Autumn has always been a season of transition - a time when nature reminds us that change, though inevitable, can be beautiful. The golden hues, the crisp air, and the quiet slowing down invite reflection, renewal, and the courage to embrace what comes next.
This season, La Vie delves into the art of transformation, both personal and collective. I had the privilege of interviewing Brad Binder, a force on the track whose journey is a testament to resilience and reinvention. His insights on pushing limits and adapting to the ever-changing world of MotoGP left a lasting impression.
On the road, I experienced innovation firsthand while test-driving the BYD Seal from BB Hatfield - an electric marvel that challenges traditional perceptions of performance and sustainability. And in the serene setting of Aerotel in Hoedspruit, Limpopo I was reminded of the luxury found in stillness, where nature and design coexist in perfect harmony.
These experiences all echo the essence of Autumn: the balance between speed and stillness, the thrill of something new, and the grounding comfort of familiar beauty. Whether through fashion, travel, or introspective moments by a crackling fire, this issue invites you to embrace the changing season with open arms.
Because in letting go, we often find something even greater.

Samsung Galaxy Watch users in South Africa can now access two powerful health-tracking tools: Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) and Sleep Apnea detection. These updates, available through the Samsung Health Monitor app, went live earlier in 2025.
The IHRN feature monitors heart rhythms for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a condition that can lead to serious complications if undiagnosed. Alongside IHRN, users can also check their blood pressure and perform electrocardiogram (ECG) tests, all from their wrists.
The new Sleep Apnea detection tool helps identify obstructive sleep apnea, a condition affecting 26% of South African adults, the when left untreated can contribute to heart disease and even a stroke.
Initially available on the Galaxy Watch Ultra, Watch7, Watch6 Classic, and Watch FE, these features will roll out to more models soon, offering users deeper insights into our well-being and in turn peace of mind.
What’s up at WhatsAPP
Ever been stuck in a noisy café or a quiet meeting, unable to listen to a WhatsApp voice note? Or worse - do you ever receive those voice notes from someone who deems themselves worthy of their own podcast and seems to think that that’s what a WhatsApp voice note is for?
Well, your prayers might have been answered. The messaging giant has a solution: voice message transcription.
This new feature converts voice messages into text, making communication more accessible—especially for those who are hard of hearing or constantly on the move.
Activating the feature is simple. Users can head to Settings in WhatsApp > Chats > Voice Message Transcripts and toggle the feature on. Then select your preferred language, and choose whether to transcribe immediately or wait for Wi-Fi.
Viewing a transcript is just as easy—simply hold down a voice message and select Transcribe.
WhatsApp’s transcription feature supports multiple languages, though availability varies by region and device.
It’s a small but powerful upgrade, making WhatsApp even more user-friendly.

Brad Binder is no stranger to speed. From his early days racing go-karts in South Africa to making history as the first South African to win a MotoGP race, his journey has been one of passion, perseverance, and unparalleled talent. As a rising star in the world of motorsport, Brad has already achieved what many only dream of - yet, his ambition burns brighter than ever. In this exclusive Q&A interview, we take a ride with the man who’s taking the MotoGP world by storm, exploring the challenges, victories, and the fierce determination that fuels his quest for a world championship.
By Wanita Wallace
What first drew you to motorcycle racing, and how did your journey begin?
The first thing that really drew me to motorbikes was definitely my dad. He always had motorbikes when I was growing up, and as a kid, I always had one ready for me once I was big enough to ride. So, it’s something I’ve been around since I was really young.
However, the competitive side of racing actually started with go-karts. I began karting when I was about eight years old. Once I got old enough to race motorbikes, I made the switch. I left go-karts behind and focused on road racing with bikes, and that’s where I am now.
Follow-up:
Brad’s early experiences with bikes were grounded in family - his father not only introduced him to the sport, but ensured he had the tools to start early. It’s clear that family support played a massive role in shaping his path to becoming a MotoGP contender. His transition from go-karts to motorcycles was the beginning of his
focus on competitive racing, but it would take years of dedication before he reached the level we see him at today.
What were the biggest adjustments when moving from Moto3 to Moto2, and eventually MotoGP?
The biggest difference for me throughout my career, especially moving from Moto3 to Moto2, was the change in the size and weight of the bike. The main difference was really the weight. A MotoGP bike and a Moto2 bike have some similarities, with the Moto2 bike being just a few kilograms heavier. But when you’re going from a bike that weighs around 65 kilos to one that weighs 150, the change is huge. You really feel it, and the way you ride changes dramatically. You have to adjust your style to accommodate the added weight and size.
I think that was one of the most noticeable changes when stepping up from Moto3 to Moto2. But once you get the hang of it and adapt, the next step is, of course, moving from Moto2 to
MotoGP. And that jump is a whole new challenge. The power of the engine is overwhelming at first. The engines are so strong and so responsive that it can be a bit much to handle. Beyond that, you’re dealing with a whole new level of electronics. In MotoGP, you have traction control, engine brake maps, and power delivery maps. You can’t use all that power at once; you need to manage it wisely. It adds a whole new layer of complexity to the riding experience.
But despite all the new technology and power, at the end of the day, you’re still riding a motorbike. And that’s what keeps it all grounded, what makes it all still feel like the passion I’ve had for bikes since the beginning.
Follow-up:
The transition between these three classes is not just about raw speed but about mastering completely different machines. As Brad explains, while each step up in his career involves incremental changes, it’s the leap to MotoGP that really tests a rider’s ability to manage a complex set of variables. The combination of power, electronics, and handling forces riders to adapt continually. For Brad, it’s not just about overcoming these obstacles but also about maintaining the joy he has for racing - something that’s clearly been ingrained in him since childhood.
Your victory at the Czech GP in 2020 marked South Africa’s first MotoGP win. What did that mean to you?
For me, my victory in Brno was something incredibly special. It was the kind of thing I had dreamed about as a kid - winning a MotoGP race one day. After crashing out in my first two Grand Prix, to win my third was completely unexpected. And what made it even more meaningful was that it was KTM’s first-ever MotoGP victory.
It was such a huge moment for me because KTM was the brand I grew up with. I raced for them in Moto3 and Moto2, so to get their first MotoGP win, and to do it for them, for myself, and of course, for my country - it was just an unforgettable feeling. It was something I really cherished and enjoyed.
Follow-up:
Brad’s victory at the Czech GP wasn’t just a personal triumph; it was a landmark achievement for both KTM and South African motorsport. As the first South African to win a MotoGP race, Brad’s victory created a sense of national pride. But for him, the feeling of winning with KTM - a brand that had been with him since his early days - was particularly special. It wasn’t just a race win; it was a symbolic moment that tied together his roots and his future in the sport.
How do you stay motivated and focused in such a competitive field?
Yeah, look, MotoGP these days is more competitive than it’s ever been. The field is tighter than ever, and if you’re just a couple of tenths off the pace, you’re nowhere. It’s incredibly tricky, but the thing that really motivates me is that I want to be a MotoGP World Champion. When I look back at my career, that’s the ultimate goal I want to achieve.
So far, I think we’ve been doing a decent job, but it’s not enough yet. Myself and my team are constantly pushing, working as hard as we can to find that extra bit of performance to fight further up the field. Last year, finishing fourth in the championship, and fifth this year - it’s alright, but it’s not why I’m here. We’re not stopping, though. We’ll keep fighting, keep working, and hopefully, we’ll get there.
Follow-up:
Motivation is key in any competitive sport, but in MotoGP, where every hundredth of a second counts, maintaining focus is vital. Brad’s relentless pursuit of the title is a reflection of his mindset as a true competitor. Despite his impressive career so far, his hunger for the championship remains the driving
force. He’s not satisfied with just being among the top riders - he’s aiming for the highest achievement in the sport, and that relentless drive keeps him pushing toward his goals, season after season.
What advice would you give to aspiring riders from South Africa?
The best advice I could give to South African riders is to try and get yourself into a competitive series like the Spanish Championship or the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup - one of those races that really showcase your talents. These platforms give you the opportunity to show the world what you’re capable of. Unfortunately, racing here in South Africa, we don’t get the kind of coverage we need to make a big impact.
But if you’re a talented young rider with speed, especially if you’re racing in Europe, you can get noticed and things can change really quickly. So, it’s about getting the right exposure and making sure the world sees what you’ve got.
Follow-up:
Brad’s advice speaks to the importance of visibility in motorsport. Talent alone, as he points out, isn’t always enough. Riders need to be in the right places, racing in the right competitions where they can showcase their skills to a broader audience. For South African riders, it’s about making the leap to the international stage, whether through established series or high-profile development programmes like the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.
