Musings on love.. by a Muse: There are no straightforward words to describe what has moved me for years, but I will choose “love” as the name for an experience that moves through me, originating from a place outside of time that I call The Beyond. I feel a roar that will not be silenced within me, a beautiful and excruciating awareness of my life path in this fleeting human vessel. That calling is to imbue myself and the world around me in a bath of golden light, to render beautiful every tiny interaction, every gentle touch of a flower, every rapturous attention from my man. Sometimes I feel like I am a reminder of a deeper pulse of desire that drives creation. I visualize myself as a lush and wet pond in a concrete jungle, nourishing the roots of my Earth Titan and shining my light as a black-gold sunrise.

I realized this past year that to fulfill my purpose, I must close the gap between my vessel and the Beyond and this means choosing a life of unique solitude, away from external inputs. I needed to expand my capacity to hold this energy and sensation without dissolving. I am here to become love, to be a portal.

So, in the creative space of this photoshoot, we decided to capture a deep and smoldering feminine embodiment, at ease in the light and fully at home in the dark. She has accepted the truth of her power, of her capability and her sovereignty — after all, the essence of the feminine is darkness and multiplicity. The void of creation, the destruction of all that is not love. Irreducible to archetypes, she embodies an ever expanding capacity. She does not answer to a man, or a rule, or a religion. She serves love.

Can you share more about your personal journey with hair discrimination, from experiencing bullying in India to discovering acceptance and solutions in the United States?

I was born in India and there and then as it was in the United States, if you were “unlucky” enough genetically to be born with anything less than straight or wavy hair you were different, stood out and not the “ideal of beauty”. My mother and aunts had beautiful, wavy hair and plenty

EMPOWERING INDIVIDUALS THROUGH Curl Care Solutions

of experience on how to make their hair look the best, but when it came to my frizz-prone, curly hair, she didn’t know how to help me manage it. Products for texture management or care didn’t really exist, nor did a lot of knowledge on curly hair. My mother tried her best by having my hair cut into a boy’s cut to keep it manageable, and resorted to everything from Henna to paste-soaked Fenugreek seeds, eggs and hibiscus leaves, but these homemade solutions often made things worse. By the time I was well into school, my

hair was short, boyish with a lot of frizz and damage making me stand out. No matter how good I was at sports, academics, or painting, my hair became the first thing kids would comment on and tease me about, the one thing I couldn’t change. Paired with my darker skin tone and skills with athletics, kids would call me the N-word, or even the name of male athletes like Carl Lewis or Ben Johnson. It was shockingly racist and incredibly damaging to hear when you’re young, though thankfully things in India are changing finally for the better as texture is celebrated and the European/ Colonial ideals of what is deemed beautiful are fading. By the time I had turned 30, I had a better handle on working with my hair, felt a little more confident in myself and my future husband Gautama. We married in India and emigrated to the United States and once here, I was overwhelmed with the variety of haircare products and solutions available but also noticed the change in the air regarding attitudes towards textured hair. Along the way, meeting other beautiful, confident women who had fallen in love with their hair changed my entire direction towards the hair I was born with.

What inspired you to create a Curl Care line at Perfect Locks, and how do you envision it impacting individuals who have faced similar struggles with textured hair?

My journey coming to terms with my hair, how I’d felt when I was young, and the shame of not having the knowledge or tools to attain the hair I wanted led me to founding Perfect Locks in 2008. Our goal then as now had always been to empower women to not feel victim to their appearance, but to overcome insecurities and feel beautiful on the inside and out. Hair extensions, wigs and wefts

have a transformative power not only for women to get more length or volume, but also dignity for women losing their hair while struggling with cancer, medical conditions, or genetic aging. We pride ourselves on carrying the widest variety of textures, and over time started receiving feedback from customers for homecare and maintenance products for their curly hair extensions. Curly hair comes with unique challenges: frizz, humidity reactivity, protein, and moisture loss –all of which require specific ingredients and solutions. A relationship with your hair is just like any relationship, friction creates tension and frustration…over time you fall out of love. I wanted our Curl Care line to not just be good for the

WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL GROWING UP IN BANGALORE, INDIA I WAS BORN WITH SKIN JUST A LITTLE TOO DARK AND HAIR THAT WAS FAR TOO CURLY. IN THAT TIME AND IN THAT PLACE, I DIDN’T FIT THE BEAUTY IDEAL AND WAS BULLIED AND CALLED UGLY. I’D SEE MODELS IN MAGAZINES WITH BEAUTIFULLY SLEEK STRAIGHT OR JUST SLIGHTLY WAVY HAIR AND COMPARE MYSELF TO THEM AND WISH I COULD HAVE HAIR LIKE THAT. THE INNER SHAME I FELT IN THE MIRROR FOR THE BEAUTY I WAS BORN WITH, WAS SOMETHING I PROMISED MYSELF I’D OVERCOME.

hair, but also good for their relationship with it.

