The Best Christmas Gadgets

For Him

Left to right: iGrill Smart Thermometer; Mipow Playbulb Bluetooth speaker; LG Watch R; GoPro Hero 3 action camera

Buying gadgets can be tricky: if you’re buying for a grownup there’s a very good chance that they’ve already bought the gadgets they want. But don’t despair, because it turns out that there are lots of gadget-related gifts you can buy for the man who has everything. A good place to start is with a case. You can spend hundreds if you want something from a name designer, but firms such as Tuff-Luv make really nice vintage leather Kindle cases for around £40. And of course you can get leather cases for other devices such as laptops and tablets too. If he hasn’t already got a tablet, there are plenty of alternatives to the all-conquering iPad and iPad Mini. Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD (£89) is good for ebooks and movies, and a range of affordable Windows 8 tablets have been launched by the likes of Asus, Acer and Toshiba, all below £200. If he fancies himself as the next Jamie Oliver, Belkin’s Chef Stand and Wand (£29) is a smart gift idea. It’s a tablet stand designed specifically for the kitchen, enabling him to see the recipe (or the tutorial videos if he’s

4

The SP5 Magazine

using cooking apps or YouTube) without getting it covered in food. If he’s more of an outdoor cooking type, iGrill’s range of smartphone-connected thermometers (from around £34.99) give him a new toy to play with while he’s burning burgers. One of the more unusual new gadgets we’ve seen is the PlayBulb, a bluetooth speaker that’s also an LED light bulb. The £59 device is controlled via an iPhone and Android app that enables you play music and turn the light on and off. For sporty types there are stacks of gadget gifts, such as the Fitbit Flex activity tracker (£75), the Zepp motion sensor for tennis players (£129), Garmin’s Forerunner GPS watches (£89) and the TomTom Multi-Sport GPS Watch (£149). If you really want to delight a gadget fan, this year’s hot technology is the smartwatch - of which LG’s G Watch R is one of the nicest. The price hadn’t been announced as we went to press but the Androidcompatible smartwatch is likely to be keenly priced - not least because Apple has its own smartwatch, which is likely to

be a big seller this Christmas. If he’s already shelled out for a smart watch, how about a drone? Parrot’s AR.Drone 2.0 (£224) is a smartphonecontrolled quadricopter, a flying drone that can stream high definition video back to the owner’s phone or tablet. There are drones to suit all budgets, from the £36 Quadricopter X4 to drones costing more than £600. Many bigger drones are designed to carry GoPro cameras, which are small high definition cameras that can be attached to almost anything. Our current favourite video, a YouTube hit, was made by strapping a GoPro to a dog’s collar and then letting it sprint down to the beach for a swim, but we’ve seen GoPros strapped to bike helmets, to remote controlled cars and even to musical instruments. Expect to pay from around £199. You don’t have to spend lots of money for a great gadget gift, though. The excellent Aeropress coffee maker produces brews that rival the world’s most expensive coffee machines, and you can pick one up - brand new - for around £25.

What’s On

November & December Friday 7th Nov 9.30am to 4.00pm - 5TH ANNUAL WINTER SALE The White Horse, Downton. The Winter Sale raises funds for the charity Wheels4Life. There’s a huge range of individual stalls selling food, china, jewellery, clothes and shoes, leather ware, toys and innumerable gifts – it’s a great place to do some Christmas shopping! The White Horse serve endless cups of coffee and provide a delicious lunch menu. There’s plenty of parking and Shipsey’s of Salisbury have been extremely generous in supporting the Winter Sale by sponsoring a marquee to accommodate extra stalls. The Winter Sale was set up after 19 year old Rory Walworth from Downton died in a cycling accident in September 2009. His family and friends have been fund raising for the charity Wheels4Life since and are so pleased to report that the total raised to date has almost reached £50,000. Further information about the incredible work that the charity does can be found at the website www.wheels4life. org. There’s also a full film update on DVD - please contact Lynn Walworth on lynnwalworth@gmail. com or call 07774 052413 to loan a copy. @Wheels4Life

How to Organise Your Christmas Spending By Ann Haldon

Nobody wants the worry of huge credit card debts in the New Year, so why put yourself through that stress when you can be organised in advance? With a little forethought and planning it’s possible to get to the New Year with your finances intact, without compromising on the celebrations. These ideas will make your money go further, help to keep your spending in check and let you stay firmly in the black.

