Red Lion Events Aug. 26 SENIOR BBQ Mrs. Rupert, the senior adviser, gave the seniors their own barbecue during the first week of school. The seniors were allowed to eat outside during lunch on picnic tables as a senior privilege.

To celebrate the beginning of senior year, Mrs. Rupert helped the seniors put together a fun barbecue with hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and fun desserts. The seniors brought in all the food but Mrs. Rupert managed to surprise them with Rita’s water ice. This was a great way for the seniors to kick off their last year of high school.

Aug. 22 BACK TO SCHOOL BBQ The Glasgow Family of Schools welcomed back it’s students with a fun outdoor BBQ the day before the school year officially started. Tall Oaks and Red Lion students came together and were able to get to know one another through delicious food and good conversations. Students also got the chance to meet their teachers by following their schedules to each new class.

The seniors were also introduced to their sixth grade buddy for the year. The event was a great opportunity for students to say goodbye to summer and to get ready for the new school year.

SEE YOU AT THE POLE See You at the Pole is a national day of prayer for students to meet at the their school’s flag pole to pray for their school and the nation as a whole. On September 30th at 7:30 a.m., students gathered around the Red Lion campus flag pole.

This was the first year Tall Oaks students joined students from Red Lion for a time to reflect on the blessings God has given both schools. Ben Leary led a time of worship through song and Mr. Gibson led a time of school wide prayer.

Oct. 8 HOMECOMING DANCE The annual high school homecoming dance was held on October 8th. Freshmen through seniors danced the night away on the “Black and White” themed dance floor. Tall Oaks and Glasgow Christian were also invited to join. Many students brought dates or went with a group of friends to ensure a fantastic night with awesome people.

Oct. 13-14 8TH GRADE WILLIAMSBUG TRIP The eighth grade trip to Williamsburg on October 13 was a fun learning experience for all those who went. Walking around for six hours, the students learned a lot about colonial times and enjoyed a day of sight seeing. After an exhausting day, the eight graders stayed in a hotel, woke up the next day, and drove back to the school to be picked up by their parents. They returned home on October 14 after a historical experience.

Sandy Hill Aug. 31 MIDDLE SCHOOL RETREAT On the last day of August, the middle school students left campus for a day and headed to Sandy Hill Camp and Retreat Center. This was a day of spiritual renewal and fun activities. It was a great way for students to learn more about each other and also to grow closer to God. They participated in singing worship songs, listening to sermons, playing games, and eating food provided by the retreat center. The students came back late that afternoon after a full day.

Oct. 15 POWDER-PUFF FOOTBALL GAME October 15 was the first fund raiser of the year for the senior Costa Rica missions trip. The junior and senior girls went head to head in a powder puff football game. The senior girls ended up winning once again, scoring six touchdowns while the junior girls scored only three. Halftime entertainment was led by the junior boys who did a humorous routine.

Sept. 1 HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT The Red Lion high school students left at 8:15 a.m. on to head to Sandy Hill Retreat near North East, MD. The day consisted of two worship sessions led by a guest speaker.

In between sessions, the students competed as classes for points toward the color wars.

They played challenging games and went on adventurous scavenger hunts. Students also got free time to swim in the pool and play volleyball or basketball. The ninth through eleventh graders came back to school after dinner.

SENIOR RETREAT The seniors participated in and enjoyed the same worship sessions as the rest of high school but at five o’clock that day after everyone else left, the seniors stayed behind to work on class unity. They enjoyed a worship session around the campfire before bed. Early that morning, the seniors took to the ropes course and did team building exercises in order to restore trust and build unity in the class.

laudia Glover has been attending Red Lion Christian Academy since preschool. She has one sister, Lydia, who is in ninth grade. In January 2015, Claudia attended Puppy Club for the first time. Before she could get a puppy, she had to fill out an application to see if she was fit enough to take care of a puppy. The Seeing Eye has to make sure her house was fit and the dog will have a loving atmosphere. After the process, Claudia and her family got Brooke, a female German shepherd on August 31, 2015. Brooke got to attend football games and school events but never attended a real day of school. After 6 months, Brooke went back for her evaluation. The evaluation was for her vesting which consists of tests that evaluate where the dogs skills are. If they pass the evaluation then they will get vested which makes them an official Seeing Eye dog. In the beginning of September, Brooke went back to the Seeing Eye to but unfortunately she had a lot of medical problems such as allergies, so she was sent back to Claudia. The family decided to adopt Brooke, now she is a household pet.

THE TWIRLING SISTERS

Sydney and Maddie Berkey have been twirling baton since they were young girls

B

aton twirling proved to be a dangerous sport according to Maddie and Sydney Berkey. Sydney said, “I was going to pick something up one time and one of the older girls swung her baton back and the bottom just went into my eye... it was pretty painful, but you know what, I didn’t have a black eye,” They say it happens all the time so it’s a mutual agreement between twirlers to not get mad when it happens.

