The Kingdom of Bahrain has recently recorded a significant drop in the total number of active COVID-19 cases as well as recording one of the highest recovery rates in the region. With the hopes of moving towards normalcy, the authorities have announced that schools and universities will likely be reopening in September. With this in mind, we explored selected school campuses and also discovered what some of Bahrain’s universities had to offer.

PICTURES WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

Last month, the first ever Virtual Reality (VR) mental health art exhibition entitled ‘Safer Spaces’ was launched in the Kingdom of Bahrain by The Art Space, located in Bahrain Bay. The collective consciousness art exhibition aimed to normalise and spark conversation around the topic of mental health in the Arab world. It featured a phenomenal collection of 70 artworks created by 19 emerging artists based in the GCC. BTM caught up with the founder and Managing Director of the Art Space, Esra Faraj, and Safer Spaces’ curator and participating artist, Zayn Al Qahtani, to find out more.

How did you pick the artists who showcased their work during the exhibition? ZQ: We dove into the exhibition with the mindset to do two things: promote emerging artists based in the Middle East, and display work that truly had enigmatic, communicative qualities when it came to Mental Health. We didn’t have a goal number of artists and just went into it with an open mind. We decided the final 19 collectively by featuring call-outs via social media (which received hundreds of applicants) and consecutively putting each work through the critique of The Art Space’s curatorial panel. Could you tell us more about some of the Bahraini artists that were featured? ZQ: We have a wonderful variety of Bahraini artists exhibiting at Safer Spaces. From first-time exhibitors to more seasoned emerging artists, to self-taught artists and ones who have gone on to international studies - the show runs the whole gamut of bountiful perspectives and intimate experiences that the contemporary Bahraini art scene has to offer. What led to your decision to center the exhibition on the subject of mental health? EF: Through our many discussions with emerging artists, a recurring topic close to everyone’s hearts surfaced: ‘How we can do our part to end the taboo around the conversation of Mental Health in the Middle East through Art?’. This gave me the drive to put together this exhibition. I believe the first step to overcoming such a complex issue is to acknowledge, discuss, and bring it to light. Only then can we see significant shifts in attitudes and creative solutions to such issues.

foremost – I love to use the human existence as a vessel to communicate various themes such as feminism, gender, contemporary culture, spirituality and alchemy. I am also a mixed media artist, so a lot of my work is multilayered with different processes and materials to achieve the final works.

healing is readily available and can take place. Our goal is to witness a significant shift in attitudes towards the conversation of mental health and brainstorming creative solutions to these issues.

Zayn, as an artist and curator of Safer Spaces, what is the outcome you were hoping to achieve?

EF: The technicalities behind building and developing a virtual art gallery tour was quite the challenge in the beginning. Everyone involved basically had to take a learn-as-we-go crash course in web development - rendering timings, software limitations, the heaviness of the files on the speed of the show - it was very “pick up and improve as we go along”.

ZQ: Safer Spaces is more than just an art exhibition – we wanted it to be a visual statement that everybody works through mental health issues every single day, and the more it is normalized the more

What were the biggest challenges you encountered when planning the exhibition?

Zayn, how would you describe your art? ZQ: I consider myself a figurative artist first and 8 August 2020

a communal space to champion artists from Bahrain and the GCC. I thrive to further advance the passion and knowledge of Art and Culture in the Gulf.

As the organizers of a virtual reality art exhibition, do you think there’s a possibility of the concept growing while the world faces the challenges of the coronavirus?

What are your thoughts on the art scene in Bahrain and the rest of the region?

EF & ZQ: Definitely! We feel that in such a fast-paced world it’s important for a gallery to be adaptable with the times, and our delving into technology is one way we’ve managed to communicate the art gallery experience to everyone locked down in their homes across the region. It’s only natural for technology and the global climate to evolve, so naturally, so must we. It’s always exciting to see how we can overcome these detours and bring our mission to light. Esra, could you tell us more about The Art Space and its objectives? EF: The Art Space is a creative hub, digital platform and art gallery rooted in Bahrain Bay, a new location for art and luxury situated in the heart of Manama. We are dedicated to fostering the GCC’s diverse and dynamic creative community, and endeavor to support and promote the visual arts and contemporary culture of the Arab world. A home for daring creativity and innovation, our vision is to create a space where ideas can merge and illuminate; a place for knowledge-sharing, celebration of contemporary culture and artistic practices. We are passionate about creating new and inspiring opportunities for artists and makers in the Gulf. By means of clever global-facing strategies and heartfelt dedication to our community, we aim to showcase our artists to the largest international audience possible. Since October 2018, I have translated my love for the arts into various initiatives to discover, support and promote Visual Art and artists from the region. One of my main objectives at The Art Space, is to adopt creative young talents in the Gulf by further developing their vision into reality. We aspire to create

Zayn

EF: The art scene in Bahrain has always been abundant with masterful creatives and has a rich archive of local artists and works that are prominent in contemporary 20th and 21st century art culture. We also want to mention and vocally appreciate that Bahrain has an abundance of art history to reference from, and many multiple heritage sites that are considered architectural beauties in their own right. The regional art scene has progressed dramatically over the past number of years and it is a very exciting time to be an artist or a gallery in the region at this moment in time. The millennial influence on the art world is undoubtedly a game changer and we can’t wait to see and actively participate in how the art culture here keeps evolving. What can the community do to support artists in the region? EF: The easiest ways to support regional artists is to follow their social media, share their profiles with people who might like them, and help put their work out on the forefront so that it doesn’t get drowned by social media algorithms. This helps artists and galleries connect with potential clients. The most impactful way to support artists and artisans in the region is to shop local. Instead of buying wholesale prints from a large, global company, purchase prints or originals from your favorite local artists – it’s a lot more personal and is giving back to an economy that is often overlooked. We’ve made sure to integrate an e-gallery into The Art Space website to support our artists and give their work the exposure they deserve – you can visit the shop and support your favorite artists at artspacebh.com/shop Are there any other projects in the pipeline? EF: We are always working on something new. For now, we are focusing on digital projects and attempting to push the boundaries of technology to deliver an art gallery experience.

Bahrain’s movie buffs are in for a treat with an exciting murder thriller, titled ‘It Happened That Night’, currently being produced and shot entirely in Bahrain. The movie, which will be in Hindi and English, features a range of Bahrain-based talents including Sneha Ajith, Amy Vaya, Ashwin Shenoy and Sunil Sasheendran. BTM’s Hasan Ahmad caught up with the movie’s director, Nabeel Bin Riaz, who enlightened us on what makes the project all the more special. So Nabeel, what can you tell us about your latest project - ‘It Happened That Night’? The movie brings together some of Bahrain’s talented residents and will have an expected run time of an hour. While I will be directing the movie, it is being produced by Sunil Sasheendran, and co-produced by Anton Charles II and myself under the joint banner of Solitary Queen Studios and Miraj Media. The movie’s protagonist is a police officer, played by Sunil, who made a grave mistake at some point in his career for which he has paid the ultimate price. Now being tasked with the investigation of a murder, he is met with various interesting incidents during the course of his search for the truth – all which encapsulate the main plot of the movie.

interview Depending on the status of the pandemic, we are looking forward to a theatrical release for two weeks in the GCC and later launch it on VOD platforms. We are also currently in talks with Amazon and Disney+. Are there any challenges you face with filming for the movie given the current outbreak? We are taking all necessary precautions as outlined by the government of Bahrain to ensure the safety of our cast and crew. We also keep the crew present during shoots to a minimum, maintain social distancing, wear masks and gloves when possible, disinfect our equipment and make use of sanitising products throughout the shoot.

You mentioned that the movie will feature a couple of iconic locations around Bahrain. Could you name a couple of locations that Bahrain’s audience can look forward to? The team’s passion for the project lies in creating a lasting impact in the world of media entertainment for viewers across the globe, and endeavour to etch an image of Bahrain that leaves a lasting image of the Kingdom through the art of film. As the saying goes ‹Home is where the Heart is’; here we are trying to showcase Bahrain, our home, to the world through our film. Hence, we decided to shoot in the streets of Manama Souq, Bahrain Bay and some really attractive locations.

Any words of advice for creative individuals hoping to delve into the film industry? Believe in your story, believe in yourself… Take your first step to turning your vision into a reality and the universe will work it out for you. Feel free to approach me or my team through Instagram or via email we are always open to new talent collaborating with us.

