delanty gives some no-BS advice on eating more healthily, for good. The long and short? DITCH the fads!

Y

ou know back in January when you made that New Year’s Resolution to eat healthier and go to the gym more? Be honest… how many of you have already given up and fallen into your old habits? Summer is approaching, and with it a stream of terrifying ‘get that bikini body!’ adverts. Before you panic and frantically Google ‘how to lose fifteen pounds in a week’, STOP! and finish reading this article. When it comes to dieting, it’s very easy to waste precious time, become overwhelmed,

or get lost in a sea of falsified information. You’ve probably heard of the Grapefruit Diet, Master Cleanse, Cabbage Soup Diet, Juice Fasting, Weight Watchers, Atkins Diet, Salt Water Flush, South Beach Diet, Apple Cider Vinegar Cleanse, Hollywood Diet…the list goes on and on. All you need to know is that attempting one of these diets is like using scotch tape to fix a leak: it can work temporarily, but eventually, it’s almost certain to fail and you will have to look for yet another solution. I want to offer some realistic advice when it comes to dieting.

1 START SMALL

If you are deciding to make a change for the better, make it one that fits into your everyday lifestyle. Don’t set yourself up for failure by choosing a goal that is difficult to maintain naturally. For example, instead of changing your entire daily routine, pick one or two things that would make a significant difference (i.e. replace soda with herbal tea, or take a short walk every night after dinner). As those tasks become easier, you can add another small modification so it does not seem like you are depriving or over-stretching yourself. Some say it takes 21 days to change a habit; some say more. So give yourself time to adjust. The key is sticking with the change, however small. With a little commitment, you will climb the victory ladder one step at a time.

Attempting one of these diets is like using scotch tape to fix a leak.

2 DON'T SKIP MEALS

If you choose to “starve yourself skinny,” you are doing extreme harm to your body, not to mention your mind. When you skip meals, your body goes into starvation mode and clings onto your fat stores as a means of protection, lowering your metabolic rate and slowing down the speed of weight loss. You may also find that you begin to acquire intense cravings, and when you finally decide to give in, you eat everything in sight, bingeing on junk food. This is the most vicious cycle of dieting and one of the biggest reasons why crash dieting is terribly ineffective and damaging, and results in higher weight gain than when you began in the first place! Your body is an intelligent and magnificent machine, but you have to look after it for it to work at optimal level.

3 CALORIES IN, CALORIES OUT

Calories (n): tiny little creatures that live in your closet and sew your clothes a little tighter each night. Although this is not the scientific definition of a calorie, for most of us, it might as well be true. When thinking of calories, I want you to picture a balancing scale. On one side is your daily food consumption and on the other is your daily activity including small tasks such as cleaning the house, walking to lunch, taking the stairs, etc. When trying to lose weight, think of food in terms of energy. If you're highly active, don’t be too harsh on your meals; if you sit down for most of the day, think more carefully about quantities. No matter what, it’s essential to include at least

广告 • 特辑

30 minutes of dedicated exercise which can be dispersed throughout the day whenever you have time. And aim to build muscle: muscle has a higher metabolic consumption rate than other body tissues, meaning if you’re muscly, you burn more calories even sleeping or sitting on the couch.

4 SNACK SMART

Why is it recommended to eat five to six smaller meals throughout the day rather than three traditional large meals? First, you never want to be so hungry that your eyes become bigger than your stomach. Secondly, you never want to be so full that you become lazy, sleepy, and eventually crash in the middle of the day. Put simply: eat breakfast within the first hour of waking up, small meals every three hours, and stop at least two hours

before bed. This way, your metabolism will continue to burn calories, you can feel satisfied throughout the day, and you can avoid oversized portions due to being really hungry. Some of my favourite healthy snacks are an apple and peanut butter, yogurt with strawberries and home-made granola, edamame, blueberry protein smoothies, vegetable slices and hummus, pineapple and cottage cheese, unsweetened dried mangoes, and avocado toast. Whatever you do, try to refrain from the endless bag of potato chips, buttered popcorn, french fries, cookies, pastries, and sugary drinks filled with pointless calories.

5 TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK!

If you’re having a hard time staying motivated, find a friend with similar goals and keep each other accountable! A little friendly competition might be the extra push you need to stay away from those tempting morning doughnuts and opt for an outdoor hike instead. A little fresh air and beautiful scenery is good for the soul. It’s also fun to take pictures of your journey and document your progress. You can look back at how far you have come, and hey, your healthy lifestyle choices might just inspire others to do the same.

UNDERSTANDING

TAOISM

By Matt Elwell

T

aoism to many, can be described as the mythical religion everyone has heard about but may not actually know what the teaching and practices entail. It is a very unique religion compared to other common religions such as Christianity and Islam. Before China became a communist state, Taoism was one of the world's most practiced religions. Since then it has been on a rebuild throughout China. Taoism originated in China more than 2000 years ago and is based on unity and opposites. The Yin and Yang play an important role in the make-up of Taoism. The religion can be traced back to the Tao Te Ching, which is one of the first

written books associated with the religion. However, the practices of the Tao can be traced back to even before this as they have been transmitted orally from person to person, from teacher to student. There are hundreds of adaptions of Taoism as each person has their own version or practices. This is because Taoism wishes not to limit the people who practice it to a certain way, but rather let them find their own path. The Tao can be described but not defined as a path, method, principle or way. To define the Tao is to miss the point of the Tao. Each person will have their own path to follow. This is quite difficult to understand

for people who practice Christianity, for example. People from the West tend to want to define things. So why Taoism? Each path, although different, is looking towards the same goal. Each practice will attempt to improve a person’s life in some way, whether that be spiritually or through longevity and health. The Tao asks us to be true to ourselves and trust our instincts. I went on the search to find a little more about Chinese culture and the relationship with Taoism. The Laoshan Shuyuan in Qingdao is a fascinating place to learn more about Taoism and Chinese culture. People come to Laoshan to find good luck and fortune in their lives. Many parts of Laoshan allow people to wish for good luck--this is especially prominent when your zodiac animal is in conflict with the Tai Sui God. There is a poster in one of the temples looking out at the zodiac animals, which illustrates the current animal year,

