PUBLISHER’S NOTE

All good things come to those who wait. We, Vizagites, have been adequately rewarded for our patience and perseverance. The first international flight to Dubai took off as per schedule on March 25, thanks to the relentless efforts of Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Mrs.D.Purandeswari and Rajya Sabha member, Dr.T. Subbarami Reddy. Chief Minister, Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who flagged off the inaugural flight said, “All that is special about Visakhapatnam should be highlighted properly and a brand image should be built.” Yes, there is no limit to our growth if we can offer a package of our reinforced civil aviation, tourism and hospitality sectors. As a publisher, I consider myself lucky that I am not only a part of this makeover but also able to chronicle the progress. We may soon get connected to Singapore too with Tiger Airways of Singapore evincing keen interest in operating a direct flight from here. Air passengers travelling from the city to other international destinations couldn’t have asked for a better deal. Close on the heels is yet another celebration. The city, hosting DLF IPL matches for the first time, is all set to unroll a red carpet for sports celebrities. I am especially proud of this issue because it features my mentor, Mr. Naga Prasad, Chairman, People Combine. I owe him all those most unforgettable days, spent in his mighty institution of learning. While I relive those college days of fret, fun and frolic, I must mention here that we are seriously mulling on the student partnership ventures. To our delight students from various corners of the region are responding positively to our overtures. This also brings to my mind that this is the most crucial season for students who are on the threshold of their careers, with the jobs beckoning them at campus interviews. I wish them all the best.

E D I T O R ’ S S AY

To spice it or not spice it - that was the question. The April issue turned out to be a tricky affair that caught me on the horns of dilemma. With the last two issues having sizzling hot chicks on the cover which made you skip a beat, my natural temptation is to follow them up with yet another blazing babe. But my better mind warned me that it would only push up the already soaring mercury. What would one want on these sweltering days? Not hot coffee, but a chilled drink! That’ it! The cool guy Nani popped up on our cover. The trailer of his upcoming flick Eega has created a sensation in all the social networking sites, aptly termed yeto vellipoyindi manasu. The former RJ talked non-stop with red. Check out. Save water - is a commonly unsolicited advice that floats around in all circles. Every drop counts and what are we doing to save it? For a change, red alert does not warn you but guides you with solid steps to save the precious fluid. Anyone can try them out. Keep some life’s elixir for future generations!!! Today all of us are keyed up to work like machines, chasing our dreams, forgetting the importance of unwinding. We present three Vizag - lovers who are offering excellent getaways to relax. They have ‘resort’ed to hospitality to fill some gaps that are holding the city from shining as a good tourist destination. Forewarned is forearmed. I wanted to prepare you for the upcoming season. Hence the focus is on lush gardens to green salads. red tips talk of ‘dos and don’ts’ that go with workouts. Get, set and go!!!! Happy New Year!!! Yes, yes, of course, I know and remember that Ugadi is just gone. But it’s New Year time in neighbouring Nepal (April 13). It is also time to pack your bags and go to explore its breathtaking landscapes, serene shrines, not to forget the adventure. Tuck this issue in your backpack and give the Nepali tourist guides a go-by. Wish you a cool holiday.

RED WAS THE

COLOUR AT

GUSAC

CARNIVAL Our magazine sponsored the three-round Essay contest at the recently held GITAM’s GUSAC Carnival, a two-day fun packed event in which all the academic streams of the University took part. M. Amrutha (4th year Biotech) won the contest for which the topic was “Red ain’t a colour, it’s an attitude.”Here we present her views.

Leaders are not manufactured products of a factory. They are born from crisis. When anarchy rises or society is filled with blasé, there will always be that one person who stands out with Red. The source of inspiration will be his life, the place of recreation will his mind and the cause of revolution will be his movement. red magazine is one such leader.

Guess what the famous Real Madrid football star Beckam once said. He said, “I attribute my success in kicking the last goal just in time to the colour of our team’s uniform - Red”

To speak the truth, in the city of destiny, it is the red magazine that stands out with its good attitude. red, as its name suggests, is filled with most vibrant and joyous pages from weddings to pubbings, from mom-preneurs to the city’s chef. The way the magazine presents its alternative perspective is truly a hot topic of discussion with the youth. I sum up by saying -

That was quite an amusing answer for someone like Beckam, to give to the public. Yes, it didn’t seem comprehensible in the beginning, but that was exactly when people gave some thought to it. The fact that a colour could influence the mood of a person was brought in to light. Many successful people from all around the world nodded heads in harmony that red was their favourite colour. People who like red are the attractive lot of a peer. The ones filled with enthusiasm, the desire to achieve new heights, to unfold the mysteries, decode a problem and most essentially the passion to view things in an alternative perspective. It was not just the apple bump on his head that Newton wondered about, but it was the shiny “red” apple that attracted his thought towards itself. red | april 2012 | 12

“Red travels the farthest, and stands alone as the best!”

RED

stands for revolution stands for quest stands for ambition

leaving beyond the rest!”

red | april 2012 | 14

April 4 Tell A Lie Day Here are a few tips to catch liars around you. They avoid making eye contact. They touch or scratch their nose, throat or mouth. Their eyes dart back and forth rapidly and they sweat profusely.

April 5 Bell Bottoms Day The sailor’s bell-bottom trousers came to epitomise 60’s and 70’s fashion. The wide, flared legs are easy to roll up when swabbing a deck or wading through flooded spaces. Rummage your father’s closet, maybe there is still a pair or two left.

Good Friday Well the first Good Friday was on April 7 A.D. 30. Good also means holy. What’s more: Post-It Notes Birthday 1980: Now they have evolved to stickies, the desktop notes that remind one of important things to do. Once on computer screens, stickies remain where they are placed until closed, even through reboots.

April 7 World Health Day On this day let us join to combat issues like air pollution and sanitation that are plaguing our lives. We Vizagites surely deserve cleaner air. A new job, perhaps? Or a fancy college degree? Maybe, a date with that cute co-worker or classmate. Whatever the challenge just give it a try.

April 15 Leonardo Da Vinci's Birthday Leonardo Da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, mathematician, inventor, cartographer, scientist, musician, philosopher and above all, an influential and intellectual human being. This makes us question “what in the world have I been doing till now?”

April 16 Stress Awareness Day It started with the New Year’s resolution let down, then came the Valentine's Day romantic pressures, then the end of winter discontent and finally, tax season. You know, that stress? Just wanted to make sure you were aware of it. Carry on.

April 21 Kindergarten Day The first Kindergarten was founded by Friedrich Froebel in Germany in 1837. The programme was devised to make transition from home to school easy for the young children. The day is for a story, nap and a snack.

April 22

April 23 Take a Chance Day It’s better to regret something you did than something you didn’t do. So if you’ve been holding back, seize the day and do something daring. Wear mismatched sock or sport a Mohawk or choose bandages instead of drab work clothes. What’s more: William Shakespeare’s Birthday (1564). April 18 Garlic Day Who cares if it makes the breath stink? The spicy garlic protects us from heart diseases, the common cold, and vampires.

Earth Day All the year long you walk all over the earth. You also drive, bike, and play on it. You surf in earth’s oceans, chill out in the shade of its trees, ski down its snowy slopes. So on this day, do something nice for the planet that offers you so much. What’s more: Writer Vladimir Nobokov’s birthday. His Lolita was the best-known and most controversial classic of the 20th century. The name Lolita has entered pop culture to describe a sexually precocious girl.

What’s more: Ancestor Appreciation Day: Genealogy is the fastest growing hobby nowadays, figuring out your family tree can be fun and may lead to some interesting revelations.

April 28 Kiss Your Mate Day Studies have suggested that regularly kissing your mate decreases stress, increases relationship satisfaction and reduces cholesterol levels. So pucker up, kiss!

April 29 Zipper Day Patented in 1913, zips are simpler than buttons and more reliable than velcro. The zipper is the fastest clothing and luggage fastener in the world. American actress and model Uma Karuna Thurman’s birthday: Among her bestknown roles are those in Pulp Fiction (for which she received an Academy Award nomination) and Kill Bill.

April 30 Hairstyle Appreciation Day Imagine how dull the world would be if we all had standard haircuts. Hairstyles are a way we express ourselves with colours, cuts, curls, waves, braids, spikes and streaks. So if you spot a killer hairdo today, share a wink.

GLAMOUR QUOTIENT

Actor quartet makes hulchul Looks like actors ‘invaded’ Vizag in a big way, with four actors from Tollywood creating hulchul. Rana witnessed the trailor of a song from his film Naa Ishtam at a local hotel. The other actors who made buzz at a private function were Sneha Ullal and Aksha. Aksha enthralled the audience with her dances.

Tam at AU The Andhra University campus was abuzz with students as well as outsiders. They were there to have a glimpse of Milk White Beauty Tamanna who was shooting for Sravanti Movies’ latest film Endukante Premanta. The actor along with some junior artistes shot near the Registrar’s office and at the department of physics.

The buxom beauty was spotted at a programme to celebrate the third anniversary of Kolors, Slim and Beauty Clinic. It seems she has retained her glamour though she had shed 20 kg after undergoing treatment at the Kolor’s Chennai branch. All you fitness freaks will you ape her?

All the Best A fight between two men at the airport took the passerby by surprise. You are wrong if you took the incident for real. It was the shoot of Telugu film All the Best in which fight sequences between actors Srikanth and J D Chakravathy were picturised. The location changed to Four Points Sheraton. While choreographer Amma Rajashekhar was busy giving instructions to the ‘item’ girl under the scrutinizing eye of the actor-director J D Chakravarthy. Waves turned a fitting platform for the song.

