World Missions Week

Senior Commissioning

Senior Missions Trip

Jan. 30 - Feb. 3 A week of devotions was specifically used to impact and touch the hearts of students.

Five missionaries shared what they do and the purpose they serve in furthering God’s ministry. This was specifically for the students who want to serve God in the mission field or even those who would feel God calling them through the speakers.

Each missionary served in a different missions field from India, Haiti, Wilmington, University of Delaware, and Manna Worldwide. Each missionary served God in the same way just through different people and cultures.

Feb. 8 Before leaving for Costa Rica, the seniors had a commissioning worship service on February 8. Friends and family came out to support the seniors and to pray over them before they left. They prayed that the gospel would be spread throughout the country and that God’s will would be done through the seniors. Along with prayer, there was also a message deliverd by Mr. DaQuan Gibson, and songs were sung by the Red Lion worship team.

Feb. 10 - 18 On February 10, the seniors met at Red Lion at 2:00 a.m. and headed for the Philadelphia airport. Around noon, they touched down in Costa Rica and spent the entire week helping Hope Ministries.

The seniors spent time playing with children in orphanages and in poor villages, evangelizing in the streets, and distributing bags of food to people that live in poverty.

The trip gave students a taste of the ministry and what it looks like to take the gospel to the ends of the earth. The last few days the students got to enjoy a beach resort and flew back to the US on February 18.

The anticipated March 1 finally arrived.

Spring sports athletes began practicing and training for the upcoming season. Girls and boys lacrosse, girls soccer, baseball, and softball all began practices that afternoon.

Red Lion and Tall Oaks upper school students met on the morning of March 6 for an internet security assembly.

Mr. Jeff Silver taught the students the importantance of being safe on the internet.

He disccused how to choose the right password, social media, and how dangerous and common hackers are. The assembly was informative and showed the students the dangers of the internet and how to stay safe.

Under the guidance of Spanish teacher Mrs. Laureen Davison, the Tall Oaks juniors and seniors organized the Coffee House as a fundraiser for the junior and senior trip to Mexico. It was a fun-filled evening featuring a variety of delicious desserts as well as many performances by students of all ages.

On March 16, the Spring Musical opened its curtains to present the Wizard of Oz. This was the first musical that featured both Tall Oaks and Red Lion students. The play brought large audiences through its funfilled dialogue and whimsical scenes. The play starred Mollie Betters as Dorothy, Sam McGarvey as the Scarecrow, Aidan Briggs as the Tin Man, and Bria Dickerson as the Cowardly Lion.

The students of Glasgow Family of Schools invited their pastors to a special event held in the Red Lion Campus sanctuary. The day began at 8:30 a.m. along with a meet and greet with Dr. Tim Dernlan. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., the pastors visited students across the campus in their different classrooms. The breakfast was held in honor of everything the pastors do in our communities to spread the gospel.

Spring wasn’t exactly in the air with the temperatures in the 50’s but that didn’t stop the students from enjoying the juniorsenior prom. After several years at the Newark Country Club, the prom was held at the Chesapeake Inn in Chesapeake City, MD. The theme was A Night With Oscar.

The students selected Isabella Rupert and Zach Barbin as prom queen and king.

Move it or lose it As if having a job at Red Lion and being a loving mother to her family five is not enough, Mrs. Nona Carey makes time to keep her body moving and healthy, giving a new meaning to “woman of strength.”

The words “average woman” do not come close to describing Mrs. Nona Carey. Although students may only see her cleaning tables and floors in Red Lion’s cafeteria, she does much more than that. A strong woman physically and spiritually, she might inspire more people than she thinks.

In high school, Mrs. Carey, like many other teenagers, participated in volleyball, basketball, softball, and cheerleading. Her favorite of the four sports was volleyball, which she continued to play through college. As an avid sports enthusiast, she is a self-proclaimed diehard Steelers fan, and she loves to watch college football as well. Her love for sports and keeping in shape has not gone away, as she still enjoys exercising. Unlike most people, not only does she actually love to workout, she also does what most women would not, weightlifting. She says that she loves feeling strong, and her “hobby” keeps her feeling this way.

One of the reasons she decided to start and stay with exercising, particularly weightlifting, is because she was raised on a farm.

She grew up with three brothers, and keeping up with them was a must.

Mrs. Carey has also had some surgeries and lived to tell the tale. She had brain surgery in 2005 to have an aneurysm clipped. Then, in 2009, she had both of her jaw joints replaced. “I sometimes refer to myself as the ‘Bionic Woman because I claim to be able to out-talk and or out-eat anyone, due to my titanium jaw joints. It would be my super power if I actually had one.”

Everyone grows old. It is a fact of life, but Mrs. Carey does not let that fact control her life. “I don’t mind getting older, I just don’t want to get ‘old’. To me, getting ‘old’ is a state of mind - not body.” Her philosophy for life is “move it or lose it,” which means never staying down, getting up, moving, and in this case, exercising.

With all of her physical strength, she does not claim that it is her own glory. She still has given credit to where credit is due. Mrs. Carey knows that she cannot do this alone, and what really gives her strength is the Lord. “I know that God is my strength, and I am thankful for each day that He gives me to live. For I can do absolutely nothing without Him. God has blessed me with an awesome life, and I am so grateful.” She gives all glory to God, the giver of all strength.