16

redstarhangzhou.com

广告 • 特辑

and which animals conflict with that animal. In one of the courtyards, there is a line-up of statues representing each of the 12 zodiac animals and the position they finished in the zodiac race. There are red ribbons attached to the front of each animal. This is because the people who were born in that year are wishing for good luck and fortune for the year to come. Every year, there are animals that are said to be unlucky, so people tie the red ribbons on them for good luck. Each animal is also holding a weapon which relates to them as well. There is a particular part of Laoshan that I found very interesting, which is a section where parents of children in school or university can pay money to wish for their children to have good grades throughout the year. They attach tags to red lanterns hanging from the ceiling with their child or children's names on it. At the front of the room is a statute of the study God,

// FEATURES /

whom they pray to for good luck throughout their child’s education. I know I certainly would have loved a little good luck through my last years of high school and into university. We then moved onto the next part of the tour where we got to understand, to a degree, what it would be like to be a student in China. We tried on some traditional Chinese clothing and sat on the tiny desks in front of us. Back in Australia, the learning environment is quite different. I do not know if I could sit down without a chair all day. What is different about Laoshan to most traditional Chinese heritage sites is that it is actually a retreat for people to stay as well. There is also a restaurant for people to have lunch and dinner as well. The restaurant is especially nice in the winter months, to get away from the cold and enjoy a nice meal.

I would recommend traveling to Laoshan whether it be to experience some Chinese culture or to stay for a few nights and have a good meal. The surrounding mountains are truly magnificent and if you are into architecture, I would suggest having a look at the many temples in Laoshan. If you are Qingdao local, adult memberships are only 100 yuan for the year and children can have a year-long membership for just 10 yuan. If you are simply visiting Laoshan, it is open from 9-5 year-round. The best time to visit would have to be near the Chinese New Year to wish for good fortune in the upcoming year.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

早上好(Good morning)

苏慕哲 (AnGie)

Angie Schmidt aka Lǚ shǔ shǔ learns about the art of acquiring a Chinese name.

U

pon arriving in China, I was both curious about and eager to find myself a Chinese name. The complexity and beauty of Chinese characters has always held a fascination for me and I finally wanted to be part of it. During my first week in Qingdao I made friends with a student from Mexico. He told me his Chinese name was ‘big elephant’. Somewhat of an overstatement, I thought, amused. “You know, that’s not really a name, right?”, my Chinese teacher made sure I understood, as we gossiped about him. “But it doesn’t matter”, she continued, “because he is a foreigner and foreigners can choose any ‘name’ they want.” Delighted by this news, I decided then

18

redstarhangzhou.com

and there that I too would choose my Chinese name. My nickname back ‘at home’ is Lemming. “How do you say that in Chinese?”, I wanted to know. A blank stare, deep shoulder shrug, and finally a flurried consultation of an onlinetranslator, followed by numerous images of furry rodents and cliffs, were the answer. Lǚ shǔ, or travelling mouse, was the Chinese equivalent, we learned. The next day at a dinner I was introduced to a new Chinese friend, I decided it was time to take the plunge: “Hi, I’m Lǚ shǔ shǔ !”, I announced proudly. Absolute confusion and did I detect a slight Fremdschämen? I tried a different

pronounciation. Then, the online-translator. A polite smile, that only slightly masked the terror at meeting a madwoman, spread slowly across the face in front of me. A smile, that stayed firmly in place throughout the rest of the evening. Not one to give up easily, I tried my name out on various people during the following week. More confusion, silence, laughter, bemused head-shaking and finally the outright refusal to acknowledge Lu Shu Shu as a name, were the responses. It was time to seek professional help. “I know someone who runs a business giving foreigners appropriate Chinese names”, a friend of mine told me, when

广告 • 特辑

I came to him with my tale of woe. “You can make a living out of that?”, my surprise took him by surprise. He assured me that China was the land of invention and reinvention, that you could make a business out of anything. I knew I had to meet this wily businessman, this ingenious namesmith. A meeting was arranged and took place, over WeChat, of course. My conversation with Yun Seng, the namewhisperer, went something like this: Lǚ shǔ shǔ: Tell me a bit about yourself? Yun Seng: I am an independent name researcher, and have turned my passion into my job. I work with many Mandarin training schools to provide naming services for foreigners. Some of China's name-giving companies and websites, that amongst consultancy services

// FEATURES /

also provide customers with names. Lǚ shǔ shǔ: How important is a name? Yun Seng: In China, the name is not just a pronunciation of symbols, but represents the Chinese people's historical and cultural traditions and values. For foreigners who come to China to work or do business in China, it is equally important to have a suitable Chinese name. It is important to have a very authentic sounding Chinese as a way of showing respect for the Chinese language and cultural identity. Nowadays many top CEOs, foreign ambassadors and even foreign leaders have authentic Chinese names. A name allows people to decide whether or not to trust you, do business or make friends with you. Lǚ shǔ shǔ: In which way is a person connected to their name?

