FROM THE

PRINCIPAL

As I get older, each year seems to move faster. I am quite confident that this is the case for any adult reading this section. Yet, this publication is a moment in history that needs to be captured and celebrated as it represents the culmination of the 2023 Academic Year. This document provides different moments for each of us, and I hope you move through the pages with smiles, laughter and great memories. With that in mind, 2023 has provided me with some incredible moments.

This is a part of what makes Redeemer special. It is this strength that binds us, and it allows us to protect the beautiful community that we have here at the College.

Students

The essence of why we are here. Redeemer is an educational establishment committed to the growth of our learners. We want the best for each of them and to provide every chance of the future they are chasing.

Staff

What an incredible piece of theatre magic. I didn’t expect it, nor did I understand the hard work and effort of the team behind it. It brought our car to life, and I will always remember the gasps from the audience at that moment.

I have stated on numerous occasions that we have an incredible team here at Redeemer. Each of them knows the trials of 2023 and the times where they have had to selflessly push forward to protect our culture. I am grateful for every effort and attempt that they have made in the relentless pursuit of student happiness and improvement.

Parents

The first time Chitty moved on stage

Once the scaffolding had gone, the tape had been removed and the keys were exchanged, we walked through the new building with a sense of awe and wonder. It was a moment in Redeemer’s history, where our learning spaces truly demonstrated a commitment to contemporary learning and student agency.

Blankets on the Chapel Green

The staff decided that providing picnic blankets for our students was a worthy cause. The day they arrived and were handed to a group of students is a personal highlight. From a distance I could see the joy in their faces. The blankets were a request from our students, we merely agreed to it. Yet, this small example of partnership epitomises what I love about Redeemer. Each of those moments contributes to the environment we have built at Redeemer. Those who have come before us and those who will follow, have a responsibility to notice these moments and capture their essence. During the year, I lead a devotion for the College that focused on the strength of rope. One rope consists of thousands of fibres, hundreds of strings and tens of strands. While the whole rope is strong and powerful, it is a combination of many parts. In the devotion, I reflected on the following bible verse: “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. The body of Christ, or the people that are the whole of humanity, are a team. The body is not supported by one person, but by all of us. We are one, we are strongest working together in unity. Teamwork is the key to living life in harmony, so that we can do God's will.” 1 Corinthians 12:14

2 • Principal

Once again, we thank you for your trust. Education should be a partnership. Working together is clearly the best support structure for children. It is a privilege to be able to contribute, and support our learners. This positivity should be ever present in our community. Finally, on a personal note, I thank you for all the kind words, emails, calls and smiles received from the Redeemer community. Many will know this was my first year leading a school as the Acting Principal. To be blunt, the people who make Redeemer are what made it possible. In some way, literally thousands of people have contributed to the person that I have been and the person I will continue to be as we move forward. This is not lost on me, and it feels appropriate that Reflections 2023 is the right place for me to capture that sentiment. Thank you for the year! God bless.

Mr Richard Cornish Acting Principal

DEAN OF

FAITH

Presence and faithfulness are two attributes of our loving, Heavenly Father that have been a gift this year.

God is present in our lives, and He is faithful all the time. There is no doubt that we have experienced challenges as a community throughout this year; despite this, God has been present here in this place and in the people of Redeemer. God is rebuilding our College in some amazing ways, and he will continue to do this. “I have loved you with an everlasting love. I have drawn you with loving-kindness, I will build you up again and you will be rebuilt.” Jeremiah 31:3 In Genesis, when God speaks to Abraham, He says the Israelites are blessed to be a blessing. We are blessed to be a blessing. This is something that is evident throughout the Redeemer community. God’s presence is communicated through the loving actions of staff and students. They bless each other through kindness, friendship, and deep care. The way staff support the students and how the students look out for each other is testament to God’s love being present and alive. Emily in Year 8 explained it well, saying, “The students at Redeemer have shown their faith and love by taking action, helping people and showing respect towards each other. Redeemer is a place where people can feel and experience God because of how close we are together and to God through love”. Avah (Year 8) described Redeemer as a “Christ-led school where students feel appreciated”. It has been a privilege to be the Dean of Faith for Semester 2 of 2023. Throughout this time, we sought to grow the worship life at Redeemer. We spent time reflecting on why we worship and have learnt more about how God’s presence comes to us through worship. Throughout the year, young people across many year levels have blessed their peers by leading Devotions and Chapel services. Dorothy, a Year 8 student, shared that students have “shown their faith this year by standing up, being brave and leading Chapel.”

In the Senior School, the Faith & Service Committee met throughout the year to discuss how we could further grow our faith life. The Worship Band has also started-up again! What a delight it has been to see these students leading the worship experiences for their peers and inviting others into God’s presence through music. We have also nurtured the important connection between Our Saviour Lutheran Church and Redeemer. It has been incredible to see many staff contribute in different ways, such as making sandwiches, advocating for the Helping Hands ministry, and supporting the AV team. As staff, we came together regularly in prayer and spent time together learning about faith. We continue to maintain our focus on being a community that is Christ-led and where our hope is firmly placed in Jesus Christ through both the obvious and less obvious ways. As we reflect on the past year, I am so grateful that God is truly present here with us. I am also very grateful that we have a God who knows us completely, including all our flaws, and despite this He still loves us unconditionally and with an everlasting love. Even with our best efforts we can never earn God’s love and forgiveness. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not by works, lest any man should boast” Ephesians 2:8-9 I pray that you can be encouraged by God’s grace, His faithfulness and be deeply aware of the love he has for every single one of you.

Mrs Kristy-Anna Lopez Dean of Faith

In the Junior School, there have also been opportunities for students to learn about the Bible through songs, stories, activities and craft. A significant tradition early each year is for the Prep students to receive their very own Bibles during a Worship service. Towards the second half of the year, a team of dedicated Year 6 students helped to organise weekly faith meetings for younger students.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE

INNOVATION HUB

In February 2022, the Innovation Hub project commenced with preparation of the site. The demolition of SH and SM Blocks seemed to happen in the blink of an eye, with staff and students keen to have a peek inside the new building as we watched the progress of the construction. In June 2023, the building was officially complete, and our Years 5 and 6 students were very excited to have the privilege of being the first to use the wonderful new learning space for the final 2 weeks of Term 2. The Innovation Hub is a space that promotes design thinking, creativity, curiosity and entrepreneurship. Each of these skills are in high demand across the world. Providing the ability to contribute on a global scale is a target that we are proudly walking towards. This building is an incredible addition to our learning spaces for the students and staff and marks the start of the next phase in the Strategic Plan of Redeemer Lutheran College. The work completed by staff and students has the potential to influence the lives of many people going forward.

FROM THE

COLLEGE CAPTAINS 2023 gave us challenges, but also brought connection, friendship and fulfilment. Our goal this year was ‘growth through empowerment’; we wanted to be a catalyst in other’s lives to help them grow. Our aim was to inspire this growth in students' personal lives, spiritual connection, community, and in co-curricular endeavours. As Captains, we realised we didn’t always have the direct capacity to achieve this, but we did understand we could support this through culture. In our role this year, we tried to make a difference in the community members’ lives by making our connections with them meaningful. We’ve focused on delivering devotions and Assemblies that are engaging and learning-focused. But, more importantly, we wanted those spaces to be fun. For us, fun means a time when we can be ourselves and connect with others. On the other hand, in our everyday demeanour, our focus was being relational rather than formal. A saying we learnt from our leadership camp was ‘people over projects’, and we tried to embody that in all we did and continue to do. This role for us has been about knowing people, and their individuality. Each person contributes somewhere in the College community, and we all are so different. Our God-given gifts and talents are still all so important, despite their differences. In fact, that was our big takeaway for the year. Everyone is different, and we should find joy in that. Sometimes our differences separate each other, but we truly believe under God we can embrace both our community and our individuality. With all of those goals, achievements and connections in mind, it’s important to thank the people who made our Redeemer experience possible. We’ve come to realise that our identities as leaders of this vibrant community have been deeply shaped

by role models, including teachers who have fostered and selflessly cared for our unique stories at Redeemer. Of course, that starts where our learning starts, at Junior School. To everyone who makes the Junior School happen, thank you for laying the foundation of values, learning and skills that we now use every day. To all Support Staff, thank you for your tireless efforts. Looking back, we certainly didn't show our gratitude. We truly do appreciate all the work you do behind the scenes. A special shout out to the Grounds Staff attending a school that looks as beautiful as ours does, truly makes a difference. To the Senior School staff, thank you for giving us every opportunity to achieve highly. You sacrificed time, resources, and many first breaks to support our learning. And for every teacher, thank you for being a friend. Throughout this journey, you’ve been there to support us in our weak times, celebrate with us in our positive times, and have truly gone above and beyond your job descriptions. Finally, to our leadership team, thank you for never giving up on us. We are so privileged to have a school with hardworking and dedicated staff like yourselves. It’s impossible to imagine Redeemer without you. To embody the selfless service of our teachers, we found a bible verse we’d like to share: “My command is this: Love each as I have loved you.” John 15:12 No one’s perfect, and we were far from perfect Captains, but having supportive people around you makes things easier. If we could leave one message with you all, it would be to uphold the innate Redeemer culture of loving others.

