BIRYANIS AND MORE

www.redmagazine.in

mail@redmagazine.in

RISE OF THE RICE CULTURE

I

am often faced with the one question guiding the universal laws of food tasting- Is there such a thing as the ‘right’ ambience for biryani? The search, it is safe to say, ended in Siripuram, where a platter of regional Inidan biryanis, each with its unique taste and form, came together in the 2200 sft. of Biryanis and More. An expanding franchise model with more than 15 branches serving the delicacy across the altitudes of India, Biryanis and More is currently running 2 branches in our very own Vizag.

delicious curries, and an Andhra Bhojanam thali whch is a luxury only for the lunchers. So biryani for vegetarians doesn’t have to be mashed potatoes with boneless paneer pieces. That is unfair and unlovely, and you know it! The restaurant offers more than 40 varieties of Biryani, each of which is made with a unique sync of texture and spices. Because let’s admit it, the good

Afgan chicken biryani

S. Kalyan, a partner of the restaurant said, “Biryani needs a special style of preparation. Only mastering the authentic techniques can bring out its sterling true flavours.” Applauding this philosophy, the restaurant employs five in-house master chefs who churn out aromatic dishes. The restaurant is a pleasant 100-seater with a separate banquet hall for parties and birthdays. Vegetarians, wait up! Here’s your fare- a plethora of capsicum, mushroom, paneer and baby-corn flavoured biryanis; a bread basket of piping hot naan, rotis and pulkas;

ol’ dum biryani is obviously, hands down, the winner; but does that stop you from exploring? Launched 3 months ago, the restaurant brims with nearly 100 customers a day. The Sundays, especially, are a busy affair. When asked about the MUST HAVE’s, Kalyan added, “For the love of spice, you must try Palamuru biryani. It is dry and zesty. For vegetarians, we have special veg shahi and veg keema biryanis” A patron, however, begged to disagree. “The best biryani is the butter chicken they serve along with gongura chutni”, he said. Well, what can we say? Try it yourself and become a part of the heated debate.

Y

ou are a week away from your D-Day. Preparations are underway. But things are not going as they should be. Groom’s side has inflated guests’ list. Flowers you wanted for the mandap are in short supply. The hotel where you booked rooms for your family has not confirmed reservation. Ahhh… you are at your wit’s end. This is supposed to be your best day but looks like it is going to be the worst. What you need now is a magic wand to ‘shoo’ away all these issues. Pop! Here appears Triangle Entertainments, an event management company to handle the nitty-gritty of events. Sistersin-arms Vagdevi and Sreedevi run this facility in Rajyalakshmi Nilayam, VIP Road. “The lack of professional services in the city made us start Triangle. We provide fresh ideas, unique styling and creative inputs to pull a dream wedding together. Our services are cost effective; we work in tandem with clients, that is in sync with the budget given. We assure transparency & ensure that every component of the event unravels as planned.”

They add, “Weddings are synonymous with excitement and happiness. Crafting that fairytale event needs months of planning and dedication! We have made this work easier for the couple, roping in the best vendors from Hyderabad & Bengaluru. All tasks- from finding that perfect venue, creating overall wedding aura, designing impeccable décor to selecting photographerare handled by us.” They even offer branding and promotions. But their expertise lies in managing corporate events. “In a span of ten days, we organised two big eventsone for Castrol India and other for Barmalori. The response was overwhelming,” they add. Factors that unite this team together are passion to serve & commitment to ensure that every event is an experience, a memory that stays etched in the mind of the guests, for a long time. “At present, we only cater to Vizag, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and East Godavari. Soon, we plan to spread to Vijayawada, Tirupathi & Rajahmundry.”

“This year we were proud to have two of our students procure a 45k/month internship offer with Zomato – where setting up in a new city will be based on the market potential research conducted by our students.”

“Established in 1987, it is the first management institutions of the state – founded with the vision to bring the exposure of an autonomous institution to Vizag,” says Dr.Vijaya Rudraraju, Director. She gave a warm welcome though it was a rush hour of admission cycle. The institution continues to uphold its standards tweaking its syllabus every two years and expanding scope as per the guidance given by a robust advisory committee. Their stronghold, however, is the ‘Design Thinking’. This is a unique aspect of imparting a wholesome education, relevant to changing times. ‘Learning by doing’ is the principle that not only education institutions, but also corporates are increasingly adopting today.

IIAM “institutionalizing adaption to changing times” By Medha Kohli “Unlike older times, today we no longer teach concepts. We provide an opportunity to apply them first and understanding succeeds this action by default.” With two courses at graduation and postgraduation levels, the students spend their second semester on the field, working on real time projects with industry specialists getting exposed to the corporations like Flipkart, TechMahindra etc.

