N

estled on the edge of the New Forest, in the beautiful country village of Woodfalls, you can discover Katie Reid Beauty. It is a small boutique salon offering ladies a range of treatments including nails, facials, massage, waxing and more. This rather unique salon is open daily, but also available for evening appointments, great if you are working or have children. Katie uses a range of well known luxury brands such as CND® Shellac, Vinylux, Neals Yard, SiennaX, and her most recent addition, Lycon Wax. Lycon is fast to apply, has an extra strong grip and leaves no sticky residue. It is made from a special blend of natural and organic raw materials to grip and remove hair as short as 2mm.

As well as working predominantly as a beauty therapist Katie enjoys being a freelance Makeup Artist. She offers bridal makeup across Hampshire and Wiltshire with one of her brides featuring in Salisbury Life and Rock and Roll Bride. Last year she was head makeup artist for ‘Salisbury Fashion Week,’ and also worked on ‘Wiltshire Society’s’ Front Cover. Katie frequently uses social media in order to keep her clients “in the loop” with various posts regarding promotions, offers, events and trends. “Facebook is a great way for my clients to see what I am up to. They can write reviews about their treatment/experience.” New clients using the salon will need to book an appointment and will receive 10% OFF their first treatment. Hobbies

Beginner’s Guide to Keeping Chickens Suitable Breeds Chickens come in all shapes and sizes, which can be a bit confusing. But if you’re looking purely for egg-laying birds then commercial hybrids may be your best bet. Isa Brown, Black Rocks, White Star, Lomans, and Bluebell will all lay in good quantities for most of the year: an average of 300 eggs per bird isn’t out of the way.

by Terry J Beebe Keeping chickens has become one of Britain’s most popular pastimes. Everyone wants their own fresh eggs, but there’s more to it than that: chickens aren’t just productive; they’re also absorbing and friendly. They become pets. They’re relatively inexpensive to keep, but they do need a certain amount of daily maintenance to keep them in good condition.

General Considerations Before you jump in, though, there are a few considerations you need to take into account. First – and this is really important! – check with your local authority in case there are restrictions on keeping livestock on your property. Next, you need to decide how many birds you would like to keep. As a beginner you need to be sensible and start small. Depending on how much space

6

The SP5 Magazine

you have, two to six is a good start and will supply enough eggs for the average family.

Housing For such a small flock, a henhouse measuring 6ft by 4ft will provide all the space the birds need, as long as they have an outside run and the house is just for sleeping. It certainly won’t be large enough if you have to keep the birds confined. Buying a henhouse needs careful thought. A ready-built one can be expensive, but if you’re handy enough you can build your own. Whether readybuilt or home-made, it needs to be easy to access and maintain – that is, both chicken- and keeper-friendly. As well as access, check for good but not draughty ventilation, enough perches and nest-boxes, and robust, secure construction – you don’t just want to keep the chickens in, you want to keep the foxes out! Having said that, you need to be able to move the henhouse from time to time as the soil on which it stands becomes fouled and soggy.

These hybrids are excellent as a starter bird, being both productive and quite easy to feed and keep. If you’d prefer something a little more special such as a pure breed chicken, though, then you need to track down a recognised breeder and get expert advice. There are some spectacular pure breeds that will still give you a good supply of eggs, although not as many as the hybrids. Look for breeds such as Rhode Island Red, Light Sussex, Barnavelder, Maran, and Wellsummer – all reasonably easy breeds, and not too flighty.

Water A constant supply of clean, fresh water is absolutely central to your flock’s wellbeing. Chickens by and large are happy to drink out of a bucket, but a proper poultry font will keep their water cleaner and fresher. Keep it outside the henhouse – if it’s left inside it can create damp which can easily lead to health problems – but it needs to be under cover to protect the water from wild bird droppings. And change the water every single day – something you need to remember at holiday times.

Food A balanced feed is very important. It generally comes either in pellet or mash form and

free shavings for the bedding – not straw. Straw gets damp very quickly and then goes mouldy, which is guaranteed to cause respiratory infections.