No matter how many bruises they got, they still love twirling. Maddie and Sydney have been twirling since they were six years old at Victoria’s Dance Stars.

Sydney said that she saw a class of older girls doing it while she was at gymnastics and she wanted to start right away. Now they march in parades at Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. They also do a big recital at the end of the year.

Maddie and Sydney have their favorite tricks that they do in their routines that include “Toss Turn Arounds” where they throw their baton in the air and spin around as many times as they can. The tricks are fun but they aren’t always easy. Maddie said, “We had this big partner toss in our recital, and we all threw the batons up and they all dropped. So you just have to keep going.”

Maddie said that the art of baton twirling is dying off. “I’m glad that I’m part of the dying art... because then it’s something unique I can tell my kids and my grand kids that I did.”

Of all the new faculty Tall Oaks has welcomed to its staff this school year, no one has had to deal with more stress and uncertainty than Dr. David Haines. Haines is currently teaching 6th-8th grade Latin, 7th grade History of Apologetics, and 12th grade Greek, not from his classroom, but from his current home in Quebec, Canada via Skype. He is a Canadian citizen and is actively waiting to receive a work visa to allow him to move to the States and teach at Tall Oaks in a normal setting.

Dr. Haines was born and raised in Canada and has maintained a strong faith in Christ his whole life. “I grew up in Ontario.

I grew up in a very Christian family with a very Christian background. We went to church all the time; if the doors were open, we were there.”

“When I was eleven years old, I started going to a camp called Jim Club. It’s a camp with a purpose to train young men to be leaders in their churches.” Dr. Haines attended the camp for most of his youth and credits it with teaching him how to speak, perform magic, ventriloquism, but most importantly, how to preach and memorize the word of God. He is also an avid juggler and was first exposed to juggling at the camp but did not perfect the skill until he attended additional Gospel Magic conferences.

After high school, Dr. Haines attended college in New Brunswick for three years and traveled to Quebec on a missions trip in his second year. “When I got there, I couldn’t speak a word of French,” he recalled. “Quite literally, I struggled throughout the summer trying to present the Gospel to people in Quebec. For the most part, people in Quebec don’t speak English very well. There are some that do, the majority don’t.”

During this time, Dr. Haines met his wife, but returned to New Brunswick to finish his third year. He moved to Quebec but still was not very fluent in French. “My first year in Quebec was absolutely horrible. I was learning [French] on the spot.

When I began preaching, my first sermons in French were almost incomprehensible to the people I was speaking to.

They definitely showed a lot of grace.” After learning French through full immersion over several years, he became fluent in two languages and capable of teaching two others. Even still, he claimed to know “a bit of Spanish” and would also like to eventually learn German and Syriac.

The situation Dr. Haines is in right now is not ideal, to say the least. He is currently living with his parents-in-law and sold his house in July. “We don’t have a house; all of our stuff is packed into my parents-in-law’s garage.” He has no idea when his visa is coming. In the meantime, he is content to interact with his students on Skype in English from 8:00 to 12:10 every weekday, then revert back to speaking French as he continues his life in Quebec. With or without a visa, Dr. Haines will continue to faithfully serve the Lord through his work at Tall Oaks, even if it needs to be done over the Internet.

Miss Brittany Robinette got engaged over the summer

f you walked into youth group and saw this random guy working in the sound booth, do you think you would marry him? Well, that is what happened to Brittany Robinette. But of course, there is a back story.

She and Kyle Graham, her now fiance, met at youth group in ninth grade when they were thirteen years old. They began to grow closer as friends through the leadership team.

As they began to grow closer together Kyle expressed to her that he liked her. It was not until their second year of college when they started dating. “There was a switch,” she said. She understood that God put Kyle in her life to marry him.

This past August, Kyle took Brittany to the beach. This beach is also the same place that she told him she liked him.

He told her, “Go down to the water and I will meet you there.” Brittany, unknown of what was happening, watched Kyle get down on one knee and said, “This is where we decided to start dating and this is where I want to propose to you and marry you.” Like a scene right out of a movie, she said, “YES!” Like any wife-to-be, wedding planning is hard and stressful but how is it for a teacher? With lesson plans and seating arrangements for the reception, one would think it would be stressful for Miss Robinette. “I am pretty laxed about wedding planning,” she said. “I am more concerned about the honeymoon,” she stated.

In marriage, God is the most important thing with someone you love. “We are looking for a church home because we want to use our gifts together as husband and wife, serving in a church together, that is what is really important to us.”

Next school year, Miss Robinette will have her name changed to Mrs. Graham. “I am going by ‘Mrs. G,’ I have decided.” Kyle and Brittany were meant to be, even when they did not know it. Around this time next year there will be a Mrs. G teaching your history class.