Yun Seng Professional name researcher Yun Seng works in Shanghai, as a consultant and researcher for individuals and companies. On a daily basis he is on the lookout for Mandarin names, fitting to the person and with a positive ‘vibe’ to it that will appeal to Chinese counterparts. Email: Chinesenames@163.com Wechat: chinesenames

redstarhangzhou.com

/ FEATURES // 广告 • 特辑

Yun Seng: In China, a name is condensed history, the shortest poetry, a person’s autobiography. My research shows that each Chinese name corresponds to a mental image, a photo. Is the person fat or thin, tall or short, into which social class was he or she born, and what are his or her moral values, world view and hopes for the future. I like to think of a person as the visualization of a name. Lǚ shǔ shǔ: What are the key elements or criteria when finding a name? Yun Seng: Even for the Chinese people, a good name is a difficult thing. A Chinese name is composed of three parts, pronunciation, figure and meaning. If the three parts are good, in harmony, then it’s a good name. By ‘good’ I mean, the pronunciation should be pleasant to hear, there should be a sense of rhythm, no ambiguity. The characters must form a beautiful figure, the strokes simple yet elegant. The most important part, of course, lies in the meaning and should be in line with the Chinese people's historical traditions, cultural traditions and values. Lǚ shǔ shǔ: Is there anything one should avoid when choosing a name? Yun Seng: A ‘bad’ name does not follow the three-point composition I mentioned. For example a pure transliteration does not come across well. Furthermore, if a Chinese name is too arbitrary, it

20

redstarhangzhou.com

looks like a nickname or a joke. For example: 金小鱼 (Aventurina King), 唐 伯虎 (Annie) 朱力安 (Julien Gaudfroy). Lǚ shǔ shǔ: Can you give me some examples of a successfully chosen name? Yun Seng: CEO of Nestle Peter Brabeck Letmathe( 包必达 ), CEO of the Chairman Blackstone Group Stephen Allen Schwarzman( 苏世民 ) and president of SIEMENS China Richard Hausmann ( 郝睿强 ). Most ambassadors to China have excellently chosen names, for example the German ambassador Michael Clauss ( 柯慕贤 ), the English ambassador Sebastian Wood ( 吴思田 ) or Italy's ambassador Massimo Iannucci Attilio ( 严农祺 ). NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer ( 夏侯雅 伯 ) is another example of a good name. I now, of course, am determined to count myself amongst these illustrious ranks and ask Yun Seng to help me discover my Chinese name. He asks me for my name. Angie Schmidt, I tell him and mention my worry that my Surname might be difficult to pronounce. He dismisses my worry and assures me that ‘Schmidt’ does not sound strange in Chinese. As it turns out, a former German Chancellor was lucky enough to share my surname and he did just fine: 赫尔穆特 • 施密特 or, Helmut Heinrich Waldemar Schmidt.

Yun Seng then takes an hour or two to think before getting back to me. He presents me with my new Chinese name, 苏慕哲 . 苏 (sū )is a common surname in China. 慕 (mù) means ‘like’ and ‘love’. 哲 (zhē) means wisdom, philosophy. “The name means a wise man”, he explains, “but this is a poetic expression”. As long as the name also can be translated to ‘ wise woman’ then I’m okay with, flattered, really and secretly surprised at what I consider a very apt portrayal of my character. “Show it to your Chinese friends and get their opinion”, Yun Seng suggests. I do. “Oh that’s pretty, from a piece of poetry”, one of my friend’s exclaims, “but also quite a mouthful”. “Why not just use Angie?” 安 ān 吉 jí, she writes. She’s right, that is easier. But I don’t want to lose my beautifully poetic name or my nickname, so I just keep them all. I call up my mom and authoritatively inform her that I changed my name, from now on any messages she sends me are to be addressed to 安吉 • 苏慕哲 aka 旅鼠鼠 .

One time we were watching a documentary film about schools in China, and a very cool guy stated his English name was "Elephant". Jokingly, I turned to my brother and told him, dude, that's a cool name, from now on I am going to be called elephant in Chinese. He took it way too seriously, raised his hand and told the teacher about my new decision. She gladly translated it for us and started to call me 大象 (DaXiang). At some point there was no way back, so I just accepted it and with time I learned to love it.

Kalebe, Brazil Cola 可乐

kě lè My Chinese teacher gave me this name after hearing my real name. She assumed it’s kind of similar. I think it sounds cool.

I did not actually choose my Chinese name, 杨博士 (Yang Boshi) but rather it was given to me within the first minutes of my arrival in China. My Chinese colleague said it sounded like my English name, Ian Burns. 博士 (Boshi) means doctor and 杨 (Yang) is a traditional Chinese surname. 杨 and 洋 sound the same and 洋 means foreign. So now I’m Foreign Doctor and everyone thinks it’s quite funny.

Lisa, Germany Smile 笑笑

xiào xiao While travelling through East Asia, I realized that people often mispronounced my name. Lisa had become Risa. Risa means ‘smile’ in Spanish. When I told my Chinese friend this, she decided that this would be my Chinese name: 微笑 (Wēixiào). She then immediately changed it to 笑笑 (Xiào xiao) because it’s cuter and looks just like two people smiling.

Adina, Romania Beautiful Autumn

While studying in the UK, after having lived for a year and a half in China, I became fascinated by one of the female characters in a Chinese soap-opera ( 夏家三千金 ). Her name was 天美 (Tianmei) and she was always happy and optimistic. I immediately decided what my Chinese name would be: 天美 . However, I quickly realized that if I wanted to immerse myself more in the Chinese culture, I also needed a family name. Tianmei's partner in the soap-opera was played by 邱泽 . I looked up the family name 邱 (Qiu), it was a Chinese family name, but not very popular, and it was rather similar with my real family name. It was perfect! My new Chinese name was: 邱天美 (QiuTianmei). Even though I didn't realize what the name meant when I chose it, when I came back to China, I realized that many Chinese friends really liked my name because it sounds like "Beautiful Autumn". Was it luck or simply fate that made me choose this name?

NI-SIGHTS:

WHY HANGZHOU? By Lucas Rondez

In China, there is a famous saying: "In the sky there is paradise, on Earth there is Suzhou & Hangzhou” Yes, Hangzhou is beautiful. Yet this city is not a mere tourist attraction. It is also a paradise for innovation and technology companies in China. The contribution of the entrepreneurs in this city is also unquestionable. From Lu Guanqiu in the 1980s (Wanxiang Group), Zong Qinghou (Wahaha), to Li Shufu (Geely) in the 1990s, to Alibaba and Netease in the Internet era, private entrepreneurs from generation to generation contributed their own blood, sweat, and tears to this city. Whether it is a traditional manufacturing industry or an internet / high-tech enterprise, at least three generations of private entrepreneurs have their roots deep into the ground underlying Hangzhou today.