In addition, the Indian diaspora in the GCC, especially Bahrain, is a sizable number and we intend to showcase this diversity of Bahrain through our project. Though the team is primarily made up of expats, they are born and bred in the GCC, and see Bahrain as their home - striving to use the film as a means to showcase the Kingdom to the rest of the world. What can you tell us about the movie’s cast and how did you pick them? When I meet someone, I see a character in them and when I met each of them, I could only see them as the perfect match for my fictional characters. Each of them is an amazing actor and I’m really excited to see the end result. I cannot reveal further details on the roles they will be playing, but I can promise you that they won’t disappoint you. When do you expect to launch the movie and how do you plan on releasing it? We are currently aiming to launch the movie between late 2020 or early 2021 on a Videoon-Demand (VOD) platform so viewers can enjoy the movie from the safety of their homes. www.bahrainthismonth.com

SHAPING THE MINDS OF THE FUTURE

Canadian School Bahrain (CSB), located in Diyar Al Muharraq, is the first certified British Columbia (BC) offshore school in the Kingdom of Bahrain. BTM caught up with the school’s Director, Aisha Janahi, and Principal, Abby Saadeh, to find out how the latest addition to Bahrain’s education sector will be shaping the minds of the future. When did CSB start operations and which student age groups does it cater to? Ms. Abby: The Canadian School of Bahrain opened its doors in 2019 and is certified by the British Columbia Ministry of Education. CSB is also the first certified BC offshore school in the Kingdom offering a 21st-century curriculum with high academic standards. CSB offers a unique Ms. Abby Saadeh education program CSB Principal teaching the British Columbia, Canada curriculum integrated with Bahraini Social Studies, Islamic Studies and Arabic. internationally renowned education program of the highest standard which teaches students through fostering a lifelong love of learning. This outstanding program offers a balanced, concept, and inquiry-based approach that is student-centered and focuses on the whole child. Along with literacy and numeracy foundations, the curriculum emphasizes on building a set of core competencies. These are sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need to engage in deep, lifelong learning.

In addition, BC students at Canadian School Bahrain will receive a Personal Education Number (PEN) which follows the student through their BC education path from Early Learning to Grade 12. This number is used for multiple purposes including transition analysis between schools, post-secondary education, exams, and student reporting. Do the teachers have to undergo any special certification in order to teach the BC curriculum?

interview Ms. Abby: Yes, all teaching staff at Canadian School Bahrain are certified teachers and have to go through a strict accreditation process to be certified teachers. The English teachers have to be certified by the British Columbia, Canada Ministry of Education. How strong are the Arabic and Islamic Ms. Aisha Janahi subjects taught at CSB? CSB Director Ms. Aisha: At CSB we give great emphasis to Bahraini Social studies/ Citizenship, Islamic studies, and Arabic. All our Arabic teachers have to be qualified subject experts with a Bachelor in Education and have to be certified by Bahrain’s Ministry of Education. As the Director, with over 30 years of experience in education in Bahrain, I will be focusing on maintaining a perfect integration between the British Columbia (BC) Canada curriculum and Bahraini Social studies, Islamic studies, and Arabic language at the highest standards. How would you describe CSB’s “studentcentered approach”? Ms. Abby: The Philosophy of Canadian School Bahrain is to provide global education with a holistic approach, focusing on developing the child’s core competencies of communications, and creative and critical thinking while developing a positive personal and cultural identity. All of the decisions made at CSB reflect what is best for our students. The Student-centered approach acknowledges that not all students learn successfully at the same rate, in the same learning environment, and the same ways. At CSB personalized learning focuses on enhancing student engagement in learning and giving students choices — more of a say in what and how they learn — leading to lifelong, self-directed learning. Students and teachers develop learning plans to build on student’s interests, goals, and learning needs. Involving students in reflecting on their work and setting new goals based on their reflections allows them to take more control of their learning. Personalized learning also encompasses place-based learning, where learning experiences are adapted to the local environment or an individual context. What student assessment processes are employed at CSB? Ms. Abby: At the Canadian School, we consistently use both: formative and summative assessment processes within activities and assignments. Formative assessment means that we are consistently checking with students regularly during their learning processes to

www.bahrainthismonth.com

provide recommendations and also to adjust classroom-wide strategies. We use summative assessments to evaluate this learning at the end of an assignment or unit. We also use some standardized assessments to be sure our students are meeting British Columbia, Canada standards, and benchmarks. Now that the government has announced the possible reopening of schools, what kind of precautionary measures will be taken to ensure the health and safety of students and teachers? Ms. Aisha: As per the instructions of the Ministry of Education, we are gearing up for the new academic year and opening of the school during September. We are following all procedures and recommendations directed by WHO, UNICEF, and IFRC in addition to those by the Bahrain Ministry of Education. Our procedures for prevention of the Covid-19 virus are very stringent and, rest assured, our whole staff are on constant alert and have received training in best practices of dealing with the virus. Also, as per the WHO recommendations we have placed hand hygiene stations at entrances and exits, daily screening of body temperatures on entry into the building for all staff, students and visitors, regular cleaning, and sanitization of the complete school area in addition to the allocation of an isolation room. We have also rearranged all the furniture with increased desk spacing, social distancing stickers in hallways and classrooms, etc. At the same time, we will not have more than 10 students in each class, and the teaching methodology would be a mix of both classroom and virtual learning. We understand the concerns of parents and children, and our school staff are here to support any student or family member with all the practical support needed. Could you explain the registration process and admission criteria at CSB? Ms. Abby: The first step in the registration process is to fill out a CSB application form and fee which can be found by contacting us by

phone or on the school website. Once returned, our registration office will assign an assessment date and interview. Once the assessment has been completed, the registration office will contact parents of acceptance. For more information, visit www.canadianschoolbh.com. August 2020 13

YOURS SUSTAINABLY By Kai Miethig

Ecological awareness starts at school, then university and continues in to our professional lives. But the groundwork has to be done from the start; by building sustainable young minds!

H

ow do we create sustainable schools for our youth to prosper in an eco-friendly future? Environmental sustainability starts with awareness and knowledge gained throughout the course of life. The initial and most crucial awareness though, is created at the grass root level: in a sustainable school. Humans are, unfortunately, the creators of waste in the world at every level of consumption, be it through the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the modes of transport we use, and even when we are turning a blind-eye to the litter, we are silently partaking in its growth. The earlier we groom our kids to stop littering; we are grooming environmentally sustainable young minds that will carry forward the cultivated habit. Knowledge indeed is power and it is a powerful key to change. The future generations will have the biggest influence and impact on the world and schools play the greatest part in its education.

Five great things schools can do to bring about environmental awareness are: 1) 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) – beside these, there are other R’s including the sense of ‘Responsibility’ of each individual for his her own waste; ‘Respect’ towards mother nature; ‘Resist’ from unnecessary items and the oversupply of things; Take what you need for living and ‘Refuse’ what’s unnecessary; ‘Return’ what you do not need; ‘Repair’, don’t throw stuff away; ‘Reach’ out! Become a green leader or eco champion in your school or institution, inspire your classmates and teachers, your parents and friends; and of course, ‘Recycle’ by creating a collection point, learn about the various materials and start segregation of recyclable and compostable material. 2) Appointing green eco teams or green ambassadors are a great way to create awareness in school. Develop initiatives like a vegetable and herb garden with wild

flowers for the birds and bees; plant fruit trees as well as a composting area to create your own soil. 3) Start collecting recyclables everyday in school with the help of your peers. Create a segregation action and bring recyclables from home to avoid unnecessary transportation. 4) Conduct awareness workshops and environmental sessions about topics such as calculating your carbon footprint of your school and publish it daily to raise awareness. 5) BYOB – Bring Your Own Bottles to school; don’t buy plastic bottles or tetra packs in school for your drinks. Make the cafeteria a green cafe with no disposable waste or single-use items. BYOC – Bring Your Own Cutlery to avoid plastic cutlery. Be Active, Be Loud, Be Natural and start your green initiative today!

MY LIFE IN CARS

Dick Potter revisits the exquisite cars of the Bond movies in this trip down memory lane.

The Name’s Potter. Richard Potter. Yes, I do know you all know my name and, if you’re a Bond fan, you’ll also know that’s where that introduction stems from. James Bond films were positively a British Christmas television staple in my day. Over the last months - given the dearth of social activities available to us all - we have passed many enjoyable afternoons re-watching these classics. In terms of early era action and spy thrillers, Bond films may perhaps have been considered a tad implausible. However, the one aspect of the franchise that remains impressive to me, are of course, the cars. Whether they are in a car chase scene and kitted out with gadgets and weapons or are simply what Bond drove around in, cars, mostly classic ones, have gone hand in hand with Bond since the earliest instalments. Throughout the franchise, Bond has driven

www.bahrainthismonth.com

numerous cars, these included Aston Martin models: DB5, V8 Vantage, and DBS V12, the Lotus Espirit S1 and the BMW 750iL. Whilst technically not the first Bond car-Sean Connery drove a Sunbeam Alpine Series II in “Dr. No” (1962)-the Aston Martin DB5 is easily the most quintessential. Did you know that initially Aston Martin was reluctant to loan the Bond movies a development prototype? Thankfully wiser minds prevailed and thus, the classic partnership between Aston Martin and the Bond franchise began. DB are the initials of David Brown-yes, the tractor maker - this chap bought Aston Martin in the 1940s. He insisted that some of the products should bear his name as proof of his ownership, fair enough. The first car to bear Brown’s initials was the DB2 in 1950, although the 1948-50 2-Litre Sports model was retroactively named the DB1, despite not officially being a DB car. When I were a lad, I had an Aston Martin DB5- lamentably, it was a toy modelcomplete with a little blue man in the ejector seat (I were a very young lad then). Now that was a childhood toy, I do wish I’d hung on to. Although not the first in the DB series,

the Aston Martin DB5 which featured in “Goldfinger” (1964) and again in “Thunderball”, (1965) sold for £4,258 when it was made back in the day and last sold in an auction in 2010 to Jerry Lee- it fetched a tidy $4.6 million, wonder how much my toy would have made?! A different Aston Martin DB5 was used in “Golden Eye” (1995) in which the car is Bond’s personal vehicle and has no gadgets. However, it did come kitted out with a fax machine and a champagne cooler in the arm rest-as if you could even consider driving a car without those essentials! This car currently resides, not in my garage regrettably, but at the London Film Museum in Covent Garden, London. Meanwhile, Bond fans may be wondering which cars will appear in “No Time to Die?” According to “my sources”, this upcoming Bond film will feature a fleet of incredible 007 cars, including no less than four Aston Martins (one of which is a Valhalla supercar). Then there’s the Land Rover Defender 2020 which was supposedly seen on set during filming. Suffice to say, the new 007 flick won’t slouch in the slick car department. Meanwhile, I’m off to have a Martini, shaken, not shtirred… to paraphrase Christopher Lee in “The Man with The Golden Gun” (1974) “Come, come, readers, you enjoy a Bond ending as much as I do”! Happy motoring all. dickpotter@redhousemarketing.com August 2020 23

