Veterans Day Nov. 12 The Red Lion campus hosted the annual Veterans Day Assembly on Monday, November 12. The U.S. Veterans and Military servicemen gathered together for a time of fellowship before the assembly in the Pusey Gym. At the assembly, Mr. George Timko spoke about the meaning of the “Star-Spangled Banner� and showed a video of its history. Afterwards, the veterans were given thank you cards written by the students.

Feed the Need Nov. 30 Friday, November 30, was the Feed the Need Packing Party. Students of all ages from Red Lion, Tall Oaks, and GCA helped to package meals. The meals consisted of various ingredients including rice, beans, soy, and a vitamin mixture. Students were able to measure out ingredients and package them into bags and then into boxes to be distributed.

Powder Puff Nov. 30 The Red Lion high school girls participated in the annual Powderpuff fundraiser game on Friday, November 30.

The senior girls played the underclassmen in a game of flag football. At halftime, the senior boys performed a cheer routine. Ultimately, the senior girls won. The proceeds raised at the game will go towards the senior mission trip to the Bahamas in the spring.

Christmas Concert Dec. 11 The Red Lion upper school students performed in the annual Christmas concert on Wednesday, December 11. In the Red Lion Campus sanctuary, the middle school choir, high school choir, and the select ensemble sang. The upper school band also played.

Tri- State Christian Academy will be hosting their high school production Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland on February 1 at 7:00 p.m. as well as February 2 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Reach Church will host The Daddy Daughter Dance on Saturday, February 9, at 6:00 p.m. All dads are invited to bring their daughters to an event they will never forget.

Reach Church will be hosting the annual Night to Shine on February 8 at 6:00 p.m. This is a unique event providing a prom experience for guests with special needs.

Red Lion Christian Academy along with Tall Oaks Classical School will be hosting their production of Newsies. The play will take place on three nights: February 28, March 1 and March 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Pusey Gym.

he hockey puck flies toward the goal.

Within half a second, he instinctively adjusts his body to block the puck. This is just another day in the life of Jake Booth.

Jake Booth, currently a 9th grader at Tall Oaks Classical School, started playing ice hockey when he was three years old. Jake’s parents were the people who introduced him to the game. “At first I did not like it, but as the years went by I got better, and I liked it more,” Jake said. Jake loved hockey, but none of the positions on the ice called to him. “One day the coach had me play goalie, and I loved it,” he explained. “It gave me a new perspective of the game.” Even though his parents were hesitant to allow him to play goalie, they consented and have since supported Jake and have been as committed to hockey as he is. “It’s a whole family effort.” said Jake. “My family has had to make a lot of

sacrifices.”

Jake notes, “It was four years ago when I actually committed to playing hockey.”

He played in AAA, the highest league of three, but the competitiveness was too much for him. He ended up not enjoying the sport as much due to how the competitiveness negatively impacted him.

“I was focusing on competitiveness alone,” said Jake, “and not on appreciating the game itself.” Because of this, he decided to play in A instead, the least competitive of the three leagues, and he loved it. As time went on, Jake felt like he was ready for the competitiveness again, so he went back up into AA. AA had the perfect blend of competitiveness and appreciation for the game. He currently plays for the Igloo Jaguars.

The team is one of Jake’s favorite parts of hockey. “I really love the brotherhood,”

Jake said. “Seeing [my team] on and off the ice is great. I’m the leader of the team.

My attitude is the attitude of the team. It’s a cool experience.” Jake thus has to always have a positive attitude during the game.

Whenever he would let in a goal, he would just get back up and keep playing.

His team started cheering “Be a Booth!” because of Jake’s positivity. When Jake’s team asks him why he is always so positive, Jake says, “It’s my Jesus.” Jake’s goal in hockey is to keep the focus on God. “I’m doing it to the glory of God not to man,” said Jake.

“Being in the goal is the best feeling there is. When the puck comes toward me, it’s instinctive to me [to block it]. It’s muscle memory.” In the future, Jake looks to get a scholarship for college. A few college scouts already have an eye on him as a goalie. www.reachschools.online

J

ulianna Edwards is a junior at Tri-State Christian Academy.

“Since I was twelve or thirteen, I’ve always wanted to volunteer at an animal shelter because I love animals,” she explained. Julianna began volunteering at Cecil County Animal Services in Chesapeake City, Maryland. She continued, “My first time here was when I was fifteen. Since then it’s been two, three, four maybe five times that I’ve been back, so I want to start doing it more often because I really enjoy it. It makes me happy.” Julianna plans to volunteer at the Cecil County Animal Shelter every weekend. Her favorite thing to do there is the cat cuddling. “They’re just so soft and little, and they’re just really sweet,” she said. “I have a dog, a boxer named Roxy, and she is just energetic and just full of life,” she said.

