Students researched a country, made a display describing the country, and many students made food items to share with those attending. This gave the students the opportunity to learn about various cultures from around the world. The fifth grade teachers are Mr. Bill Petrauschke and Mrs. Nina Gioconda.

Joseph Pargoe and Caleb Sachetti represented Red Lion’s wrestling team at the DIAA state wrestling tournament at Cape Henlopen HS on February 22. They were both selected to the first team all-academic squad. Joseph was chosen as the MVP of the team, and Caleb was awarded the gold hammer for being the toughest wrestler of the year.

Reach Church hosted the third Tim Tebow Night to Shine prom on Friday, February 8.

At Night To Shine, guests are greeted by their very own buddy who will serve as their host for the evening. Guests walked the red carpet and enjoyed the VIP treatment, including a friendly paparazzi welcome, flowers, great food, fun games, and the chance to dance the night away. The event completed with a crowning ceremony where each guest become a prom king or queen.

Tall Oaks junior Sam McGarvey and Red Lion senior Ashton Driver competed in the state finals for the Poetry Out Loud contest on February 26 at the Smyrna Opera House.

Out of the twenty participants, Sam was the runner-up in the state and Ashton placed in the top six. Sam won the state competition last year as a sophomore.

Red Lion and Tall Oaks students performed Newsies in the Red Lion Christian Academy Pusey Center. The shows were on February 28 and March 1-2. The musical is about a homeless New York City newsboy Jack Kelly who befriends two newcomers to his trade. When publisher Joseph Pulitzer sets new rules that make it harder for the young newspaper salesmen to make a buck, the boys go on strike. Jack Kelly was played

by Jacob Munson, and Katherine was played by Lydia Glover. The director was Nathan Gioconda.

Senior Trips

Seventeen Tall Oaks seniors and four chaperones traveled to Greece and Italy for their senior trip during March 9-16. They are shown here standing on Mars Hill, in Athens, Greece, the place where Paul preached in Acts 17:1634. The students read from this scripture while on the very hill where Paul preached. The seniors also visited the Tomb of Agamemnon where they sang Psalm 40 in harmony.

The seniors also visited Rome where they saw the Pantheon, the Catacombs, and the Coliseum.

Many of the sites they visited were places that they have studied in their classes.

Twenty-nine Red Lion traveled to Spanish Wells, Bahamas on March 8-17 to serve and minister to the people there.

The seniors led worship and participated in youth group at all three churches on Spanish Wells. They led four services at the Spanish Wells Methodist Church and attended youth group at the Spanish Wells Peoples Church as well as a youth group at the Spanish Wells Gospel Chapel.

The students also delivered school supply kits. They gave them to the Haitian immigrant children in the Blackwood community of North Eleuthera.

Students also shared the Gospel with the students and played games with the children.

Olivia Calbazana is a cancer conqueror. The doctors told her that she wouldn’t be able to walk. Now she plays field hockey and excels in it. Her goal is to spread awareness for other kids just like her.

livia Calbazana was only three years old when she was diagnosed with a brain cancer called Medulloblastoma. She got a cold in September that just wouldn’t go away so they decided to take her to the doctor. The doctor said it was just a virus or an ear infection. Finally, on Black Friday in 2008 her parents went back to the pediatrician office and said that something more needs to be done because she couldn’t keep any food down. She was down to about 27 pounds, so they went up to A.I. duPont Hospital. The doctor in the ER gave her IV fluids to knock out whatever was in her system. The doctor finally ended up ordering a CAT scan. After running some tests, the doctor came in the room and called a nurse to come sit with Olivia while he took the parents to another room. That is when they found out she had a brain tumor. Olivia’s mom, Lulu said, “Finding out was like hitting a wall. I mean, it’s one thing for an adult or someone who has already lived their life to be diagnosed, but it’s another thing to hear that your threeyear-old child, who hasn’t had any bit of life, could have cancer.”

Once they found out about the brain tumor, twelve hours later they needed to close off her room in the ICU because she had hydrocephalous.

Basically, the tumor was in her cerebellum, and it was forming a corc which made the fluid in her brain blocked from flowing out because the tumor was in the way. She had a temporary shunt put in, which is drilling a hole in her brain to drain the fluids. Two days later she had tumor resection surgery. It was a six-hour surgery which took place on December 1. She needed multiple blood transfusions. Shortly after, she was going to receive treatment, and her shunt was taken out. The tumor was sent to pathology, and it came back as Medulloblastoma which a very aggressive brain tumor. There is no set treatment for it. There were multiple treatment plans that they could have chosen. Radiation with a three year old is very detrimental since her body is still developing. There was a trial where they were testing to see if a lower dose of radiation could be as impactful as to a higher dose of radiation. She ended up receiving proton radiation. She started chemotherapy two days before Christmas. She ended up having to spend Christmas and New Years in the hospital.

After surgery, she developed posterior fossa syndrome, which means you go mute, and you cannot walk. She had to relearn everything. Her mother Lulu said, “She had to go to OTPT, speech therapy…you name it.” She had also damaged one of the nerves in her eye so she had sixth nerve palsy in one of her eyes. They had to patch her good eye, so the weaker eye would not turn itself off. They moved from living in the hospital to Boston. On January 5, they moved into a place called Christopher’s Haven which is an apartment for families whose children are receiving radiation from Mass General Hospital.

They lived there for about two months while receiving brain and spine radiation every day. She wasn’t allowed to eat anything before radiation. She needed to be completely still during treatments. They had to build a full body cast for her to be in to make sure she was in the same position every time in treatment.