If you had to swap your MotoGP bike for a completely different vehicle for one race, what would you pick?
I don’t know if you’ve seen the new KTM Crossbow, but it’s an absolute weapon. I’d definitely love to race that car one day. It’s definitely on my bucket list.
Follow-up:
While Brad’s heart clearly belongs to motorcycles, the prospect of getting behind the wheel of a different kind of performance machine is an exciting one. The KTM Crossbow is a high-performance car that shares some of the speed and precision of his MotoGP bike, making it a natural choice for a motorsport enthusiast like Brad. Perhaps one day, fans will see him pushing the limits in a completely different racing series, showing that his passion for speed isn’t confined to two wheels alone LV
Extreme big-air kiteboarder Lasse Walker has achieved a world-first: jumping over an in-flight airplane. In a flawless display of timing, execution, skill, and trust, Walker soared 15 meters above the water - and above the plane piloted by Luke Czepiela. Dutchman Walker and Polish aerobatic pilot Czepiela had been preparing for more than two years to create this piece of aerial history at Dolphin Beach in Cape Town, South Africa.
Walker said: “We’ve been communicating with each other and had the perfect kicker and timing. Luke was flying low, I jumped over, did the loop with my kite,
and looked straight down into the cockpit. Everything came together.” Taking place not far from the shoreline, Czepiela was able to maintain a reduced speed by aiming directly into a headwind. For the project to be a success, he also had to fly at a low altitude. Czepiela said: “You’re flying a plane. You’re trying not to stall it. The aircraft is not very maneuverable. And then I look to the front, and there’s a dude on the water with a kite above him. He pulls and flies over the plane. It was very surreal.”Being able to fly through the air like a plane is a common dream for many humans, but Walker and Czepiela’s ambitions went over and above LV

As the temperatures start to cool and the leaves turn golden, South Africans transition from summer’s breezy outfits to layered, cozy looks. Autumn in South Africa brings mild days and cooler evenings, requiring a versatile wardrobe that balances warmth and style. Here are the key fashion essentials you need this season:
Lightweight Knits
Autumn is the perfect season for layering, and lightweight knitwear is a musthave. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or merino wool to stay comfortable. A well-fitted cardigan, pullover, or knit dress can be styled up or down for different occasions. Pair your knits with jeans or tailored trousers for a chic, effortless look. For added warmth, layer a turtleneck under a blazer or coat.
Denim Jackets & Blazers
A classic denim jacket or a structured blazer is perfect for Autumn layering. They provide just the right amount of warmth without being too heavy. Choose neutral tones like beige, navy, or classic denim blue for versatility. A well-tailored blazer can elevate a casual outfit, making it suitable for work or an evening out. Consider oversized blazers for a modern touch.
Long-Sleeve Tops & Blouses
Long-sleeve tops in soft fabrics keep you warm while allowing flexibility in styling. Flowy blouses, ribbed tops, or classic button-downs can be paired with jeans, skirts, or tailored trousers for effortless chic. Opt for breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen to stay comfortable throughout the day. Layering these with a vest or a cardigan can add dimension to your outfit.
Midi Dresses & Skirts
Dresses and skirts don’t have to disappear when summer ends. Opt for midi lengths in earthy tones and pair them with ankle boo ts and a light jacket. Flowy, floral patterns can transition beautifully from summer to Autumn with the right accessories. A belted midi dress can define your silhouette, while a pleated midi skirt can add sophistication to your wardrobe.
Ankle Boots & Loafers
Footwear plays a crucial role in Autumn fashion. Ankle boots are a timeless staple, adding sophistication to any look while keeping your feet warm. Loafers and leather sneakers are also great choices for a more casual yet polished appearance. Choose versatile shades like black, brown, or taupe to easily pair with different outfits.
Layering Scarves & Accessories
Scarves are not only practical but also a stylish way to enhance your outfit. Lightweight scarves in soft fabrics add texture and warmth without being too bulky. Statement earrings and structured handbags can elevate your Autumn look effortlessly. Consider adding a felt fedora or a wool beret for a trendy touch.
Earthy & Neutral Tones
Autumn colour palettes lean towards warm neutrals, rich browns, deep greens, and burnt oranges. These shades complement the season’s aesthetic and can be mixed and matched easily for a cohesive wardrobe. Incorporate patterns like plaid and houndstooth for added visual interest.
Tailored Trousers & Jeans
A pair of well-fitted jeans or tailored trousers is essential for Autumn. Darkwash denim and high-waisted trousers pair well with knitwear and structured outerwear for a balanced and stylish look. Wide-leg trousers can add sophistication, while skinny jeans can be tucked into boots for a sleek finish.
Trench Coats & Light Outerwear
A timeless trench coat is perfect for unpredictable Autumn weather. It’s lightweight yet provides enough warmth for chilly evenings. Alternatively, a stylish wool-blend coat or shacket (shirt-jacket) can keep you comfortable and fashionable. A leather jacket can also add a bit of edge to your outfit.
Layered Beauty & Hair Trends
Don’t forget to update your beauty routine for Autumn! Opt for moisturizing skincare, deeper lip shades, and soft, effortless hairstyles like waves or sleek ponytails to complement your cozy outfits. Matte eyeshadows in warm tones can enhance your Autumn aesthetic.
With these Autumn fashion essentials, you can effortlessly stay stylish and comfortable as the season shifts. Whether you’re layering up for crisp mornings or enjoying a mild afternoon, these wardrobe staples ensure you’re ready for any occasion. Embrace the season with confidence and flair, making the most of the beautiful South African Autumn!
As Autumn arrives, the shift in weather brings cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and drier air. This seasonal transition can affect the skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity. To keep your skin healthy and radiant, it’s essential to adjust your skincare routine accordingly. Here are some key tips for Autumn skincare.
Add Antioxidants to Your Routine
Environmental stressors can still impact the skin during Autumn. Incorporating antioxidants like vitamin C or green tea extract in your skincare routine helps combat free radicals and maintain a healthy glow.
Humidify Your Space
Hydration is Key
With lower humidity levels, the skin tends to lose moisture more rapidly. Using a hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid can help retain moisture and keep your skin plump and supple. Additionally, increasing your water intake ensures internal hydration, which reflects on your skin.
Switch to a Gentle Cleanser
A harsh, foaming cleanser may strip the skin of its natural oils, making it feel tight and dry. Opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser with ingredients like aloe vera, glycerine, or chamomile to maintain a healthy skin barrier.
Use a Richer Moisturizer
As the air becomes drier, your skin may require a thicker moisturizer. Choose one with nourishing ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides, or squalane to lock in moisture and prevent dryness.
Incorporate Facial Oils
Facial oils can provide an extra layer of nourishment. Lightweight oils like rosehip, marula, or jojoba oil are excellent choices for keeping the skin soft and hydrated without feeling greasy.
Don’t Skip Sunscreen
Even though the sun feels less intense in Autumn, UV rays are still present and can cause skin damage. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily to protect your skin from premature aging and hyperpigmentation.
Exfoliate Gently
Exfoliation is crucial to remove dead skin cells and enhance the absorption of skincare products. However, over-exfoliating can cause irritation. Stick to gentle exfoliants like lactic acid or enzymatic exfoliators once or twice a week.
Protect Your Lips and Hands
The cooler weather can lead to dry, chapped lips and rough hands. Keep a nourishing lip balm and a hand cream with ingredients like beeswax and vitamin E on hand to maintain softness and hydration.
Indoor heating can further dry out the air, leading to dehydrated skin. Using a humidifier in your living space can help maintain a balanced environment and prevent excessive moisture loss.
Nourish Your Skin from Within
A diet rich in healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants can contribute to healthy skin. Include foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, and green leafy vegetables to support your skin from the inside out.
By making small adjustments to your skincare routine, you can maintain a healthy, radiant complexion throughout the Autumn months. With hydration, protection, and nourishment, your skin will remain resilient against seasonal changes. LV
The classic mantra of sustainability - ‘Reduce, reuse, recycle’ – has never been more of a pertinent call to action than for today’s fashion industry. It’s estimated that only 8% of old clothes are reused and a further 10% are recycled. With more than two thirds of all clothing on the planet made of plastic materials, the result is that most of our discarded apparel ends up in landfills, taking over 200 years to decompose.