“God really showed me that Kyle will be my husband.”

ast year Mrs. Becky Reed, the middle school Bible teacher, introduced her step daughter, Alyssa Reed, to Mr. Eustace Beazer, the physical education teacher. Little did Alyssa and Eustace know that one day they would be sharing their lives together.

Alyssa Reed and Eustace Beazer met at church on Sunday with the help of Mrs. Reed. They talked for some time at church that Sunday, and soon after, Eustace was invited to join their family for Easter dinner; this ended up being their first “date.” After a few months of dating, he knew that he loved Alyssa and that she was the one God has chosen to be his wife. After he talked to some of his coworkers about his feelings for his girlfriend, he decided to take the next step to love.

The only thing left to decide was when to pop the question. He had planned on proposing around the time of the Savage Race that they participated in, but he felt like she would know. Being one who likes surprises, Eustace decided to hold off on the engagement.

Over the summer, Mr. Beazer took Alyssa on a date to Longwood Gardens with the intent of proposing. He had an idea that he wanted to ask her to be his wife under a gazebo. He named the gazebo the “Love Temple,” but he had trouble finding it that day.

About an hour later, in ninety degree temperatures, he and Alyssa finally found themselves under the “Love Temple.” He asked a woman nearby to take a video. After a few mishaps with the nice stranger taking the video, Mr. Beazer went back to

the gazebo and finally dropped to his knee to propose.

Alyssa said, “yes” before he even got to ask the question. “She was more excited just to see me get down on one knee,” Eustace said. When he eventually got the chance to ask, she said, “Yes, of course!”

They are currently planning their wedding set for April 15, 2017. Mr. Beazer and his soon-to-be Mrs. are very excited to see their families come together to celebrate their relationship and the start of the next chapter of their lives together. After the wedding celebration, they will fly to Antigua for their honeymoon.

Eustace said, “Without God, there is no relationship.” God has to be the cornerstone of any relationship. They will look to Him for guidance as they make all their decisions. Being a part of this generation in which many do things without God, they are making sure to keep Him at the center of their relationship. They don’t want their marriage to fail as do many who go about things the wrong way.

Because of this, they are currently going through the process of premarital classes so they will be ready to resolve any conflicts that may arise in married life.

Both Eustace and Alyssa are very excited for their upcoming wedding and having their families be together as one. This wedding will be not only for love but for fun. “It is going to be a ‘lituation’,” Mr. Beazer said.

Spotlight on House of Kepler

s new school years roll around, new students and rising middle school students were randomly assigned as a member of one of the four different houses that make up Tall Oaks Classical School. These houses are: Kuyper, Kepler, Wilberforce, and Edwards. In an attempt to bring unity among the house’s old and new members, there was an “initiation process.” This initiation process would serve as a reminder what was the original mission of the house system.

The houses were created as a unifying gesture with the hope of bringing students of all ages together so that they may grow in their Christian faith as one body. The newest members had two weeks in between the house lunches to complete tasks which they chose out of a bowl. Some students had to write multiple love letters to Dr. Dernlan, take selfies with the goats that roam around the campus, or wear full winter clothes (gloves, hats, scarves, and jackets) to school everyday.

Once they all joined back together after the two weeks, they celebrated the newest members with a party, and laughed together at the pictures taken of everyone’s completed challenges. To instill the unity aspect even more than before, the house of Kepler created a Big Brother- Big Sister system so that students could connect more with one another. Each older student was assigned a younger student within the house in order to grow closer with them. They wrote encouraging letters, decorated lockers, prayed for one another, and offered homework help.

The House Day Games

“Don’t mess with Kepler, don’t feed the bears”

O

n a warm fall afternoon, the House of Kepler walked down to the turf ready to compete in the competition that the day was to hold.

High above the house, Chair Noah, held a lifesized stuffed bear wearing a Kepler house shirt, a bow tie, and many necklaces. Behind Noah, there seemed to follow a sea of blue and red clad students.

“Don’t mess with Kepler, don’t feed the bears” rang throughout the campus as they made their way down to the turf. During house day, students competed in tournament style rounds of capture the flag. Every student participated in the event, and each house cheered on the other houses while they were participating. We were given 15 minutes to attempt to capture the other house’s flag, and to attempt to keep their own flags by their sides. This

was all in a great effort to win the Headmaster’s Cup, which is awarded at the end-of-year awards ceremony.

Kepler started the afternoon by taking on Kuyper, then battled for third place against the house of Wilberforce. Although they did not come out victorious in the tournament, they bonded in strategizing and preparing for this event. Kepler quickly learned that there was no way for them to do their best if only half of the house participated.

They worked together to finish off the afternoon.