Not only does Mrs. Carey love to stay active and in shape, but it also runs in the family. Her daughter, Susanna Carey, is also very active and actually lifts weights competitively. Susanna is now in college but says that her mom and dad always helped to get her to soccer practices and martial arts classes when she was younger. She lifts competitively and says that her mom is always very supportive. “My first Strongman competition I had was up in New York, and my mom drove all the way up to check it out and cheer me on, which was a blast!” If Mrs. Carey cannot make it to a competition, she always shoots a text her daughter’s way wishing her luck.

Along with her daughter, Mrs. Carey has four other children, one being a son-in-law who she claims as one of her own.

She said “I am married to the most amazing man in the world; He’d have to be, to stick with me for thirty one years and counting.” She has homeschooled all of her children except one. Nick, a junior, has been going to Tall Oaks since seventh grade, and she is very thankful to be able to send him there.

Mrs. Carey is thankful for her job at Red Lion, and she enjoys working here. She loves getting to know her fellow faculty and the students, and she thanks them for being so welcoming and kind when she started working here. She thanks God for all of the students, and she will continue to pray for them. She asks that they pray for her as well.

“We’re developing community service and fellowship...”

HISTORY OF THE HOUSE “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’” These are the words of Abraham Kuyper, a Dutch politician and theologian for whom the House of Kuyper is named. The House of Kuyper was founded as part of the Tall Oaks House System in 2013, with then-House Chair Jaime Weber leading Kuyper to a narrow championship victory over the House of Kepler to become the inaugural Headmaster’s Cup champions. During the school year, Weber told her fellow house members, “Abraham Kuyper firmly believed that Christ’s lordship extends to every area of human life and that all of life should be affected by the redemption of Jesus Christ. As members of the House of Kuyper, we can embody this quote in our thinking, in our interaction with others, and in our daily lives, as we consider how to reflect God’s grace and glorify Him in all we do.”

Weber, is currently serving as Kuyper’s House Chair and aiming to do just that. “We’re developing community service and fellowship,” he said in an article for The News Journal earlier this year. “And we have fun together; I’m like the father in Cheaper by the Dozen. It’s crazy fun in the end.”

The House of Kuyper is indeed developing both community service and fellowship. In October, the House completed a service project on the Red Lion campus, spreading a much-needed new batch of mulch around the elementary school playground.

Kuyper also recently introduced a buddy system, pairing older house members with younger house members in an effort to promote relationshipbuilding between older and younger students. “I set up the buddy system to encourage friendships in our house,” House Captain Victoria Taylor explained. “This allows those friendships to be encouraged, and we all get to know each other on a deeper level.”

Service project On October 22, 2016, the House of Kuyper completed a service project on the Red Lion campus. The students and their parents took a few hours out of their weekend plans to cover the elementary school playground with a much-needed new batch of mulch. Some students used wheelbarrows to dump the mulch around the playground, while others used rakes to spread it over tree roots and other hazards. Many hands were able to make light work when the House worked together as a team, and the students enjoyed lunch together afterwards.

“The playground desperately needed a new batch of mulch, so even though it was cold and rainy, it was a blessing to be able to serve the community in this way,” said Benjamin Schneider, pictured with Faith Taylor and Mr. Bryan Deitrich.

DRAMA LADIES Three girls with a passion for the Dramatic Arts are excelling in the theater department.

DANIELLE, A YOUTHFUL LOOK AT DRAMA Do you ever wonder what it is like to act in front of a massive live audience with a wide variety of cast members? Danielle Swirczynski, a seventh grade student at Glasgow Christian Academy, is one of those students who enjoys going out on stage as part of the GCA youth drama program. The program is made up of 3rd - 7th grade students. Eighth grade students have the option to perform in either youth or the high school programs.

Danielle has been acting for over three years, working in multiple productions. GCA youth drama director, Jennifer Hawkins, said, “Danielle is one of those students that is directable and willing to take on any role. Her portrayal of Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast was strong and she felt free to put her own spin on the character. That’s a sign of a good actor.” She has performed in The Wizard of Oz, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. Danielle said, “I became interested in acting when I saw other plays and saw how much fun they were having. I wanted to join them.” She prefers to perform in mediumsized roles saying, “They don’t have too many lines, but they still have a decent amount of stage time.”

On average she practices three hours each week at home, not including the time spent at actual practices which run about two hours. Danielle is interested in having a career in acting if she does not take a job that is related to animals. She advised anyone who thinks acting looks awesome to join in.

“Don’t worry about being nervous. Enjoy it while you can.” she replied.

Danielle recently participated in the highly anticipated GCA production of Madagascar, A Musical Adventure. In the play, she is the lioness, Candy Hammernose, and a dream dancer. Danielle said “I hope to continue with acting. I love every minute of it”.

MADI AND MADIE, A HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA VETERAN AND A NEWBIE.

THE VETERAN Madie Hawkins is another GCA drama student that adores acting on stage. Madie Hawkins has participated in various GCA Dramatic Productions since 2011 with small and large roles in Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and even played a man in Fiddler on the Roof. She says, “Anyone who is thinking about trying out for drama should go for it.

Everyone should try it at least once.”

