What would you consider to be the most significant achievement of Noon By Noor since its establishment?

Would you say that there have been changes in how people approach fashion since you launched your brand compared to now in 2022?

Shaikha Haya: Our brand longevity. With over a decade of history and previously showing at NYFW, we emerged from the global slowdown of 2020 with a renewed sense of focus and preparedness for London Fashion Week. We elevated not only our offering, but also our campaign and communication around the collections as well as our e-commerce experience. We’re very proud of the path we’ve charted out for Noon By Noor.

Shaikha Noor: Our goals are always longterm with short-term actions that work towards them. Being recognised and stocked internationally in the UK and Italy, since we took the opportunity to refresh and revalue our collection offer due to the pandemic, has been an achievement, as well as growing our home market stockists.

How would you describe Noon By Noor?

Shaikha Noor: At the heart of our philosophy are the women who wear our clothes; individuals of style and substance who value quality as well as a fresh and intelligent design perspective, and, who themselves, exist to make a difference. Whether she’s throwing on a liberally embellished jacket over a slip dress or working a vintage wedding dress, she does not shy away from creativity in the service of self-expression.

one. She has in great part inspired the brand, and her unconditional support is what keeps pushing me forward.

Fashion has long been known to be a creative form of selfexpression. In fact, research suggests that the clothes we wear can positively affect our confidence and our character too. Established in Bahrain in 2008, Noon By Noor is an exquisite brand that has produced impeccable collections that encourage this self-expression.

Shaikha Noor: We have a common understanding of our goals and work very closely with our team to achieve them. From sampling to the final product, sales and marketing – we each have something to add and feel comfortable challenging each other’s ideas and making decisions together with the brand’s interest at heart.

Shaikha Haya: Customers are more aware and more open to all sorts of styles and ideas now than they were when we first launched. Mostly it's down to the speed of communication through social media, the internet, and a younger emerging generation of critics and influencers. Fashion is always a reflection of what’s going on in the wider society; customers are seeking out smaller brands like ours with personality and creativity rather than sticking to only historically established brands worn by previous generations.

Shaikha Noor: It's been an incredible journey. From the first-ever collection that we presented to an intimate group of family members at The Ritz-Carlton Beach in 2004 – before we even launched Noon By Noor – up to our New York Fashion Week runway shows and now, our London Fashion Week presentations, it’s been a slow and steady ride up.

Shaikha Haya: Noon By Noor is a women’s fashion label that delivers an everevolving perspective on what women’s clothing should give us - mixing heritage and novelty on a foundation of luxury and self-assured femininity.

What are your short-term and long-term goals for Noon By Noor? Any exciting announcements we can share with our readers?

Shaikha Haya: We are looking forward to our launch of resort wear for a new branch of Noon By Noor at the end of the year and the relaunch of our girlswear line early 2023. Currently, we are working with a fantastic creative team internationally to produce the assets for our London Fashion Week showing this month.

What is the design philosophy of Noon By Noor? How would you describe the woman who wears Noon By Noor?

We’re grateful for every step of the way and the unwavering support we’ve received from my mother, Her Highness Shaikha Lulwa bint Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, since day DESIGNING FOR WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE

This month, Farah Baig speaks to the visionary designers behind the brand Noon By Noor, Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa, who share their brand philosophy, their thoughts on fashion and design, and exciting announcements for the brand.

Noon By Noor is a brand which stems from two designers. How do you believe your individuality and similarities have influenced the brand?

Since launching Noon By Noor in 2008, how has the brand grown?

As renowned fashion designers, what are your thoughts on emerging designers in the Kingdom and the rest of the region? How do you believe they compare to international designers?

Shaikha Noor: Consistency and hard work is really important. It’s not always easy, but when you get through the hard times, it’s always worth it.

Happy 25th Anniversary to Bahrain This Month!

Shaikha Haya: Inclusivity in any form can only be a good thing and fashion should be for everyone, not just for one body type or age group. We want to feel that our clothes help our customers to be confident and be

themselves. To dress up, to be seen, to say that they’re here in their individual way.

Do you have any advice for those wishing to enter the industry and launch their own brand?

Shaikha Noor: People are much more discerning - there are a lot of products out there and our customer today looks for style, quality and good business ethics. Fast fashion has a place in the market especially when customers mix pieces with designer or high fashion. But customers are much more aware of the impact of fast fashion on the environment today – much more so now than before and this is reflected in their shopping habits.

What are your thoughts on the inclusivity of fashion for different body types and individual preferences?

Shaikha Haya: Listen to constructive criticism; it’s part of any brand’s evolvement.

Shaikha Noor: Our Fall 2022 collection was one of our favourite collections so far. We brought the collection to life with plays of materials and textures and created interesting contrasts using colours, fabrics, and silhouettes – a clash of clichés. It has already received some great compliments from industry insiders and customers alike.

