Hello, my name is Jonathan Huey, and I am the executive president of the student government of Red Lion Christian Academy. While we are here to learn and get an education, we also want to have fun while doing so.

In the student government, we plan out entertaining activities that promote unity among the Glasgow Family of Schools. While you will spend just a few years here, I encourage you to make the most of your time here so that it will be an unforgettable experience.

Take part in as many extracurricular activities as you can, including sports, choir, math league, etc.

Red Lion Nov. 11

Nov. 10 COMBINED WORSHIP SESSION Glasgow, Red Lion, and Tall Oaks students came together at 11:00 a.m. for a time of worship and unity at Glasgow Church.

The students were given time to get to know each other and play fun games to “break the ice.” After lunch, the sanctuary was overflowing with praises to God and a message was given by Mr. Shoenberger.

Students then loaded the buses and made their way back to school.

FIRST DAY OF WINTER SPORTS It’s that time of year again. Time to hit the gyms for sports like boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, indoor track, and introducing Red Lion’s first official wrestling team.

Beginning on November 11, the winter athletes began training and practicing for upcoming games in order to bring home many victories.

Dec. 13

Dec. 3 TALENT SHOW Another fundraiser for the senior trip to Costa Rica took place on December 3. The talent and fashion show not only raised lots of money but also gave the students a chance to show off their talents. Some of the acts included baton twirling, bluegrass music, a kung-fu demonstration, salsa dancing, and even a performance from our very own boys lacrosse team. The fashion show was also a fun aspect of the show featuring clothes by Lu La Roe.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT The Red Lion choir and band displayed their talents for family and friends on December 13.

After spending a whole semester practicing their pieces, the students enjoyed a night to show off what Mr. Nathan Giocanda had taught them. They spent the day practicing at Glasgow Church and had their final performance that night. Mr. Giocanda was recognized for his hard work and the patience it takes to teach such a challenging art.

Nov. 18 RAKE AND RUN The day before Thanksgiving has been a day that Red Lion uses to give back to the community. Grades 9-11 go into a local neighborhood to rake lawns free of charge.

The motive behind this was to show the love of Jesus by helping those who don’t have time or are physically unable to rake the leaves from their own lawns. Red Lion strives to show the community the selflessness and willing spirit God has blessed the students with.

Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery “I chose to go to the Veteran’s cemetery because my grandfather is buried there. Our group was supposed to remove flags from the graves from Veteran’s Day, but when we arrived we were told there was no work for us to do. So we went back to the school and helped Mrs. Starrett and Mrs. Pargoe with random jobs around the school.”

Jan. 17- 20 MIDTERM EXAMS A few weeks after coming back from winter break, the stress of midterms set in. Red Lion students in grades 6-12 studied everything they learned in the first semester. After Martin Luther King Day on January 16, the students came for half days the rest of the week and took two exams each day. The midterm exams marked the end of the first semester and students will receive new schedules the following week.

“Some of the seniors took a day to volunteer at the Friendship House in Wilmington. We helped by sorting, folding, and bagging clothes that had been donated.

The clothes will be given to families and communities in need. It was a blessing to help such a wonderful organization.”

Door of Hope “As a part of the group of girls that went to the Door of Hope, I helped clean the facilities and fold donated materials. Although I felt that we didn’t do much, the director was very thankful for our help and bought us a pizza as a sign of her gratitude.”

Seamen’s Center “The Center was really great. We got to pack boxes with items so that the sailors would have Christmas presents. We met a few sailors, and they were really nice.

KILLING

RECORDS Janai Gibson, a sophomore, broke the state volleyball record with 43 blocks in a season. She also lead the team to an opening state tournament victory.

Our record was 12-3 including our loss in the second round of states against Wilmington Friends. That was an awesome game, and I really enjoyed the season in general this year especially with the addition of the Tall Oaks athletes. It really did make a huge difference to have them play for our team. It was helpful to play with new girls and see how they performed on the court. They really brought a lot to the team which was extremely helpful.

I play middle blocker which gives me a lot of time on the net. Blocking is crucial to the team and basically prevents the other team from scoring. The fact that I had the most blocks is an honor. I was actually on the bus on our way to Conrad for an away game with the rest of the team when I found out that I beat the record for the most blocks. I still remember our coach coming on the bus and announcing to the team that I had beat the previous record that was held by Shelby Belk who played for the team a few years ago. My coach actually got me Dunkin Donuts as a reward.

I hold the state record with forty-three blocks this season with my highlight game being against Caravel. I had six blocks in total that game. It was just really cool especially because they have amazing hitters, and it was great dominating against such a strong team. It felt so good blocking against such great hitters.

Kana Turley was the other middle blocker who was very good. She was pretty short, not gonna lie, but she could jump high. Because she was so talented, we kind of went head to head for the record. If I had to name anyone who would’ve been my competition for the most blocks, it definitely would be Kana. Going against her made me work harder and overall play better.

During the state tournament, it was a little harder to get as many blocks as I usually do. Both teams we played against had very good hitters who knew how to hit around my blocks. So I had to make adjustments, but it was good for me to go against more challenging players.

My best advice to anyone would be to put in the work. Go to all the clinics and club tryouts. Get all the experience you can because it really does help. I really do believe the work I put in helped me in the long run.”