“I would like to go into the Air Force to be a pilot,” she said. After going into the Air Force, Julianna wants to become a doctor or a veterinarian.

She said, “It doesn’t really matter, just something to help people or animals.”

This is her second year at Tri-State, and she really enjoys the community among the students and faculty.

“The family that we have created at Tri-State is amazing.” She continued, “It’s just extraordinary how much everybody knows each other and how much we love each other.” Julianna does yearbook, basketball, and cheerleading at Tri-State.

Julianna and her family started going to Reach Church in June of 2018. “I really like how everybody knows each other and how it’s just a big circle of people that support you and believe in you through God,” she said. She now is a part of the youth group of at Reach. “One of my favorite things that we’ve done is probably going to North Bay for the weekend and having a team youth group building session.” She continued,” Getting to know one another through God was really great.”

mma Copes may only be a fifth grader, but she does more than you think. She has two loving parents, Lori and Jim, and a little sister named Alana, who looks up to her big sister greatly. Amma grew up at GCA and came to Red Lion in Pre-K 4. Her parents put her and her sister into Red Lion because, “The Christian atmosphere was a big part of it, since it’s our faith, and it’s close to home,” her mother said. “I really liked the welcoming feeling that I received from Red Lion.”

Amma is ten years old, and she’s been dancing since she was three years old. This is her eighth year. What got her into dancing was her mom. Her mom has a gymnastic and dance background too. Amma does jazz, tap, and ballet. She recently skipped a level in tap and jazz. She is the youngest in her class, but that does not mean she is not right along the side of the older girls. Right now, she is in ballet pre-point and is about to take a test. Her dance teacher said she will probably pass early. Her parents say she practices a lot at home and is constantly dancing.

When they realized Amma had a real talent for dancing, they decided to put her into Delaware Dance Company. Delaware Dance Company runs a performance called The Nutcracker every year, a Cinderella performance every four years, and, in the spring, they do Carnival of the Animals. Last year was her first year performing in The Nutcracker, and she was a mouse. This year she had three parts: a bon bon, an angel, and a solder.

Amma is very busy with dance practice every Tuesday and Thursday. For The Nutcracker, she had practices every Saturday and Sunday for two months until the performance. Amma is sad that it is all over, but she is excited for the next play.

Amma never gets nervous; as a matter of fact, she is the one who calms down her other dance friends who get nervous. Amma’s dad said, “I don’t know if it hasn’t hit her yet, but it is just natural. There really is no hesitation.” Her mom said, “She’s amazing on stage! She just shines, and her personality just shows through. You can tell she loves it. It makes me feel happy.”

For Delaware Dance Company, a dancer can audition for more as he or she gets older. Amma auditioned for the Youth Ensemble, and after that level, a dancer can audition for the performing company which allows the dancer to go around and do different performances. Amma’s mom said, “Everybody goes to the plays - our family’s friends, friends of friends. She had a wonderful support group this year.

This year there was a whole group of friends that went that are from Red Lion.”

They all went to lunch, and then they went to the play. Amma felt so special because afterwards she came out and got to see all of them and take pictures with them. One of Amma’s friends, Kiki, said, “I thought it was so cool seeing someone from Red Lion in the play.”

Amma is a born leader with many achievements. Not only did she pass levels in both tap and jazz, she also she has been nominated for the Junior National Leadership Conference in D.C. It is a week-long program that teaches leadership skills and team building. When it comes to The Nutcracker, Amma’s mom said, “When she started The Nutcracker last year she not only learned her part, but she could come back and show some of the other parts because she was sitting there watching them rehearse.” Amma doesn’t have the personality where she has to grab attention, which is why she is such a leader. Her mom said, “You see the other girls, who get upset and nervous. A lot of girls may cry and get emotional about it, but Amma has a very calm and collected self-demeanor about her that just comes together.”

Amma is a great role model for her little sister, Alana. Alana wants to do whatever Amma does. Amma really just enjoys life as a whole.

Dogs are known for many things throughout the course of history but are mostly recognized as being a faithful companion to humans. For this prodigy, however, man’s best friend is much more. Emma Grob is a GCA freshman with a love for furry friends and a knack for teaching tricks. She has successfully raised a seeing eye dog and regularly trains her personal dogs for fun.