HEAD OF

LAVARACK Contribution Each year in Lavarack House we focus on a particular theme. The 2023 theme was simply ‘Contribution’. A community is built on the contribution of its members, and students were challenged to identify ways that they could contribute positively, not only to Lavarack House, but the entire Redeemer community. The Bible verse that accompanied this theme was 1 Corinthians 12:14 , “Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.” The verse further reiterates the fact that we all have different contributions to make, as our gifts and talents lie in different areas. God intended it to be this way, so that we could all contribute individually to the greater good of the entire community. The 2023 theme also tied in with the further development of our ‘Lavarack Legacies’, the overarching values that inform our behaviour as members of Lavarack House, courage, service and effort. Going ‘back to back’ for the House Spirit Award was a large focus for Lavarack House and its student leaders this year. This involved focusing on the things that we could control, turning up to carnivals, cheering and engaging with the carnival theme. Following the process does not always allow you to achieve the desired final result, but I am pleased to say, on this occasion it did. Lavarack placed first in House Spirit in all three carnivals this year, guaranteeing that the House Spirit Award is returned to the mighty red army for another year.

The cheering and participation across all three carnivals was the best I’ve seen in my time at Redeemer and this is largely due to the inspirational leadership of the House Captains and Senior Students. I remember looking into the Scurr Oval grandstand at one point during the Athletics Carnival and noticing there was no one sitting in the Lavarack section. I quickly realised that this was because every single ‘Lavarackian’ was participating in the 200m event - students were putting into action our contribution focus. Pavement Art, RecyKle and the Interhouse Trivia Challenge were also events where students had the opportunity to contribute. Our artists stepped up to the plate for Pavement Art, creating some quality designs, and a willing group of Senior Students, in collaboration with an ageing Mr Jeffes, got their cycling kit on for the RecyKle event. A new InterHome Group competition arose this year, with some great creativity and initiative being shown by students and teachers alike. ‘Better than Mac’ occured during extended Home Group time most weeks, where a number of students challenged themselves in the academic arena against our esteemed LO4 leader and mathematician, Mr MacDonald. In addition to these events, students have also contributed to developing and leading devotions at House Assembly. In closing, I would like to thank all Lavarack students who contributed to the House community in 2023 and lived out the Lavarack Legacies through their everyday actions. I’d particularly like to thank the House Captains, Charlotte Gross and Matthew Rostron, who have created their own unique legacy. A legacy of contribution, participation and leading by actions. Many Lavarack students took up the challenge of contribution this year and not only our House community, but the entire Redeemer community are in a better position because of this. I am proud to say that the 2023 Lavarack student group have definitely left the ‘red shirt’ in a better place.

LAVARACK HOUSE CAPTAINS

This year as Lavarack Captains our main goal was to have everyone contribute something, whether that was calling out war cries or participating in events. We focused a lot of our efforts towards encouraging people to step out of their comfort zone and keep building our strong spirit and community in all the Interhouse Carnivals and House activities. We started the year strong, with all of Lavarack dressing up as pirates for the Swimming Carnival, which set a great mood for the event. Lavarack took over the day with strong and loud war cries, which couldn’t be beaten. The sense of excitement and community Lavarack brought to the day was comforting for us; from there, we knew Lavarack would do amazingly this year. This was only reinforced when we won the House Spirit Award. The next carnival was Cross Country - also known as the Lavarack Rodeo! Lavarack House came dressed as cowboys and cowgirls, and rode their “horses” around the track. The unity of the House at the Cross Country Carnival was stronger than ever, and the team encouragement and willingness to give everything a go really shone through. Lavarack had a strong team of students, who gave their all for the tug-of-war, and we took out the win with everyone playing a part. On the day, Lavarack had the spirit that no one else had, and took home a second win when awarded the House Spirit Award, yet again. The Athletics Carnival took place over two long days, and this is when it really sunk in for the Year 12s that this would be our last House Carnival. Lavarack started the carnival strong with everyone cheering and getting involved with the war cries, including possibly the longest ever “we got the spirit, how about you” chant

with the other Houses. Every person in Lavarack ran the 200 metre race and this alone made the efforts all worth it and Lavarack won the House Spirit Award once again, making it three from three! Although we didn’t place First for Pavement Art or RecyKle, to see the amazing work that Lavarack students were able to create was all we wanted. The three Lavarack teams produced art that envisioned “Footprints”, and they all took a different point-of-view. For RecyKle, we decided to let anyone who was interested participate in the team, rather than choosing the strongest cyclists. This was an opportunity for Year 11’s to step up rather than just having a team of Year 12’s. This year we learned that Lavarack has a spirit that no other House has, and people want to get involved and contribute. The culture that we have built is overwhelming and we are so honoured to have the best House, along with an amazing Head of House, Mr Jeffes, who has helped support us with any ideas, with war cries, House Assemblies and overall Lavarack spirit. This year we learned to lead in our own way. Good luck to future Lavarack Captains and don’t stress about this experience, because it can make your last year so special.

MANSFIELD

Positive Contributions. Giving Selflessly. Gratitude.

These have been the three themes that the Mansfield community have used to guide their efforts this year, and what a year it has been! As a community, we have continued to grow closer and develop a culture of care and compassion for each other. In 2023, Mansfield House has also continued to be led by our ‘Mansfield Mantras’ of Positivity, Participation, Perseverance and Pride. Over the course of the year, Mansfield students participated in all Interhouse Carnivals, demonstrating these guiding principles. With the focus on ‘Positive Contributions’ and ‘Giving Selflessly’, it was fantastic to see attendance at all carnivals increase from previous years. The House events also allowed the opportunity for Mansfield students to demonstrate their dedication to growing House Spirit through war-cries and consistent cheering for their fellow Housemates. Their positive efforts resulted in two Second place finishes in the much-coveted House Spirit Award, which Mansfield won outright in 2022. Mansfield students brought their competitive spirits to our House events, placing Second in the Swimming, CrossCountry and Athletics Carnivals. Pavement Art was where Mansfield’s creative students shone, bringing home a First place overall, and highlighting the versatility of the many gifts and talents our students from Mansfield possess. Each carnival had a unique theme providing students with the chance to exhibit their ingenuity and artistic talents in

making props, costumes, and signs. With themes ranging from ‘The Wild West’ to ‘Pirates and Mermaids’ and ‘Movie Characters’, there were some incredible displays thanks to the efforts of Mansfield students volunteering their time to boosting House Spirit and morale. This year’s Mansfield House Captains, Lilly Parkes and Angelo Szetu, have mentored and encouraged fellow students and contributed to developing the positive culture within the House. We thank them for their significant effort and commitment to their roles throughout the year and wish them all the very best for their future endeavours. To our departing Year 12 Mansfield students, your leadership within the Home Groups has developed a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all. Thank you for the support and role-modelling you have provided to your peers and younger students within your Home Groups and the wider Mansfield community. As you embark on the next chapter of your journey, we encourage you to continue to be guided by the values that have defined your time in Mansfield. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 I would like to acknowledge and thank all the Mansfield Home Group teachers who have provided ongoing care and support for our students. Mrs Etchells, Mr Hsu, Miss Leong, Mrs Redhead-Adelt, Mrs Ruthenberg, and Ms Zingelmann have been instrumental in nurturing our students' growth and well-being, and their work is greatly valued and appreciated. Finally, I would like to thank Mrs Wright for the guidance, leadership, and support she has provided to the students and teachers of Mansfield House. Her dedication, commitment and tireless efforts have provided a strong foundation for Mansfield, for which we are all grateful. My special thanks for allowing me the privilege of continuing your work with such an amazing group of outstanding young people and staff leaders. With gratitude,