Waves REVIEW

H

ow about witnessing crashing waves not on the shore but on the 6th floor of a luxurious property? Impossible is nothing! With city’s top star hotel Four Points by Sheraton launching its posh lounge barWaves, Vizagites can now experience this ecstasy. This pub is the most spacious among the existing ones in the city and custom made for all classes of party freaks. The quiet ones also can lay back and booze on those comfy sofas and lounge chairs. The huge dance floor is open for the wilder lots to dance till dawn. Interesting lighting in varied hues and patterns and high voltage music by brilliant DJ Puneet from Mayanagari Mumbai, are the additional spirit-lifters. If you are tired watching those revellers inside, you can stare at the night sky through those transparent glass panes and explore the poet within. Need to get high? Chief bartender Suresh is there to guide you through the best poison for you. Among all, the must- try are Making Waves, Holy Waves, Shock Waves (Shooter) or Suresh’s signature creation Fountain Shots, presented with burning flames. Mouth-watering starters are there to accompany your drinks. Smokers need not look for some dark abandoned corner, as it has a dedicated smoking zone for them.

KANTIPUDI NISSAN

W

orld class automobile manufacturer, Nissan is in town! Kantipudi automobiles, the sole dealer of Nissan has begun its operations last month and with a staff of 40 and customers almost touching a whopping 200, it is surely going great guns. Kantipudi Nissan located at Sheelanagar is perhaps the only widest car showroom in Vizag. The workshop is located at the Industrial area and the technology used for the maintenance of the cars is quite unique. For the first time ever, robotic arms are being used for welding purposes and no other company has pioneered the use of such path breaking equipment. Though the showroom hasn’t been officially inaugurated due to unknown reasons, the cars seem to be selling like hot cakes. Nissan’s car Sunny, a posh SUV Xtrail, the sweet Micra and suave Teana are the only ones available for customers now. But in the next couple of months, new models of petrol and diesel variants would hit the market. There’s a separate section for car accessories like seat covers, sun shades and lights. The well-trained staff has answers for all your questions on the Nissan cars. Quite impressive!

The ambience and the welcoming staff are just fantastic.

3.5 The remote location.

I

f you wish to treat yourself to some delicious Chinese and North Indian food, then look no further! Singh’s Flavours and Spices, a café and a garden restaurant inside the HPCL Millennium Petrol Bunk at Siripuram Junction is the right place to either have a quick bite or to celebrate a special occasion. The rather long menu makes the choosing very tough. Starting from simple rotis, kulchas, parathas to a variety of pizzas, sandwiches and burgers, you name it, they have it. The chefs at the food court can churn out almost 30 varieties of parathas and they plan to increase the number to 101. A special counter for chaat, panipuri and samosa is setup only during the evening to provide that small snack to the home bound hungry tummies. While you fill your vehicles at the bunk, treat yourself to a hodgepodge of coffees, teas, milkshakes, sundaes and mock tails.

SINGH’S FLAVOURS AND SPICES

Take back your money if the beverages aren’t delivered in nine minutes. The ambience of the sit-out area is inviting and you wouldn’t mind spending hours there. Takeaway facilities are available.

Impeccably neat kitchen and serving areas. Unique menu.

3 The petrol smell might put you off. Must improve the timing of the service.

It is a branch of the good old Grand Bawarchi in Hyderabad that is known for its lip-smacking dishes. The list of biryanis and kebabs it serves is just endless. The master chefs at Bawarchi specialize in Arabian Kebab, Pathar ka gosh, grilled chicken and chicken biryani. Grand Bawarchi also has space to relax and revive.

The array of travel services they offer is splendid.

3 Cost of the packages is slightly on a higher side.

HOTEL MEGHANA PARK

The hotel boasts of smartly designed and well-kept rooms besides the executive rooms and suites. Needless to say, the laundry service, valet car parking and the travel desk work round the clock. On the first floor, the golden and silver dining halls are huge enough to house 200 people and are best suited for social gatherings of any kind. If you want to unwind with a steaming cup of coffee, then head straight to the 5th floor.

Impressive menu. Prompt service.

3.5 Need to scale up hygiene in the dining halls. The busy location might be disturbing.

olourless, odourless, formless, yet it is the elixir of life. Water is a priceless gift of nature, but today it is scarce. Nearly one billion people in the developing world don’t have access to safe drinking water. One needn’t go too far. The crisis is looming large on our own city. We are not yet into the summer, already the alarm bells have started ringing, drawing the city’s attention to the depleting underground water levels. Instead of passing the buck to each other, we can adopt a few waterconserving techniques and some guarded habits at home that can bring about a sea change. T

Ranita Ray talks to three women of substance who take those regular, albeit small steps.

Kitchen

In and around the house

Ÿ Kitchen accounts for around 8 %

Ÿ Water used for washing clothes

of daily water usage. A running kitchen tap can lose around 9 litres of water a minute if not closed. Ÿ Don’t discard the water used for

washing rice, pulses and vegetables. Use it for plants. Ÿ Wash fruits and vegetables in

a pan of water, not under a tap. Ÿ Prefer pressure cooker to open

vessel. “There's nothing like listening to a shower and thinking how it is soaking in around your green beans, said a green enthusiast. I more than agree with him,” says Mrs. P. Krishna Kumari, who manages to keep her 2-acre garden green even in harsh summer.

Ÿ Even for making tea or coffee,

don’t overfill the kettle or milk pan. Ÿ If you are washing the dishes by

hand, fill the sink or a large container. Rinse only when all the dishes are soaped and scrubbed. Use low foam detergent. Ÿ Contrary to the popular belief, an

efficient dishwasher uses much less water compared to washing by hand, provided you wash only full loads and don’t rinse dishes before loading. Ÿ Stop thawing frozen food in

“We use thee O Water, So that thou makes us happy, By curing our diseases, Thou rejuvenatest our potent energy,” quoting from Sama Veda, educationist Mrs. M. Valli Ramgopal reiterates that, water, the nature’s gift to life should be treated with utmost care and respect.

running water. Remove them beforehand or defrost in microwave. It ensures water efficiency and food safety. Saves approx 200 to 600 litres a month.

can be reused to mop the floor. Ÿ Have an evaporative air

conditioner? Keep a bucket under the drain line to collect the water which can be used for plants or cleaning the floor. Alternatively you can direct it to flower beds, tree base or lawn. Ÿ To minimise evaporation, water

the lawn or garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are low. Ÿ If you have a garden-pond or

fountain, ensure that it is equipped with a re-circulating pump. Covering the swimming pool when not in use, checks evaporation. Ÿ Wash vehicles or bathe pets near

the garden. Your plants are simultaneously watered. Ÿ Try to group plants together based

on similar water needs. Ÿ Sprinkle coconut fibre dust around

plants near their roots. This way, moisture is retained for longer periods. Ÿ If you have space, make provision

to collect rain water. T

Ÿ Don’t throw the ice left in the glass.

Let the plants have a cool treat. Bathroom Ÿ As per a survey, bathrooms

account for around 75 % of the water used at home. Ÿ Keep a regular check on pipe

leakage. Ÿ Fix that dripping tap or you lose

90 litres a week. Ÿ Go for a low-flow showerhead

and save one litre per minute. Ÿ Fit a water saving device in your

cistern, save 3 litres per flush. “Little drops of water make the mighty ocean and I strongly believe a drop saved is a drop earned. Like charity, conserving this precious liquid should also begin at home. I am doing my bit, are you?” asks Mrs. M. Uma Sarma, a house engineer, who adopts many efficacious measures at home to arrest the drain. Here are some valuable suggestions put forth by them.

Ÿ Restrict yourself to short showers

than frequent lavish baths. This can secure the luxury of bathing for the gen-next. Ÿ Don’t let water pour down the

wash basin while brushing teeth, shaving or washing your face. Instead use a mug and save about 12 litres a day. Ÿ To wash clothes use the machine

on a full load. Running a half filled machine wastes both water and energy. Best is to go for a watersaving model.

glorious getaways T

he city of destiny might soon be changing its tagline, for the better. Our port city with its picturesque beaches has now become a spirited holiday resort. Successive governments failed to bring the laidback town on to the global tourism map. So what? Some ambitious realtors have accomplished it by tapping its potential. They also go a step ahead to add all the necessary works. Kalyani Rajashekar meets some pioneers in the field and finds out that one trait that threads through them is the love for Vizag. T

Luxury

redefined Shyam Bollina set out with a vision that took a concrete shape as SriSanthi Pleasant Village on a sprawling 24 acres of land in Savaravilli. The resort, part of this mega project is a perfect getaway. It is crafted in complete harmony with the breathtaking beauty of the nature. The delight of being at SriSanthi is buoyed by the view of the temple and cottages in their architectural splendour. The rich interiors highlight the resort’s theme, which is out and out ethnic! You would surely fall in love with the blissful calm of the village.