Shaikha Noor: We encourage women to define what success means to them and achieve it. Whether it’s building a business, a family, both or maybe focusing on themselves – just set the target and go after it.

Shaikha Haya: There’s great design talent in the region and everyone has their own unique, awe-inspiring backstory. Local or International, both paths rely on powerful strategies and have distinct advantages. It’s a matter of realising a vision, setting goals, planning diligently and being patient. Success is a long game.

Fashionistas around the world are loving this season’s trends and it’s clear why. This month we explore the Genny AW 2022/2023 collection which brings you the best of both worlds – weaving together minimalist silhouettes and strong colour palettes in a rich variety of fabrics. Our editor, Farah Baig, lets us in on her top accessories to go with the collection too!

FASHION | get the look September 2022 www.womanthismonth.com98

The collection also makes use of a variety of materials: jacquard with animalier graphics, paired with knit tops enriched by Swarovski crystals tone-on-tone and also combined with textiles reminiscent of liquid mercury. Looking at the volumes we find another juxtaposition, with wide bomber jackets and slightly flared miniskirts and finally, in the feminine and masculine elements. This time, rendered with the idea of the tuxedo bowtie, untied around the neck and transformed into the detail of a garment and of a long dress, like a man’s jacket worn with just a pair of very tall boots, like a suede stocking, or with orchid decorated pumps. Lastly, the trousers. In the accessories, light dictates the pace, with a cascade of rhinestones that wraps the waist and the boot.

Bringing together sharp contrasts in a harmonious fashion can result in some of the most shockingly alluring looks. The Genny AW collection 2022/2023 has been created according to the vision of the Creative Director, Sara Cavazza Facchini. The result is a collection that is rock-solid yet soft, linear yet sinuous – very clearly presenting minimalism and maximalism together as one.

Iconic Fashion

The minimalism is seen through the silhouettes, super polished, reminiscent of the 90s. The maximalism is in the colours with a very strong palette of tones like chocolate, coral, fuchsia, purple, tangerine and lime that characterise the looks. Genny’s style is an ode to sensuality, without rifts or stretches but that is, actually, the translation into clothes of being a woman, strong and effortless at the same time.

The collection is filled with what could be described as ‘liquified mirrors’. Shocking thigh-high metallic boots in silver and gold, patent leather stilettos and bags, and a kaleidoscope of colours including aqua, green, ultraviolet, pink, biscuit, fuschia and wine. It’s bold. It’s eyecatching. It’s wishlist worthy. The perfect accessory to elevate your aesthetic.

BY FAR designers, sisters Valentina Ignatova, Sabina Gyosheva and Denitsa Bumbarova, have done it again with a truly exquisite AW collection 2022. BY FAR’s ever supple mind will once again accessorise our living and shared passion for play.

Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP) and Accredited Chartered Manager (CMI), Eman Deabil, has written a number of articles for Woman This Month on the topic of ‘Women’s Path to The Boardroom’ and given readers valuable insights into how to climb the corporate ladder and get to the boardroom.

In Bahrain we have 42 publicly listed companies on Bahrain Bourse spanning over nine categories, as seen on the Bahrain Bourse website. An analysis was conducted by looking at the Board of Directors of each company and concluded the following:

WOMEN REPRESENTATION IN BAHRAIN’S BOARDROOMS

In 2021 and early 2022, we examined women representation in the boardroom carried out by a sample of 117 organisations based in Bahrain, the percentage was 9.8 percent in 2021, and 11 percent in 2022.

In this article we cover the listed companies in Bahrain. According to the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) a "Listed Company means any company whose securities are listed on the Stock Exchange”.

LIFESTYLE | opinion 102www.bahrainthismonth.com

Women in Bahrain, and all around the world, are making waves in the community through their extensive contributions. The role of women in the boardroom in the Kingdom can be strengthened if there is a push for gender equality. Simply put: representation across the board matters.

5.9 percent - Women Representation in Bahrain Listed

In this article, Eman follows up by looking at the current situation and provides a researched insight into the current situation revealing dramatic statistics of women representation in Bahrain listed companies.

A leading authority on corporate governance in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Saleh Hussain, shared his views on the subject: “The onboarding of women to various boards of directors in Bahrain needs to receive serious support from not only the government but most importantly from

LIFESTYLE | opinion www.bahrainthismonth.com September 2022 103

From the above, we can observe that 22 of the total 371 board seats are attributed to women, which represents 5.9 percent Whereas 349 are attributed to men, which represents 94.1 percent. 26 companies out of 42 (more than the half) have no women representation (0 percent) or in other words, 26 listed companies have all-male boards. Boards’ chairmanship appears limited to males, and no female is chairing any board.

From the above analysis, we can conclude that “over-boarding” is limited to male directors in the listed companies, let alone the board directorship roles in other non-listed companies. Some directors are serving in more than 20 – 30 boards inside and outside Bahrain.