In March, they ended up moving back to Delaware, and Olivia started to receive her second round of chemo. In all, she ended up having ten rounds of chemo. Her last round ended in March 2010. She still goes back for scans regularly. In the childhood cancer world, you do not say “cancer free” or “remission.” Instead they call it “NED,” which stands for “no evidence of disease.”

Olivia’s parents decided to put her into Red Lion because, “We were looking for a school that had small classrooms because of the treatments that she has gone through. We also wanted something that was Christian centered.” She has been attending Red Lion since Pre-K 4.

She has a little sister named Gabriella who also attends Red Lion. Olivia plays field hockey for Red Lion. Her position is sweeper which is the last defender on the field. This year for field hockey she did Go for the Gold. All the girls on her team wore gold socks, and they sold pretzels and bracelets.

Olivia is part of Kisses for Kyle, an Alex’s Lemonade Hero Ambassador, B+ Foundation Hero, and attends Kay’s Kamp which was founded in the memory of Kaylyn Warren who had attended Red Lion. She hopes to do a Go for the Gold event during soccer this spring. Her goal is to spread awareness and funding for childhood cancer research.

Using his skills as a violinist, Tall Oaks sophomore Zach Carter started a business to teach violin to children in his community.

W

hen he stands on the stage, everyone falls silent. The audience knows that they will hear beautiful music from him and his violin. He stands there for a moment, holding his violin at the ready, waiting for Mr. Carroll to give the signal for him to begin. The signal is given: he brings his bow across the strings, and sweet music fills the air. As the music blossoms, he carefully brings to life the notes from the page and presents them to the audience.

The audience sits, stunned for a moment, before the music carries them away in a rush of emotion.

Zachariah Carter, a sophomore at Tall Oaks, has been playing the violin since he was in the second grade. He started playing under the instruction of Mr. Timothy Carroll.

At first, he did not enjoy violin, but his parents pushed him to keep practicing. As he practiced and improved, he started to truly love playing. His love and dedication have grown him into an outstanding musician. “He’s an amazing and virtuosic violin player,” a fellow orchestra member said.

Zach has had many opportunities to play throughout the years. In addition to playing for Tall Oaks, he is currently involved in the Chester County Youth Orchestra, where he is the concertmaster. He was also concertmaster for a one-day festival with the Lebanon Lancaster Music Educators Association. He has spent many hours playing for nursing homes and assisted living organizations. Last summer, Zach played in a wedding. He is an active member of the worship team at his church and earned a position in this year’s Delaware All-State Orchestra. Zach loves the violin so much that he plans to keep playing after he graduates from Tall Oaks. For college, he plans to pursue a pre-med degree and possibly study music as well.

With his outstanding violin skills, Zach recently started his own business to teach kids in his community. Ultimately, he hopes to branch out and teach kids in inner city Philadelphia, giving them the opportunity for affordable lessons, and a passion they can follow instead of getting involved in drugs or other dangerous activities. “It can also be as simple as just putting a smile on someone’s face… it just makes me happy to make other kids happy who are not as privileged as me,” he said.

Though he is mostly known for his amazing violin playing, he has also pursued other hobbies. He played cello for one and a half years when he was younger but pursuing two instruments at once was difficult because of the time commitment. Zach sings in the Tall Oaks Vocal Ensemble and recently performed as part of the Delaware All-State Choir.

He began karate when he was in second grade and is now a black belt. He has also won several medals at the state Science Olympiad competition, the most recent being in Geologic Mapping and Boomilever.

Zach desires to reach out and help as many people as he can, both through the violin and a medical career. He loves seeing the leadership opportunities that have opened up for him as a result of his hard work. He is grateful to his parents for helping him pursue violin in the first place and for encouraging him to keep practicing. Zach possesses the powerful ability to move people with his music and has even moved the girls in his class to want him to play at all their weddings. He is passionate about playing and hopes that he can share that passion with the students with whom he works. www.reachschools.online

Training in gymnastics since she was four years old, Tri-State seventh grader Savannah Henry has won over 150 medals and trophies. She also was the Maryland state champion in her age group in 2017.

S

avannah Henry is a gymnast who is only thirteen years old. It all started when she was about four years old and was doing ballet. She realized that she wanted to try out gymnastics, so she started at six years old then ended up training for one year. She then started competing at the age of seven. Savannah has qualified every year for states and regionals.

About two years ago, she was Maryland’s state champion. Savannah has been at Tri-State for eleven years now, and she came there when she was two. Her favorite class is Bible because her teacher is “really chill,” and she thinks Bible is interesting.

At her local meet this year, she took 1st place, and at her designated meet this year in Williamsburg, Virginia, she took 2nd place. She competes under USAG Xcel, which stands for United States of America Gymnastics. She competes under the gold group, and she has two more levels that she is able to reach one day.

Her favorite event is floor. She likes doing a floor routine better because she can pick her song and enjoys doing all the tricks. She likes picking sassy music for her routine. At her club, her nickname is called “Sassy Savannah.” Although her least favorite event is the bars, she always does best on the bars at competitions. She is not a fan of the bars because it hurts her hands. She succeeds at the

bars because she has a lot of upper body strength.

The “jump into high bar” is her favorite move to do. She never has forgotten a routine.

Savannah has competed in multiple states like Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Her favorite meet is in Maryland which is called “Beach Bounders.” She likes this meet because it is right on the beach, and she and her friends can all do fun things after the meet is done for the day. She has made a lot of new friends while doing gymnastics.

Even though she is only thirteen years old, she has a very busy life. Savannah does not just do gymnastics. She also plays soccer and does cheerleading. Her position in soccer is “striker” who scores most of the goals. In cheerleading, she is a flyer. Gymnastics has prepared her for other sports because she has a strong core base.