How many dogs have you had?

Four. Three of them have been my pets, and I’ve raised one for The Seeing Eye. I currently have two dogs, both adopted from a rescue called All 4 Paws.

Which one has been your favorite?

I don’t like having favorites, but probably Ellie, my German Shepherd-Black Mouth Cur mix. I’ve spent the most time with her.

What do you love most about dog training?

I like seeing the progress they make and seeing how happy they get. It’s really cool how much dogs can learn.

You have adopted two rescue dogs. Does it mean anything to you to take a dog from a shelter rather than from a store?

Oh, definitely. Shelter dogs are just as good as, if not better, than dogs from pet stores. Frequently, dogs from a store are from dog farms where the conditions there could be worse than an average shelter. Also, puppies from a store are past the prime socialization stage. From a shelter, you can get a dog anywhere from 8 weeks to 15 years old. This helps you build their confidence and social abilities.

How was your experience training a dog for The Seeing Eye? Time consuming. I mean, it was a good experience, but definitely time consuming and difficult. My dog was a little crazy most of the time too. But I would consider doing it again.

Is there a specific kind or breed of dog that you find better for training?

Some dogs are definitely better for certain things, but it really depends on the dog’s personality. But in my experience, my Spaniel mix has been the best candidate.

On average, how long does it take for a dog to learn a trick?

That depends completely on the dog.

Some dogs learn really fast, and others take a while to comprehend.

You just have to understand the dog’s learning style.

Do you see animals as a career option?

I want to do something with dogs and training, but I’m not sure what yet.

Will you continue to raise and train dogs throughout your life?

Definitely.

The Actor Since the beginning of dramatic productions at GCA in 2012, countless actors have come and gone throughout the years. However, one has prevailed. Emma Grob, a freshman, has been participating in drama since it started.

Having been in seven different plays and musicals, she has earned several large roles, including Belle from Beauty and the Beast, the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz, and her latest, Marta from The Sound of Music.

When did your passion for drama begin?

Probably as soon as I started working on Peter Pan (2012). I really wanted one of the main roles, but even though I didn’t get it, I had one of my best drama experiences. Plus, it was done by my favorite director.

You’ve now been under four different directors. Who has been your favorite? Why? Mrs. Laura Betters, because she was the least demanding. She was cool with the kids, and I don’t remember her asking for a ton of extra practices.

If you could have a dream director, what would he/she look like?

Someone like Mrs. Betters, but a little less perfectionistic and a little less over the top.

What has been your favorite role?

Hmm…probably Bielke from Fiddler on the Roof because I liked the actors I had to be with because of their roles in relation to mine. I liked the show itself too.

Do you have a dream role?

Yes, Eliza Dolittle from My Fair Lady.

What about drama do you love?

I love seeing the show develop. Also, I like being able to be somebody else for a while and making friends with somebody who I’ve never really met before, which is nice.

Do you see acting as a career opportunity for you?

Probably not, but it would be fun to at one point just go and be a background character in a movie or something just to see how everything works.

Finally, what are you hoping to get out of this next musical?

To become more confident and become a better actress. I’m really excited to work with our newest director, Mrs. Taylor.

ryan and Rachael O’Connell have been married for about fifteen years. Rachael is a Mary Kay sales director, business coach, and a mentor. Bryan works at JP Morgan Chase. They have four kids, Andrew (9th), Timmy (7th) Maggie (4th), and Carrie (1st). They all used to be homeschooled, but they all attend school at Tall Oaks now. Rachael O’Connell said, “I wanted to transition them to more of a classical school setting, which is what we were doing at home.” The O’Connells were attending another church, but they were feeling called to go somewhere else. They heard about Reach Church through Rachael’s dad who was good friends with Pastor Betters.

They have now been attending Reach for four years. They really like Reach because of the community of people there and the example it sets. Rachael said, “We have a heart for community. We want our lives to reflect Jesus in everything that we are doing. We pray together every morning that it would be our focus for that day.” They also like how, “they can make a large church seem small.” Something that stuck out to them is how Reach was very good with connecting people right away. Also, they like how there are small groups and how they preach very biblically based.

The kids’ program was something that was very important to Bryan and Rachael since they have four kids. They said, “The kids’ program is constantly pointing back to Jesus. We feel very passionate about living our life with Nothing but Jesus as the motto. We talk about it at home in our family devotions. It is not just the tagline of saying it but what it actually means and what it looks like.” Rachael continued, “I believe it is very important to put my children around people who are speaking to them about Jesus when we are not around.”