M M AKING HEADLINES Red Lion student Mackenzie Skelton was mentioned in Sports Illustrated Kids for her oustanding soccer skills.

Mackenzie Skelton has been playing soccer since she was seven years old and fell in love with the sport ever since. She was taught by her father, who loved to play and won several all-state titles and awards.

She started out playing for a travel soccer team, but then later began playing Red Lion middle school soccer in sixth grade. Her favorite part of the sport is running which explains why the position she plays does the most running on the field.

Sports Illustrated Kids soon reached out to the Skelton family after seeing Mackenzie’s Red Lion soccer statistics, which included eleven goals. They asked her father to send in a headshot and said the magazine would contact them as soon as they decided which athlete deserved the spot. They received news a few weeks later from the magazine that she had won. Sports Illustrated Kids sent a huge email to Mackenzie’s father explaining that she would be mentioned in the magazine.

She has a copy of the page from the magazine framed and hung up in her room.

She continues to play travel soccer all year round and indoor soccer through the winter. Mackenzie plans on playing soccer throughout high school and maybe even after.

I

n the afternoon of just about any given day, Tall Oaks junior Hannah Jo can likely be found practicing her jumps out on the ice, working out in the gym, or hanging out with some of the other skaters at the University of Delaware ice arena. Hannah is currently in the midst of balancing intense training in figure skating with a full high school course load.

“I started [skating] when I was seven years old at a summer camp. I learned to skate that winter, and it just went on from there. So I’ve been skating for seven years now; this winter is my seventh year skating,” says Hannah, who has attended Tall Oaks since second grade. “Currently, I leave school every day at 12:50 after lunch, and I’ve been doing that, missing some classes, for three or four years now. I’ve managed to make up my classes outside of the normal school schedule with my teachers, and they’re really great. They’ve been super supportive and we’ve gotten it to work every year. And definitely I have less time to do homework since I’m training, but I have managed to make that work until now, although junior year is the hardest.”

Hannah skates at the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club along with a group of nationally ranked skaters. “The great thing about where I train is that there isn’t a lot of drama because within rinks there can be a lot of competitiveness. But within our rink we all have the same coaches, so we’ve formed a great bond and a great connection, and we’re always there to cheer each other up. It’s a great place to skate.”

“I think every skater is admirable for having stayed in the sport, and every skater who is considered as doing well is great, and you realize how hard it is. In any sport really, any athlete who has gone through a lot, you have to respect that and look up to them.”

Hannah qualified for the 2014 U. S. Figure Skating National Championships as a Juvenile girl, having won second place at both Regionals and Sectionals. In 2015, she placed first at Regionals at the Intermediate level, and in 2016, she won second place at Regionals as a Novice and seventh at Sectionals. This year, she once again placed second at Regionals and sixth at Sectionals at the Novice level.

However, Hannah considers her most significant skating achievement to be “just having persevered in the sport, having continued and not given up, day to day going to training.”

“I definitely enjoy the performing aspect of [skating] and the athleticism, the jumps and how challenging it is, and the speed of when you’re on the ice, that feeling of freedom. [Performing] is hard, a lot of nerves of course when you’re out on the ice by yourself, and it definitely takes a lot of mental strength, which I’m

working on and every athlete is working on, but I do enjoy it. I like doing jumps.

Other people like doing spins or something else, but my favorite is the triple lutz.

Though [skating] is a very expensive and time-consuming sport that takes a lot of dedication, as all sports do, it brings together dance and gymnastics and this new idea of being able to glide across ice, a different medium than any other sport.”

Hannah’s next competition will be the May Day Open 2017 in Maryland. “In skating, you have two programs, a short program and a long program. My short program is tango/gypsy themed music, so my dress is a bright red with black fishnet and crystals, and my long program is from Respighi, Pines of Rome and Roman Festivals, and the music is very powerful and triumphant at the end. My dress is ivory with gold, silver, and white crystals. All my costumes are made by my mom, and I like all of them equally. My coach choreographs all of my programs.”

Besides skating, Hannah has a passion for learning. “My favorite class is science, any science class, and…all my classes! [Tall Oaks] has been a great experience. I love this school because there’s such a great sense of community, and my friends here are like my family. I just love being at school. A lot of people think of school as being boring or dreary, but with our class, I think every day is fun.

“I do want to go to college. I want to do something in agriculture, preferably horticulture or something with plant breeding. I like working with plants. I love gardening; we’ve always had a big garden since I was little. I love being outside and exploring all the plants. We’re called to be creators as part of God’s creation, and we’re called to be artists. Breeding plants, as funny as that sounds, is creating new plants in a sense, and improving the diversity of what we have around us is something I think is really cool, and something very important to maintaining our environment.”

Hannah would like to continue skating as long as possible. “I plan on graduating high school in 2018, and I plan to defer a year for skating before I go into college, and once I am in college, skating is not a collegiate sport. It’s a club that you can form, so I’d just be skating for fun and possibly coaching alongside whatever career path I decide to take.

“People think going to the rink every day is dreary and boring, and sometimes it is. I do feel lazy at times, but once I get there and I’m on the ice, every day is a good memory.”

“I skate because I love it. I feel free when I’m on the ice, and I love all the challenges that it brings to me, and all the great people I get to meet.”

Glasgow Christian Academy teacher Mr. Brian Hilyard sat down for an in-depth discussion of history, hair, and life’s ups and downs. here is no question that Mr. Brian Hilyard is one of the most beloved teachers at Glasgow Christian Academy. To his students, he is a funloving, kind, considerate role model.

