EL MALEANTE Panamanian Reggaeton Recording Artist
P
Reggaeton recording artiste Rogelio Gorin, aka El Maleante, is poised for success with the release of his debut album “Como Antes”. The 8-track project is a musical affirmation of Reggaeton’s infectious qualities and romantic moods. Regarded as a giant in Reggaeton, Maleante, the singer-songwriter is taking his music beyond the shores of Panama by including Reggae-centric sounds and deep Spanish grooves that appeal to wider audiences. The first single from the anama-based
4
album, “Como Antes,” was a mainstream offer ing with undertones of El’s former classic song “Quiero Bailar” which launched the artist to popularity. Combining a broad spectrum of micro-genres and styles that blend traditional Latin rhythms with modern influences, and the consistent incorporation of the ‘90s sound (dembow rhythms of reggae and dancehall) with a touch of modern riffs puts “Como Ante” in the crosshairs for international appeal. Fans will appreciate the artists’ versatility. While sharing how he got his name El Maleante,
RED INK MAGAZINE
stated that it was given while collaborating in the recording studio on the album "Muevelo" with "El General". El General is a credited with being the father of Spanish Reggae and is Maleante’s main source of musical influence. Maleante shares that he also drew on inspiration from artist like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Shabba Ranks. The three inspirations can be heard on tracks “Como Ante,” in which the artist reminds Reggaeton fans of when it began in the 90’s and made people dance. “Hace un Año,” was a real life story when Maleante’s relationship was in tur moil and the artist had to make changes in his
lifestyle to get it back together. “Donde Estabas tu” is a song that talks about how folks can only love you when you are famous but dislikes you when you are down. In other words, if you don't love me when I'm dirty then don't love me when I'm clean. Under the management team of G'WAD Entertainment, El Maleante draws on common themes of love, overcoming life obstacles and fending off negative energy to reassure listeners that there are brighter days ahead. “Como Ante” is distributed by VPAL Music, a division of VP Records. www.vprecords.com 5

MICHAEL RAY American Country Music Hitmaker from Florida

M
ichael Ray grew up in a family compound off a dirt road in the small town of Eustis, Florida, just a few miles from a tiny old country church where Sunday service would be held, where communion often carried over to tall tales of his grandparents’ days running moonshine up the East Coast. “Back in the day, my family was part of building this little church off a dirt road. It’s the church my grandfather grew up in, my dad grew up in and then pastored, we grew up in it, and now, my sisters are working to rejuvenate it,” shares Ray. “‘Holy Water’ takes me right back to being a boy in that church, sitting in a wooden pew listening to some of the greatest truths I hold onto to this day.” Featuring swampy percussion and finger picking, the hitmaker readies “Holy Water” for Country radio, going for adds Monday, March 7, following his fourth No. 1 and first multi-week chart topper “Whiskey And Rain,” from his seven-song collection Higher Education. Written by Ashley Gorley, Hunter Phelps, Ben Johnson and Michael Hardy, “Holy Water” is an engrossing story song that follows a Florida preacher and his lucrative midnight side hustle, while the first lines alone offer a prime example of Ray’s ability to sing mouthfuls of detail with the smooth, unhurried delivery of a veteran storyteller: Somewhere inside them back Florida pines there’s a town with a Choctaw name There’s a little white church in a real tight curve on the edge of a field full of grain Yeah, the preacher was a stand-up man shaking hands every Sunday morning at the door He loved his congregation, but he ran an operation selling more than the word of the Lord “I love it when you can hear a song, close your eyes and see exactly what they’re saying,” Ray explains. “I am just naturally drawn to those songs.” On Higher Education, “Ray found a refuge in the mere act of making music that tells his imperfect story, a
story that so many people in this world can certainly relate to during these crazy days,” PEOPLE observes, while American Songwriter emphasizes “Higher Education is shaped by the muse of the man Ray hopes to be, and the lessons he’s learned along the way… inviting his listeners into his world, pulling back the curtain on who he is off the stage.” The Florida-native has garnered over 1 billion global streams, over 650,000 album equivalents and over 100 million YouTube views. Along with his four No. 1 singles, Ray has a total of six RIAA certifications: Platinum-certified “Think A Little Less,” and Gold-certified songs “Whiskey And Rain,” “Her World or Mine,” “One That Got Away,” “Get To You” and “Kiss You
in the Morning.”