Outside The chicken run also needs to be kept as clean and fresh as possible. It is very important that the birds are not running on soiled and sour ground. Giving the chickens’ outdoor area a good digging over from time to time helps keep it fresh. both should contain all the nutrients the birds need. You can, however, add extra vitamins and minerals and even cod liver oil to give them that extra boost. A small amount of wheat is quite good as an afternoon treat.

General Maintenance Like all domestic animals, chickens need to be looked after. Cleanliness is essential to keep them disease-free and in good general health. Muck out the henhouse regularly (another thing to remember when you’re jetting off on holiday!) and use dry, dust-

Insects There’s quite a variety of fleas and mites that will regard your chickens as free board and lodging, and some of them can cause loss of condition and even sickness. Control them with regular doses of good-quality powders and sprays. Chickens are beautiful and endlessly fascinating birds, and keeping them is a very rewarding pastime, with the fringe benefit of a steady supply of eggs. Why not give it a go?

Host Families Wanted

C

otswold Guardians (CG) is a company that provides good family accommodation for international students at boarding schools in the UK. I started the company in 2004, in response to the increasing demand for homely places to stay during schools’ closed weekends and half-terms. The main aim is to give students experience of a caring, secure environment where they can relax within a family setting. The happiness and well-being of my students is of paramount importance. As well as providing them with a taste of English culture and traditions, the stays will give them the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills, by passing on the flavours of life in their own countries.

East Sussex is an area which is becoming more and more popular, so I am looking for local families who can host individual students for Exeat (closed weekends) and half-terms. This is often on an occasional basis, and sometimes at short notice. Therefore it is important that I have a network of families so that any one family has as much flexibility as they need. Naturally, there will be generous rewards. 27/7/10

The role of the family will vary, as it is important that the student becomes one of them for the time of their stay. This might entail taking them

shopping, joining in with family celebrations, going to the cinema or just allowing them the freedom to have their own time and space. Wi-fi in the house is essential as most of the students want to communicate with friends and family sometimes they can find it difficult from school. Their individual needs are very simple: a clean room to themselves, a warm and comfortable bed and attendance all the family meals. Page 1

Early Learning

Hale Preschool opens its doors to funded 2 year olds

A

s of September 2014, Hale Preschool will be opening its doors to welcome 2 year funded children thanks to the recent national offer from the Department for Education that has been developed to improve outcomes for identified two year olds who would benefit from accessing high quality early years provision. This funding also helps to tackle challenging circumstances by providing increased family support. This is a scheme that allows eligible children to receive free early years education from the term after their second birthday.

How will my child benefit? Children like to explore the world around them, play with other children and have fun. Good early years education from a young age can help to boost child development and that is why we are offering families a chance to get a head start for their children and come and join our setting.

Will I have to take all the hours available? No, you can begin with a few hours each week for the first funded period and then build up to the number of hours over the year if you wish (totalling no more than 570 hours). You will however need to stick to the same number of hours each week over one funded period. 16

The SP5 Magazine

Would I have to stay with my child? To begin with you may wish to stay with your child for part of the first few sessions to help your child settle into the setting but as soon as they are confident they can be left in the capable hands of our experienced team.

Why Hale Pre-School? Hale Preschool continues with is successful and innovative partnership between its next door neighbour, Hale Primary School. Close cooperation between the two education settings sees the pre-schoolers having weekly play dates in the primary classrooms, lunching with the school children and accompanying the reception class on their weekly wellie walks through the forest. “All this serves as a fantastic preparation for those children who are starting school in September,” says the headteacher, Mrs McCusker. The ethos and philosophy of the preschool mirrors that of our own Early Years provision – a passionate belief in the value of learning through play. By the time the children arrive for their first day in September, they already feel very comfortable in the school environment, and that confidence shows in their learning behaviour.”