The first step It began in 2006 when I was on a family vacation to Europe and happened to see beautiful townships of Copenhagen. They were all well organised and well built. That made me think over the prospects of replicating such facilities on the home ground. I know we can’t match up to their standards, yet I wanted to give it a shot. After much deliberation, the first phase of SriSanthi got underway. Why the name SriSanthi? It’s a derivative. My father is Sri Hari Rao and my mother Santhi, hence, SriSanthi. Sui generis A standalone resort was never my idea. I always envisaged it amidst a township vibrant with people and activities. Sri Santhi now boasts of clean and isolated swimming pools, club house,

three function halls, cottages, restaurants and a party area. Our Balaji temple is nothing short of a mini Tirupati, accounting for 30,000 footfall each day during the Sravana Masam. Township Our main aim is to build good homes that people would be proud to own. In fact, in many cases where the owners cannot spare time for construction, we chip in. The Phase 2 is underway. Besides, we also are into apartment construction near Madhurawada. Rivals There are no competitors in our field as all of us have our own space. Each township is different and has its own USP. We are just making use of the opportunities the city offers. In fact, we are unable to meet the surplus demand. So we work hand-in-hand and never as rivals. Contribution to the tourism industry We thought we would only be a catalyst in boosting the region’s tourism. In the process we ourselves turned into a tourist attraction. Our surveys indicate that we are the most frequented of all the city’s resorts. red | april 2012 | 41

Spirit of

wellness Unique point My staff, trained at Mysore, comes with ample experience. The location too is another plus point. You can just walk across the road and stroll in the beach. The scenic drive to Bay Leaf along the azure ocean itself is a prelude to an aesthetic experience. Amidst swaying palms, a ranch style gate welcomes you to the first ayurveda spa of Vizag. The beautiful mix of cream cottages, blue swimming pool and lush green premises are a delight to watch. Away from the jostling city, the soothing resonance of the beach de-stresses the exhausted souls. Armed with a degree in hospitality, Sreenivas, the bossman of Bay Leaf, believes that every one of us has the right to relax, taking break from our hectic schedules.

red | april 2012 | 42

The beginning This place, originally called Annapurna Cottage (named after my grandmother) was used for boarding purpose. Owing to its remote location, there were not many takers for it. That was when my wife and I thought of setting up a spa. Then we realised that a standalone spa might not be such a good idea and went for a resort with a spa, swimming pool, rooms and a restaurant. Since it is an ayurvedic facility, we needed to take extra care to maintain tranquil ambience that soothes the taut nerves. We have an ayurvedic doctor to give necessary guidance. Why the name Bay Leaf? We didn’t want to be the run-of-the-mill. My wife felt that bay leaf, with its medicinal properties that control blood sugar, is perfect for this facility.

Rewards and recognition Though we haven’t received any awards, we are extremely happy with the way people are receiving us. Our business is growing in leaps and bounds. What’s next? Apart from renovating and expanding the present facility, there isn’t anything else on the cards. But I also want to revamp our Orange Hotel. Now that people are aware of the concept of budget hotels, this is the right time to strike! We are also trying to introduce coupons for Bay Leaf through online dealers. Challenges Touchwood, till now we have not faced any major challenges. This was a small facility hence easy to manage. Moreover, I aim at promoting the city’s tourism, not at making a mega buck.

Go

vizag! Green technology Though our country is not new to Green technology, the city is not familiar with it. We went an extra mile and installed solar panels and efficient ventilating systems. For a true foodie - Vihar is more than a restaurant. It’s an experience! Perched on the beach front hillock, it is the best suited for people looking for an ideal accommodation and dining. It is the vantage point to witness tranquil dawns and dusk, the starry and moonlit nights and turquoise waters. Seshagiri Mantri, Vihar’s man didn’t stop with that. Its latest attraction, Rain Tree spa, offers soul soothing and body pampering services. No wonder it is ranked as the best by Vizagites.

Why the name Vihar? It’s the abbreviation for Vinayagar Hotels & Resorts Pvt. Ltd. The first step Though my core business is construction, I have a special passion for restaurants. It all began when APTDC assigned us to develop Rushikonda and build a restaurant in a 2.5 acre land. The location was fabulous encouraging us to design a bar and restaurant. We have set up the spa in the surplus space available. Testing times Building a restaurant in this unfriendly hilly terrain was the most arduous task I faced. The second challenge was hiring and retaining the staff.

Strong suit The location was, is and will be our biggest asset! No other place in Vizag is located this close to the beach. Our spa is designed in such a way that every room overlooks the sea. Our cuisine is always in demand. We received the Best Restaurant in Andhra Pradesh award for the year 2008. What’s next? We are working on new tourist project Go Vizag, Goa of the East. This is to showcase the city in all its glory. Tourists from anywhere in the country can avail this package which will take care of them right from the word go. Our head office, to be located in Kolkata, will spread the word. This insulates tourists from fleecing self-proclaimed guides and transport agencies. You are in safe hands. red | april 2012 | 43

IPL HEAT ON THE RISE 9

teams, 76 matches, 54 days, billions of rupees, millions of fans, and one religion - cricket; DLF Indian Premiere League (IPL) is back with its fifth season. A pompous show in which 144 cricketers from 11 countries battle for the trophy, with all the accompanying trappings like celebrity presence and cheer girls’ glamour, the IPL 5 is going to be the biggest extravaganza for the National Cricket Board. Ranita Ray gives the fifth umpire’s view. The IPL 4 witnessed a high intensity drama starting from Lalit Modi’s resignation to India’s most successful captain Sourav Ganguly (Aka Dada) remaining unsold while a lot of new players were picked up. Thanks to King Khan. Dada has a reason to smile this year for securing a strong position in Pune Warriors as the team’s coach-cum-captain replacing the earlier Skipper Yuvraj Singh. However, it will be the swan song for Mr. ‘Wall’, ‘Dependable’ Rahul Dravid who has recently declared retirement. He will be captaining Rajasthan Royals replacing Shane Warne.

red | april 2012 | 44

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals are also on another high. Why not, when team owner Shilpa Shetty, who is expecting her first baby in May, is gearing up to cheer them? We wish her good luck and of course doctor’s permission! While Gautam Gambhir was the jackpot last year, Ravindra Jadeja wins the honours in Season 5 auction. With a base price of USD 100,000, Jadeja was bought for a whopping USD 2 million by Chennai Super Kings in a hotly contested battle with Deccan Chargers. The next in rank was Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene with USD 1.4 million.

The unsold big names include James Anderson, Ian Bell, Steven Smith, Peter Siddle, Ajantha, Ravi Rampaul, Kevin O’ Brien, middle-order veteran V.V.S. Laxman and medium pacer V.R.V. Singh. Kochi Tuskers Kerala is not part of IPL 2012 as it was terminated by the BCCI. The IPL 5 will commence on 4 April and finish on 27 May, 2012. Chennai will be hosting the inaugural and closing matches. The two finalists of IPL 4, Chennai and Bangalore will be hosting the event. The matches will be played at 12 venues (in home and away format).

Cover Shoot: Y S N Murthy Cover Story: Kalyani Rajashekar

NANI IN ALL FLY ZONE

ON THE SETS

Tell us how Eega buzzes The title itself is interesting and it gets all the more exciting when it comes to the title role. Rajamouli sir has worked really hard for the film and this will surely catapult Tollywood to a higher level. This Eega doesn’t look gigantic. Though small, he is a hero. The graphic work is just fabulous and has been carried out by Hollywood experts. A cute love story packed with emotional sequences, action and graphics is what Eega is all about. The film, entitled Naan Ee, will be simultaneously released in Tamil. Have you seen the final version? What is your gut feeling about it? None of us will disappoint you. We’ve put in a lot of efforts for this jumbo project. 90% of the credit goes to Rajamouli sir. I am really excited and proud that I am a part of it. Working experience with Rajamouli We all fondly call him Jakkanna (the legendary sculptor). He is a very different man on the sets and is uncompromising. Working with him is like going to school or college and a different experience altogether. Why is your nickname being used instead of Naveen Kumar? (Laughs) Though I am officially christened Naveen, everybody calls me Nani. Even in the industry, people know me only as Nani. May be that proved lucky and here I am!

A

fter dabbling in film direction, when he arrived with Ashta Chemma, people knew that this boy was here to stay. He also won the Filmfare Best Debut Male for the same film. True to his on-air name at World Space Radio, Nonstop Nani has not looked back. A string of films followed and each one of it was special. Critics branded him the Badshah of Tollywood because he was just living his role while setting the cash registers jingling. His work soon attracted the likes of Rajamouli and Gautam Menon and today he’s all set to join the big league. Meet the star, who’s not just an actor but is also pretty good at wielding the megaphone! H

A clap director to an assistant director to an RJ to a hero! How has the journey been? Just fantastic! I can’t ask for more. Though I was passionate about films, I never thought that I would grow to be a hero. It was a stroke of luck. But I must admit that I enjoyed every phase. As an assistant director I worked with directors like Bapu. That is again like attending a workshop. Being an RJ at World Space is a different experience all together. You sit in a room and talk to people without getting to know who they are. Now that I am a hero, I can reach to a wider section of audience. I am truly blessed!

red | april 2012 | 52

Ashta Chemma, Ride, Snehithuda, Bheemili Kabaddi Jattu, Ala Modalaindi, Pilla Jamindar, Sega and Eega! There’s a lot of variation in your roles. How do you manage that when people are usually typecasted? Maybe I should thank my directors for that. I usually try to balance my mass and class images. This juggling act helps me take up different films without having to think about my fans’ demands or my image. I don’t think I can survive the competition in ‘bashing up goons.’ Why do new directors choose you? Many debutants feel that I can easily get into the skin of any character. Their stories are really interesting and are not the run-of-the-mill commercials. Instead of doing one big film that can either be a hit or a flop, I rather go for many small films that may grow to be big hits. This actually makes sense to me! How different was the experience working with female directors Anjana (Sega) and Nandini (Ala Modalaindi)? Anjana and Nandini are my long time buddies. There is no way I could say no to them. In this male-dominated industry, working with women surely raised eyebrows but I am glad I took the right decision. These young ladies were much more organised and can multi-task very efficiently. What went wrong with Bheemili Kabaddi Jattu and Sega? They were just average grossers. Many people felt that the nativity factor went amiss in both these flicks. But they certainly brought me recognition. You are now a minimum guaranty hero who promises a decent collection. How is it being labelled thus? Doesn’t that sound great? At the end of the day, the producer should be a happy man. They are usually at a higher risk of going bankrupt if a film flops. If I can bring a decent collection at the box office, I think my job is done. The tag of a minimum guaranty hero is quite rewarding. Is competition tough? Tough but everybody has his own space. Most of them are my seniors and there’s a lot to learn from each of them. red | april 2012 | 53

NANI Are godfathers needed to shine? I don’t think so! This concept existed a decade ago. The industry needs people who are talented, passionate and committed. So your talent is your godfather. Most of your films are comedies, love stories and family dramas. Why not some action? (Laughs) Do you think my physique supports an action film? I need to be extraordinarily muscular to perform action sequences. Otherwise, it looks funny. As of now, I am happy with my comedies and love stories. If I build a six pack, I shall surely plan an action entertainer. What makes Nani accept a film? The role and its variation from other roles I played before are two criteria I set. The director, production house, female lead and music are secondary.