AGAINST ALL ODDS In the first six months of 2020, Porsche delivered a total of 116,964 cars to customers worldwide. The outbreak of Covid-19 and the resulting closures of Porsche centres over a period of several weeks resulted in a 12 per cent decline in new car deliveries compared to the same period last year. “We see positive tendencies, although we continued to feel the effects of the coronavirus crisis in the second quarter, especially in the US and Europe. A crucial factor here was the month of April, when almost all Porsche Centres in these markets were still closed,” said Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, Detlev von Platen. The Cayenne was the most popular model with a total of 39,245 units sold, followed by 34,430 Macan vehicles. With 16,919 deliveries representing an increase of two per cent, the iconic 911 sports car enjoyed great popularity. The Taycan likewise continues to be well received by customers: Porsche delivered 4,480 units in the first half of the year within the context of a staggered market launch.

motoring So, to start off, let’s look briefly at some history:

Back in 1974 Jeep launched a mid-size four-wheel drive truck called the Cherokee. It wasn’t too small and it didn’t take up space like full-size trucks either. It had proportions that were «just right» for many families who wanted something that could comfortably seat four, have a decent amount of luggage room and have some character left over when all was said and done. In many ways it was like a Chevrolet Caprice station wagon on stilts - all the space with added utility. The Cherokee was a runaway success and ushered in the era of the Sport Utility Vehicle as the cornerstone family car.

But the story doesn’t end there; once again in the 1970s, Chrysler began working on a «hot new concept for the urban family”. That concept was eventually launched in 1984 as the Plymouth Voyager. It was a front wheel drive van with sliding rear doors and a flat floor which meant tons of space, but it handled and drove like a sedan. The Voyager was a roaring success, and with other manufacturers such as Chevrolet’s Astro and Ford’s Aerostar, the age of the minivan as the quintessential suburban family car had arrived. This trend continued through the nineties and into the early oughts’ when SUVs began to take over in terms of popularity.

Now that you›ve got some context, here are some deciding factors that will ultimately determine whether you›re a minivan or an SUV family: 1. Budget: As with every big purchase decision, the budget plays a key deciding role. Considering the fact that the cheapest minivan in the Kingdom starts upwards of BHD 10,000, if your budget is on the south side of that number, there is a decent selection of small and mid-size SUVs available. 2. Space: Does your family already have five members? Do you have frequent road trips along with extended family and friends? A minivan may be your only plausible choice (at this point it›s either a minivan or a Suburban!). Since minivans have low floors, they allow extreme ease of access, and can seat eight adults in spacious comfort - as opposed to an SUV which can get claustrophobic during long trips or even when stuck in traffic.

3. Is it the only car: If you›re a one-car-one-family type of person, then picking the right car is crucial. In many ways, the raised ground clearance and (available) all-wheel-drive on many SUVs make it a great all-rounder by virtue of being easier to see out of, park, and even tackle some rough roads every now and then. 4. Resale value: Depending on the make and model, an SUV can be a relatively easy sell when it comes time to move on, whereas (in Bahrain at least) minivans are more of a niche vehicle. With that being said however, a well-kept minivan can command a decent premium in the used car market for the right buyer. 5. Cool factor: Let›s face it - some folks are all about the badge and the looks, while some need a car that will get the job done no questions asked. In this respect, there›s no beating the style and clout of some SUVs in the market. However, have you had a look at the Chrysler Pacifica lately?

The minivan and the SUV eventually killed off the large family estate or station wagon from main stream showrooms entirely. Interestingly, to this day, near every minivan comes with the front wheel drive, flat floor, sliding doors formula – so you have Chrysler to thank for that.

LET’S TAKE A BIGGER BITE AND LOOK AT THE PROS AND CONS OF EACH PLATFORM:

THE MINIVAN Pros:

Spaciousness: Front wheel drive layout means there’s no power transmission hardware under the floor, which equates to more space. Also, since minivans are lower to the ground, kids can climb in and out with ease and you can load stuff in the trunk without breaking your back. A flat floor also means that seating configurations can be changed (have you seen the Pacifica’s Stow-and-Go system?) Safety: Minivans are big – a far sight bigger than any mid-size SUV, and if you’ve ever been in a minivan, you’d know that passengers generally sit a few inches away from the bodywork. Performance: Minivans wouldn’t sell if they couldn’t get out of their own way when fully loaded with passengers, luggage and a tank full of fuel. Manufacturers know this all too well and overcompensate – often times ending with a minivan that’s comically fast.

28 August 2020

Tech: Even entry-level minivans are loaded with a decent amount of tech to keep you and the family entertained. Reverse cameras, parking sensors, navigation, Bluetooth, entertainment screens, blind spot monitoring and even radar cruise control are becoming standard fare on minivans. Comfort: Since minivans are built with a singular purpose – to be a family hauler full stop, manufacturers pay special attention to the way it rides and handles. If you like cushy suspension with that “floaty feeling”, a minivan can be hard to beat. Looks: Today’s minivans look cool inside and out - what our mid-nineties selves imagined cars would look like in the future.

Cons:

Starting prices: Minivans have a price point – generally in the range or above BHD 10,000, so the budget is certainly a priority.

Looks: Let’s face it – you either think a minivan is cool or you think it’s boring. There is no in-between. Me? I think minivans are the ultimate party cars. Great Second car: If you must have just one car in the household, a minivan may not always be the best choice – especially given variables such as parking spaces. Resale value: Depending on how fast you want to sell your car and how much emphasis you place on getting the most residuals, a minivan won’t score top marks here. That’s something you will have to live with. Variety: Honda, Toyota, Chrysler and Kia are the predominant players in the minivan segment, and between them, they some incredibly cool cars. But you have to admit, that’s a pretty narrow line-up.

www.bahrainthismonth.com

motoring

THE SUV Pros:

Looks: Not being constrained by certain model-parameters mean designers can go crazy with the looks, and todays SUVs are mighty good-looking. Ergonomics: That “raised seating position” is a deal-maker for most folks, as is the higher ground clearance that makes traversing rough roads or even hopping a kerb for parking a piece of cake. All-rounder: A properly equipped mid or full-size SUV can double as a decent daily-driver and still function as the grocery-getter and school bus with aplomb. Resale value: Depending on the make and model, SUVs are always an easy sell in the used car market. Getting fairly decent residuals and quick turnovers are common. Capability: SUVs can be had with all-wheel-drive or even proper four-wheeldrive. This turns it into a properly capable offroad machine and can even tow your boat. Fuel economy: With a variety of engine options available on the same platform (like the Dodge Durango for example), SUVs can work even when saving at the pump is one of your top car buying priorities. Variety: Goes without saying that there is a metric ton of SUVs on sale today. As a matter of fact, some manufacturers like Ford are dropping everything but SUVs from their line-up.

Cons:

Space: Whichever way you cut it; SUVs tend to have a space crunch – especially when packed

to capacity. The larger ones are fairly decent – but then again we’re talking about a behemoth the size of a Suburban. If max space is your primary concern, a minivan will meet those needs way before any mid-size SUV can. Performance: Unless you’re looking at an SUV with a V8 or a high-performance V6 under the hood, SUVs are – let’s be kind here – not too brisk. Generally taking a car-based platform and putting larger wheels, bodywork, weight and increasing the ride height while keeping the base powertrain does not do favors for power-to-weight ratio. Capability: Yes, capability – or the lack thereof – can be a negative as well. Unless equipped with expensive four-wheel-drive, an SUV is basically a sedan with raised suspension. It’s

about time people learned that. Raised suspension and bigger wheels have an adverse effect on handling, and fuel economy. Even the bigger non-crossover SUVs (the ones that are based on pickup truck platforms like the Tahoe and Yukon) do not come with standard fourwheel-drive. This, to me at least, makes no sense – a giant, lumbering truck with no added capability is not my cup of tea. I’d rather have a Crown Vic. Versatility: Without all or four-wheel-drive, a small or mid-size SUV simply isn’t more versatile than a minivan. Features: SUVs come in a wide variety of grades, and generally the entry-level trims don’t get you much in the way of toys or gadgets. It’s mostly about the “look” than substance.

