The clocks have changed and before you know it, the Christmas holidays will soon be here. It's time to spruce up the house, shop 'til you drop, light the fire and sit back and relax with a good book... or magazine! What's that? You've run out of logs? Fear not because J. Steward Fencing and Forestry (p.35) and Higgins Tree Care (p.4) should have enough supplies if you order early. We have some top tips for decorating your festive home and looking after your Christmas tree too, plus, if you're wondering what to get the person who has everything, take a look at our pick of gadgets on page 36 or alternatively we think you'll see the funny side of our book review on page 44! Of course, in addition to some great articles we also have some great advertisers who make this magazine possible. Some of them have a special seasonal message for you on page 24 but from all our other advertisers and ourselves, have a fantastic Christmas!

TREE Recycling Great for the home and garden!

From tree....

H

iggins Tree Care are a well trusted local business working throughout Salisbury and the south west of England to conduct high quality tree surgery and hard landscaping services. Despite the current financial climate, they have continued to grow a thriving and successful business, upholding an excellent reputation with a large number of regular clients for several years. Higgins Tree Care has looked at reducing unnecessary waste by recycling as much of the chippings and lumber as possible. As a result, all chippings are recycled into mulch, enabling gardeners to increase control of weeds and thereby reducing garden maintenance. Lumber is converted into flooring, fencing and seasoned hardwood logs ideal for wood burners, Agas and open fires. Justin told us that they have enough logs to hopefully last

until January/February but that obviously depends on demand and how cold our winter turns out to be. He warned “there are alot of homes in the SP5 area with open fires and wood burners so we always advise residents to stock up early before the cold really sets in and supplies run low. The logs are our main priority at this time of year and come about from waste created from our tree work undertaken during the last 12 months. Like everyone else, we try to recycle wherever possible so it seems appropriate that we should make use of our own waste and use it for the benefit of the community.” Higgins Tree Care are fully insured and qualified in arboriculture offering both free advice and free no obligation quotes. Best friends Red and Major need a place to rest their paws Dogs Trust Salisbury Rehoming Appeal

J

o Blake, Supporter Relations Officer at Dogs Trust Salisbury, says:

“Red and Major are two Salukis who are looking for a home together as they are the best of friends. Red is 5 years old and likes the finer things in life - she genuinely believes she’s a lapdog, despite her size, and loves nothing more than a cuddle and a doze on her bed. Major is an 8 year old boy who is a bit more active, affectionate and enjoys running around outside, playing with his toys and convincing Red to go for walkies!

or call them on 01980 629634 to arrange to meet this bubby lass. Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year through its network of 18 Rehoming Centres nationwide and one in Dublin.

Red and Major would like an owner who is around most of the time as they really enjoy being around people and are very happy, affectionate dogs. They are a lovely pair and would make a great addition to any lucky home.” If you think you can offer Red and Major a new place to call home, then please visit Dogs Trust Salisbury at 45 Amesbury Road, Newton Tony, Wiltshire, SP4 0HW

Fantastic food and drink with a friendly welcome you can ‘BANK’ on!

The dream becomes a reality...

L

ast year Lloyds Bank decided to close their branch in Downton leaving Caroline and her husband Simon, who live in Downton, thinking what a wonderful idea it would be to open a coffee shop/café serving fantastic food and drink. Caroline’s passion has always been food and after discussing the idea with family, who thought it was a great plan, Penny, Simon’s sister and her husband Chris, also decided to join the venture. The building was in a fairly run down state so they set about the refurbishment earlier this year whilst learning as much as possible about the catering business. Caroline had a little previous experience having catered for some local private parties and also helping to run the Primary School’s food stall each year at the Cuckoo Fair. Apart from that it was in at the deep end. The first obstacle was how to master the coffee machine and learn as

