ALEX TREBEK

Legendary Jeoprady Host has Read his Final Answer

A

lex Trebek lost his long battle with pancreatic cancer on November 8th at the age of 80. He was an award winning, Guinness Record holding game show host, who is quite possibly the most iconic television personality to ever grace the screen. Mr. Trebek holds the Guinness record for most episodes of a game show hosted by the same person which was earned in 2014. He won dozens of awards over the years; including seven daytime Emmy’s and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. To say that Alex Trebek had an accomplished career would be a gross understatement. Alex Trebek was Canadian born, and got his start in the media industry as a radio news broadcaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Company. Soon after his beginnings reading news on the radio in the evenings after his university classes were finished, he moved on to host of the Canadian teen dance show call Music Hop, in the mid 1960’s. After a few years there, he switched over to covering sporting events for the CBC, everything from curling to horse racing. While broadcasting on radio and

1940–2020 covering sporting events, Alex Trebek got his first taste of hosting a game show when he was brought on as the host of Reach for the Top, a quiz show featuring high school students, and later he went on to host an adult quiz style show called Strategy. After moving to the United States in 1973, realizing that game shows were definitely his niche, he moved on to host The Wizard of Odds, High Rollers, and The $128,000 Question. In 1984, Alex Trebek became the name and face of the newly rebooted Jeopardy! The rest is history…. He continued that role for 36 years. And Jeopardy continues to be ranked as the Number One game show of all time. Since Jeopardy! is a daily syndicated show, he was in America’s prime time face every single day for the last 36 years, and that is something that will get a guy recognized. He became the face of the game show, the face of the quiz show, not just Jeopardy!; because Jeopardy! became the show that all other quiz shows are compared too. There were no bells and whistles, or colorful graphics, Jeopardy! was a show of integrity and intelligence, and the only defining aspect of the show was Alex Trebek and his

iconic voice. The show was all about pitting people against each other over the years to see who the most generally knowledgeable person out there is. And who had the honor of speaking the “answers” in search of the “questions”… Alex Trebek. His voice was a unique singular tone that was perfect for such a task, and quite frankly, I don’t believe anyone else on the planet could have done the job that Alex did. Trebek did not just ask the questions though; he lived

as a person with integrity, and demonstrated a work ethic, that is sadly gone in today’s society. He chose to work even during the pain and treatments for his cancer over the last few years, rather than seek respite. And his fans adored him for it. And perhaps, that adoration is what gave him those extra few years that doctors had told him were not possible. And the life he lived, he lived with humility and generosity, he had many charities that he supported, he gave millions of dollars to over the years; World Vision Canada, to help impoverished people, to the University of Ottawa, his alma mater to fund the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue, which pays to bring in speakers from around the world to inspire the youth of today, he funded scholarship programs, he supported the USO and traveled to worldwide military bases to show support for our troops, and he supported several homeless shelters and programs related to poverty all around the California area he called home. Alex Trebek was not just a game show host, he was a hero. Mr. Trebek, you have left behind a legacy that will be hard to follow. You took a simple quiz show and turned into a game that everyone in America knows and has seen at least once in their lifetime. You have a voice and image that is iconic, and you leave behind millions of fans that adored seeing you every day, you were like part of the family in every American living room. You will be missed and forever remembered as our “Host of Jeopardy, Alex Trebek.” By Michael Devine u 5

BADDA GENERAL

B

adda General, who is quickly solidifying himself as one of the "Baddest" artists cruising Jamaica's musical landscape. With red hot songs like "Money App," "I Wish" and "Outside" among others, Badda General is destined to take over dancehall with the digital release of his wildly entertaining debut album "Money App PROJECT" on October 27. On the highly anticipated effort, the talented artist brings a necessary fresh fusion of lyrical dexterity and humor to the industry. The "Money App PROJECT" is adorned with 10 songs that see Badda General offering a rock solid dancehall sound track, which will have music lovers rocking from start to finish. Without question, listeners will also likely find themselves reciting the witty lyrics verbatim or erupting in incessant laughter from the funny and relatable content. Hands down, "I Wish" boasts some of the year's most memorable verses from the song's start. “Mi wish when you drive out, yu car bruk down 10

Front tire flat, spare you have none When you go out fi look pon di damage, Di Almighty mek a heavy rain come down There is genuinely a lot more humor in store, which shines through nearly every song on the hard-hitting debut Badda General effort. The theme of money is also uniquely interpolated across a number of the songs on the album including "New Money," "Run It Forward," "House" and naturally, the title track "Money App." But other relatable topics are also "deh bout." Wayne Wonder adds his ultra smooth vocals to "Treez" -- a slow tempo ode to the high grade. Meanwhile, ZJ Liquid joins Badda General for the upbeat and radio friendly "Spring Water." Whether Badda General is detailing if a girl plays him, they must "Run It Forward" (i.e., pay back all the money he has spent), wowing the ladies on "Swing Song," or killing 'em with "Bay Style" (and a wicked flute), the selector turned Dancehall artist ensures consistent and entertaining music through out the "Money App PROJECT."