A problem so vast may seem insurmountable, but innovative and creative solutions for reuse and resale of clothing are taking hold. In South Africa, second hand fashion has seen significant growth, accounting for an estimated 9.1% of the country’s apparel market revenue. In the UK, that’s likely an even higher number, with an estimated 40% of consumers saying they shop second hand to afford high end brands. It’s likely that this trend will increase globally, as second hand takes over 10% of global fashion sales.
Another way brands are creating revenue from excess is through upcycling, which involves modifying old or outdated existing products to
“Resale is a way of generating business without needing to continually create new materials and extract resources from the planet”- Stella McCartney.
It is estimated by the United Nations Environment Programme that 20% of global water waste and 10% of global carbon emissions are produced by the fashion industry. It is predicted that by 2030, emissions solely from textile manufacturing, are projected to skyrocket by 60%.
produce new synthetically created materials, reducing carbon emissions released from manufacturing and limiting the circulation of synthetic materials which have a greater environmental impact post-production.
make them appealing to consumers again. Circular and sustainable fashion are promoted through upcycling, as existing materials remain in circulation, increasing the clothing’s lifespan and preventing the frequency of items being discarded in landfills. From a design perspective, deconstructing and reconstructing garments gives the clothing a second life and creates new styles, often with a unique fit and fabric composition. Furthermore, upcycling can minimise the need to
Upcycling involves various aspects of the design process and can be labour-intensive, creating scope for high-end upcycled clothing, including unique, once-off pieces which can be sold at a premium. This is unlike second-hand styles which are often heavily discounted. Luxury brands such as Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Loewe, and others, have embraced upcycling— particularly considering the pandemic, which led to approximately USD 179 billion worth of excess inventory from the spring/summer 2020 collections. And it seems that there is a market for it, especially among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, with approximately 68% of these generations reportedly willing to pay more for sustainable and environmentally friendly products.
Intellectual property limitations for upcycling
While upcycling offers many benefits to consumers and the fashion industry,
it raises some interesting legal questions. It is important that businesses engaged in upcycling and those in the fashion industry holding the intellectual property (IP) rights are aware of the IP implications associated with upcycling.
According to the trademark exhaustion principle, once a trade mark owner introduces trademarked products into the market, they can no longer prevent the further commercialisation of the same items by a third party as their ability to control the further distribution of that item is ‘exhausted’. In other words, if a trademark owner sells goods bearing their trade mark, the trade mark owner cannot prevent the purchaser or another person who comes into lawful possession of the goods, from reselling the items under the original trade mark. However, this principle may not apply to upcycled products that use materials displaying trademarks, as it may constitute trademark infringement if the products are materially different from the originals.
In such an instance, if the infringing party uses the trademarks without the owner’s consent and the use of the trademarks could lead to a likelihood of confusion amongst consumers as to the source of the products, there is potential for trademark infringement.
Recent case law
Although the South African courts have not yet dealt with this issue, it is clear that our law prohibits using trade marks in a way that confuses consumers or misrepresents the origin of goods. A few cases in the United States have applied the exception of material difference to the exhaustion principle, in relation to upcycling.
In Chanel, Inc. v Shiver and Duke, LLC, Shiver and Duke, an upcycling company, was refashioning Chanel buttons bearing the iconic CC monogram on chains, earrings and bracelets. Chanel issued a complaint against Shiver and Duke for trade mark infringement, unfair competition and trade mark dilution. The Southern District of New York entered a stipulated judgment in favour of Chanel, permanently preventing Shiver and Duke from upcycling and refashioning authentic Chanel buttons bearing the CC monogram.
Part of the court’s reasoning, aside from the obvious material difference in the buttons not being used on clothing but instead for jewellery, was that the commercial interest in the jewellery produced by Shiver and Duke was in the use of Chanel’s CC monogram and in the use of the Chanel name to promote and market the jewellery. Therefore, the use of the mark was deemed to be trademark infringement.
Louis Vuitton goods customised with stones, tassels, and beading. Sandra Ling deconstructed the Louis Vuitton products and added them to her creations, with Louis Vuitton arguing that her actions fell within the material difference exception. The case was ultimately settled, and Sandra Ling was permanently prevented from refashioning Louis Vuitton items.
In PRL USA Holdings v VNDS Los Angeles Polo Ralph Lauren alleged that VNDS committed trademark infringement and counterfeiting. VNDS, a vintage clothing company, sold a hat it had upcycled from a pair of vintage Ralph Lauren swim shorts. Polo Ralph Lauren argued that VNDS sold its products “in an effort to exploit Ralph Lauren’s reputation in the market [which was] established in the RALPH LAUREN Trademarks and Ralph Lauren Products”. The court issued a default judgment in favour of Ralph Lauren for a permanent injunction against VNDS and damages amounting to USD 800 000.
While these cases emphasise the legal limitations placed on upcycling, litigation in this area should prompt companies to reflect more broadly to ensure that they do not take legal action that may be at odds with their sustainability commitments, thus avoiding damaging their image. Some brands have already found a possible solution to this problem by upcycling their products themselves, allowing them to maintain full control over their processing and avoid third parties doing so. Brands may also consider partnering with upcycles to have greater control while still encouraging the upcycling process.
The exhaustion principle can be seen to support upcycling by enabling consumers to repurpose materials after the first sale, contributing to sustainability and reducing waste. On the other hand, the exception to the principle and other IP limitations can limit the scope of upcycling, conflicting with the goal of reducing waste and promoting sustainable consumption. In continuing to address ESG concerns, upcyclers must ensure that their activities comply with IP laws to avoid legal challenges, as trade mark owners may object to upcycled products, claiming infringement or dilution of their brand. To navigate this principle, it is best to avoid using the original product’s branding in a way that misleads consumers. LV

As the leaves turn golden and the air grows crisp, it’s time to bring the warmth of autumn indoors. This season is all about cozy textures, rich colours, and nature-inspired elements that create an inviting and comforting space. Whether you want a subtle seasonal touch or a full fall makeover, here are some inspiring autumn decor ideas to transform your home.
Warm Up with Earthy Colours
Autumn is synonymous with warm, rich hues. Incorporate deep reds, burnt oranges, mustard yellows, and earthy browns into your decor. Swap out summer pastels for throw pillows, blankets, and table linens in these seasonal shades. For a more elegant look, blend these colours with neutrals like beige, ivory, or charcoal grey.
Layer Cozy Textures
As temperatures drop, layering different textures can make your space feel snug and inviting. Think chunky knit blankets, faux fur throws, and velvet cushions. Wool or jute rugs add warmth underfoot, while linen or flannel curtains create a soft, comforting atmosphere.
Decorate with Natural Elements
Bringing the outdoors in is a key theme for autumn decor. Pumpkins, gourds, dried corn, and pinecones make perfect seasonal centrepieces. A bowl of acorns, cinnamon sticks, or dried orange slices can add both texture and a warm, natural fragrance to your home.
Create an Autumnal Centrepiece
A stunning autumn-inspired centrepiece can instantly set the tone for your dining table. Arrange a mix of pumpkins, candles, and seasonal foliage like eucalyptus, maple leaves, or wheat stalks. Add depth by incorporating wooden trays or metal lanterns for a rustic yet stylish look.
Candlelit Ambiance
As daylight shortens, soft lighting becomes essential. Candles in warm, spicy scents like cinnamon, pumpkin spice, and vanilla can enhance the cozy autumnal feel. Use candle holders in bronze, gold, or amber glass to reflect the warm glow beautifully.
Seasonal Wreaths and Garlands
A fall wreath on your front door is a great way to welcome the season. Opt for one made of dried leaves, berries, and mini pumpkins. Indoors, string garlands of autumn leaves, pinecones, or fairy lights along mantels, staircases, or windows for a festive touch.
Festive Front Porch Decor
Enhance your home’s curb appeal with an autumnthemed porch display. Arrange pumpkins, hay bales, and potted chrysanthemums around your entryway. A rustic wooden sign with a welcoming message or a plaid doormat adds a charming seasonal touch.
Incorporate Rustic Touches
Rustic decor pairs perfectly with autumn’s natural elements. Use wooden trays, woven baskets, and distressed furniture to enhance the cozy aesthetic. Mason jars filled with dried flowers or twigs make simple yet stylish seasonal decor.
Autumn-Inspired Table Settings
For autumn gatherings, dress up your table with seasonal touches like plaid table runners, goldrimmed plates, and copper flatware. Mini pumpkins or personalised name tags with pressed leaves can serve as unique place settings.
Switch Up Your Wall Art
Consider swapping out your usual wall decor for autumn-themed artwork or prints featuring fall landscapes, quotes, or botanical illustrations. Woven wall hangings in warm tones can also add a cozy, bohemian vibe to your space.