MANSFIELD HOUSE CAPTAINS

After an extremely successful year and winning the House Shield in 2022, we looked to build on the strength Mansfield House gained for 2023. Our year focused on ‘involvement and sense of community’ within Mansfield, and we are proud to say that Mansfield staff and students excelled in this endeavour. Our journey began at the Swimming Carnival, where students showed dominant competitive spirit and skill. It was remarkable to see so many become so involved, particularly when some of them were initially so nervous to compete. After this accomplishment, we moved on to the Cross Country Carnival, where our community once again showed our growing involvement and House Spirit. With the passion and effort Mansfield demonstrated, we were rewarded with a solid Second place for both events. Mansfield shone in the Pavement Art Competition, showing their creative talents with the theme of ‘Footprints’, where our students worked extremely hard to achieve a convincing First place in the Senior team, and Second place in both the Mixed and Middle Years teams. We would like to thank all of the staff and students who developed such meaningful art, particularly Mrs Etchells who dedicated so much time and thought to help students have fun and succeed.

day. Our Mansfield riders put up a tough fight, finishing in Second place. We are extremely pleased with the number of Mansfield students who came along to support and cheer-on the Mansfield RecyKle team. Mrs Wright has been a pillar of strength throughout our journey and has supported us and created a fantastic environment for Mansfield. Her remarkable leadership abilities have inspired us to become great leaders ourselves, and her actions have helped us become who we are today. She consistently gave her all to Mansfield and made sure we had the best chance possible at securing a win. At the start of Term 3, Mrs Wright stepped into the position of Dean of Students, Senior School. We have been extremely blessed to have Mr Anderson guiding and supporting us throughout our High School journey, and it has been great to have him step up and lead Mansfield House for the remainder of 2023, alongside us. We are extremely grateful for the ways in which he has inspired us throughout our leadership journey. Finally, we wanted to thank all of Mansfield House for repeatedly trying their best and bringing their all to the competitions. It was a fantastic year for us all!

For the Athletics Carnival, the prop team did a spectacular job creating the swamp and the ears from the movie, Shrek for the theme, ‘Movie Characters’. HEAD OF

RAMSAY What a joy and privilege it has been, to lead Ramsay this year! While 2023 has seen success for Ramsay, winning the Swimming Carnival, Cross Country and Athletics, it is more important to note the growth, relationship development, team spirit and core values that students in Ramsay have upheld this year. Our foundation is biblical, like all that we do at Redeemer, and when our actions are rooted in God’s love, the ripple effect is nothing short of amazing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 tells us to “Encourage one another and build each other up”. I am proud to have witnessed this underpinning mantra at House events, but also around the College in day-to-day life. Ramsay weekly Devotions unpacked each layer of the pyramid, moving from our foundation to the Ramsay values, Ramsay family traits and interactions with others, and concluded with a time of reflection regarding the legacy Ramsay will leave behind at the end of 2023. The Ramsay values and Ramsay family traits were particularly evident at the Swimming Carnival, where students were encouraged to participate, and everyone was a valued contributor. Term 2 saw three House Events: Cross Country (Wild West), Pavement Art (‘Footprints’) and Athletics (Movie Characters). These were all opportunities for students to look in the mirror and to ask themselves what they could do to contribute to Ramsay. In some instances, students pushed themselves out of their comfort zones to participate, trying something new, or even competing in an older age group in order to fill teams. These internal responses and willingness to have a go speaks volumes about the

students in Ramsay. For RecyKle in Term 3, Ramsay filled a team easily and the encouragement and team spirit from within our House was amazing. The end of the year often brings a sense of sadness as we farewell the Year 12’s, but it is also a time of reflection. Over the course of Semester 2, I took the time to speak with individual students about their legacy – what will they be remembered for as a student from Ramsay in 2023? While this activity is a simple one, it is obvious from each response that the students in Ramsay care deeply for one another and are keen to leave behind “crumbs” for others to see and build upon in the future. This year wouldn’t have been possible without the enthusiasm of the students in Ramsay and their willingness to have a go at everything thrown their way. Whether it was racing the 200m at the Athletics Canival, dressing up as the Ramsay Duck, or cheering for House points, I am incredibly grateful for the positive attitude from all students in Ramsay, and of course the leadership that Sanjai and Katerina showed the team throughout their time as House Captains. Congratulations to all students in Ramsay for your contributions this year and for your encouragement, kindness, inclusivity, and positivity towards one another. These personal attributes have contributed to our success this year, but more importantly, have helped to shape you as young people within the wider community. My hope and prayer for our departing Year 12’s, is that you can embrace these characteristics as you move beyond Redeemer and continue building others up as you meet new people and do amazing things.

RAMSAY HOUSE CAPTAINS

2023 was a very successful year for Ramsay, starting with achieving First place at the Swimming Carnival in Term 1. With the theme of ‘Pirates and Mermaids’, Ramsay House spent their lunch breaks painting props and planning the dress-ups. Many students in Ramsay gave their best effort in the pool, as well as cheering for their classmates from the stands. Cross Country was next, with the theme of ‘Wild Wild West’, which brought in a lot of fun props for Ramsay House. All Home Groups got involved as we crafted horses out of pool noodles, to continue the legacy of ‘Home Group creations.’ We all dressed up and tried our best on the day, having fun and bringing our own yellow props to support the theme. Finishing the day with our second win for the year was very well-deserved for Ramsay, as many students placed well on the day. Pavement Art was a big accomplishment, and Ramsay created some very beautiful artworks. The theme of ‘Footprints’ was interpreted in different ways by our three teams, and we did very well as a House. The final carnival for the year was the Athletics Carnival, with the theme ‘Movie Characters’. The whole House participated by crafting Minion hats and dressing up as The Minions throughout the two days. A special thanks goes to Mr McClune who dressed up as the character Gru on the day, completing our theme and raising our House Spirit.

RecyKle was next, and we had a very solid team ready to ride to another win! Despite injuries and illness, Ramsay pushed through the adversity and managed to attain a respectable Third place. 2023 was also a very exciting year for Ramsay because we announced the new mascot costume. The new duck mascot was used by multiple students for each carnival. We are thankful to the other Houses for the competition, as well as all students and staff who make Ramsay what it is. A very special thanks goes to Mrs Fleming, our amazing Head of House. Mrs Fleming has been the cornerstone of Ramsay House, always around to boost morale and get students interested in competitions. As a note to Ramsay, we would like to say that we are proud of everyone and hope that future generations can continue the legacy of Ramsay House and the incredible performances we consistently produce!

Katerina Evlachkov & Sanjai Hewton Ramsay House Captains 2023

Athletics Carnival Day 1 was Field Day, where we competed in different activities throughout the day and gained many participation points. Day 2 was Track Day which really fired-up the runners in Ramsay, with many students eagerly participating to gain House points. Over both days everyone was dressing up in their costumes and having fun. Ramsay achieved yet another victory and remained the House of effort and camaraderie.

WILSON “We become what we behold”

Second in both categories at the Athletics Carnival. We then finished the year strong by reclaiming the title of RecyKle champions.

This year, as a community, Wilson has fully embraced the theme of ‘What we nurture, is what we will grow.’ Like a plant in growth, we have come to realise that to flourish and form strong roots, we must live out our values through our words and actions for our legacy of courage, participation, and connections to be realised.

I would like to thank Billy and Faith for their outstanding leadership of our House this year. They have both led from the front as role models and encouraged from the side in nurturing and boosting of House Spirit. Both Billy and Faith have significantly influenced Wilson House culture in so many positive ways, that I am sure their legacy will continue to be felt for years to come.