Bryan and Rachael feel very led to help encourage marriages. They both help out a lot at the church.

They used to be involved in the choir, they lead a marriage community group, they minister with some families, and they help with guest connections. Bryan also works in the nursery, and he is a Reach leader in the youth group. God brought this family to the right church and has been with them every step of the way.

ourney Christian Academy is a school for children with learning differences. The school has a loving and encouraging environment, and the students are able to receive the academic help they need, while also receiving the message of the Gospel. Journey is a fairly new addition to Reach Christian Schools. “The GCA committee approved a few hours of classes two times a week for parents who wanted extra help and support for their children. There was a real urgency for students with learning differences to learn in an environment supporting their academic needs, and the two-day-a-week program was started. This grew into a five-day-a-week school,” explained Sandra Gasorek, principal of Journey.

This is their fourth year as part of Reach Christian Schools. Journey moved from the Red Lion campus in Bear, Delaware, to the Tri-State campus in Elkton, Maryland. At Tri-State, they have begun to integrate the two schools for some aspects of the day. “We have the opportunity for inclusion. If a Journey student is close to grade level and is able to spend a period or two in a Tri-State class, we are able to build this into their schedule” said Ms. Gasorek.

All students at Journey have the chance to be included in the Tri-State community. “Our students are part of lunch, chapel and specials including art, physical education, technology, music and library.” Ms. Gasorek continued, “And what has been wonderful about Tri-State is that the staff and students are so welcoming, so loving. Their students sit with our students at lunch and fist bump them in the hall. They are kind and considerate. Both schools have become family to each other.” Mrs. Devard, Journey’s upper school teacher added, “Our students have not just been tolerated or invited but included into the Tri-State family. Students from both schools have embraced each other and forged friendships.”

The Journey students also participate in sports, most recently on the cheerleading and basketball teams. With so many options and through this unique integration, students are able to gain a well-rounded school experience.

Journey students take all of the core classes offered at Tri-State, and they use similar or the same curriculum. “We focus on teaching the way each child can learn,” Ms. Gasorek explained. At Journey, the staff is able to work together to create specialized plans to meet the needs of each student. She continued, “Students are tested upon entrance and a plan based on the results is put into place.” Along with the small class sizes, the individual plans allow students to receive the personalized guidance they need. “Additionally, we connect parents to therapies and resources, Ms. Gasorek noted. The individualized plans coupled with weekly, and sometimes daily communication with parents allows Journey to stand out among other schooling options.

Currently, there are twelve students attending Journey. “They are thriving now, and they’re genuinely happy,” said Ms. Gasorek.” She continued, “Many times the students will say they do not want the weekend to come because they don’t want to leave, and they can’t wait until Monday, which is a first for so many of our students.” The theme verse for the school is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Ms. Gasorek explained, “The staff has already seen Jesus working in the lives of each student. The growth and academic achievement we witness daily in our students is proof that the program has been of great benefit.” A parent of one of our upper school students shared, “My son’s academic and social skills have greatly improved since his introduction to JCA this year. The joyous environment of the school, unconditional support from the teachers and staff, and individualized instruction have turned his education into a positive experience and something he looks forward to everyday.”

“God has placed JCA at the forefront of a schooling option that is rare. at home in the water After learning how to swim at the age of five, Ja Haygood, a junior at Red Lion, has broken multiple records for his swim club and competed in tournaments across the United States.

sthma often prevents a person from becoming an incredible athlete, but for Ja Haygood, asthma was his inspiration. When Ja was five years old, he was diagnosed with asthma, and his doctor recommended to his mom that he should learn how to swim in order to help his breathing and overall health. So, Ja learned how to swim.

Within two years, Ja no longer had asthma. No more medicine. No more breathing machines. No more breathing problems. Ja continued to swim until one of his coaches, named Bruce Gemmel, suggested that he should compete in a meet for fun. “I enjoyed it, I loved the racing, and I loved winning, so it turned me into a great swimmer,” said Ja. That is where Ja’s aquatic career really took off.

Soon, he was swimming in meets all across the country including Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, and Florida. Ja broke six records between the ages of 11 and 12. He completed the 50m freestyle in 18 seconds and the 100m freestyle in 55 seconds- both were new records for his club. He also broke other records for his club, including the 100m butterfly (short course and long course), 100m backstroke, and 50m backstroke.

But as Ja grew so did his challenges. Ja was dealing with a stressful environment. Then, when he was just 13, Ja became a victim of racism. “It hit me on the pool deck,” Ja explained. “Two kids

just walked up to me and called me a racial slur.