To his colleagues, he is an intelligent, intricate working machine (with great hair).

The GCA magazine staff recently sat down with this history buff to get to know the man behind the wooden desk. Rumors circulated of this mythical teacher with long hair and a great personality, but no such teacher could possibly exist. Oh, but he is very real and very cool.

The interview took place in the empty nursery room in the downstairs hallway. It was very cold, and smelled pretty bad, as nurseries sometimes do. The interview started with some easy, tame questions like

for Mr. Hilyard because he felt his father was sometimes a little hard on him. Later, when he was old enough to go out on his own, he made some bad decisions. He said he had fun, but it really wasn’t good in the end.

He said a turning point was when he met with Pastor Dan Betters, and Dan helped him discover his faith in a more meaningful way.

He lived happily for a few years, meeting the love of his life and her son. All was well until disaster struck, and his father unexpectedly passed away. His father was a beloved history teacher at GCA. Shortly after his dad passed away, Mr. Hilyard was asked to take over his dad’s job. To say he was taken aback would be an understatement.

He realized that a lot of the GCA kids already knew him, because he visited his father so much. After much prayer, he decided to take up the job and has been teaching happily ever since, much to the delight of his students. He said he tried to be as real as possible in and out of school. His in-depth knowledge of history makes him a good teacher. His genuine approach to teaching and interacting with his students is what makes him great. Being a Civil War buff allows him to convey a passion for history that grabs his students’ attention from word one. He is one of the smartest, funniest, most charismatic teachers, and he is as real as can be. This is why Mr. Hilyard is one of the coolest teachers at GCA. This statement is echoed by all of Mr. Hilyard’s students, past and present. Future students will benefit from his knowledge, humor, and general coolness.

Mr. Hilyard has quite a history, but his teaching at GCA has quite a future.

“What hobbies do you have outside of school?” Then the questions became more personal. Throughout the interview, Mr. Hilyard was the kind of person someone would want to listen to. His stories read like a good book, bringing tears and wanting to hear more. He has the perfect mix of comedy and drama to write a good story.

At the beginning of his story, a young Brian Hilyard had a father who always drove him to do his best and follow God. Mr. Hilyard said his father was always, “either his principal or his pastor.” This was sometimes a problem

DAQUAN GIBSON IS A FATHER TO FEW, PREACHER AND TEACHER TO MANY. Doing three things at once is hard as a

human being; but when you are called by God to start a ministry in a church, teach children the gospel, and have a family, that must be a difficult task. Mr. DaQuan Gibson, day in and day out, balances all three of these responsibilities.

In 2013, Red Lion’s school principal at the time, Mr. Dorsey, was good friends with Gibson. Mr. Gibson was talking to Mr. Dorsey about being a principal for Glasgow Christian Academy and Red Lion Christian Academy. One day Mr. Gibson was asked to tour Red Lion. Without even knowing, the tour of the school turned into an interview for a job. Soon, Mr. Gibson was offered a position at the school.

Mr. Gibson said in the interview, that if he were to get this job, it was God calling him to the ministry.

Pastor Chuck H. Betters said, “We have a sanctuary here that is not being used; consider it [the building] to begin a church.” Pastor Betters said that was God showing Mr. Gibson that there should be no excuses in starting a church because God has provided it for him.

“I had known for a while that the Lord was pushing me towards the ministry,” Mr. Gibson explained. The start of a church was something that he knew he had to do, but he was not sure if he was cut out for the job. Speaking to God, he said, “If you are going to provide me a church, you are going to have to take full control and do everything in building the church.”

Fast-forwarding to 2017, Mr. Gibson is now the pastor of Redemption Church and the head of the

Bible department at RLCA. Although these two things sound like they go hand in hand, they really do not. Being the head of the Bible department, involves teaching classes, developing lesson plans, and counseling people who attend the school. As a pastor of the church, he has to prepare for his ordination and sermons. “They are two different worlds,” he explained.

Mr. Gibson is the father of three children and a husband to his wife Bayyinah Gibson. Though his life may be crazy outside of home, he always has the same people to come back to after work. “I have committed myself to not trying to balance being a husband and a father with everything else. Being a husband and a father should come first before anything else.”

With all the things going on his life, he makes it clear to his family and the congregation that nothing comes before his family. “If anything were to interrupt my marriage or being a father, that interruption will have to go,” he stressed. Home is his first priority.

Being a father is the main job he has.

Depending on God to be faithful is a hard task for anyone, especially if one has a lot of responsibilities.

“Having much to do is the Lord showing Himself faithful. Having much to do to serve the Lord is an amazing opportunity. I depend on his grace to uphold me,” he stated. Through many responsibilities, DaQuan Gibson somehow keeps sane. With God on his side, he proves that one life can do a lot for the Lord through being a father, teacher and a pastor.

HOUSE GAMES

I

n October, the House of Edwards took second place after defeating the House of Wilberforce and losing a hard-fought battle against the House of Kuyper. In the kickball tournament on the last day of the first semester, Edwards lost to Kepler in the first round. Later, they defeated Kuyper in the consolation match and took third place.

“I love being a part of the House of Edwards. Not only do I love the people in my house, but I feel as though we all have the same mind-set. We are determined to do our best and to stay encouraged.