When it comes to gymnastics, a person has to be in good shape so she goes to the gym three days a week and trains about three and a half hours.

and makes her try harder and Miss Micky who is more supportive and relaxed. Savannah has to go from school soccer from 3-4:30 then goes and gets dinner, and then she goes to gymnastics from 6-8:30. Savannah said, “I look forward to going, but some days I dread it.”

Cheerleading scholarships are more common than gymnastic scholarships. Her mom said, “We don’t know if she wants to do anything with her career in gymnastcis so she is taking it year by year. She might switch over to cheerleading for a scholarship.” Savannah has more than 100 medals and many trophies. She said, “I am the top gymnast at my gym currently for my age group.”

She said she was most proud of her Williamsburg trophy, it was the first time she had to travel for a competition. She’s also very proud of the trophy she won in Maryland for being the state champion.

She said she was super surprised because she did not expect to be the champion. “It was a total surprise.” www.reachschools.online

lmost a thousand miles away from Red Lion Christian Academy campus is a small island 2000 ft. wide and 9,000 ft. long called Spanish Wells. This island also happens to be the location of the 2019 Red Lion senior class mission trip. At around 2:45 in the morning on March 8, the students loaded all their luggage, and hopped on a bus, ready to set out on their journey. To reach their destination, they had to take three flights, and a boat ride. First, they would drive about two hours to BWI Airport, then fly from there to Fort Lauderdale Airport. After their layover in Fort Lauderdale, they had a short flight to Nassau, which was followed by an even shorter flight to Eleuthera Airport. From Eleuthera, the students hopped on a boat to finally arrive in beautiful Spanish Wells on Friday, March 8 around 6 p.m.

The trip was led by Jeff Pinder, a father of two of the seniors, John and Caleb. Mr. Pinder is a local pastor who was also raised in Spanish Wells and has many connections in Eleuthera. Mrs. Holt also played an instrumental role in coordinating the trip and helping the students raise the necessary funds.

Mr. Pinder divided the students into four groups with a house for each group.

After settling in on the island and embracing the warm weather, the students listened to Mr. Pinder deliver a sermon at a local Methodist church, which was kind enough to serve the team food for the week. Shortly after the sermon was over, the students went home and finally got some sleep after fourteen hours of travel.

On the first full day on the island, the team was tasked with scraping paint off a house in preparation for the new coat that the students would put on.

The house belonged to a widow named Mrs. Margaret, whose house was not in very good shape. In fact, the students would work on two different houses throughout the week, the other house belonging to a couple named Mr. Chap and Mrs. Carol. By the end of the week, the students had repaired exterior damages to the homes, adding some wooden supports, where it was needed, repaired some brick work, and, of course, applied a brand-new colorful coat of paint to the houses. Mr. Pinder recalled, “When I told Mrs. Margaret that we were going to work on her home, she was speechless. She thanked me over and over again.” Chap talked with Mrs. Pinder and me for over thirty minutes trying to put his feelings into words He said, “I can’t believe that you

and the group would have considered to work on our home. Our home looks like a brand-new place. Thank you.” During the trip, the island people often commented about the good work that our group was doing.

Besides the work the team did on the houses, the students also visited a poor Haitian school in Northern Eleuthera and delivered school supplies to them. “I had a lot of fun at the school and all the kids were extremely friendly and adorable. I felt really bad that we didn’t have more school supplies and couldn’t spend more time with them. I met a thirteen-year-old girl named Nika and talked to her for a while about what her life was like in Eleuthera. It was a big eye-opener for me,” said Emily Haney, one of the seniors who went on the trip. Upon arriving to the school and after handing out the bags of school supplies to the students, the team played with the kids there, engaging in basketball games, playing soccer, drawing, playing with toys, or just simply talking to the children.

However, the students did not work the whole week and had free time to experience the island and its surroundings. To travel on the island, very few people use cars and instead, the students drove golf carts to get from place to place. Also, because the island is historically British, driving is done on the left side of the road in Spanish Wells and Eleuthera. The students witnessed the beautiful beaches and even went out to an island to swim with pigs. On one of the beaches, many courageous students jumped off a bridge about twenty feet above the water. The students also packed on a tour bus that drove them around Eleuthera teaching about the island’s history, and they made several stops. They saw the Glass Window Bridge, which is a narrow tip of the island where the violent waves of the Atlantic Ocean splash into the emerald blue waters of the Caribbean, providing a breathtaking view. The team also visited the Queen’s Bath, which is a stunning landmark where the Atlantic Ocean has carved out a huge crater on one side of the island and formed natural Jacuzzis. The Sapphire Blue Hole, a naturally formed blue hole that is 100 ft. deep at some points, was a favorite among the students. After a 30 ft. drop into the deep blue water, the students climbed back up using a long rope, to dive in again.

Although the team loved their time in Spanish Wells, they returned to the States on Saturday March 16, a little tanner and a little wiser.

first Encounter With the help of Reach UD student Jon Titus, Reach Church hosted their first rap concert featuring Christian rapper 5ive.

There have been many events that have taken place in the Reach Church sanctuary such as church services, weddings, funerals, and Christian concerts.

On February 24, the first rap concert took place and, according to church leaders, was a great success.

The Encounter tour finished with Reach Church as the last stop. Rap artists Bookie the Baby, Young Bro, 5ive, and Reach UD student Jon Titus performed in front of more than 100 students and adults. The headline act was 5ive, a rapper from Texas. He shared with the crowd that God saved him from a life of drugs and crime and that God gave him the gift of spitting rhymes. “The Lord said, ‘Give me six months,’ and in that time, He showed me what he wanted me to do.”