With these simple yet elegant decor ideas, your home will be a warm and inviting retreat for the season. So grab a cup of cider, light a candle, and embrace the beauty of autumn! LV
As the temperatures start to cool and the leaves begin to change, preparing your home for Autumn in South Africa becomes essential. While South African autumns are generally mild, the transition from summer to winter can bring unpredictable weather, including cooler nights and occasional rainfall. Whether you live in Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban, here’s how you can get your home ready for the cozy season ahead.

u Check heating solutions: Ensure your air-conditioners, heaters, fireplaces, and gas appliances are in working order before winter arrives.
u Prepare for load shedding: Have backup power sources such as inverters, power banks, and candles ready.
Autumn is the perfect time to refresh your home’s interior and create a warm and inviting atmosphere:
u Earthy colour palettes: Introduce warm hues like deep oranges, browns, and muted yellows to create a cozy ambiance.
u Soft furnishings: Layer throw blankets, plush cushions, and knitted textures to add warmth and comfort.
u Ambient lighting: Use warm-toned LED bulbs, candles, and fairy lights to create a soft, inviting glow.
u Scented elements: Incorporate scented candles, diffusers, or potpourri with warm fragrances like cinnamon, vanilla, and woodsy notes.
u Bring nature indoors: Decorate with dried leaves, pinecones, and seasonal flowers to embrace the Autumn aesthetic.
With fluctuating temperatures, Autumn is a great time to adopt energyefficient habits:
u Open curtains during the day to let sunlight naturally warm your space.
u Layer rugs on tiled or wooden floors to help retain heat and reduce reliance on heaters.
u Use gas or solar alternatives for heating and cooking.
u Unplug appliances when not in use to prevent unnecessary energy drainage.
u Check insulation to ensure your home remains warm as the cooler months approach.
If you have outdoor spaces, Autumn is a crucial time to prepare for seasonal changes:
u Rake fallen leaves regularly to keep your garden tidy and prevent blocked gutters.
u Protect delicate plants from early frost by covering them or moving them indoors.
u Service and store summer outdoor furniture properly to prevent weather damage.
u Ensure rain gutters are clear of debris to handle Autumn showers effectively.
South African autumns may not be extreme, but thoughtful preparation can help you create a cozy and stylish home. By implementing these home and design tips, you can transition smoothly into the cooler months while maintaining comfort and warmth. Enjoy the beauty of the season and make the most of Autumn’s charm!

As the golden hues of summer give way to the crisp, cooler days of autumn in South Africa, it’s the perfect time to embrace seasonal wellness rituals that nourish the mind, body, and soul. With the changing temperatures and shorter daylight hours, aligning your lifestyle with nature’s rhythms can help you maintain balance, boost immunity, and foster inner calm. Here are some essential autumn wellness rituals tailored for South Africans.
South Africa’s autumn harvest offers a rich variety of nutrient-dense, immuneboosting foods. Incorporate locally grown butternut, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and beetroot into warming dishes like stews and soups. Indigenous superfoods such as rooibos tea, baobab powder, and moringa are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that support overall wellbeing. Enjoy warm, spiced drinks made with cinnamon and ginger to promote digestion and circulation as the weather cools.
While the days are getting shorter, South Africa’s autumn climate remains mild in most regions, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Hiking in the Drakensberg, taking a coastal walk along Cape Town’s scenic routes, or enjoying a morning trail run in Johannesburg’s green spaces can keep you active and connected to nature. Sunlight exposure during autumn helps regulate your sleep cycle and boosts mood-enhancing Vitamin D.
With the onset of colder nights, supporting your immune system becomes essential. South African home remedies like honey and ginger infusions, lemon and buchu tea, and eucalyptus steam inhalations can help ward off seasonal colds. Including fermented foods like maas (fermented milk) or probiotic-rich yoghurt in your diet supports gut health, which plays a vital role in immunity.
As the evenings become cooler, cultivate a sense of warmth and relaxation at home. Light scented candles with fragrances of fynbos, sandalwood, or vanilla to create a calming atmosphere. A warm bath infused with lavender or African chamomile essential oils can ease tension and prepare your body for deep, restful sleep. Reading or journaling under a soft throw blanket with a cup of rooibos tea is the perfect way to unwind.
With the seasonal shift, our bodies naturally crave more rest. Aim for at least 7–9 hours of quality sleep by reducing screen time before bed and keeping your bedroom cool and dark. Herbal teas like rooibos and valerian root can promote relaxation, while breathing exercises or guided meditation can help you drift off peacefully.
The drop in humidity during South African autumn can leave skin feeling dry. Switch to a richer moisturizer or natural oils like marula or baobab oil to keep skin hydrated. Exfoliating with a gentle sugar or salt scrub infused with indigenous ingredients like honeybush or African botanicals can rejuvenate the skin. Don’t forget SPF - autumn sun can still be harsh, especially in higher-altitude regions.
Autumn is a time for reflection, making it the perfect season to slow down and focus on mindfulness. Keep a gratitude journal, engage in creative hobbies, or practice yoga to maintain inner balance. Whether it’s taking a quiet walk in Kirstenbosch Gardens or watching an autumn sunset over the Karoo, finding moments to appreciate the beauty of the season can uplift your spirit. By embracing these simple yet effective autumn wellness rituals, you can move through the season with vitality, warmth, and a sense of well-being, fully aligned with South Africa’s unique natural rhythms. Slow-Cooked and Braised Dishes
Cooking meals low and slow allows the flavours to develop deeply, making dishes incredibly satisfying.
• Braised Lamb Shank – Slow-cooked in red wine with garlic, rosemary, and root vegetables, lamb shank becomes fallapart tender and deeply flavourful.
• Chicken and Mushroom Pot Pie – A creamy, savoury filling encased in a flaky, buttery pastry crust makes this a classic autumn comfort food.
• Spiced Butternut Risotto – Made with arborio rice, roasted butternut, and a hint of nutmeg, this dish is creamy, rich, and perfect for the season.
Seasonal Grains and Legumes
Whole grains and legumes provide warmth and nourishment, making them ideal for autumn meals.
• Creamy Polenta with Roasted Vegetables – Smooth, buttery polenta pairs beautifully with roasted mushrooms, squash, and a sprinkle of parmesan.
• Barley and Wild Mushroom Pilaf –Earthy mushrooms combined with nutty barley make for a delicious and wholesome side dish.
• Spiced Chickpea Curry – Slow-cooked chickpeas in a fragrant tomato and coconut milk sauce create a warming, protein-rich meal.
Autumn-Inspired Breakfasts
Starting your day with a warm, comforting breakfast sets the tone for cozy autumn
mornings.
• Spiced Oatmeal – A bowl of oats cooked with cinnamon, nutmeg, apples, and a drizzle of honey is the perfect start to a crisp morning.
• French Toast with Maple Syrup and Pecans – A rich and indulgent breakfast featuring warm, spiced flavours.
• Homemade Granola with Nuts and Dried Fruit – Packed with fibre and crunch, homemade granola featuring pecans, almonds, and dried cranberries is a nutritious way to enjoy autumn’s bounty.
Autumn’s comforting foods are a celebration of warmth, flavour, and nourishment. Whether you’re indulging in a slow-cooked stew, enjoying a fragrant baked treat, or sipping on a spiced drink, the season offers a variety of ways to embrace coziness through food. By incorporating seasonal ingredients and traditional cooking methods, you can make the most of autumn’s rich flavours while nourishing both body and soul. So, as the leaves change and the air turns crisp, gather your favourite seasonal ingredients, slow down, and savour the simple pleasure of comforting autumn meals LV
Skincare in its simplest form has been around for thousands of years. From its early days in ancient Egypt and Rome to its introduction in product form to the masses during the 20th century, the act and regimes surrounding skincare have been a staple for a lot longer than many think. But the skincare of the past bears almost no resemblance to the skincare products and practices of today, and this gap is only going to become more noticeable as we venture deeper into the ever-evolving digital age.
“In what feels like a matter of minutes, technology has become a part of almost every aspect of our lives,”
explains Dr Vanessa Lapiner, owner of the clean beauty brand Root4, “and this has been no different for the skincare industry. The internet and the rapid pace at which digital technologies have come to life have not only transformed the way we approach skincare, but it’s also dramatically shifting the way we formulate and market it too.”
Leaning on her extensive experience in the industry, Dr Lapiner weighs in on the technological innovations and trends that she believes are revolutionising the way we see and approach skincare.