Colonel Sir Leslie Orme Wilson

We have focused our energies on the nurturing of our core values of inclusion, belonging, self-worth and being Christ-led through our involvement in community activities and events, such as Operation Christmas Child and R U OK? Day. Through acts of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness, our warrior courage has shown up and been vulnerable. As Head of House, I am beaming with pride at the strength and courage our community has displayed at Interhouse events and in our daily interactions within the College community. These interactions have brought Joshua 1:9 into fruition, as we have ‘been strong and courageous, not terrified or discouraged, but always hopeful in our knowledge that the Lord our God, goes with us always.’ This year in House Assemblies and extended Home Group, we have prioritised the fostering of service through our involvement in House events. We have recognised the importance of well-being, through the implementation of regular well-being check-ins and enacting our weekly GEM Wheel recommendations. As the year has progressed, so did the forging of our foundational roots, as we came to truly shine both in House Spirit and participation, placing

Thank you to our amazing Home Group Teachers, who go above and beyond daily to support the Pastoral Care and well-being of our students. I feel blessed to work with such professional and caring individuals who work tirelessly to meet the ever-changing individual needs of our Wilson Warriors. Last, but definitely not least, to all the incredible students in Wilson House, what a tremendous year we have experienced. I feel both privileged and honoured to be your Head of House. Like a tree, you have stayed strong to your Christian values, continued to grow powerful connections through the strengthening of our House roots. I pray that you always remain in God’s grace and, like a tree, may you bend but never break when struggles arise. You may become weary in rough and unpredictable weather, but triumph in the realisation of your inner strength, beauty and potential to weather any storm in the garden of life. May you rejoice in the realisation that God will always walk beside you, to ensure that the warmth of the sunshine will again provide you with the strength, courage, and confidence to truly flourish and blossom.

WILSON

HOUSE CAPTAINS Wilson House in 2023 has seen some extremely memorable moments that will be remembered for years to come within the rich history of our House community. This year we have prioritised the fostering of our Wilson House core foundational values, where we believe that ‘what we nurture, is what we grow.’

We want to thank Mrs Johansen for the work she has done as the Wilson Head of House. It was such a privilege to work alongside someone with so much passion and resilience. The countless weeks spent on our House is deeply appreciated, and we thank her for her continued guidance and dedication.

It was much more of a marathon when trying to instill these values into our community as we struggled to be seen as a dominating House for a large portion of the year. However, as the year draws to a close, Wilson is starting to grow into a leading House.

It has been an honour to serve the Wilson community as House Captains for 2023. Our little Prep selves would not have thought that this experience and leadership would be possible; however, we are extremely appreciative of all the staff and students who guided us on our journey along the way.

It was a blessing for us to see everyone in Wilson come together to dominate many track and field events at the Athletics Carnival. This was the Wilson highlight of the year, with an outstanding number of students showing up, not only to participate, but seriously compete. We dominated track and field and demonstrated our unwavering House Spirit, with a convincing First place in the categories of cheer and visual spirit.

Good luck to the Wilson House Captains of 2024! We look forward to seeing what you do to continue the inspiring legacy of Wilson House.

Overall, we came Second in both House Spirit and Athletics results, which is a massive accomplishment for Wilson House. With the excitement of our Athletics success, our Wilson RecyKle team for 2023 showed courage and resilience. With the inspiring support of Mrs Hunt in her final year at the College, our team was able to be crowned WINNERS of the event! It was extremely emotional and special to have ended the House competitions with a win.

HEAD OF

SENIOR SCHOOL Cherished Connections "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." Hebrews 10:24-25 This year has been one filled with growth, collaboration, and a strong sense of community at Redeemer Lutheran College. As we reflect on the year's achievements, challenges, and contributions, the verse from Hebrews reminds us of the importance of unity and mutual support in our journey together. The heart of Redeemer is reflected in our relationships, and this year, the Redeemer family has truly demonstrated its strength. In a world that sometimes feels divided, it has been heartwarming to witness the unity that prevails within our College. All the staff at Redeemer work hard to ensure students are being cared for in a nurturing environment where everyone feels safe, valued and appreciated. There are so many talented people who ensure our College runs smoothly each day and I thank the Support Staff and teacher assistants in particular, as they are the people who do all the work behind the scenes and often receive little recognition.

The quality of teaching and learning at Redeemer is influenced by our professional teachers who demonstrate an unwavering dedication to their students' growth; their passion for teaching, mentoring, and guiding students to achieve their best is evident in their daily interactions and their desire to go the extra mile. Through their commitment, they have instilled in our students a love for life-long learning and a desire to reflect and continuously improve. Parents and teachers have partnered together to support students in their endeavours, both in and out of the classroom. Student success has been celebrated in all areas of College life, inclusive of academic and cocurricular areas. Parent dedication to fostering open communication and partnership has greatly enriched the learning experience of our students. Your active participation in our community showcases the true essence of a Christian education. Our students have embodied the spirit of the Redeemer community in 2023, through their enthusiasm, resilience, and willingness to support one another. Their achievements, both inside and outside the classroom, have been remarkable. From academic excellence to artistic expression, from sportsmanship to leadership, our students have embraced the values we hold dear, demonstrating what it means to be Curious, Courageous and Christ-led.

Prayer of Gratitude and Hope Thank you, Lord for immersing us in your love, strength and courage in 2023. May the Holy Spirit guide us to continue to build each other up and support each other. Let us cherish the connections we've forged and give us hope in Christ as a united Redeemer community.

DEAN OF

LEARNING

Covid now seems like a distant memory. But 2023 marked yet another significant turning point. In a sense, we started the year with the ‘new normal.’ But a little online tool called ChatGPT, released on 30 Nov 2022 rapidly started to make waves… The rate of change in Education exploded. The way we work and learn is being transformed like never before. So, I’m not spending hours writing an article this year. Instead, 45 seconds to engineer a prompt and then a quick copy and paste. Here it goes…

My Prompt

“I am a high school educator. I need a 300 word article for my school community that reflects on the emergence of AI in education. The article should highlight the opportunities and challenges of emerging technology. The article should reveal that it was AI generated. It will be published in an annual magazine.”

The Result

Embracing the Future: The Rise of AI in Education As we step into the 21st century, the landscape of education is undergoing a profound transformation, thanks to the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This technological revolution is redefining the way we teach, learn, and interact with information, and it brings with it a world of opportunities and challenges. Opportunities: Personalised Learning: AI in education enables us to tailor educational experiences to individual students. It can analyse a student's strengths and weaknesses, offering personalised recommendations and resources to support their unique learning journey. Efficiency: With AI, educators can automate administrative tasks, such as grading, scheduling, and data analysis. This frees up valuable time for teachers to focus on more meaningful aspects of teaching, like fostering critical thinking and creativity.

Teacher-Student Relationship: While AI can enhance education, it should never replace the crucial teacherstudent relationship. It's essential to strike a balance between AI-driven tools and the human touch in education Equity: Not all students have equal access to technology and AI resources. Bridging the digital divide is a challenge, as we strive to ensure that AI doesn't exacerbate educational inequalities.

As we navigate this brave new world of AI in education, it's vital that we embrace these opportunities while remaining vigilant about the challenges. By doing so, we can harness the power of AI to create a more personalised, efficient, and accessible education system that prepares our students for the challenges of the future. AI-Generated Article: This article was generated with the assistance of AI technology, showcasing the potential of AI in content creation. While AI can aid in writing, it is important to remember the human role in editing, reviewing, and ensuring that the content aligns with the goals and values of the school community. I’m not sure. I don’t love it. This isn’t my style of writing. Just doesn’t seem authentic. What do you think? There are elements I agree with and others I do not. I am pleased that my AI generated article highlights the importance of relationships alongside technology in education. I like this. I cherish the connection and community we have at Redeemer. It’s what makes Redeemer such a special place to work and learn. To maintain that human connection, maybe next year I’ll write my article the old-fashioned way. (Or improve my prompt engineering).

Mr Aaron Hardke

Dean of Learning, Senior Years

Access to Quality Education: AI-driven online platforms make quality education accessible to a global audience, breaking down geographical and financial barriers. Students can access courses and materials from the best institutions around the world. Challenges: Privacy Concerns: AI systems collect vast amounts of data about students, raising concerns about data privacy. It's crucial to ensure that this data is used responsibly and that students' sensitive information is protected.

DEAN OF

STUDENTS

From the outset, it was certain that this year would bring many fresh opportunities and challenges to the students of Redeemer. The other certainty that has buoyed us and helped everyone to rise to those challenges, has been the positive attitude, resilience, and tenacity shown by Redeemer’s student cohort.

pitched, organised, promoted, and ran this event. We are exceptionally proud of their tenacity throughout this challenge. It is testament to the character required to build a rich community; through the discomfort and uncertainty of creating something new, Billy and Matt facilitated a joyous experience and leave a legacy.