When it all comes down to it, that’s what we want: to have fun together,” said Rebekah Orlando, senior house representative.

Senior Sophia Schmiedel echoes her: “The members of the House of Edwards work very well together when we have competitions against the other houses.

We act as a team and encourage one another to do our best. Our ultimate goal is to have fun. As a senior in the House of Edwards, I try to emphasize that with each activity we do. We should strive to do our best as unto the Lord. In the end, it doesn’t matter if we win or lose; as long as we do our best and glorify God, that’s all I can ask for.”

ion & Cub is a newly instituted program within the House of Edwards in which each student is assigned another house member of a significantly different age. Students then decorate their “Lion’s” or “Cub’s” locker and seek to encourage them in different ways throughout the year. This program reflects the purpose of the house system: to bring together older and younger students and build relationships between students of varying ages and grade levels. “Because the house system spans grades six to twelve, I am able to talk with kids from ages eleven and up. It is fun and encouraging as a senior to see what an impact I can make on the lives of the younger children in my house. I think this goes for the other houses as well; seniors really enjoy getting to know kids from younger grades and sharing our knowledge and experiences with them,” said Sophia Schmiedel, a senior from the House of Edwards.

On November 21, the members of the House of Edwards gathered at Emmanuel Dining Room in the city of Wilmington to complete their annual service project. Along with other groups of volunteers, they were able to pack over three hundred Thanksgiving meal kits, containing everything from mashed potatoes to cranberry sauce to distribute to local families in need. “House service projects are important because they build unity among the students in the House as we work together to glorify God. I think this particular project was a good service project because I know that it helped to bring joy to families in need as they celebrated Thanksgiving,” said seventh grader Kiersten Mengel, junior House representative.

HISTORY

This quote is attributed to the famed Puritan theologian and preacher Jonathan Edwards, who lived in Massachusetts during the First Great Awakening in the 18th century, and he is today best known for his powerful sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” The House of Edwards, named for this great apologist, is comprised of twenty-six students from grades 6-12. Have you ever wanted to travel halfway across the world, or see lions in their natural habitat? Have you ever wanted to spread the word of Jesus to people who had never heard it before? Quentin Fleetwood, a senior at Glasgow Christian Academy, did all of these things and more over his summer break. He saw various fascinating people and places, and he can’t wait to share them with you. A couple things he learned were that some cultures do not know how to drive well and those same cultures could teach us a thing or two about loving Jesus.

Quentin and his fellow peers from Glasgow Church traveled to Nairobi, on the East coast of Africa, to help improve and assist the people of Happy Life Children’s Home. The flight there lasted around twenty hours. There were about 100 kids between the two Happy Life locations.

The weather felt amazing, around the low 70’s, so that helped immensely when working on painting the facilities and grounds keeping. He especially enjoyed playing with the children. Some of the games involved rolling a tire with a stick for what seemed like miles.

During the visit, Quentin had the opportunity to photograph and film behind the scenes of Happy Life. Under the direction of GCA Media Arts teacher Mrs. Hawkins, Quentin was able to interview Kenyan directors, Pastor Peter and his wife Faith, along with U.S. directors, Jim and Sharon Powell. A behind the scenes look gave Quentin insight to how Happy Life runs and the passion driving all of its volunteers and staff.

Quentin was very fond of a little boy named Zephan. In addition, he loved hearing the children talk about their different countries and vice versa. After the amazing experience with the children the group was also able to go on safari. This was an incredible day trip on a day with blue skies and breezes.

Quentin said, “The animals were almost as excited to see us as we were them. They seemed to want to show off and it was quite a show.”

Where did you go on this mission trip?

I went to Nairobi, Kenya with Reach Youth Group to Happy Life Children’s Home.

How was the weather?

It was very nice around in the 70’s with a lot of sun, which they considered to be chilly. Go figure.

How long was the flight?

It took around about 20 hours.

What was your favorite experience there?

Hanging out with the kids and seeing the kids smile when we talk about each of our countries. The bus ride between orphanages was pretty interesting. Let’s just say we were happy there were cushions on the seats.

How long did you stay?

We stayed for one week, with three days of travel time.

How many kids are there?

There were about 100 all together.

Was this your first ever mission trip?

Yes, it was actually my first mission trip.

Did you have a child you bonded with?

Yes, his name was Zephan. He liked to pee on everyone, but that’s not why I liked him!

What were some of the activities you did with the children?

We would use a stick and tire and roll it around for miles. In additions, there was a sheep we captured in the school.

Did you do any hard work there?

The main work we did was painting the school and we moved a rather large pile of sticks from one spot to another.

How was the lodging conditions there?

We had these units called houses and each house had a mother and she was responsible in keeping up with the house and the children that lived with her. There were small rooms with bunkbeds, usually 8 per room.

Did you learn anything new about their native culture?

Nope, I already knew a ton about their culture, except for their driving habits. That was unexpected.

How did God move you spiritually there?

God showed me that even though they have nothing, they are the happiest people in the world. They smile whenever you see them and if there is a minor car accident, there is no animosity between all of them.

They simply ask if they are all right, and they reply back “Sawa Sawa,” which means Ok, Ok, usually with a thumbs up.

Would you like to attend another mission trip?

Oh, yeah!!

nicaragua The mission for Faith Foresta was to build a school in Los Brasiles, Nicaragua.