Hale Preschool’s idyllic New Forest setting, with ponies and cattle roaming freely on the green outside, already offers a unique learning experience for pre-schoolers. This has now been enhanced by the close working between Hale school and the preschool. “We wanted to help our children make a seamless transition to school,” said Jill Coles, the preschool supervisor. “This level of cooperation between the two settings takes all the fear away, and makes sure school feels like a safe happy place for the children.” Don’t forget to also check out Hale Pre-Schools Parent & Toddler group that operates every Thursday out of Hale Village Hall from 9.30-11.30am. For a limited time only Hale preschool is offering a week of free sessions to all new prospective children that wish to take advantage of these new initiatives. There are only a very limited number of places available from September 2014 at our unique and personal setting. For more information about the free session offer or to arrange for an induction visit you can contact the pre-school on....

Celebrity

In Season Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Ideal Home Show, Gregg Wallace is making sure he’s keeping the punters entertained in his ‘Gregg Wallace Restaurant’. We quizzed the MasterChef host about his love of food, and what he gets up to when he’s not facing a dinner plate.

G

regg Wallace is best known for co-hosting the MasterChef and Celebrity MasterChef series on the BBC, alongside fellow foodie John Torode. The pair have worked up an appetite for pushing chefs to their absolute extremes over the years, and their high-pressure challenges have produced equally spectacular and disastrous results. Of course, Wallace’s no-nonsense, gregarious approach to judging in the kitchen has made him a bit of a fans’ favourite. There must have been plenty of great moments from the series. What have been the best memories? “I think that aside from some fantastic dishes, what really stands out with MasterChef is the travelling we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy. We’ve been to some amazing places. Amongst

20

The SP5 Magazine

my favourites are Thailand and India, where there is such a strong food culture and yet so different to our own.” That said, the emergence of an incredibly rich, vibrant and varied culinary offering in Britain is something, undoubtedly, to be proud of. Does Gregg feel the diversity of food will continue to expand or have we reached a peak? “We are very fortunate in this country to have such a broad range of food available to us. In London, especially, it’s an incredible offering. I can only think of one comparable city, really, and that’s New York. We have such cultural diversity and that is expressed brilliantly in a huge number of eateries. What does surprise me, and it’s happened in the past five years or so, is that Asian food has become our takeaway or cheap lunch of choice. I think that fish and chips have gone and the noodles have taken over. I reckon

that will continue and I think we will take on more and more influences, especially I think the healthier cuisines.” Starting his life as a greengrocer, Wallace knows the ins and outs of healthy, fresh and seasonal produce. As we enter spring and summer, what are his tips for finding the best vegetables? “We are now at one of the most exciting times of the year for fresh produce, which you can pick up at the old-fashioned greengrocers. The first of the broad beans, the start of the runner beans and spring peas are all coming through. There’s the first of the Cornish new potatoes too, and the Jersey new potatoes are just around the corner. And, of course, the ultimate in luxury vegetables, asparagus!”

are purely an indulgence. They’re a present to ourselves and that’s why I love them. And when Britain was in the culinary wilderness of cuisine with the rest of Europe laughing at us, we were still world leaders in the big, thick, sticky sweet puddings. We do it very well.” Outside of talking about, and sampling, plenty of amazing food, how does Gregg escape the culinary world?

Aside from his love of vegetables, Wallace has another very well known food romance, perhaps even more deeply rooted.

“MasterChef takes up a lot of my life, but when I’m not doing that my favourite pastime, funnily enough, is fitness and gym work. I’m in the gym six days a week, sometimes twice a day. People don’t realise that I’m also a qualified rugby coach and I absolutely love my rugby. Another thing people don’t realise about me is I’m a very keen amateur historian, so my house is stacked full of reference books. All those things, and I love my children – I’m a single parent and I love spending time with them. It keeps me busy, and busy is good!”

“I do love puddings. Not desserts… desserts is a French word. In this country we have puddings, Sir.” With a huge grin across his face, he tells us, “I love them because they’re so unnecessary; they