They have the choice to opt for specializations from their third semester onwards – where they can choose from a wider array of subjects and dual specializations like operations, shipping and logistics, business analytics etc that few management courses offer. Their latest agship programme is the Corporate Mentorship programme where students are paired with an industrial expert of their choice who guides them in their academic and career path. With multiple features focussing on a 360 degree vision to prepare the student for the vroom paced world outside the aegis of the institution, IIAM lives true to their vision of contributing to the development of business and society through excellence in grooming leadership and entrepreneurial talent.

It is the residence of Mr.Venu Gopala Krishna Murthy, (simply Venu garu for his friends). The health enthusiasts thus gathered are housewives from the friendly neighborhood. There is a session in the morning too, we were told. The class is only one of the many community activities that take place at the home that is aptly named Ashirwad. peace and prosperity. It is lonely at the top, they say. Mr.Venu seems to have proved it wrong. With each ascent he made on the ladder of success, he has only gathered more friends, building a boundless ‘family’. Perfectly in step with him, is his life partner Mrs.Krishna Kumari, who silently contributes her mite to society. Profiling

Mr.Venu has to be done in 3 ways as he is a successful businessman, self-less social activist and stoic spiritualist. That is the order the giant unravels his eminent journey.

The genesis I hail from Eluru, where my father Sri.Ranganayakulu, ran a small business. My mother Smt. Kotiratnamma complemented him in every respect. I was brought up, along with a brother & a sister, in a pure and blissful atmosphere. I could not pursue higher studies due to unavoidable circumstances. With a burning passion to earn money, name and fame, I set foot in the world of trade at a very young age. The first step My uncles, who spotted that spark in me, honed my skills, taking me into their firm Sri Kusuma Haranath Engineering

Company in Vijayawada. The ourishing company, which was dealing with agricultural pumpsets etc. was already running 12 branches and I was sent to Vizianagaram for further expansion. The next 35 years, I lived there, building business and goodwill.

A JOURNEY OF SUCCESS By V. Sarada

Hard work That was the time I extensively toured Vizianagaram, Vizag and Srikakulam. I knew all of them like the back of my hand and had built ties with every possible public department and earned a good name for myself and our company. I feel proud that the city even now draws water from 10 high end pump sets that I had

fixed. My children, however, did not want to continue in this business and have moved to construction. We launched Pavan Builders in 1989, shifting base to Vizag. Notable among the 30 projects we took up with great success are Pavan Enclave, Pavan Arcade and Pavan Commercial complex. We have done a pioneer work, adding to the city’s skyline.

Hurdles No business can ever be described as hassle-free. So was mine. The satisfaction of earning adequate wealth to give livelihood to at least a few people makes you forget the hardships and hurdles. Success mantra Hard work, keeping up human values and team work are the key. I believe in equal distribution of work to the team members.

www.redmagazine.in

mail@redmagazine.in

Welfare activities This was the best treasure I inherited from my father, whose heart was with the poor. I might have pursued trade with passion, but my interest in the welfare of society ran parallel. Gradually, turned my attention to service and welfare activities. Aid to students I set up Gopala Krishna Foundation 10 years ago to give aid to the needy students. As many as 980 students are benefitted by it. I spent Rs.65 lakh till now.

with the less blessed. The spiritual pursuits are important for peace. Unforgettable incidents Though I never coveted it, my work has been duly recognized. At one go, I got 40 pumpsets fitted in farms of Annamrajupeta village. In appreciation, Sri.P.V.G.Raju, the Vizianagaram Maharaja blessed me.The second incident was when Sri.Shankar Dayal Sharma, the then Governor, came to grace the Rotary Club Silver Jubilee event organized under my leadership. I earned many awards and rewards during my tenure as the President of Vizianagaram Rotary Club. We could construct the club building too. Once the legendary NTR patted me for my good at a farmers meet I organsied.

On the GenX The present generation is any day smarter than ours and are bestowed with high IQ & abundant opportunities. My only regret is that they are highly materialistic. I wish they showed a little more care and concern to their fellow beings, rising above the confines of caste, creed and gender. Personal note I got married very young and my wife Kumari is my pillar of support. While my days were occupied with business activities, she raised our two sons – Narasimha and Mallikarjuna Rao and daughter Lakshmi with great care. We have a exemplary married life. A fellow with ego can never earn his family’s respect . So I don’t nurture it.

Sneha Sandhya Society has slipped from the Vasudhaika Kutumbam vision to a frog in the well perception. Neglected elders, self-seeking children and diminishing family values- all this ran like a film on my mind’s screen. I conceptualized Sneha Sandhya, an organization for senior citizens in 2004 and today it has 580 life members. We support and entertain one another. I also founded Age Care Foundation which dispenses healthcare not only to the senior citizens but also to the needy through free clinics. Healthcare I was the Founder-Chairman of the Netra, a Charitable Eye Hospital in Seripalli. This small dispensary set up under the aegis of Rotary International grew into a Rs.3 crhospital. I toured across the country, studying eye hospitals and even underwent a15-day training in Madurai.