I was shocked. I hadn’t really ever had issues like that before. I never expected racism to hit me in an area where I was with a bunch of other kids my age.”

Ja continued to swim, even after his mom stopped attending his practices, as the racism continued to worsen. “It also hit me again, as I was leaving, and walking to my mom’s car. An adult called me a racial slur. At that point I felt attacked.

So I quit. I couldn’t go every day. I couldn’t do it anymore,” said Ja. He stopped swimming for two whole years. “What I learned was that you suffer through things, and you need to fight through things, even when you’re young. Now that I’m older, I know that it was honestly just jealousy. I was beating their kids and breaking records.” Ja began swimming again last year, despite the way that he was being treated, but he still wishes that he could’ve continued swimming for those two years. “If I hadn’t stopped swimming, next year I could be at an Olympic time trial, with a chance to go to the next Olympic games.”

Ja follows a disciplined schedule every day. “I set the alarm clock for 2:50 a.m., wake up, and eat a huge breakfast. Then I leave the house at 3:00, and hop in for a warm up. Then I start practicing with the team, and that workout last two hours, nonstop from 4:00-6:00 a.m.,” says Ja. Then after being up for more than three hours, Ja heads to school

which starts at 8:00 a.m. After getting through the day at school, which ends at 3:00 p.m., Ja goes home and gets a well-deserved break. Then, he goes right back to the pool at 6:00 p.m. for another practice with the team that lasts until 8:00 p.m. when he goes home and gets ready to wake up again at 2:50 a.m.

Currently Ja is swimming for Delaware Swim Team. Ja says his most important coach has been Coach Coop. “He’s always been a mentor to me and even helped me get into Red Lion my seventh grade year. I needed a bunch of recommendation letters from teachers and coaches, but honestly I think it was his letter that got me in because he knew me the best, and he knew what I was capable of.”

Since Red Lion doesn’t have a swimming team, Ja hasn’t had the opportunity to go to states. This year he found out that he could swim for Mt. Sophia and is excited that he will become eligible for states.

After high school, Ja is hoping to receive a scholarship for swimming. “I would love to be able to swim for either Penn State, or Stanford. I would also love to go to the Olympics. I should’ve never quit. I should’ve just kept swimming,” said Ja. But, until then, Ja will continue his rigid schedule, waking up at 2:50 in the morning and keep swimming. any of us have our best memories rooted in when we were young. Whether it was learning how all the letters come together to make words, figuring out how to tie our shoes, or simply playing with our friends, kindergarten was a time when the world was a place that was intriguing and fun.

This year’s kindergarten class is certainly full of fun. Their teacher, Mrs. Chaffee, has been teaching the youngest grade at Tall Oaks for eight years. Together with Mrs. Holt, they are helping the class prepare for first grade and beyond, through math, reading, coloring, and lots of crafts and games.

Many of the children love all of the things that they can make. “I love doing all the crafts because I like doing the art,” Ruth Church said. Fred Hanna, Caleb Briggs, Ransom Brown, Henry Jones, Savannah Lynch, and Bri Moon all echo this. Caleb loves how he made a Tall Oaks-themed clock, and Ransom liked “L” week, which was lion-themed. Savannah, who loves to draw, says “I like drawing wiggly worms.”

Another activity that the kindergarten class loves is the weekly show and tell. Every week there is a theme, which is usually a letter of the alphabet. Avery Stellabotte, smiling, says, “I brought Herschel [her younger brother] in for “H” week.” It’s a common occurrence to see parents, siblings, grandparents, and favorite toys go in and out of the classroom as they are proudly shown off to their classmates. Hadley Shimkus and Gabbi Hanna both like the academic aspect of Kindergarten. While Gabbi love to learn everything, Hadley mainly likes to read books, but can’t decide which book is her favorite.

Of course, the class also has fun outside of academics. Jackson Slater enjoys playing bingo, though he hasn’t won yet. And as usual, there are some who prefer to run around at recess.

Brady Blanton likes to play tag, though Paul argued that they can often be found playing a game of football. Joseph Clark is another who likes recess. “Me and Ransom play tag games.”

With so much to do, it’s a difficult choice for some to pick what they like best about kindergarten. Ethan Warshaw likes show and tell, coloring, recess, and learning how to read.

Elijah Carty simply says “everything” adding that he likes “all the colors that ever existed.”

“I get to learn so much about Jesus,” Claude Reagan says, before adding with a smile, “And my snake was a diamondback rattlesnake!”