There were rumours that your success has gone to your head and now you throw attitude. How far is it true? People who are unable to digest my success seem to be spreading such rumours. My middle class upbringing has never taught me to throw attitude or belittle others. You have a grip on almost all the crafts of film making. What about singing and music? (Laughs) Nobody has asked me this! I love music but can never sing. I am not eligible even for the tag of a bathroom singer. Future projects Gautam Menon’s Yeto Vellipoindi Manasu is getting ready. I am reading new scripts but haven’t finalised anything yet.

If not an actor, what would you have been? I would have surely been a director, a la Mani Ratnam. Being a director yourself once, are you tempted to advise your directors? Precisely, for the same reason, I never correct them nor offer advices. I know how disturbing it is when people come up with suggestions. Are you single? Of course and also ready to mingle! Anybody’s interested? Whom would you like take out for a special date? Drew Barrymore. I just love her. Best compliment you have ever received I have received a lot of them and every single compliment is special to me. Many say that I don’t act but I am just natural on the screen. That is good enough for me. Best friends in the industry Srinivas Avasarala (Ashta Chemma), Nandini Reddy and Swathi. What will you do if you suddenly turn into an Eega? My god! That’s tough. Curious as I am, maybe I’ll secretly listen to people to know what they talk about me. Fitness secret Happiness.

How about the support from your family? They never objected to my aspirations. My parents trusted me and knew that I would make it big one day. I lived up to their expectations. Directors you would want to work with Definitely Mani Ratnam! How would you rate yourself as an actor? It keeps changing from film to film.

FIRST THING THAT COMES TO YOUR MIND Rajamouli - Taskmaster Sudeep - Not a baddie in real life Gautam Menon - Perfectionist Samantha - Beautiful Swathi - Talented Nitya Menon - Beauty with a super brain Nandini Reddy - Hard working Ilayaraja - Maestro

BHAJJI’S GEETA The two greatest religions of India, cricket and cinema are going to unite again! No we are not talking about the IPL. This time it is our cricketer Harbhajan Singh and actress Geeta Basra (The Train). The duo has always denied their affair and maintained that they are ‘just good friends’. But last week the couple was clicked together in Jaipur spending some quality time at Raj Vilas. No better way to unwind than being with your lady love, that’s what Bhajji did before the intense practice sessions for IPL. Even later in the Jaipur airport the couple couldn’t hide from the paparazzi. Contrastingly, the duo reacted more candidly. Blushing Bhajji even posed for the cameras while Geeta with a mysterious smile joined him at the check-in. A close pal said while Mr. Singh was always frank about his relationship, it was Geeta who wanted them to keep it under wraps to avoid tittle-tattle about their fairytale.

SHE GRINS AND BARES A bunch of flowers, a box of assorted chocolates or just hearty wishes are what a normal human being thinks when he or she wants to thank someone. But when it’s with model Poonam Pandey, she simply sheds her clothes. This time it was for team India’s young Vice Captain Virat Kohli, who scored a victorious 183 in recent Indo-Pak match. Kohli who gave nightmares to bowlers, was clean bowled by India’s strip queen’s nude doosras. As soon as Virat scored those figures, Poonam flaunted her voluptuous figure by posting her hot lingerie photos on twitter and tweeted “wowww…whatta match! muwaaaaah luv u virattttt.” However, this is not for the first time earlier she presented nude gift to Sachin on his 100th ton. JAB THEY MET No...it’s not a reel sequel of Shahid-Kareena’s Jab We Met, but seems to be a real story of the Rockstar actress, Nargis Fakhri and Shahid Kapoor. Apparently there are hot talks around the B’town that the couple is romantically linked up. The glam diva has not only secured a strong position in Mr. Kapoor’s heart but also in his home as well. The news of her moving-in Shahid’s place was rooted when Nargis frequented her visits to his Versova residence and even stayed there for almost a week. This gorgeous Kingfisher model was even rumoured to introduce her special friend to her mom who flew in from abroad. While Shahid after his breakup with Bebo was linked up Vidya Balan, Piggy Chops, Anushka Sharma and tennis star Sania Mirza; Miss Fakri was also rumoured to date Ranbir Kapoor and Shyam Munshi. However, her folks never met any of her dates, so we guess with Sasha its “full on.”

HOLLYWOOD MASALA MARRIAGE NO MUST The singing sensation Enrique Iglesias disclosed that despite dating his tennis champ girlfriend Anna Kournikova for nearly 11 years, the couple has no immediate plans to tie the knot. “I’ve never really thought marriage would make a difference. Maybe it’s because I come from divorced parents, but I don’t think you love someone more because of a piece of paper,” said Enrique to a US magazine. Anna also holds almost similar view and thinks as long as she is happy in her love life with her beau, marriage isn’t must. “I believe in commitment. I believe in being open and trusting each other and respecting each other completely,” she adds, although she is quite eager about motherhood. “I absolutely want to have children, whether I have my own or adopt,” shares Anna.

SHHH SHHH SHHH….PAPA SLEEPING! “I had sex with Lindsay Lohan,” claims a porn star while her dad Michael was sleeping in the same house. Alex Torres (screen name Voodoo) revealed it while speaking on ‘The Jim Richards Show’. On being enquired by the host Richards for suggestions as to what questions Torres should ask Michael in an upcoming interview, he replies, “ask him [Michael Lohan] if he knows about that night I had with his daughter while he was sleeping upstairs.” From Voodoo’s excerpts, it even sounds like as Lohan has paid for his service. “Many of these Hollywood celebrities pay me a high price dollar to come and satisfy them. I’m not joking!” he insists. On the actor’s defense, Lohan’s representative Steve Honig reacted saying, “I don’t feel the need to respond to claims made by a porn star.”

AMANDA-JOSH’S PDA Finally the cupid-blown couple couldn’t hide any more. Actress Amanda Seyfried and ‘Pearl Harbor’ star Josh Hartnett who were rumoured to date each other for a long time, were spotted together for the first time in public. Earlier, a US magazine reported to see the pair together out and about in Hollywood. This time an eyewitness narrates “at one point, Seyfried sat in Josh’s lap with her arm around him, and took his knit hat, placing it on her head as she looked at him. Josh seemed considerate and Amanda really seemed to love the attention and looks he gave her.” Whether Amanda’s feel-good-expression for Harnett lasts long or not, is yet to be seen! As earlier she was reported to romance actors Dominic Cooper, Ryan Phillippe and Alexander Skarsgard. red | april 2012 | 56

CELIBATE CELEB Perennially young Nagarjuna seems to be taking special measures to get into his new character. He is currently busy with Raghavendra Rao’s Shirdi Sai Baba where Nag plays the title role. It is heard that he is staying away from his girlfriends and is putting a check to all his extracurricular activities. Sources reveal that Nag is following a very strict daily routine and is not giving chance to rumour mill which might ruin his Baba image. Tabu and Anushka, who are pretty close to the star, are away from him for the same reason. In the past, he followed the same thing while shooting for Annamayya and Sri Ramadasu. Well, hope the sentiment works this time too and delivers a hit.

SNEHA’S KAHAANI Homely girl Sneha is in trouble. Seriously! It is heard that a producer was desperate to remake the Bollywood blockbuster Kahaani and he was keen on casting Sneha in Vidya Balan’s role. Though the lady was excited about the project, her actor fiancé Prasanna rejected it. He doesn’t want his lady to get pregnant for her reel life before their marriage in May. He feels that such films might tarnish the image of his very conservative family. But the producer is still heard to be behind Sneha to convince her would-be ‘hubby’ dear. We too feel that Prasanna is acting funny. After all, she gets pregnant only for the film right!

PHOTO FINISH Many of our stars today owe their success to graphics and other software that help them look young. One such star who is heavily dependent on photoshop is Mass Maharaja Raviteja. In all his latest flicks like Veera, Nippu, Dongala Mutha and Daruvu, he doesn’t sport a single wrinkle on his face. He rather looks polished and his skin is too glossy. We all know the reason behind it! A little birdie told us that not just on the posters, but even on the screen the same kind of techniques are being used to enhance his looks. When asked about it, RT says that his handsome looks and high energy levels will never get weak. It seems he is just tired! Phew!

BUBBLE BURST Bubbly ‘aunty’ Genelia Deshmukh’s career will soon be in doldrums. Her latest flick Naa Istam with Rana is facing resistance at home. Apparently, sasurji Vilasrao Deshmukh is not keen on the release of the dubbed version and is warning the distributors to stay away from buying the film. He doesn’t want his bahu to romance another man on the screen and he strongly feels that his people might make fun! Our producers felt that Genelia and Rana are anyway popular in the North, thanks to their Bollywood flicks and hence this film too will fetch a few pennies. But with the former CM’s order, nobody is ready to step out. Will this be Genny’s last film then?

TIDBITS

NAYAN ON NEW HIGH After many a twist to her love story with Prabhu Deva and even after calling it quits to acting, Nayanatara is back, for the good. She has also bagged a role opposite Gopichand in a yet-to-be titled film after signing Nagarjuna's romantic entertainer and Rana's Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum. Industry sources also reveal that Nayan is desperate for money given the fact that her ex-beau blew away her money in the name of film production. Looks like the breakup is a blessing in disguise for this Malayali kutty as more and more producers may make beeline to sign her.

