HCS - ONCE THE FAMILY HOME OF FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
The extra-curricular provision is excellent and a strength of the school
Ambition, Creativity and Achievement
H
ampshire Collegiate School was founded in 2006 by the United Church Schools Trust following the merger of two schools: Embley Park School, a boy’s school founded in 1946 and the Atherley School, a girl’s founded in 1926. The school is now fully co-educational and welcomes children from 2½ - 18. Following an initial investment of over £15m, facilities on campus include a performing arts centre, a sports hall, science labs and ICT suites, tennis courts and an all-weather hockey facility. Set in 130 acres of private parkland,

including wild gardens and woodland, Hampshire Collegiate School (HCS) was once the family home of Florence Nightingale. The Prep School and Nursery School are on the same site in separate, purpose-built accommodation and offer an exciting curriculum both inside and outside the classroom. There is a vibrant Sixth Form and a thriving boarding community that attracts students from both the UK and overseas. The school is celebrating the outcome of their recent Independent inspection (Nov
2014) and very proud that this endorsed the impressive progress the school has made recently under “a new, highly effective, senior leadership team”. The school is continuing to encourage academic ambition, but also embraces broader creative, sporting and personal educational goals. Inspectors noted ‘The extracurricular provision is excellent and a strength of the school’. Pupils at Hampshire Collegiate School can choose from over 70 clubs and activities which take place at lunchtimes and
after school throughout the academic year. These range from hobbies-based activities such as creative writing or chess, to the arts and sports, which can include anything from play rehearsals and jazz club, to horse riding, sailing and falconry. In the summer of 2014, Hampshire Collegiate School celebrated its best ever GCSE and A Level results. In the recent league tables released by the Department of Education, the school was fifth of all 144 schools in Hampshire for 5+ A-C GCSEs. The school’s motto ‘vita studia una’, life and learning are one, encompasses the school’s desire to develop personal autonomy and responsibility, the ambition to achieve personal levels of excellence, a sense of service to others and the self-confidence to think for oneself. Whether a boarder or a day pupil at HCS, each individual is valued and encouraged to prepare themselves fully for life after school.
HCS is well known for combining academic ambition with broader learning goals, from sports to extra-curricular clubs and trips, ensuring that all pupils leave as resourceful, resilient, tolerant, creative and empathetic individuals, fully equipped for the next stage of their lives. If you are interested in finding out more about Hampshire Collegiate School, please see below for contact details or drop in to their next Open Day on Tuesday March 10th, 2015 from 9.00-12.00pm. You are more than welcome to arrange a tour of the school on an alternative date if you cannot make the Open Day. Nursery & Prep School Tel: 01794 515737. Gardening
Grow Your Own
I
’m a great fan of home grown vegetables, particularly as growing my own allows me to choose to eat only organically grown fruit and vegetables, which are free from chemical pesticides. Even if you only have a tiny patio garden or backyard, you can brighten up your supper table with some good looking vegetables, home grown in containers. It is important to use large containers. Smaller ones may look fine but most vegetables need an evenly moist compost around their roots at all times, and so a larger volume of compost is much easier to look after. They will need to be positioned in a sunny spot as vegetables won’t crop well in a gloomy position. Growing bags will do but they don’t exactly look good. In addition, they often seem to contain pretty poor compost and, when it comes to keeping growing bags adequately watered, they are nothing short of a nightmare. Large flower pots or planters are the best bet, and you can use terracotta, plastic or glazed pots. Make sure that the containers are well supplied with drainage holes, and that you have a layer of broken pots on top.