RED INK MAGAZINE

Amidst an onslaught of hard times hitting the world during the Covid-19 pandemic, Badda General navigated the perils of a shaky industry by giving fans an infectious brand of music they can both vibe and chuckle to. Badda General has found his niche and he's rolling with it. What's so amazing about Badda General's ascent is that endorsement from international personalities, DJs, sound systems, influencers, media and music lovers have helped thrust Badda General to a prime spot in Dancehall. Badda General, born Omari Lawrence in Montego Bay, Jamaica, is by all means a triple threat who's musical heritage dates back to the tender age of 7 as a selector/DJ. By the age of 14, he was one of the hottest DJs (affectionately known as "Froggy" by fans) in Western Jamaica on the popular “Pieces" sound system. Following his tenure on Pieces through 2001, the young DJ started his own "Madd Squad" sound. Rising in prominence, Madd Squad even made it to the prestigious Irish and Chin “World Clash" sound system competition in both Jamaica and New York. By 2010, Badda General's love of music transitioned into record production, allowing the talent to work with top names in Reggae/Dancehall like Buju Banton , Wayne Wonder, Sizzla, Charly Black, Pressure , Macka Diamond and many more. What once started as a local buzz has quickly expanded to international territories. Badda General's "Money App PROJECT" has all the right elements in place to easily make it 2020's best Dancehall contribution. Kristine Alicia “Love God, love people, and stand for justice.”

B

orn Kristine Alicia McCaw this singer/songwriter hails from Kingston, Jamaica and moved to the USA when she was 13. She comes from a musical background and like many reggae singers, her musical background started in church. She has four brothers, a music teacher, a producer, and two that are themselves artistes. She also has a sister who is a dub poet. Her father, a pastor and musician, taught her classical piano. Kristine Alicia became actively involved in shows and performances in Junior High and High School and was encouraged by her father to take voice lessons in classical music for which she is very grateful today. She attended Oral Robert’s University majoring in Mass Communications with a minor in music, with a Master’s degree in Music Business from the University of Miami. While attending college she became a backup singer for gospel artiste Papa San and Nigel Lewis. This eventually led to the recording of her first album “Get Ready”, produced by Nigel Lewis, in 2007, which propelled her into the forefront of the Caribbean Gospel community, where she received 8 nominations at the 2009 Marlin Awards and took home both Artist of the Year and Female Reggae Vocal Performance. Kristine chose to expand her boundaries in judicial by doing more than just gospel music. She wanted to talk about topics that included love and social justice. While in Jamaica for a photoshoot, she was introduced to Rory “Stone Love” Gilligan who took an interest in her career and gave her a track to write on. This led to him producing her next reggae album. “Songs from Zion” is a classic Roots Reggae album, rich in inspirational messaging, which was released in February 2017. The album experienced widespread exposure on radio and early notoriety in magazines, while also charting on iTunes top 10 and Billboard’s top 15 Reggae album charts. It also received high praise from Reggaeville, Zona Reggae, Reggae Vibes, &The Jamaican Observer to name a few. The album received a special review by John Masouri of Echoes Magazine where Kristine Alicia was also dubbed artist of the month. United Reggae listed Songs From Zion in its list 12

of Top 20 albums in 2017 at the end of that year. Kristine Alicia took a hiatus from recording, except for a few singles, to take care of her husband Brian Caldwell, who sadly passed away in August 2020. Her latest release is a powerful inspirational single, “Black Diamond”, all about overcoming personal tragedy, a call to action for all survivors, victims, and those suffering in silence. “Black Diamond” is not only a reflection of her personal endeavors but also musically feels like a universal soundtrack for a post-pandemic world. Since her emergence, Kristine Alicia has performed nationally and internationally while producing singles that reflect her development as a person and as an artiste. Throughout this time of growth, Kristine Alicia has collaborated, opened for, and performed with artists the likes of Third World, Taurus Riley, Papa San, Etana, Nadine Sutherland, Warrior King, and Freddie McGregor. She has performed in the USA, Canada, Africa, and in multiple Caribbean countries but her biggest show to date was headlining the Groove Party in Nairobi, Kenya in which she performed to over thirtythousand (30,000+) people. RED INK Magazine had the pleasure of asking Kristine Alicia a few questions and this is what she had to say. REDINK: At what age did you realize that you wanted to be a singer? KA:I've been singing in groups since I was probably 9 years but didn’t decide to take it seriously until I was in college - I was about 19 perhaps REDINK: How long have you been on the music scene? KA: Since college REDINK: Do you write your own lyrics? KA: Yes for almost all of my songs. REDINK: How does it feel to be a female singer being in a male dominant industry? KA: It used to be a little intimidating but now that I