And isn’t that what kindergarten is all about? Not just learning about numbers and words and socializing, but also learning about Jesus. Along with that, though, these kids are having fun with one another and are getting ready for first grade.

Students Find a New Home

Four students transfer to Red Lion after their school unexpectedly closes early in the school year.

ave you ever been told that your school is going to shut down, and you will need to find a new school within three days? For four students at Red Lion, that question was their reality.

On September 25, 2018, the board of the Delaware Academy of Public Safety and Security (DAPSS) voted to close the school permanently. This decision was very sudden, and it forced four students - Josiah Marlow, Gavin Moody, Tessa Stroble, and Aeryn Stroble - to locate a new school to attend for the remainder of the 2018-2019 school year.

The day they found out their school was closing began as a normal day at school. “We had gone to school like a normal day and then gone home, but at about 3 o’clock, a text was sent out to everybody saying that there was a mandatory meeting for parents and students at the school,” said Aeryn. At the meeting, the students and their families were informed that DAPSS had been shut down, and they would have to find a new school within 3-4 days.

However, DAPSS did not leave their students without any guidance. The next day the school hosted a school fair to help their students locate new schools.

At the fair, the four students and their families found a table set up for Red Lion Christian Academy, and they were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Pargoe who told them each about Red Lion. “They offered to let us take our placement tests the next day which was really nice,” said Tessa.

Soon enough, the students were at Red Lion testing into the school. Gavin said, “Red Lion offered a really good education, and it looked like a great opportunity for me.” Aeryn stated, “Red Lion honestly seemed like one of the nicest schools out of our choices and the best option for us.”

The new students still had to adjust to a different environment. “The structure at DAPSS was very different than Red Lion,” Josiah said. “I had a lot

more freedom at DAPSS, but that made it really hard to focus sometimes.

Here, it’s different. It’s more structured: you go to class, you learn, you do you work, but it’s a lot easier to focus here. I feel like they want you to be successful here, like success isn’t optional. I feel like everybody here is behind me. I talked with Mrs. Norris, and she’s doing everything she can to help me be successful, and that shows that she really cares.” Gavin explained. Aeryn added, “When I went to DAPSS, if I needed help with something, or didn’t understand something, the teacher couldn’t really stop, but here when I need help in Mrs. Pinder’s class for example, she comes and helps me one-on-one.”

Another difference between the schools was scheduling. “At DAPSS, we had four classes for ninety minutes each day, but at Red Lion we have eight classes for forty-five minutes,” Gavin noted.

According to the Josiah Marlow, he is thankful for the new athletic opportunities he has at Red Lion. “Overall, I would say that sports are more competitive here, and there are more resources like a bigger gym and better facilities. I really appreciate being able to play football again, and at Red Lion it feels like people here want sports to be successful. Here, you can tell that everybody wants Red Lion to be back on the map, and everybody supporting our programs is very motivating.”

The students from DAPSS say that they are glad they found a home here.

Although they had to leave some old friends behind, the students have found new friendships with Red Lion students, and they feel that they have been accepted and have become a part of the student body. Tessa said, “Everybody was very welcoming. I made friends pretty quickly. Everybody is nice here, and there isn’t really drama which was something that I had to deal with at DAPSS a lot.”

“All the teachers here are dedicated to their faith and what they do, and that really shows.

Everybody wants you to be successful and they’re behind you.”

r. Timothy Carroll is the beloved strings teacher and orchestra leader at Tall Oaks, bringing kids together across several grades and schools. Mr. Carroll first began playing the violin in fifth grade. Before violin, he had a little experience with an instrument called a hammered dulcimer. In high school, he taught a few friends to play “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” just for fun. For college, he attended Temple University, and earned degrees in both Violin Performance and Music Education. Soon after graduating, starting in 2005, he taught at a public high school. He soon had the idea to teach at Christian schools. He began teaching at Tall Oaks in 2010. Mr. Carroll now teaches at several Christian schools throughout the area. Through his teaching and nurturing the orchestra, he has touched the hearts of many children practicing under his guidance, and he is extremely popular among the orchestra members.

Mr. Carroll now plays the violin or fiddle, cello, double bass, and an Irish drum (called the bodhran).

He picked up his many instruments mainly out of necessity. “An orchestra, or any musical group really, sounds so much better with cellos and basses.” Mr. Carroll said. “Since I knew I wanted cellos and bases wherever I go, I purchased a cello and double bass for myself as soon as I finished college. It is much easier to teach an instrument if you can play it well.