According to the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) France has the strongest representation of women in the boardrooms of the biggest listed companies at 45.3 percent. If Bahrain can score an increase of three percent every year, it will take 13 years to achieve it.

According to the ISS Governance (US), “Directors are considered OVER-BOARDED if they sit on a number of boards which could result in excessive time commitments and an inability to fulfill their duties”. The Corporate Governance Code of Bahrain is recommending under principle 1: “One person should not hold more than three directorships in public companies in Bahrain with the provision that no conflict of interest may exist, and the board should not propose the election or reelection of any director who does.”

To make this vision possible, we need to have a profound action plan to develop and groom women for directorship positions.

various societal entities such as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Continuous lobbying, events and utilisation of various media channels will make a difference.

“In my opinion, the current board membership in Bahrain needs overhauling. Male dominance deprives corporations of diversity of thoughts and discourages application of good governance.”

report published by Deloitte ‘Women in the boardroom | A global perspective’ highlighted the initiatives that were undertaken to increase women’s representation in boardrooms (e.g. mentoring programmes, director development programmes, quota requirements, UAE Gender Balance Council).

Over-boarding is not a recommended practice anyway and prevents increasing women representation. The report that was published by Aurora50 in June 2022 ‘Non-executive board careers in the UAE: A path to gender Balance’ stated that: “It is vital for the number of women on boards to increase, but it is equally important that this to be done by increasing the pool of women instead of ‘overboarding’ existing female directors.” The same report highlighted the increase of women representation from 3.5 percent in 2020 to 8.9 percent of all UAE listed board positions (i.e. 115 companies). Another

By analysing the members of the boards, around 60 duplications were observed, and hence we were left with 311 unique directors (actual persons). The total number of male directors were 289, out of which 42 are serving in two to six boards

In other words, let’s imagine how you feel after temporarily losing sight of your child in a public space, like a supermarket. When you are reunited with your child - after a separation you were not in control of - you often hug them, kiss them, hold them, but then, that relief can turn into frustration and anger. When your child is having defensive detachment meltdowns after school, that's how they're feeling: Relieved to see you, but frustrated at having been separated and over their lack of control.

Try and set your alarm, for maybe 15 minutes earlier every day, so that you have a bit of time to actually connect with your child and really fill up their connection cup before you send them to school. Spending this extra time together in the morning can help ease the child into the separation of the school day while feeling more strongly attached to their parent. Let them know you are connected even when you are not together.

For mamas who have been missing their little one all day, being pushed away can sting a bit, but this especially frustrating and personal form of after-school restraint collapse is totally normal, and actually a sign that your child really does love you a lot.

We know that after-school meltdowns are a real thing. After a long day of school, it can be hard for kids to hold it together. They may melt down or have an emotional outburst, and sometimes - especially with young children who attend preschool - there is one particular emotion – Anger. A lot of times, this anger is directed at mum and dad.

Has your child ever had a meltdown right after school? Ouiam El Hassani explores why it happens and how to deal with them?

Instead of suppressing a display of defensive detachment, there are healthy ways parents can soften the intensity of the separation , and give kids room to be loud and intense when they need to be Parents can start their defense against defensive detachment meltdowns in the morning .

There are two amazing and very helpful books that you and your child can read together: The Kissing Hand (about a young raccoon leaving his mother to start school in the forest) and The Invisible String (about a mother who tells her children they are connected by an invisible string). A child may feel more connected if they have their own "kissing hand" or "invisible string" at school with them. Send a piece of you with them to school: a photo, a necklace, keychain etc.

What are DetachmentDefensiveMeltdowns?

Any parent who has been through it knows how real it feels. It's a subconscious thing, they don't even know they're doing it but it's very real. They defensively detach from you by being angry at you, and shoving you away, and may call you names, and while it's often loud, intense, and inconvenient, parents should try looking at these displays of defensive detachment as a gift. Our children don't have the words to tell us what they are thinking and feeling, but this behavior can help us figure out what they need.

If you are dealing with defensive detachment meltdowns right now, remember that even if your child isn't showing it, they do love you, mama. More than they can ever say.

Let them let it out: Sometimes, all the quality time in the morning and all the loving reminders from home can't totally prevent a child's day away from you from being hard. If you sense a defensive detachment meltdown is coming on after pick up, it's best to take control of it by inviting it. I’m sure you weren’t expecting that!

www.womanthismonth.com September 2022 111

By taking a proactive approach and literally asking for the meltdown to happen, parents can speak to their children while their child can still understand them. If we wait until they're freaking out to take control, we can't. So, before your child loses the ability to hear you, let them know that you hear them. You hear that they need to release their emotions in a loud, intense and inconvenient way, and you are okay with it. Pull the car over or clear a space in the living room and just let those loud, flailing emotions come out. There should be no shaming, no blaming, no consequences, no punishing of any kind.