She also was able to share the gospel with the school children.

Why did you go?

I went to work on a school that was being built there.

On a peninsula in the southwest of Nicaragua, there is a small town called Los Brasiles. It’s a very poor town, full of very religious, working class people.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t a school in the town until last summer. Faith Foresta, a senior at Glasgow Christian Academy, was there to help with the building.

Who did you go with?

I went with my church, First Baptist Church in New Castle.

What did you do while you were there?

I helped paint the school, assisted with the children, and cut wires to protect trees around the grounds.

Where there any memorable people?

I met a little girl who lived next door, and I gave her a granola bar as a gift. In return, she brought me small gifts every day after that. We traveled across Nicaragua quite a bit. At one point we even visited an active volcano, Mount Masaya. We got to visit many different parts of the country.

What was your favorite memory?

When I was face-painting the small children.

What did you learn in general?

I learned a lot of things about Nicaragua, including how beautiful it is.

What did this trip teach you about Christ?

I’ve noticed that the less people have, besides Christ, the closer they actually are to Him. Would you go again?

Oh yeah, absolutely. I’m already planning on raising money to go back.

Was is fun, exhausting, both?

Yeah, it was fun, and a little difficult, definitely exhausting, but worth it.

What were the people like?

It wasn’t what I expected at all. Most of the people there were very poor.

Did you like them?

Yes. They didn’t have much, but they were the happiest people I’ve ever met.

“My knee gave out,” Taylor Wright explained. On April 11, Taylor was playing in a lacrosse game against Indian River. What seemed to be a regular game turned into a life changing one when she planted her foot, tearing her anterior cruciate ligament or ACL. She went for a ground ball and had a girl from the opposing team right on her trail.

Taylor went to turn around, but she planted her foot before she moved. She heard a cracking sound in her leg, and her immediate response was to freak out from the pain and the sound of the injury. Her fellow players tried to get her to calm down. The trainer, Alyssa Stonkous, began to ask her questions about what had happened and what she was feeling. Alyssa ended up putting Taylor’s leg in an air cast and getting her off the field in her golf cart.

When she went to the doctor, they performed X-rays on her leg to see what was wrong. At first, they did not know what was wrong; however, when they referred her to a sports medicine doctor, Dr. Handling, he found that it was a torn ACL. “When he told me that I tore it, I started to cry because I knew I would not able to do anything.”

Before the surgery, she was not nervous, yet on the day of the surgery, she felt the angst and worry.

Physical Therapy (PT) was the next step in her recovery, and she started to go everyday to ATI Physical Therapy. As months went by, she had to go less and less, leading up to only going once a month.

She said that her leg still gets “caught” and PT is still not pleasant sometimes. She had become very eager to join sports again. Taylor is ready to play lacrosse this spring.

“Tearing my ACL made me look into other hobbies,” she said. Besides focusing on school, she began to find new things to occupy her time instead of sports. She never thought it would happen to her, but she found that she was able to connect and grow closer to her other friends in her class, including Emily Skelton and Bria Dickerson, who had also torn their ACLs. She said their relationship grew stronger because of what she went through.

“I knew this happened for a reason,” she said. “I think it was sign from God showing me that I should focus more on Him and also focus more on school.”

She learned that not everything is about sports and that God should be the most important thing in her life. This journey helped her to realize that He is the only thing that stays the same, unlike a sports career.

The stands were filled with parents and fans on January 9, 2016, at the Lady Lion’s basketball home game against Christiana High School. The girls were ready and excited to play this game as it was a big event that happens every season. It was during the game when Bria jumped up to block an attempted shot and fell and tore her ACL. She was dribbling the ball up the court when a girl from the other team stole it from her. She hustled to get back on defense, she jumped up to block the shot and she came back down and landed on her right knee and felt a stinging pain. The landing was not a pleasant one, and it became even more unpleasant when she lay on the ground, and she realized that she could not get up or bend her knee. She recovered from the fall and Alyssa Stonkous, the Red Lion athletic trainer, took her back to her room to get checked out. “I remember saying to Alyssa, ‘as long as I don’t need surgery, I am fine.’ Which is very ironic.”

Later, after the game, she walked to her car.

Suddenly, found that she could not walk anymore.

Her knee had swollen so much that she was unable to walk. That following Monday she saw a doctor and began to walk on crutches for a while until more tests could be done. An MRI confirmed that she needed surgery for her torn ACL. “I was not nervous because I had been through it before with having another surgery.”

However, as time went on, her leg problem became more serious, and it interfered with her daily activities.

Fears began to surface about the eventual prognosis and future use of Bria’s leg. The surgery took place on January 19, 2016. With the support of her family and her friends, she made it through surgery and recovery just fine. “My family and my friends were a very important piece to recovery. Without them, I would have been lost,” she explained.

Recovering from her injured right leg was a big part of her life for about a year. This process included a lot of physical work that was needed to get the right leg’s quad muscle back up to full strength. “The hardest part of the recovery program was jumping and getting enough force to jump up and then landing the right way.”

“Tearing my ACL has been a very important part of my life. It taught me to do other things, to depend on others, and most importantly, depend on God,” she said. “It is just unfortunate that I had to learn through injuring myself,” she laughed. “But I would not have it any other way.”