14

know myself more I take all experiences as blossoming and adding texture to the whole picture! REDINK: Are you working on any new projects? KA: Yes, I am - I’ll be releasing a few singles in the upcoming months. REDINK: If you could collaborate with someone that you've never worked with before, who would it be? KA: Mmmmm Luciano would be nice. REDINK: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? KA: Doing music either performing or teaching in some capacity. REDINK: Say something to your fans, a quote perhaps. KA: We all have so much beauty inside each one of us let’s use our gifts to discover what we each have inside instead of pointing out our differences. I hope my music points more to that every time you hear it. Well said Kristine, this is the end of the interview. Please follow Kristine Alicia on her social media. 10 Weeks In Jamaica: Theatre Conversations from Jamaica to the World! U.S.-based international theatre production company AKIBA ABAKA ARTS partners with Jamaica’s RAW MANAGEMENT AGENCY to present an online talk series for global theatre artists and the Jamaican Diaspora: FREE EVENT: Live online, Sundays @ 4PM ET through January 3, 2021 at Howlround.com and Akiba Abaka Arts YouTube 10 WEEKS IN JAMAICA: Theatre Conversations from Jamaica to the World! is a series of lively weekly discussions with Jamaica's leading theatre artists exploring the histories and memories of—and future visions for—the Jamaican stage. Produced by Bostonbased international theatre production company Akiba Abaka Arts, in partnership with Kingston-based talent agency and production company RAW Management, the series has been connecting Jamaican theatre artists with a global platform of theatre makers looking to gain new knowledge, share best practices around progressive theatre-making, and engage members of the greater Caribbean Diaspora longing for familiar stories of home. On Sunday, November 22 at 4 PM was titled DANCEHALL REGGAE AND THE NETTLEFORD EFFECT. The sounds and movements of Dancehall Reggae music scores the landscape of Jamaica’s cultural identity. Rooted in the AfroJamaican Kumina and Mento traditions, this form of popular music is among the country’s largest exports. The Honorable Rex Nettleford, OM, FIJ, OCC – a Jamaican scholar and choreographer, and co-founder of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica – shared philosophies on the importance of contemporary Jamaican music and its linkage to pre-colonial African societies. He expressed these philosophies through dance theatre and a rigorous support for the arts in academia, as well as in the shaping of Jamaica’s national identity. The conversation brought together three beneficiaries of Nettleford’s legacy for a conversation on how Dancehall 18

Reggae shows up on the Jamaican stage: Orville ”Xpressionz” Hall, artistic director for Theatre Xpressionz (l.) and chief judge for Jamaica’s number one dance program “Dancing Dynamite”; Marlon D. Simms (r.), Dean of the School of Dance and Artistic Director for the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica; and Neila Ebanks (c.), a dancer, choreographer and educator considered one of the Caribbean’s most innovative performing artists. The conversation is moderated by Jamaican-American theater entrepreneur, actress and director Akiba Abaka (right). Future programs in the series include: Sunday, December 6, 4PM EST JAMAICAN PLAYWRIGHTS ANSWER GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (PART 1) Speakers: David Tulloch and Fabian Thomas Sunday, December 13, 4PM EST JAMAICAN PLAYWRIGHTS ANSWER GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (PART 2) Speakers: Dahlia Harris and Amba Chevannes Sunday, December 20, 4PM EST QUEER NARRATIVES FROM THE JAMAICAN STAGE Speakers: Karl Williams and Webster McDonald Sunday, December 27, 4PM EST LEADERS OF A NEW STAGE Speakers: Evone Walters, Andrew Barracks and Rayon McLean Sunday, January 3, 4PM EST AFRO-FUTURISM AND THE JAMAICAN STAGE Speakers: Tanya Batson Savage and Michael Holgate Often seen as an ideal tropical vacation destination, the island nation of Jamaica is a tourism and cultural hub of the Caribbean best-known globally for ska and reggae music, world-class sprinters, ganja culture, sunshine and beautiful beaches. Yet, Jamaica also possesses a theatrical legacy with catalytic approaches to decolonization, language reclamation, indigenous narrative formation, community development and nation-building. As the world focuses on achieving racial equity, the rich history and contemporary narratives of the Jamaican stage provides valuable learnings for theatre practitioners and audiences in search of models and memories of progressive community-building through the arts.