12 | The SP5 Magazine

much as possible about coffee. It proved to be a fascinating world with different beans from all over the world and they wanted to offer a quality product that people would want to come back for. After much research a bean was settled on which is ethically sourced, organic coffee, 100% Arabica from Papa New Guinea supplied by a local company Caffé Delizia from Fordingbridge. Next - how to recruit staff. The decision was to put up a sign in the window now that the refurbishment was nearly complete but after three days it had to be taken down because there were so many applications. Eventually after reading through all the CV’s and inviting people for interviews, a small team passionate about food, coffee and service was recruited. A barista was hired to train everyone and after a lot of coffee grinding, milk frothing and tasting everyone eventually felt comfortable with making a coffee. There is however an ongoing programme of training

aimed at improving everyone’s skills and the next one is on Latte art. The very small kitchen meant that Caroline had to devise a menu that provided succulent food but didn’t require huge preparation. This has been done by providing croissant and pastries in the morning including a Portuguese pastel de nata, which is a custard tart and guaranteed to make you come back for more! There are pre-prepared Paninis, baguettes and sandwiches made to order, bacon ciabatta rolls baked by the New Forest Bakery with the bacon supplied by the butcher in the village, griddled chicken tikka wraps, tortilla, quiche, salad, fantastic home made soup, lovely homemade cakes, fantastic Long Critchel Fruit Bread and much more. New dishes are added most days. The aim is to provide a fun service, with quality products sourcing as much locally as possible and exceeding customer’s expectations. Winter Safety

Watch out for ponies at night

F

orest organisations are urging people to drive carefully through the New Forest this winter. Nigel Matthews, Community and Visitor Services Manager at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: 'This year has got off to a good start. The number of animal accidents across the Open Forest by the end of June was only 40, compared to 64 in the same period last year. 'However, there is usually a rise in accidents over the winter. A lot of ponies wear reflective collars but many don't, so drivers should look out for dark-coloured ponies, which are often more difficult to see. Ponies have no road sense so it is up to the driver to be extra cautious.' Head Agister Jonathan Gerrelli, who works for the Verderers said: 'It is the law to report all accidents IT’S THE LAW: Report all accidents involving a pony, cow, donkey, dog, pig or sheep to the Police as soon as possible, and within 24 hours.

as soon as possible, or within 24 hours. However over 30 accidents were not reported last year, not only is this distressing for the injured animal, but also for the Agisters, who work long hours in often difficult circumstances.'

If you witness an accident: If you witness or are involved in an accident involving a pony, donkey, cow, pig or sheep, call the Police (999 for an emergency or 101 if it's not an emergency).

Be prepared: Animal accident hotline cards are available from garages and Local Information Points across the New Forest. The hotline cards tell you who to call if you see sick, injured or distressed animals. To stock the cards contact the New Forest National Park Authority at enquiries@newforestnpa.gov.uk.

New Forest Animal Emergency Hotlines

Tips for driving safely • Be ready to stop - ponies may step out even when they've seen you approaching •

Drive slowly, especially at night and when other cars are approaching with their headlights on

• Give animals grazing by the side of the road a wide berth •

Take extra care when there are animals on the verges on both sides of the road - they may cross to join their friends.

Start your journey earlier so you don't have to hurry.

Top tips for

Christmas Decorations Have your festive decorations lost their sparkle? Katherine Sorrell has some ideas to bring back your home’s Christmas cheer

Choose a theme Choosing a theme brings unity to the overall look. It should suit your house and the way your family celebrates the festive season, whether laid-back and relaxed, sophisticated or formal. For some, that might mean a traditional, living fir tree and a colour theme of red, green and gold. For others, a kitsch fake tree with fluorescent ornaments; or perhaps a minimal, modern style with pure silver and glass. Dress the tree Start by winding it with lights, making sure they’re evenly distributed. Next, drape your garlands, again aiming for evenness and an impression of generosity without overloading the tree. On small or slim trees, use slender garlands; on larger trees use heavier, fancier garlands. Last, hang your ornaments, with the largest first, filling in around them with smaller ones. Place some nearer the trunk for a sense of depth and interest. Hang a wreath For some, the making of a family wreath using foraged leaves, flowers, seeds, nuts and fruit is a significant part of the holiday season. Alternatively, ready-made examples are available in any style imaginable, from classic to contemporary, heart-shaped or circular, small or large, utterly simple or lavish and complex. Make some decorations Home-made Christmas decorations can be as elaborate or simple as you wish. Multi-coloured paper chains are the ultimate in family favourites, as are cutwork paper stars and clove-studded oranges. How about pom pom snowmen, peg-doll angels or glitter-covered pine cones? Or mini stocking shapes cut out of felt and ginger biscuits to hang from the tree? It’s all great fun and will create happy memories for years to come. Wrap your presents Transform present-wrapping from a chore to a pleasure by taking a little extra time and trouble. When they’re piled under the tree they will look so much better if they’re colour-coordinated and criss-crossed with ribbons and bows. Even brown paper or newsprint looks lovely