5ive said that his favorite moment of the tour was the concert at Reach Church. He added, “The experience was great, and it was a dope way to end the tour.”

The idea of having a rap concert at the church was from Jon Titus who is a Reach Church member and a Reach UD student. Jon followed 5ive, who is a popular Christian rap artist, and liked his style a lot. Jon ended up messaging 5ive on Instagram and was surprised when he responded back. Jon said, “I really fanned girl over him.” The show turned out really great and exceeded expectations. Jon has gotten amazing feedback from people on the concert.

Jon also performed as the opening act. He performed two original songs called “Colors” and “Hands in the Sky.” Jon said, “It’s important to include the

Holy Spirit within everything.”

When Jon was younger, he was not really into Christian rap, but his brother started getting into it. He decided to give it a try, and he loved it. “I thought it was corny at first,” he said. He started working on creating rap music of his own. One day Jon looked up on Instagram other Christian rappers to see if he could mimic them and see what he could learn from them. He wanted all the ideas he could get.

Jon attends University of Delaware and has lived in Delaware his whole life.

He said he definitely wants to continue rapping. His main passion is touring and traveling with other Christian artists. He said, “I want to travel the world and touch people’s lives.”

He likes living in the Reach UD house because there are a lot of people to connect with, and he uses the house as a resource to start new things and relationships with people. He said, “A nice stress reliever is to be able to go downstairs and connect with new people.”

He wants his songs to touch people’s lives, especially the lives of young students. “I am thankful for Red Lion to let me connect with the kids and especially the high school kids.” He wants to be a mentor and a leader for students, and he wants to start connections with them and help them.

“I want to come around and keep this connection with the students. I understand where the students are coming from, and I want to be a leader in their lives.”

“The experience was great, and it was a dope way to end the tour.”

The musical was held in the Pusey Center on the Red Lion campus for three nights.

T

he week of October 9, students gathered outside Mr. Gioconda’s room, pacing and practicing, waiting for their turn to enter the room and audition in front of the directors. Two weeks later, the casting choices were posted. After school on October 31, roughly sixty people gathered in the music room for the first practice, learning the music for “Seize the Day.” From then on, music and singing could almost always be heard in the hallways of the Red Lion building. During this time, the cast grew and improved.

“When you’re working with a cast that big, everyone grows really close, because you’re working for one common goal: that one big show,” Mrs. Hannah Berth, one of the directors of the show, comments. “Everyone has to work together, and it was great to see them all grow in the four months. You really become like a family.” This began the group’s journey of not only producing a successful musical but also becoming a close family.

Throughout the four months of practice, the directors, choreographer, crew, and cast worked their very hardest to make this production of Newsies a success. “It was great to get to know the directors better. We made the directors cry the last night of the show. They were really proud of us,” said Jacob Munson, the Tall Oaks senior who played Jack Kelly. Every day, different groups of people could be seen and heard practicing, singing, dancing, and working to learn the many things that went into the production. In total, the cast had to learn fourteen different songs, along with extensive dance sections for seven of those songs, which included tumbling, flipping, jumping, and tap dancing. Those were just some of the many parts of the dances taught

by Gabriela Poletaev, the choreographer for Newsies. Jacob Munson said, “I think the dancing was the best we’ve ever had.”

Mr. Nathan Gioconda worked incessantly along with Mrs. Berth, teaching melodies and harmonies, working with soloists, blocking scenes, and organizing tech. Junior Sam McGarvey, who was cast as Davey, said he appreciated “seeing how much work Mr. Gioconda put into the production and how he put his heart and soul into it. He was constantly overworking himself, trying to create the best possible production he could. All that work was infinitely appreciated by cast and crew and showed in the production itself. It showed how much he loved the show and the people in it.” For the directors, cast, and crew, the show involved a lot of hard work, but it was also very fun. “Newsies has been one of my favorite musicals since I was a kid, and so directing it this year really was a dream come true,” Mrs. Berth said.

Going backstage, props, sets, and furniture sat ready behind the curtain that were prepared for all the different scenes in Newsies. Led by Kathryn Forestieri, the stage crew worked hard and fast to switch scenes by moving all these things on and offstage at various times. Coming on and off the stage were the actors, wearing all the beautiful costumes that were designed especially for them. Mrs. Shelley Stone and Mrs. Brenda Munson worked tirelessly for four months designing, sewing, labeling, sizing, and readying all these costumes for opening night.

Several of these costumes were sewn from scratch, showing great skill, dedication, and effort put forth by not only these designers, but also a whole crew of parents and friends helping get all these costumes ready.

There were lots of difficulties and challenges with the costumes, tech, music, and sets, but all of these preparations came together in the end to create a spectacular show. Sam McGarvey said his favorite part was the performances themselves. “I loved seeing how it all came together, so much beyond our expectations. It was a great joy to experience that with all these people that we were building the show with over many months. It was amazing to see the culmination of all our hard work.” The actors, crew, and directors did not stop working their hardest until things were ready. “There were a lot of stressful practices, but the production was very fun. It was a very satisfying way to end my high school career, I think,” said Spencer Armstrong, the Tall Oaks senior cast as Crutchie. There was an amazing range of voices, mixing together to form beautiful harmonies. The acting was executed skillfully by the cast, and the intricate dances made the show one of the most attended performances in the history of Red Lion musicals.

Mrs. Holt Former pharmaceutical saleswoman Denise Holt made a drastic career change when she left the world of sales to pursue teaching.