Every member of the house helped make the day unique by making posters, buying accessories, painting faces, or making pins. Events like House Day were a time to sit back and watch, so that the true colors of the students can be seen. Although houses competed against one another, everyone cheered each other on, and worked together to bring ultimate glory to God.

“Kepler House is an environment where 6th graders and 12th graders can talk easily to one another, both as mentors and friends.”

HISTORY Johannes Kepler, the house’s namesake, is remembered for discovering the three laws of planetary motion. Kepler was a strong man who defended his faith throughout his life, and he saw his work as a fulfillment of his Christian duty to understand God. Kepler was chosen as a namesake four years ago hoping to mimic his steadfastness in faith in all that they do.

“I’m really excited to start growing the program again.”

Mr. Nathan Gioconda

M

r. Nathan Gioconda is not only a new teacher at Red Lion, but he is also a returning alumni.

Mr. Gioconda graduated in 2009 and was taught by some of the teachers that are still working here. When he was a student at this school, he was in choir and other areas of the arts. Now, he professionally performs opera.

He’s been in the Baltimore Concert Opera and a D.C. opera group. He has also had many great experiences. As a music teacher now, he has many great plans for the department and desires to get more people interested.

“We just had more people to do it,” says Mr. Gioconda. He hopes to bring the music program back into its former glory, and is encouraged that more people will want to join and see the amazing things a choir, band, marching band, and theatre group can do. By being a new teacher and instituting a new way of doing things, he thinks that it will draw in more students and viewers of the concerts and plays.

ACSI was one of Mr. Gioconda’s favorite competitions in which the choir was able to perform while he was a student, and he is excited for the Red Lion choir to go and continue to get the experience at this type of venue. Other new groups that have formed include the new pep band, and hopefully a marching band. Along with this new part of the music department, he is starting up the fine arts booster and Tri-M. This is a new program that is nationally recognized in which students have access to music gear, scholarships, and even varsity status in an area of the arts.

The musical this year will have a live band that will include teachers from here and musicians outside of the school. He also knows many other people, even some professional musicians, that will help make the musical an amazing show.

Mrs. Thabital Moses

M

rs. Thabital Moses came to Red Lion for the first time this year. Her three children attend Tall Oaks Classical School. Her children are in 3rd, 8th, and 10th grade respectively.

Mrs. Thabital Moses teaches consumer math and has discussions with the kids about their financial goals. She also teaches high school and middle school level math.

The consumer math class is a video class by national radio host Dave Ramsey that gives high school students a better chance to stay out of debt and have a better, more successful future.

Mrs. Moses has two main goals for her first year. She wants to teach every child what he or she needs to learn in math. She also prays for her students to see God work in their lives and to change their lives.

Not a native to the United States, Mrs. Moses was born in the southern part of India. She moved to the U.S. in 2008. Moving to the U.S. was not easy for her. “The first night that I arrived here I saw snow for the first time.

We were outside and it was freezing that night. It was really funny. That first snow was awesome. I was so glad to see what God has done and the wonders of what he has made. Where I lived in India the temperatures were over 100 degrees except for our winters where the temperatures would be in the 70’s.”

Her two oldest children were born in India and her youngest was born in the United States. She said, “My children like to visit India but I don’t think they would like to stay.

Her marriage to her husband was an arranged marriage as is the custom in India. They didn’t meet each other until the day they got engaged. After the engagement, they don’t see each other again until the wedding day. “We had over 1,000 people at the wedding.”

Abby Tokarski, a Red Lion student, and Rebekah Orlando, a Tall Oaks student, have quickly become good friends Abby: Through field hockey this year, I've gotten to know Rebekah Orlando. It's honestly been one of the coolest things to experience. While we don't see much of each other during the school day, we get to bond every day after school in sports. This was her first year playing, so I have enjoyed having the opportunity to help her play and get to know her. Something I love about Rebekah is what a steadfast friend she is. In little time, we have bonded significantly, and I'm able to open up to her about many things. She constantly encourages me as a

friend, but also as a sister in Christ, sharing Bible verses and being able to laugh in all kinds of situations.

I really hope to continue our friendship even after the season ends. When we graduate, we hope to stay in touch through little things like texts, phone calls, and coffee dates. While many of us at Red Lion were slightly hesitant about the merge, it's so refreshing to build new relationships such as the solid friendship with Rebekah. One of the highlights of my day is when we get to see each other in the hallway as her class is going to lunch, and I head to English. We wave, burst out laughing, and catch up on our lives in 30 seconds.

Rebekah: This is my first year playing field hockey.

At first I was really nervous to. Not only was I playing a sport that involved running (haha) but I was playing with people I didn't know. I was the only person from

Tall Oaks on the team and a senior. Needless to say, I was more than anxious. However, the moment I stepped onto the field, I was welcomed by a group of smiles and lots of encouragement. The girls on the team were so kind to me. They helped me become a better player little by little. I have formed many friendships with the girls on the team, but specifically I have formed a strong bond with Abigail Tokarski.