Not very long ago, the purchase of and education around skincare was very much relegated to a physical, in-person experience. If you wanted to find out what skin issue you had or what your best skincare options were, you would have needed to make your way into a store, a salon or a doctor’s room to not only have your skin assessed by a professional but to also understand what products would be available to you.
“Fast forward to today and skincare is no longer limited to the physical,”
says Dr Lapiner. “We now live in a world where in minutes, you can open an app and have your face or even just a selfie analysed by powerful facial recognition technology. Through an analysis of your facial features, skin textures and undertones, these apps can suggest, in real time, a selection of suitable skincare products as well as a number of lifestyle changes you can make to improve the look and health of your skin.”
These apps and their advanced algorithms aren’t, however, just assisting the growing number of timepoor consumers in making decisions about their skincare in the comfort of their own homes or places of work, they are also adding value to the in-store experience too.
“Countless brands are bringing in augmented reality and facial recognition driven technologies to improve their customers’ shopping experiences,” says Dr Lapiner. “Via AI and smart mirrors, customers are given the chance to guide their own in-store experience and receive advice on products and routines that are tailored just to them.”
And it’s not just shopping experiences that are tailored to the individual. Another trend that has been brought on by the digital age is the idea of personalised skincare. Using the data drawn from facial recognition apps and interactive in-store experiences, brands are now able to not only create personalised skincare routines based on an individual skin type, concerns and preferences but they’re also able to work on product customisation.
“Powered by what we know of big data and machine learning techniques,” says Dr Lapiner, “skincare brands are now able to analyse vast amounts of data, including customer preferences, skin types and product reviews to understand the needs of their customer-base better. It’s these data-driven insights that will enable businesses to continually refine their formulas, ensuring their products remain effective, relevant and more individualised.”
But personalisation in the world of skincare doesn’t stop there. The rise of wearable tech, which now often house biometric sensors, is also bringing significant advancements to skin health and general wellbeing monitoring. Many smartwatches are now being built with skin sensors that allow you to track your stress, hydration levels and even sun exposure.
“Having access to data that is collected and analysed in this fashion will allow skincare brands another avenue in which to create personalised routines that can be addressed in real time,” says Dr Lapiner. “But better that,
Dr Vanessa Lapiner
this incredible technology empowers consumers to take proactive measures on their own to ensure their skin is kept healthy.”
Looking into the future, it’s undeniable that technology will continue to play a strong role in the skincare industry.
“Few other industries have adapted as fast to meet the changing needs and preferences of consumers, and it’s this agile and curious nature that will see many more exciting things coming from skincare in the next few years and beyond,” concludes Dr Lapiner. LV

South Africa, with its diverse cultural heritage and rich culinary traditions, offers an array of comforting beverages perfect for warming the soul. Whether it’s a chilly winter’s evening, a nostalgic sip of home, or just a craving for something cozy, South Africans have embraced both traditional and modern drinks that bring comfort and delight. From indigenous brews to international classics with a local twist, here are some of the most beloved comforting beverages in South Africa.
Rooibos Tea – The Nation’s Pride
Arguably South Africa’s most famous drink, Rooibos tea is a caffeine-free herbal infusion that originates from the Cederberg region. With its naturally sweet and slightly nutty flavour, Rooibos is known for its calming effects and numerous health benefits, including antioxidants that support immunity.
Rooibos can be enjoyed in various ways:
• Traditional : Served hot with honey and a dash of milk.
• Spiced Chai Rooibos : Infused with cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger for a warm and aromatic twist.
• Rooibos Latte : Steamed milk and a touch of vanilla transform it into a creamy indulgence.
For many South Africans, Amasi is more than just a drink; it’s a taste of tradition and home. A fermented milk beverage with a tangy, yogurt-like taste, Amasi is often enjoyed on its own or paired with phuthu (crumbly maize porridge) for a wholesome meal. Served cold in summer or at room temperature in winter, Amasi is packed with probiotics, making it not only comforting but also beneficial for digestion and overall gut health.
Hot chocolate is a universal comfort drink, but South Africans love giving it their own spin. Whether using locally made dark chocolate or adding a splash of Amarula , a South African cream liqueur, a cup of hot chocolate can be transformed into a luxurious treat. For an extra-special twist, try a Peppermint Crisp Hot Chocolate - made with melted Peppermint Crisp chocolate, milk, and topped with whipped cream. It’s a nostalgic nod to the popular South African dessert, Peppermint Crisp Tart
Milo and Hot Horlicks – Childhood Favourites
No list of comforting drinks is complete without Milo and Horlicks . These malted beverages are childhood staples in many South African homes, offering a blend of sweetness and warmth.
• Milo is chocolatey and energizing, often mixed with milk and enjoyed either hot or cold.
• Horlicks has a rich, creamy malt flavour and is known for its calming effects, making it perfect for bedtime. Both are often enjoyed with rusks for the ultimate nostalgic experience.
Glühwein – A Winter Warmer
Though of European origin, Glühwein (mulled wine) has found a beloved place in South African winter culture, especially in the Cape’s winelands. This spiced red wine, gently heated with cinnamon, cloves, citrus, and sugar, is a must-have during the colder months and a staple at winter festivals.
For a local touch, some people use Pinotage , South Africa’s signature red wine, as the base, adding depth and fruitiness to the drink.
Boeber is a sweet, creamy milk-based drink that originated in the Cape Malay community. Made with vermicelli noodles, sago, cinnamon, and cardamom, it is typically prepared during Ramadan but is also enjoyed throughout the year as a comforting treat.
Best served warm, Boeber is often garnished with almonds or coconut for added texture and flavour. It’s the perfect drink for a cozy night in.
South African Coffee Culture
South Africa has a thriving coffee scene, with artisanal coffee roasters and café culture growing rapidly. A comforting cup of moerkoffie, a strong and bold brew often made with chicory and enjoyed with condensed milk, remains a favourite in many Afrikaans households.
For something uniquely South African, try:
• Café Amarula: A shot of espresso topped with frothed milk and a splash of Amarula.
• Honeybush Latte: A twist on Rooibos lattes, using Honeybush tea, which has a naturally sweet, floral taste.
Traditional South African ginger beer is a fermented, nonalcoholic drink that’s both refreshing and soothing. Made with fresh ginger, sugar, and a hint of lemon, it’s commonly served at family gatherings and celebrations.
Served warm, ginger beer can be a great remedy for colds and sore throats, while its effervescence and spicy kick add to its charm.
Amarula, South Africa’s signature cream liqueur made from the marula fruit, makes a fantastic addition to warm beverages. One of the most indulgent ways to enjoy it is in an Amarula Hot Toddy, made by mixing Amarula with hot water, honey, and a splash of lemon juice.
This drink is perfect for unwinding after a long day or as a comforting nightcap on a chilly
Spiced chai is loved worldwide, but in South Africa, it often takes on a Cape Malay influence with additional spices like cardamom and cloves. Brewed with black tea and sweetened with honey, this aromatic beverage is ideal for those who enjoy a spiced, warming
For an extra layer of richness, some people prepare it with condensed milk, making it even more indulgent.
Whether you prefer a cup of soothing Rooibos, a nostalgic mug of Milo, or a spiced glass of Glühwein, South Africa offers an incredible variety of comforting beverages that warm both body and soul. Rooted in culture and tradition, these drinks bring people together, evoke cherished memories, and provide solace in every sip.
So, the next time you need a bit of comfort, why not try one of these South African favourites? LV

Building on the success of ZS-BIL, Martin later acquired SAL, a Boeing 727-191, which he transformed into a VIP aero villa - designed for those seeking an exclusive, high-end aviation getaway.
ZS-BIL: The Boeing 737 Hotel Experience
Staying in ZS-BIL is like boarding a flight - except this time, there’s no turbulence, no cramped seating, and no need to fasten your seatbelt. Instead, the aircraft now houses six spacious en-suite cabins, each
thoughtfully designed for comfort and nostalgia.
Each air-conditioned private cabin includes:
• A plush double bed for restful sleep
• En-suite bathroom with premium amenities
• Tea and coffee station for a morning pick-me-up
• Bar fridge to keep your beverages chilled
• A secure safe for valuables
• Guests can also enjoy Aerotel’s shared spaces, which include:
• A scenic deck furnished with original airplane seats, ideal for sunset drinks
• A small communal pool for cooling off in the African heat
• A cozy lounge area to relax and unwind
• Ample parking for roadtrippers
SAL: A VIP Boeing 727 Aero Villa
For those looking for a more private, ultra-luxurious stay, SAL, the Boeing 727191, offers an exclusive three-room, six-sleeper aero villa. This isn’t just a hotel suite - it’s an entire aircraft transformed into a luxury retreat, perfect for families, small groups, or anyone seeking a first-class aviation-inspired escape.