“When Jamaica closed its borders to travelers earlier this year we were scheduled to be on the island to work on a new play, Bar Girl of Jamaica by Robert Johnson Jr., work with Jamaican theatre practitioners, and engage the theatre community for future collaborations” says Akiba Abaka, co-artistic director of Akiba Abaka Arts. “But the pandemic forced us, like many others, to do a major pivot and reimagine how to engage the Jamaican theatre community without being on the island”. The idea for “10 Weeks in Jamaica” came about during a virtual meeting of Jamaican theatre artists hosted by Kingston Creative, where Abaka’s team met Nadean Rawlins, founder and managing director of Raw Management Agency, and Evone Walters of Artribute JA, a performing arts company. The group discussed the challenges of creating sustainable theatre in Jamaica and saw an opportunity to connect Jamaican theatre artists with the global theatre platform HowlRound at Boston’s Emerson College and the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at City University of New York, whose Executive Director Frank Hentschker, provided advised the team on bringing the series together. “This partnership with Akiba Abaka Arts is timely because it comes at a period in our generation when the landscape of the Jamaican theatre is changing right before our very eyes,” Rawlins says. “With Akiba Abaka Arts’ mission to provide access to theatre practitioners to tell stories on the global stage, and RAW Management's commitment to promote Jamaican talent internationally, together we are able to contribute in reshaping the narrative of Jamaican theatre.”, says Rawlins. "HowlRound is a platform made by and for global theatre makers to connect around ideas that challenge our status quo. We couldn't be more excited to be in conversation with an incredible group of Jamaican artists and culture workers for the first time through the 10 Weeks in Jamaica project,” says Jamie Gahlon, director and co-founder of HowlRound. “The

possibilities for connection, inspiration, and learning that it provides embodies the power of what our virtual meeting ground can offer," Gahlon says. ABOUT AKIBA ABAKA ARTS Akiba Abaka Arts is an international team of professional actors, directors, designers and producers that creates plays, concerts and talks centered on narratives from the global Black world -- and tours them internationally. Darth Vader Actor David Prowse has Died at 85

T

he actor that played the legendary villain Darth Vader has died. David Prowse, the man who was under the suit and helmet of Darth Vader died November 28th as a result of illness related to pancreatic cancer. He created the gait and donned the most iconic suit in all of television history. Darth Vader’s evil walk and jet black suit is an image that almost everyone on the planet is familiar with. What most people do not realize is that Darth Vader in Star Wars was actually made up of four actors. The voice was James Earl Jones, the breathing was Ben Burtt using a scuba apparatus, and the face shown when the helmet was removed in Return of the Jedi was that of Sebastian Shaw. However the person under the suit that developed his own evil walk and carried himself with such evil confidence and grace throughout the original Star Wars Trilogy was David Prowse. David Prowse was born in Bristol, England in 1935. At the age of 16 he decided to focus on body-building. But although he had an enormous stature and was able to attain Olympian proportions, he was told at the Mr. Universe competition that he had “ugly feet” and could never win, so he then focused on competitive weight lifting instead. He went on to be crowned British Heavyweight Champion in weight lifting for 3 years in the 1960s. He opened his first gym in 1969 and met and became lifelong friends with fellow body-builder Arnold Schwarzenegger. His acting career began in the early 1960s when an agent

22

recruited him to play “Death” because of his ominous stature in a play titled Don’t Let Summer Come. After that he was given a minor role in the early James Bond film Casino Royale where he played Frankenstein’s Monster. This role would lead to him becoming a starring role of the same character in the movies The Horror of Frankenstein in 1970 and Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell in 1974. In 1976 he was recruited to don the garb of Darth Vader and retained that role for Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Although he held this titular role, he often received less credit than James Earl Jones who was hired to do the villains voice after George Lucas decided that Mr. Prowse’s “English country farmer voice”was not appropriate for the role. Because of this, even though, Darth Vader was his biggest Hollywood role, he always preferred his more personal role that he portrayed as the Green Cross Man. The Green Cross Man was an iconic PSA advert super hero created to raise awareness of Road Safety to keep young children safe, he reportedly felt that knowing he saved real lives in this role was more rewarding than any other character he played. He held this role for 14 years in England and was awarded an MBE, Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2000 for his role. I for one had the pleasure of meeting Mr. David Prowse at a Sci-Fi convention many years ago, and will forever remember him as Darth Vader. Just know Mr. Prowse, whether you knew it or not, your iconic roles as Frankenstein and Darth Vader were memorable and will never be forgotten. You were a legend in your own right and you will be missed. May you rest in peace. By Michael Devine u 22 4th Annual ICNA-MAC Conference, 2003

i again my favorite RED INK foodies!