Abby and I quickly got to know each other and soon became late night texting buddies. She's always there to hear me talk about whatever, and our conversations have gone beyond just the basic "how are you?" She makes me smile after a boring day at school and hanging with her at practice is easily one of the best parts of my day. Seeing her at lunch for one minute just isn't enough. She's become such an amazing friend that she even said she was basically an Oaker. Oaker or Non-Oaker I love you Abby! I’m gonna miss you when the season is over!

PRAYER CONVOCATION

By Emma Mercer The Prayer Convocation, on August 25, brought both of the schools on the Red Lion campus together in prayer. Each student was given a list of important topics to cover in their prayer. Tall Oaks and Red Lion students were asked to mix together as they sang and prayed. Prayer was guided by Dr. Dernlan.

Tall Oaks eleventh grader Hannah McGarvey said, “The prayer convocation was really nice. It was great to meet new people. I sat with the tenth graders and got to meet a lot of Red Lion people. It was great meeting all the Red Lion students especially after hearing about the school for so long.

It was an amazing experience, praying together and getting the opportunity to unite in the Lord as brothers and sisters in Christ. We prayed for the upcoming year, administration, and even the leaders of our country.”

Zach Barbin, who is a senior at Red Lion said, “At first I sat mostly with my Red Lion friends because I was a bit nervous to introduce myself to the Tall Oaks students but then I began talking with them. It was good for everyone to get together and pray as a whole family of schools. I think we should continue this tradition. I wouldn’t mind doing it every month. I think we should also invite Glasgow Christian to join us.”

Speaking at Grandparent’s Day on September 23, Dr. Tim Dernlan speaks to the filled Pusey Center after he is officially named the head of schools.

On September 23, the school board introduced the New Head of Schools, Dr. Tim Dernlan. A former headmaster at Tall Oaks Classical School, Dr. Dernlan is now the head of all the four schools under the umbrella of the Glasgow Family of Schools. The four schools are Glasgow Christian Academy, Journey Christian Academy, Red Lion Christian Academy, and Tall Oaks Classical School.

The inauguration ceremony took place during Grandparents Day, held in the Pusey Center on the Red Lion campus. The gym was filled with grandparents, students, teachers, and parents to witness the official recognition of Dr. Dernlan taking the role of Head of Schools.

Being the Head of Schools comes with great responsibility. “We are seeking to provide school choice in Christian education,” Dr. Dernlan explained. Trying to accomplish something new like adding different choices of Christian education is very different. “I do feel some pressure,” he said. Since there are no models of multiple schools with the same mission, it is going to be hard trying to set the pace of how to build the foundation of this project.”

So far there has been nothing but positive feedback with the work Dr. Dernlan is doing with the schools. With God’s help, Dr. Dernlan will continue to unite these schools to educate students, and that they love each other and God. www.glasgowfamily.com

Zach asked his girlfriend, Bella, to the homecoming dance on the way to Mrs. Stocker’s Political Science class. Bella had been anticipating this, but was just unsure of when he would ask. They were both very excited for the big night.

Being seniors, it was Zach and Bella’s last homecoming and also their most memorable. They were voted King and Queen by the Senior class, which was a great honor to the couple. When asked their favorite part of the evening, Bella simply said, “The Chick-Fil-A nuggets.”

During the week of homecoming, Caroline found out that her softball tournament scheduled for that weekend had been cancelled. She and Colin decided at the last minute to go to the dance together as friends. They both had a great time and really enjoyed dancing with their friends. At the end of the night, Colin and Caroline went to Applebee’s with many of the freshmen who attended the dance.

They really liked being able to spend time with their classmates outside of school and this ended up being their favorite part of the night.

Dresses Njambi Njaguna Njambi’s dad brought her dress back from Kenya two years ago to give her as a Christmas gift. This year, she decided to wear it to the homecoming dance. It was a beautiful white, lacy dress embellished with a gold belt buckle. She looked online for ideas on how she could best complete her look, and found a hairstyle she liked. She wanted to go for a “goddess” look, complete with gold jewelry in her hair. photo by Josh Maxson

The Executive Student Government officers, Jonathan Huey, Sydney Berkey, Courtney Dudley, and Rebecca Johnson, along with Miss Robinette, planned the homecoming dance. In the summer they met at school and chose the theme “Celebrate the Night in Black and White.” They chose the decorations for the dance and even made a few of the pieces themselves in the weeks leading up to the big night. This included a balloon arch over the dance floor and various black and white silhouettes. On the day of the dance, Miss Robinette came in with some volunteers to get everything ready. One of these volunteers was junior class chaplain Bria Dickerson. Bria came in at 8:00 a.m. to help blow up balloons, set up chairs, and more. She really liked how everything turned out and was glad she was able to take time out of her day to help out with everything for the evening.

