The Gold Standard for What’s Next

In this inaugural issue, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey that brought me here. Publishing a magazine has always been a dream of mine - a dream that lived quietly in the background as I worked through the ranks of the publishing industry. From coordinating promotions to advertising sales, I learned the ins and outs of what makes a magazine tick. Each step along the way was a lesson, preparing me for the day when I would take the leap and start something of my own.

Creating a magazine is much like piecing together a puzzle. Every article, photograph, and design choice contributes to a larger picture, and that picture tells a story. In these pages, I hope you’ll find stories that inspire, inform, and resonate with you. From lifestyle tips and thought-provoking features to stunning visuals, this magazine is a celebration of creativity, community, and curiosity. It’s a labour of love - and I couldn’t be prouder to share it with you.

Of course, this venture didn’t come together on its own. It takes a dedicated team to bring a vision to life. I’m endlessly grateful for their talent and commitment to this project. Each one of them has brought their unique voice and perspective, and together, we’ve created something truly special. I’d also like to thank our advertisers, whose support has made this first issue possible.

But most importantly, I want to thank you, our readers. Your curiosity, enthusiasm, and engagement are what drive us forward. As you flip through these pages, I hope you’ll find moments of connection - whether it’s discovering a new idea, finding inspiration, or simply enjoying a beautifully crafted story.

This is just the beginning. As this magazine evolves, I want it to be a reflection of our readers - a space that sparks conversations, celebrates individuality, and builds a sense of community. Your feedback and ideas are invaluable, so don’t hesitate to reach out and share your thoughts.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Let’s see where it takes us next. Here’s to the first of many issues, and to the stories we’ll tell together.

Till next time!

IG intros teen accounts

Instagram has introduced Teen Accounts, a new feature designed to ensure safer experiences for teens while offering peace of mind to parents. These accounts automatically apply protections that limit who can contact teens, the content they see, and how they interact on the platform. Teens under 16 need parental permission to adjust settings to less strict levels.

Key protections of a teen account include default private accounts, strict messaging limits, restricted sensitive content, and time management tools, such as a 60-minute daily usage notification and Sleep Mode between 10 PM and 7 AM. Additionally, antibullying filters are turned on by default.

Parents can oversee their teen’s experience with features like activity insights, customisable daily time limits, and topic monitoring. Teens can personalise their feed by selecting interest-based topics, while inappropriate or mature content remains hidden.

Instagram is also enhancing age verification to ensure teens receive the appropriate settings, even if they misrepresent their age.

This initiative emphasizes collaboration between Instagram, parents, and experts to balance safety with exploration, fostering a positive and secure environment for young users.

Gold Medal Mindset

How Tatjana Smith is Redefining Success

Beyond the Pool

Olympic gold medallist Tatjana Smith has inspired countless fans with her remarkable swimming career and her grounded, passionate approach to life. From rigorous training schedules to using her platform to advocate for change, Tatjana embodies resilience and determination. Recently retired from professional swimming, she shares insights into her daily life, motivations, and future plans with La Vie magazine.

Q: Can you describe a typical day in your life?

A: As an athlete, my day started early—waking up at 6am, hitting the pool by 6h45am, and having a two-hour session. Midday was for recovery activities like ozone therapy, massages, or rest, preparing for another tough two-hour session in the afternoon. Evenings were for dinner, relaxing, and getting to bed for the next day.

Now, post-athlete life, I still follow a training routine, as I enjoy staying active. My days also include speaking engagements and exploring new interests.

Tatjana’s rigorous schedule reflects the discipline required to compete at the highest level. Yet, her transition to life after swimming highlights her adaptability and commitment to staying balanced and healthy.

Q: How do you like to unwind?

A: Spending time with family and friends, enjoying coffee, good food, or playing board games. These activities keep me present and grounded.

Despite the high-pressure world of elite sports, Tatjana finds joy in simple, meaningful moments with loved ones, emphasizing the importance of staying connected.

Q: What are your passions and hobbies?

A: My passion during my swimming career was, of course, swimming. Now, I focus on using my platform to support women and athletes in individual sports, advocating for better opportunities. I also enjoy staying healthy through workouts and spending quality time with loved ones.

Tatjana has shifted her focus to making a difference for the next generation of athletes, especially women, in sports. Her advocacy stems from her own journey and the challenges she overcame.

Q: Who has inspired you the most, both in and out of the pool?

I don’t have a single role model, but I draw inspiration from both ordinary people who show kindness and perseverance, and athletes who work hard and love their sport, regardless of outcomes.

Her admiration for the everyday hero shows Tatjana’s humility. Whether it’s a teammate or someone striving in their personal lives, she values dedication and kindness over fame.

Q: Do you enjoy traveling? Any favourite destinations?

A: I enjoy traveling but not the flying part! My favourite trips include Rio, where I had time to explore, and Paris after the Olympics, which was incredible.