22

redstarhangzhou.com

Let’s Look At The Facts It is because of their contribution that from 2002 to 2017, the added value of Zhejiang's private economy rose from 53.4 billion yuan to nearly 3.4 trillion yuan, an average annual increase of 13.1%. At present, the private economy has created 56% of Zhejiang's tax revenue, 65% of GDP, 77% of foreign trade exports, 80% of jobs, and 90% of new jobs. As the provincial capital of Zhejiang, Hangzhou is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and the strength of private enterprises is mesmerizing. On August 29th, the National Federation of Industry and Commerce released the Top 500 list of Chinese private enterprises in 2018. Out of the 500 companies, 93 were from Zhejiang Province (the most of any province in China) and 36 of those enterprises were from Hangzhou (the most in any city), for the 16th year in a row.

Additionally, at the end of 2017, Hangzhou had 163 listed companies, ranking the fourth in the country, only behind Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. There are 23 unicorn enterprises (companies witha a valuation of more than 1 billion US dollars) in Zhejiang Province, 22 in Hangzhou, and 120 enterprises in the province with a valuation of more than 100 million US dollars, and 87 in Hangzhou.

Everyone Gets Their Chance Of course, this is merely a fraction of the companies, entrepreneurs, and innovation that truly exists in a tech hub like Hangzhou. Much like the World Cup, these lists only reflect the best of the best, the cream of the crop, and those who go against all odds to win the gold. While this past summer 11 young players from France brought home the gold, there

are many of talented and brilliant players who didn’t have the chance to compete this year, but yet are biding their time, training and working hard everyday to get their own moment on the world stage. Hangzhou and its local ecosystem are the same. While Alibaba, Netease, Geely, Bosch, and a handful of world-renowned companies make consistent headlines and new stories bringing the city into the international spotlight, there’s still an entire world of innovation at root of this tech hub who are working day by day, through sleepless nights and restless vacations to earn their own chance to live up to the expectations a city like Hangzhou has for them. According to statistics, as of the end of 2017, there were 406,600 Small to Mediumsized Enterprises (SMEs) in Hangzhou, a net increase of 80,700 compared with the previous year. The total number of employees reached 3,611,100. In 2017, 85,000 SMEs were added, an increase of 28.41%. The number of newly established enterprises has reached a new record high.

Why? Hangzhou has a great entrepreneurial environment and a strong ecosystem. Entrepreneurs from all corners of the country have come to Hangzhou to pursue their dreams. According to the data of the "2018 Hangzhou Innovation and Entrepreneurship Index", in 2017, the growth rate of entrepreneurship in Hangzhou reached 12.23%, and the growth rate of entrepreneurial projects was 4.09%. The profitability of SMEs continued to increase, and the proportion of profitable enterprises increased from 62.71% in 2015 to 66.28% in 2017. The private economy is an endogenous force for regional economic development. The private enterprises in Hangzhou have grown organically from small to large. The only question remains: "What exactly is Hangzhou doing differently from other cities?" For those who are interested, the answer to this question is also readily available:

// BUSINESS /

For investors, Hangzhou provides a range of free special services for foreign investors, such as investment consulting, investment promotion, and investment protection. In terms of intermediary services in areas of finance, insurance, etc., investors can also easily access relevant business services that are in line with international standards.

How about for Startups? Start-ups across the globe have no funds, no land, no office buildings, and, unfortunately, no status. This situation is simply not allowed in Hangzhou. In addition to implementing tax and financial incentives for SMEs, Hangzhou has established numerous funds to guide social capital into innovation and entrepreneurship, alongside the city’s consistent support of innovation-oriented infrastructure, support systems, ecosystems, and much more. These take form in the shape of business centers, supportive funds & VCs, innovation centers, and the like. As you may have guessed...

nihub is one of them, and we chose Hangzhou for it’s never-ending pursuit of innovation, opportunity, and entrepreneurship.

Foreign-Owned Business— How Can You Find the Way Out?

I

t is getting easier to register a foreign representative office or a foreign-owned company. A rep office can be registered in one month; and a company in a couple of months. But, don’t get too excited. The real trouble begins when you want to deregister the business. It takes at least half a year, sometimes three or four years. What kind of companies can deregister? 1. Companies that are lawfully declared bankrupt. 2. Companies whose business term has expired according to the Articles of Cooperation or dissolved for other reasons. 3. Companies that are merged or disbanded. 4. Companies ordered to close in accordance with the law.

26

redstarhangzhou.com

Can’t we just leave it as it is? If you do not deregister, your business license will be revoked by the authorities. The differences between deregistration and revocation are as below:

violation of the laws and regulation. After the business license is cancelled, the company still exists and should still bear debts, but it is not allowed to carry out normal operations.

Deregistration means that business fits lawful conditions, applies to the original registration authority, goes through liquidation procedures, and eliminates its capacity as a legal subject. The business stops existence. The legal representative’s position is terminated. All employees are dismissed. All debts are repaid. Deregistration is a legal action, and the only result for discontinuing a business.

Once revoked, the legal representative and share holders’ credit will be blemished.

Revocation means that the Industrial and Commercial Administration compels the business to stop all operation for its

1. The legal rep and shareholders will be black listed. They cannot act as legal reps, share holders or supervisors in other businesses. 2. The legal rep cannot get social insurance payments. 3. The legal rep cannot get a mortgage loan or immigrate to other countries. 4. If there are tax issues, the legal rep cannot leave the country, cannot take airplanes

or high-speed trains. If tax is not declared for a long period of time, the fapiao will be locked. 5. Soon, the information of the legal reps and shareholders will be included in the national credibility system. More limitations will be put into place. In a word, once your credibility is damaged, you will be restricted everywhere! Now let’s see why deregistering a business takes such effort.