Inside the VIP Aero Villa (SAL):
• Three beautifully appointed rooms with plush bedding
• A spacious lounge and dining area for entertaining or relaxing
• A fully equipped kitchenette, so you can prepare your own meals
• Private deck with breathtaking views of the Klein Drakensberg
• Exclusive access to premium amenities, ensuring a VIP experience
Staying in SAL is a chance to experience aero-luxury at its finest, blending aviation nostalgia with modern indulgence. Whether you
want to unwind in style or celebrate a special occasion, this VIP villa offers privacy, elegance, and an unforgettable atmosphere.
A Morning to Remember Waki ng up in Aerotel, whether inside ZS-BIL or SAL, is an experience in itself. At 7 AM, I made my way to the deck, where I enjoyed Aerotel’s signature breakfast, featuring:
• Freshly baked croissants and muffins
• A variety of hot and cold continental options
• Fresh seasonal fruit kebabs
• Cappuccino
Sipping my cappuccino while taking in the breathtaking views of the Klein Drakensberg, I couldn’t help but feel that this was no ordinary getaway - it was an aviation lover’s dream come true.
Exploring Hoedspruit
One of the best parts of staying at Aerotel is its prime location, offering easy access to some of South
Africa’s most stunning attractions:
• Kruger National Park – A must-visit for an unforgettable Big Five safari
• Blyde River Canyon – The third-largest canyon in the world, perfect for hiking and boat cruises
• Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre – Dedicated to the conservation of cheetahs, rhinos, and other wildlife
• Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre – A sanctuary for rescued and rehabilitated animals
Whether you’re here for the aviation experience, the luxury retreat, or the nearby safari adventures, Aerotel offers a getaway like no other.
Aerotel is more than just a hotel - it’s a one-of-a-kind aviation retreat that brings history, luxury, and adventure together in perfect harmony. Whether you’re staying in the cozy en-suite cabins inside ZS-BIL or indulging in the VIP luxury of SAL, you’re guaranteed an experience that’s both extraordinary and unforgettable.
For aviation enthusiasts, travellers seeking something different, or those looking to elevate their holiday experience, Aerotel is a destination that truly soars above the rest.
After all, how often do you get to sleep in a Boeing 737 or stay in a VIP Boeing 727 aero villa? LV

Designed to promote outdoor living and community engagement, the estate features rehabilitated grasslands, walking trails, and world-class lifestyle amenities. It was the perfect location for the Lambies, aligning with their vision of a home that blends nature, family, and well-being.
Lambie: A Modern, Sustainable Retreat
Situated at 900 Sand Dollar Drive, House Lambie is a striking 400 sqm residence on a generous 1,074 sqm erf. Designed by architect Lisa Rorich, the home is a blend of contemporary elegance and functional living. The lower ground floor includes an extralength double garage, a domestic quarter, and JoJo tank storage. The
heart of the home - the ground floor - features an open-plan kitchen, TV lounge, dining area, scullery, and service yard. A guest WC, bar, braai area, swimming pool, and firepit add to the entertainment appeal. The first floor houses four bedrooms, a cozy PJ lounge, and a luxurious master suite with a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite that embraces an indoor-outdoor design ethos.
The house’s high-end finishes include Italian porcelain flooring, New Zealand Accoya hardwood cladding, and premium fixtures from Hansgrohe and Victoria + Albert. Sustainability was a key consideration, with features such as a 15,000-litre rainwater harvesting system, an 8kVA inverter, a 10kWh battery, and a 14-panel solar system. The home is designed for entertainment and relaxation, with an
Nestled along the pristine coastline of KwaZulu-Natal, Patrick Lambie’s new home at Seaton Estate is more than just a house - it’s a masterpiece of thoughtful design, sustainable living, and an embodiment of the family’s love for nature. The former Springbok flyhalf, along with his wife, Kate, embarked on an ambitious journey to create a home that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings while offering comfort, functionality, and timeless beauty.
integrated Audio Excellence sound system and a built-in gas/charcoal combo braai.
A Home Designed for Living Patrick Lambie’s journey through the home-building process has provided invaluable insights for aspiring homeowners. He emphasizes
sourcing materials locally to avoid delays, maximizing natural light and airflow, and prioritising indoor-outdoor living.
“Our design really brings the outdoors in, allowing us to enjoy the stunning views and coastal breeze every day,” Lambie reflects. Sustainability was also a guiding principle, with the use of durable, natural materials like timber, stone, and offshutter concrete ensuring longevity and aesthetic harmony.
Weylandts
To furnish their sanctuary, the Lambies collaborated with leading furniture and homeware retailer Weylandts. Every piece was carefully chosen to reflect the home’s ethos of craftsmanship, sustainability, and comfort. The outdoor area features the teak-crafted Platform Sofa, designed to withstand the elements while maintaining a minimalist elegance. Inside, the Mallorca Modular Sofa and Organic Munggur Coffee Table bring
warmth and versatility to the main living space.
Kate Lambie’s vision was to create interiors that felt like an extension of nature. Earthy tones, natural textures, and thoughtfully curated pieces define every room. The dining area boasts the Sossusvlei Dining Table, crafted from munggur wood, paired with Punto Dining Chairs inspired by Danish architecture. The family’s relaxation hub - the PJ lounge - features an Easy Living Modular Sofa, complemented by the serene design of the Ginza Media Unit.
Thoughtful details extend to every corner of the house. The guest suite and
baby Harry’s bedroom showcase the intricately woven Coco Range, reflecting the couple’s appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship. The master bedroom’s Cloud Bed Range provides ultimate comfort, while the bathrooms’ Indian-sourced marble and teak bath mats enhance the home’s natural aesthetic.
The landscaping of House Lambie, executed by Bernice Rumble of Land Art Studio and Life Landscapes, mirrors the home’s philosophy of blending seamlessly with nature. Mature trees and indigenous plantings, including over 100-year-old Spekbooms and Ilala palms, create a lush, low-maintenance environment. Large feature trees provide privacy,
while vast lawn spaces offer ample room for the children to play.
The landscaping installation was executed in three phases. First, seven large Phoenix reclinata palms were carefully harvested and placed using a crane truck. Next, Life Landscapes established a lush lawn, flower beds, and rock paths to enhance the retaining walls. The final phase introduced impressive mature specimens such as Baringtonia trees, Bismarkia palms, and Aristida long grasses, seamlessly integrating the home with its natural surroundings.
As Lambie reflects on the homebuilding process, he shares valuable lessons for future homeowners:
m Source Locally: Avoid shipping delays by choosing local suppliers for materials and fixtures.
m Prioritize Natural Light & Airflow: Strategic window placement enhances comfort and energy efficiency.
m Embrace Indoor-Outdoor Living: Design spaces that naturally connect with the outdoors.
m Choose Timeless Materials: Opt for durable, natural materials like stone, timber, and off-shutter concrete.
m Stay on Top of Paperwork: Plan ahead to prevent administrative bottlenecks.
m Design for Your Lifestyle: Prioritize your family’s needs rather than focusing solely on resale value.
m Celebrate the Journey: Take time to appreciate key milestones during the building process.
m Be Flexible: Expect challenges and adapt with patience and a problem-solving mindset.
m Work with Trusted Professionals: Collaborate with an architect and contractor who understand your vision.
m Find a Community that Aligns with Your Values: The right location fosters a lifestyle that enhances wellbeing.
For Patrick and Kate Lambie, their home is more than just a dwelling - it’s an ecosystem, a retreat, and a testament to thoughtful living. From the architecture to the interiors and the landscape, every aspect has been meticulously crafted to enhance their connection to nature and family.
As Patrick transitions from the rugby field to this new chapter, he reminds us that the essence of home lies in the memories created within its walls. “It’s not just about having a house; it’s about building a home that truly reflects who you are.” In Seaton Estate, the Lambies have found their sanctuary - a place where design, nature, and family harmoniously coexist.

If you’re a fan of classic steakhouses, rich history, and hearty portions, then Thundergun Steakhouse in Johannesburg is a mustvisit. Having heard about its legendary status among meat lovers and its reputation for serving some of the best steaks in town, I finally decided to experience it for myself. I must say, it lived up to the hype in every way imaginable.
The moment I walked through the doors, I felt transported to a different era. Thundergun exudes an oldschool charm that you just don’t find in modern restaurants anymore. The dark wooden interior, dim lighting, and vintage memorabilia lining the walls create an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and welcoming. It has that unmistakable “family-owned” feel, where you just know generations of customers have come back time and time again to enjoy a meal in a familiar, comforting space. The lively chatter, the clinking of cutlery, and the smell of sizzling steaks on the grill
filled the air.