It was a rainy day on April 22, 2015, when Emily Skelton was playing in a soccer game against Wilmington Christian. “Someone is going to get hurt.

They need to cancel the game,” Mrs. Norris had said earlier, foreshadowing the whole day for Emily.

Emily was running down the field trying to overtake a girl from the other team that had the ball and her foot slipped on the wet turf. She tried to plant her foot to recover from the slip, but then she heard a “pop.” After that nasty sound, she could not feel her leg anymore. She believed that she blacked out after the “pop”. The game did not stop around her as the referee did not see her fall. She got back up off the turf, and the referee finally saw her and called over the athletic trainer, Jill Warner, and her coach, Mr. Ronnie Cheadle. He carried her off the field.

She went to the ER that night, and they performed X-rays on her leg. Nothing was broken so a follow up appointment was scheduled for an MRI. A week later, the doctor told her that, sadly, she had torn her ACL and her meniscus. Before the team went to leave for their early dismissal that day, Emily remembered that Mrs. Norris gave a foreshadowing warning that the game should have been cancelled because of the rain. She struggled with the fact that she was injured as badly as she was. Everyone told her that it was not going to be anything. Therefore, when the doctor told her she had torn her ACL on Thursday, it was tough news to swallow.

Physical therapy (PT) was hard for her. The exercises pushed her limits. She had to make herself do things that she never thought possible. None of this deterred Emily. When she went through this experience, she made many friends at ATI, who had become like family. They even threw her a celebration when she completed her recovery.

“I did not understand why God would let this happen to me,” she explained. “I questioned God as to why, and I just did not understand. But a week later, I had to learn how to give my problem to Him and it felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. Even through the trials I had to trust Him and lean on Him for trust.”

“I know now why God put me through this, because a couple of months later Bria tore her ACL and then Taylor tore hers, so I was able to help them with the process of recovering from an ACL injury along with two other people from her church.”

“I have spent kindergarten to twelfth grade at Tall Oaks and am extremely grateful for it.

This school has not only given me a top notch education but helped nurture my faith, allowing me to grow as a person and as a Christian. I have made friends at this school that have been there for me through thick and thin, even when I’m annoying or irritating. They are by far the best part of this school for me. I would not be the man I am today without them. The culture is unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. The faculty wants to help you with your struggles and genuinely cares for your well-being. In my thirteen years at Tall Oaks, I have found that however much the school may change faculty and location-wise, the culture does not. It remains firm in its principles. I have learned so much from the years spent here.”

Senior Year

“Senior year has been a tad stressful, with applying to colleges and the SAT. I also have to prepare to audition pieces for the theater schools that I have to audition for. But there have been some bright moments this year. I have had some fun get togethers with friends, did a service project with my House, and I’m currently doing the musical at Red Lion. The work load can get to be a lot, but knowing that God will provide for me whatever I do and whatever happens has been extremely comforting. I will miss my friends when I leave for college, but I cannot wait to see what God has in store for me in the future.”

“This year I was not only the Chair of the House of Edwards but the leader of the Christian Service Brigade. With these leadership positions, I hope to leave behind a legacy of Christ kingship in all things. My job as a leader in these positions is to help the students younger than I am with their problems and lead them to a deeper relationship with Christ. The legacy I hope to leave behind is one of a person who tried to do all things for the glory of God and called others to do that as well. If I can leave a legacy like that, then I’ve done all right.”

Theater

“I have been involved with theater since the seventh grade. It has been a big part of my life and something I hope to pursue as a career in college. My first ever big stage production I did was Sideways Stories From Wayside School. This is a hobby that took up most of my free time during high school, but was totally worth it. I met some great people and have been in some fantastic shows. Two of my favorite are It’s A Wonderful Life at the Chapel Street Players and And A Child Shall Lead at the Everett Theater. In It’s A Wonderful Life, I played young George Bailey and Pete Bailey. It was one of the best casts I’ve worked with and a great experience. And A Child Shall Lead was about children in a concentration camp during World War II. It was very taxing as an actor, but it was great to be able to show people what

rs. Noel Gasorek is a Glasgow Christian Academy teacher currently co-teaching at Journey Christian Academy, a branch of GCA and the Glasgow Family of Schools. She is devoted to helping kids with special needs learn in a safe and stimulating setting. Journey began two years ago with just six teachers and five kids. The school now has eight teachers, nine students, and they continue to grow. Journey provides all core subjects such as math, science, language arts, history, and Bible. Journey also provides their students with classes in music, art, martial arts, field trips, social skills, and gym.

In two short years, Journey has become a force of its own with growing interest, a waiting list, and plans for expansion. Journey is establishing itself as a unique partnership between parents and teachers. This homeschool and traditional combination of educating special needs children has become a model for other programs and, with its rapid success, will no doubt be impacting special needs children and their families for many years to come.

In addition to Journey, Mrs. Gasoreck has been teaching at GCA for six years, two of which have been with the Journey students. She is the mother of two boys, one enrolled in Tall Oaks, and the other enrolled at Journey Christian Academy.

Enthusiastic, encouraging, and a natural educator, Mrs. Noel Gasorek is a blessing to everyone at GCA, whether to the students she teaches or those she interacts with outside of the classroom. She was asked,“If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?” “Oh, Isaiah… somewhere really cold,” Mrs. Gasorek replied with a big smile. Though Mrs. Gasorek said she would like to go somewhere cold, she has actually ended up on a path to somewhere far warmer than she imagined. She has taken this special journey with her students and her destination is their hearts.