YET ANOTHER SEQUEL

CHIRU APING RAJINI

Close on the heels of a string of sequels like Arya 2, Muni 2 and Gayam 2, yet another movie’s sequel is in the offing. Sources said the sequel to super hit Kandireega is being planned and hero Ram is said to have given green signal to Kandireega 2. Santosh Srinivas, the director, who resurrected Ram’s career with Kandireega is said to be directing the sequel too. Despite his differences with Ram, after the film’s release, Bellamkonda Suresh is producing the sequel. Looks like now the duo has patched up for this project! After almost being on the verge of oblivion, Ram is badly in need of some more hits.

Looks like Mega Star Chiranjeevi is taking a leaf out of Super star Rajinikanth’s book. According to the buzz from film town, Chiru is likely to do a ‘performance capture’ film in his 150th movie. It seems megastar is toying with the idea of doing a film in the lines of Kochadaiyan. For this project, Chiru has to spend some time with the experts who will capture his reactions, mannerisms and body language. He needn’t go before the camera and strain his body as everything would be graphically done. The film, however, will materialise only after seeing the success of Rajinikanth’s movie. Meanwhile, someone may go and prevail upon Chiru to don the grease paint before he decides to take up an animated movie!

CRICKET TUNES PAUL IN BIG LEAGUE Down south producers have a penchant for importing heroines from the North. However, our own Amala Paul seems to have proved it wrong, and is making her presence felt in the field. In fact within a year, she became the talk of the tinsel town and has snatched some really juicy offers. It is learnt that she is all set to enter the big league. According to sources, Amala has been signed for a Tamil film Boologam wherein she is paired opposite ‘Jayam’ Ravi. If sources are to be believed the producers yielded to her demand of Rs. One Crore. If she gives a sizeable hit in Telugu, Amala can surely give a chase to the likes of Kajal Agarwal, Samantha and Tamanna.

Latest music sensation in Tollywood, Thaman has been roped in to compose theme music for Deccan Chargers for the 5th season of IPL. After giving a fresh lease of life to Prince Mahesh with his chartbusters in Dookudu and Businessman, Thaman is holding the baton for projects like Baadshah, Ramcharan-V V Vinayak film, Siddharth-Nandini Reddy film et al. But the only drawback is that, this very talented composer gets inspired with a few angrezi tunes and just copies them. But now guess Mr. Tams should really concentrate on this new project because the Deccan Chargers team might not be convinced with the copy tunes.

SHRIYA IS NOW CHAMELI Don Seenu was her last hit perhaps. When she was about to land in limbo, hot bombshell Shriya Saran pinned a lot of hopes on Nuvva Nena with Allari Naresh and Sharwanand. But the film appears to have bombed at the boxoffice. But good news is that she has one more film in her kitty, the details of which she does not want to reveal immediately. But sources in the industry say that a director approached the hottie offering a prostitute’s role in his upcoming Telugu movie for which he has considered ravishing Shradda Das earlier. Will she accept the role of a prostitute, especially now when her career is sinking? Whether she gives a green signal or not, she should ponder over for a while because Kareena Kapoor and Anushka excelled in such roles.

SONG EULOGIZES JR. NTR JALSA TEAM IS BACK After burning his hands with Khaleja, this time director Trivikram has decided to do a film with his old pal Pawan Kalyan. The core team of Jalsa is coming together again for this romantic entertainer that is likely to go on floors in October. Ileana has been roped in to play the female lead. Since Powerstar is badly in need of a hit after a string of flops like Teenmar, Puli and Panja, he has readily agreed to do Trivikram's next movie for producer BVSN Prasad. Let’s hope the team dishes out another Jalsa.

Veteran music director late Saluri Rajeswara Rao composed a song praising NTR in Manushulantha Okkate. Emulating his senior perhaps, music composer MM Keeravani is said to have composed a special song eulogising Jr. NTR. Producer Vallabha says, ‘Keeravani has composed five extraordinary songs for our film Dammu and apart from the songs, he has also composed a special slokam which is a tribute to our hero NTR and his good qualities.’ Let us watch if the new song repeats the same magic or not?

ACHIEVE YOUR HIGHEST POTENTIAL BY CHITRA JHA With exams just getting over, the next big thing that is killing you perhaps is waiting for the results. Vacation, counselling, if nothing else a motivational book of this genre can certainly elevate your low morale.

TAAPSEE REJECTS SUNIL PRINCE TURNS KING Here’s good news for Mahesh Babu’s fans. Prince is anointed as King. He crossed the borders of AP and is ready to reign the entire nation. It is a known fact that Mahesh is the brand ambassador for Thums Up. Seeing his mass appeal among youth and his position as the 5th Most Desirable Man in India perhaps, the cola brand has decided to use him as National Brand ambassador replacing Bollywood hero Akshay Kumar. The recent ads are enough testimony that Mahesh rocks anywhere in the country. With the sudden shoot-up in his fan base, no wonder he is crowned the King!

Sometimes it looks like heroines have an upper hand in the tinsel town. Though he has given a string of hits like Andala Ramudu, Maryada Ramanna and Poolarangadu, comedian turned hero Sunil seems to have failed to impress gals who refuse to play opposite him. After refusing to be cast opposite Sunil in Andala Ramudu, Arati Agarwal seemed to have relented and the film, as all of us know, became a hit. Now the latest talk is that after agreeing to play opposite him in a new project, Taapsee is said to have rejected the offer. Don’t get disappointed dude! In his career’s nascent phase even Chiranjeevi is said to have been booed by many a heroine. Has not he become Megastar? Patience always pays!

Lazy summer afternoons can be best spent if one has a game or two on hand. This month’s list is quite exciting with Mario and Ninja. Gear up for a lot of surprises! SHOOT MANY ROBOTS

BLADES OF TIME

You can blow away the mechanical hordes of baddies with a huge range of weapons. This highly addictive kill-crazed co-op shooting game offers plenty of action just at $10. Except for the monotony of the game and repetitive killing and explosions, Shoot Many Robots is a hit. An array of weapons and gear makes the game exciting. Humorous one-liners send you into peels of laughter. Critics opine that it is mindless and repetitive but shut your brain for a while and get shooting!

The story and the controls might appear messy but the events you partake get the game going. Along with Ayumi, the protagonist, you would need to fight against the baddies who are usually gigantic and dominant. The biggest problem lies with the controls. Sometimes, when you push the buttons, nothing happens on screen. If you push the buttons too hard, you will only end up using your reserves. Now that you know how the Blades need to be controlled, have fun combating the bad guys who pounce on Ayumi!

NINJA GAIDEN 3 You don't need to do much but hammer on a few buttons and occasionally block or dodge. But every last kill is surely a cinematic event. A shallow action game Ninja Gaiden 3 is challenging and intense with flashy, brutal swordplay and plenty of memorable encounters. Though very little skill is required to play the Ninja, the action is bound to keep you glued. The boss fights especially are interesting and they instill a sense of progression. Enjoy the battle.

MARIO PARTY 9 Too familiar and too predictable! But if you are a hardcore fan of the Mario series, then there’s no looking back. Behind all those flashy colours and costumes, the people are the same. This fun, multiplayer action game is a treat to eyes. The colourful mini games are new to the players, that makes it different from the rest of the games. Don’t play solo because it can get monotonous after some time. Except for the repetitive moves and treasures, Mario Party is good.

FIFA STREET Worth the four-year wait! The game is almost at par with Street Fighter but the cartoon-like visuals and impossible stunts in the air make it different. Stylish, fast-paced FIFA comes in a comprehensive career mode. The slick presentation of the game makes it as entertaining as watching a live game. What pull you back from playing FIFA are the complex controls that are difficult to comprehend and learn. Though some grinding is required to move ahead in the World Tour mode, the technical prowess is matchless.

EE ROJULLO

T

hough initially touted as a low budgeted film with new faces, Ee rojullo seems to have been picking up momentum. The story is about the complex relationship between boys and girls. Director Maruthi comes up with a brisk narration, few laughable scenes and some peppy tunes, making this flick a good one. The content of the film is its oxygen. The lead stars, though very new, come up with a good performance. Leading lady Reshma looks like Trisha in many angles. The film is shot with a 5D camera which has been used by Ram Gopa Varma for his disastrous Dongala Mutha. Don’t look at the budget or the absence of star faces. Just watch Ee rojullo if your heart is young!

NAA ISHTAM

inally we get to see macho man Rana dancing to a couple of songs in Naa Istam! Rana plays the role of a practical man who helps the heroine and finally falls in love with her. Genelia who’s pretty much used to running away from the pelli mandapam repeats the act again only to find that her boyfriend is a baddie. The rest of the story is about how the lead pair finds true love. Rana needs to work on his expressions and body language. Genelia with minimal makeup was just average. Harshavardhan Rane is the surprise element. Director Prakash Toleti lacks grip on narration and conviction. Watching it is mee ishtam! 3

inally, we get to see Why this kolaveri di.The song from the much-awaited debutorial film of Aishwarya Dhanush with husband Dhanush and Shruti Hassan as the main leads, aroused a lot of curiosity. The film with a unique name starts off on a sad note, but as time trickles, we know the reason as to why it has been titled 3. Aishwarya, with her simple narration, manages to hold the audience till the end. The pace slackens here and there, but the storyline is just fantastic. The lead pair’s chemistry is the biggest asset. In the roles of college students, they fit in well, thanks to their physical appearance. Music director Anirudh is at his best. Take a bow young man! No messages, no moral science stories but a startling story. Impressive performances of the cast makes 3 a good film. Don’t miss it!

irector Sriram Raghavan who made twisters like Johnny Gaddar and Ek Haseena Thi, comes up with a spy-thriller. Secret agent Vinod is on a mission to trace a lethal nuclear bomb which is potent enough to trigger the World War 3. It’s all about girls, guns, guts and goons! A typical desi version of the Bond flicks, Agent Vinod doesn’t disappoint you. Saif strips off to show his chiseled body but fortunately has his pants on and is at his stylish best. Kareena is sexy as usual and pulls off the mysterious role with ease. Though a tad longer and complicated, Agent Vinod is slick and stylish! Don’t miss out the breathtaking locations and Bebo’s mujra.

hen it comes to Indian car, the first name that springs up is Maruti. So all its fans out there, another happy news is on its way. Maruti Suzuki India is going to launch its 7-seater "Ertiga" that created great excitement when it was unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo, New Delhi. With its launch, it will also mark the company's debut into high-end multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) category. Get a preview of this wonder wagon from Ishi. R

red | april 2012 | 63

Though it won’t be wrong to call it India’s first baby MPV, it doesn’t look squeezed. It is handsome and proportionate. A close glance gives you the impression that it has got the best features of many of its siblings. The edgy and peeledback headlamps remind one of Swift while A-pillar and the bulbous bonnet bring to mind the Ritz. However, the distinct features are its flared wheel arches, huge aggressive chin and the blackedout pillars which go into crafting of sporty Ertiga.