Despite how busy the restaurant was, the service was efficient and friendly. Our waiter greeted us warmly, handed us menus, and took the time to go through the specials and recommendations. What struck me most was the level of attentiveness. Even though the restaurant was bustling, our drinks were refilled promptly, and our waiter checked in just the right number of times to make sure we were happy without being intrusive.
One thing that stood out about Thundergun is its diverse crowd. You’ll
see families celebrating birthdays, groups of friends catching up over drinks, and older couples enjoying a classic dinner date. It’s the kind of place where everyone feels at home, whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor like myself.
The Menu – A Meat Lover’s Dream Thundergun is all about meat, and they don’t hold back. The menu is extensive, featuring a wide variety of steaks, ribs, and burgers. While there are non-meat dishes available, let’s be honest - if you’re coming here, you’re probably here for a good steak or rack of ribs.
For starters, we opted for the garlic snails. The snails were rich, creamy, and packed with flavour. It was a
promising start to the meal.
For the main course, I ordered the New York Cut 300g sirloin, cooked medium with creamy garlic sauce, and my partner went for the beef ribs. The moment my steak arrived, I knew I was in for a treat. The portion was massive, the charred grill marks were perfection, and the aroma was irresistible. Cutting into it revealed a perfectly cooked, juicy centre. Each bite was tender, flavourful, and seasoned just right - simple, yet absolutely delicious.
The ribs, on the other hand, were a revelation. Smothered in a smoky, sticky barbecue sauce, they were falloff-the-bone tender. My partner barely needed a knife to cut through them; they simply melted in the mouth.
Served with a side of crispy fries and onion rings, it was the kind of meal that leaves you completely satisfied but still craving more.
What Makes the Steak So Good?
The secret to Thundergun’s success lies in their technique – they cut their own meat, and their steaks are cooked over an open flame, which locks in the juices while giving the meat a slightly smoky, charred crust. Unlike many steakhouses that overcomplicate their seasonings, Thundergun keeps it classic - letting the quality of the beef speak for itself. It’s this simplicity and mastery of grilling that has made them a staple in Johannesburg’s food scene for decades.
No good steakhouse experience is complete without a proper drink to go with it. Thundergun has a solid selection of wines, beers, and cocktails. I opted for a gin and tonic, which paired beautifully with my steak. If you prefer a classic beer, they have several local and imported options to choose from.
By the time we finished our mains, we were incredibly full, but we couldn’t leave without trying dessert. We decided to order an ice-cream with bar-one sauce and my partner opted for the crème brulee. It was the perfect way to end the meal.
One of the things I appreciate most about Thundergun is that it offers great value for money. The portion sizes are generous, the quality is top-notch, and the prices are reasonable, especially compared to some of the high-end steakhouses in Johannesburg. You’re not just paying for a meal; you’re paying for an experience - a tried-and-tested institution that consistently delivers on flavour and satisfaction.
What makes Thundergun more than just a restaurant is its legacy. This steakhouse has been around since 1968, earning a loyal following and becoming a landmark in its own right. It’s the kind of place where parents bring their kids, and years later, those kids bring their own families. There’s something special about dining in a spot that has stood the test of time, refusing to bow to fleeting food trends and instead sticking to what it does best - serving excellent steak in a warm, unpretentious environment.
Without a doubt, yes. Thundergun isn’t just a steakhouse; it’s an experience. From the old-school charm to the outstanding food and welcoming service, it delivers on all fronts. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, craving a proper steak, or just looking for a relaxed, satisfying meal, this is the place to be.
I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic Johannesburg dining experience. Just make sure you go hungryyou’ll want to savour every bite! LV
Mrs. World 2025 is not just a title - it’s a reflection of resilience, passion, and purpose. From representing South Africa on the global stage to advocating for children’s education, Tshego Gaelae’s journey combines beauty, strength, and advocacy. In this interview, Wanita Wallace explores the woman behind the crown - her experiences, values, and the lasting impact she hopes to create during her reign.
Can you take us through your journey to becoming Mrs. World 2025? What were some of the biggest challenges you faced along the way?
It was very exciting jetting over to Las Vegas to represent SA at Mrs World, however there were some challenges around being away from my family for so long and missing my son’s 5th Birthday! But experiences such as this remind us to trust in our support system, knowing that everything will be okay and that I can just focus on the task at hand.
How has the pageant experience changed your life so far, both professionally and personally?
This Pageant experience reminded me to believe in myself a little more. I have learnt to believe in my abilities, in my potential, and in my skills. If I was a betting woman, I would bet on myself.
What were some pivotal moments in your life that led you to enter the Mrs. World competition?
Winning Mrs South Africa gave me the opportunity to represent South Africa at Mrs World.
As Mrs. World 2025, you’re in a unique position to advocate for important causes. What causes are you most passionate about, and how do you plan to raise awareness during your reign?
I am mostly passionate about children having access to basic needs, especially at their school-going age. I also wish to collaborate with both public and private sectors in order to complete community projects that will see a safer commute to and from schools, for children.
How do you balance your duties as a mother, wife, and now Mrs. World? What advice do you have for women trying to balance their personal and professional lives?
I really enjoy being busy, but I have also learnt that the balls we juggle in the air are not all glass. Some
are rubber and will bounce back. It is just a matter of prioritising and committing to our goals and responsibilities, as well as trusting in the support systems we have around us.
You’ve spoken about empowering women and girls. Can you tell us about some specific initiatives or projects you’re involved with in this space?
I am excited about empowering women and girls, but I am more passionate about being an advocate for children’s basic rights. To this end, my Non Profit organization will aim to partner
access that children have to their basic school uniform and needs. I also want to work with local governments to identify community needs that can be addressed, to further the safety of children in our communities. This is also the way I wish to make a long lasting impact.
background influence your approach to representing Mrs. World 2025?
My heritage and culture are important aspects of how I represented South Africa at Mrs World. I was very intentional about looking and feeling African while at Mrs World, so much so that I wore Shweshwe to my Mrs World interview, as well as evening gowns all designed and made by South African designers. It was important for me to showcase South Africa for its vibrance, beautiful culture, and amazing
South Africa has such a rich cultural history. In what ways do you plan to showcase the diversity and beauty of your culture during
I have enjoyed showcasing South Africa clothing and hairstyles throughout my time in Las Vegas at the Pageant and I will continue to do so, including educational and celebratory aspects of
What do you think is the biggest misconception about women who enter pageants? How would you like to challenge that narrative?
The biggest misconception about ladies in Pageants is that they are catty and unsupportive of one another. From my own experience, this couldn’t be any further from the truth. I have received and enjoyed the gift of sisterhood through my pageant experiences, which is a gift that goes even beyond the barriers of crowns and titles.
What does beauty mean to you?
How do you define beauty in today’s society, especially in the context of pageantry?
Beauty is an inside job… as individuals we need to work of having hearts with pure intentions for those around us, in a way that shows care and compassion. That is true beauty. What
is one the outside is purely superficial and can change in an instance. What is on the inside is who we are. That is where we have to focus in order to embody true beauty.
How do you maintain your mental health and confidence, especially given the pressure and expectations that come with being in the public eye?
I stay around people who keep me grounded, like my family and close friends. It is important not to lose sight of one’s true essence, and those who know you best, for me, are essential to the quest of staying authentic. Also, having a strong sense of identity allows me not to be defined by what people say or do.
What advice would you give to young women who may struggle with selfconfidence or body image?
A journey towards self-awareness and self-acceptance is worth more than all the money in the world. Know this, that even the most perfect person in your view, has flaws that they face. It is about how you face those flaws and turn them into your strength that will give you the unshakable power and resilience.
What’s your vision for the future of the Mrs. World competition? Are there any changes or initiatives you’d like to see implemented in the years to come?
I am mostly passionate about children having access to basic needs, especially at their school-going age.
I also wish to collaborate with both public and private sectors in order to complete community projects that will see a safer commute to and from schools, for children.
What are your long-term goals after your reign as Mrs. World? Do you have any specific projects or endeavours you’re hoping to pursue?
I intend on continuing the work of My Children’s Keeper, a nonprofit organisation aimed at furthering the provision of basic school uniform needs of children in underprivileged societies.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I was a member and Head Chorister of the world-renowned Mzansi Youth Choir and sang Alto! That is where I met my husband.