Emma ordered a dress online like she has always done in the past. The one she found this year was gorgeous and only half the original price. She soon realized why she got such a bargain. The dress was made wrong!

The neckline of the dress was completely messed up. Being so close to the date of homecoming, she took measures into her own hands and re-sewed the neckline herself.

Juli got her Homecoming dress at the Lily Pulitzer store at the King of Prussia Mall. It was a last minute purchase as she was desperately in need of a dress that met the guidelines set forth by the school administration. With the help of the workers, she was able to find a dress that she really liked. She liked how different it was and the bold, hot pink color. Juli had a great experience with the store’s customer service.

sisters The Small family made the decision to move to the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates “partially for my dad’s job, and partially because we wanted to share the Gospel,” says Julia. For the past ten years, Sophia and Julia Small lived in Dubai, where they first attended an international school and were later homeschooled.

Just before the start of this school year, they moved to America to begin their respective ninth and tenth grade years at Tall Oaks.

Since Julia and Sophia traveled to America each summer during their time in Dubai, moving to Delaware was “kind of an adjustment, but I’m kind of used to the adjustment so it’s not as hard,” Julia said. Nevertheless, the sisters have quite a unique perspective on America, Dubai, and some of their customs.

Cuisine Julia Very international. If I’m honest, I like Dubai food better because in America, everything has sugar in it, even if it really shouldn’t. I got an apple at WaWa and there was sugar on the apple. Our food is mostly imported from other countries.

The ‘good’ chips are from America so you find the ones with the little stamp on them that say “Exported” but they’re like $5 more.

Sophia Every summer I’d get so freaked out because I’d go and I’d grab a drink, and I’d look at the ingredients and I’d realize the difference between that very same drink in Dubai, over here it would kill you! When we were younger, we’d bring all our friends American candy that you couldn’t get there, and they’d all freak out. We have Twizzlers in Dubai now, but they’re still not as good. They’re British Twizzlers.

Dress Julia When I come [to America], I feel really weird because everyone’s dressed in shorts, and a plain gym shirt, and I try to dress nice because everyone in Dubai dresses somewhat nice. Not fancy, no one really wears gym shorts, but here every guy ever wears gym shorts, like, all the time. So that’s kinda weird.

Sophia Everyone wears jeans, like all year long.

Religion Sophia You could talk casually with someone about your views. They actually like to listen to your views. The Muslims are very respectful, but you just have to pay respect back. Everyone respects everyone else’s views, and you can talk to them about it, but you’re not necessarily always trying to change their minds.

Americans Julia They’re more friendly to strangers. They can go up to some stranger, and they act like they’ve known them forever. Americans don’t realize how loud they are until they go somewhere other than America. They’re very loud, especially with personal views and stuff like that.

Language Julia [In America] I can understand everyone around me. In Dubai, everyone speaks English, but most people’s first language isn’t English, so when they’re speaking to their friends, they’ll speak in Arabic or French or something. So when I come here it’s weird because I can understand everyone around me and everything they’re saying. Everyone has the same accent, and it’s kind of weird because normally the first question I ask a person in Dubai is “Where are you from?” but then I come here and I meet people and I’m like “Where are you from?” and they’re like, “I’m from here.”

Schedule Julia Our weekends are Friday to Saturday, not Saturday to Sunday. We have church on Friday because since the Muslim day of prayer is on Friday. Everyone has the weekend then. We have youth group on Thursday. So it was like a weekly thing where you go to youth group, then you wake up and have church the next morning and have the rest of the weekend off. So then I come here and I get to Friday and I’m like “Yay! Weekend!” and then I’m like “No!” Then I’ll go to youth group, and I’ll think I have church in the morning and then I have to wait two days.

It’s so confusing.

Sophia When it’s Monday, I’ll think it’s Sunday.

Holidays Julia The holidays are different. We wouldn’t get Memorial Day off or Labor Day. We get off for the sheikh’s birthday, and for Mohammed’s birthday. Ramadan was going on when we left so when I got to America, it was so weird because I was allowed to eat wherever I wanted and whenever I wanted because you can’t eat until it’s dark. You can eat in your own house, but if I were in the car I would have to put a hoodie over me.

Sophia [My friend and I] went off during Ramadan. We miscounted the end of Ramadan time, so we ended up waiting three hours for the restaurant because all the shops were closed.

Education Julia They don’t have schools like this in Dubai. They don’t have classical ones, and they definitely don’t have Christian ones. It’s a very futuristic place. They do have one Catholic school but that’s it. I don’t know if that’s even legal. You’d have to get permission from the sheikh. There are definitely no schools like Tall Oaks.