Deregistering a company involves the State Tax Bureau, the Local Tax Bureau, the Industrial and Commercial Administration, the banks and a lot of other government agencies. Tax issues alone take a big effort. All the company accounts, legers, and financial statements need to be organized. The state tax and local tax reports need to be uploaded. If the business’ previous financial records are not in place, then all needs to be completed. The tax bureaus will audit all the tax issues, to see if there are any anomalies in tax payment or any defrauded tax. For instance, has the business got fapiao for the office it rented? With more steps to take in deregistration, the cost increases. This is why deregistering a business is more expensive than opening a new one.

We have noticed that many foreign-owned businesses are not paying enough attention to deregistration issues. However, along with the improvement of China’s credibility system, it will soon become a reality that damaged credibility will raise limitations everywhere. redstarhangzhou.com

A GUIDE TO BALI By Aileen Wisnieski

M

y husband and I chose to escape to Bali for our winter holiday. It was my second time in Bali, and one of the reasons we picked Bali was because of my fond childhood memories of spending time there with my family. Things have changed quite a bit since then, but I knew Bali would never disappoint. It is strongly recommended that visiting tourists purchase roaming service from their cellular service provider prior to going to Bali. With it, not only will you never get lost, you also get to use an enormously useful APP called “Uber”, which magically summons cheap and readily available car rides…supposedly. I would not know for sure because my absentminded husband—bless his heart—forgot to open up international roaming on his phone. Consequently, we were forced to bargain with a horde of unsanctioned and unscrupulous cab drivers, ambushing gullible tourists at the airport. Thanks to my street smarts, we got a driver to agree to half his asking price to drive us to our resort.

28

redstarhangzhou.com

However, as we later found out, even that was far higher than the cost of an Uber ride. We spent most of the week inside our resort and I didn't feel guilty about it. When you have a spacious, ocean-view room at a beach resort equipped with a beautiful pool, why go anywhere else? You’d be hardpressed to find a restaurant in Denpasar with a view as stunning as our open-air bistro. That is not to say that we don't enjoy occasionally travelling outside the comfort of an air-conditioned beach resort. Bali’s unique, Hinduism-inspired culture is reflected in its architecture,

many structures decorated with beautiful stone carvings that evokes images of Angkor Wat—at least to a novice architecture connoisseur such as yours truly. Some building were clearly Chineseinspired, owing to a history of Chinese immigrants blending in peacefully with the predominant Hindu Balinese population. As a sucker for elephants and orangutans, I booked an event called “Dinner with

Elephants” at the local zoo in Gianyar. The event started with a brief tour of the zoo, in which my husband eagerly interacted with several animals including deer, wallabies and a coffee-bean-pooping, cat-like Asian palm civet (which promptly bit him). Then came my favorite part of the show. We waited to see two orangutans who sat, arms crossed, on a wooden rack. Their handler confirmed that they were in a sour

mood. We were instructed not to touch the orangutans, presumably so that they could sort out their marital problems. Their vinegary expressions were as cute as they were relatable. My husband accused me of anthropomorphizing animals, but that only made me wonder if the orangutans began their argument over such silly accusations. By the time we walked past the orangutans, it was already evening, and dinner had redstarhangzhou.com

29

/ TRAVEL // 广告 • 旅游

already begun. As we dined on our buffet meal, a row of six elephants (each led by a handler), stood next to our restaurant to accompany us. Guests were free to feed and hug the mild-tempered and cooperative elephants, and take pictures with them. That was undoubtedly my favorite event of the day, significantly improved by the terrific food offered in the buffet. Speaking of food, it is heavily recommended that visitors try the barbecue served with sauce that Indonesians refer to as satey. We particularly enjoyed the chicken as well as the beef satey. The grounded fish satey, which seemed to be the most popular with locals, has a yellowish texture and an exotic taste that neither my husband nor I were able to describe or appreciate.

30

redstarhangzhou.com

But do try it for the experience. The taste has since became heavily associated with Bali for us due to its sheer uniqueness. Most central to our whole experience in Bali was our days spent in idle, soaking in the pool, sitting in the hotel room balcony, basking in the sun with a drink in hand, as well as walking alongside the beach. Bali’s sensual beauty and climate has always been intricately linked to its culture. The Balinese people see their relationship with nature as a nurturing one, to their bodies as well as their spirituality. The same applies to tourists as well. So while we prefer adventure in some of our trips, this time in Bali we opted for leisure. Whichever it is that you seek, know that Bali would never disappoint.

TIPS FOR TOURISTS • Use Uber. • Do NOT drink tap water! • Alcohol in Bali can be expensive. • Try the Tirta Empul Water Temple. I went there when I was little and it was fantastic! • There’s not much good souvenir to buy in Bali, except for perhaps woodwork • You can purchase Kopi Luwak, or coffee collected from Asian palm civet poop…if that is more up your alley.

AR: The Future of Education? Psychology in Language Learning Healthy Workplaces: What You Need To Know

AR: THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION?

By Inna Armstrong VP of Strategic Development, CleverBooks Ltd.

" If we do not change the way we teach, thirty years from now we will be in trouble." - Jack Ma 马云

J

ack Ma’s warning is not one that we should take lightly. Despite huge changes in the way we go about our daily lives, conduct business, manage our money and send information, education is one area relatively unaffected by the developments in technology that have come over the last few decades.

to smart phones, laptops, tablets and the like while growing up is now a common norm and gaining popularity over traditional toys such as action figures, toy cars and stuffed animals. But it makes perfect sense – why use your imagination unnecessarily, when you can see anything your heart desires on a smart phone screen?