How do you believe societal norms and beauty standards have evolved in regards to textured hair, both in the United States and globally?

I return home to visit family in India as well as our factory usually once a year and in the past five years I’ve seen a real change there in terms of diversity in print and TV ads. More ethnicities are represented, texture is now celebrated more, and inclusion has taken a huge step forward. I still comb my hair and look in the mirror, though this mirror is far from the place I was born into. Love your texture…because it is born from generations of beautiful women just like you. Embracing them is honoring their memory and the road they paved with the hope for a world where we would be judged by our character and not the body we were born into.

Can you elaborate on the significance of embracing one’s natural hair texture and the importance of representation in the beauty industry?

One of the biggest things is the honesty, openness, and available knowledge that the Internet and social media has given women everywhere. Unlike when I was a little girl, today when someone has a curl challenge, they can take to Facebook groups or forums and be greeted warmly by an army of Curl Queens from all over the world ready to listen, help and give them the confidence to rock the hair you’re born with.

What challenges did you face in developing your Curl Care line, and how did you ensure that it addressed the diverse needs of individuals with textured hair?

A major factor when it comes to texture is moisture control: too much moisture is not good, and not enough isn’t good either. We went through multiple batches and samples to refine the formula of our Curl Care to not just work great on

textured hair, but on textured extensions hair that doesn’t get the benefit of being attached to your scalp and receive beneficial natural sebum oil. We finally found the right mix of natural ingredients and emollients to offer the right amount of care for any of the textures we offer.

You mentioned rituals that have worked for you over the years. Could you share some of these rituals and how they contribute to the health and maintenance of textured hair?

Great hair starts at the scalp, as anxiety, stress and all that negativity and even medications end up there. A ritual I’ve been using for a long time is one a stylist taught me back when I lived in India and it’s easy. Once a week before going to bed, I take a drop or two of olive oil and mix it with a little water. Massage it all over the hair and gently comb your hair to work it in and detangle the hair with a nice wide tooth comb or extensions brush. Add a little coconut oil and work it through the lengths and ends and braid your hair into plaits. In the morning when you untie your braids, beautiful curls just roll out and it stays that way the whole day!

PERFECT LOCKS INTERVIEW
21 EDITOR'S CHOICE EDITION | FASHION & BEAUTY AUTHORITY WWW.REDHOTMONDE.COM

In what ways do you hope to continue advocating for inclusivity and acceptance of all hair types within the beauty industry and beyond?

Now that the larger change is happening here, in India and all over the world, one of the ways we help from our own sphere of influence is to continue to preach a celebration of texture. Each February we do a large push sharing stories from our own team, as well as customers on how they came to love their hair, as well as ramp up our educational content to help guide women in finding solutions and answers. Since the beginning we have had a rule on diversity and representation of multiple ethnicities in all of our in-house hair trend collections, a problem that’s been in the fashion and beauty industry for a long time now. We’re finally starting to see beautifully textured hair and curls celebrated on fashion runways and on magazine covers and it’s a huge step forward in progress.

How do you see your personal experiences and journey influencing your approach to entrepreneurship and product development within the hair care industry?

In life you can either allow your circumstances, shame and pain either define you or not. For me, I made the choice for it to be the latter, to motivate, help and uplift others so they don’t have to feel like I did. It’s helped me to be a better businesswoman as much as it has made me a better, more empathetic person. If I had someone to help guide me all those years ago in figuring out my hair and learning to appreciate it, it would’ve made a huge difference. With Perfect Locks we really pride ourselves on education through our social channels, events and classes we host in our showroom store, as well as video how-to’s and feature articles. We teach everything from home beauty remedies to understanding frizz and even hairstyle inspirations.

What advice would you give to individuals who are struggling to embrace their natural hair texture or facing discrimination based on their appearance?

You have to start by being honest with yourself about your blessings in life. We all fall prey sometimes to being critical of our appearance, but a change in attitude starts with remembering all the

good things in life rather than focusing on the negative. Loving yourself is a journey and for many of us it’s a lifelong one and often the things that are in the way are to appreciate the gifts you’ve been given. Advice that was given to me a long time ago by my own Mother is that life is a climb, if you constantly focus on who’s above you it will always be about wanting to be where they are. But true happiness comes from realizing how far YOU have come, by looking down and seeing where you’ve been. Your hair is no different…stop fighting it, start loving it and find the language to talk to it.

Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for Perfect Locks and the Curl Care line in terms of empowering individuals and challenging societal beauty standards?