In facing new and challenging situations, alongside faith, one’s character is often all that there is to rely upon. Character is developed by accepting, adapting to, and learning from life’s challenges, whether personal, academic, athletic, or creative. This sometimes involves discomfort, as learning often does, but the pursuit of growth is a worthy endeavour. In every case where the path forward was unknown, the students of Redeemer have worked together to build a bridge, scale a mountain – to find a way where it would have been easier to simply go back.

Student voice and agency are central tenets of learning at Redeemer, and these were represented through the work of Student Council. Several ideas came to fruition in 2023, with the introduction of girls shorts as a uniform option, and the Maroon Day created to show our support for the Queensland team of the State of Origin. Further initiatives were also implemented, such as providing picnic blankets for student use and improving communication of key publications so students can stay up to date with school events and learning around the campus.

The life-changing, four-week Year 9 Mt Binga Outdoor Education program challenges students, all while developing their character in taking initiative, building independence, reflecting deeply, and having gratitude. From daily chores to the four-day hike, students are challenged to reach new heights while appreciating the values of teamwork, patience, and kindness. In all aspects of our life, God guides us to ground our character in his image. In Galatians 5:22-23, Paul reveals the nine fruits of the spirit as “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and selfcontrol.” Naturally, the experienced and dedicated team of staff at Redeemer have been there at every possible juncture to assist and guide students towards places where they can thrive. However, the real challenge for students is to find within themselves the strength to reach their fullest potential, harness it, and unflinchingly pursue their highest goals and dreams. It is with great pleasure that I can look back over the year to recognise the Redeemer spirit being harnessed in so many instances. Here are just a few notable examples. The student leadership team has embodied the College ethos with enthusiasm and determination this year. House Captains Billy Wearne and Matthew Rostron introduced the Inaugural Redeemer Interhouse Capture the Flag competition. This was no mean feat: they developed,

Co-curricular activities in the Senior School also highlighted the commitment to growth and character of Redeemer students. This year we witnessed a characteristically determined pursuit for excellence in the outstanding musical production of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, the QLD da Vinci Decathlon, One Act Play performances, the Short Film production, the National Get IT competition, Debating, GBC Sport, Music, student coaching and more. This list only begins to describe the co-curricular endeavours and learning in the College. It is important to recognise the many hours of tireless hard work that have made each activity a resounding success and a great deal of fun for all involved. Redeemer students know you only get out what you put in.

PASTORAL CARE LEADER "The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it." J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan Moving into Year 7 and the Senior Years, is a big change in the lives of young people. They are faced with many opportunities, challenges and experiences they haven’t had exposure to before, and they also enter a significant stage of growth, both physically and mentally. As J.M Barrie told us in Peter Pan, "The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it." This has not been a concern for the 2023 Year 7 cohort – they are characterised by their enthusiasm and willingness to try new things, and boy have they flown this year! From the very get-go, the Year 7 students, in their crisp new uniforms, embraced life in the Senior School. The three-day transition program saw them eagerly engage with their new teachers and peers, and they couldn’t wait to get started with their specialist subjects. Camp was a highlight for many, with their literal flight down the zip line being a big challenge and major thrill for all. There were ups and downs as Term 1 progressed and organisation and time-management skills were put to the test, but through all of this they continued to look

One of the defining features of Redeemer Lutheran College is its strong sense of community and faith. Throughout the year, students engaged in various community service activities, spreading love and kindness to those in need. They also deepened their faith through prayer, worship, and reflection, drawing inspiration from the biblical teachings that guide their journey. The Year 7 students have been fostering our Christ-led community by supporting refugee children through the Brisbane Care Project, offering assistance to peers and teachers during community events, and being smiling, friendly faces for others in our community. As they prepare to enter the next chapter of their academic journey, these students carry with them the valuable lessons learned during the 2023 school year. They have proven that with faith, resilience, and a supportive community, they can achieve anything they set their minds to. The future is bright for the Year 7 students of Redeemer Lutheran College.

JUNIOR

HEAD OF

JUNIOR SCHOOL Philosopher Lao Tzu famously said,

“The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step.” There is a lot of truth to that in many areas of life, especially when it comes to learning. Not only does the journey start with one step, but it is made up of small, yet very important steps. Whether it is academics, sport, music or any other learning, we make progress through small, regular and intentional improvements. This is so important to remember as we often wish children could just magically ‘do it all’ and ‘know it all’, but what they really need is to be able to take their next step. To understand that next piece of information, to master that next skill, to take on that next challenge – that is the key to growth. The extra challenge of this is that every student’s ‘next step’ can be different, and it is the role of the teacher to identify and support them as they take that step. This is why our focus on personalised learning is so important. Learning experiences must consider the students – their needs, interests and goals – so that they can be guided on each of their steps.

This idea is a key part of our approach at Redeemer, both in terms of our students’ learning and also in terms of our own development as educators and as a school. By constantly working hard, reflecting on actions and carefully considering the next step towards the goal, we seek to continually learn, grow and improve – that is as true for the adults in the community as it is for the children. The idea of kaizen, coined by Masaaki Imai, captures this idea. Kaizen is defined as change for the better or continuous improvement. The process of identifying what is going well, where we can improve and what our next step is, enables us to apply the kaizen process to ensure that our practice and the learning of our students are always going forward – we are always on that journey of 1000 steps with our students. A community of learners with adults and children learning simultaneously, and therefore growing together. In 2023, this has been evident in the hundreds of students who have made incredible personal academic, social, cultural and sporting progress through the daily process of growth and learning – one step at a time. It is also evident in the continuous reflection and refinement that our teachers engage in as they seek to identify areas to improve and apply research-based, best practices in order to improve the quality of the learning experiences for our students. As we continue to do this, the best part is that there is no limit to the number of steps we can take in the education process. The key is that we must know where we are, what the next step is and be willing to patiently take one step at a time. Where each of our students ends up, nobody knows. But we know the progress will be challenging, exciting and empowering for each student. I am so incredibly proud of each of our students and staff members and count it a privilege to be part of this amazing learning community. I hope that is the experience for each of our students, families and staff as well.

DEAN OF

STUDENTS Opportunity is a word that holds immense power, particularly in the lives of our students. It signifies a chance for growth, change, and the ability to make a positive impact within our school community and beyond. Opportunity serves as a guiding light for our students, encouraging them to step forward and shape a brighter future for themselves and their peers. As educators, we draw inspiration from the wisdom of Galatians 6:10, a biblical verse that calls upon us to harness the power of opportunities to spread goodness and compassion, particularly within our extended school family. "Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." Galatians 6:10 The verse from Galatians reminds us of our collective responsibility to help our students make the most of the opportunities presented to them. It encourages us not only to seek personal growth but also to extend our efforts to benefit every member of our school community. Albert Einstein once said, "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." This quote emphasises the transformative potential of opportunities within the school environment. Challenges and obstacles are not barriers; they are moments where our students can uncover new pathways for growth and change. Whether they face academic hurdles, social challenges, or personal obstacles, our students have the choice to view these moments as roadblocks or as stepping-stones to something greater. In our Junior School, the canvas of opportunity is vast and varied. Christian Dance, Pavement Art, choirs, bands, sporting teams, Robotics, Junior School leadership or Student Council positions, camps, and the Writer's Club are just a few of the pathways available. These opportunities not only enrich students' academic experiences but also nurture their creative, athletic, and social development.

but it also helps to build resilience and healthy competition, fostering camaraderie and discipline. Junior School Leadership and Student Council positions often require a time management balancing act but give our students a chance to build community within our College. Going on a school camp often means leaving the comfort and familiarity of home and this can be an emotional challenge for some. However, when viewed with a different lens, school camps offer students the opportunity to develop independence by taking care of themselves and their belongings without parental influence. Students participating in Writer's Club may find difficulty in exploring different genres, but they are continuing to hone their literary skills, encouraging the art of storytelling. And in the world of Robotics, the complexity of programming may seem like a roadblock at times, but students are engaging with technology and innovation, laying the groundwork for future advancements. These student-centred opportunities are more than just activities —they are gateways to growth. We are proud to provide every student with a diverse range of experiences to compliment their academic journey. As we approach the end of the 2023 school year, let us remember that these opportunities are gifts. They are chances for our students, to become better individuals and agents of positive change. By embracing this philosophy and participating wholeheartedly, we can truly live out the essence of Galatians 6:10 and Einstein's quote. As we move towards the next year, let's empower our students to seize these opportunities. In the end, it's their dedication, curiosity, and resilience that will shape a brighter future for all.