FAMILY CORNER mail@redmagazine.in www.redmagazine.in

I FEEL BLESSED: KRISHNA KUMARI I come from a family where even the accounts of Dhobi were written by men. So there was no way I could have gone to school and study. We were married at a very young age and we set up our family in Vizianagaram. By the time I crossed 20, I was a mother of three. It all happened so fast that now it looks like a dream. I brought up the children single handedly as he was busy building his business. But my children were so disciplined and well-behaved that I never felt that it was a task. If I could head and efficiently run Inner Wheel Club at Vizianagaram and Vizag, and pen my views (she is a writer) it is purely at his behest and with his encouragement. Never does he say no to whatever I do nor does he use a harsh word. Though I am very unambitious, God has showered me with everything best. I am extremely happy with the service he renders to society. I am with him in each and every step he takes.

HE IS THE BINDING FORCE: Both my parents come from a modest family background, with no college education, but have been the pillars of support to all of us. Their unconditional trust and support to us in every aspect of life has been the most important factor for our success so far. My father's positive and confident approach to life has taught us to deal with many opportunities and situations. They have always been the reason behind our family-bonding and relationship. They are the living examples to exemplary parenting.

SUPPORTIVE FATHER FIGURE: When I came into this family I saw him as a workaholic who encouraged his sons in the family business and even gave us, daughters-in-law, space to do our own thing duly supported by our Athamma. Now at the age of 80, I see him take a backseat in the business and content devoting his time in support of girl child education and helping the needy.....a true philanthropist he is. -JAYA LALITHA, DAUGHTER-IN-LAW

- NARASINMHA RAO, SON

HE IS MY ROLE MODEL: Our parents repose uninching trust in us and have sacrificed all their lives and made all out efforts for us. They were always concerned about our future in business and family life. They have been guiding us with lots of patience. No doubt, they are our role models and I pray to God that we too emulate their nature, lifestyle and most importantly, meet their expectations.

THEY ARE ALWAYS THERE FOR ME: I am so happy to get an opportunity to say a few words about my father-in-law and mother- in-law, who are just like my parents. They are always there for me in my tough times and give me valuable suggestions. They always motivate me with their lifestyle. I am thankful to red magazine who for the first time gave me the opportunity to express my feelings about my parents-in-law.

co-authored six books for AU distance education. A keen sportsman, he won many body-building, weight lifting, boxing, long running contests, representing AU. He talks of the mighty educational institute that is taking shape physically in Gajapathinagaram, Vizianagaram and practically in the hearts of innumerable students who are looking up to it with hope. Centurion University was started in Andhra Pradesh in 2017, following the success of the parent university in Orissa in areas such as skill development and training. In fact, it is referred to as ‘Skills University’ in the State Government. Very soon, it will be shifting the base to the spectacular 100-acre campus with all the required infrastructure and amenities including residential facilities. Prof.Raju talks of the university that aims to add some unique dimensions to the education, taking it to a level never achieved before in the country. Gifting employment-ready students to the industry is the crux, he affirms, as he throws light on the curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular programmes the university offers.

EXCERPTS Sponsoring body Our sponsoring body is credible with top academicians as Trustees. Our Chancellor Dr.D.P.Patnayak is a Padma Sree awardee and former Additional Secretary, Govt of India. President, Dr.Mukti Kanta Mishra, who earned his Doctorate from a prestigious Australian university, is a renowned educationist and is a recipient of many international and national awards. Vice-President, Prof D.N.Rao is a Social Scientist Technocrat and Alumnus of IIM (K). They are consultants for many organizations on advanced project implementation both in India and abroad. Imparting education at affordable cost is their priority. Objective of the university? Our main aim is to provide best quality education and cater to the needs of the nation in general and North Andhra in particular.

Why Vizianagaram? Every single district in our state houses at least one university. But there is no university in Vizianagaram till date. We want to be the first to lay the foundations of a university there. We could acquire a sprawling 100 acres to build a world class campus with the necessary infrastructure. It is spacious, lush green and overall beautiful, creating an ambiance for scholastic pursuits. What courses do you offer? The branch we are operating in Gidijala junction offers 3 engineering programmeas, namely- Computer engineering, ECE (Electronic and Communication Engineering), and Mechanical engineering; and three paramedical courses, which areB.Sc Optometry, B.Sc Radiology, and B.Sc Anesthesia. The courses are unique and are customized, based on topographical needs. For e.g., we are going to launch a B.Tech course in mining as there are a number of mines around Vizag.

Your stress is on skill: tell us more We have tie-ups with major national and international firms for training and internships. While other varsities give less weightage to projects, we focus on practical experience & intense hands-on training. We want to prepare students for the market’s demands. For e.g., our students have gone to Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding, BSNL, Sameer Centre for Electromagnetics & other reputed organizations for their internship, while paramedical students went to Apollo, Max Vision Eye Hospital, Shankar Eye Hospital, KIMS, and Pradhama. Salient features We offer a health insurance cover to students, faculty and staff. We expose the students to advanced equipment to widen their scopes of learning. The examination system is completely paperless. Students are provided with Tablet PCs so that they can take (both objective, as well as essay-type) exams online. Ours is the first university to ever offer such a facility! Faculty and students. More than 80% of our faculty are Ph.D. holders. We give preference to quality and discipline. In fact, as encouragement, we give monetary rewards for each research paper. Meritorious students are awarded fellowships, and the option to pursue 2 degrees at the same time.