if adorned with a home-made label, while sequins, feathers, glitter, stamped designs and wired beads can all provide additional allure. Sort out your cards It pays to establish a system as soon as the cards start arriving. Clear a shelf or two, and arrange them close together, large at the back and small at the front, in neat rows. Smaller cards can be tucked around a mirror or picture frame. An alternative is to staple them to ribbons (weighted by a bauble or pine cone) to hang in rows from a mantelpiece or along the side of the staircase. Create displays Nothing says Christmas like poinsettias in pots, scented candles on the mantelpiece and ivy, holly and mistletoe draped over every available surface. Now’s the time to dig out that special table runner and your best crockery, glassware and cutlery for an eye-catching table display, finished off with a dish, tray or platter filled with greenery, candles and other festive decorations.

Looking after your tree Buy a tree that’s as fresh as possible. As soon as possible, cut half an inch off the bottom of the trunk, to help it absorb water. Trim away lowdown or interior branches that you don’t need. Put the tree in a stand that can hold plenty of water, and never let it run out. Avoid standing the tree in a sunny window or near a radiator.

reason and often it’s the larger breeds - Dobermans, German Shepherds and Staffordshire Bull Terriers - resulting in some being demonised in the public mind. But are these dogs really to blame and can a bad dog ever become good?

H

ardly a week goes by without a gruesome news report about a child being bitten by a dog in an apparently unprovoked attack. Sometimes it’s a family pet who has “turned” for some unknown

natural nutrition

28 | The SP5 Magazine

Dog behaviourist Mike Mullan, who is President of the UK Registry for Canine Behaviour and has more than 50 years working with the animals, is adamant that there’s no such thing as a bad dog - only bad owners. He says: “The only exception to that rule is dogs that are taught to fight - you’re never going to cure that. But dog behaviour problems can be corrected with kind, positive training, nothing harsh or negative as this only makes the dog think it has done something wrong. People don’t put the work into dogs - they make all the mistakes like letting the puppy get on the sofa and the next thing it’s fully grown and covering the sofa in mud and hair. The dog is what you teach it. Too many people expect dogs to be trained by nobody and anybody because they’re a working breed and they think they come like that!

But if you don’t put the effort in you’re not going to get the results.” Mike, who is also vice president of the Doberman Club, says he teaches his dogs to respect him and he respects them. He has had enormous success with thousands of dogs over the years and believes this is down to a kind but disciplined approach without the need to resourse to physical force. He says: “There is never a reason to smack a dog - you don’t need to use any brute force. Mainly you use your voice, your tone of voice, the quietness, and at the same time use your hands. Also your facial expression is important as dogs are very good at reading this. I can sound angry but if I am smiling my dogs know I’m not really cross. They can read your face and hand gestures but your voice is the most important, as is the use of different tones to call and command.” Mike says it was the late and highly-respected trainer Roy Hunter who taught him the importance of the voice in dog training. Out walking his Doberman Barbie with Roy, Mike admits to screaming at the top of his voice when his pet refused to come back when he called. He recalls: “Roy turned to me and said, ‘I didn’t know Barbie was deaf.’ He told me to keep my