Madie originally joined drama because it seemed like fun. “In addition to acting like someone else, you make a lot of friends and create some awesome memories.”

Her first play was Peter Pan, which she loved. She advised, “At first try doing a smaller role. If you love it go for bigger roles.” She continued saying, “Acting helps tremendously in building up your courage.”

Her favorite play thus far was Fiddler on the Roof where she played the Constable.

This year she will be in Annie, playing the ultimate villain to all orphans, Ms. Hannigan.

Madi Pritt joined the drama scene last year when she was a junior. She said, “Having never performed on stage before, I wasn’t sure what to expect.” Once she had a taste of theater life, she never looked back.

Madi entered an acting contest with fellow cast mate, Clayton Rash. They did a scene from My Fair Lady, in which she had to use an English accent. She wasn’t deterred by the challenge.

To anyone interested in theater, she also said “Go for it!” She went on to say, “Even if you aren’t sure you’re able do it, you’ll have fun. The drama staff are a great encouragement, and Director Mr. Hausheer is amazing.” Her favorite play (and incidentally, her first play) by far was Fiddler on the Roof. She too will star in Annie as Lily St. Regis, a role she is having a blast preparing for. The girls invite everyone to see a performance of Annie, May 4-6 at 7:00pm. Tickets are available at the door and in the GCA office on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

needs children. I was really excited to have this opportunity because this is what I want to spend the rest of my life doing,” Diana Mihalko explained.

Red Lion’s National Honor Society helped with the event as well. They were in charge of making cards and writing encouraging notes that would go into the gift bags given to the guests. Some of the members volunteered to be a buddy as well. “My friends and I wanted to help out with the event. Later on in the week we found out that we needed a NHS project so we also ended up using Night to Shine for our NHS hours,” Emily Skelton explained.

“It was cool to see how comfortable they were when they saw you and how loving they were,” Anastasia Markakis expressed. “I had to realize that the night was not about me and if I were having fun, but about my guest and making sure he was having a good time,” Emily Skelton said.

“Night to Shine is my favorite night of the year, and it was incredible to be able to hold this worldwide event in the state of Delaware for the very first time. What a joy to serve with such dedicated and caring volunteers from our schools and church campuses to see this vision become a reality. I am excited to work together again and reach our community with ‘Nothing but Jesus’.

I’m looking forward to Night to Shine 2018.” Sandra Gasorek said.

This event was an opportunity for the people involved and the guests that attended the prom. It was an opportunity to serve others and share the love of Christ. The night was not just about the volunteers but the amazing human beings that God created.

Luke 14:13-14 says, “When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

lasgow Church teamed up with the Tim Tebow Foundation to pull off one of the biggest nights in Delaware. Night to Shine was an idea created by Tim Tebow to have a prom for people who have special needs.

At this prom all the guests walk the red carpet and are crowned King or Queen. To pull off such a big night, Sandra Gasorek, the Connections & Outreach Director of Glasgow Church, needed huge help from students who attend GFS and as well as people from the Delaware community.

A couple weeks before the event, the volunteers who signed up to be a buddy came to an informative meeting, led by Sandra, that explained to them what their duties as a buddy were. “They took you through all of the things you needed to know, and we learned about the conditions and the process that you have to go through that night.” Abbey Tokarski said. “I was still nervous after the meeting,” she explained.

There were a lot of jobs that needed to be done to pull off such an event. There were jobs for set-up and clean-up, karaoke, buddies, check-in, corsages/boutonnieres, photography, games, makeup, shoe shine, and the photobooth. When the word got out, many people around the local area volunteered to help.

There were people like Angel Helton and Stephanie Long who helped behind the scenes to get everything set up. They helped decorate the rooms, hand out corsages and boutonnieres, as well as packing the gift bags for the guests. “It was really fun. The girls were really excited to get the corsages and putting them on,” Stephanie said. “It was so cute!”

When presented with the opportunity to be a buddy and be hands-on with the guests, students were excited to volunteer. “I plan on majoring in special needs education. I love being around special

RUBY & ROHIT It was a fun night for Ruby Mercer and her buddy Rohit Kanthamneni. Unfortunatley Ruby was too sick to actually go to the main meetings that were offered. But lucky enough, there was a makeup meeting because Night to Shine needed more buddies to help that night. “I was really excited to go” she said. “The video that they showed us got me really excited to work with the kids.”

Ruby signed up to be a buddy for Night to Shine which is a is a huge responsibility. The buddies are in charge of being with the guest for the prom and making sure they have the best night of their lives whether it is dancing or playing games.

She has had past experience with special needs children with the Blue Gold Club.

Before arriving for the big night, Ruby was sent information about her guest. The information explained who the prom guest was and what they like to do along with other things. “I was nervous because I was not sure how he was going to be like in person. I just had to be there to really get comfotable.”

Ruby and her buddy Rohit did everything that night. They ate, danced, played games, and danced some more. Rohit even got his hair done in the Glam Room. “It was really fun!

The best part of the night was dancing,” she said. “It was also fun meeting my friend’s buddies. Hanging out with them as a group was cool.”