C

FEATURES • Anti-lock braking system (ABS) with EBD • Dual SRS Airbags • Three-spoke, tilt adjustable electric power steering • Integrated music system with steering mounted music controls • Alloy wheels • Keyless entry In comparison with other MPVs, it is also different in many aspects - starting from its size to its built i.e. monocoque unlike body-on-frame chassis. Coming to interiors even the cabin gives you an airy feel, owing, perhaps, to the extensive use of light-coloured plastics. With as many as six bottle holders at hand, you can go on long drives without taking aqua breaks. This macho machine will be pretty spacious with foldable rear seats which allow .444w extra boot space. With all seats up it can easily accommodate a couple of bags. Based on Maruti’s new R3 concept, it has three rows with long wheelbase. Powered by all-new K series engine (both petrol and diesel options), as per the speculations, this will be rolled out in the Indian market in at least six variations. The smart pricing will add fuel to sales of unique MPV.

Black and orange are the predominant colours, while sharp angles and steep creases define it. The front mudguard is bolted above elegant and slim-spoke alloy wheels. A stubby stainless steel exhaust box is neatly tucked underneath. There’s a chin-set auxiliary light below the headlight, while a compact digital instrument cluster sits over it. The 200 Duke comes with Bajaj-typical illuminated switchgear, dimpled palm grips, a comfortable set of levers and good mirrors. The 10.5-litre fuel tank offers deeply recessed, snug thigh supports. Button-started, the KTM 200 Duke outputs a delightful exhaust rumble. Although the throttle response is immediate, aided by a massive 38 mm throttle body, we did notice the fuel injection system feels a little unsettled in a narrow range between just over idle and 3,000 rpm. Bajaj claims a 0-60 kph time of 3.3 seconds and 0-100kph in 9.2 secs.

GADGETS

CHANGERS I

nflation or deflation, we always have a place for new gadgets that hit the market in huge numbers. April too is quite packed with a flurry of releases and here are a couple of the hottest devices that make heads turn and your life easy! G

APPLE’S NEW IPAD Last year, Steve Jobs emphatically said, “When world is trying to copy our first generation tablet, we are ready with the new one - the iPad 2.” Although Jobs is no more, his words still hold good. To be honest, the new iPad is the best iPad ever. It’s four times better than its predecessor and it outweighs majority of the high definition televisions that we see around. On the new iPad, text on websites and books is crisper than ever. There is a better camera too. As always, Apple came out with a fancy name for a 5-megapixel camera, called iSight camera. It can record a video at 1,080 progressions.

red | april 2012 | 67

The new A5X chip is a welcome addition. But what is worth a mention is the new quad-core graphics chip. It’ll be a long while before it challenges the console - but it is yet another step closer, especially with Airplay, which allows full HD games to be beamed on to a big screen and controlled by pad movements. The new iPad has surprisingly new apps. The photo editing software gives you a chance to instantly share edited pictures on Facebook and Twitter. Apple has mastered the art of making devices, which look beautiful. The resolution is a revolution. Applications like iBooks, iPhoto, and Garage band are wonderful additions. If this is your first tablet, you’ve many surprises waiting!

Good news for cluttered work places. Chuck out your old, heavy, space-eating scanners and welcome the game changers. LG’s LSM-100 mouse scanner is surely the quintessential 21st Century device that aims at saving space yet being highly functional. It offers an array of functions that blend innovation with convenience. The company has already announced that it would mark a new era for scanners and guess it lived up to the word.

LG SCANNER MOUSE

By holding the smart scan button you can scan images as large as A3 paper size, larger than all conventional portable scanners and that too in all formats - PNG, DOC, XLS, JPEG, TIFF and PDF. All you need to do is to swipe the mouse over the image. The icing on the cake is the Optical Character Recognition that converts images into an editable Word document. This saves a great deal of time and relieves you from the herculean task of re-typing the entire text. LSM-100 works on laser sensors that are accurate and durable. The stylish and ergonomic design aids in smooth and easy motion. This bad black boy from the LG family will be yours at just $148.

GMATE

APPLICATIONS

The latest companion device for all iPod and Android devices is the Gmate. It is a Bluetooth accessory which is actually a phone minus keyboard, screen, memory and audio functions. It links to your Bluetoothenabled device to use its resources. Though techno-savvy people termed it a dumb phone, it can literally add wings to iOS and Android phones. The Gmate also serves as a 3G modem. If you have a Wi-Fi enabled iPad, for instance, then this becomes a handy way of surfing the net via 3G.

ADVANTAGES OF USING THE GMATE iPhone or Android phones can be converted into dual SIM phones Enables an Apple iPod Touch with all the phone features iPad or Android Pads can surf the internet

Inputs From Mr. Sahani, Mobi Care

Temple Run This is for all the gaming freaks who prayed real hard for their favorite game to appear on the android platform. Your prayers are answered! The game temple run will be on android from 27th of this month. TrackID

For a country, which is working hard on unique identification for everyone, this might be interesting. There is an app on android platform, which gives identity to every song you listen to. An app named TrackID can do something more too. It can share the track you’re listening to on Facebook and can access artist biographies, view music videos of the song you’re listening to on YouTube. iPod Safe iPod Safe is an app, which allows you to download videos on YouTube. There is a bonus too. You can convert the downloaded clipping into mp4 format. Of course, there are some additional features like fake password too. Explore it yourself. G red | april 2012 | 68

MAN OF MERIT I

t is said that a room in a house or a house in an environment or an environment in a city has to be designed, considering it in its next larger context. That is what Mr. Thummala Naga Prasad, Chairman, People Combine, has precisely done both in building a smart house for himself and institutions of quality education for the gen next. Thanks to him, the state got its first international school, Oakridge. L

red | april 2012 | 69

The power couple of education Mr. Naga Prasad and Dr. Radhika are like two sides of one coin. While he tries to satiate the new ‘market appetite’ for education, she contributes her own mite to it, being the Asst. Professor of Biochemistry, AU. But ask them who the master is at home. Pat comes the reply in unison - “We are pals.” Meet the smart, savvy and highly articulate Mr. Naga Prasad, for a few moments and you need not scout too far to find out the rationale behind his quick climb to success. Brimming with confidence, courage and conviction, he exudes positive vibes that V. Sarada captures in an exhaustive interview. EXCERPTS “The British introduced subjects and curricula that were alien to the Indian milieu and our people adopted strategies of rote memorisation and exam success,” says an educationist. What is Mr. Prasad’s take on it? Yes, that is what we did. But I see the futility of ‘chalk and talk’ teaching style and handing down yesterday’s methodologies to tomorrow’s citizens. The inherent flaw in our system is students are trained to ‘by-heart’. With the result, even those who score 95% in their board exams slide down to 25% in EAMCET. Our aim is to bridge the gap between learning and application. We want to send out a thinking individual by giving him right things at right time and in right proportions. What about Mark Twain’s jibe - “I've never let my school interfere with my education?” This certainly held good for the earlier generations. We, new-age educationists, strive to prepare the student to take the world head on. Your entry to this field is dubbed as the civil services’ loss is the education sector’s gain, is it so? Yes, my inability to make it to civil services prompted me to add value to the existing education system. I am familiar with all the nuts and bolts that keep this machinery run right from the childhood as I studied in my father’s own school in Nuzvid. We entered the arena in 1993, after studying the functioning of at least 100 schools at home and abroad. Visakhapatnam offered a ready ground for our experiment as at that time students

from the North Coastal Andhra were looking up to Guntur and Nellore for the EAMCET training. That was how the Vikas Educational Institutions (now People Combine) was born. THE GENESIS Even during our modest beginning with less than 200 students, we were quality conscious, roping in the best of teachers and students. But over the years, I am convinced that the standard of a school is directly proportional to the calibre of teachers. While I didn’t lower the bar for my teachers, I threw open our doors for students, letting them in on purely the first come first served basis. The only term I set for admission is that the parent should be in sync with our philosophy. What is the philosophy? Every child comes carrying a bundle of talents, but is oblivious to its contents. It is the teacher’s duty to help him unwrap it. This renders the mentor’s role all important. Secondly, we go only for child-centric measures, whether it is the syllabus at the macro level or a restroom amenity at the micro level. The judicious mixture of academic and extracurricular activities gives our students something to carry back, besides homework. How do you get foreign concept accepted here? The international curricula are the need of the hour and it is time we accepted it. Our Hyderabad schools follow IB, IGCSE (Cambridge) and