Mrs Leah Storer Dean of Students P-6

Participating in the choirs and bands might seem daunting for those who experience performance anxiety; however, they are an opportunity to teach students the power of cooperation. While Christian Dance celebrates spirituality through movement, some performances may involve costumes and props that students need to become comfortable with. Being a part of a sporting team can be physically demanding, requiring endurance and strength,

SCIENCE

Middle Years

After familiarising themselves with lab safety and lab techniques - very important skills for budding scientists, the Year 7 students were able to apply newtons laws in their first ever Science problem-based learning (PBL) project. They learned about chemical changes and saw an example of state change when their teacher made dry ice, ice cream for them. They also learned how space discoveries have impacted scientific communities today, with the option of attending Astronomy Night. Students finished the year with a Biology unit: Classification and Ecology, where they learned how different organisms interact with each other. Year 8 students were responsible for writing a research report about rocks, volcanos, earthquakes and plate tectonics and their importance. In order to learn the interrelatedness of cells and organ systems, students completed heart and kidney dissections. They were involved in a STEAM student experiment unit where they created rubber band racers to investigate elastic potential and energy transformations. They finished off the year by looking at atoms, matter and different physical and chemical reactions. Year 9 students have worked to polish their skills in research and critical scientific writing in addition to design and evaluation of experimental procedure. They completed many experiments on acids and bases and the conservation of mass principle, completed a Physics unit involving circuit making and LED circuit boards, and studied the Earth’s systems and the impact we have, as humans, on climate change. Students created Sanky diagrams and analysed systems efficiencies, in terms of energy transformations and finished the year with many dissections to become familiar with the coordinated response of the endocrine, nervous, and circulatory system.

ACADEMIC

One of the most memorable activities this year was the ‘Great Battle of the Minds’ against the Year 4 students. Giving great competition, we witnessed the Junior School’s fervour for problem-solving as we versed them in mathematical trivia.

“The journey of academics this year has

None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the unwavering support of Mrs Johansen and Mrs Robinson. These two remarkable individuals have been our pillars of guidance, ensuring that every roadblock was removed, and every opportunity was seized, whether it was preparing scripts for academic announcements, establishing a new study space for Senior School students or scheduling interactions with specific year levels. Thank you both very much!

CAPTAINS

been nothing short of inspirational.”

This role has given us the opportunity to empower our fellow students in their academic endeavours and cultivate efficacious study strategies to extend and reach the immense potential of their minds. Throughout the year, a symphony of engaging events and initiatives have been orchestrated that have left a longlasting impression on our school community. One of the most rewarding initiatives was presenting study strategies and academic tricks of the trade to the younger grades in Learning Mentor Time (LMT). We hope that these strategies and tools will be of great service to them throughout and after their school journey.

COMMUNITY

SERVICE CAPTAINS

“With everyone’s contribution, we were able to serve others and make a change to someone’s life.” The Community Service Committee worked closely with the Meals on Wheels organisation for the annual Easter initiative, held in Term 1, to distribute over 200 Easter eggs. Along with a kind message, the Easter eggs were all bagged and sent to the wider community, including retirement villages and homes. But of course, we could not do this without the assistance of the Junior and Senior School community, all contributing with kind and generous donations. Weekly meetings were held and, in conjunction with a student’s health assignment to create an initiative that will benefit others, we were able to give back to the community by knitting a rug for the Helping Hands Van recipients.

We hope that as we depart to the next stage in our life, we would have left a spirit for lifelong learning and academic pursuit in the future students of Redeemer. Our gratitude to Mrs Johansen, Mrs Robinson, and the entire school community knows no bounds. May the love of learning remain etched in all hearts of all our community as they pursue their academic journey in school and throughout life.

Brandon Kiehle & Kostya Reznik Academic Captains 2023

As we reflect on this year’s journey, we are grateful to have been given the opportunity to contribute to our school community in academics. It was wonderful to celebrate with our Year 12 peers their academic excellence when 58% of the cohort were awarded Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards.

In Term 2, the Senior School community had the opportunity to contribute towards the Two-Can Appeal, which, in partnership with the Helping Hands Van, provided food items to people in need in our wider community, during their weekly Friday night visits. With every compassionate donation from the students, the Redeemer food pantry began filling up, providing several weeks of food for the wider community. Another event organised by the Community Service Committee included RecyKle. This is a House event where the four Houses compete against each other to determine who can cycle the furthest distance in a total of 20 minutes, on an exercise bike. With a maximum team size of 12 people, Wilson was the House that took the crown, cycling over 40km to earn House points and the overall House competition! World’s Greatest Shave and Sister Snips in Term 4 included brave students who cut their hair and shaved their heads. Male student’s hair was donated to clean up oil spills, whilst female student’s hair was turned into wigs for cancer patients.

All revenue from the community was donated to The Leukaemia Foundation for cancer research and treatment. I thank everyone who supported and helped organise the events and initiatives in 2023, from the members of the committee to the donors and each person who participated. I would like to give a special thanks to Mrs Dart who kindly guided me through this role and was always there to support and assist with any troubles that I faced. Overall, with everyone’s contribution, we were able to serve others and make a change to someone’s life.

This year has been an eventful one for the Cultural & Traditions Committee. As Captains, we have focused on having a creative and engaging approach to the culture of our school and how it is informed by the unique talents, backgrounds and interests of Redeemer students.

EARTH

CARE CAPTAIN Redeemer’s Earth Care Committee has had an exceptional year in 2023, with an outstanding and record-breaking 51 members, including staff and students! With the outstanding leadership of Ella Wiech, Miss Leong, and Mrs Symons, our committee has been able to spread awareness and make impactful contributions and change to the Redeemer community this year. As a committee, we were all very passionate to support and spread awareness regarding the Sea World Foundation. The Sea World Foundation became a key focus for us in 2023 and students researched ways in which we could support this foundation to provide a healthier environment for our marine life. The Sea World Foundation is dedicated to conducting research, rescue, and conservation efforts to protect the marine environment for future generations.

The committee throroughly enjoyed organising stalls for Valentine’s Day and Easter, as well as continuing the Redeemer tradition of Lunch on the Green, where we had a range of student music performances. For this event, we collaborated with the Earth Care Committee, which fundraised through the accompanying sausage sizzle lunch. Our personal highlight was preparing for the celebrations of World Week. Each day of the week focused on celebrating a different nation, and this year we chose Japanese, Chinese, German, Indian and Greek themed days.

creating delicious food originating from around the world. It has been incredible to see the participation and we thank all the students and staff who volunteered their time, preparing for activities and purchasing from our stalls. Thank you especially to Ms Anderson who inspires a fun and creative approach to cultural activities which help us learn in more ways than just via a classroom. We have had a great year and it has meant a lot to us to help cast a spotlight on our school's diversity and culture.

Cultural & Traditions Captains 2023

We planned international dances, games and cuisine for each of these, including welcoming the Junior School students to participate with us. We extend our thanks to the Tuckshop Staff and also the Lifestyle Technologies Department for collaborating with the committee by

This resonated with our students as they were inspired to help maintain a beautiful environment to exist for our younger students, and linked to the inspiring work of last year’s committee which helped fund the rehabilitation of a green sea turtle now named ‘Bluey’. Through efforts of fundraising, the Sea World Foundation aims to raise a greater knowledge, appreciation, and awareness for marine conservation. Furthermore, the Sea World Foundation also supports the Save a Mate Program out of Paradise Country with a focus on native wildlife care and research. The committee held and organised to raise these funds through our annual Go Green Day. Go Green Day was such a wonderful event to bring our Redeemer community together! Everyone passionately wore green items and contributed a gold coin donation to support our cause. I would like to say a massive thank you to the Lifestyle Technologies Department who supported us by providing a sausage sizzle to raise a total of $1,200 in funds which have been donated to the Sea World Foundation. It was also excellent to see our Junior School students show interest and participate in some fun learning opportunities and interact with Senior students at the Go Green Day event!