Of the classes you have taught, which has been your favorite?

Ummm… well, I’d have to say science. Science has been my favorite class to teach.

On the more fun side, if you could have one super power, what would it be?

Invisibility would be my super power.

If you could live in any other era, what would it be, and why?

Probably the time when Jesus was alive on earth would be the era I’d like to live.

How did you get involved in the Journey?

I got involved in Journey when the program first started. I was asked if I’d like to jump on board, and I said yes. I was very interested.

What is your favorite part about working in the Journey program?

My favorite part is just being with the kids, teaching the kids, and working with the kids.

Have there been any other classes you have taught at GCA? I taught science for several years. I also taught a kindergarten reading class, and… I think that’s it. Just those two classes. www.glasgowfamily.com

ohnny Merigala, a junior, and his brother Jasper, an eighth grader, help lead Red Lion students in worship every day during morning devotions. They have been here for years, but just started sharing their musical gift with students last year. Jasper leads on his guitar in the morning, his older brother Johnny plays the drums right beside him. The Band Brothers answer a few questions for One Spirit magazine.

How did you get involved in worship team?

What is your favorite part of the band?

Johnny “One day, Mrs. Reed texted me all of a sudden and was like, ‘Could you play drums?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, sure.’ She also asked Jasper if he could play guitar and so then we just started playing for a while.”

Johnny “Playing the drums is my favorite because I love playing my drums, but also leading people in worship. That’s something I have always wanted to do, and I got the opportunity to do so here at Red Lion.”

How long have you played guitar?

Jasper “I have played the guitar for about five years now, since I was seven. I took lessons for the first year, and the next four I just played on my own.”

How long have you been playing drums?

Johnny “I’ve played drums for about two and a half years now. I took lessons for about five months and then continued learning on my own. I play mostly at my church and at other special events. Worship team is just another way I can use the gifts God gave me.”

Jasper “I basically just enjoy playing my guitar.

I was really nervous when I first started, but I really have fun doing it now and plan to continue worship team into high school.”

Is it difficult to balance the band and school?

Johnny “No, not really. The hardest part is waking up early to go to rehearsal before school.”

Jasper “Not really. It’s just getting up an hour earlier than usual is kind of hard sometimes, but that’s really it.”

Jasper Merigala plays guitar for the worship team in one of the daily chapel services at Red Lion. Jasper is an eighth grader and began playing for the worship team last year.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Jasper “Well, I like to play sports. I play football and basketball. They are my favorites.”

What are some of your hobbies?

Johnny “When I’m not studying or practicing for worship team, I enjoy playing the piano. And sometimes, if I want to relax, I’ll play video games with my brother.”

Playing drums for the worship team is something that Johnny Merigala can do to use his musical talents to glorify God. Johnny is in eleventh grade and has been playing drums for just over two years. He and his brother Jasper also play on the worship team at their church where their father is the pastor.

Originally from the Midwest, Dr. Mark Reagan brings his musical talents to Tall Oaks Classical School with the intention of growing an already established program.

This summer, Tall Oaks Classical School welcomed Dr. Mark Reagan to its staff as a new upper school teacher. Dr. Reagan took over the role of upper school music teacher and recently directed his first Christmas concert for Tall Oaks in December. He is also currently teaching 7th, 10th, and 11th grade literature and 12th grade rhetoric, and supervising the senior class as they prepare to give their thesis presentations in May. Dr. Reagan describes himself as a “Midwesterner,” spending his childhood in Michigan before attending Taylor University in Indiana. After college, he briefly returned to Michigan for graduate school at Michigan State University, and later moved to Moscow, Idaho, where he met his wife in 2004 and married her two years later. Since then, Dr. Reagan has moved around quite a bit. “I moved to Iowa, then Virginia, then here,” he said. “Those last three transitions have happened pretty quickly over the past few years.”

Dr. Reagan’s main passion is music, and some of the pieces performed at this year’s Christmas concert were his own arrangements. “My background initially was as a composer; composition is what I studied as an undergraduate. Growing up, I thought this would be an interesting thing to do because I didn’t know a lot of people who were writing music, so I majored in it. Later on, I took on more of a leadership role, directing groups and particularly church choirs. But I still love to compose.

When I’m putting together a concert, if I see there’s a gap, it’s a skill I can fall back on to find just the right piece to fit in there, either by composing it brand new or just working up an arrangement.”

Even so, Dr. Reagan is doing more than just music, and teaching literature and rhetoric. He also stays busy raising three children all under the age of five, including his oldest, Claude, who is attending preschool at Red Lion. “I’ve enjoyed being here; I’ve been busy teaching not necessarily ‘new’ classes but a wide range of classes I haven’t yet taught at this level. It’s been fun and challenging trying to manage life at the school with my home life.”

While living in Moscow, Dr. Reagan also worked with Douglas Wilson, a familiar name in classical education circles, who serves on the governing boards of New Saint Andrews College, Logos School, and the Association of Classical and Christian Schools (ACCS). “He’s a really great guy because he’s a careful thinker. He’s been a big voice in classical education and reviving it over the last 30 years. He’s not only trying to get other people to join the movement, he’s also living it out himself.” Dr. Reagan also noted that while Wilson is primarily an expert in rhetoric, his commitment to classical education allows him to speak convincingly about many other aspects of the movement as well.