RED INK Magazine had the pleasure of asking Michael Ray a few questions. This is what he told us. REDINK: Who or what influenced you to get into music? MR: My family had a band that I was essentially born into, so really, I was born with a love of country music. My parents got divorced when I was 8, and that seemed to be when I started really gravitating towards becoming an artist. My grandpa and my dad showed me guitar chords, and that was my first realization that music is a saving grace. I believe music helped lead me to a better path than what could have been. REDINK: Tell us some pros and cons you've encountered in the music business. MR: A pro would be that you get to be a part of something bigger than yourself. You get to be a part of someone’s life, and you might not even get to meet them. There’s a lot of great things that come with being an artist, but that’s also met with a lot of personal battles: insecurities, self-doubt and placing your self-worth on things that can be detrimental to a person. Continued...from page 9 (Miichae Ray) REDINK: Are you working on anything new at the moment? MR:We've been working on a special project with MusicFX to create my very first NFT! It commemorates "Whiskey And Rain" hitting No. 1 recently, and it felt like a great way to include the fans in the celebration. We also just released “Holy Water” as my new single, and now that it’s out there, we’ve been
doing a lot of writing and listening to some songs getting ready to go back into the studio. REDINK: If you could do a collaboration with someone, who would it be? MR: I’d love to work with Gary Allan. He’s always been a big influence of mine. I think the direction we took on Higher Education and the music I gravitated towards has that Bakersfield sound similar to his, and it would be such a blast to work with him. REDINK: Tell your fans something about yourself, they might not know. MR:Poetry is the only reason I passed English. Half the grade was dependent upon poetry and creative writing, and without that, I wouldn’t have passed. Not a proud moment at that time, but I think I actually won a lot of awards in poetry back in middle school and high school. REDINK: What can we expect next from you? MR:An elevation of Higher Education, more of that sound. I’m really growing into myself as an artist, and I’m confident with where I want to go. I think it’s not only improved my writing personally, but it’s made choosing outside cuts easier too. People really know who I am now and what resonates with me, so the songs they’re pitching align with that. ylvia is a native of New York who comes from a family of creatives and fashion lovers. She has been sewing for over 25 years and is recognized for her contributions to fashion in New York. Her passion for beauty stems from growing up around creative and stylish family members. She was taught to sew by her aunt and learned to make creative patterns out of newspapers. Sylvia’s mom and grandmother were a pair of keen fashion lovers. As a young girl, she attended the Ebony fashion fair show with her siblings, mother, and grandmother. She was fascinated by the commentaries and the positive response of the crowd. Growing up, she created fashion functions for various organizations with the support of her sister.
Sylvia loves to be authentic and vibrant. By finding uniqueness in a highly evolving industry, Sylvia, alongside her sister, Jackie, created their first runway clothing line in 2000. They premiered their first show at the Convention Center in Upstate, NY. This paved the way for her in the fashion realm, as she began collaborating with other creatives,
leading to the birth of the fashion express across multiple cities. This gave designers, hairstylists, and models a platform to showcase their authentic nature. She desired to help models become reverenced for their value and hard work; hence, she began teaching models etiquette.