If you could have dinner with any person, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Trevor Noah – to pick on his insights and worldly experiences, and because that would be one dinner that is full of laughs. LV
Building your reputation and network has always been sound career advice, but in today’s unprecedentedly competitive environment, have taken on a new significance as they could become instant dealmakers or breakers when job hunting, a leadership expert says.
“The traditional CV submission and social media job search process is in disarray, which means that the cultivation of a strong network and stellar professional reputation that precedes you is more important than ever,” says Advaita Naidoo, Africa MD at Jack Hammer, Africa’s largest executive search firm.
While there aren’t readily available high-level statistics for the number of applications employers generally receive per vacancy in South Africa, a deep dive into LinkedIn’s applicant counts per job listing is sobering, showing that there are literally thousands of applications
to consider everyone in your work ecosystem as a potential future employer or referral
whenever a single role is advertised.
“Within this context of your application having to compete with thousands of other applications, you need more in your arsenal than qualifications and experience. Your AI keywords can be on point, your CV flawless and your online presentation attractive – but most of your competition for any given role will boast the same.”
This is where your
reputation – good or bad - and networks make the difference, Naidoo says.
“With traditional job boards becoming less effective due to oversaturation, your relationship building efforts become paramount. The bridges you’ve burnt in the past will get you eliminated from the outset. With social media, it has become easier than ever for hiring managers to connect the dots.
“One of the first things hiring managers will do (assuming your application reached their desk), is to have a look at your online presence. Apart from the issue of professional online conduct, they will also look
for connections. Who do you and the manager or company have in common? Chances are they will find something far sooner than six degrees of separation, and therein lies the rub.”
Naidoo says in the past, individuals would mostly take care not to burn bridges with more senior colleagues, managers or clients, while not always taking the same care to be a decent human being towards peers, less “senior” colleagues, or others they come into contact with.
Today, anyone serious about their career must consider their entire ecosystem, she says.
“Any untoward actions can have consequences down the line, and anyone you may have dealt with in the past can impact your future prospects – whether that person was a colleague, an acquaintance, someone you interviewed in the past, someone who interviewed you in the past, the secretary at your first job, a service provider – the possibilities are endless,” says Naidoo.
“It is therefore important to understand that building and maintaining professional relationships can significantly impact your career trajectory – significantly more than in the past. Every interaction counts, from colleagues to clients, as these connections can open doors or close them based on past experiences. Being mindful of how you treat others in your professional ecosystem is crucial, as even seemingly minor interactions can have long-lasting implications,” Naidoo says.
She says people are relying on their professional networks more than ever to source their next job.
“Referrals and personal connections are increasingly essential for landing interviews. It is therefore vital to always conduct yourself as if the people you are engaging with will be in your ecosystem sometime in the future. Treat everyone professionally, with dignity and integrity, regardless of which table you are sitting at.” LV

Skin allergies can be irritating and uncomfortable, causing redness, itching, rashes, and swelling. These reactions happen when the skin comes into contact with something the immune system sees as harmful, even if it’s usually harmless. Common triggers include certain foods, skincare products, fabrics, and even the environment. Understanding these triggers and how to manage them is essential for maintaining healthy skin.
Skin allergies come in different forms, but the most common ones include:
• Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis): Causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. Often linked to asthma or hay fever.
• Contact Dermatitis: Happens when the skin reacts to things like soaps, detergents, fragrances, or jewellery.
• Hives (Urticaria): Raised, itchy bumps on the skin caused by food, medication, or environmental factors.
• Allergic Reactions to Food and Latex: Some people develop skin rashes after eating certain foods or using latex products.
Skin allergies occur when the body reacts to:
• Certain foods (nuts, dairy, shellfish)
• Cosmetic and skincare products (fragrances, preservatives)
• Pollen, pet dander, and dust mites
• Cleaning products (soaps, detergents, fabric softeners)
• Metals like nickel (found in jewellery, zippers, and belts)
While it’s not always possible to avoid skin allergies completely, here are some ways to reduce your risk:
• Know Your Triggers: If you have sensitive skin, check product labels for potential irritants.
• Do a Patch Test: Before using a new skincare or beauty product, test it on a small area of skin first.
• Moisturise Regularly: Dry skin is more prone to irritation, so keeping it hydrated helps.
• Choose Gentle Products: Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic skincare and laundry detergents.
“Many people suffer from skin allergies without realising that simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Identifying triggers and using the right skincare products can help manage symptoms effectively,” says Dr. Judey, a leading expert in dermatological science.
• Wear Protective Clothing: If certain materials or chemicals trigger reactions, wear gloves or long sleeves.
If you experience a skin allergy, relief is available:
• Anti-Itch Creams: Hydrocortisone or antihistamine creams can help soothe irritation.
• Oral Antihistamines: These help reduce itching and swelling.
• Moisturisers: Keeping skin hydrated can prevent flareups, especially for eczema.
• Avoiding Triggers: The best way to manage skin allergies is to stay away from what causes them.
Dr. Judey also advises on the significance of hydration and skincare: “Keeping your skin barrier healthy is key to preventing allergic reactions. Moisturising regularly and choosing gentle, hypoallergenic products can go a long way in protecting your skin.” LV
Between economic upturns and a growing appreciation for the tourism gems available closer to home, staycations aka opting for local travel instead of venturing abroad, have become popular for travellers across the Southern African region.
“Embarking on a getaway just a few hours away is not just convenient and relatively more affordable than going overseas, but also removes the stress of long-haul flights or spending hours in transit,” says Lindi Mthethwa, Regional Director Sales & Marketing at Minor Hotels Travellers, especially those falling within the millennial and Gen-Z age group are discovering the beauty of local destinations that provide both a restful
retreat and an exciting experience. This, says Mthethwa, is because staycations tend to be cost-effective, convenient, and often filled with spontaneous charm, making them an increasingly popular choice for those seeking a quick escape while supporting local economies.
Why South Africans are loving local
According to a recent travel index, Google searches for ‘staycation ideas’ increased
by 33% in 2024 compared to the previous year, indicating that more South Africans are keen to explore common and lesser-known destinations in their own country.
There has also been significant travel in recent years between South Africa and its neighbouring countries, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique which suggests a strong interest among South African travellers in exploring destinations within the continent.
One of the most widely agreed reasons for this is that,
following the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions and health concerns pushed many to rethink their holiday plans. With borders closed and safety becoming a priority, people began seeking vacation inspiration closer to home.
This uptick in local travel is a welcome reprieve for a still recovering tourism sector in South Africa, with hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions experiencing a surge in visitors. “Vacation budgets are being spent within the community, advancing economic growth and supporting small businesses, and in an age of economic uncertainty, a staycation offers both the joy of travel and the comfort of home that can be tailored exactly to your preferences,” adds Mthethwa.
For those eager to explore South Africa beyond the usual tourist hotspots, there are plenty of hidden gems offering unique travel experiences. The charming town of Paternoster on the West Coast, for instance, provides a peaceful seaside escape, known for its whitewashed cottages, fresh seafood, and breathtaking sunsets.
Further inland, the Cederberg Mountains offer dramatic rock formations, ancient San rock art, and a perfect retreat for hiking enthusiasts. In the Eastern Cape, Hogsback enchants visitors with its misty forests, cascading waterfalls, and Tolkien-inspired landscapes.
For nature lovers looking to travel further afield and slightly beyond South African borders, Zimbabwe and Zambia offer unrivalled access to Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Visitors can embark on guided safaris, take sunset river cruises, or experience the thrill of bungee jumping over the Zambezi River. Luxurious stays near the falls, such as those at Anantara Stanley & Livingstone Victoria Falls Hotel in Zimbabwe and The Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara, ensure travellers can fully immerse themselves in the region’s beauty and adventure.
And if an island escape is more appealing, Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago offers unspoiled beaches, world-class diving, and vibrant local culture. Whether it is snorkelling among coral reefs, deep-sea fishing, or exploring traditional island villages, this destination delivers a rich blend of relaxation and discovery.
“From indulging in spa treatments to exploring historical landmarks, hiking scenic trails, or enjoying cultural festivals, staycations allow travellers to tailor their experiences to their personal preferences,” says Mthethwa. “Travelling locally and exploring what’s on offer right on our Southern African doorstep gives travellers access to immersive local experiences that expand our minds and perspectives and make travelling that much more memorable.”
As travel preferences continue to evolve, staycations are expected to remain a top choice for those seeking convenience, affordability, and unique experiences. And with South Africa and its neighbouring countries offering an array of incredible destinations, more travellers are discovering that unforgettable holidays do not always require a passport. LV