So, there you have it – your opportunity to make an informed decision when it comes time to shop for that new family car. And if you’re wondering what yours truly would get however, the answer has always been quite simple - family planning and a Porsche 911.

GOOD FOR BUSINESS! Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Embassy have announced that the Kingdom and United States of America have reached an agreement to extend the validity of tourist visas, granted to citizens of both countries, from five to ten years. The American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham Bahrain) believes the agreement could be very good for business. “The 10-year visa promotes easier access for eligible citizens to travel between the two countries which is good for all business sectors as it will further support the use of the US-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as citizens travel to establish business opportunities,” said AmCham Bahrain President, Qays Zu’bi. Since the FTA was initiated, bilateral trade between

the U.S. and Bahrain has more than tripled from $782M in 2005 to $2.5B in 2019. “AmCham provides a platform that highlights information, introductions, and opportunities to encourage trade and help businesses use the FTA and the 10-year visa will support our effort,” stated Mr. Zu’bi. “Applying for a visa can be time consuming – the 10-year visa will save time, money and stress – which is beneficial for both business and tourism. Tourism and trade are vitally important to both economies and the new 10-year visa will certainly enhance both countries as preferred travel destinations,” he added. The new 10-year visa is available to Bahraini and US citizens only, and applies to B1/B2 visas, which are for business and tourism trips.

STAYING CONNECTED The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the Kingdom of Bahrain recently revealed that 99.7% of individuals in Bahrain use the internet according to results published in its latest Telecommunications Services Residential Market Survey report. In addition, Bahrain ranked 4th globally in relation to the percentage of individuals using internet, according to the latest Global Competitiveness Report published by World Economic Forum in October 2019. According to the survey results, 99.7% of respondents said they used the internet in the last three months - a clear indication of the increasing affordability of internet services in Bahrain. With regards to mobile services, almost all respondents said they have mobile phone service. However, the survey results show that the percentage of users having two or more mobile SIM cards has declined and reached 14% in 2019 compared

to 38% in 2017. “The high penetration rate of Internet services has supported the government’s efforts to activate education and work remotely, during the global crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. The availability of high speeds and large data capacity has helped support the implementation and use of the applications necessary to perform the tasks of education and work remotely,” said Acting General Director of TRA, Shaikh Nasser bin Mohamed Al Khalifa. Regarding telecommunications services users’ satisfaction, results showed that 85% of respondents expressed their satisfaction with telecommunications services in Bahrain. Moreover, users’ proposals for telecommunications service improvement were focused on lowering prices and increasing the quality of services.

MILLIONAIRE STATUS According to a report, titled ‘Global Wealth 2020: The Future of Wealth Management—A CEO Agenda,’ 68.8 percent of Bahrain’s wealth was held by millionaires in 2019, while the country’s millionaires are expected to grow by 1.1 percent annually over the coming years. The 20th annual study of global wealth management conducted by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has taken a 20-20 view of the industry, looking back over the past two decades as well as ahead to 2040, to provide a detailed retrospective on wealth growth over the past 20 years and evaluate the potential long-term impact of the COVID-19 crisis. “Despite the current economic decline and precarious

outlook globally for the coming years, estimates indicate Bahrain will still record sustainable growth across several areas within the wealth segment,” said BCG Managing Director and Partner, Mustafa Bosca. BCG findings suggest Bahrain represented 1.1 percent of the share of personal wealth pool in 2019 in the Middle East and Africa, having grown by 4.4 percent annually to USD 100 billion between 2014 and 2019. Equities and investment funds represented the country’s largest onshore asset class, accounting for 52.7 percent of total personal wealth in 2019, while life insurance and pensions are expected to grow the fastest at 5.7 percent through 2024

A NEW WAY OF SUSTAINABILITY Financial expert Pria Masson Tanwar talks of emerging trends due to the coronavirus crisis.

These days, regular media fills our screens and minds with the negative impact of the pandemic and how everything has a butterfly effect – rarely focusing on the positive changes. And yes, there are positive changes all around. One significantly positive impact that I see is that most businesses and economies, are not thinking of shutting down but instead of adapting. The disclaimer I make is that, there are indeed plenty of entrepreneurs and businesses which are shutting down, but my rationale is that in all probability these were likely on the fence of survival anyway and the pandemic simply pushed them over to one side.

is a familiar and simple math exercise of how much you spend versus how much you earn and adjust for any money people owe you, and money you owe people. Ideally, have a buffer in place, even in households. If not, aim to simply create that buffer out of small savings.

Contingency Planning – Having the Difficult Conversations

Managing Income and Expenses More Consciously

Focus on Savings and

focusing on 20% that contribute to 80% of income has governed decisions. This could change or alter since this will be more fluid and there could be more money in the middle ground – so volume-based businesses. These could be in technology as well. The idea is that business that bridge the gaps are the way forward – because the gaps are now clearer.

That being said, I see five key trends emerging from this crisis that are common across corporates and households: Continuity and Sustainability – Having the Difficult Conversations There is likely to be a greater focus on corporate governance, sustainability, and business continuity planning. While larger organisations have this in place, even smaller organisations, independent set-ups, and startups, are likely to invest more into these aspects. On individual levels, this means thinking through wills, planning for our children, more detail out financial obligations and receivables, make clear documents for bank accounts, etc. Have those difficult conversations. Never has the need for having system in place for the longer term been more pronounced – the probabilities and realities have all now been changed for the foreseeable future.

Focus on Savings and Prudence Prudence New Consumption Patterns That brings me to the third Finally, a change in what we trend I see; greater focus as consumers consume. This on savings. Over decades forced reset is likely to change Products that Bridge of consumerism, the the products we use, how we the Gap concept of spending what use them and how much we or more than you earn, is use them. It is going to sort of the norm. change the way we engage Companies sometimes tend with society, with travel, with to ignore long-term our work environments and New Ways of implications of adding to with our employees. “Business Consumption liabilities – they do this by as usual” and “new normal” are taking loans, having higher small phrases for a change in levels of current liabilities. mindsets of individuals and Households do the same the companies that they by using credit cards and engage with. taking personal loans. However, this pause That is the thing about large events, they button us likely to make more people and bring about a new order, they force hard companies focus on the need to be more decisions, and the resilient, know they must prudent. To spend what is “disposable” not find a way to survive. That is what I mean – I necessarily what is “available” – easy loans, am seeing that businesses and people are credit facilities etc are easily available but not mostly looking forward. For now, planning and disposable since they have obligations linked trying to utilize this time to re-invent, adapt to them. Now is the time to understand and and hopefully find a stronger foundation, is internalise this mindset. the only road to survival.

Financial Planning For ‘Working Capital’ or ‘Regular Obligations’ Across the board we are likely to see more prudent contingency planning in a financial sense. Managing working capital effectively and keeping a basic buffer is now a clear necessity that cannot be compromised on. This

Businesses and Products that “bridge the gap” More businesses that focus on bridging the increasing social and economic divide. Simple things like online education, work from home etc. will widen the chasm because of access in a real sense and the actual support systems available. For years, the pareto principle of

GOING TO

JARADA ISLAND A BOAT TRIP EXTRAORDINAIRE

By Bill Grieve

“If you do only one sea boating trip this Summer - do this one!”

A fantastic recreational boat trip out to a small island in the Arabian Gulf in absolute Five Star luxury. Surrounded by water, Bahrain, offers many sea and beach attractions – though one of the most impressive outings available must be a trip to Jarada Island with the Ritz Carlton Hotel’s elite Pearl 1 “Wave breaker”, manufactured locally by Al Dhaen Marine.

On our arrival at the Royal Beach Club, we found that all necessary arrangements had been made and we were looked after from beginning to end. A simple waiver is required from each passenger and all are required to bring a CPR or Passport with them for security reasons. The lunch on offer consisted of a generous selection of appetizing menus including - “Middle East”; “French” or our chosen “International” - Guacamole-Tomato SalsaTortilla Chips; a selection of fresh sandwiches, crudités; cucumber-carrotslettuce-tomato, celery and nuts accompanied by an assortment of cookies. All options were prepared to the highest 36 August 2020

standards as one would expect of our gracious hosts. The Captain and his assistant were well rehearsed and practiced in providing us with a jovial greeting and a beaming smile as they welcomed us on board. After a brief introduction and life jackets distribution, off we went. Our journey took us through Bahrain Bay and the sight-seeing is incredible - Bahrain’s most prestigious buildings stand like sentinels providing guests with a scenic sensation in this extraordinary adventure.

The Ritz Carlton Hotel in Bahrain does nothing by half measures and the trip to Jarada Island illustrates this perfectly. The arrangements were exact and from the time the first enquiry was made to our final farewell - everything went perfectly.