AR(augmented reality) and VR(virtual reality) are very much the technologies of now, and have already been in development for a numbers of years, to the extent that is becoming ready for use by the masses. Education is a field in which these types of ‘new’ tech could and should be taken advantage of, and perhaps provide an impetus to a field which hasn’t advanced much in terms of methodology or application in a long time.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE, NOW

Better still, the tech savvy children of today already know how to use it – that is to say they are fluent in the language of gadgets and gizmos. Having access

This year the World Economic Forum presented a list of the top skills would be required for the majority of jobs 10 years from now: problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity. It highlighted these skills as essential for securing a job in an era of automated processes, smart AI and a society in which more and more jobs are becoming unnecessary for human workers. These are skills that ought to be nurtured from a young age and remain an intricate part of learning through childhood and beyond.

HANGZHOU FAMILY AR and VR could be the answer to this problem. The challenge faced is how to make the technology work best – how can we maximize use of these technologies while increasing student input and reaching teaching goals. The technology would also need to be widely applicable to a range of students of different levels and compliment its human teaching counterpart to cover tasks which a human teacher needn’t (or couldn’t).

AR IN THE CLASSROOM Learning and AR could become synonymous in the future. Forget boring lecture-style class rooms with ancient chalkboards and out-of-date textbooks and imagine an interactive learning experience where students can visualize a topic or theory and interact with it as they wish. AR, in various ways, could grant students extra digital information about any subject, or even make complex information easier to understand. Nowadays we can find excellent examples of augmented reality already being piloted in education classrooms worldwide. Ability to connect reality and digital content has been steadily improving, which in turn opens more options for teachers and students and opportunity for leaning.

HANGZHOU FAMILY

WHAT IS AR? An enhanced version of reality created by the use of technology to overlay digital information on an image of something being viewed through a device (such as a smartphone camera)

Current applications for AR learning are: 1) Augmented Reality Classroom Adding extra data (Augmented) over class material (Reality) to encourage student interest and understanding of a topic Imagine: An animated picture in a textbook 2) Explaining Difficult Concepts AR has the ability to create a visual representation of concepts and theories that are hard to imagine, making it easier for students to understand these more difficult concepts Imagine: A 3D model of a difficult physics theory 3) Student Interaction Students can interact with the real world environment in new and exciting ways, including 3-dimensional models that students can engage with Imagine: An AR image of inside the human body for closer inspection 4) In Learning Spaces Attractions and exhibits in museums and other education spaces could use AR for additional information and supply information for further study Imagine: A brief introduction of breed of dinosaur appearing when you look at it 5) Model Objects Design a desk, then place the AR version in your room to see what it would look like, or project the human

anatomy onto a model for deeper explanation and study Imagine: See how your desk would look before you begin building 6) Training Through interaction, unlike VR, AR features could help perform a virtual practice – with augmented tutorials, digital modeling, and simulations, and acquire some experience in the end Imagine: A medical student practicing performing an appendectomy on a cadaver

INVEST TO EVOLVE Imagine an art class where Van Gogh himself, not the teacher, is explaining to students the process behind his most famous works, which cover the classroom walls as you listen. Or perhaps overseeing some of Alexander’s greatest victories from a birds-eye perspective – the applications are endless. AR today may only come in the form of games (Pokémon Go) and apps that promise convenience and functionality, but usually end up a novelty at best (IOS Measure). AR presents us with the opportunity to revolutionize, and almost definitely improve the way the we teach and learn. It will be costly a transition, and big changes would be required to how we as species approach teaching, but one that will pave the wave for the future of learning. The students are ready. Are we?

Which means…: Pointing your smart phone at a coffee table and a computer-generated vase appearing on the screen – the vase is not actually there, merely projected onto the real world environment using the image captured from the camera.

AR IN CHINA Augmented reality is the technology of the future – and China knows it. While Virtual Reality technologies might eventually be won by America, the field of AR is a field China is expected to dominate long term, with applications in E-Commerce perhaps most lucrative: see what a new watch looks like on your wrist before buying it, or if a sofa would match the colour scheme of your living room. Companies including Tencent have already begun looking into AR advertising as augmented adverts perhaps becoming the next way to market brands and products. redstarhangzhou.com

What is the role that psychology plays in language learning? By Adina 邹夊瞎 Environmental Psychologist

Hello again! I noticed many people recently struggling with foreign language learning, regardless of the nationality or language they are trying to learn. When people hear me speaking in Chinese, I usually get something like: "Wow, your Chinese is great! You must have studied for a very long time!". Once they hear I passed HSK 5 in only 3 years of learning Chinese, their immediate conclusion is that I have a talent for learning languages, excluding any other possibility.

But what is actually going on here? Is learning foreign languages really only about talent?

up believing that they lack the ability/ talent to learn languages, give up on learning, or show slow progress.

In this article I will share another environmental psychology concept: contextual learning. This is the influence of our physical context, emotions and state of mind on our ability to recall the information that we learn. When the places in which we learn and the methods employed have more meaning to us, we are better able to recall the information. In other words, the environment plays a crucial role in our ability/inability to learn, hence it is important to understand this influence and how to use it to our advantage.

But let's use the "contextual learning" lens to analyze my "talent" to learn foreign languages.

For example, memorizing lists of words out of context is a waste of effort and potential, as they are meaningless and soon forgotten. However, many employ this method, thus soon end

As a child, I would spend a lot of time home alone watching cartoons on TV, as my parents were working long hours and had nobody else to take care of me. Back then, I never really paid attention to the language of the cartoons, up to one day when I realized the language was Italian and I had gotten to understand it. As I grew older, I switched to SouthAmerican soap-operas and American movies and after a while, I realized that the story had repeated itself. As a result, by the age of 16, I was already able to fully understand three foreign languages: Spanish, Italian and English,

without even leaving the country. Once I started working in Romania-based multinational companies, I found myself in an international environment that allowed me to also speak all these languages. Coming to China for a job that didn't require Chinese skills, I had no intention of learning the language. What's more, I resented Chinese language, simply because I didn't understand it. I even got to ask myself if Chinese people's brains were different than the rest of us for being able to process such a language (I am not kidding!). To have an idea of how bad it was, I couldn't even hear the pause between words, it was all one continuous sound. Once, a workmate tried to explain the four tones and I remember thinking he must be making fun of me, as it sounded all the same. I just couldn't get it!