Try these tasty treats and make it part of your holiday season. Enjoy!

Instructions:

1-In a large bowl using a hand-held mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter for 1 minute on medium speed until completely smooth and creamy. Add the brown sugar and molasses and beat on medium high speed until combined and creamy-looking. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. Next, beat in egg and vanilla on high speed for 2 full minutes. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. The butter may separate; that’s ok. 2- In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, and cloves together until combined. On low speed, slowly mix into the wet ingredients until combined. The cookie dough will be quite thick and slightly sticky. Divide dough in half and place each onto a large piece of plastic wrap. Wrap each up tightly and pat down to create a disc shape. Please see photo and description above in my post. Chill discs for at least 3 hours and up to 3 days. Chilling is mandatory for this cookie dough. I always chill mine overnight. 3- Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line 2-3 large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. (Always recommended for cookies.) Set aside. 4.- Remove 1 disc of chilled cookie dough from the refrigerator. Generously flour a work surface, as well as your hands and the rolling pin. Don’t be afraid to continually flour the work surface as needed- this dough can be sticky. Roll out disc until 1/4-inch thick. Cut into shapes. Place shapes 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets. Re-roll dough scraps until all the dough is shaped. Repeat with remaining disc of dough. 5- Bake cookies for about 9-10 minutes. If your cookie cutters are smaller than 4 inches, bake for about 8 minutes. If your cookie cutters are larger than 4 inches, bake for about 11 minutes. My oven has hot spots and yours may too- so be sure to rotate the pan once during bake time. 6- Allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes on the cookie sheet. Transfer to cooling rack to cool completely. Once completely cool, decorate as desired. 7- Cookies stay fresh covered at room temperature for up to 1 week.

RECIPE: Gingerbread Cookies Ingredients: •10 Tablespoons (2/3 cup; 145g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature •3/4 cup (150g) packed light or dark brown sugar •2/3 cup (200g) unsulphured molasses •1 large egg, at room temperature •1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract •3 and 1/2 cups (437g) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled) •1 teaspoon baking soda •1/2 teaspoon salt •1 Tablespoon ground ginger (yes, 1 full Tablespoon!) •1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon •1/2 teaspoon ground allspice •1/2 teaspoon ground cloves •optional: easy cookie icing or royal icing

Polo Fur King the Designer REDINK: What would you say was the moment you knew that being a designer was your calling? PK: It was around 1998, everyone had commented on what I was wearing for years. My mother and sisters always wore fur and it caught on with me adding it to my garments. REDINK: Who or what was your biggest help with your passion for fashion? PK: The neighborhood that I grew up in Bergen County, Teaneck New Jersey, I live within a community of entertainers. I naturally was encouraged to get into making “Street Couture Fashion”. It was a village of folks from my own community, where street fashion was what the “Hustlers” wore which were the “Tim’s (Timberland) boots, jeans just the cool fashions of the people that I saw on the streets REDINK: What made you try many types of fashion? PK: My eyes were always looking at people from the neighborhood and they like the customized special order type of clothing. People like Sean Piddy Combs with Sean John’s and Jay Z that tried different type of “Street Fashion” and I made things from what people said they liked about what I wore in a similar look. I had a background that money wasn’t an issue, it gave me a platform without limits. REDINK: Where did the name Polo the Furking designer come from? PK: Without any doubt my favorite of all designers is Ralph Lauren. The name Polo was natural to choose and fur is what I added to all my garments. Easy choice to make, I also would say Dapper Dan extraordinary tailoring with his designs. And like in my logo, we come from Kings I put it altogether to create my brand and 4 businesses. REDINK: If you could design for anyone that’s on your wishlist. Who would that person be? PK: Yes, I do have a special person and it is my favorite actress “Meryl Streep” an actress with a very natural look that can be considered to be distinguished and I would say “soccer mom” vibe. My vision for her, would bring out the “Couture” fashion style. It would be a pair of Tim’s (Timberland boots) unlaced definitely 6 inches, a cowboy hat with a bandana around the neck and fitted jeans, ”Street Couture Fashion”. As you know I could do that look, the sky’s the limit. REDINK: Do you have a team/network? PK: The photographers that I work with Felix Natal Jr and also Jaymes Leavitt out of Boston,Massachusetts and I do all the styling. I am thankful that God keeps me going. I will be celebrating 23 years in January 2021. My Fashion is done with a King style.
