BUNNY WAILER

Reggae Legend and Last Founding Member of The Wailers, Died at 73

B

unny Wailer aka Jah B was born Neville O’Riley Livingston. He grew up in Trench Town and it must have been fate that he would be a legendary reggae icon. His father had a relationship with Bob Marley’s mother and the two of them grew up as brothers. They were being mentored as aspiring musicians by Joe Higgs when they were in their teens and that is where they met Winston Hubert McIntosh, aka, Peter Tosh. The three young men had three things in common, a love of roots reggae music, a love of Jamaica and love for the Rastafari way of life. This trio was truly fated to meet and change the Reggae world forever. Bunny, Bob and Peter created the legendary group The Wailers. The Wailers are to Reggae what the Beatles, KISS and Elvis are for Rock ‘n’Roll. They truly were the trailblazers that brought Reggae Roots Music and the Rastafari way of life into the mainstream, across the globe. At the time that their music was being created, the image of the “Rastafarian” was one of violence and rage against the government in Jamaica. But in reality, that was just one sect of Rastafari and the majority was teaching Peace, brotherhood, love and respect for God and family. To a real Rastafarian, their beliefs are of loving one’s family, helping one’s community, and being close with God and Nature, but above all else it is Peace. The world had this ugly vision of the Rastafari way of life until Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, started touring and showing through their lyrics and by the example of how they lived their own lives that the Rastafari way is not one to be feared, because it was all about being a devout to God, Family and Nature. Weed or Ganja wasn’t being used in a criminal manner, it was being used to reach levels of calmness and commune with God and Nature, it was being used for the healing benefits, that were known to many back in the 50’, 60’s, and 70’s, but are only recently being accepted by science and law. The Wailer’s were not just trailblazers for their art, but for their whole way of life. The early albums Catch a Fire and Burnin’ were released on Island Records label and were the first time that the Rastafari way of life and Roots Reggae Music went so far and made an iconic entry onto the international stage. The albums featured the legendary songs “Hallelujah Time” and “I Shot The Sheriff.” For Bunny Wailer though, life on the road was not what his heart wanted. He left after the Catch a Fire tour and decided to move back to Jamiaca. He later said that he disliked the food and weather outside of Jamaica and felt that his talents were being left to waste with the focus on the tours being Bob Marley’s voice with Tosh and Wailer being turned into back-up vocals. Ultimately Peter Tosh would leave the Wailers as well for the 8

same reasons and the Wailers became the name of Bob Marley’s band throughout the rest of his career. Tosh and Wailer moved on to pursue very successful solo careers. Bunny Wailer resigned himself to staying in Jamaica. He released his debut solo album in 1976 called Blackheart Man. After this he went on to launch several LP’s including Protest and Liberation and several singles including Cool Runnings, Dance Rock and Electric Boogie, the latter became even more popular when Marcia Griffith recorded her version of the song in 1990. Electric Boogie was ultimately eternalized by Ric Silver when he turned it into the “Electric Slide” the most popular wedding, cruise ship and celebration dance song of all time. But many do not realize that we owe that smile inducing party song to the great Bunny Wailer. Bunny Wailer did do some limited on the road tours performing for sold out venues like Madison Square Garden and in 2016 during his final tour, he performed in the Times Square B.B. King Blues Club. He has earned many well deserved awards and nominations throughout this incredible career. He was awarded three Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album. He was given the Order of Merit from the Jamaican Government for his efforts in spreading Jamaican Culture and Music to the world. IRIE FM radio gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award. And the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music gave him a Pinnacle Award. The following quote was from an NPR interview on the award.

RED INK MAGAZINE

"Following UNESCO declaring reggae 'an intangible cultural heritage of humanity,' we were humbled when Bunny Wailer graciously accepted the CPR Pinnacle Award of Excellence on behalf of The Wailers, whom we recognized for their role in the music achieving that inscription," CPR co-founder and president Carlyle McKetty told NPR. It is clear that Bunny Wailer aka Jah B was not just another Reggae star, he was literally the shining light that brought Reggae Roots Music and The Rastafari way of life out of Jamaica and into the World for all to embrace and enjoy. By himself and alongside his brother Bob Marley he inspired countless reggae musicians and set the tone for how reggae music was perceived by the world for the last 60 years. He is not just an icon in the industry; Bunny Wailer is the Bedrock that the industry was built upon. Bunny Wailer you will be missed by countless friends, family and fans, but you will never be forgotten, your lyrics will live on forever on the vinyl and in the airwaves that carry them, and your inspiration will live on through the hundreds of artists that you have motivated to continue the reggae legacy. Rest in peace and carry on in Zion. By Michael Devine u

Since then, he’s doubled down on pursuing music, opting to forego law school to pursue his dream of being an entertainer and performer. Raised in Mount Vernon, NY, The Real Simba uses a lot of his life experiences to paint a picture in the minds of his listeners. “Mount Vernon is a wild place to grow up. There’s a lot of distractions. It was music that allowed him to remain true to himself and grow”. Simba’s music does the same for his listeners, “I aim to make music that lasts forever”. dani bby Non-Fiction Pop Artist On The Rise