“G

rowing up in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, with a sister two years younger and a brother nine years older, I would say it was a half Christian household,” said Denise Holt, the high school biology and anatomy teacher. “My mom taught Sunday School, and she took us to church every week, but, sadly, my dad had a job that took him away on the weekends.”

“I asked Jesus to be my Savior in sixth grade. I had this peaceful feeling come over me, and that’s when I became a child of God.” As a teenager, Mrs. Holt was involved in the youth group at her church, and she went on local missions trips.

Mrs. Holt attended the University of Delaware for college. “Sadly, I did not get involved in any Christian organizations, and I was hanging out with a lot of the wrong people,” she explained. After graduation, Mrs. Holt got a job in pharmaceutical sales. “I probably got back to church when I

got engaged and was about to be married,” she said. “So, I started going back to church as a 24-year-old, and Mr. Holt and I found a church in Townsend where we lived after we got married.”

“There was a former student, Aaron Ray Ebreo.

His dad, Dr. Ebreo, was one of the pediatricians that I called on, and he is the one that raved about Red Lion Christian Academy.” At this time, her family was moving from Townsend to Bear, and they looked into Red Lion for her daughters, Taylor and Morgan. Taylor started at Red Lion in first grade and Morgan in kindergarten. Morgan and Taylor both attended Red Lion through graduation.

“I know that everyone is always talking about God’s plan versus my plan, and I definitely experienced this in 2008 and 2009,” Mrs. Holt said. Unfortunately, in 2008, she was laid off twice from the pharmaceutical industry after working in it for twenty years. “Being laid off twice in one year in the same industry, I finally got the

message that God was telling me: it was time for a career change.” She traveled frequently for work, missing time with her family, and thought a job closer to home would be a better option. “In 2009, I applied to be a substitute teacher because I never taught before, and I thought I should get some experience to see what teaching is about.”

She continued, “So I was really excited about teaching anatomy because that was my life for the past twenty years, and biology, of course, was my major so in 2010 that’s when I started as the biology teacher here.”

Mrs. Holt has been the anatomy and biology teacher since 2010. “I love encouraging students to pursue careers in the medical field because I know that people will always be sick, and people will always need medical people with lots of knowledge,” she said. Mrs. Holt loves the group of Christian friends she has made at Red Lion. “I love my coworkers, and I love the students here,” she said.

I see God’s plan unfolding in many ways every day in my life, and I am so glad that I am here instead of being in the cut-throat pharmaceutical world.

o I grew up in Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia in Delaware County. I was raised in a Christian home where my parents were both believers, and I got saved when I was 12. I went to Valley Forge Christian College for education. I met my husband at college. His best friend and my best friend were dating, so they broke up, and then we got married.

He went to the public school system, and I taught Christian school in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was in inner-city public, and I was in inner-city private, so we would come home, and the stories were obviously different. I taught kindergarten for three years and first grade for two years.

“Then we adopted Zachary. We had tried to get pregnant for nine years. We were praying, and I said, ‘God change Bill’s heart,’ because I wanted to adopt or change my heart. So in May of 2005, God changed his heart and said we should pursue adoption. In June of 2005, someone came and said I have someone who needs to give up their baby. We met the birth mother in July. He was born in October, and three days later, we took him home. We moved to Middletown Delaware, when Zach was three months old. And a year and a half later, I thought I had the flu, and I’m not pregnant, and now there’s Samuel. So I stayed home and homeschooled them.

“About eight years later, my husband came home and said that he can’t do this anymore. God is the answer and he can’t tell his students. He said that he wanted to teach at a Christian school, so he applied at Red Lion. He got hired in 2015.

There was also a preschool opening, so I got hired as a preschool teacher, and then the boys came to school when they were in second and fourth. I taught preschool for a year at Red Lion Campus, and then they moved me to the church campus, and I taught there for two years.

“A few weeks into September of this year school year, they needed to fill a position here at

Tri-State, so they offered me the position which was a shock. I was a little nervous because I had never done third grade. First grade was the highest I had ever done, but it has been awesome.

I really thought I would miss the little kids because they are just so cute, and they love you, so I was a little nervous how I would do jumping all the way to third, but they are just as sweet.

They are more independent, and I feel I can get a lot done with them and teach them a lot. The conversations about the Lord are deeper, and they ask a lot of questions. They are very curious and more so about their own salvation, not just the little Bible stories. It is deeper, and they have questions about their own faith, so it is really cool to be able to talk with them about that. This is such a good group of kids. There are only twelve of them, and it’s like a little family.

“That was the hardest nine years of my life waiting to have a baby. My boys are 13 and 11.

Zach is 13, and he is here. He does Journey half the day and then Tri-State which has been tough for him, but in a lot of ways very good. Samuel is at Red Lion with Bill so he has Mrs. Gioconda for half the day, and then he has his dad which is really fun.

“But it’s neat to see God’s hand from when we got married and couldn’t get pregnant and how that all worked out, and then I’m going to be home and then God led us different ways. It’s really cool to see. We have a mind-set of what life is going to look like, and then it doesn’t turn out that way. Then you think, ‘Oh, it’s not going to be good,’ but it’s so much better following His story.”

MRS. P Students know her as Mrs. P because the name Petrauschke is just a little tough to pronounce for the third graders in Mrs. Shelly Petrauschke’s class. Mrs. P tells about growing up, meeting her husband, raising her two boys, and her teaching career.

On Cleveland Ave., among the wild party houses near University of Delaware, there is a house that is distinctively Christian called Reach UD. Grady Hackett is one of the fourteen UD students that shares the love of Christ with other college students.