hands in my pocket and use a very quiet tone to call her back. Of course it worked and she complied. When I had screamed at her she didn’t know what she had done wrong. What we’ve got to remember is that she can hear you at 400 yards without having to raise your voice. Their hearing is brilliant. The more you shout at them the less they’ll come back. When a dog’s close to you, you just need to whisper to them and you’ll see their ears prick up and their heads go to one side because they’re paying attention. It’s much easier to get them to comply if you whisper.” Mike is only too well aware of the poor image some breeds have but having worked with hundreds of Dobermans, German Shepherds and Staffies over the years believes the solution is simply better training for dog owners. He wants to see an eight-week training course in place for all owners and each animal micro-chipped by law. Mike adds: “It’s very unfair to blame the dog, it’s always the people who own the dog. If there was a law that owners had to be licensed and trained, most of the people who want these pitbull types wouldn’t bother to put the work in and society would be a safer place. All those people want is a weapon and it’s the poor old dog that suffers.”

Tech Review

What do you buy the person who has

EVERYTHING? Buying Christmas presents for gadget fans can be difficult, because they don’t tend to wait for special occasions to splash out - but before you reach for the stand-by option of perfume or socks, it’s worth thinking laterally. The answer to the question “what do you buy for the person who has everything?” is often “accessories”.

T

his doesn’t necessarily mean brightly coloured cases or novelty items that plug into laptops’ USB ports, although of course there are plenty of those to choose from; novelty USB items are this decade’s equivalent of hilarious musical socks, and best avoided. In many cases accessories can make gadgets even more useful. Take the Eye-Fi Connect memory card, for example: it’s a camera memory card with built-in WiFi, so it turns any camera into a connected one for instant uploading. It’s not as expensive as you might expect - at the time of writing a 4GB Eye-Fi Connect X2 is £32.25 on Amazon - and it will genuinely delight any camera fan. Just make sure it’ll fit: Eye-Fi cards are designed to fit in SDHC slots, which you’ll find in most but not all modern cameras. Another camera favourite is the Gorillapod, an innovative camera tripod that can hang on to almost anything. It’s available for everything from smartphones to enormous digital SLRs, and prices start at around £10. Unlike traditional tripods it doesn’t need to sit on the ground: you can wrap it around lampposts and tree branches, hang it from tables or put it on your head.

36 | The SP5 Magazine

There are no shortage of useful accessories for iPads, and one of the best is Logitech’s Ultrathin Keyboard (around £75), which essentially turns an iPad into a small laptop. If you’d rather spend a little less, there are tablet styluses for writing notes and drawing for as little as £6.30 (Griffin’s Apple iPad Stylus), rising to around £22 for the Pogo Sketch Pro. Such styluses work not just on iPads, but any touchscreen device including rival tablets and smartphones. As you’ve probably noticed in the shop, Apple owners are particularly well served by accessories: you can’t wander round the supermarket without tripping over a pile of iPhone alarm

clocks and speaker docks. Such items make great presents, but be careful which ones you buy: with the arrival of the iPhone 5 in September, Apple dumped its existing dock connector in favour of a smaller connector called Lightning. Accessories designed for the iPhone 4 and earlier will still work, but they’ll need an expensive adapter for the iPhone 5, updated iPods and updated iPads - and in some cases the cost of the adapter may be more than the cost of the accessory. It’s definitely worth checking which version the person has before spending any money - advice that also applies to very useful multi-device chargers such as the Bluelounge Refresh (£69.99), which can charge multiple gadgets simultaneously. If you’re still stuck for ideas, there’s always the famous answer to the present for someone who has everything: a box for them to put it all in. Rather than a box we’d recommend a bag, and we particularly like the Unit Portables bags (£59.99 from Muazo. co.uk): while they’re designed to accommodate gadgets, chargers and their accessories, they’re smart, stylish and available in a range of eye-catching colours.