The Better Life

May Day Foraging by Derek Thompson

T

he 1st of May usually means one thing in our house - a trip to the Obby Oss festival at Padstow, on Cornwall’s north coast. It’s generally a glorious day, especially when it doesn’t fall on a weekend or a bank holiday (less traffic). We like to get to Padstow early and soak up the atmosphere. There is drumming and singing, streets bedecked with greenery, and people wearing sprays of cowslips and other flowers. Some say it’s a half-remembered nature and fertility festival, but even if its origins lie in the 1800s it’s a great way to welcome in the summer. And after the winter we’ve had - and the spring too our garden needs all the help it can get. Mixed in with all the folklore is a tradition of our own - the annual Padstow crazy golf match in which, invariably: a) Anne will forget to write down her score and then introduce a new version of mathematics. b) I will play one or two epic holes yet somehow still end up losing by a wide margin. In keeping with our greener aspirations, a trip out is a perfect opportunity to do a bit

24

The SP5 Magazine

of foraging. Our first stop is a lay-by that has fresh mackerel on sale (top tip: always check the eyes). From there, with our trusty wild food guides stowed aboard, we head west a little, still hugging the north coast, to visit friends on the north coast who are blessed with both fields and patience. We don’t travel up country that often, so knowing more experienced foragers is a real bonus. Left to my own devices I can easily find wild garlic and nettles, but that’s not much of a meal. Successful (i.e. safe and bountiful) foraging requires knowledge and experience, as well permission from the landowner. Last time we ventured north, we managed to forage for cow parsley, chickweed and the aniseed flavoured sweet cicely. We thought we were doing brilliantly until our friends told us that they had created a variety of soil types and seeded them to encourage wild food. Even so, a find is a find. When we get home, while Anne cleans the fish (I can’t help it if I’m squeamish), I introduce the foraged leaves to a homegrown lettuce and usually we wrap the

mackerel in foil with butter and pop it in the oven. Once, in a spirit of adventure, I tried smoking mackerel indoors, following Alan Titchmarsh’s Complete Countryman (an encouraging gift from a neighbour). To be honest, it was a bit of a kerfuffle, what with salting the fish beforehand, lining the pan with foil, adding the smoking mixture; laying the fish on chopsticks, popping it in the pan and then covering it with a lid. Smoking fish is one talent I’ve yet to master properly, but if you haven’t put the lid on properly it’s also a great way to test your smoke alarm. A foraged salad has a surprising range of subtle and bitter tastes, while steamed chickweed really tastes like spinach. As summer finally reaches our garden, it is possible to forage there for wild garlic, nettles and dandelion leaves (yes, really). Sadly, though, in my experience, you can never find a wild strawberry when you want one.

Fordingbridge Festival - Saturday 19th July Now in its sixth year the Rotary organised Fordingbridge Summer Festival will this year take place at the recreation ground on Saturday 19th July 2014. Gates will be open to the public at 10.30am and our arena programme will commence at 11am. Children under 16 years will be admitted free whilst entry fees for adults will be £5 with seniors £4. Once again there will be a variety of attractions including many who will be attending the festival for the first time. We aim to provide variety with something of interest to visitors of all ages. These include traditional crafts, charity and commercial stalls, bands and lots of ‘have a go’ events such as bowling and archery. This year

26

we welcome for the first time the Pantasy Caribbean Steel Band who will also be running a children’s workshop. The horticultural and floral societies will once again stage their annual shows as part of this event and there will be a four hour arena display featuring obedience dogs, Liberty Flying Display and lots more. For children there will be bouncy castles, face painting, Mr Merlin and Okey Dokey the Dragon, Punch and Judy and Trigger the train amongst others. Again there will be displays of classic cars, vintage tractors and farming equipment. This year we are also inviting owners of historic military vehicles. Our programme ends with the now traditional duck race with

generous cash prizes to be won. Tickets will be on sale in Fordingbridge from 3rd May. Don’t miss out as there are usually very few tickets available for sale on the day. Every penny raised by this event is donated to various Rotary projects. Our main focus is to support local charities benefiting both the young and old in our community. Local schools and clubs for people of all ages benefit and we were particularly pleased to support the lighting project at the skate park. Our thanks go to Fordingbridge Town Council, our sponsors and supporters without which this event could not take place.