Co-curricular and extra-curricular benefits for students We have guest lecturers and visiting faculty to conduct regular seminars and conferences to impart out-ofsyllabus knowledge. We sponsor a student or teacher who wishes to take part in an external seminar. Extra-curricular activities: In-house faculty trains students in martial arts & yoga, & sports like hand ball, volleyball, cricket, etc. We have a basketball court, and a wide range cricket bowling machine. Residence and fee-structure Since we aim to provide education and development, our fee structure is extremely affordable. We charge about one-third of what other universities charge. As for the hostels, we have 100 girls and 40 boys in our residency programme at present. Meticulous steps are taken to ensure safety for girl students. Any major projects? We have affiliated with the AP Govt for 2 major projects. The first is in respect with ITI’s. The govt wants to modernize the 750 ITIs . It’s a task that requires excessive study and submission of reports, which is assigned to our professors. The second is a 3-year project that requires an eye screening of every citizen in North Andhra. We have started working in villages. There is a large-scale collection of data, which is then submitted for further examination. I am proud to say that

PROF.G.S.N.RAJU we travel to these villages in battery-driven three wheelers designed by our students! What lies ahead for Centurion University? Our plan is to expand the university to 30 branches, including engineering, sciences, paramedical, management, economics, law, pharmacy, and many more. By the end of a decade, we want to have at least 15 branches, and a hospital for training the students with considerable success. Tell us about the admission process. We are particular about our intake of students. We will continue to run a maximum of one section per course. Therefore, screening of the students is done accordingly. We conduct Centurion University Entrance Test. We also consider JEE scores and EAMCET rankings.

of private players. Venturing into this totally unfamiliar ground and making to the top in it, the courageous brothers, Mr.P.Rajan Babu and Mr.P.Ashok, founders of Sarojini Engineering Works Pvt Ltd., have also sent out a few strong messages. One- anyone can enter the field of his choice and make it to the top if he has a burning passion, even without any prior experience and two- it is the indepth understanding coming from hands on experience, not the formal educa -tion that leads an entrepreneur to success.

mail@redmagazine.in

The brothers learnt alphabets of trade in the lap of their father Mr.Xavier, who was a contractor and was a past master in building sugar fact ories. But Rajan and Ashok followed their own inclinations and stepped into building ferro alloys plants, a highly specialsed line and took up turnkey projects with various companies. Eventually, they floated their own company Sarojini Engineering Works Pvt. Limited as a proprietary concern. It is now applauded as one

www.redmagazine.in

of the leading private sector organizations in India. The firm is now run by two generations, with Rajan’s son Santosh joining it. Rajan recalls how it all started and flourished.

ENDEAVOUR By V. Sarada EXCERPTS The beginning I stepped into my father’s business along with my brother in 1985. But not satisfied with it, I started looking for greener pastures. It was Mr.CVSSRR. Raju, who directed me into this field of building furnaces for ferro alloys and under his able guidance, we started our journey. Our first project was Andhra Ferro Alloys. I am a quick learner and gained expertise. Then there was no looking back.

Meeting deadlines Generally, it takes one year to build a plant. But we built our first one within 9 months to the delight of Mr.Raju. We worked day and night and fortunately, Mr. Raghunath Raju, MD of the firm was equally motivated helped us accomplish our goal. We could win Mr.Raju’s trust. Since then we have become part of all his projects. Progression Without compromising on standards & adopting high entrepreneurial skills

and innovative strategies, we have a significant presence in the core area of Engineering, Procurement & Construction contracts. We have built 45 Ferro Alloy Plants comprising 100 furnaces and 6 Sponge iron plants of capacity 100 TPD comprising 11 kilns in India and aboard. We have a potential to fabricate around 1200 M.T of steel structures per month. We could build a package of 22.5 MVA X 8 plants for Asia's largest Ferro Alloy Plant M/s Abhijeet Group of Industries. IN FATHER'S

FOOTSTEPS

Stepping into the trade world was a natural course for the young Santosh as that was the air and environs in which he was born and brought up. He only had to follow his father’s footsteps to

Lessons from father The strong bond between my father and uncle is the key to our success. Money is transitory but it is the family that stands by you always. One important lesson I learnt from them, is never to take decisions in a bad mood.

Generation gap No, I don't feel the gap either with my father or with uncle because I know that I don’t have the experience and knowledge they posses. I believe two generations with their individual strengths can work seamlessly towards a goal. Favourite trade Whatever trade I work in, it is my favorite because I think thrice even before I start on any new business. I put in a lot of hard work & of course, I enjoy doing it. Take on Vizag Vizag is now emerging as a hub in the trade and technological fields, besides turning into a travel and leisure destination. It has attracted huge investments. Thanks to the improved connectivity and infrastructure during the past five years.

reach where he is now. But fortunately for him, his own inclinations too led him to the same path. After earning BBM and MBA degrees, he joined Sarojini Industries to share his father’s responsibilities. Very soon, he also entered the hospitality industry. Here he talks of his happy efforts.