G

rady Hacket is a junior at the University Of Delaware. He is originally from Pennsylvania. “I am studying psychology in college. My plans are to go and be a counselor psychologist in the army, so when I graduate I don’t really know where I will be, but hopefully I can work with some mental health awareness and try to just help out.” Grady attends Reach Church. He said, “I moved to UD during my second semester of my freshman year back in 2017. I was checking out churches, and by the beginning of my sophomore year, I started going to Reach Church.

I would miss a couple of times, but I really liked it there, and I would keep coming back.” He started going there about a year and a half ago. Grady said, “I heard there was a house where you can live with thirteen other kids, and it is in a good location on campus, and it is where you can do ministry and live life together.” The second he heard about this, he immediately wanted to sign up. He went and talked to Mr. Schoenberger to introduce him and get help with the application progress. A week later, he found out he got in.

He said, “It was such a blessing.” At the Reach UD house, there are fourteen people who live there. There are six girls that live on the top floor and eight boys that live on the bottom floor. The age of the people who live there varies.

Grady said, “This is the first year I have been there and the first year they have been doing it. I moved in during the month of August, and I’ll

be there for the rest of this year and next year.” At the house, they spend time together, have Bible studies together, and have dinner together. “It is a great home base,” he said. From there, they go out, and they bring people to church and invite people back to the house and try to have a fun time while learning about Jesus. Grady said his favorite part about living at the house is “we have a common room, which is a big living room in between all the apartments. It has a couch and a dining room table and a kitchen. I love walking in and going through the common area just to see if anyone else is home, and there is always like two or three new people just hanging out and sitting in there playing music or watching a movie or just hanging out. It feels like every time you open the door there’s always some random person that I have never seen before sitting in our house which is awesome. That really goes to show how the people in the house are always trying to bring new people in and kind of invite them into a space where it’s ‘Wait, there are no beer bottles on the wall or anything like that.’ I mean we’re on a college campus so there are a lot of people who like to drink and party. I just think it is really cool to invite people into a house where everyone goes to church and praises God.” Grady said, “I kind of think we’re like changing the culture of UD’s campus just like a little bit. By the grace of God, 10 -15 new faces have started coming to church with us on Sundays and going to Bible studies and small groups on Tuesday nights just from our efforts of inviting people. The house kind of just enables us to do that.”

“My grandmother on my mom’s side came from Nigeria to London when she was about nineteen years old, so my mom’s side was born in London, and my dad’s side was all born in Nigeria,” said Chizaram Anyaegbu, or Chizzy, senior at Red Lion Christian Academy. She continued, “I was born in London, and then my parents moved to America and the rest of my brothers were born here.” Recently, she traveled to a village near the city of Umuahia in Nigeria to visit with some of her extended family. “When I went, most of my cousins were there, so it was kind of a big family reunion,” she explained.

“Everything is very traditional, but there’s no internet, so you have to talk to people. You can’t get away with being on your phone.” She continued, “If you go to the village, everybody, one way or another, is related or you know each other so everybody takes care of each other.” Not everywhere in Nigeria is like the village that her family visited. Chizzy explained, “When you go into the city, it’s very different. People are more glammed up. It’s more like city life. You can find a lot. It is a very industrialized city.”

“They are very touchy,” Chizzy continued. “I know here you mind your business. You don’t really touch people you don’t know, but there, everybody, if your dress strap was hanging down, they’ll fix it for you.” Another thing that Chizzy was shocked by was the driving.

“The driving was pretty wild there,” Chizzy explained. “We are very used to order in things, but there is no order in the driving. There are no stop signs and no traffic lights. Usually, it’s two lanes, and if you are driving

on the right side of the road and the person in front of you is slow, you can just come over into the left side and just cut in front of them.” She added, “Or if you are driving through a market, you can kind of go between the different kiosks, so the driving is very wild.”

“I’ve done three seasons of cheer, one for a basketball season and two football seasons,” Chizzy said. This past football season, Chizzy was a co-captain with Zaina Greene-Johnson.

She explained, “It was a good learning experience on how to manage people.” Also, Chizzy plays soccer. “I have played soccer for five years, and I usually play left or right midfield.” She continued, “I enjoy it, and the team dynamic is fun and supportive.”

Chizzy has been involved in multiple fine arts productions. She was in Newsies this year as Mush, a newswoman. “It’s a good experience, and you get really close to your cast mates because you spend so much time together. It’s sad for it to be over.” Along with participating in musical productions, Chizzy plays the violin. “I have been playing the violin with the Tall Oaks orchestra for the past seven years.” Chizzy explained, “I started out with lessons in sixth grade, and as you get older, you start to learn more complex pieces. Our director, Mr. Carrol, is very passionate about our orchestra.” Chizzy also liked the various field trips they have been able to go on, such as competitions and singing at nursing homes.

Chizzy has five brothers and a sister. “It’s loud.” She continued, “I like it because I’m never alone, but it’s never quiet.” After graduation, Chizzy wants to pursue psychology with a focus in pre-med at either the University of Delaware or the University of North Carolina.

Before coming to Red Lion, Chizzy attended Tall Oaks. “I left because I needed a different curriculum for my intended career path. I think Tall Oaks is a good basis, but if you are not going into the liberal arts, you need a different path,” Chizzy explained. Because of the opportunity within Reach Christian Schools, Chizzy was able to transfer to Red Lion and benefit from the different opportunities for growth.

Chizzy is involved in many activites and is an honor roll student. This past year she has played violin in the orchestra, was on the homecoming court, acted in the school musical Newsies, cheered on the cheerleading squad, and played on the soccer team.