RED INK MAGAZINE WELCOME TO ICNA-MAC 4TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE, 2003
Continued...from page 23 (Sylvia Robinson) RED INK Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Sylvia Robinson. This is what she said to us. REDINK: Who or what influenced you to get into the fashion industry? SR: I start sewing as a young girl, because I was so tall my mother had a hard time finding the right clothing for my long arms. I hated pants, I learned how to create my own fashion from my auntie. She taught me how to make patterns out of news paper. I was introduced to a whole new world. The community programs had sewing classes which I attended. I didn't want to dress like other people. I turn a negative into a positive, I had my own style and dreamt of showcasing my creative side. REDINK: Tell us some of your struggles and triumphs you had in your journey. SR: I used to do a lot of fund raising for the youths and community organizations and I would do skits with clothing from the stores. One day after a show, I told my sister that the garments were boring, so she brought 2 machines and we went to work. It was a little hard for me because I never wanted to sew for people. I really just wanted to sew for fashion shows and putting on extravagant fashion productions, that’s my passion, I love doing that. I went from city to city, state to state and putting on five star events. I published over a 100 models. I rather sew what's in my mind rather than to have someone send me a picture to copy. I believe in originality in the designs I create. To make garments was never about money. I rather make an over the top garment to see a model do a photo shoot and be published in a magazine. I been doing this for over 30 years I enjoy seeing a collection coming down a Runway on a 5/9 and up with a tuff shoe game. A women is a canvas for me. I'm 60 years old now and when I started doing show back in the days, there were not many black models on the runway to be honest, so I would see young ladies in my community that I know who would make a nice canvas for my design and a master pieces would be born. I love seeing them smile when I dress them in my unique designs. REDINK: Do you have a favorite collection that you are most proud of? If yes, which one? SR: Yes I loved my Steve O Collection this collection was dictated to my late husband, he passed away 2 days after my dream show in 2012. I always wanted to do a fashion show or the roof top of The New York State Museum it was a vision I had in the 90 and back then they were not renting out the venue. But in 2012 I was 24
able to secure the space, it was a long year process but it was definitely worth the wait for it was a Red Carpet Affair. The collection was a mustard yellow and brown I didn't see for almost a year. So I use sewing to pull me out.
REDINK: If you could dress one celebrity who would it be and why? SR: Lady Gaga, I’ve been making garments that celebrities are trying to wear now, the big hats, high collars, puff selves and wide leg pants. Also I'm known to have a very long train on the Runway. REDINK: What next, can we expect from you? SR: I'm going to focus on trying to help build my 3 year old granddaughter to the next level. She is my only grand. She’s been in print since she was 6 months old. She’s done Luv paper box Gap Kids, J Crews, Tiffany & Company Commercial Janie & Jack she also was the Disney princess Tiana. She have grown to love it and when she sees me she would say, MeMa watch me pose and walk. One night she woke me up at 3am asking me to watch her, she started walking and pulling out clothing. I thought that was the cutiest. I love designing and putting on shows, I know my grandaughter will be a top model one day and make me proud. But mostly I’m happy to see her grow and help her in her modeling career. This concludes our interview with Sylvia Robinson. Support this talanted & exceptional Designer. Check her out on facebook.

ello again RED INK foodies! In this issue we hope you enjoy our wonderful recipe selection for the month. We are always happy to share with our readers a fun recipe for you to try. Enjoy!
Instructions:
Step 1 Use a fork to prick the skin of the sweet potato several times. Place the sweet potato on a microwave-safe plate, then microwave on high for 5 minutes. After five minutes, use the fork to pierce the sweet potato in the thickest part. If it's not very soft all the way through, microwave for an additional 1-2 minutes, or until the center is very soft. Step 2 Carefully remove the sweet potato from the microwave (the plate will be hot). Use a towel to grasp the sweet potato as you cut open the skin and scoop out the flesh. Scoop out one packed cup of sweet potato and place it in a medium bowl. Use the fork to mash the sweet potato until smooth. Set it aside to cool further. Step 3 Preheat the oven to 400ºF. In a separate large bowl, combine 2 cups of the all-purpose flour (reserving the last 1/4 cup for later), baking powder, sugar, salt, and nutmeg. Stir until these ingredients are very well combined. Step 4 Use a cheese grater to grate the frozen butter into the bowl with the flour mixture. Take care to guard your fingers and knuckles when you get down to the end of the stick of butter. Stir the grated butter into the flour mixture until they are evenly combined. Step 5 Add the milk to the bowl with the mashed sweet potato. Stir or whisk the sweet potato and milk together until they are well combined. A few small chunks are okay. Step 6 Finally, pour the sweet potato and milk mixture into the bowl of flour and butter. Stir to combine the wet and dry ingredients until one cohesive ball of dough forms. Because sweet potatoes can vary in moisture content, you may need to add extra flour or milk to the dough to get the right consistency. The biscuit dough should be slightly sticky, but not so wet that it is glossy, and no dry flour should remain on the bottom of the bowl. If the dough is too dry (not forming a single ball of dough) add a couple of tablespoons of milk. If it's too wet, dust it liberally with the reserved flour. Step 7 Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface. Press it down into a flat circle, about 1-inch thick. Use a biscuit cutter or a drinking glass to cut biscuits from the dough. Gather up the dough scraps, reshape them into a 1-inch thick circle, and cut more biscuits. Repeat this until no more dough remains. Place the cut biscuits on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Step 8 Bake the biscuits for about 20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top. Serve warm, with butter or maple syrup.
RECIPE:
Sweet Potato Biscuits
Ingredients:• • 1 pound sweet potato • 2.25 cups all-purpose flour, divided • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1 tablespoon sugar • 3/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 8 tablespoon butter, frozen (1 stick) • 1 cup whole milk