HANGZHOU FAMILY However, having previous language learning experience, I asked myself: "What if...?". What if I would listen repeatedly and wake up one day fluent in Chinese? Out of curiosity to test my theory, I started listening to Chinese language every time I had the chance (movies, radio, eavesdropping on others' conversation etc) for almost one year. With street signs everywhere, the urban space became my classroom, also learning to read characters as I rode the bus or walked on the street. I didn't make too much of it, until I moved to the UK for my MSc Environmental Psychology studies, where for the first time I officially took Chinese classes and the Chinese teacher first apologized they don't have a higher level of classes to provide for such an advanced level as mine. Blown away by such a statement, I started self-analyzing and observing others in comparison ever since, to understand what happened. That's when I realized that I had involuntarily recreated the mother language acquisition process. As children, we were surrounded by language, with no option to block it out, since we didn't really know what "I don't understand!" means. We started making sense of this world by listening.

However, as adults, many think that there is no point to listen if they don't understand everything others say, thus choose to block anything unfamiliar. Many limit themselves to classroom time and ignore any other learning opportunities available outside of it. They focus too much on the language itself and not on what the language represents: a way of thinking, a tool for communication. As proof, I also studied German for 6 years as part of mandatory curricula in secondary school. Assuming that "talent" for languages is what got me here, then why is my German still at beginner level? The point is that no matter what language one is trying to learn, the acquisition process is the same, so it's not the language itself that is difficult to learn. The difficult part is to accept the psychological changes that are associated with language learning. The good news is that by understanding how contextual learning works, language learning becomes a lot easier. Through this article, I am not trying to dismiss the idea of talent, I am merely saying that we need to understand the psychology behind language learning and how to create a proper

environment that can allow us to discover what talents we really have. I mean, how can I know that I have talent to play a musical instrument, if I never even came close to one in my life? How can I know if I have good vocal cords, if I saw myself as a shy person for a long time and didn't even dare to try? And yes, now taking singing lessons is on my to do list. In conclusion, it is crucial to start taking into consideration the part that psychology plays in language learning because beyond going to classes, language learning also implies: ••

•• ••

••

Creating a language learning environment outside the classroom Willingness to change one's mindset Getting out of comfort zones and questioning everything one has learned before Understanding that the brain can be educated to like things that we thought we didn't, if we are exposed to them long enough.

Of course, there is much more to say about the topic, but for space considerations, I will not go further.

The Importance of a healthy workplace:

What you need to know

By Adina 邱天美 Environmental Psychologist

Hi guys! Hope you enjoyed the National Holiday. After trying to understand in previous articles what environmental psychology (EP) is and how the home and school environments influence us, in this article we will take a deeper look into the work environment, more specifically, we will discover what healthy workplaces are. Regardless of nationality, we spend most of our time at work and that can affect us in many ways, starting from our health condition, our levels of productivity, all the way to how we interact with others.

So what does a healthy workplace actually look like? In order to answer this question, we first need to understand some of the factors involved in designing a healthy workplace: space layout, furniture, light, noise, construction materials. Let's look at these factors one by one. Space Layout In order to encourage movement and collaboration, the space layout in an office should be flexible, which means

42

being able to easily switch between different work modes, either in teams or alone. For example, the workplace, among others, should: • be a mix of fixed and fluid architectural elements (e.g. semipermanent walls and movable partitions) • be a flexible hub for large and small group activities • allow users to configure the space by themselves with mobile furniture • provide for abundant natural lighting

and views • include natural elements (e.g. plants) and materials (e.g. wood) throughout the space • provide settings that are casual, informal, and comfortable • provide group areas for informal brainstorming and informal information swaps • provide for vertical content displays with whiteboards, projection surfaces, etc., that allow users to actively engage with information Such a spatial layout does not only provide for a healthy workplace, but it also fosters innovation, creativity and collaboration at the workplace, all of which create a company culture encouraging health, safety and well-

HANGZHOU FAMILY being with numerous benefits for its employees. Furniture The most important aspect when it comes to furniture is the posture that it allows. Most of the time, we perform tasks while seated, so it is important to have a healthy sitting posture, which is mostly determined by the chairs that we sit in. Experts in the field say that a healthy seated posture: • Supports an angle of 100º or more between the hips and spine • Maintains the spine’s natural S-shape • Supports the head centered on the neck, not leaning forward • Puts no pressure on internal organs • Helps maintain healthy blood flow in the body

may contribute to a more productive workforce too. Glare, reflections and shadows from the lighting also contribute to developing a poor posture in order to avoid them, or cause eye strain and headaches. Installing adjustable blinds on windows, and arranging workstations to reduce the effect of shadows, glare, and radiant heat from outside the building will help us avoid health problems. Noise Excessive noise levels over time irreversibly damage hearing. Constant noise can also affect concentration, and cause headaches, tiredness, irritability and high blood pressure, all of these increasing the chances of miscommunication between workers, which may affect productivity and safety on the long-term. Temperature, humidity & air quality You may have heard of the ‘sick building syndrome’ where a key factor is indoor air quality, which encompasses factors such as: • temperature and humidity • levels of gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and ozone • presence of contaminants such as volatile organic compounds or mould

Light The lighting in an office should have enough brightness for us to go about our tasks while being able to avoid eye strain and headaches. Light plays a part in setting our sleep–wake cycle, so sunlight, which has a lot of short wavelength blue light, keeps us awake and alert. However, the fluorescent lighting common in many workplaces actually contains less blue spectrum light than sunlight, so to help improve alertness and concentration, more natural light is needed into the building. However, switching to broadspectrum white LED lighting that skews toward blue spectrum wavelengths