“This experience gave me a better perspective on life. It is easy for us to think that our life is so rough and is too big for God to handle. But when you see these kids and adults with disabilities, they have nothing but smiles on their faces all the time and are really happy. It’s very inspiring. This was an inspirational night that could not be forgotten.”

firefighter by night

Finding a passion in life can be hard, but Tall Oaks senior Alex Hinckley has known his since he was a little boy. Now he lives out his dreams everyday.

Many children dream of one day growing up and becoming a firefighter; however, most of them do not get to live out this dream. Alex Hinckley was one of those kids who was inspired by the brave men and women who risk their lives every day to save others in need. When he was four years old, Alex attended an event at the Riverfront put on by the Wilmington Fire Department, where he saw fire engines, and interacted with firefighters.

He discovered that he wanted to be just like them, saving lives and inspiring other children.

For many years this dream was pushed to the back of his mind. He was too young, he did not have the time, and most of all, he did not know how to get involved. This all changed two years ago when he was working at a local Acme. One of his coworkers was a member at the Mill Creek Fire Department. He told Alex all about becoming a firefighter and the work that they do. Alex knew at that point that he wanted to make his dream a reality.

Alex has been a volunteer firefighter at Mill Creek Fire Department for two years. His favorite parts of the job are answering to vehicle rescue calls and getting to go into the fires to help the people inside get out safely.

On September 24, 2016, there was a fire in the city of Wilmington. When units were sent inside

the home, the floor collapsed and they started to call Mayday, which means firefighter down. They sent in another crew to save the people that went down, and that is when they started to call for Alex’s unit. “It was 2:30 a.m. when we got dispatched,” Alex said, “and I was sleeping at the firehouse that night. We all hopped out of bed and we were running to the trucks. There was that mixed emotion, like ‘oh we get to go fight a fire,’ but there are three Maydays on the first floor.” When Alex and his unit got on scene, they grabbed whatever

tools they needed and went around to the back to find a chief to brief them.

The plan was to go in through the back and make their way to the front. “We all kneeled down to put our masks on and that’s when your stomach goes right into your chest because it’s about to get real.”

Alex said when he went in it was weird because the second floor was now on the first floor because of the collapse. Inside of the house they met up with a

lieutenant from the city. He was standing in front of a refrigerator that had fallen down, and there was a two foot gap that they could go through to get to the other side. Alex’s lieutenant and another firefighter went through the gap, and then it was his turn. “I was on my way through the gap when he pushed me back and said wait here. This whole time I could hear screaming, but I had no idea what it was, it just did not click. A couple seconds later I see this head appear, and I wondered what was going on. That’s when he pushed her face first over this obstacle and on to the floor. So the lieutenant from the city and I grabbed onto her.

The other two jumped over the fridge and picked up her legs and we drug her out of the house.” Alex said she was conscious the whole time and then as soon and they got out of the house she lost consciousness and they started CPR. She passed away a month and a half later due to the fire, but it would have been a lot sooner if Alex and his crew had not come to the rescue.

Alex said that when the siren goes off and you know there is a fire, it’s the best feeling in the world.

“We get to go do what we love, go screaming down the road and fight fires. It’s excitement, but also we’re about to go into this burning building.”

Alex plans on going into the Marines, but once he is out, he wants to continue to be a firefighter for the rest of his life to continue doing what he loves.

Mrs. Erin Jackson has been a valuable teacher and committee member at Glasgow Christian Academy for over five years. Her work for the committee, while difficult for some, is something she takes great joy in doing. She handles the finances and bookkeeping in addition to teaching and serving as a GCA committee member.

As a teacher, she deals with even more math by teaching subjects such as pre-algebra, civics, economics, and consumer math. When asked about her favorite part of her job, she said, “It’s definitely helping people; helping them learn, helping them homeschool, just helping them to be the best they can be.”

She came to GCA in 2010 by working part-time helping with the bookkeeping. At this point she hadn't started homeschooling. After meeting people and becoming a part of the community, she realized how much she loved homeschooling and started teaching her own kids a year later. Eventually, the committee member that managed most of the finances at the time left, so Mrs. Jackson stepped in and took her place.

She’s been working and teaching at GCA ever since.

GCA, while still being a place of learning, is also a very close-knit community, Mrs. Jackson agreed, “GCA has an amazing atmosphere. It’s like we’re all one big family here.” She feels very strongly about GCA and home school education in general believing that, “The goal in a school is for students to learn, but also to be able to learn from anyone at any time.” She believes that a teacher’s job is never done and should help students prepare for college and real life outside of school. Mrs. Jackson has had a lot of experience in teaching, from homeschooling her own children to working in a classroom at GCA. Mrs. Jackson has been a Christian for many years, but even somebody who has been going to church all their lives doesn't know everything about the gospel, and neither does she. She said, “I constantly learn new things about my faith and from God through my teaching every day.” She said working at GCA allows her to gain insight she otherwise wouldn't have. “Now when I teach others, I don’t only learn new things academically, but spiritually.”

E

veryone dreams of the day they get on TV, but Nathan and Jack Hardcastle had no clue it would happen to them at age eleven and twelve. Both boys have a passion for baseball and have played Little League since before they can even remember. By age eleven, Nate was picked for his Little League’s all-star team.