One of the beloved teachers at Glasgow Christian Academy is Dr. Nabil Warsal.

Dr. Warsal’s full-time job is as a general surgeon at Christiana Care, but once a week, he comes in to teach anatomy and physiology as well as physics.

Dr. Warsal was born and grew up in Egypt.

“I

had a happy childhood. I was raised in a Christian home with my parents and four other siblings, one brother and three sisters, and I was the middle child.

I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior at the age of thirteen at a revival crusade in Cairo. I was very active with our youth

of Glasgow Christian Academy, if I would be willing to teach anatomy and physiology to the 11th and 12th grade high school students. At that time, the teacher that taught this course had to leave. I said yes for at least one year, but here I am four years later. I could not have done this job without my able co-teacher Mrs. Betsy Marks who is an outstanding teacher and administrator. She also teaches physics. I really enjoy teaching the students, I love the school, the administrative staff, and, of course, the subject that I teach.

“In my spare time I love to paint. I never had formal training.

Recently, I started painting portraits. My painting medium is acrylics.

“My wife is a registered nurse.

Her name is Donna. I have a son Jonathan who was born with a mild to moderate case of cerebral palsy. He loves music, and he is involved with the recording ministry at our church. He’s a big help to his mother and me at home.

“Fourteen years ago, I had the chance to serve as a surgeon at a mission hospital in Aswan, Egypt. I answered the call and usually go for two weeks doing all kinds of surgeries. I love the staff, and, above all, I love the people and the patients. At present I’m a full-time general surgeon in private practice.

“I love teaching here at GCA. I love it. It’s a great privilege, and it’s an honor to teach these students who are really well disciplined. They represent what good Christian students should be.”

“I attended Cairo University Medical School for seven years.

After I graduated, I spent one year in an American mission hospital outside Cairo working with a board-certified surgeon. I came to the United States to pursue my postgraduate training in general surgery. I started with an internship for one year, and then did my general surgery residency at the University of Maryland for four years.

“I always wanted to be a surgeon. My aunt developed breast cancer when she was thirteen years old. She had surgery and radiation therapy, but she succumbed to the disease one year later. That really sealed my interest to pursue residency training in general surgery.

“I am a general surgeon and can do any abdominal surgery including bowel, stomach, gallbladder, head and neck surgery, and hernia surgery of all kinds.

“Four years ago, I was asked by Mrs. Leanne Betters, one of the directors

eth McGarvey, the nurse on the Red Lion Campus, has always had a heart for others, wanting to help them through injuries and tough times. She serves students in all grades from both Red Lion and Tall Oaks. Students come to her with all sorts of complaints, ranging from fevers to recess injuries. She also administers medication and treatments to students who need it throughout the school day. The students can always count on her to give them what they need.

From a young age, Mrs. McGarvey knew that she wanted to become a nurse. Even as a young girl, she always cared for others. “My friends from elementary school recall instances in second grade where I was always the first person to help a hurt kid on the playground. From my youngest years, it was all I ever wanted to do. In high school, I was offered an internship to see what I wanted to do in life. My parents were teachers, and yet I wanted to be a nurse, so I said to myself that I should probably test the waters before I was sure of this. So, I shadowed teachers for a few weeks to see if I wanted to be a teacher. I did another internship in nursing my senior year, and I just loved it. It was a no brainer pursuing it in college.�

Mrs. McGarvey attended Wheaton College, a Christian university in Illinois. There, she met her husband, Pastor Chris McGarvey. They got married before graduating from Wheaton. Mrs. McGarvey then attended medical school, while her husband went to seminary. The McGarveys went on to have five children: Hannah, Sam, Lily, Jono, and Ben. After living in Illinois for ten years doing college ministry, Mr. McGarvey was offered a position as senior pastor at Bethel Baptist Church in Wilmington, Delaware. At the time, her oldest three were all in school. In coming to the East Coast, they began looking to continue the classical education they started in Illinois. “One of the first panic moments was ‘Do they have a classical school in Delaware?’ and we found this classical school. We were pursuing classical education and were just so thrilled that Tall Oaks was here.”

In addition to her role as a nurse, Mrs. McGarvey is the junior varsity volleyball coach for Red Lion athletics. She comes from a very athletic background. Her father was a football coach. “I was the tomboy of all tomboys. I lived on the football field. I wanted to play football but ended up playing volleyball, basketball, and softball in high school. In college, I played

basketball and softball. I loved it.” Mrs. McGarvey never intended on becoming a coach, but when Tall Oaks needed a volleyball and basketball coach, she was able to step in. “I actually didn’t go looking for it, even though my dad and my brothers became coaches. It was really just a need that came up. So when Hannah was in fifth grade, they needed a middle school basketball coach. I stepped up and ended up coaching for six years at Tall Oaks. And in our last two years before we joined Red Lion, we lost our varsity volleyball coach, and they were going to end up canceling the season. And so I stepped in and ended up coaching both. I would’ve never pictured myself being a volleyball coach because basketball was my sport.”

Not only does Mrs. McGarvey teach the girls on her team about the sport that they all love, but she also mentors and disciples them in their walk with Christ. “I love the discipleship side of coaching. For two hours every day, I am able to talk to the girls about anything. It is not just volleyball; it is volleyball and Jesus infused. We bring Christianity into our sport. I am able to teach how to have no regrets and that playing to the glory of God in a great thing.”

