ason Bates, as the first composer-in-residence at the Kennedy Center, he showcased various artists on KC Jukebox, blending electronic sounds into symphonic music, championed by renowned conductors like Muti, Tilson Thomas, Alsop, and Slaktin. He's the most-performed composer of his generation, composed for films including Van Sant's The Sea of Trees, and won a Grammy for Philharmonia Fantastique's soundtrack. This season, his Nomad Concerto premieres with violinist Gil Shaham and the Philadelphia Orchestra, exploring Roma music. His Piano Concerto continues with Daniil Trifonov in Chicago and Rome. The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs at San Francisco Opera, a Grammy-winning opera, returns to Santa Fe.

Philharmonia Fantastique, an animated film and live orchestra piece, is his most-performed work. It combines creativity and technology, with a Grammy-winning soundtrack by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He's known for his DJ work as DJ Masonic and Mercury Soul. His current project, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay for The Metropolitan Opera, is based on Michael Chabon's novel. It explores two cousins' journey in 1940s New York, creating a superhero amidst WWII. Los Angeles Opera premieres it in October 2024, followed by The Metropolitan Opera. Bates is a diverse artist and a faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

warded the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Opera, The (R) evolution of Steve Jobs is a kinetic and soulful exploration of an iconic figure of our time. The opera exists at the intersection of creativity, technology, communication—and, ultimately, the tragedy. Animated by an electro-acoustic soundworld and a non-linear libretto, the opera journeys through the key scenes of Jobs’ life and his early death. Both charismatic and cold-hearted, Steve acts as both protagonist and antagonist in a story that is also propelled by the key people of his life: his wife Laureen; his Buddhist mentor Kōbun Chino Otogawa; Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; and Chrisann Brennan, the mother of his disowned daughter. This intimate cast is supplemented by a small chorus of representing techies, students, reporters, and guests. The opera sold out its initial run at Santa Fe Opera, adding an extra performance to accommodate the huge demand for tickets. The subsequent album release on Pentatone Records earned a Grammy in 2019. Following performances of the original production by Seattle Opera, San Francisco Opera and Indiana University, 2022 sees a new production from Tomer Zvulun of The Atlanta Opera, co-produced by Austin Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City, also heading to the Utah Symphony, Calgary Opera and beyond.

The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs follows the visionary Apple co-founder as he looks back on his life and career and confronts his own mortality. The opera is described as taking place “at a moment in Jobs’ life when he must face his own mortality and circles back to the events and people in his past that shaped and inspired him: his father Paul, Zen Buddhism, his relationship with a woman whose child he initially disowned, his quick rise and fall as a mogul, and – most importantly – his wife Laurene, who showed him the power of love and connection.”

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND CREATING AN OPERA CENTERED AROUND STEVE JOBS AND HIS LIFE? WHOSE IDEA WAS IT AND HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED? Operas through the centuries are filled with creative characters – from Bohème’s starving artists to Death in Venice’s haunted author. I wondered if an opera could be built around a different kind of creative individual: the creative technologist. Living in the Bay Area for a decade leading up to that moment, I became familiar with the fascinating breed of creative people whose innovations transform civilization. And no one better exemplified this than Steve Jobs. With this idea in hand, I approached librettist Mark Campbell, whose initial hesitation eased once he began to study the fascinating life of the subject.

elements, such as electronica and a non-linear narrative. Balancing new and old has been a hallmark of my symphonic work as well, such as Mothership, which animates a classical dance form with techno and jazz. Creating memorable musical material – tunes you can remember, or even soundworlds or textures – allows for much deeper storytelling, and it's especially essential if new elements are added.

WHAT ASPECTS OF STEVE JOBS’ PERSONALITY OR EXPERIENCES DID YOU FIND MOST COMPELLING TO CONVEY THROUGH THE MUSIC? Early on I realized that this opera would be far richer if we made it not just about Steve, but also about the amazing people close to him. His wife Laureen acts as the grounding force in Steve's life, so her music is soulful harmonies in the low strings. Steve's Buddhist advisor Kobun exists in a meditative soundworld of prayer bowls and gentle electronic wind. These are just a few examples of the different kinds of music inspired not only by Steve, but the essential people in his life.