Now, in his latest endeavor, Dr. Reagan is returning to his musical roots. “I came to Tall Oaks because Dr. Dernlan specifically was interested in having me help boost the music program and establish a strong foundation to develop over the coming years. I was working at a much smaller school and doing some musical things, but I hadn’t had the chance to expand [the program]. I think that here I will have that chance because we do a lot of music here. The students are singing every day, [not just in] music classes but also in theology and literature classes and others. I’m trying to take some of that excitement and enthusiasm and raise it to a higher aesthetic level.”

Once a Lion Always a Lion After spending his whole childhood attending school at Red Lion Christian Academy, Mr. Ronnie Cheadle came back to teach the next generation of students.

Mr. Ronnie Cheadle began attending school at Red Lion Christian Academy in 1988, when he began preschool. He attended Red Lion all the way through twelfth grade when he graduated in 2002. Mr. Cheadle said that it was a lot different when he went here than it is now. “When I was first here, the school only went up to eighth grade. The upper school building we are currently in didn’t exist and neither did the Early Education Center. The only buildings that were here were the lower school gym, the sanctuary, and all the classrooms in what is now Tall Oaks. That’s it.

There was no stadium, there was no turf field, and there was no Lion’s Den. None of that was here. Our soccer field was just a nice grass field in the back.”

Mr. Cheadle was a student in the first senior class to graduate from Red Lion. We have Spirit Week now, but there wasn’t always a week where the upperclassmen would battle against each other for the spirit stick. “When we were in eighth grade, they added on grades. The next year they added on ninth grade so we were the highest grade.

Then the next year they added tenth grade, eleventh, and twelfth. So basically I was a senior for five years, because I was always in the highest grade, so I never had to deal with the underclassman stuff because I was never the underclassmen.” While Mr. Cheadle was working his way up to senior year, there was no one above him to have competitions with. Even though they didn’t have a whole week dedicated to competing, they did have dress up days, pep rallies, and other things like that he enjoyed going to.

All throughout middle school and high school, Mr. Cheadle played soccer, basketball, and baseball. “As far as

sports stuff goes, my senior year was the best year because we made the state tournament in soccer and basketball. Unfortunately, we lost in the first round both times, but it was fun because it was the first time the soccer and basketball team made it to the state tournament. Our varsity program had only existed for about two years, at that time, so to even get in the tournament in that short of time was pretty exciting.”

The plan wasn’t always to come back and teach here at Red Lion, or anywhere else. “I graduated here in 2002 and then went to the University of Delaware where my major was originally just straight chemistry, thinking I would just go into the industry and work in a lab somewhere and do research or something along those lines. Then about halfway through college, I was a workshop leader from one of the lower chemistry classes that I had already taken, helping students with that kind of stuff, and I liked it. The chemistry class that I was taking didn’t interest me as much as the earlier one. So I looked into Chemistry Education, and then changed my major to that about halfway through college.”

After Mr. Cheadle finished college, he taught at Smyrna High School for one year. Then he made his way to Wilmington Christian and taught there for three years. He made his way back to Red Lion where he has been teaching for seven years.

He began as a middle school physical science and math teacher, and then he taught Bible for a little bit. Now he teaches chemistry and physical science for high school kids. “I enjoy the fact that I get to teach what I like to teach, which is chemistry. I get to coach the sport that I love to coach, which is soccer.

The general atmosphere of this school is a very pleasant one to work in. While working in a public school, I wasn’t able to really talk about God all that much, which was unfortunate. There were openings, but you really weren’t allowed to say much unless the students asked you specific questions about your opinions on different things. At Wilmington Christian, it was different there because I was teaching all middle school, so I had all the younger age groups. You can have good conversations with them, but you can’t go into as much detail or depth with them.

Coming here, and moving into the high school, it’s been nice to be able to have those more detailed and in-depth conversations about, not just school, but life, God, school, sports, and other things like that. ”

getting to know HIM Mr. Ronnie Cheadle has been teaching upper school science at Red Lion for the last seven years. He is a 2002 graduate of Red Lion, the school’s first graduating class. He then earned a degree in chemistry education from the University of Delaware.

Mr. Cheadle also coaches boys and girls soccer and is an avid Philadelphia sports fan. He has been married to his wife, Jen, since 2014.

Playing the song, I’ll Fly Away, the Kidner brothers wrap up a special Red Lion assembly that showcased many of the acts from the talent show. Jeff is on banjo, Grant on upright bass, and Jack is playing guitar.

Bluegrass might not be the style of music that comes to mind when teenagers think of music, but Jack, Jeff, and Grant Kidner make it sound very fun and appealing. “When we were young, my grandfather took my brothers and me to Sam Yoder’s barn in Greenwood, Delaware, and they had bluegrass acts there often,” said Jack. “One of them was Little Roy Lewis and the Lewis Family. Jeff decided he really liked the sound of the banjo and that he wanted to play it. I decided that the guitar would be a good instrument to go along with it, so that’s what made us want to start playing the music.”

Jack and Jeff have been playing together for the last seven years, and their younger brother, Grant, joined them on upright bass about five years ago.

When Mrs. Rupert asked them to perform in the Red Lion Talent Show, they said yes. They were all very glad to see the crowd go wild for them when they were all finished.