Bassets sponsors Great Amesbury Duck Race 2012 Bassets’ support of the local community this year has continued with their involvement in the third “Great Amesbury Duck Race”. Bassets sponsored the second race for the medium sized ducks which they sold to local businesses and private individuals for £10 each. The river was fast flowing which led to the race finishing in record time with no ducks going astray. The Winner, receiving a pair of Wessex Raceway GoKarting tickets, was Chris Jolly of MU Law based in Warminster and Westbury, taking first place with his duck, ‘Ducktagnan’. Second place was taken by Frank Thompson of the Rotary Club of Salisbury with his duck ‘Argyle’, who was delighted with his Scottish style Bassets Hamper. And finally, Richard Winder of local firm Moores Chartered Surveyors took third place

BASSETS OFFERS HELP TO THE COMMUNITY Bassets Sales & Lettings are looking for worthwhile community projects or activities to help fund or sponsor, within Salisbury, Amesbury, Fordingbridge and their surrounding villages. Although the budgets themselves are relatively small, Bassets would be delighted to hear from anyone about a local community related project or activity. Here are a few examples of the support Bassets already shows to the community: they sponsor the Victoria Players and the Choral Society in Fordingbridge. In Salisbury, Bassets plays an active part in the Rotary Club of Salisbury sponsoring various school

activities and competitions as well as supporting the Riverbourne Community Farm as Founder Sponsors. And finally in Amesbury, they support charities such as the Dogs Trust and raise money at local events such as the Amesbury and Durrington Shows and the Great Amesbury Duck Race. All three offices support The Trussell Trust and Food Bank on an ongoing basis. You can also take a look at the Bassets’ Community facebook page for more examples.

Managing Director David Clayton explains: “Each office has a Community Budget which is to be spent specifically on the local communities within which we live and work. We are inviting applications from any community related group, who may need assistance during 2013”. Please help Bassets to make a difference in your community by emailing Chloe at chloe. kemery@bassets.co.uk with information about the project or activity.

Tips for a pet-safe Christmas

H

ampton Park Vets love our pets just as much as we do and have kindly shared with us some helpful advice for safely surviving the Christmas period with our four-legged friends. "Pets sometimes take a fancy to Christmas decorations – tinsel, for example, can cause serious intestinal injuries if ingested, and broken glass baubles can cause foot injuries. Wherever possible, pets should be kept away from Christmas trees and decorations, festive plants, presents, batteries, foods and snacks. Christmas trees including those of the fir, pine and spruce

species all belong to the Pinaceae family. They are considered to be of low toxicity, but ingestion may cause a mild gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and diarrhoea). However ingestion of plant material could cause a mechanical obstruction if a large amount is ingested including physical injury from sharp needles. This season often brings a lot of poisoning emergencies. Chocolate poisoning is a common enquiry at this time of the year. The severity of

poisoning depends principally on two things, obviously the amount of chocolate ingested but also the type of chocolate (i.e. milk or dark). The amount of theobromine (a methylxanthine similar to caffeine) in milk and dark chocolate differs considerably, which is reflected in the toxic dose for dogs. Chocolate is also toxic to other species (for example cats, rodents, rabbits etc) but there is currently insufficient data available to determine a toxic dose. The common effects seen in chocolate poisoning are vomiting and diarrhea (and coupled with the fact that theobromine is a diuretic, animals may become severely

dehydrated). Theobromine also directly stimulates both the heart muscle and the nervous system, and therefore some animals may become hyperactive and develop hyperthermia, high blood pressure and often a dangerously high heart rate. Stiff Muscles, tremors and convulsions may also be observed in some extreme cases." Hopefully all of the above situations can be avoided with a little bit of care and thought, but if you do require

emergency vetinerary assistance over the holidays, call your nearest branch of Hampton Park Vets who will be only too happy to help. Hampton Park Vets (Downton) 01725 511492 Hampton Park Vets (Bishopdown Farm, Salisbury) 01722 416245 8 www.hamptonparkvets.co.uk

Book Review

Christmas Goes Crackers If you’re fed up with your Uncle Jack’s unfunny one-liners this Christmas, why not retreat to a quiet corner and find a bit of comic relief away from the relatives. From classic cats to depressed rabbits, we have enough Christmas cheer to keep you laughing well into the New Year.