CBSE modules. Vizag Oakridge is with Cambridge and CBSE. Bangalore branch will have all the three. Are you not moving away from our roots? The ageless education is all about making a difference to the human life. The quintessential learning remains the same, only interpretations vary. Hurdles? The market is capital-intensive. Our Bangalore branch is estimated at a whopping Rs. 120 cr. Raising that kind of money is difficult. The first Oakridge cost us Rs. 26 cr. Our financiers ridiculed our proposals stating that we could set up two medical colleges and five engineering colleges for the same cost. It was tough convincing them. Second is the gestation period. A school takes a long time to establish its credentials as its impact on alumnus can be gauged only after he advances well into life. Our schools, which are not marks-oriented, take even longer. Do you join the chorus on falling standards in teaching? Certainly not. Here we must consider the statistics. Previously, teaching was one among just four employment avenues open to the educated and 15% of the children were at school. Today there is a wide range of career options and 85% go to school. The highly qualified opt for greener pastures as, traditionally, teaching is red | april 2012 | 70

a less paid job. Candidates those come our way are generally housewives looking for that extra buck or ‘time pass’. Four decades ago a town like Guntur could boast of 100 teachers and out of them 40 could be termed as experts. Now for the same town we require 10,000 teachers but have only 1,000. Hence it’s just a notional decline in standards. Future plans? Plenty. Aggressive in our aspirations, we plan to set up 50 world-class schools all over the state by 2015. Our Bangalore school and the two schools in Bhimvaram are well underway. Corporate social responsibility I give through sharing. We have adopted some government schools, encouraging a healthy interaction between respective teachers and students. We let them use our infrastructure. Under an exercise Spurti we encourage our students to teach the underprivileged. On the government’s role Unfortunately, our successive governments have failed to give education its due status, spending only a mere 6% of the GDP. There is a need for more initiatives. Do you admit that your school is for the rich? It amazes me that parents rather buy a car but not spend the same amount on their ward’s education which will stand him in good stead for the rest of his life. Competition There is no dearth of scope and space. Visakhapatnam with its cosmopolitan profile can accommodate many more schools.

ne glance at 10 Downing Street, residence of the British Prime Minister, is enough to show that even a lavish mansion looks bare without a touch of green. Moreover, that leafy bridge between the cozy interiors and harsh outside world is not only welcome but also imperative. When there is a green canvas, we only want to make it picture-perfect with the necessary embellishments. To achieve it, you must follow Ranita Ray and the city’s ace interior designer Bina, who step into the often-ignored outdoors. They offer a wide range of tips - right from setting up that rustic wooden bench to creating an alfresco living room. D

plenty of outdoor or garden furniture. A rustic look can be attained by placing two or four folding wooden chairs, a bench, or stools shaped out from huge stones or logs. To complement them, place a table, not the usual one,but one carved out from a wooden wine barrel. Keep those Adirondack or Muskoka chairs, which are quite favoured in rural, outdoor settings. With their contoured seats and backs, they are some of the most comfortable and practical outdoor seating available.

that is a great charmer. Even a single piece would do if you have a space crunch. Lovely bamboo swings are the rage now. Vast space can accommodate a family swing or a three-seater. Go for one made with MS (mild steel) pipe.

walkway/passageway or sitting area. Get it built with any wood to get that perfect oasis for your backyard. Even a gazebo or a garden pagoda can serve the purpose apart from ornamenting your garden. Awnings (generally done with canvas or plastic) can be considered to roof large outside spaces over a simple structure. It will allow the light to sieve through, keeping the space sheltered but not murky. Other simple ways are canopies; these days they come in varied colours and designs. If you want, fix glass walls enclosing it. The market offers ample choice for even garden drapes as a substitute to glass lattice.

Other trendy options can be pinewood, synthetic-finished-cane, all-weather vinyl chairs, wicker or even that chic cast iron furniture.

Splash of water Greenery sans aqua seems fragmentary. Thus go with the fashion of flaunting a water body. It can be a spewing fountain or even an artificial spring cascading on a stone embedded wall or it could be a tiny lily pond. They can certainly add charm.

Direct lightings are better to be avoided. Hide ’n glow can be a play with lights, by putting them behind the plants, shrubs, beneath the bench or hanging lights from the canopy etc. Keep the lighting as dim as possible.

Try installing them below the eye level while seated. Warm lights in shades of yellow are always preferred. However, for a dramatic appeal, blue can be tried. Pathway or walk lights, area or spotlights (highlight a specific part), torch lamps, lanterns or latest LED strips - illumination has no bounds.

Pet(ite) space Let your pets be a part of your gorgeous garden. Keep a pet corner. Fauna - from pups, rabbits to birds like pigeons, parrots, sparrows -

Spice it up Sit and chat without eating looks half-done. The call is for a serving counter. Let those chillers also be

part of good times. If you have enough space, install an outdoor mini-bar. A barbeque setup can also add warmth to your mood. Breeze, blossoms and buddies; why not some foot shaking beats too? Get those specially designed outdoor music systems. The high power speakers are fun too if your neighbours don’t object.

Pay attention • To nurture a perfect garden the ideal size is 15x20 sft. • Space crunch? Needn’t worry; take garden to your terrace. Limited furniture, perhaps a swing and four chairs can do wonders. Artificial grass is there to substitute for the green patch and flower pots to flaunt blossoms. • The prettier the garden the larger is the demand to maintain it on regular basis. D

eauty knows no boundaries, so are the ways to enhance it. And if it reflects regality, then god alone saves the onlooker! Ranita Ray tunes you to Thewa to make you feel right royal. R

Thewa Theory

elegance engraved red | april 2012 | 77

Thewa is a perfect example of the Indian jewellers’ consummate craftsmanship. Its origin dates back to the Mughal age. Around the year 1767 it was started under the patronage of Maharawat Samant Singh of Rajasthan. One of the traditional forms of pure handcrafted jewellery, it involves embossing of filigree or intricately worked out sheet of 23K gold on multi-coloured molten glass. The highlight of this genre is not just crafting of the yellow metal but also complementing it with glass which is treated by a special process to release glittering effects. The coloured glasses symbolise Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire. Usually the neck pieces are with Thewa pendants tied with precious and semi-precious gem beads. It may seem very simple but expert artisans take over a month to create a single piece.

The engraved motifs usually depict the culture, heritage and tales of romance and valour of Rajasthan, the Hindu mythology, Mughal court scenes, historical events or flora and fauna in a very intricate and detailed manner. That is why the Thewa pendants and their blazing hues and exquisite patterns attract women across the world. The amount of work, time and skill that goes into handcrafting each marvelous piece accounts for its price which varies from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 100,000 apart from the material and stones used."Thewa” in local parlance means "Setting". Cloaked in complete mystery as to its making, this art is restricted only to some families of artisans, who closely guard its nitty-gritty. They don’t share it even with the daughter of the house, lest it may be divulged to her in-laws. Thus the legacy is carried from father to son only.

The mystery of black is revealed in the creativity of this beautiful Thewa pendant tied to black pearls string. The bracket of tiny black beads at the base of the locket and earrings along with gold beads hanging at the bottom add to its appeal.

JATHARA PARIVARTASANA

UTTANAPADASANA Start in the supine position lying flat on the floor. Place hands under the buttocks one above the other, with the palms facing down. Lift the chest and abdomen as high as possible placing the crown of the head on the floor, without applying pressure on the neck. Release the arms, placing the hands next to the hips. Lift both legs up together, using the arms for support. Then raise the arms up with the palms touching each other. Stay in the same position for a minute and slowly release your body.

Lie on your back on the floor with arms stretched out at shoulder height forming the letter ‘T’ and palms facing down. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. Lift your hips off the floor and swing them to the left. Place them on the floor. Now try to pull your knees toward your chest and drop them toward the floor on the right side. Lengthen your spine by slowly inhaling. While exhaling, bring both the shoulders toward the floor. Hold the spinal twist for three complete breaths. Lift your legs off the floor and place your feet back down, to centre your hips on the floor. Repeat the process on the other side. Breathe evenly and comfortably through your nose. You can also practise this asana with stretching your legs straight.

Benefits: Reduces excess fat around the waist and abdomen. It also peps up the liver, spleen and pancreas. This pose is very effective in releasing sprains and catches in the lower back and hip region.

Benefits: This asana is very useful in strengthening the abdominal muscles and it checks constipation, if practised daily. It also reduces fat around the waist line and tones the kidneys.

PASCHIMOTTANASANA DHANURASANA Start by lying down on the belly. Bend the knees towards the back and hold the ankles with your hands. Inhale and lift the torso and legs upward at the same time. Breathe normally and hold this posture for about 30 seconds. Release the ankles very slowly and lie flat on your chest before you repeat the asana. This pose can strain the knees and spine and that is the reason you should be extremely careful with it. Avoid the bow posture if you have lower back injuries.

Benefits: Rheumatism of legs, knee joints and hands can be cured with this asana. It reduces excess fat around the abdomen, apart from massaging the liver, abdominal organs and muscles.

Sit on a mat with your legs stretched straight out in front of you. Breathe out. Slowly bend forward, trying to touch your feet. Don’t bend your knees. If you feel a constriction while bending, straighten up slightly and try bending forward. Don’t push yourself too hard. You may not be able to get very far if you are a beginner. It is important that you hold this pose at least for a minute. There is no point in just bouncing back and forth. Exhale, while returning to the normal position.

Benefits: It is the best pose to build a powerful abdomen and also useful in treating gynaec disorders, kidney, liver problems and diabetes. Practising this pose on a daily basis will give you a better body structure. W red | april 2012 | 84

BEAT A THE HEAT

h summer! This time of the year always means spending time at the pool and enjoying all your favorite outdoor games. Our bodies tend to shed more weight during summer than in winter. Why not make the best of it? If you are planning to hit the gym, here are a few tips that can help you in battling the summer heat. Time to change your fitness routine, food habits T and lifestyle! G

At the gym

Summer diet

1. An hour’s moderate workout is sufficient, more than which causes dehydration and heat sickness.

1. It’s always better to avoid oily, spicy and junk food and also untimely eating.

2. Take adequate and frequent breaks while working out - allow your body to cool down.

2. Avoid hot food and heavy meals - they add heat to the body.

3. Don’t expose the body to alternate temperatures, i.e. moving out of the a/c atmosphere into the hot sun causes skin dryness due to sudden variation in the temperature.