Arabian Gulf, having stopped briefly at a floating checkpoint as we left Bahrain, it was reminiscent of being chauffeured about in a luxury vehicle The warm fresh salty sea air, sunshine and aquamarine waters tantalized almost every sense. As the Pearl 1 planed across the flat, calm sea towards Qatar, the gentle sway of the changing tides and the purring of the vessel’s Yamaha motors combined to offer an enchanted experience on the high seas – culminating in our arrival at Jarada Island after only an hour. On our arrival. the island was partially exposed and with the tide going out, the sandy outcrop quickly expanded. Boats and jet-skis buzzed around the beach like bees; waiting to perch on a pollen filled flower. The crew set anchors and erected umbrellas, tables, folding chairs and even a fully stocked portable fridge. Music was also provided as a welcome accompaniment resulting in an almost holiday atmosphere surrounded by swimming, sunbathing and serenity around the boat. As we enjoyed the soft, washed light sand, the visitors were in absolute harmony with nature and in awe of the raw beauty of Jarada Island. To the side, one of our group’s members did Yoga on the soft sand with the waves gently lapping against her forearms, while the rest of us sat and ate a delectable lunch listening to the music and soaking in the sunshine amidst the ambience of an absolutely unforgettable setting that any guest would never want to end… Time flew by and it was soon time to head back - the crew fired up the motors, lifted anchor and we circled Jarada Island before heading back to the Ritz Carlton Hotel; waving farewell to our fellow guests visiting the island as exclusive visitors to this incredible natural phenomenon. The return trip was an absolute dream with all of us mesmerized by the passing sea spray, warm air rushing past our arms and faces and the knowledge that we were in safe hands and enjoying the ultimate comfort. The return journey took us slowly past a wide variety of photographic opportunities and some of the best panoramic views available of Manama and the Seef district from the sea. This was truly an amazing trip and provided an exceptional experience and value for money. There is no better way to visit Jarada Island, than with the leading brand in hospitality and entertainment–i.e. The Ritz Carlton, Bahrain. Jarada Island History

Qit’at Jaradah is a cay in the Arabian Gulf to the east of Bahrain Island, located 32 km (20 mi) east of Manama, the capital of Bahrain approximately midway between Bahrain and Qatar, within the 12-mile (19 km) territorial waters of both countries. It was one of several maritime features contributing to a long running dispute between Bahrain and Qatar. While historically Qit’at Jaradah has not been considered an island, Bahrain claimed in 2000 that it measured approximately 12 by 4 meters (39 ft × 13 ft) at high tide with an elevation of approximately 0.4 meters (1 ft 4 in), and 600 by 75 meters (1,969 ft × 246 ft) at low tide. The opposing view is that it is a low-tide elevation. The feature is uninhabited and without vegetation. (Courtesy Wikipedia)

THE LAST OF US

Part II

VERDICT:

A gripping, visceral experience

WHAT IS IT?

RATING:

The Last of Us Part II is an actionadventure game developed by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 4. Set five years after The Last of Us, players control two characters in a post-apocalyptic United States: Ellie, who sets out for revenge, and Abby, a soldier who becomes involved in a conflict between a militia and a cult. The game is played from the third-person perspective.

F1 2020

GAMEPLAY

Players can use firearms, improvised weapons and stealth to defend against enemies and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. Ellie’s ability to jump, go prone, dodge and even run away from combat not only takes advantage of large battlefields, but also enables improvisation within them, pushing you to adapt to any situation or meet a quick death.

GRAPHICS

The artfully detailed and realised locations tell layers of story, from the macro-destruction of a city district down to the posters and calendars hung on abandoned apartment walls. Naughty Dog has taken the gloom of grey clouds and grey buildings and crafted something ominous, beautiful and haunting. Lush vegetation grows over dilapidated storefronts and homes in the suburbs while the smashed, looming skyscrapers of the city form new, mesmerising stone monuments. 40 August 2020

You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting – the way of the Ghost – as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.

For the first time, players can create their own F1 team by creating a driver, then choosing a sponsor, an engine supplier, hiring a teammate and competing as the 11th team on the grid. Build facilities, develop the team over time and drive to the top. The addition of split-screen racing, a new steering assist and a more accessible race experience means that you can enjoy the game with friends, no matter what your skill level.

APPS REVIEW BTM BRINGS YOU THE LOW-DOWN ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST APPS NOW AVAILABLE!

APP: ACTURE

APP: LOCKSCREEN WIDGETS

Acture is a digital wellbeing app for reducing screen time. You simply turn on the app when you want to focus on things other than your phone. Every time you pick up your phone during that period, the phone asks you why you want to use it and you have to tell it. Later, you can review your responses to see why you keep using the device. It’s a bit of a self-accountability method as you can criticise your decisions later on.

Lockscreen Widgets brings back an old feature. It’s a lock screen replacement app that lets you put widgets on your lock screen, with one widget per page. You can then re-order pages as you see fit and tap the widget with three fingers to hide it. It’s a nostalgic throwback in an age where many skip the lock screen with biometrics.

APP: ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CAMERA

APP: WAVELET

Adobe Photoshop Camera is Adobe’s newest app, made to be used in conjunction with Instagram. It’s a camera app with a bunch of filters like most camera apps these days. Photoshop Camera does let you see real-time effects before you shoot the picture and it can do some extra stuff like auto-tone, a bokeh-style portrait mode, and more.

Wavelet is an equaliser app unlike any other. It does a lot of the basic stuff and includes various presets, a nine band equaliser, a bass booster, a reverb preset and even a virtualiser. The app’s claim to fame is its 2,400 pre-calculated presets on a headphone-by-headphone basis. You can tell the app to adjust the sound based on a specific model of headphones and it tries to get everything on target as much as possible.

music

Kansas

The Absence of Presence While the music on The Absence of Presence is generally similar to what Kansas has always been – complex instrumentation, an impressively full sound, strong harmonies and grandiose themes – it lacks the classic arenarock hooks that make the best songs on its 1970s albums Point of Know Return and Leftoverture staples on classic rock radio to this day. In 2020, even if the new material was immediately accessible to the masses, it’s getting harder to find outlets where such new music is played, beyond pre-programmed FM radio and the occasional cut on hard rock channels. So at this late date, Kansas’ faithful audience should welcome The Absence of Presence as a work in which, even if the radio-friendly hooks are largely absent, a solid, well-crafted prog-rock framework grounds the album and should largely please those loyalists.

Christian Sands Be Water Verdict:

An eloquent, evocative album.

What’s the story? Drawing inspiration from his love of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, pianist Christian Sands offers his flowing, harmonically textured sixth album, Be Water. The album follows the similarly nuanced 2018 effort Facing Dragons and finds Sands continuing to develop his sophisticated brand of contemporary post-bop jazz. The album’s title is a reference to a portion of Lee’s dialogue from his 1971 breakthrough appearance on the TV drama Longstreet and which he paraphrased that same year in an interview with Canadian journalist Pierre Berton while discussing his career and philosophy.

Worth a listen? The album features songs that balance compositional lyricism, empathetic group interplay and searching improvisation. Helping him achieve this balance are his long-time associates, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, guitarist Marvin Sewell and drummer Clarence Penn. Together, they craft impressionistic tracks like Sonar, Crash, and Stream, building upon Sands’ inventive grooves and repeated harmonic devices. Also joining in are saxophonist Marcus Strickland, trumpeter Sean Jones and trombonist Steve Davis, who each take deeply soulful solo turns. Indeed, Be Water’s relaxed intensity alone might call Bruce Lee to mind, mirroring his storied intellect and controlled physicality.

www.bahrainthismonth.com

Flower of Devotion Dehd’s minimal and sometimes surfy garage pop blooms into something more distinctive on this set of vulnerable and aching songs, with each of the three band members revealing more of themselves in sweet but melancholic tones. Third album Flower of Devotion continues exploring the sunset-coloured moods, but heightened production and experimentation with performance push the album into even sharper expressions of longing and languor. In addition to more adventurous guitar leads and a more defined sound across the board, songs like Loner and Drip Drop incorporate layers of synths and accentuate drummer Eric McGrady’s steadfast, minimal rhythms with electronic drum machine samples.

The Chicks

Gaslighter Gaslighter may be dressed in digital flair – its title track gleams in its precise polish – but the album bears the scars of middle age along with the defiance that comes with surviving those initial wounds. Although many of The Chicks’ songs appear to be inspired by a sour separation, there’s a clean, cold edge to the words. Gaslighter hums along with this sense of momentum: these are songs about leaving (but not forgetting) the past for a future that’s complicated yet filled with potential. Given this gravity, perhaps it’s appropriate that much of the album moves a little slower than a pop album should. August 2020 43

S E I V MO

YO U S M L I F T S E THE 10 BLY HAVEN’TnSy ESoEkNov By Dan P R O BA B

BE KIND REWIND (2008) Comedy

Dir: Michel Gondry Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover

------------------------------------

A quirky love letter to all the great classic films, penned in the unmistakable style of Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), one of the most unique voices on the indie scene. Jack Black and Mos Def play two video store clerks who inadvertently erase every tape in their catalogue. However, with demanding and undeterred customers, they are obligated to personally recreate said films with their own camera, on a budget of zero dollars. The results bring together a community’s love of film to a heart-warming culmination, and cements the two bumbling leads with a whole cinematic legacy of their own.