The concept Vizag is turning into a tourism hub and there is a growing need for hospitality facilities. We have big companies like Brandix, Abhijeet Ferro Alloys running in the ITSEZ area. There are a lot of people who come here for work and need boarding and lodging facilities. This made me concept-ualize Sarojini Villa. My objective is to provide luxury rooms for ‘a feel good’ stay and A/C convention hall to hold meetings. Ours is the only villa that extends hospitality in and around Anakapalli, Atchutapuram and Elamanchali. It was designed by a young architect Joshi Raj. The Rs.10 crore-project took one full year to start functioning.

SANTOSH WITH AREA 51 Many don’t know about the original Area 51 as it operates in a remote location in Nevada, USA. Similarly, our cafe is situated in between the hills far away from the city. Area 51 suits the people who want to have a break from the daily humdrum. This idea was oated by three of us- Sai Kiran, Rajesh and me and was started it on 9th Oct 2018. There is an overwhelming response to it. Located on the hill view conventions, IT Sez, Hill No.2 Plot-F, on the way to Mouri tech, it serves continental, Mexican and Chinese cuisine. We plan to tweak the menu often enough to attract foodies. With a gaming zone in place, people can enjoy a game of snooker and Play station. Future plans We are planning to host a party on the New-Year Eve, with an exciting food menu and discounts. We also plan to expand by 2019 either on franchise mode or by opening more outlets.

WHERE

DIET DOUBLES FOR

No pharmaceutical quick fixes here. the Human body is having remarkable

recuperative powers. If left alone to attend itself, it can repair its own damages,”

affirms Dr.S.N. Murthy, Director, Bay Park by Pema Wellness. Known as “the father of

modern Naturopathy in India”, he has been curing aching bodies and ailing minds. The veteran explains unique methods he adopts to bring solace and relief to people who come

to him in distress and despair.

Excerpts We promote all-natural methods that help to maintain homeostasis in the body. Unlike in other systems which intervene in the functions of the vital organs, Nature cure detoxifies the system with different treatments and by activating the excretory organs. It does not recognise bacteria or virus as the main cause of any disease. The real culprit lies within the body in the form of morbid matter/Toxin which is accumulated either endogenously or exogenously. The development of bacteria and other disease producing organisms are attributed to the congenial atmosphere the morbidity creates. If the morbid matter is removed all the vital organs could function more efficiently than before. This is what is called “Returning to health.” Endogenous toxins are produced during the metabolic activity. Even red | july 2019 | 64

psychosomatic conditions like anger can also lead to toxic accumulation. While irregular diet produces acidic toxins in the digestive system, erratic function of the various body cells, promote acid accumulation, which manifests as inammation resulting in pain/disease. Exogenous toxins are accumulated through food, water, atmosphere and skin. For e.g., the unprocessed cosmetics may possess harmful elements like lead and mercury which can be absorbed through the skin. We are not aware in what kind of air and ambience we live in. Carbon present in automobiles and wall paints emanate poisonous gases that cause cancer, skin diseases and allergies. So, paints, smoke, atmospheric carbon, pesticides etc are some of the endogenous toxins. The accumulation of toxins crosses the threshold of the cleaning capacity of the excretory organs which affects the function of vital organs and leads to disease.

It is important to follow circadian rhythm with discipline in life, absence of which causes disturbances. Modus operandi Our therapies and in fact all NC treatments are directed to produce both thermic and circulatory reaction to clear the debris accumulated in the cells and nourish them with nutrients and oxygen to strengthen them. We use various types of Hydropathic procedures, and massages to achieve that. Physiotherapy, acupuncture, Yoga and nutrition are vital in Nature cure treatments. Hydrotherapy A simple treatment like dipping the feet in hot water for a few minutes relieves conditions like headache, chest congestions, asthma, cough or cold.

MARAUDERS OF HOPE Multi-level marketing scams (MLMs) are among the most distressing consequences of India postliberalisation. Few things trigger more pity than the tale of an illinformed yet hopeful person wrecking his hard-earned life savings on a too-good-to-be-true proposition.1990s India saw one too many of these cautionary tales, sparking the curiosity of senior journalist Aruna Ravikumar. Thus was born Marauders of Hope, a work of investigative non-fiction. Aruna launched her book at ITC Kohenur. Many eminent personalities graced the event. Andhra Pradesh, the state was a fertile plain for

ambitious businessmen who took the long view.