6
The SP5 Magazine
I suggest using either a standard multi-purpose or a multi-purpose compost mixed with a loam based compost – both produce good crops and are fairly easy to maintain. You can incorporate some controlled release fertiliser granules or feed regularly with a liquid feed. There are lots of different vegetables that can be grown in containers but sometimes getting the right variety can make all the difference to how well they perform. Check labels or seed catalogues as those particularly well suited to life in a pot are described as so. If you like home grown beans you can use any variety of dwarf French bean, or if you prefer, a runner. The miniature runner, ‘Hestia’, has pretty red and white flowers and doesn’t need a support to climb. Cucumbers can be grown in pots; choose a variety such as ‘Patio Pick’ which should manage to crop well despite its small size. Provided you have a large and deep container then courgettes are also worth a try, and do remember to keep them well fed. If you like hot pepper and have a sheltered, warm spot then try the crazy looking, heavy cropping
‘Medusa’ or the pretty but hot ‘Etna’. Salad crops can all be grown in a growing bag or other container, and are guaranteed to look good. For some really wacky colour try growing the rich-red stemmed Ruby Chard or ‘Bright Lights’ chard with stems in pink, orange, red, yellow and white. When it comes to maintenance, remember that anything growing in a pot needs more TLC as its roots will not be able to tap into the further reaches of the soil to find moisture and nutrients. Plenty of food and water is a must, and I tend to use a high potash liquid tomato feed, which works a treat. To keep your pots free from slug and snail attacks, try using sticky-backed copper tape stuck in a complete ring around the top of the pot or planter. Once everything is growing well and cropping, don’t forget to pick patio veg regularly if you want the plants to keep cropping. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ veg growing system, biological controls, fleece, copper tape and lot’s more besides.

Home & Interiors Look Back In Nostalgia
By Katherine Sorrell
paint, or else push the boat out and go for floral wallpaper. A hand-block printed effect, in a palette of light, bright and cheery colours, is particularly effective. For bathrooms and kitchens, painted tongue and groove panelling or white beveledged tiles (laid in a brick bond pattern) work especially well.
Do you yearn for the charming styles of the past? For the pretty patterns and jolly colours, the homemade accessories, the simple good looks that made a home really homely? Then read on for interiors expert Katherine Sorrell’s look at nostalgic style. Take a look at your floors for a first step towards nostalgic style. Plain or painted wooden boards are ideal, with flatwoven rugs for extra warmth where necessary, though neutral carpets or naturalfibre coverings are a good alternative, while you could opt for stone tiles in hallways or kitchens. On the walls, you might keep things plain and simple with while or off-white
10
The SP5 Magazine
Furniture can be really inexpensive –you might pick something up at a local auction or even a second-hand shop for next to nothing. Look for sturdy, useful pieces in a timeless style, made from pine, oak or Lloyd Loom. Anything too dark or heavy looking can be painted – though make sure it is not too massive and overbearing in the room. Don’t expect perfection: knocked corners or faded upholstery may even enhance the overall look, while mismatching pieces aren’t too much of a problem provided they fit into the overall aesthetic. Textiles are often the key to getting nostalgic style just right. Think plain fabrics combined with ticking stripes, gingham, spots and florals – spriggy or else big, blowsy blooms. Don’t aim for over-coordination; instead, a range of complementary colours and patterns gives a suitably eclectic effect. Natural fabrics (such as cotton, linen and wool) are nicest, in a range of weights and effects, such as tweed, canvas, muslin or sateen. Remnants, if you’re good with a sewing machine, can be run up into all sorts of lovely items. Window
treatments, for example, are a doddle – just a pair of gathered curtains – while leftovers can quickly be made into cushion covers. Patchwork quilts, of course, are simply perfect in the bedroom, as are Welsh blankets and satin eiderdowns, while knitting and crochet (especially granny squares) are essential ingredients in virtually any room.
Displays of pretty accessories can be the making of this look, whether it’s spongeprinted ceramics, pressed glass, blue-and-white crockery or enamelware. Modern reproductions are easy to find and not expensive, but more fun can be had in seeking out just the right original bits and bobs, from storage jars to aprons, cut-glass jugs to wooden kitchen utensils, whether it’s at a vintage fair, charity shops or your local car boot sale. Think dressers piled with pretty crockery, a stack of biscuit tins on a shelf or laceedged towels in the bathroom. Add woven baskets, metal buckets, vintage milk bottles, bristle brushes, some lengths of bunting, even old books such as orange Penguin classics or Ladybird children’s stories; and finish things off with some informal arrangements of native flowers tucked into jam jars or informal jugs or vases. The result? You have transformed yesterday’s pleasures into today’s delightful treasures. Smoked
Recipe
Haddock Kedgeree Serves 4
Ready in 45 minutes
Just a few ingredients are needed to make this simple rice dish but it’s full of flavour! It’s ideal for a quick and easy supper or filling weekend brunch served with crusty bread or warmed mini naan breads, if liked.