Some of the hand percussion instruments that I play were easy to pick up with a few pointers from my dad and other friends.”

With this large selection of instruments, Mr. Carroll uses a wide variety of techniques to teach the students. Mr. Carroll explained, “There’s an old tradition of learning music by ear, which is also how we learn language as babies. I usually begin with this; however, alongside of this, we are also learning to read written notation. As the first two years progress, these are mixed together, similar to learning a spoken language later in life. Playing instruments is particularly fun because it adds a tactile dimension to music, which is different than singing. We start with the names of the parts of the instrument, and then, as soon as possible, we start making noise.”

“Mr. Carroll is a very fun teacher,” said an orchestra player. “I really enjoy playing with him. I like his sense of humor and can tell he likes his job.” Many of Mr. Carroll’s students love and adore him. “He is very passionate about us; always encouraging and helping us,” freshman Richard Turley said. Mr. Carroll is very open and kind to his students, often adding witty jokes to keep the energy flowing. “He is very positive and passionate about what he does, and

always makes hilarious jokes that absolutely nobody understands.” said sophomore Zach Carter.

Mr. Carroll doesn’t teach instruments in a boring way. Instead, he takes suggestions from the students for interesting pieces to play, such as soundtracks to popular movies or famous pieces by classical composers. He encourages each student to practice and to always do his or her best. According to Ian Rippon, a fifth grader, “Mr. Carroll is a patient teacher and doesn’t get irritated if you mess up. He’s funny and energetic.” Beyond being encouraging and friendly, he is understanding and cares for each of his students. “I remember when I was struggling with homework as mid-terms were around the corner,” one student said. “I was late to our afternoon practice, so I apologized. Mr. Carroll simply smiled and told me it was all right and that he understood.”

“Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.” Mr. Carroll says that Psalm 33:3 sums up his goal for the students. He hopes that the orchestra students glorify Christ through their music. He wants his students to play at church and at home “with excellence and a grateful attitude.” He believes that “when we create or work as unto the Lord, we do bring Him glory through imitating his creative acts.” Through the orchestra, the students are seeking to glorify God in their playing.

He especially loves to see students use what they’ve learned to play at church or to help with their church’s ministries. He desires to show the various beautiful flowers of God’s creation, similar to the array of beauty in music. “Another of my goals in the music I pick,” explains Mr. Carroll, “is to expose students to a broad range of styles and colors. It would be ridiculous to say that only one flower is the best flower God has created. Likewise, we come from a family of every time, tongue, tribe, and nation, therefore, the best of all kinds of art, architecture, food, and music belongs to us!”

Mr. Carroll says that he has learned a lot in his teaching experience, especially from the young students, “who still get a kick out of making sounds together for the first time. The enjoyment you see in their faces is worth imitating. I’ve also found that the behaviors which sometimes frustrate me when teaching students usually are far worse in my own heart.”

Excellence One of Mr. Carroll’s favorite parts of conducting the Tall Oaks orchestra is the many opportunities they have to play. “I really enjoy the ‘gigs’ that we are able to play with some of my musicians that have been playing with me for a few years; for example, providing background music for Grandparents’ Day, or playing at a local nursing home like the Arbors at New Castle, or putting on a concert at the Sunday Breakfast Mission,” he says. “These types of gigs often make up the bread and butter of a working professional musician’s schedule. The fact that we are able to imitate His image in situations where

there are unbelievers and sometimes share the Gospel clearly is very exciting.”

When Mr. Carroll is not teaching or playing instruments, he is with his family. He is a kind husband to Mrs. Christine Carroll and a loving father to Talitha Carroll, their baby daughter. One of his hobbies is gardening, and he has come to understand the challenges of keeping plants healthy through organic methods. He also enjoys visiting coffee shops with his wife and daughter. To his students, Mr. Carroll will forever be the energetic orchestra leader and instrument instructor.

Mrs. Northen “I probably drew closer to the Lord during that time, and in any type of crisis, that’s what I would recommend for someone - to pray and just to read the Word,” Mrs. Patti Northen said.

Mrs. Northen went through a divorce and although it was an adjustment for her, she was able to get through that time with the help of the Lord. “I would say after my husband left, and I knew I was going to be on my own, that’s when I really just got into the Word.” She continued, “I was constantly growing, and then all of a sudden, I really wanted to serve.”

However, Mrs. Northen also knew she would need the Lord to help her to forgive. “I had to forgive my husband even though he didn’t ask for forgiveness, and only through God can that happen because you can’t do that on your own,” she said. “It took a while, but what a relief when you can forgive someone, someone that does something to you, maybe deceives you, and you can forgive them. It’s so freeing. There’s a bitterness and that bitterness goes away, and then you’re joyful, and it’s an awesome thing.”