Every Little League team has an all-star team. An all-star team is a team made up of some of the best players from the regular Little League season. Nate played for the Newark National Little League. The first year he played, the team made it to Regionals and was one win away from going to the Little League World Series. They had to win their district games, then win Sectionals, then states, then Regionals, and then they go Williamsport, Pennsylvania to compete with teams from all over the world. At age eleven, Nate was so close to getting to play for the World Series, which only encouraged him to get there the next year.

This is exactly what he did with his brother, Jack.

Jack turned eleven and was able to play on the Newark National team with his brother Nate who was now twelve. The duo became unstoppable and well known throughout the competition as the Hardcastle brothers. Nate went between playing pitcher and shortstop, while Jack was the catcher. They led their team through regionals with wins against teams like Washington, D.C. beating them 8-4. They also defeated the New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania teams.

They won the Mid-Atlantic regionals and would now continue to Williamsport as the Mid-Atlantic team in the Little League World Series.

Their first official game in the Little League World

Series took place on August 16 against the Mid-West team from Urbandale, Iowa.

With 1 RBI, 4 first pitch strikes, and 4 strikeouts, Nate led the team to a 6-3 victory.

Sadly, this was the end of the team’s good luck. On August 18, the Newark Nationals lost 3-15 to the Western team from Chula Vista, California. The next day, August 19, would be Jack and Nate’s last day in Williamsport. The once unstoppable Mid-Atlantic team lost in a shut out to the South Eastern team from Nashville, Tennessee.

This didn’t discourage the Hardcastles at all. In fact, they ended up ranked 6th overall for the U.S. Making it to the series was enough of a success for them to begin with but to be ranked 6th in the country was also an amazing accomplishment that they will always have.

“The World Series was a cool experience overall,” Jack said. “When we were there, were a lot of little kids who would ask for pictures and autographs and that was really awesome to experience.” The further players get in the Little League World Series, the more well known they become. Many little boys come to watch and aspire to be the players who make good plays. It was very common for the boys to look up to players like the Hardcastles. Many people watching from home on their TV’s also began to remember the names, Nathan and Jack Hardcastle. Nate said, “Some people recognize me from it; mostly after it had just happened. No one really recognizes me anymore though. Last time I went back to visit the field, a couple people asked to take pictures with me.” When the boys came back home, they began to be called out by name in public places almost like celebrities.

As short lived as their fame was, most twelve year olds can’t say that they once had people asking for pictures most places they went.

from Missionary to Teacher

While serving on a missions trip to Mexico, Mrs. Laureen Davison quickly picked up the Spanish language. Upon returning to the United States, she joined the Tall Oaks staff as the school secretary and began teaching Spanish shortly thereafter.

veteran staff member at Tall Oaks Classical School, Mrs. Laureen Davison has been at Tall Oaks since 2006. She began as the school’s secretary and has also served as a sixth grade teacher; however, Mrs. Davison is best known as Tall Oaks’ upper school Spanish teacher. She began teaching Spanish in the winter of 2007 and continues to hold that position to this day.

Mrs. Davison grew up in southeastern Pennsylvania, living in Montgomery and Bucks Counties. Spanish, however, was not her language of study in high school. Mrs. Davison took “twoplus years” of German at Quakertown High School before attending Philadelphia College of Bible, known today as Cairn University.

While in college, Mrs. Davison took part in a summer mission immersion program (formerly Spearhead, now Avance) after completing her sophomore year. “The church I attended had a program whereby you did short-term missions. I wanted to go to Austria or Germany because that coincided with my German, but they didn’t have any openings at the time…They had an opening in Mexico, and you didn’t have to speak the language; part of the eight-week commitment was going to language school for the first four weeks, so I decided to be part of that.”

Mrs. Davison was able to pick up the language relatively quickly, crediting limited exposure to Spanish in grade school but also the family she stayed with while in Mexico. “Every dinner consisted of learning something. Someone would ask how to say something, and from there you would learn all the words that pertained to it.” While on the trip, she helped a local church and her missions team in several areas, which included leading a summer neighborhood Bible school. “Since I had been a teacher in the States, I could help run the Bible school even though I didn’t fully know the language - quite a bit of a stretch!”

The program was only supposed to last eight weeks, but there were options allowing her to stay in Mexico for up to six months. Mrs. Davison chose to stay beyond the original planned schedule and was able to improve her Spanish fluency even more by taking five rigorous Spanish courses (grammar, conversation, pronunciation, composition, and literature).

“The literature course consisted of reading Spanish classics, with the language of Shakespearean times,” she recalled, adding that despite the fact that although at that time it was a

stretch, she would now entertain the opportunity to take the course again.

After the six months, Mrs. Davison returned to the U.S. to finish her college education. After doing some temporary work, she returned to Mexico for two years. This time, it was a bit different; her Spanish skills had increased, which allowed her the opportunity to work with the same local church but now in a more active part with the youth group and Bible studies. Later her work revolved around the Spearhead program and helping with the details that needed to be in place for the new group of new summer workers. When she chose to return to the States, she had hopes of finding a job where she could utilize her Spanish experience. Eventually, she interviewed for the role of Spanish teacher at a Christian school in Philadelphia and taught there for six years.

After getting married, Mrs. Davison moved to the Poconos.