THE FISHER KING (1991) Drama / Fantasy / Adventure Dir: Terry Gilliam Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Amanda Plummer

------------------------------------

Judging by filmography alone, none hold a candle to the whimsy and craft of Terry Gilliam (Monty Python, Brazil, Time Bandits, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), however his true standout work just happens to be his most minimal. A parable of the eponymous legend, we are taken on a journey of the rise and fall of Jeff Bridges’ foul mouthed DJ persona Jack, and his redemption via his unexpected friendship with Robin Williams’ deranged but loveable Parry, with their vastly opposite destinies intertwined by a trick of fate. The scene alone, where Parry sees the love of his life at the train station, has to be one of the most beautiful and magical sequences ever put to screen.

KISS KISS BANG BANG (2005)

Comedy / Action / Crime

HUGO (2011)

Drama / Fantasy / Biography

Dir: Martin Scorsese Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Lee

------------------------------------

Stepping out of his usual thematic comfort zone, Martin Scorsese delivers a simply magical voyage in telling the story of a young orphan boy, living in a Paris train station in 1931. Discovering an old automaton belonging to his late father, the secrets unlocked along the way lead to answers beyond expectation and imagination, as fantasy gives way to the birth of the first sci-fi films ever created by the fabled pioneer Georges Melies. From Paris to the Moon, and every beautiful thing in-between, this film is now rightfully included in the list of “1001 Films to Watch Before You Die”. 44 August 2020

Dir: Shane Black Robert Downey Jr, Val Kilmer, Michelle Monaghan

---------------------------------

For fans of Guy Ritchie and the Coen Brothers, Shane Black’s (Iron Man 3) debut film serves as much more than a cheap imitation. A darkly comic crime thriller set in the underbelly of Hollywood, bringing together a private eye (Kilmer), a struggling actress (Monaghan) and a master con-man masquerading as an actor (Downey), tying them all into an absurd conspiracy that will tickle even the guiltiest of funny bones. Eclectic dialogue, eccentric circumstances and an unexpected climax make this underrated gem a definitive staple for the genre.

SPHERE (1998)

REIGN OF FIRE (2002)

Dir: Barry Levinson Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Jackson

Dir: Rob Bowman Christian Bale, Gerard Butler, Matthew McConaughey

Horror / Thriller / Sci-Fi

--------------------------------

When it comes to sci-fi horror, we can all name the Alien Franchise and Event Horizon without even blinking, however very few will even remember this under-the-sonar classic by the great Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Good Morning Vietnam). A team of scientists investigates the discovery of an unidentified object at the bottom of the ocean, inside of which they find a perfect metallic sphere. What follows is a series of events literally akin to a nightmare, with mind-boggling and bizarre consequences for the entire crew.

SLIPSTREAM (2007) Drama / Fantasy / Comedy Dir: Anthony Hopkins Anthony Hopkins, Christian Slater, John Turturro

-----------------------------------

Written, directed by and starring cinema legend Anthony Hopkins – this surreal, self-reflexive ode to filmmaking takes the viewer on a trip into the mind of a celebrated screenwriter’s descent into a world where reality is stranger than fiction. With the stellar casting additions of Jeffrey Tambor, Stella Hopkins, Christopher Lawford and the late Michael Clarke Duncan, as well as the hypnotic visuals and deep philosophical exchanges of dialogue, the only word eloquent enough to describe this masterpiece is “sublime”.

A BRONX TALE (1993) Crime / Drama

Dir: Robert De Niro Robert De Niro, Chaz Palminteri, Lillo Brancato

------------------------------------

After his inimitable performances in The Godfather, Raging Bull, King of Comedy and Goodfellas, and following in the footsteps of the acclaimed directors of said films Robert De Niro helms his own endeavor in highlighting aspects of Italian American culture. A very down-to-earth, true-to-life tale of a father’s struggle with his son befriending the local head Mafioso, and the consequences the relationship reaps on both the family and community as a whole. A slow-burner with incredible emotional pay-off, and undoubtedly a great a directorial debut. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Fantasy / Action / Adventure

------------------------------------

Before the dragon craze of Game of Thrones came this genius work of postapocalyptic proportions. With CGI that has genuinely stood the test of time and a no-nonsense approach to the pure devastation that such creatures may reap on our world – it’s frankly shocking how far this film has fallen under the radar. An early career defining performance by a practically unrecognizable Matthew McConaughey, coupled with a hyper-realistic, scientific approach to the storytelling makes this a perfect escapist gem for fantasy and sci-fi aficionados.

DAVE MADE A MAZE (2017) Comedy / Adventure / Fantasy Dir: Bill Waterson Nick Thune, Adam Busch, Meera Rokhit Kumbhani

------------------------------------

In a cinematic environment where it’s all about the special effects and epic storylines, nothing was more refreshing than coming back to the basics with this indie sleeper. Filmed on a minimal budget within a self-contained cardboard setting, with brilliant characters and offbeat humour – this allegory of anxiety and self-discovery is as heart-felt as they come, with many an artistic mind surely able to relate.

IP MAN 2 (2010)

Biography / Drama / Martial Arts Dir: Wilson Yip Donnie Yen, Xiaoming Huan, Darren Shahlavi

------------------------------------

For lovers of classic martial arts films, none serves as a greater tribute than this absolute masterwork of storytelling and fight choreography. Donnie Yen portrays the eponymous Ip Man (Bruce Lee’s trainer and mentor) during his years in Hong Kong in the late 1940s, attempting to set up a school propagating the discipline of Wing Chun. From facing off against the council of masters, to entering the ring against a champion boxer (Darren Shahlavi), as well as the renowned market fight sequence – there is more than enough action to truly appreciate the physical and mental limits of a true master.

ALBANIA

A Pleasant Surprise! BTM’s very own Farah Baig recently explored Albania on a ten-day trip during which she visited 5 different districts. Here’s what she had to say: If you’ve been hoping for a travel experience that’s pleasantly surprising, you might want to consider paying a visit to the beautiful country of Albania. It’s one of those seldom-visited places which boasts a rich history, great hospitality and scenic landscapes. The best part is the country is yet to face the brunt of being labeled a ‘tourist destination’, hence providing you with the pleasure of being in a quiet location for self-reflection, relaxation and true happiness. I had picked Albania for three main reasons - affordability, untouched nature and its rich history.

Tirana Tirana is nestled within a few hills and has numerous cozy hotels, eateries and cafes dotted across the city. Be sure to take a stroll through the city’s Skanderbeg Square to take in the beauty of the colourful buildings. One of the most interesting historical remnants in Albania is the hundreds of bunkers scattered across the country. In Tirana you will find that one of these former Cold War bunkers (Bunk Art 2) is now an underground contemporary art & history museum. You can also discover their surveillance museum, known as the ‘House of Leaves’, which provides you with an interesting insight of the surveillance that the citizens underwent. While in the capital, don’t forget to steep yourself in one of the aspects of Albania’s culture - their ability to enjoy a hot cup of coffee just about any time of the day.

Saranda Make peace with the fact that the best way to get around in Albania is on one of their many buses. The schedule on which they run is not an exact science, but with sprawling greenery and winding roads, you’re bound to enjoy the ride regardless. On your journey to Saranda, it’s advisable that you consider taking the route past Gjirokaster to have a glimpse of Albania’s inland districts. After a 6-hour bus ride from Tirana, you’ll find yourself in the absolutely breathtaking seaside district of Saranda. The beautiful town boasts stunning views of the Ionian Sea and the Greek island of Corfu. In addition, just a short drive away, you’ll find the natural wonder known as the Blue Eye- a stunning natural spring with a bright kaleidoscope of colours. If you enjoy your fair share of hiking, you can also visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Butrint which combines archaeology, historic monuments and nature in the Mediterranean. Last but not least, a trip to Saranda Castle is an absolute must-see if you’d like to enjoy one of the most scenic sunsets of your life. Follow this up with a walk by the promenade and dinner at one of the seaside restaurants and Saranda will be the highlight of your trip. 48 August 2020

travel Word of advice: rent a car and enjoy the scenic drive from Tirana to Kruja. This trip will take you up and down hills, through busy streets and eventually to the quaint district of Kruja. After a lovely traditional lunch at a restaurant on the side of a mountain, I made my way up the hill to the castle of Kruje which offers you stunning views of the district and a refreshing glimpse into Albania’s rich history. On your way out, be sure to visit the cobble-stoned bazaar to get some traditional crafts and souvenirs.

Kruja

Vlore Your journey to Vlore from Saranda will take you across several kilometers of the country’s stunning shoreline which is absolutely indescribable. I stayed at the extremely unique Hotel Liro, which is built into the side of a cliff and requires you to take an elevator down into the hotel. It is the most unique property you can stay in where your room is practically a few feet away from the sea and provides you with a stunning view of point where Albania’s two seas - Adriatic and Ionian - merge. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, you can even take a short walk down a staircase and swim in the sea too. When visiting Vlore, be sure to take a stroll through their beautiful corniche and city’s bustling market.

Korce This quaint town in the middle of the mountains is the epitome of a breath of fresh air, and is the perfect spot to get away and just recharge your batteries. You can do plenty in Korce in just two days. Some of the best things you’re bound to enjoy is a visit to the old bazaar, dining at one of its many unique restaurants, discovering the iconic Resurrection Cathedral and delving into the world of the Museum of Medieval art.