Research shows that the symptoms of ill-health people associated with buildings are often connected to dampness, cleanliness and building ventilation, so it is very important to stay alert to these factors in order to make sure that we don't expose ourselves to health risks. Construction Materials An emerging concern in this area is whether a certain material contains toxins – chemicals that are harmful to human health at relatively low doses. Toxins may be carcinogenic, or otherwise impact the health of the respiratory, neurological, endocrine or other systems of the human body. Consider a typical office space: paint on the wall may emit volatile organic

compounds (VOCs); flooring may contain phthalates; and furniture is often coated in flame retardant. Numerous studies have demonstrated that reducing exposure to toxins has real, measurable health benefits, and as a result, the healthcare system is alleviated. Measures such as eliminating formaldehyde has shown potential to reduce asthma symptoms by over half, deemed much more cost effective than clinical treatment of illness. Although I have talked about the above factors one by one, you may have noticed that they are heavily interconnected and strongly influence the overall working environment, not to mention your medical bill and your relationship with your workmates. What can you do to stay healthy at work even if your office doesn't follow the above design guidelines? Well, you could try some of the below tips: • Take stretching breaks. Simple, quick stretches can help ‘wake up’ muscles and prevent them getting tight through lack of movement. • Encourage physical activity. Suitable physical activity can help decrease pain, improve function, and reduce the chances of low back pain. • Encourage ’walking meetings’ where possible Can you think of other tips to stay healthy at the workplace? Or maybe you can come up with some ideas to turn your own office into a healthier workplace? Do you feel like time has taken on a new dimension since you became a parent? You are not alone! Cat Kung provides top tips for managing your time and help you with the juggling act that is parenting.

Where did my day go?!

Time Management Tips for Busy Parents Employ Technology There is a lot to keep track of when you have kids. Technology can help! A few years ago my husband and I started using Google Calendar, to get all our appointments, events and trips on the same page. Now there are tons of apps to help you with time management (like Cozi and HatchedIt), task-managing (TeuxDeux, Evernote, Wonderlist), meal planning (Big Oven), and making shopping lists. Plan Out Your Day “It’s not about having time – it’s

44

redstarhangzhou.com

about making time.” When I was in college I was good at managing my time. I had goals and priorities, was focused and productive. Now, as a parent, I feel like I am floundering and often waste a lot of time. One thing I did in college was write down hour-by-hour what I did each day. This might seem excessive, but it helped me assess exactly what I was doing with my time. I recently started doing it again, and realised I had pockets of time that I wasn’t using effectively. I noticed between

8-8:30 a.m. I never did much. Now I use those thirty minutes to exercise and it gets my day off to a great start! Make Use of Small Time Chunks The more I looked at my hour-byhour calendar the more I noticed little bits of time that were not enough time for anything substantial but that could be used for small 10-15 minute tasks. The trick is to have a list of tasks ready for these small chunks of “in-between” waiting times! Make a phone call. Do some self-care. Write a card. Make a list. Work on budgeting.

Clean a toilet. Go through a drawer. Set Timers We use egg timers at my home to keep us on track. My clever friend, Christa Carr, shared an even better idea with me. “I set timers on my phone with different sounds. My kids know what each sound means and they do different tasks when they hear different alarms. In the morning before school, piano rift = get dressed; motorcycle = brush teeth; bouncy = put shoes, coats, backpacks on.” Pause Before Saying “Yes” One of the most important things I have learned about time management is: “When you say ‘yes’ to one thing, you are saying ‘no’ to something else.” Beyond the basic things you must do, reserve your energy for things that make you feel happy and excited. No excuses necessary. Simply respond to

invitations with “Thank you for asking/ inviting us, but we can’t make it.” The Night Before My organised friend, Jaimi Lin, says that preparing the night before can save a lot of time. She suggests you lay out clothes, pack your bag, prepare lunch/dinner, look at your calendar, etc. before you go to sleep at night. You know what? It works!! Assess Your Expectations I am a list maker! The past year I noticed I would write down a long list of things to do and then I was disappointed that I did not get everything done. I have tried to shift my mentality and let a lot of things go. Make lists, but be realistic about what you can accomplish in a day with kids and living abroad. Schedule Serendipity Space

Christine Koh and Asha Dornfest, authors of Minimalist Parenting, recommend putting “Serendipitous Space” into your schedule. Kids need periods of quiet time when there is nothing to do and nowhere to go, for exploring, playing make believe, enjoying nature, cuddling and being creative. Savour these moments! Technology can help us get organised, but it also can be distracting. Every once in a while, turn off all your devices and be fully present with your children. Find Balance Don’t forget that you need time to recharge. If you are exhausted, then it’s hard to laugh, it’s hard to be patient, it’s hard to make healthy choices, and it’s hard to think. An important result that comes from organising my time is that I am able to simplify, destress, and balance everything better. redstarhangzhou.com

Tested and Trusted Strategies for Teaching LARGE Classes. Teaching a class with over 20 students can be daunting as well as energy-sapping. However, with the correct strategies, it can be rewarding and provided the topic is engaging and stimulating, students will hardly ever get bored listening to the teacher and interacting with peers. Here are the strategies I have used. I can guarantee you they worked just fine. You will need teaching assistants to help maintain orderliness though. rganise the groups to 1. O suit students’ abilities: • Mixed-ability groups: The more able learners in the group can help the others to master the work so that the teacher need not teach some parts. • Same-ability groups: leave the

groups of faster learners to get on with the work on their own. Give extra help to individual learners in the slower groups.

• Use group leaders/monitors:

appoint faster, more able learners as group leaders or monitors who can help slower learners.

mploy seating arrangements that 2. E promote interacting and mingling, and allow teachers / assistants to move around the class easily. onitor the groups yourself. 3. M You will need to move around the classroom to see what progress learners are making and what problems are coming