With the success of Go Green Day, the committee was passionate about raising awareness for a much more local cause in our community. We would like to say a massive thank you to Mr Symons who was involved in educating our students on where our local rubbish ends up through the multiple waterways in our community. With Mr Symons, our committee members spent a lunchtime collecting rubbish around the College to show the exceptional pride and care they hold in protecting our nature and wonderful wildlife, such as our pink galah’s! Overall, the Earth Care Committee is making a meaningful impact in our community, and I am extremely excited to see what they do heading into 2024!

FAITH &

SERVICE CAPTAINS “We are so grateful for the opportunities we have received and feel that we have been able to grow through the responsibilities entrusted to us.”

2023 has been an amazing year for Faith & Service at the College, with so much support from our peers and staff. As Faith & Service Captains, our biggest achievement this year would be reestablishing the Faith Committee. We were given the opportunity to run the committee and are extremely grateful to all the students who showed up for our meetings, and to the staff who helped us to facilitate these meetings and make our ideas a reality.

152 • Cocurricular

Students were asked to join us for committee meetings once every two weeks, and throughout the year we saw many new faces there from across various year levels. Through this committee, we were able to hear from students regarding what they would like times in Chapel and devotion to look like, and how they want faith to be implemented into their everyday lives at Redeemer.

Thank you for organising and assisting us at each meeting, and for making the ideas of committee members possible.

Throughout the year, we were given the privilege of writing and delivering numerous devotions in Chapel and House Assemblies, as well as sharing prayers and Bible verses for special events. With the help of eager students and staff, we were also able to bring back the Senior Worship Band on Friday mornings.

It’s been a pleasure to be Redeemer’s Faith & Service Captains for 2023.

We are so grateful for the opportunities we have received and feel that we have been able to grow through the responsibilities entrusted to us. We would like to express our gratitude to Mr Anderson and Mrs Lopez, who we wouldn’t have been able to run the Faith Committee without.

We thank everyone who has supported us on our journey, and everyone who showed up to our committee meetings. We hope this committee is continued by next year’s Faith & Service Captains, and we wish them the best of luck.

ARTS CAPTAINS

The role has reinforced the belief that art transcends boundaries and has the power to unite, heal, and communicate messages that words alone cannot say.

“It's not just a badge, or a title; it's a responsibility to nurture and encourage the creative spirit that resides within each student.” As we reflect on our time as Creative Arts Captains, a wave of emotion and memories washes over us. This year has been an exhilarating journey, marked by growth, creativity, and the power of collaboration within the Creative Arts Department. Stepping into the roles of Creative Arts Captains, we were both excited and somewhat daunted by the immense responsibilities ahead. This year has been a whirlwind of activities, from assisting with the College Musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, displaying the diverse talents of our students, to compering Drama, Art, and Film exhibition evenings, showcasing students’ creativity. Being the Creative Arts Captains has meant the world to both of us. It's not just a badge,

MUSIC CAPTAINS

“The sense of camaraderie and shared passion for music has truly been the driving force behind the accomplishments of our department” We are filled with a sense of pride and gratitude as we reflect on our time as the Music Captains for 2023. Being part of the Music Department has been a privilege and a joy. The highlight of this year was definitely our spectacular production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which showcased the incredible talent and dedication of our students; whether performing on stage, playing in the orchestra pit, or helping out behind-thescenes. We are certain that this musical will remain an unforgettable experience for all involved! As Music Captains, we have worked closely with our staff and fellow musicians to produce a high standard of musical excellence. Witnessing the growth and

One of the most valuable lessons we've learned during our captaincy is that leadership isn't about being the best, but about empowering others to shine. Through collaboration and attentive listening, we've discovered that the best ideas often form from collective ideas of a group. Patience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from both successes and challenges have been our guiding principles.

To the younger students who are just beginning their journey in creative arts, we want to offer some words of encouragement. Embrace every opportunity to explore and experiment with your creative interests. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, as that's where growth happens. Remember that creativity is a journey, not a destination, so be patient with yourself and celebrate each step forward. As we pass on the torch to the next Creative Arts Captains, we are filled with a sense of pride and hope for what lies ahead. As we look back on this exhilarating year, we are reminded that art is not just what we create, but how it touches the lives of those around us.

Ava Killian & Ashley Meakins Creative Arts Captains 2023

We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support and dedication from the teachers, fellow students, and our fellow Captains. Their enthusiasm and willingness to contribute their time and energy have made every event a success. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to each person who lent a helping hand, shared their expertise, or simply cheered us on from the sidelines.

progress of our peers throughout rehearsals and concerts has been immensely rewarding. The sense of camaraderie and shared passion for music has truly been the driving force behind the accomplishments of our department, including performances at the Queensland Youth Music Awards, Redlands Eisteddfod and Music Fest. As student leaders, we have learned invaluable lessons throughout our journey from our experiences, opportunities, and all of the people surrounding us. Throughout 2023, this role has taught us the significance of teamwork and cooperation. We have embraced the responsibility that comes with leadership, striving to inspire and motivate others to pursue their musical aspirations. Throughout our time as leaders, we have been supported by many remarkable people. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the students, parents, and Music teachers, tutors and conductors who have guided us through 2023. The unwavering encouragement and enthusiasm we received from our fellow students has been instrumental to our growth and achievements. The guidance and mentorship provided by all Music staff has helped shape us into confident and capable leaders.

As our time as Music Captains draws to a close, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been a part of our journey. Thank you for the incredible and unforgettable memories that we have created together. We hope that you have been inspired to pursue your own musical aspirations. We encourage all the younger students to continue developing their talents and passion for music throughout the remainder of their schooling. Redeemer’s Music Department is a vibrant and uplifting community, and we have been truly honoured to serve as its Captains. As we pass the baton to the next cohort of leaders, we are confident that they will continue to uphold the standard of excellence of Redeemer’s Music program.

CREATIVE ARTS Off with a Bang! The year started with a bang (bang!) with the College Musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang involving so many of our Creative Arts students, either on stage or behind the scenes working on sets, scenic art or costumes. Meanwhile, there was also so much happening in the classroom. It is such a joy to see students building on what they learn in the classroom through the various cocurricular activities and for these experiences to feedback into their classroom work. Inspiration is everywhere and the learning goes beyond the classroom. This year, for the first time, we were able to collaborate with the Music Department to showcase the complex and intricate final assessment pieces of all Year 12 Arts Students: Visual Art, Drama, Film and Music Extension. This year brought much change for both Visual Art and Film, Television and New Media, as these subjects are now housed in purpose-built facilities in the new Innovation Hub. The Visual Art students were extremely fortunate to be invited to create illustrations for selection in a children's story book. Students from Years 8 to12 entered an array of incredible artworks about the adventures of a bluetongued lizard. Redeemer student artworks will be

published in Nicky Bricknell's third book in the Lizard series, Lizard Saves the Day. Other notable accomplishments include student work being selected for display in the District Artwaves Exhibition. Work by Year 12 students, Teagan Dalton, Katerina Evlachkov, Ally Liu and Ethan Nagel, and Year 11 students, Sharon Jin, Kaitlin Cheung, Angelique Rochet and Lilian Zhuang were selected. Two of our younger students were also recognised in the IEU State Awards for Excellence in Art Design 2023: Colour is Life competition. Leigh Kirchhubel was awarded a Highly Commended Years 78 section and Alina Zhou was also awarded a Highly Commended in the Years 9-10 section. Years 8 and 9 Drama and Film students collaborated on a cross-curricular short film project in Terms 1 and 2. Students brainstormed the theme of ‘Footprints’ and developed a concept to meet this brief. While the Drama students developed the script, Film students produced shot lists, storyboards and found locations. Guest artist Thomas Larkin worked with the Drama students, providing valuable insight into acting for screen, before each group came together to film the project. Lastly, Film students completed the post-production elements of editing and sound. We were thrilled to be notified that one of the entries was selected as a national finalist in the Intermediate section of the REELise Film Festival. The four finalists, Tao Chen, Leona Li, Ishani Wahegaonkar and Lyon Zeneldin were eager to fly to Sydney for the day to attend the red carpet event and see their short film on the big screen. Throughout the day, they were able to meet other film makers and talk with industry professionals. You can imagine the excitement when their film was announced as the winner of the People’s Choice award! There are many exciting and new opportunities ahead for 2024!