A

fter graduating from Red Lion, I attended and graduated from the University of Delaware as a fashion merchandising major, led in my campus ministry while a student, and served overseas for two months in two countries in southeast Asia. I have had several jobs, first in the retail industry, then doing wedding cake design, and now working in higher education admissions. I also met my best friend while serving at BSM—Nick—who is now my husband. We are currently applying for a two-year overseas missions position with the International Missions Board. Our prayer and desire is to serve the Lord overseas and to see if God leads us into long-term ministry there.

Marriage is a wonderful experience of grace and the gospel. It is a blessing to be married to my best friend. Thank God for his grace poured out on us in Jesus Christ. Investing in and being a part of a strong church community has been essential for our relationship and growth. I have seen several classmates from Red Lion get engaged or married and even have children. Thank you to Facebook for keeping me up to date!

I am thankful first for the ways that my classes at Red Lion prepared me and set me up for success at the University of Delaware. Second, I am grateful for the consistent biblical teaching and personal investment that many of the faculty made in my life, challenging me to get connected and stay connected while in college. As a senior,

I began to develop friendly relationships with my teachers. I still look back to this day and remember conversations that I had with Mrs. Norris. I remember her kindness in asking me questions about my life and sharing her own testimony. I am thankful for her for taking the time to tell me that she was praying for me. I also remember Miss Geshay hosting a Bible study for girls in her classroom. I was encouraged by the ways she chose to reach us during what can be a confusing season of life. In addition, I am grateful for my Bible class with Dr. Cheadle. I still have the book we studied - World Religions 101. I am thankful for that time in being challenged to learn and study about other religions and how to “always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15).

My experience with the Baptist Student Ministry in college was life-changing. I grew in my understanding of the Bible, evangelism, discipleship, servant-leadership, and missions. While in BSM, I had the opportunity to lead in several capacities. I spent time as the event coordinator, the missions coordinator, and also as a women’s Bible study leader. God used this ministry in a powerful way in my life. I believe that every Christian college student should invest in a campus ministry. At BSM, I was surrounded by others who sought to know and live out God’s word. I was challenged

to not waste my college years and to use every moment I could for the glory of God. As a servant-leader, I was challenged to invest in others’ lives in discipleship relationships and even had opportunities to serve overseas and work with international students on-campus. BSM played a huge role in my life and continues to be my best memory of college. My time serving overseas was the time when God grew my faith the most.

During my first trip in southeast Asia, I worked with two other girls, focusing on sharing the gospel to the local women around us. We were assigned a specific people group in hopes of reaching them with the truth of the Gospel. Prior to both of these trips to Muslim-majority countries, my team and I went through training to prepare us for the mission ahead. While there, we spent time with the locals, living with them, and sharing God’s word at every opportunity. It was a fruitful time of depending on God in a different culture, working with teammates, and growing in God’s word. My time overseas shaped the way I saw the gospel in my everyday life. When I returned, I felt an urgent need to reach internationals right on my campus. My husband Nick and I are applying to be journeyman overseas with the International Missions Board. We are currently going through a lengthy application process in hopes to serve for two years in a closed country in southeast Asia.

am currently a Computer Scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

My primary job is researching and developing software for the world’s fastest supercomputers.

In particular, I am helping create a next-generation resource manager and batch job scheduler. I joined LLNL last year after graduating from the University of Delaware with a Ph.D. in Computer Science.

Red Lion helped me get where I am today by giving me a solid educational foundation. My teachers went above and beyond to provide me with every advantage coming out of high school.

They helped accelerate me two years beyond the usual math curriculum and graduate with six college calculus credits under my belt. The college credits that I received while at Red Lion gave me a head start on my bachelor’s degree and ultimately shaved an entire semester off my master’s degree.

In addition, the computer courses that I took at Red Lion sparked my initial interest in coding and were a significant influence in my decision to study computer science in college.

I attended the University of Delaware where I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education with a concentration in General & Choral Music. During my college years, I had the opportunity to travel to China and Spain for choral competitions, and I graduated cum laude in 2010.

My first job was teaching general music and choir at Talley Middle School from 2011-2014.

In 2013, I enrolled at Wilmington University.

I graduated in 2014, earning my Master of Education degree with a concentration in Educational Technology. In the fall of 2014, I began teaching music at Mount Pleasant High School.

I am now settled with my family in Bear, Delaware, right down the road from where I spent so many of my teenage years. I met my husband Billy in 2014, and we got married a year later. Billy and I welcomed our son Luke into the world in March 2018. After Luke was born, I decided to leave my teaching job to be a stay-at-home mom for the time being. I am also teaching music part time at Caravel Academy.

The Lord has blessed me immensely over the years. I can still remember walking the halls of Red Lion, wondering what God had planned for my life. I was shown time and again that God’s plan was always best. I am excited to see how God will work in the next thirteen years.

ince graduating from Red Lion, I have become a client associate on the Weisenfels Team at Merrill Lynch in Wilmington, DE. I graduated from Liberty University’s business school with a degree in Financial Planning and interned with Merrill Lynch during my summer breaks while in school. Upon graduation, I accepted a full-time position with Merrill Lynch in 2017. Today, my primary responsibilities consist of doing the equity trading for clients’ portfolios, helping retirees manage their income, and being the point person for any financial inquiry a client may have.

RLCA played a huge part in getting me to where I am today. I formed lasting relationships with many teachers during my time there as they helped challenge and grow me both academically and spiritually. I was placed on a fast track curriculum for math that put me two years ahead of the normal curriculum, which ultimately enabled me to graduate high school with eighteen college credits through Red Lion’s AP class offerings. My senior year I took an honors economics class which let students take part in the stock market game by giving us a virtual amount of money to invest in the market. This helped spark my interest in finance and my decision to ultimately graduate with a financial planning degree and begin a career in finance after college.