ani bby is a rising artist with a current single titled “I Grew Up in LA”) and an upcoming single with singer Willow Smith. She is a musician that is an open book, available to speak on how her previous addictions, struggles, depression and anxiety have led her to where she is now. The upcoming non-fiction pop artist and musician truly wants to entertain her fans in a positive light, wanting her listeners to feel a “little less lonely in this extremely alienating world.” dani bby, (all lowercase) whose name represents the rebirth of her sober self is learning to walk, talk, act and live again as an artist, musician and creative mind. Her current single “I Grew Up in LA” was written after dani bby woke up one morning at 5am and after not being able to sleep, was inspired to pour her emotions into song. What first started as an “angsty” emotional song ended up reflecting a “PCH top-down vibe beat”: a true anthem to the modern California lifestyle. On the song, dani bby worked with Redstar Recording and Tim Sonnefeld, engineer and producer. Tim Sonnefeld is a GRAMMY™ winning producer, engineer, multiInstrumentalist, and arranger who has worked with Usher, Elvis Costello, Rancid, Ben Harper, Rocco Deluca, Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis, and Pomplamoose to name a few. After “I Grew Up in LA”, dani bby hopes to release “Swipe Right” a collaboration with Willow Smith dani bby hopes to be 2021’s breakup anthem. In creating the song, dani bby states: “We did something on this song that really no one has done before and I am so excited to share it with the world.” When not working on her craft, dani bby can be found working in rescuing animals, supporting her own nonprofit, Rebirth Rescue and Animal Sanctuary. RED INK Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing dani bby. This is what she said to us. REDINK: Who or what inspired to become an artist? db: I know it sounds pretty cliche but I had a chaotic childhood. I had this fuzzy Scooby-Doo journal that I started writing in religiously from a very young age and I found that it helped me with my anxiety and depression. 18

“The Chad” Chad Leininger

d

Once I figured out I could turn those entries into songs, it became therapeutic. I was able to express my feelings within the safe space of my music. REDINK: What are some struggles that you have faced in your journey as an artist? db: Oh man, where do I even begin with that question. When I was recording my first pop album at a very young age, I found it very difficult to find the joy in it as I was being molded into what my team thought was marketable. How I should look, act, talk and so forth. There wasn't much room for me to express my identity authentically. Being so young and being in such a grown up atmosphere made it really difficult to figure out who I was and what I wanted, that, alongside with my addiction, is why I left the industry for so long. Now being back I face the same struggles that most women do regardless if they are artists or not. Nonstop harassment, not being taken seriously because of my gender and not getting opportunities because I refuse to play by men's rules.

RED INK MAGAZINE

REDINK: Tell us about your current single and upcoming collaboration with Willow Smith. db: My single that is about to drop is "I Grew up in LA." The song is about the trauma I've endured here (Los Angeles) and illuminates my true self which I almost lost in the process. My producer (Tim Sonnefeld) and I had such an incredible time turning this acoustic song (I wrote at 5 in the morning) into that perfect summer pop track. He caught my emotional poetry with a soft pop beat. I was writing "Swipe Right" and Willow happened to hear the song bleeding out of my headphones and asked to listen to it. To my utter surprise she loved it. Not only is she an incredible vocalist, she's an insanely talented musician. She played bass, guitar, keys and drums on the track. It was a pure trap beat before she jumped on it and from there she added this early 2000s pop-punk vibe that took the song to a completely different level. From there, she helped produce it and coached me vocally to ensure the song was the best it could be. I am eternally grateful for that experience and truly honored. REDINK: If you could collaborate with someone that you haven't before, who would that be and why? db: In my wildest dreams I would get the opportunity to

sit down in the studio with Chris Isaak. I don't have many happy memories from my childhood, but one of them is listening to him in the car with my sisters and feeling like in that moment, everything was going to be okay. REDINK: What can we expect next from you? db: I'm in the studio as we speak finishing up my EP. There is a whole mash up of genres and vibes that represent whatever I am going through at that exact moment. This will be the first full EP I have released since I was a teenager. I'm so hyped to share it with the world. REDINK: Tell your fans something....a quote perhaps db: When things get rough in my life and I'm feeling depressed and anxious, I repeat the following to myself as I fall asleep. It helps me return to the present moment and remember that no matter what, I am okay. "What's meant for me will always be." This concludes our interview with dani bby. RED INK  wishes her all the best with her musical journey. Support this very talented artist and follow her on social media.

Healthy Eating AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar

H

i again my favorite RED INK foodies! Thank you for supporting the RED INK family and I hope you are enjoying the monthly recipes. With Easter coming up very soon, I’m sure many families that are celebrating are planning on a special meal to share with family and friends. This month’s roast recipe is a crowd favorite, and one of my personal favorites! I know some people are nervous to cook a whole roast at home because if you make any errors in the seasoning or doneness then it would be quite an expensive mistake. For this recipe, please invest in a quality meat thermometer. Trust me, it will be your insurance policy for getting the meat to the doneness that you prefer. I prefer medium-well so I take my meat to an internal temperature to about 140 to 145 degrees. Remember, that your meat temperature will continue to rise even after you pull it out of the oven. So if you are aiming 145, then pull it out when the thermometer gets to 140 and the carry over cooking will take the temperature up to 145. Also, make sure you rest your meat before carving. This will ensure that the juices have time to redistribute within the meat instead of running out on your cutting board. I hope that you do try out this recipe and have a wonderful and blessed Easter and beginning of Spring. Enjoy!

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Chop rosemary, sage, and thyme; combine herbs with salt, pepper, garlic, and oil. Coat roast evenly with mixture on all sides and place in roasting pan. 2. Roast 20 minutes or until browned. Reduce oven to 350°F; cook 1–1 1/2 hours and until roast is 125°F (for medium rare; warm red center), 130°F (medium; warm pink center), or up to 170°F (well done). Use a meat thermometer to accurately ensure doneness. Transfer roast to cutting board; let stand 10–15 minutes before slicing. Temperature will rise 5–10°F during this time.

RECIPE: Standing Rib Roast with