PRISTINE WHITE If there’s one thing that the runways of SS2020 proved, it’s that going back to basics doesn’t mean you’ll look basic. Nothing exudes elegance like pristine white designs in stunning silhouettes such as the eye-catching asymmetrical blouse from Lanvin. Fluidity and movement were presented so beautifully on the runways of Loewe and Kristina Fidelskaya, while Kate Spade and INGIE meant business with their sleek looks.

If you’re looking for a floor-length dress, you could draw inspiration from Versace or Temperley London depending on the look you’re going for.

IN SYNC WITH MOTHER NATURE

he last time we caught up, you were one of only women two marine biologists in the Kingdom. What’s changed since and what are some of the greatest progressions you’ve made since then? Not much really, I haven’t come across any other women marine biologists especially those who work on the field in Bahrain. On a more positive note, the number of young people coming into the environmental field is definitely growing as I have had a lot of youth doing degrees in environmentalrelated fields reach out to me looking for internships or ways to get into the field which is very positive and exciting! In addition, the number of women divers in Bahrain has increased significantly with diving becoming the latest trendy sport especially for young people. What drove you to pursue a career as an ecologist? With the shores of Bahrain as my playground during my childhood it was hard not to fall in love with the sea. I always knew I wanted to work with nature and learning how everything within an ecosystem connects fascinated me. Ecology is the relationship and interaction among species and with their surrounding environment. However, the real fuel that made me be very committed to pursuing this career is learning and seeing how we as humans are destroying and altering this relationship, which in the end will lead to our own self-destruction. How does having a career in the field of marine biology make you feel? Is this something you’ve always wanted to do?

www.womanthismonth.com

T

It’s no secret that the environment has been gravely affected by the collective actions of the world population over the years. As one of only two female marine biologists in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Reem Al Mealla works tirelessly for the betterment of the environment. We caught up with the inspiring woman to get some insight on the current state of the environment in the Middle East, the environmental effects of COVID-19 and her search for women in the environmental field in the Arabian Gulf.

I love being a marine biologist and have always wanted to be one since I was in school although very early on I wanted to be an astronaut. It was either going up beyond the blue or dive deep into the blue that surrounds us. Being in this field makes me feel alive and it gives me a deep sense of purpose. Working on the field excites me and constantly charges my energy giving me that drive to do better. I learn so much about life just by observing other species. We often forget that we are part of nature and not something detached. It is such a gift to be able to experience this life and hence we must do our best to live it fully whilst respecting every other species that we share this world with. When I was younger I always felt like I needed to do so much and would get upset when things don’t go my way but now I adopt nature’s philosophy where I can, like Lao Tzu says, “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” August 2020

PEOPLE | interview

What would you say is the most memorable experience you have had as a biodiversity environmentalist to date? One of the most memorable experiences was being able to be in Paris with climate activists throughout the negotiation period of the Paris Agreement, which was being adopted in 2015. I was surrounded by so many passionate and inspiring women environmentalists who were working hard to ensure that women and gender was included in the climate text, with references to the need for clean energies and ecological justice. Seeing their passion and hard work to co-create a world that is safe and healthy for future generations made me feel so grateful and privileged to be part of this community of women climate & environmental activists. I am deeply grateful to the Women for Environment & Development Organization (WEDO) for such an opportunity. You recently put out a call for women working in the environmental field in the

56

August 2020

Arabian Gulf. What do you hope to achieve through this? Yes, I’ve recently put up a call for women working within the environmental field in an effort to establish a network to connect women in the Arabian Gulf. The environmental field in general is vast and very interconnected in a complex manner. The network makes it easier to identify who is available, with which kind of expertise and in which country. The response has been overwhelmingly positive with many women reaching out to me to express their excitement regarding this idea as it provides them with a circle of support. The network brings together women across all environmental fields ranging from renewable energy to ecology; scientists to activists; educators to policy experts. This network offers women in the field to collaborate, seek help, exchange expertise, ideas and support each other’s projects. This in itself can easily provide all sectors whether the public, private or non-governmental with

the expertise or people needed within the region that have the expertise to make that necessary change. Women in this region ARE here, making a difference and this has to be known so that they are given the space and opportunity to grow. What are your thoughts on the current state of the environment (or specifically marine environment) in the Middle East? We are not in a great place, the Gulf countries are amongst the highest in the world in terms of carbon emissions per capita and as we all know high emissions contribute towards accelerating climate change. In addition, in terms of air quality, the Arab region was among the worst performers based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) since several Arab cities recorded levels of air pollution exceeding 5-10 times the WHO limits. It comes to no surprise then that several cities are among the 20 most polluted cities in the world. www.womanthismonth.com

PEOPLE | interview Based on a study conducted by the Global Burden of Disease, in the GCC, ambient air pollution was responsible for 13,000 premature deaths in 2017. Our marine environment isn’t doing great either, issues ranging between the decline in fish stocks to an extent that in some areas the fish stock has collapsed threatening local food security and the destruction of various habitats such as seagrass beds and other coastal habitats mainly due to reclamation and dredging activities. Habitats such as seagrass beds and mangroves serve as nurseries for various fish and marine species so their destruction makes it very difficult for species to recover. Land use change and the expansion of urbanization has resulted in green and agricultural spaces to diminish especially in Bahrain where the green belt is now less than 1% of the country’s area. What are your thoughts on the current pandemic and its positive or negative effects on the environment? First off, I think the world isn’t acknowledging and is ignoring the fact that the main reason behind this pandemic is due to environmental destruction. This is caused by urbanization, rapid expansion of cities, industrialized agriculture and more have resulted in habitat destruction and biodiversity loss. World governments are addressing the symptoms of the coronavirus pandemic but not the root causes that are influenced by human activity, which has laid the foundation for previous, current, and future pandemics. There was a new report that has recently been

www.womanthismonth.com

published by the United Nations Environment Programme that discusses this and how we can break the chain of transmission through rebalancing the needs of the people and the environment so that we can thrive together and fulfill each other’s needs. The pandemic has not only taken many lives and shut down the planet for a few months but it has also severely impacted world economies with many people losing their jobs. The waste being created due to the pandemic especially the use of disposables has increased the pressure on the already catastrophic waste crisis.

As a woman in science, what is your advice for young women hoping to pursue or make an impact in the field? The world and field is so big, there is definitely a place for you, the world needs you, your energy and all that you can do – so go do it! If you get rejected from something – remember it is merely a re-direction to where you need to be in life. So just ride that wave, life will surprise you in the best possible way!

On a more positive note, the pandemic has contributed towards lower emissions from industries and transport giving the environment a breather, which has allowed biodiversity to flourish in many areas of the world. This in itself has really put things into perspective - we should not go back to normal, instead we should attempt to create a future where we put the environment in the centre of our life. The cost of preventing further pandemics over the next decade by protecting wildlife and forests is estimated to equate to just 2% of the estimated financial damage caused by Covid-19. The question is, will we listen or ignore the signs and science again?

CHIC FISHTAIL BRAIDS

The fishtail braid is effortlessly chic and only really needs some good muscle memory and a reliable hair-tie. Explaining this would be a bit confusing, so you’re best off watching one of the several YouTube braid tutorials like we did.

6 Easy Heat-free Hairstyles

Stepping out of your house with gorgeous, styled hair can be quite the challenge, especially if you’re in a rush! To add to the mess, we have to pull, curl, blow dry, straighten or put our hair through some other heat-based styling. The fact of the matter is this – heat styling might get results, but not without doing considerable damage first. So, the WTM team put a few heat-free styles to the test to find out what has us looking our best without the sizzle.

WONDERFUL WAVY HAIR

Summer is here, so what better way to have some fun in the sun than with luscious wavy hair? To get the ultimate surfer girl hair, without the damage caused by curling irons, start by shampooing and conditioning your hair before letting it air dry until it is just slightly damp. Use a comb to remove any tangles then rub in a hair-texturising product or leave-in conditioner. Next, twist your hair and put it up in a messy bun. Once your hair is completely dry, take down your hair and gently separate the segments with your fingers. If you would like more defined waves, divide your hair into multiple, smaller buns.

RAVISHING RETRO HAIR

Few things are better than vintage hair, and the good news is you don’t need to char your locks to get it. Starting off with damp hair, wrap sections of it onto medium foam rollers, securing them at the side of your face. Allow your hair to dry for a couple of hours, then carefully remove the rollers. Once again, remember not to brush your hair, but gently style it where necessary with a fine-tooth comb

TASTEFUL TWIST BUNS

This one is ideal if you have long hair. Twist two small sections of your hair along the side of your face before pinning them at the back of your neck. Now twist your hair up and twirl it into a bun. Secure it in place with bobby pins and you’ve got a great effortless look.

Next, section off your hair and using a fine-tooth comb tease sections of your hair and carefully pint them at the crown of your head overlapping each other. Remember not to tease the sections of your hair which frame your face.

DAMAGE CONTROL 4 DIY Hair Repairing Masks

Styling your hair on the regular comes at a price. If your tresses have faced the brunt of it and are now damaged, try these DIY hair masks to restore them to its former glory. The rule of them is to mash all the ingredients together and leave them on for at least 3 or 4 hours before rinsing your hair.