PERFORMANCE MUSIC

Harmony in Education: The Transformative Power of Music at Redeemer

At Redeemer Lutheran College, music flows through the very heart of the campus, enriching the lives of students in ways that extend far beyond the notes on a page. As one of Queensland's premier music education institutions, Redeemer has not only embraced the importance of music, but also ensures that high-quality music-making is available to all students, from Prep to Year 12. At Redeemer, Music is for Everyone. Music lessons and ensembles at Redeemer are more than just a co-curricular activity; they are a special component of the educational experience. Conducted and taught by some of Queensland's most esteemed music educators, these lessons instil a deep appreciation for the arts, discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and a life-long love for music. It was an absolute thrill to learn that all of Redeemer's premier ensembles (Senior Singers, Chamber Strings, Wind Orchestra and Stage Band) received Platinum Awards in the A-Grade Secondary sections of MusicFest. This significant recognition reflects not only the students' exceptional musical abilities but also the depth of the College’s music program in all musical disciplines – choral, strings, wind, band and jazz. This is mostdefinitely something that all families at the College can be proud of, knowing that the journey to arrive at this destination required many years of hard work and care from all involved. Many other groups at the College received similar accolades and, as such, all students must be commended for their very fine teamwork and commitment to their craft. Two new ensembles, the Jazz Band and the Percussion Ensemble, were introduced at Redeemer in 2023 to fulfill student needs, and their rapid success is a testament to the talent and dedication of the young musicians in these groups. These ensembles have quickly become a source of pride for the College community, showcasing the exceptional musical talent within their ranks. The Redeemer Concert Series is, most-certainly, one of the many highlights of the musical calendar at Redeemer. From the intimate Chamber by Candlelight to the grand Senior School Finale concert, these performances allow students to showcase their talents and share their passion for music with their peers, families, and the wider community. Additionally, Redeemer continues to build on its relationship with the Queensland Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble, creating opportunities for students to collaborate with and learn from accomplished musicians beyond the campus.

look forward to nurturing their musical experience in the years to come. The College takes immense pride in the achievement of eight of its students who are participating in the Australian Honours Ensemble Program - an individual accomplishment that speaks volumes about the calibre of musicians nurtured at Redeemer. In such busy and often overwhelming times, the impact of music on student mental health cannot be overstated. Music has the power to soothe, inspire, and heal. At Redeemer, students find solace and joy in music, helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence with a positive and creative outlet. Behind the scenes, the College's Music program is supported by a team of 21 itinerate Music Staff, many of whom perform with world-class ensembles such as the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Camerata, Queensland's Chamber Orchestra. Their expertise and passion for music enrich the lives of our students every day, and we sincerely thank them all for their enthusiasm, care and inspiration. As the great philosopher Plato once said, "Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything". At Redeemer Lutheran College, these words ring true. The harmonious blend of education and music transforms students into wellrounded individuals, fostering creativity, discipline, and a deep appreciation for the arts. Music at Redeemer is not just about the notes—it's about nurturing the soul, opening the doors to new experiences, creating lifelong memories, and embracing the transformative power of music. “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” Colossians 3:16

Head of Performance Music

At Redeemer, music education isn't limited to experienced musicians. Beginning music programs like Piccolo Strings for Year 2 students and the integrated Year 5 Band classroom program are designed to introduce instrumental music to students at all levels, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to explore their musical potential. Students in both programs in 2023 have had much to celebrate, and we

HEAD OF

SPORT Redeemer Sport 2023, The Year that Was. When reflecting back to the start of the 2023 school year to write this piece, I very quickly realised how much sport we have managed to fit into 2023 for our Junior and Senior students! After building consistency in our programs and competitions in 2021 and 2022, we shifted our focus to now challenge our students to commit to and take the opportunities available to them to train and compete. The Sport Department’s theme for 2023 was “Opportunity” and, for students, this meant participating in Interhouse events, GBC (Greater Brisbane Conference) Sport, Logan District, Met East Regional and State level competitions. Pleasingly, a growing number of our students have readily taken up the many opportunities to participate in our cocurricular sport programs this year. Our Interhouse Carnivals for Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics were all swum and run with an increased level of student participation and engagement across both the Junior and School student population, which was pleasing to see. A number of our Junior and Senior students went on to compete in carnivals at the Southern Lutheran Association of Primary Schools, Logan District School Sport and Met East Regional School Sport levels and finally the GBC Carnivals, with many students placing in the top three for their events. We have continued to look at ways to engage and support our students and, in Term 3, we were able to successfully host 27 games across four sports in both the GBC Primary and GBC Senior Sport on the same day – the only GBC School to have done this. After the success of hosting the Logan District Cross Country Carnival at our DG Stolz Sportsfields in 2022, we once again hosted this event along with the SLAPS event and, for the first time, we successfully hosted the GBC Cross Country (9-18 years). We also hosted the Queensland Volleyball Primary Schools Cup competition for the first time, which we hope will become an annual event. Our SELECT Sport programs have continued to develop with many students trialling for, and being selected in, Football (soccer), Netball and Volleyball squads. The aim of the SELECT Sport program is to develop the student’s sporting skills, athletic ability, and game knowledge while

competing in external district, regional or state level competitions. We have participated in different external carnivals and competitions for each of our SELECT Sports this year to complement our GBC Sport program, and will continue to do so to expose our students to different levels and forms of competition. Our College Sport Supporter Group continued their fantastic support of the College’s co-curricular Sports program. Thanks to the many parents and guardians who helped with canteen duty throughout the year. The College Sport Department said goodbye to Mikaela Donnelly (Deputy Head of Sport) and Jane Stanley (Sport Administration Officer), and we excitedly welcomed Lauren Curry as our new Deputy Head of Sport. Lauren will focus on further developing our Junior Sport program, in addition to our Athletics, Cross Country and Netball programs. The College Sport program would not happen without the time and effort of all our Primary and Senior Sport Coaches, our Junior and Senior HPE and other school staff who coach on top of their academic workload, and of course our valuable College Sport Staff, Danielle Hinton, Emily Thompson, Mikaela DiSavia and Lauren Curry. Finally, my sincere personal thanks and gratitude to everyone who has been involved in College Sport this year. Everything we do with our College Sport is about providing students with opportunities to participate, compete and enjoy their sporting experience, and I feel we have done well to achieve this in 2023.

SPORT CAPTAINS

“The journey in sports is just as important as the destination. Embrace the process, keep a positive attitude, and give it your all.” 2023 has been another memorable and eventful year for the Redeemer Sport community. The students have shown outstanding character and sportsmanship, aiming for excellence in all that they do. Their unwavering team spirit and unparalleled enthusiasm continue to stand as a testament to everyone's dedication to their respective sports, filling us with immense pride. We have also seen success within our Greater Brisbane Conference (GBC) sports. Students were consistently putting in significant effort into the training and making the most of every opportunity. Those who participated in Select Sport teams dedicated themselves tirelessly throughout the entire year, attending competitions with enthusiasm and spirit.

We saw much success in external sport competitions, and a high level of sportsmanship and support between the Junior and Senior teams. In addition, we had numerous Redeemer students excelling in external competitions, qualifying for District, Regional and State level. This year's successes and events have contributed to Redeemer’s growing Sport community. None of this would have been possible without the amazing support of the Sport Department. A huge thank you is also extended to the students and their families for their time and commitment this year. Whether it was driving us around or cheering at games, we are incredibly grateful for everyone's support. To our younger students, we would like to offer you some words of encouragement as you embark on your sporting journeys. Remember, the journey in sports is just as important as the destination. Embrace the process, keep a positive attitude, and give it your all. Your efforts will lead to personal growth and memorable experiences.

We are privileged to be part of this amazing community and hope that it will continue to develop and grow. We hope that each student continues to strive to do their best in the coming years. Having the opportunity to be the 2023 Sport Captains has allowed us to grow in our leadership and dedication, extending further than just gameplay, but everywhere. We hope that 2024 is also filled with participation and success! It has been an honour to serve as the 2023 Redeemer Sport Captains.

Emma Chow & Brayden Kong Sport Captains 2023