Bowling

Bowling has changed over the years

B

owling (opposed to 10 pin bowling), has had the reputation of being for the elderly, often called “Old Man’s Marbles”, but watching national and international matches on TV shows that the top players, as in most sports, are young and fit. Therefore it is a sport which can be played by anyone of any age, sex or ability. We now have young people enjoying the sport these days. It is also a good game for friends and partners to play together. At the moment, we are especially appealing for any would-be lady bowlers. A warm welcome awaits. Bowling has changed and modernised very much over the last few years, so we would like to encourage people to come along and try it, as nowadays ladies don’t have to wear silly school hats, blazers and pleated skirts (they can if they want to) but most prefer long or cropped leg trousers, a baseball hat is great for keeping the sun out of your eyes and an attractive club shirt completes the outfit. Modern white trainers are made especially with flat soles to keep the grass in good order. Bowling is a simple objective - nearest bowl(s) to the jack win, but to be able to play well needs concentration and practice. It is quite addictive because you think to yourself ‘Why can’t I bowl consistently?’ It’s more challenging than you think. It has been medically proven that bowling improves your general health and helps to strengthen the immune system due to giving your muscles and joints good exercise. Bowling is a good full-body motion, stretching the muscles and conditioning others. There are many people who are wheel chair bound and can still play using special wheelchairs with wide wheels.

30

The SP5 Magazine

During an average game you will: • Bend more than 40 times. • Walk approximately 1,260 metres • Swing your arm more than 40 times to deliver a bowl weighing more than three pounds. It is also the ideal sport for meeting new people, socialising and achieving new challenges. Downton Bowling Club was founded in the early 1980’s and is situated in the Leisure Center, Wick Lane. From the end of April until late September the green is open for ‘Roll-ups’ being friendly games between members or just a practice, also friendlies with other clubs, touring teams and games within the New Forest, Salisbury and Wiltshire leagues. Most importantly we have a Mixed Triples League which is mainly for new players to gain experience in a team of 3 ladies/1 man (or vice versa). Downton will have ‘Come and Try’ Days at the Bowling Club on 4th and 11th May at 2-4.30pm, if you want to Have a Go, there will be bowlers present ready to help you. Just turn up. Downton is a very cheerful, friendly club, who take their bowling seriously, but at the end of the day, if they don’t win – well there’s always another day! There is a joining fee of £15 for adults for the first year. We will have a stand at the Cuckoo Fair where you can chat to some of our bowlers.

History

What happened in... ...May 1979?

Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s first woman Prime Minister on 4th May 1979. She was dubbed The Iron Lady by a writer in the Soviet newspaper Red Star. This moniker was meant to be derogatory, but it proved anything but. The pinnacle of her time in office was when The Iron Lady ordered the Task Force to retake the Falklands after the islands had been invaded by Argentina. She resigned in 1992, having set a record as the longestserving Prime Minister of the 20th century. 1st: The newest section of the London Underground, the Jubilee Line, was opened, extending from Stanmore to Charing Cross. In 1999 it was further extended, in three stages, crossing the Thames at four points before terminating at Stratford.

8th: At about 1.30 pm a taxi driver on a rank opposite Woolworths in Manchester noticed smoke coming from the store and reported it to his office. By four o’clock the worst fire disaster since WWII had claimed ten lives. Fifty-three people were taken to hospital, including six firemen. Jeremy Thorpe, who had resigned as leader of the Liberal Party three years earlier, went on trial at the Old Bailey, accused of attempted murder. He was also accused, along with four other men, of conspiracy to commit murder. All four defendants were acquitted on 22nd of June that year. 12th: The Cup Final at Wembley had been unremarkable, with Arsenal’s two goals to Manchester

United’s nil. But just four minutes before the end of the match the score became 2-1; and with two minutes remaining it was 2-2. Just seconds before the full-time whistle the winning goal was scored by Arsenal. 21st: Elton John became the first Western rock star to perform behind the ‘iron curtain’, at a stadium in Leningrad. 24th: Thorpe Park, in Chertsey, Surrey, was opened to the public. It is now the country’s third most popular amusement park, after Alton Towers and Legoland, and boasts the fastest ride. The Stealth reaches 83.9 mph – in just two seconds! 25th: As American Airlines Flight 191 took off from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago its port side engine broke away from the wing. The aircraft rolled to the left and crashed in a field, killing all 271 people on board and two on the ground.