Christmas Clubs Christmas Clubs are still popular despite the problems experienced by Farepak Hampers in 2006 when savers lost their money. They are basically savings schemes that help you spread the cost of Christmas, with members making small monthly deposits that cannot be withdrawn until November or December. If you can put money away into a separate bank account or track your Christmas ‘fund’ within an existing savings account, that would be a better idea. You have the freedom to shop where you like, and withdraw some of the money if you spot the perfect present before December.

14

The SP5 Magazine

Is it worth trying a cash back site? Cash back sites like Quidco and Top Cashback offer a percentage cash back on every purchase made. A directory of participating online retailers is listed on these sites, which pay a referral fee to the cash back site for directing shoppers their way. A percentage of this fee becomes the cash back you receive. Both Quidco and Top Cashback offer two tiers of membership. The basic account is free of charge, with the ‘premium’ account offering additional services for a £5.00 annual fee. A range of payout methods is available, including having your money paid into a bank account, PayPal account, or choosing an Amazon Gift Card.

A good time to use credit Purchases of £100 to £30,000 are automatically protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. This means that if the trader goes out of business, or the product is faulty and you can’t get your money back from the seller, your credit card company provides a full refund. For larger Christmas purchases, it’s a good idea to use a credit card for this reason alone as long as the outstanding balance is repaid as soon as possible. It offers a valuable level of protection that isn’t available with a debit card.

Be cautious with gift cards With so many household names going into liquidation,

it’s not always a good idea to give gift cards at Christmas. If there is any doubt surrounding the ongoing status of a company, it might be safer to give cash or a cheque in a Christmas gift envelope instead.

Vouchers and discounts Voucher codes and deals can be found at various websites including www. moneysupermarket.com and www.moneysavingexpert. co.uk with savings to be made on a wide range of products from electronic gadgets to jewellery and perfume. Some codes offer free postage and packing, so it’s worth shopping around on the internet for these deals.

0% credit cards for when it’s too late If it all goes wrong and you’re dreading the credit card bill, look for a 0% interest credit card and transfer the balance if you can. This spreads the cost interest-free over a period of time, usually between 6 months and 2 years. There is generally a transfer fee of around 3% of the balance, and you’ll need to pay it off within the 0% interest time limit to get the most benefit. http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/shopping/section75-protectyour-purchases http://www.moneysupermarket. com/credit-cards/guide-to-creditcard-protection/ http://www.moneysupermarket. com/vouchers/store/asdadirect/14/1/ http://www.quidco.com/ http://www.topcashback.co.uk/

This sweetmeat is a traditional Italian Christmas treat packed with nuts, figs, honey and warming spices. It can be made a couple of weeks before Christmas, just wrap well in greaseproof paper and store in an airtight container.

Cake & Bake

Panforte de Siena Makes 25 squares Ready in 1½ hours, plus cooling

Ingredients • 150g whole blanched almonds • 125g pistachio nuts • 175g dried figs, chopped • Grated zest of 1 orange • 75g plain flour • 2 tbsp cocoa powder • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • tsp ground cloves • 115g caster sugar • 175g runny honey • Icing sugar, for dusting

Tip You can vary the fruits and nuts used in this recipe - replace the figs with chopped candied peel, dried apricots or glace pineapple and instead of pistachios try toasted hazelnuts.

1. Preheat the oven to 150°C/130°C fan/gas 2. Grease a deep 18cm square tin and line the base with baking parchment. Toast the almonds under a medium grill until just golden then roughly chop. Mix in a bowl with the pistachios, figs and orange zest. 2. Sift over the flour and cocoa powder and stir well then stir in the cinnamon and ground cloves. Set aside. 3. Put the caster sugar and honey in a heavy-based pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil then let the syrup bubble gently for about 5 minutes, without stirring the mixture, until it begins to thicken. 4. Remove the pan from the heat and quickly add the nut and flour mixture stirring well with a wooden spoon. Spoon into the prepared tin and smooth the surface using the back of a damp spoon. 5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour then remove the cake from the oven and leave in the tin until completely cold. Remove the cake from the tin, peel off the lining paper and dust thickly with icing sugar. Use a sharp knife to cut into squares to serve.