This was the 1980s, a period where a number of fledgling enterprises thrived, later to evolve into the well-established industrial groups of today. Among these groups was Nagarjuna Cement Limited (NCLI), which has become a giant among trade organisations in AP and Telangana. From its humble beginnings as a mini-cement plant at Mattapalli in Nalgonda (now Suryapet) District, NCLI has moved forward while making a mark for its impeccable standards for quality and competitive edge. Over the past 40 years NCLI and its sister concerns have come up with products which

RAVI OPENS NEW DOORS

By Pratika Yashaswi

Its latest offering is Duradoors, a step away from its more staid, serious days in cement manufacturing to How the idea of starting Duradoors came about? Duradoors was my idea, it's a recent development. My father always felt that we should diversify into various other building materials. He showed us the direction. He felt that India needs lots of housing, and we don't have good wood. So wood substitutes was the need. This product comprises 60% cement, and about 30 % wood. It's a good wood substitute. It has excellent qualities and it's gaining popularity in India. Basically, Duradoors is an extension of my father’s vision to truly diversify.

Opportunities for Duradoors There is a marked increase in consumer spending on construction and renovation of residential and commercial buildings. This has been a major driving force for the Indian doors market. In India, the housing section accounts for almost 5-6% of Indian GDP. This represents an incredible opportunity & a clear roadmap ahead for Duradoor. Today, when builders, homeowners or architects are on the lookout for doors, they go through a four-step process: they have to re-install the frame around the door opening,

make an ‘entry’ into the world of interiors (pun intended!) Duradoors is manufactured at a state of the art ready-made doors plant, and its contemporary designs and the quality of work is drawing the attention of leading builders and architects of the country. red was lucky to be able to get a sliver of time to have a chat with Managing Director Mr.K.Ravi, to talk to us a bit about his journey, and NCL’s new product, Duradoors. On working with NCL industries during the early years. My father started this company. At that time, I was also with him. We were in chemicals, and we thought we should get into building materials. He felt that cement was the right material to venture into. The government had also announced the mini-cement policy. After completing my BE in Electrical Engineering and studying Cement technology, I assisted him in the running of this business. In 2003 he retired and I took over the reins.

As her reputation for creating unique, simple yet sophisticated outfits gained ground, she decided to take the entrepreneurial route. She started Athira’s, a workshop and space where she produces her customers’ ideas. Since then, it has been one long rollercoaster, where she held on through sheer passion and classic determination. Advice to young women If you enjoy doing something, just stick to it and do everything to fight for who you are. A woman must work for her

years because coming up in a market that was already saturated with competition, and attracting new customers with established loyalties was not easy. But we did get through, me and my staff together. Why I Work It was not easy for me to get here, because it was difficult for my family to accept my work. People believe that a woman should not have to work unless there's a financial crunch. They would ask, "Why do you have to do this work? Why don't you stay home and take care of the kids?" But this was something I needed to do for myself, and my self esteem. It is not about people accepting my choice, or even about success. I just want to be good at something of my own, that doesn't have to be attached to my role in my family or as a mother. I wanted recognition for myself, and I wanted the happiness and pride of making something of myself. I am providing employment to nearly 15 people and I have managed this business for this long, that itself is the satisfaction and the boost I need.

independence, not financially, not just as a personality. but to help herself connect with her inner herself. It will give her happiness. I never really knew exactly what I wanted to do. I was not being myself, before Athira's. I was not doing what I was meant to do. Once I found this, I stuck to it no matter what, through the fights, the financial crunches, the ups and downs. Passion is the most important. Favourite fabric For everyday wear, my answer will always be handloom cotton. Preferably plain, or with minimal prints. As for wedding wear, pattus for sure. For other occasions, I love plain and classy georgettes.

Favourite pattern: Kalamkari. The best way to wear a dupatta: One side. Fashion philosophy in one sentence: Keep it simple, but turn heads. Saris are: Elegant! | Favourite designer: Sabyasachi

HER THOUGHTS: *

More than amboyant colours and patterns, I prefer handiwork. The meticulous effort and labour that goes into just making something as simple as a ower, I enjoy that process whether on westerns or Indian wear.

*

It’s not that you are lost without work, but the happiness of doing something you love is entirely different.

*

I love travelling with my friends. We are always exploring and trying everything, the food, the culture of a place. It is a big stress-reliever, when I'm not thinking about work.

Vision for Athira’s in 10 years Most of what I do now has been for my customers.

www.redmagazine.in

nort has been applauded as a hep and happening location in Hitech City, Hyderabad since its launch on June 29th last year. The swanky nightclub oozes world-class luxe, even as its menu, with items such as Palakoora Pappu and Dum Biryani, come close to home. As soon as you enter, one takes in an airy, open space with decor of a predominantly tropical theme: Spanish-style cabanas, palm trees and a ‘deck’ behind which is one of the largest projector screens in the city. The atmosphere and layout is welcoming, but what becomes obvious is the intentionality. It is clear that people are at the center of all the design decisions made here. The seating arrangements allow for privacy. For those who love to dance, there is a dance oor. For those who

come for a fine-dining experience with their families, there is a quieter section away from the noise of the party. Snort is packed with weekly events, offering something for everyone. Wednesdays and Thursdays are ladies night, while the weekend begins with a bang. Fridays and Saturdays at Snort have seen famous DJs such as Gajendar Varma, DJ Nyk, DJ Lloyd, and DJ Lemon.