Mrs. Northen now works in the Red Lion Upper School office, and it was there that she met her husband.

“Paul came in here one morning to see if he could park his car in the

Red Lion parking lot while he was away on a mission trip he was taking to Haiti,” she said. “I said ‘I’ll check with Bryan Clark to see if it is okay for him to park there.’ Anyway, we went out on a date, and one date led to another, and we actually took a mission trip together the following year to Haiti with a group from his church.”

They got married November 2, 2018. “I am just over the moon and happy and thankful that I met him,” she said. “I have a boy and a girl, and Paul has a boy and a girl. Both his kids each have two children so now this small family that we have is this big family,” she said. “This was our first Christmas together with everybody, and it was pretty cool!”

“We both are, I would say, equally yoked, which is what I would highly recommend for anyone who is ever thinking about getting married. Make sure that you look for a Christian man or woman, a godly person that has the same values as you do so that you will be equally yoked,” she said. “That’s what the Lord wants us to do - to have someone that you’re equally yoked with so that your life is more peaceful and joyful.”

Mrs. McMillan Mrs. Kimberly McMillan was born in California and raised on a Navy research and development base in the Mojave Desert. “I became a Christian when I was in 10th grade that was a life changing event for me.” She continued, “When I was in high school I made it my focus and mission to listen to my friends, even listen to the kids that were not my friends and try to hear people’s story and show care and concern for everyone.” And this made an impact upon her classmates, as she was voted homecoming queen her senior year. “God used it to glorify Himself because I was able to testify at a secular school on a big Friday night football game where the whole town is there that my goal in my life is to pursue Jesus Christ,” she said. This pattern continued in college. “When I went to college I did a lot of urban ministries, elderly outreach, and Mexico outreach, and my senior year I was the director of urban ministries,” she said. She was able to do urban outreaches in various cities in California, such as San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

“Since then, I got married, I moved across the country, and I had three kids. All three attended here at Red Lion and are now married. I work in the academic resource center helping kids who struggle overcome their obstacles and try to help them understand that the things that you struggle with end up becoming your greatest strength and ministry. That’s the glory and power of God:

Unfortunately, Mrs. McMillan was faced with a divorce. “But through that negative event, even that, God opened up a ministry to international students.” She continued, “I started hosting international students in my home, and I have been able to witness and be a missionary to over 60 students who have lived with me since that time from all different countries, from Columbia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, France, Spain, Korea, Japan, and China.”

“Most recently, God has brought a pastor into my life. He is currently the pastor at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Wilmington,” she said.

“After a long relationship, we are now married.

That opens up another ministry as a pastor’s wife, which is something I would have never thought or anticipated.”

They got married July 15, 2018. Although she had never expected to be a pastor’s wife, Mrs. McMillon knows she will

be able to create a ministry out of it. “We just think the same way, and we’re both really into ministry,” she said.

“I think that, as a reflection, sometimes in our life we’re going to have good things that happen, and we’ll also have some really harsh things happen. The good news is that Jesus is with us through it all and that even in the darkest places, if we lean into Him and trust in Him Jesus has the ability to change those things, those hurtful places, those dark places, into things that can bless other people, and I think that’s to the glory of Christ.”

Winter Heat “In one of our games, I had a really cool play where I was able to go through their whole team crossing over. I think our best game yet was against Newark Charter. It was the best we played together as a team, and we were able to get ahead in the first quarter and take control of the game. After they took the lead back from us, we made a really good push towards the end of the game for a comeback, even though we still lost.”

“My favorite match this year was probably against Howard. The week before our team had almost got into a fight with them, so coming into the match, tensions were high. The first period, nothing special really happened. But in the second period, I got him down onto the mat, but he was able to get back up and put me down. Then I had a reversal, and I put in the half nelson, grabbed his leg, and drove him onto his back and pinned him. I think that was the most my team clapped the whole season because we really wanted to beat those guys.”

“St. Georges was a big game. It was our first game, and St. Georges was coming in ranked pretty high, so we really wanted to beat them to start the season off right. The game went pretty well even though we still lost, because we really fought hard that whole game. Even after Gary went down in the third quarter, we still held our own. We were making shots, swinging the ball around, and having fun. It was cool to see everyone come together and step up when Gary had to come off. We lost by nine points, but we played really hard against one of the best teams in the state.”