The Far Side Gallery 1 By Gary Larson If there’s any doubt that Gary Larson is some kind of comic genius, it was dispelled when they built a museum in San Francisco and filled it with his cartoons. Seeing the world through Larson’s eyes is viewing it through a pair of Dame Edna-style glasses. He finds the funny in the ordinary and I guarantee you’ll never look at cows and chickens in quite the same way again. The Far Side books can be passed from grandparents to parents to children and all will be equally tickled by Larson’s humour.

Simon’s Cat Vs. The World! Simon Tofield Not since Garfield has a cartoon cat so captured the nation’s heart. Simon’s cat spends his days terrorising and tormenting his long-suffering owner but this time, it’s the puss that’s under threat. With a new kitten on the scene, Simon’s Cat is facing a power-struggle of a magnitude he’s never known before. Forget fighting dead flies…this

time it’s war. Life-long cat fan Tofield has had years of feline experience, and it shows. The new cartoons are full of pure moggy magic.

The Best of “Punch” Cartoons. Helen Walasek, Prion Books Limited ‘Punch’ magazine may have closed its doors in 2002 but its legendary status lives on. This is the biggest collection of Punch cartoons ever and it’s one to be savoured. It’s essential reading for all fans of humour and satire, with no holds barred and nowhere safe to hide. The selection was made by Helen Walasek of the Punch Cartoon Library and it’s definitely to be treasured. With 600 of the best to flick through, you’d better avoid doing it in one sitting, or you might end up Punch drunk.

The Best of Matt 2012 Matthew Pritchett Looking back over the last twelve months, you would expect cartoons on the

Olympics, the Diamond Jubilee, the recession and everything else in-between. This multi award-winning cartoonist captures the spirit of the nation in his own inimitable way. It’s a subtle mixture of wit and satire that will have you chuckling into your pudding. His almost haphazard drawing style is quirky and suggestive, making you feel like he’s capturing British life on the fly. A brilliant way to look back over the year.

The Book of Bunny Suicides. Andy Riley Poor bunny. Here we are, taking pleasure in his impending pain. It sounds terribly fiendish and it’s definitely not for Peter Rabbit fans but Riley’s cartoons somehow manage to maintain a touch of innocence in the macabre. The premise is simple and yet Bunny’s plans to end his days become more and more elaborate and ingenious as the book goes on. It brings new meaning to the phrase ‘not a happy bunny’. I guarantee that you’ll laugh out loud.

Special Edition

Garfield Going for Gold Jim Davis

Timed to coincide with London 2012, this special edition is one of the classic sports strips. He may have been around since the 70s but Davis’ furry anti-hero hasn’t grown out of taunting his owner with violence towards his canine counterpart, Odie and of laziness, gluttony, sarcasm and a hatred of Mondays. You gotta love a cat like that.

Salisbury Spooks!

I

nternationally best selling author Cornelia Funke has chosen an unusual location for the setting of her latest book, GHOST KNIGHT… and it’s right here in Wiltshire. Salisbury Cathedral (and the Cathedral School) were the source of inspiration for her ghostly tale, that features the Knight Longespee (whose tomb can be found in the Cathedral today) and his wife Ela of Salisbury, a quest that involves two modern day friends Jon and Ella, some malevolent ghosts, a feud and a prophecy. Cornelia says: "I still remember how I first stepped into the Cathedral and knew immediately that I would

never forget this building and that it kept stories and magic aplenty between it's walls. This cathedral holds so many things, such peace and tranquility, memories of the dead and the living, reminders of so many layers of our past and all the whispered prayers that talked of human pain and love.....quite a storm for a storyteller!” We are delighted that Cornelia has offered us a signed copy of Ghost Knight to give away to one of our lucky readers. To enter the draw all you need to do is tell us the name of the last book you read, followed by your name, address and daytime telephone number. Send your entry on a postcard to:Red Fox Publishing Ltd, Forge House, The Headlands, Downton, Salisbury, Wilts, SP5 3HP or email debbie@redfoxpublishing.co.uk with the subject 'BOOK COMPETITION'.