During that time, she had the opportunity to become a translator for migrant workers at doctors’ offices, hospitals, and immigration offices. From the Poconos, she and her husband moved to New Jersey, where they homeschooled their two sons before relocating ten years later. “The Lord brought us to Maryland, and my husband took a job at Sandy Cove Bible Conference,” she said. Meanwhile, her sons, Raymond and Brian, were homeschooled in conjunction with Towle Institute.

Deciding their sons needed something different, the Davisons committed to joining the Tall Oaks family. “My husband and I decided that we needed to enroll our sons at TOCS but were very concerned about the details of how we would pay for their schooling,” she said. “After we took the next steps of going through the application process, we learned that the school was looking for someone to assume the position of the front desk. Although my secretarial skills were a bit rusty, they were salvageable.” The job allowed the Davison family to join Tall Oaks in 2006, and Mrs. Davison assumed the position of Spanish teacher that following winter.

In the fall of 2007, along with teaching Spanish, she began teaching various sixth grade classes, a role from which she retired in 2011.

More recently, Mrs. Davison received her Master’s Degree in Foreign Language Teaching from Michigan State University. In April, she will be returning to Mexico, chaperoning the junior and senior classes on their own mission trip to what she calls “a country which I have learned to love.”

our years ago, Julie Papili decided to take worship to the next level and start up the GCA band. After teaching Kendall Kerr guitar for a while, she encouraged her to join. “That was the first band I ever played in,” explained Kendall who is now the leader at the age of sixteen.

Julie recommended to the GCA committee that Kendall should take over the band. At such a young age, Kendall doesn’t just play guitar for the group but also keeps the band organized and prepared. She conducts practices every Tuesday and chooses the songs that are performed. She said, “It’s really fun being able to sort of play around with a song, and make it our own.”

Although there are members of the band who are more experienced, Kendall doesn’t discriminate against amateurs. She confidently stated, “I want the GCA band to be a place for musicians of all levels to improve. This is the band I started with and if it wasn’t for the band, I know I wouldn’t be where I am today

musically speaking. So I want to give everyone else the same chance to use this band to better their skills.”

Nehemiah Wilson, who is another essential part of the band, said, “I’ve been playing guitar for about six or seven years.” Along with fellow guitarists Kendall Kerr and brothers, Dylan and Tyler Morgan, they all said that being able to play music together requires a lot of teamwork and time out of their personal lives.

It turns out that a surprising number of the musicians in the band also play a lot of sports. When asked what hobbies she had outside of the band, Sophia Spotts, a trumpeter, said, “I play some sports at Red Lion, mainly field hockey.”

There is a lot of diversity in the group. There are kids from just about all levels of experience all playing together. There are vocalists such as Reagan Jones, Madie Hawkins, Sakal Wilson, Emily Robinson, Cecily Falla, and Cassidy Winstead. In addition to male vocalists Dylan Morgan and Nehemiah Wilson, all enjoy the rotating schedule and the ability to blend their voices a little differently each week.

The Glasgow Christian Academy worship band uses their musical talents to show their love for God as they lead students in worship.

The band members all agree it was God who helped them the most. Bass players Tyler Morgan, Justin Giffing and Xander Emberger all enjoy the worship aspect of the band. They also said the music has helped them with their faith. Not to be overlooked are the pianist sisters Julia and Leah Hoopman, in addition to siblings, Isaiah Grob and Reagan Jones.

Several of the band members play multiple instruments which allows for a lot of flexibility in the music choices. Seniors, Andrew Springer on bass, Quentin Fleetwood on drums, vocalist Shannon Straughn and Bobby Imperatrice on guitar will definitely be missed next year. Quentin plans to come back as much as possible to contribute to band, drama, and media arts at GCA. The GCA Worship band works hard to help members live in Christ under the watchful eye of sophomore, Kendall Kerr. “Being in change of this band has taught me a lot about leadership that I think will definitely help me in life.” This is proven in the quality of their music and the strength of their commitment.

Zach Barbin

he college application process is difficult for any high school senior. It’s even more difficult when sports are added into the mix. Not only do you have to apply to schools, but you also have to find which school will offer you the most money for the sport you play. Red Lion student Zach Barbin understands how confusing and challenging this process is. Last spring, he sent a total of 50 emails to different colleges asking D1 coaches to look at what he had to offer. Only half got back to him. Liberty was one of the first to respond. They sent an email asking him to come down to Lynchburg and visit the campus.

Zach soon took a road trip to see if this might be the offer he’s been looking for. The coach showed him around the campus and actually spent a total of nine hours talking and getting to know Zach.

“He spent the most time with me and my family compared to all the other college visits I’ve been on.”

At the end of the tour, he sat Zach down in the cafeteria and gave him news he didn’t want to hear.

He said that he was interested, but there is no one on the team who is graduating so he doesn’t need any more players. He said he just didn’t need any

incoming freshman on the team right now. Because no one was leaving the team, he didn’t know if he could even offer Zach any money. Too many other players on the team had scholarships he had to provide money for. He still wanted Zach and wanted to see him commit to the team, but there was nothing he could do to make that happen. Zach left empty-handed.

Summer went by, and there were a total of 12 schools that were interested and looking at him.

Eight of them even came out to watch him play. To Zach’s surprise, Liberty ended up being one of them.