Sophia Tall Oaks is a place where you stay for a long time, but in Dubai people are always coming in and going so school systems are kinda based around that.

New is not just a word; new is also a state of mind. When one thinks of new kids, the first thing that comes to mind are these quiet people who keep to themselves. With these new kids it’s competley different and the complete opposite of quiet.

These new kids came from different schools and different environments. For example, unior David Willis, transfered from Caravel Academy, which is only minutes away from Red Lion. Mollie Betters transfered from Glasgow Christian Academy.

The reason some of these new students transfer to Red Lion is because of the Christian environment. Freshmen Matias Rubin, a transfer student from the country of Chile, said. “I like the friendly environment of Red Lion.” Attending Red Lion Christian offered some an opportunity to get away from the public school atmosphere. “I like the Christcentered atmosphere,” junior Mollie Betters said.

Some of the new students are exceptionally good at sports. For example, David Willis and the Hardcastle brothers, will help the baseball team continue their success from last year’s run in the state tournament. Zahmir and Shaelin plan to play for the basketball team and hope to help the team win another state tournament berth.

It is not easy to adjust to a new school. Welcome these new high school students to the school. Show them that Red Lion love and make them feel like they belong. The hope is that the new students will soon feel like family.

Megan McGraw From kindergarten to senior year, Megan has served God through her academics, generous spirit, and her work in the mission field.

Education

“In my years at Tall Oaks, I have learned so much and I am grateful for it. In my experience, I have learned the most important lessons in my theology classes.

Specifically, we are taught arguments to support Christianity and refutations against other arguments.

We are also taught how to respond to those who challenge our faith. This has been very helpful for me because I have been in situations where my faith was challenged, and I have had a good response to those challenges.”

Legacy “I am the Captain of the House of Kepler. Legacy for me is the most important thing. It has been a huge part of my life at Tall Oaks, such as knowing older students and teachers and having their mentorship.

I hope that as captain younger girls will come to me

and ask for help. I hope that I will be able to build relationships with the students in my house and they will, in turn, build similar relationships to be prepared when they are in leadership positions. Legacy is just so important at Tall Oaks. In fact, right now I am working on putting together a house service project to plant a Red Oak tree. I hope that it will unite my house and also give back to the Red Lion campus. We hope that it will make a mark, show that we really care, and also create a Kepler legacy. We want to leave an imprint on the future Red Lion and Tall Oaks students.”

Russia

“The past two summers I have spent two weeks in Russia on a missionary trip with my church and The Comfort Foundation. In Russia, we went to three different orphanages and taught camps that are similar to Vacation Bible Schools. We had a

communication station, gym class, arts and crafts, and general fellowship time. While we were there, a lot of us made personal connections with the boys and girls and still stay in touch to this day over Facebook.

I especially made personal connections with a little girl named Polina. I remember that she had cute red hair in braided pigtails. Even though there was a language barrier, we had a close relationship and hung out the majority of the day. I am not going back this summer, but I hope to go back in the future. It would be awesome if I could live there for a couple of years as an adult. In general, I noticed that Russian culture supported showing kindness to one another, especially in families. The last day was bittersweet. They ran to me and held on.”

Senior Year “The legacy I want to leave is to be known as a good person and a good Christian. I am continually working toward these goals. I want to work more in the mission field when I am older. As of right now, I am focusing on giving back to Tall Oaks which has given me so much in my fourteen years here.

My favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11 ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’

I love this verse because it reminds me that I am on this earth for a reason. God has a plan for my life.

Sometimes, I am discouraged when I feel out of place or that I have no purpose but knowing that God has a plan for me is very encouraging and assuring.

In the future, I hope to be a psychologist or social worker so that I can have the chance to know other people and their stories. I want to help other people and show them that there is hope. I want to show the world that God is a good and loving God and that He will use our lives for the ultimate good.”

Megan McGraw is a student at Tall Oaks Classical School. She began her education at Tall Oaks in kindergarten and has attended ever since. As a senior, she is now at her capstone of Tall Oaks education.

Her story is only a small glimpse into the ordinary life of an intelligent Tall Oaks girl with extraordinary life moments.

g c a student dylan morgan answers questions about playing so c c er Dylan Morgan, a 10th grade student at Glasgow Christian Academy, plays on the Red Lion soccer team helping them win, offering encouragement to his teammates, and training hard at practices for two years now. He has always loved sports and being active outside. Being athletic since he was young, he developed a love of soccer. Recently, a One Spirit staff member, Lilly Pollack, had an opportunity to interview him about his life in sports and his focus on the sport of soccer.

Lilly Pollack: How did you get involved in sports?

Dylan Morgan: I’ve always loved sports. My dad was really into them as well, and just growing up with that influence, being outdoors, and staying active a lot led me to start playing sports.

LP: How long have you been playing soccer?