Sundays are reserved for promoting regional bands. This month will see Bollywood sensation Maninder Buttar performing live. At Snort, there’s something for everyone: from families to youngsters looking to experience the nightlife of Hyderabad. With menu of many cuisines, ourishing cocktails, and wonderful hospitality, Snort has gained a fan-following from the yuppies

working in Hitech City. Snort offers among the abundant quantities and best quality of food. A nightclub with great food? That’s a rarity & definitely deserves exploration. red got talking with owner and driving force C.Suryanath, to find out. Before Snort I have been into events for the past 15 years working on events of the scale of Sunburn. I have travelled the world, experiencing some of the best nightclubs internationally in Abu Dhabi, Amsterdam and Miami. I loved the nightlife in Amsterdam and beach parties in Miami. I always wanted to bring that experience to Hyderabad. Snort is the first nightclub I started on my own. Why call it Snort? I named the club Snort because it means to take in a big breath. It is something unique. As soon as you enter, a person should feel the atmosphere, inhale the smell of wine and food. That is my concept. People always think of the word Snort as something negative, but I want to turn it into something positive. Dream project Snort is my dream project, so I wanted it to be absolutely perfect, right from the interiors to the bar setup. I am very particular about each and every detail no matter how small from seating arrangements to the food. I wanted to distill everything I had learned or

experienced in my travels under one roof in Hyderabad. Interiors Nowhere in Hyderabad had I seen a white-themed venue, and at all the clubs I went to, somehow there was something missing. I wanted to have an open, airy club space with a white theme and a big dance oor. Hyderabad-based designer Shankar Ahuja helped me to implement my unique vision for my club. Popular dishes at snort Among its most popular dishes are the hara-bhara kebab, the malai kabab and, believe it or not, the malai broccoli. People really like malai broccoli! It is a different take. Best part of running a nightclub business The best part of what I do is the relationships. I love to make friends. My favourite thing is to sit at the club in the night, spen ding time with people. People are what makes a place tick. If you would like to spend quality time with your friends and if you appreciate great food, I shaped Snort to be that place.

A day in the life Running a nightclub, the hours are late, so my day also starts late. But mostly, I love to spend time with my family, especially my kids. Hobbies I love watching movies. Favourite artistes Jlo is my all time favourite. When it comes to Bollywood I like romantic numbers and retro music. Mantra for dealing with Competition Every club and every place is different. I just focus on my selling points and strengths rather than looking at what others are doing and competing with them. My Poison I am a scotch-lover forever, so definitely, Royal Salute on the rocks If not a nightclub owner, I would be: An actor The number one rule of fun: Live life to the fullest and do what you like and be yourself. Be proud of what you are.

What makes a good nightclub? Definitely the ambience, music and crowd. The best nightclub experience Armani Prive in Dubai and YOLO in Amsterdam. Loved it.

I LOVED THE NIGHTLIFE IN AMSTERDAM AND BEACH PARTIES IN MIAMI. I ALWAYS WANTED TO BRING THAT EXPERIENCE TO HYDERABAD. SNORT IS THE FIRST NIGHTCLUB I STARTED ON MY OWN. Shoot by Dinakar Pamu

One level is, clients can walk in and interact with our designers, architects and a whole group of production people to come up with something. We encourage them to come in, we sit in the open, we exchange thoughts and ideas, have a cup of tea. The second level is, through a digital tool in the comfort of your home called Hi In My Studio. With a oor plan, you can design your own kitchen, wardrobe, and cabinetry, in less than twenty minutes. You can document your own thought process and visualise your space. You can share this with any architect or interior designer. When you take a printout, it's a rendered image of your own, and you can use it to discuss with the designer.

Another thing we take care of is the edge-banding, what runs on the sides and edges of a counter or a door. The lifeline of any modular product is the quality of the edgeband, and ours seal the material in so well that even if you take a knife and you try to peel it off, you can't. This is the quality of our adhesives and methods. This is what makes it long-lasting. Seamless surfaces On the kitchen counters and the ooring below, there are absolutely. no joints The surface is smooth. This is because of our unique quartz-based microtopping material. It is a continuous, innovative and tactile surface that can make any space unique. It is completely ecofriendly, it can be handled with bare hands, and is totally waterproof. It comes without labels and can be applied on any surface- indoors or outdoors, kitchens or bathrooms, on glass, tile, plastic. You name it. It is a fuss-free, aesthetically app-ealing product that gives the user a lot of exibility and is easy to maintain

Design from Dialogue Clients are a big part of the design process, and we don’t follow a commercial selling cycle. Interaction happens with us at two levels.