“The coach said he really liked what he saw.” During that time, he had given up on Liberty and was no longer in communication with them. “Liberty was my number one school the whole time, and when they started drifting away and not contacting me anymore, I thought it was over.“ In fact, two other schools had begun to look into what Zach had to offer which grabbed his attention at the time. Leaving him disappointed, one of the schools fell out and no longer wanted to offer Zach anything.

Only a few hours later after finding out the hard news, Liberty called Andy Barbin, Zach’s dad. They asked if he still wanted to go to Liberty. After his

dad responded yes, the coach went on to say that he had worked something out. He said, “The only issue seems to be the first year. I cannot offer him any money like I said before, but after players graduate I can change that. If Zach continues to work hard and play for our team next year, the next three years won’t be an issue financially.” Zach had a hard decision to make. There was another school offering 70% tuition money. It was either go to his top choice and get money later or go to a school he didn’t enjoy but not have to worry about the financial aspect.

On the way to a golf tournament in West Virginia, he talked it over with his dad. They both agreed that the money is worth it to play for Liberty’s team.

Liberty’s golf team is in the top thirty golf teams in the country. “No one is graduating, and I’ll be the only one coming in as a freshman which is such a great opportunity. To be on a team that makes the national championship as a top 25 team is amazing.

The fact that I could possibly play in the national championship is so cool. That’s why I choose Liberty.

It’s such a great school. I love it.” In the middle of October, he made his final decision. “I knew I wanted to go there from the beginning, I just never thought it would work out.”

Tall Oaks junior Lezlie Gray has been dancing since the age of two. “I got started when my mom put me in ballet class for the first time, and I just fell in love with it,” she recalls. “I was hooked from the first moment.”

Now, Lezlie is the soloist at Delaware Dance Company and has appeared in many productions over the years. While she primarily studies ballet, she also trains regularly in modern and jazz.

When Lezlie entered ninth grade, she was invited into her company at the apprentice level. Halfway through the year, she was promoted to a junior. Last year, she was promoted again to a senior, and this year, she was promoted to the soloist of the company. “That was a huge honor to receive. I get to be the role model for the younger students at my dance company, not just in dancing, but in how I act around the dance studio. I’m trying to show Jesus through my life, and I hope I’m doing that. As far as dancing, I get to perform roles that I only dreamed of ever doing,” she says.

Lezlie’s favorite memories from her dance career include when she got her pointe shoes and anytime she has had the chance to perform a pas de deux. “When I got my pointe shoes, I thought I’d made it in the world. You have to train really, really hard that year and do so many strengthening exercises for your feet, ankles, and legs. At the end of the year, you have to take a test to see if you’re ready to go up en pointe. It took me a while, but I finally passed the test and was able to get my first pair of pointe shoes.

I was so excited about it! I would say that my favorite memory now is whenever I get to perform a pas de deux. It’s an amazing feeling. When you are a little kid, you watch dancers perform principal roles and dance with a guy. It’s just so surreal that I get to be that dancer now, to have those moments now that remind me of my little self watching and thinking, ‘I want to do that when I’m older.’”

Lezlie has been dancing in her company’s annual performance of The Nutcracker since the age of nine. “The Nutcracker has probably been my favorite performance. Every year I get to be something new and exciting, even though it’s the same show. The first time I saw The Nutcracker was when I was eight, and I thought, ‘I want to do this!’ So the next year I was a little mouse, and then I worked my way up. I wanted to be Clara. That was my dream role, and I got to do that two years ago. I was the Snow Queen and Dewdrop Fairy this past year.”

Lezlie has been awarded scholarships from a variety of dance festivals, including the Maryland and Delaware Dance Festivals and the Regional Dance America (RDA) Festival. She also received scholarships for the

past two summers to attend the summer dance intensive at Ballet Magnificat!, a Christian dance company based in Jackson, Mississippi. She remembers, “I first heard of Ballet Mag from Kelly Weber, who is an alum of Tall Oaks. Two summers ago, I went for four weeks, and I just fell in love with it. I got to take ballet classes, partnering, and contemporary. You’re doing all of that to worship God, using classical ballet as the basis to praise Him, and I thought that was amazing. I really grew there spiritually. This past year, I was accepted into their pre-professional level program and got to learn and perform a fulllength ballet called The Scarlet Cord. It’s about communist Russia and seeing God’s redemption even through the heartache and oppression during that time. Getting to perform that was really eye-opening to me, and I really felt the Lord with me as I danced that whole ballet and got to show God’s plan of redemption.”

In the future, Lezlie wants to become a professional dancer. She plans to audition for companies that have openings as well as to apply to colleges that offer a dance major so that she can earn a degree to become a dance teacher. “I hope that dance is a part of my life as long as God allows it to be. I plan to see what doors are opened and what doors are closed and go from there.”

Lezlie is currently working on a spring gala performance as well as a performance for the Regional Dance America (RDA) Festival, which will be held in Phoenix, Arizona. She will be performing two contemporary dances, two contemporary ballet pieces, and one classical ballet piece.

“The hardest part of dancing is probably the repetitive rehearsals. You get to a point where you’ve been doing it for so long that you want to move on to something else, but you get to the performance and are so thankful for all of those long rehearsals so that your performance can be as perfect as possible. Sometimes I get discouraged and ask why I’m doing this to myself, putting so many hours into dance and still having all my homework to do, but then I remind myself that this is what I love to do. I love dance, and I wouldn’t be the same person without it.