HAIR-REPAIRING BANANA MASK Blend together two over-ripe bananas, a tablespoon each of coconut and olive oil, and two tablespoons of honey.

CONDITIONING AVOCADO MASK

SULTRY SPIRAL CURLS

You don’t need a curling iron to rock spiral curls; all you need is a styling product and every bobby pin you can get your hands on! Take small sections of your wet hair and carefully roll them on your finger before pinning them in place against your scalp. You could cover your hair with the spirals and leave them overnight with a shower cap on to hold them in place. The next morning, unpin your hair, but do not brush it. This look takes patience and precision but the curls are guaranteed to last all day.

Mash together one ripe avocado, half a glass of milk and a tablespoon of olive oil.

MOISTURISING EGG MASK Beat together three large eggs and three tablespoons of olive oil. Remember to gently wash this mask out with cold water.

SHINE-RESTORING STRAWBERRY MASK Blend together a bowl full of strawberries, two tablespoons of honey and a tablespoon of olive oil.

If you have longer hair, remember to adjust the quantities as required. www.womanthismonth.com

Meatless Mondays Explained we’re on a constant quest to improve our health and wellbeing, sometimes finding ourselves giving up whole groups of food all together. for a lot of people, however, it might seem like too much of a challenge to go completely vegetarian. if you’d like to ease your way into a vegetarian diet or probably just cleanse your system once a week, an easy way to start might be meatless mondays!

What are Meatless Mondays?

Meatless Mondays is a non-profit health initiative, launched in 2003, which encourages people around the world to go meatless once a week. The movement aims to improve people’s health and that of the planet too by reducing our carbon footprint. WHY GO MEATLESS? Going meatless once a week is said to have several positive effects on various ailments, apart from the added benefit of saving the environment by saving resources. PREVENT HEART DISEASE AND STROKE Vegetarians are 36% less likely than meat eaters to suffer from metabolic syndrome – excess belly fat and high blood triglycerides that increase your risk for heart problems. A study indicated that each daily serving of fruits or vegetables was associated with a 4% decline in coronary heart disease and a 5% lower risk of stroke. LIMIT CANCER RISK Consuming more antioxidant-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables results in lower cancer rates. If you also target organically grown produce, you’re likely to decrease your exposure to carcinogenic pesticides too. FIGHT DIABETES Research suggests that plant-based diets, especially those that are low in processed meats can reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. It can also decrease your total calorie consumption, which helps you obtain and maintain a healthy weight, a key component to preventing and treating the not-so-sweet disease. REDUCE STRESS A recent study stated that people who adopted a vegetarian diet reduced their stress levels by 39% after just 2 weeks on their new diet. The mood boost is attributed to plant compounds that fight oxidative stress in your body. BATTLES OBESITY People on plant-based, vegetarian diets tend to have a significantly lower Body Mass Index (BMI). This may be in part because plant-based diets are rich in fiber which contribute to fullness, resulting in lower calorie intake and less overeating.

Motivate yourself through research Sure, we’ve given you plenty of reason to get started, but nothing helps like a bit of your own research. To keep your motivation up for Meatless Mondays, look into the harmful aspects of regular consumption of meat. In addition, you could read up on some of the many benefits of going meat-free for a day – the list is endless! Cook up a storm For your Meatless Mondays, get excited and don’t just cook a dish you normally would, but without meat. If you do it this way, you’re more likely to get bored, revert to your old ways and miss the meat. Instead, buy a few vegetarian or vegan cookbooks or scour the internet and keep it interesting Plan ahead and get your groceries Choose what you’d like to eat ahead of time,

then do your grocery shopping. This way, your fridge will be stocked with lots of fresh fruits, veggies and perhaps interesting ingredients like tofu, Quorn and more, so it will be easier for you to stick with the meatless diet. Get creative! Pack your lunch the night before It can be stressful packing your lunch on a weekday, so pack it the night before. If you’re putting a salad together, make sure you don’t throw on the dressing till right before you eat it to avoid it being a soggy mess. Get your friends or family on board You’re more likely to stick to the plan if you have a friend or family member on board with you. So maybe post a picture online and let them know what you’ll be doing to spread some awareness. The more the merrier.

MONTESSORI AT HOME, THIS SUMMER. By Ouiam Charkani El Hassani

For parents and kids, this summer is going to be different from any summer we've known before. While many of the usual summer activities are still on the menu, many are not. So how are we going to keep kids busy this summer? Setting up a few areas in your home where your child can play independently will allow him to have fun playing on his own, while you recharge. There are many creative ideas for boredom busters out there, but the Montessori way takes a slightly different approach to summer boredom. In a Montessori mindset, the role of the adult is to prepare the environment, rather than to entertain the child. This means setting up a space filled with simplicity, beauty and interesting things—encouraging independent play and learning. You can do a lot to help your child successfully entertain himself through how you set up their environment. Montessori environments are simple, organized and allow children to access all of the activities they may want to complete on their own. To replicate this at home, look around your child's room and try to identify anything they haven't played with in the last two weeks. Then put it away in a closet. Bring it out a few months later when it will seem new again. It can seem baffling when children say they're bored when they have so many toys, but sometimes they are just overwhelmed by choice or clutter. Fewer toys can often be more engaging. Next, take a look at how the room is set up. Can your child reach his toys and books by himself, or are they too high on a shelf? Are things organized in a logical way? Does everything have a specific place where it belongs? These things may seem insignificant, but many young children have a strong sense of order and it can be hard for them to concentrate or really delve into playing if things are too chaotic. Here are Montessori-friendly areas you might include in your child's space to encourage independent play this summer:

ART Designate a small shelf or corner for an art area for your child. For a young child, it can be

helpful to have each art activity on its own tray. You can switch out the art supplies throughout the summer as you notice their interest waning.

FOOD PREP Many children love preparing food and there are so many fun food prep activities that toddlers and older children can complete by themselves. Clear off a small shelf or drawer in the kitchen for your child's kitchen tools, and food prep activities so that they can choose what they want. A simple one to start with for young children is peeling an orange. All you need is a small tray with two bowls, one for the orange peel and one for the orange slices. Older children can do things like make a salad or a sandwich. Just show your child how to use the tools safely and how to clean up.

SCIENCE AND NATURE Choose a small area of your home to serve as a science and nature center. This could simply

be a little table in your child's room. Include books about plants, animals, geography, and whatever else you notice your child is interested in. Find a little box or basket to use for a nature collection—where all of those little pebbles and feathers they gather outside can go. When the box is full, it's time to return some things to nature. Bonus: Include a magnifying glass so they can examine everything.

STORYTIME AND LANGUAGE A well-stocked and cozy book corner is always a wonderful place for a child to spend time. Other areas that you won't find in a classroom, but might want to include at home are pretend play and a building area with various kinds of blocks and legos. You can really set up a small area for anything your child is interested in.

Happy Summer! Chanelmama.

In Her Shoes

We get a glimpse into the wonderful personality of Rachel Gibson - Recruitment & Communications Manager at Vatel – Hotel and Tourism Business School

What’s your favourite film? Grease.

What’s your proudest achievement?

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Rachel

To treat everybody with respect, regardless of their position or status. I really believe that if you treat people well, it is mostly returned. As the saying goes, ‘Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot.’ Kindness and manners cost nothing, but mean everything.

What is your dream holiday destination?

It has to be Oman. It has a special place in my heart. I grew up there, and Muscat is home. The Omani people are so genuine and hospitable, and the coastline is stunning. I have been lucky enough to have seen turtles, nemo fish, octopus, rays, eels, angel fish, puffer fish etc. It probably would have been easier to say what I hadn’t seen while snorkelling a few metres from the shore in Muscat. The starlit desert is magical, and the mountains hold their own beauty with vast caves and even some leopards. I hope to be lucky enough to see the leopards – maybe one day!

Landing a great job at the London School of Economics & Political Science and spending a fantastic 11 years there. It really is a fabulous institution and houses some great people with incredible minds; some slightly eccentric and whacky maybe, but nevertheless still notable. I worked closely with Sir (he hates being called Sir) Howard Davies where no two days were ever the same. He once said in a radio interview that I was the first person he’d call in an emergency because I was forever shielding him from unwelcome customers, or the random oddball who walked in off the street thinking that he must be in charge for all the street lamps in UK being used as CCTV cameras! I kid you not. I have so many stories… Then I went on to manage LSE’s international partnerships – and indeed my first trip to Bahrain was for precisely that reason way back in 2011. I then moved to Bahrain permanently, around 5 years ago, and now work as the Communications and Recruitment Manager at Vatel College – ‘the Sorbonne’ of Hospitality around the world so I am now mixing education with manners!

Cats or dogs?

What song would you sing at karaoke?

Really? No. I am always too busy talking. www.womanthismonth.com

What skill would you like to learn?

I would love to learn to think before I speak. See above. Haha!

Cats, of course - although I do love all animals. Fundraising for the BSPCA was so much fun, and it was great to be surrounded by a community of people who care about the welfare of animals, especially here in Bahrain where the weather is so harsh. The animals need all the kindness and support we can offer in order to survive in this climate. Putting out a bowl of fresh water daily goes a long way… August 2020