I founded this company with my husband because I felt a deep desire to be there for women in ways I wish someone had been there for me: to give me hope, guidance, answers, solutions and even tools to not just work with my hair but love it. I also believe in synergy, the yin and yang of business and for everything we take in, I try to give back in more ways than one. We’ve been blessed to work with local hospitals to provide wigs for children fighting cancer and even brave women facing cancers of their own. Beyond that, since our earliest days we ensure that hair is acquired ethically from women in India directly from the temples where they give it in exchange for blessings during a ritual called Tonsure. I wanted to go a step further, empowering women in India with well-paying jobs in our factory, as well as career path for themselves to grow and provide for their families. We can track how every single purchase made sends a portion back to India and help build communities there. My dream and wish for the future is that our name stands for more than just hair extensions, it’s a brand that brings hope, empowerment and dignity to those who need it.

Fashion MAVERICKS

Explore the history of San Francisco through fashion. Featuring one of the most iconic collections of 20th- and 21st-century women’s clothing in the United States, this exhibition includes 100 collection highlights, along with local loans of high fashion and haute couture. The first major presentation of our costume collection in over 35 years, it showcases designs from French couturiers, Japanese avant-garde designers, and other pillars of the fashion industry, including Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, Christopher John Rogers, Comme des Garçons, and Rodarte. The designs on view, many never shown before, reflect San Francisco’s long-standing tradition of self-expression through fashion.

In San Francisco — a city with a vibrant history of embracing radical clothing styles — fashion mavericks have perennially supported boundary-pushing designers. These advocates include retailers, such as Susan Foslien, Sherri McMullen, or the Ospital family of Modern Appealing Clothing (MAC); individuals like Georgette “Dodie” Rosekrans, who famously financed John Galliano’s early collections; and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, which preserve designers’ legacies in their permanent collection. Today, the Museums’ collection boasts avant-garde creations by the Japanese fashion designers Rei Kawakubo, Kei Ninomiya, Junya Watanabe, and Yohji Yamamoto as well as European in-

novators like Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Alexander McQueen.

The term avant-garde is often synonymous with innovative, unusual, and experimental ideas; in fashion, it denotes garments or objects that redefine artistic convention, utilize new tools and techniques, and question the very nature of what constitutes clothing (as noted by Diana Crane in The Transformation of the Avant-Garde: The New York Art World, 1940–1985 [Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1987]). The work of Chinese American designer Kaisik Wong, who was active in 1970s San Francisco, embodied avant-garde fashion while also exemplifying the tenets of Bay Area counterculture: Wong eschewed mass production, making his clothes by hand, and blurred the physical limits between dress and body with amorphous forms that drew from a wide array of artistic, cultural, and mythical references.

THERE ARE ICONIC LOOKS — BOTH FOR DAY AND EVENING, AS WELL AS SHOES — FROM JEANNE LANVIN TO KARL LAGERFELD . . . NOT TO MENTION A CACHE OF LESSER KNOWN

TALENTS

In Europe, Gaultier, Galliano, and McQueen interrogated the traditional trappings of haute couture with their 1990s collections. While Gaultier injected humor into and glamorized street style as high fashion, Galliano combined diverse sources from various eras to create never-before-seen shapes, styles, and silhouettes. A virtuoso in the art of construction, McQueen fused the best of Savile Row tailoring (Savile Row is a street in London well known for its bespoke men’s tailoring) and haute couture techniques with innovative and unusual materials to create garments that challenged customary notions of race, class, religion, and sexuality — often grouped under collection names that did the same. All three designers presented their works in largescale runway productions, with showmanship antithetical to the couture tradition of austerity.

WHO WILL

This same period witnessed the emergence of Japanese designers in the international fashion landscape, with designer Kenzō Takada debuting his collection in Paris in , followed by Issey Miyake (1971), Hanae Mori (1977), Yamamoto (1981), and Kawakubo (1981), among others. These artists challenged the conventions they saw in Europe and the United States by employing unusual materials and dressmaking techniques, such as expansive forms, unfinished elements, and asymmetry. When famed fashion editor Polly Mellen saw Yamamoto’s and Kawakubo’s collections in 1982, she proclaimed, “It shows us a whole new wave of dressing. It is modern and free” (Nina Hyde, “Japan’s Runaway Looks,” Washington Post, October 16, 1982).

In recent decades, a new generation of Japanese designers, namely Ninomiya and Watanabe, have further pushed the limitations of fashion by emphasizing fabrics made by contemporary technologies and using innovative clothing constructions that envelop, obscure, and often overwhelm the body. These garments echo the evolving urban landscape of San Francisco — a city populated by structures that push the confines of modern architecture, likewise made by advanced engineering and with stateof-the-art industrial materials.