Production at its finest Whatever is designed in the studio, we have the ability to make an exact reproduction in the factory without any human involvement. The methodology and the technology we are adopting, the kind of infrastructure we have created for factory production, they are mind blowing. They are the technologies of the future. They allow us to make solutions that are truly world-class, which our clients can enjoy for a long time.

ARTISTRY. INNOVATION. MAGIC.

The soul of great design. Good design is that which doesn't show as ‘design’. It is an extension of you. When you get a good design, you are already in love with it. It's anthropometric, it is ergonomic. It is effortless. It is easy to use, to maintain, to be around. A short person should be able to reach the highest shelf in the cupboard. We firmly believe that more people should enjoy the benefit of a great design.

Tell us about your schooling years As a student, I was very hard working. My marks were consistent. Though I never considered myself to be naturally intelligent. I was what you’d call a book worm.

What were your dreams as a youngster? Was acting a part of the plan? As a kid I just wanted to be successful. If I hadn’t become an actress, I’d be sitting by a desk, with glasses on, working on some accounts. I grew up in a humble background. So all I really wanted was to get out there and experience life in the wider public space.

Does Baby resonate with the off-screen Samantha? Baby’s character is very bubbly and active, which made it an incredible part to play. I myself

Take on Oh Baby I watched the original Korean Comedy. Something told me it has a universal appeal. I also found it to be an important film because it is about an old woman getting a shot at reliving her youth, which she couldn’t do the first time around. So the story sensitizes you to sacrifices that go behind making a living.

First mentor When I started acting, I was not serious about taking it as a career option. I stayed back as I found a mentor at the very outset. Gautham Menon, the director of my first Telugu film Ye Maya Chesave, had me totally awed. I put my faith in him and replicated each of his teachings till I perfected them.

Tollywood dream When I was in college, I started modelling for some extra pocket money; the thought of becoming an actress had never crossed my mind. But it all escalated from there.

Have you ever played a character that was extremely unlike you? Yes, that brings to mind my role in Super Deluxe. You see, while approaching or understanding a character, you tap into a part in your subconscious that resembles it and you bring it out. But in that film, specifically, I had absolutely no aspect in my subconscious, or outside, to refer to. So I think it gave me a chance to enter new territories altogether. Yes, enacting a role that’s unlike you is challenging in a way, but at this point in my acting career, I would say I want to be challenged.

am considered to be the comedienne in the family, so I had a lot of fun letting those aspects of me live vicariously through Baby. But despite being my most favourite role till date, Baby was one of the hardest too. Each day of shoot, I would exploit my potential completely before wrapping up. I extracted an incredible level of satisfaction from working in the movie, and pushing myself harder than I thought I was capable of.

On marriage and acting I was almost sure that once I get married, I would stop getting movies. I chose to get married nevertheless. Now, a couple of years down the line, I’m still working and I’m happy.

You got married to Chaitanya. How has the journey been? Marrying Chay is the best decision I’ve ever made. Even after 10 years of knowing him, my mind goes back to the Ye Maya... days and I cannot process the fact that I married him.

What roles appeal to you? There was a time when I was okay with enacting unimportant roles in big movies just because the movies were supposed to be a guaranteed hit. But I have learned that the more we, as actresses, let this prevail, the lesser likely are we to have strong female characters written into films. My new movie Oh Baby is completely centred on the journey of a female character, which is unsurprisingly harder to market than a movie with a male lead. Nevertheless, what I look for more specifically in a role is whether or not it gives me a chance to challenge myself, and learn in the process. My love for the craft, my love for storytelling as an actor, and my respect for my audience are what keeps me from signing a role only for the paycheck.

Change over the decade It takes a lot of mistakes before

On working with women People think that women have a lot of rivalries going on among them. But that is so untrue. The best part about working with women is that you can see the fire in their eyes. It is because they know what it is like to get what you want in a man’s world. In Oh Baby, most of the directorial and production team is women, so it was a wonderful experience.

On Pratyusha support Coming from a humble background, I know how it feels to be helped out in a time of need. What drives me is the joy that’s derived from helping a family. It is above all other joys.

Does being questioned on motherhood bother you? It doesn’t really. I don’t think the question is wrong as much as I think any question about choices is wrong.

After marriage I’m much stronger than the girl I was before. The realisation that I’m no longer standing solo empowers me and encourages me to take up more challenges.

Did you expect Oh Baby to be such a massive hit? It has a lot going on for it. This movie is for the women, offering a new perspective towards the generations before us- This movie is my token of gratitude for them. I also thank the audience for receiving it so well.

What is your success mantra? It has been both luck and hardwork. When luck presents me with an opportunity, I make sure to hold on to it. But at the same time, I toil constantly in order to be better and keep evolving.

Most difficult task for an actor? It might sound weird but the most difficult task for an actor is to just be. There is a sort of proficiency that comes with being able to feel the character. It requires forgetting the actor and becoming the character for that moment.

you can put a finger on what you really want. I made many. Before coming to a point where I knew what I want from myself, I lost track a number of times. That is what has changed in me as I evolved into a more confident and self-aware person.