DM: I’ve been playing soccer since I was four or five. I didn’t play for teams for a while, just backyard stuff, but I’ve never really not played soccer. I think I’ve been playing for around 12 years now.

LP: Do you play any other sports besides soccer?

DM: I like to play a lot of the different sports out there, not all for teams either.

Most of it is just backyard fun, but I’ve done flag and tackle football, roller hockey, archery, tennis, and a lot of others too.

LP: Do you plan to keep playing soccer through college?

DM: Yes, I would like to get a soccer scholarship. I think that would be great, and even if I don’t get one, I’ll still try out for the college’s team. I think it would be fun to play at a college level.

LP: What is your proudest moment in soccer?

DM: That’s a hard one. I’d have to say one of the highlights was my first goal with Red Lion against an opposing team because it was in a real game and not just a scrimmage or a backyard game.

I have a hero, but I do enjoy watching Cristiano Ronaldo who plays for Real Madrid. He’s one of the top players, so I like to watch him play and see what I can learn from him.

LP: Do you find it difficult to balance school, soccer, and a social life?

DM: Soccer does definitely take up a lot of time, but I learned how to manage my time years ago. That hasn’t been that much of problem this year with Red Lion, so I think I have that under control.

LP: What’s it like being on a team on and off the field?

DM: It definitely gives you a sense of purpose, and you know that what you do on and off the field affects your teammates LP: Has your walk with Christ affected how you play soccer?

DM: I’ve noticed that it has – yes. Going back to professional players, I’ve seen how a lot of them go onto the field with the intent to hurt people to win the game, and I’m not like that.

I don’t go into a game looking only to win but to have fun and play for God while others don’t care and are willing to hurt people to win.

LP: Do you have any words of advice for any young athletes out there?

Melinda’s Menagerie

ome of you may know Melinda Ward, a Glasgow Christian Academy student in the 11th grade. What you might not know, however, is how she spends her free time. At her home in Maryland, Melinda has what amounts to her own private zoo. We recently visited Melanie at home. Upon arrival, we were taken on a tour. Surrounding her house were a number of different animals varying in shape, size, and color. After wandering around the place and taking numerous pictures, we got straight to the interview.

Melinda answers some questions about the animals for which she cares

Q: What animals do you care for?

A: I care for goats, cats, chickens, ducks, dogs, a horse, and a donkey.

Q: How many animals do you own?

A: I own around 25.

Q. Did your love of animals inspire you to raise them?

A: Yeah, since I always had a knack for raising and caring for them.

Q. Do you attend any fairs with the animals?

A: I attend some in the summer; for example, the Cecil County Fair.

Q. How well do you stand amongst the competition?

A: I have quite a few champions. I did especially good this year. In fact, one of my goats won Grand Champion.

Q. Does caring for them help you achieve a better education?

A: It helps if you want to become a veterinarian.

Q. Do you perceive yourself acquiring a job with animals?

A: Not at the moment but that could change.

Q. Where do you obtain the animals from?

A: Most of them are from local breeders and private owners.

Q. On average, how long do you spend with them each day?

A: Different days we have different tasks for that day, but we usually spend about 3 hours with them a day.

Q. When did you start to care for them?

A: I started around 8 years ago with goats and increased gradually.

Q. Is there a uniqueness for each animal?

A: Yes, definitely.

Q. Do you consider this a hobby or a job?

A: I would say it’s more of a hobby than a job.

Q. Who got you interested in caring for the animals?

A: We moved here 17 years ago because my sister loved animals and wanted to raise llamas. After she got married, I decided to continue to care for them.

Q. Does anyone in your family help care for your animals?

A: My younger sister and my mother.

Q. How do achieve the income need to keep the hobby afloat?

A: Competitions and my mom helps pay, too.

We concluded the interview and decided to take a few action pictures of the horses, which included an adventurous horseback ride in the nearby woods. We then all sat around and talked for a bit until we noticed it was becoming increasingly late. We said our goodbyes to the animals and thanked Melinda for allowing us to interview her.

Reformation Day

“Reformation Day is a day when we at Tall Oaks celebrate Martin Luther nailing the 95 theses on the church door,” senior, Noah Pfenninger explained.

On this day, the four houses compete in different events such as archery, dodgeball, dance, and human chess. They also learn how to write in calligraphy. Along with this day, the students dress up as the people would do in the Reformation time period. “This is an event that brings community to our school and our houses,” Sophia Schmiedel said.

This day takes a lot of planning and requires a lot of help. Shelly Stone was the coordinator of the event. Her team was in charge of the feast and planning the competitions for the houses. “It is a dream to have this amount of space to work with,” Shelly Stone expressed.

Reformation Day is how Tall Oaks recognizes the nailing of the 95 theses and how it is important to understand that salvation comes through faith and not by works.