Hydration / Dehydration 1. Drink minimum 4 to 5 liters of water a day. 2. Do not skip breakfast. Include fresh fruit juices, coconut water and glucose in your fluid intake. 3. Carry a bottle of water or glucose whenever you are out in the sun to avoid dehydration. Don’t replace water with soda, juice, coffee, alcoholic beverages or other liquids.

2. Put an end to your afternoon siestas. They can make you lazy. Remedies for Heat Problems

UV Rays 1. UV rays are the most harmful between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm. They can cause sunburn, suntan, photo aging and also nail damage. Avoid outdoor exercises during this period. 2. Apply sunscreen lotion at least ½ an hour before you go out in the sun. 3. Wear sunglasses to avoid any harm to your eyes. What to wear? 1. Refrain from wearing silk, nylon and other synthetic fabrics that cause sweating and skin irritation. Cotton absorbs sweat thus keeping the body cool.

4. Plain water and sometimes sports drinks diluted with water should be a part of your diet. Carbonated drinks are not hydrants-they only add extra calories.

Zzzzzzzzzz…..

5. Alcohol should be avoided in the heat since it can contribute to dehydration.

1. Inadequate sleep during the night can harm your body’s metabolism. It also increases cortisol production

red | april 2012 | 85

which can lead to fat storage. Prioritize your sleep schedules and ensure that you sleep well atleast for eight hours.

2. Avoid black clothes as they radiate heat - white, beige and light shades are the best.

Prickly Heat - Use a prickly heat powder and wear loose clothes that allow the skin to breathe. You can also use a cold compress to relieve the prickling sensation. Heat Cramps - Take a break and let your body cool down. Drink clear juice or an electrolyte based drink. Gently massage the affected area and don’t resume physical activity immediately. If pain still persists, consult a doctor. Heat Exhaustion - Let the affected lie down straight on the floor in open-air or in an air-conditioned room. Loosen his clothes and sprinkle cold water on his body. Make him drink cool water. But avoid carbonated drinks. Heat Stroke - Move the affected into an air-conditioned room. Spray cold water on his face and make him drink water. Consult a doctor for further treatment. Dehydration - Drink more fluids like water, Gatorade or an electrolyte based drink. That should hydrate the body well. If there is no improvement, call for medical help.

FIG NEWTONS by Rekha Dutt “You seem to be calling a wrong number. My wife is a doctor and doesn’t cook,” is the retort we got from Mr. Anand Dutt when we wanted to meet his wife Dr. Rekha for a kitchen aside. Dispelling this rather ‘unpopular’ belief, she comes out with some rare recipes. Rekha who tops city’s socialites list apart from being a psychiatrist, seems to be a seasoned cook. “I love to cook, but my busy schedule doesn’t permit me to do so and this perhaps made my husband to declare me a non-cook,” she smiles. In the hustle bustle of the city’s busiest junction, Dr. Rekha opened the door of her serene and well maintained flat located in Dutt Island. With delicious smoothies and fruit-n-nuts brownies with ice cream, she greeted us in her living room. “Our food habit is very simple. I am a vegetarian by birth but grown non-vegetarian after marriage,” grins Rekha. “This exclusive Americans desert was what my mom learnt at the American Ladies’ Association in Bangalore and earned me lot of appreciations whenever I served it. It goes like this….

For dough 1 cup - Butter 2 cups - Brown Sugar or jaggery 1 tsp - Vanilla essence 3 Eggs 1 tbsp - Lemon Juice 4 cups - Flour 1 tsp - Salt 1 tsp - Baking soda 1 tsp - Baking powder For filling 1½ cups - Fig 1 cup - Water ¾ cup - Sugar or honey 3 tbsp - Flour ½ cup - Walnuts 2 tbsp - Orange juice

Method: Make the dough by mixing all the ingredients, giving it a smooth finish and keep it aside. For the filling, take finely chopped figs and boil them in water for 5mins and add sugar or honey and flour to it. Cook on a low heat, stirring frequently until it thickens. Add chopped nuts and orange juice, and let it cool. Divide dough in half and roll each half into 18x12x18 inch rectangle on a well floured pastry board. Spread filling over dough and cut dough into 3 inch wide strips. Using spatula, fold the dough over filling and cut into squares. Place them on ungreased baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake in moderate G oven at 375 degree (F) for 15 mins. C red | april 2012 | 89

verything seemed to have been in perfect place. Resplendent bride, handsome groom, celebrity guests in their brilliant best, exotic ambience and melodious tunes. The right royal event was the closest one could describe the wedding ceremony of Sarada Devi (Deepa) daughter of Mrs. Padmavati and Mr. Pusapati Viziagopal Raju that was held on March 17 at Visakha Function Hall. The groom Mr. Jagapathi Roy Chowdary, son of Mrs. Suseela and Mr. Kodali Satyanarayana Chowdary complemented the bride in every respect. Rather a closed door ceremony, it had witnessed a steady flow of celebrities from every walk of the life. red | april 2012 | 97

THE ORIGINATOR

1s are original thinkers. They devise new plans and execute them successfully. They appear stubborn and arrogant. Steadfast in all pursuits, they often turn good leaders and bosses. They are extremely honest and like to be the best. Self-employment is suited for them. They should be open minded and try to avoid being culturally confined.

For example: April 7, 1969 4 + 0 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 6 + 9 = 36 = 3 + 6 = 9 9 is the birth number to read for the birth date.

NUMBER GAME

Your birth date reveals who you are and what you are good at. To know your birth number, add all the numbers in your birth date together until one digit is left.

1

2

THE PEACEMAKER

2s are born with diplomatic qualities. Naturally benevolent, they often place others before themselves. They are expectedly analytical and intuitive and don’t like to keep aloof from others. We can say in one word they are gregarious. On the other hand, they rather remain alone than to continue an ‘uncomfortable’ relationship. It is better if they boost their self-esteem and express themselves freely. They should seize the opportunity and avoid procrastination.

11/2

THE INTUITIVE

Number 11 is the higher expression of 2. 11s are capable of tuning into the happenings around them. They can offer insight from a spiritual level. Since they are idealistic by nature, they often earn the sobriquet ‘dreamers’. They are capable of understanding both the earthly and spiritual realms. Since they are fond of helping others, those who are in need of help are naturally drawn to them.

3

THE LIFE OF THE PARTY

3s are known to be idealists. Besides being creative, they are very social, charming, romantic and easygoing. They kick off many new things. But their Achilles’ heel is that they don’t see them through. They always make others happy and are generally very popular. It is better for them to see the world from a more realistic point of view.

red | april 2012 | 101

4

THE CONSERVATIVE

Besides being sensible, the 4s are traditional. They are sticklers for order and are extremely patient. They start acting only when they understand what they are expected to do. As they are hard workers, they don’t mind getting their hands dirty. They are fond of outdoors and quite obviously love nature. They are stubborn and persistent. They should learn to be more flexible and nice to themselves.

22/4

THE MASTER BUILDER

The 22s are tuned to their spiritual side while doing the most mundane chores. They are well organised and capable of carrying out their tasks and believe in physical world. They become great leaders with a solid foundation based on the number 4 and the added dimension of the spiritual side based on the number 22. Since they are energetic and idealistic they always come up with better ideas.

5

THE NON-CONFORMIST

5s are the explorers. Being curious and enthusiastic, they always take risks that often land them in trouble. They always look for diversity and don’t like to be stuck in a rut. They believe that the world is their school and take lessons from every possible situation.

6

THE ROMANTIC

6s are idealistic. They should depend on a strong family connection as and their emotions play an important role in making decisions. With a dominating loyal streak in them, they always desire to take care of others. They are interested in art/music and make great teachers. They make loyal friends who take the friendship seriously. It is better for them to differentiate between what they can change and what they cannot.

33/6

THE COMPASSIONATE

The 33s cherish a love of beauty and balance. They feel a deep compassion for the world. They should guard against becoming martyrs as emotions always overwhelm them. They are helpful to others and lead the way.

7

THE INTELLECTUAL

7s are the eternal searchers with great insight. They always probe under the surface and find it difficult to accept things at face value. They have the habit of questioning everything in life. But they themselves don’t like to be questioned. They believe in the adage slow and steady wins the race. Since they are well-informedand have vast knowledge, they come across as philosophers. Sometimes they appear as loners. It is better for them to live in their own world, besides learning what is acceptable and what not.

8

THE BIG SHOT

8s have the ability to solve problems. They are proficient and possess good decision-making skills. Since they chalk out flamboyant plans they are eager to live life in a fabulous way. They are known for their sharp mental and unbiased attitude. They should learn to base their decisions on their own needs rather than on what others want.

9

THE PERFORMER

9s are natural entertainers. They are very caring. They are generous and contribute to the community. Their charming personality helps them make friends easily and nobody is a stranger to them. It is difficult to understand them because of their multi-faceted personality. They are like chameleons, ever changing and blending in the existing surroundings. Though the Dame Luck always smiles on them, they suffer from extremes in fortune and mood.

What word looks the same upside down and backwards I go in dry and come out wet. The longer I'm in the stronger I get. What am I? What starts with a T, ends with a T, and has T in it? What comes once in a minute, twice in a moment, but never in a thousand years? Two in a corner, 1 in a room, 0 in a house, but 1 in a shelter. What am I? I'm full of holes, yet I'm full of water. What am I? If you take 3 apples from 10 apples, how many do you have? What's white when its dirty? red | april 2012 | 112