Ingredients: • 350g smoked haddock fillet • 4 large eggs • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • tsp ground coriander • tsp ground turmeric • 1 tsp mild curry powder • 300g easy-cook basmati rice • 3tbsp fresh chopped coriander
Tip:
Add a large handful of baby spinach leaves or some lightly fried mushrooms just before the end of cooking to make this dish even more substantial.
18
The SP5 Magazine
Place the haddock in a large pan, cover with plenty of cold water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 5-6 minutes until the fish just flakes. Boil the eggs in a small pan of water for 7-8 minutes. Remove the fish with a slotted spoon and flake the flesh discarding any skin and bones. Strain the cooking liquid into a jug – you’ll need about 600ml so top up with water if needed. Run the boiled eggs under cold water until cool enough to handle. Remove the shells and cut into wedges. Set aside. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the onion and garlic over a medium heat for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the spices and cook for 1 minute then add the basmati rice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually pour in the reserved stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes or until the rice is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally. Gently stir in the flaked haddock, eggs and coriander and heat through for 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately.

Gadgets for Green Fingers
W
hile few of us are likely to spend nearly £900 on Flymo’s latest robot lawnmower, let alone £2,500 for a high-end robot mower, there are lots of garden gadgets that can make life easier and more fun. One of the most useful developments is the arrival of cordless tools ranging from lawnmowers to electric chainsaws. Battery technology has improved dramatically in a very short time, so it’s possible to get tools such as Black & Decker’s 36V cordless strimmer that can cut up to 3,750 metres on a single charge. Just remember to charge them up before you use them, as recharging flat batteries can take a while. If you fancy something a bit less high tech, Japanese hori-hori knives might be right up your street: the name means “digging digging” and a hori-hori knife’s straight sharp blade makes it perfect for everything from planting to cutting roots. They can be a little tricky to find, but eBay is always a good source of such tools. Another great tool is the Woodman’s Pal. It’s a little pricey

- expect to pay £50 upwards but it’s really clever and really useful. The Pal was originally designed for the US Army in the early 1940s and it’s a cross between an axe and a machete, with a hooked section on the end. That makes it great for clearing all kinds of vegetation, and it replaces a whole bunch of tools including pruning saws, shears, loppers and in some cases, even chainsaws. This year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) featured the usual home entertainment technology, lots of TVs and even more laptops, but it also had an unusually large selection of garden gadgets. One of the cutest was the Green Farm Cube. Another Japanese design, and it’s a hydroponic grow box that enables you to grow plants such as herbs anywhere all year round. At around £120 it’s quite expensive, but it looks great and works well. It’s particularly good for people who want to grow things but don’t have a garden to do it. It seems that smartphones are taking over every aspect of our lives, so it’s not a surprise that they’re starting to look at our gardens too. App-connected gadgets are everywhere at the
moment. Netatmo’s Connected Weather Station (approx £110) tells your phone about indoor and outdoor humidity, temperature and air quality as well as predicting the weather, while Koubachi’s Plant Sensor 2 Outdoor (approx £96) measures soil moisture, sunlight, infra-red light, temperature and more to let you know exactly how well valuable plants are doing. Another CES exhibitor, Edyn, promises to deliver the “connected garden” with sensors that analyse the soil, monitor the temperature and even check the weather forecast to help you decide what to plant and how to look after it. The product range also includes smart water valves that automatically water your plants, and solar power means you don’t need to run any cables. It’s overkill for a couple of blooms from Homebase, but if you’re a serious gardener it’s a seriously clever bit of kit. Edyn is currently available for pre-order, and the sensor and water valve are $99 (£65) and $59 (£39) respectively.