“I dance because it is my passion. It’s part of what defines me, being able to see myself grow from when I was two until now, the number of opportunities that I’ve had, the teachers encouraging me to grow as much as I can, and seeing all that hard work that I’ve put into it grow me into what I hope is a beautiful dancer. Being a Christian, my goal in every performance is always to show the Lord through my dancing, and I hope that shows through as I perform.”

aving sung for many years in various school choirs and select ensembles, Lauren Phillips most recently has been participating in the Delaware All-State Choir. This is her second year in All-State Choir.

She was a part of the women’s choir last year, and this year she joined the mixed choir. Lauren went through the rigorous audition process, and then after much anticipation, got word that she was selected into the prestigious choir. She enjoys being a part of such a large group of singers who all want to be there and want to sing together. Despite only having one to two practices a month, All-State Choir is a large commitment. If a member misses one practice, they are kicked out because they will not know the music that they need to learn for the concert. Lauren has never missed a practice because of how much she enjoys it. She enjoyed being part of such a large group where she gets the opportunity to befriend other people with similar taste in music and the same drive to succeed.

Besides the social aspects, Lauren also loves learning the songs and pushing herself to her musical limits. She noted how fun it was to sing alongside such a strong, large men’s section. This is something she doesn’t experience in school.

The Red Lion men’s section of the choir is not its strongest right now, but Lauren believes that it is headed in the right direction under Mr. Gioconda’s guidance.

She looks forward to see how he grows not only the choir but also the theatrical arts program.

Her first play at Red Lion was Meet Me in St. Louis, and she has participated in the majority of them since. She loves getting the chance to sing and dance as well as getting to know her peers.

Most recently, Lauren got the great opportunity to sing at the school talent show with her younger sister, Abby. They sang the song Scars to Your Beautiful

by Alesia Cara. This song holds deep meaning to Lauren, and she thinks it is very relevant in today’s society. “Many people want to be like those around them.

They don’t want to embrace what makes them unique. God made everyone special, and this is something we should celebrate not try to change,” Lauren said.

She hopes to continue music in the future. Her goal is to attend Cairn University after graduating from Red Lion and would like one day to be a music teacher conducting her own choir.

Using the gifts God gave her, freshman Lydia Glover strives to glorify God and point the world towards Him through her talent of singing, dancing, and acting.

ydia Glover has been a student at Red Lion Christian Academy for seven years now. She has always loved music and being involved in choirs just like her sister, Claudia. A junior, Claudia was in the school choir during her middle school years and has continued throughout her high school years.

Inspired by her older sister, Lydia eagerly anticipated the day she was able to join the Red Lion choir in sixth grade.

Along with being apart of two choirs at Red Lion, Lydia is a part of two choirs at the University of Delaware. Currently she sings in the Red Lion school choir and the Select Ensemble. At the University of Delaware, she sings in the Gold Choir, which is made up of 4th-9th grade students. The other choir at UD is The Singing Hens, which is made up of a select group of members of the Gold Choir.

Lydia got involved in choir because her sister sang in it during middle school.

So when she got into middle school she thought she should do it too. It is a big commitment to do all four choirs because on Tuesdays she has UD choir practice and also has school choir every day. She also has to keep up on her studies and balance all of her school work.

Lydia wants to continue music out of school and even go to college for music.

Her favorite part of music is how she clicks with the other people who enjoy what she does. She makes many new friends through music because they think alike and have the same taste. She loves making new friends and making new memories.

Besides singing, Lydia plays the piano, flute, and ukulele. She plays the flute in the school band and plays the ukulele on her free time. Lydia plans to continue music and theater in the future. She wants to audition for community theater in the future.

She also plans doing a lot more in the future so she can get more experience.

Lydia has already been looking at colleges that have good music programs and she hopes to be visiting them soon. She has acted in the Red Lion plays since she was in sixth grade. She was in the ensemble for Meet Me in St. Louis. Lydia also got a starring role as Flounder in The Little Mermaid. In Guys and Dolls, she was in the ensemble. This year she was in the ensemble for the Wizard of Oz. As well as Red Lion theater, Lydia also does community theater. For community theater she has been in several plays such as Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and many other plays. She has performed at the Everett Theater. She got involved in community theater when she realized that music is what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. She thought she needed to get more experience to strengthen her music and acting career. Lydia wants to strengthen her musical talents, so she can glorify God through all that she does.

Glasgow family of schools

After a year of planning, fund raising, and praying, on February 10 the senior class traveled to the Central American country of Costa Rica for their mission trip.

The seniors, along with their chaperones, landed in the capital city of San Jose and spent most of their time there, ministering on the streets and in schools and orphanages. They also traveled to a small, poor village of Alajuelita where the seniors were able to help minister and to show the love of Jesus to the children.

This is the fourth year that Red Lion has taken a group to Costa Rica.

Through the efforts of Red Lion Spanish teacher Mrs. Letty Rupert, Red Lion has been able to minister to the same community for four years.

Their contact, Pastor Efrain, shared with Mrs. Rupert that Red Lion has been the only group that has traveled back to his community to help support his work. He works with teenage pregnancy, teen drug use, and lack of education in his community.