While swimming took her across the globe, Tatjana’s favourite travel memories are from times she could pause and soak in the culture, a rarity during her competitive career.

Q: How did you stay motivated during tough times in your career?

A: I reminded myself of my “why”—using my talents to glorify God, inspiring others, and proving that success is possible even from South Africa without going abroad.

Tatjana’s faith and pride in her South African roots played a central role in her career, fuelling her drive and resilience through challenges.

Q: How do you handle the pressure of being an Olympic gold medallist?

A: It’s a daily process. I remind myself that swimming is what I did, not who I am. Managing expectations—both external and internal—is key, and I try not to let them define my identity.

Tatjana’s grounded perspective helps her navigate the expectations that come with being a global icon, keeping her identity separate from her achievements.

Q: What is the biggest life lesson you learned from swimming?

A: Achievements alone shouldn’t drive your passion. It’s about finding happiness in the purpose of what you do, not just in success. For me, being happy led to better performance and fulfilment.

Her philosophy, “A happy swimmer is a fast swimmer,” reflects her belief in the importance of joy and purpose over the relentless pursuit of accolades.

Q: What are your plans for the future after retiring?

A: I’m still figuring it out. Right now, I’m taking things day by day, adjusting to life after swimming, and exploring new passions outside the sport.

Tatjana’s approach to retirement shows wisdom and patience, as she embraces the process of self-discovery and focuses on the opportunities ahead.

Q: What kind of movies, books, or podcasts do you enjoy?

A: I love feel-good rom-com movies. A recent impactful book I read was Don’t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table, which emphasizes controlling negative influences in your life.

Her media choices reveal her optimistic and reflective nature, seeking both lightheartedness and meaningful personal growth.

Q: How do you recharge mentally?

A: Spending time with family and friends, enjoying simple moments, or even training helps me recharge and stay grounded.

Even in retirement, Tatjana stays active and values the relationships that give her strength and perspective.

Tatjana journey is an inspiring testament to perseverance, humility, and purpose. From the discipline of elite swimming to her emerging role as an advocate and public figure, she continues to make waves far beyond the pool. LV

In the world of glitz and glamour, a celebrity’s handbag serves as a fascinating window into their everyday life. A peek inside the bag of South African actress and TV presenter Jessica Nkosi reveals her passion for skincare and her commitment to keeping pesky germs at bay.

Here are some of the things we’ve found!

• Bepanthen replenishing daily body lotion – which is also amazing on the hands.

• Hand sanitiser – because of all the seasonal germs (and another reason why she needs the Bepanthen moisture for her hands).

What’s in Jessica Nkosi’s handbag?

• Bepanthen nappy cream – “great for dry chapped lips” (Jessica says if you can use it to hydrate a baby’s sensitive skin, then why not her as well?)

• Metal straws and a cleaner – to save the earth, she says, and because she hates messing up her lipstick, the straw comes in handy.

• Air pods – always a must.

• A make-up bag with those daily touch-up essentials that all women need for healthy-looking skin.

• A nifty fold-up fan for when it gets hot, which also doubles as a torch.

• Vitamins – she still takes pregnancy vitamins, because they have all the good stuff in them which are an added value for her skin.

With her hectic schedule and frequent travels, Nkosi’s handbag perfectly reflects her dedication to staying clean, cool, glamorous, and moisturized every day! LV

Sun Protection and Glow

Your Guide to Radiant Skin

When it comes to beauty, radiant skin is always in style. But achieving a lasting glow requires more than just the right products; it starts with protecting your skin from the sun. Harmful UV rays not only cause premature aging but can also lead to serious health concerns. Balancing sun protection with the desire for luminous skin is essential—and easier than you might think.

Why Sun Protection Matters

Sunlight is essential for vitamin D production and improving our mood, but overexposure can wreak havoc on the skin. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, particularly UVA and UVB rays, can penetrate the skin’s layers, leading to damage such as wrinkles, sunspots, and even skin cancer. These rays break down collagen and elastin, reducing skin’s elasticity and resulting in dull, tired-looking skin.

The solution? A good-quality sunscreen. Dermatologists recommend using a broadspectrum SPF of at least 30 every day, even during winter or cloudy days. Applying sunscreen isn’t just a summer ritual; it’s a year-round commitment to your skin’s health and glow.

How to Achieve a Natural Glow

• Hydration is Key

Protecting your skin from the sun is only half the battle. To keep your skin luminous, hydration is critical. Use lightweight moisturizers with hyaluronic acid to retain water in the skin and give it a plump, dewy appearance.

• Incorporate Antioxidants

Free radicals from UV exposure and pollution can dull the skin. Incorporate antioxidant-rich serums, like those with vitamin C or E, to neutralize these effects and brighten your complexion. Many sunscreens now include antioxidants for an extra layer of protection.

• Exfoliate Wisely

Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells,

allowing your glow to shine through. However, avoid over-exfoliating, as it can compromise the skin barrier, making it more susceptible to sun damage. Stick to gentle exfoliants and follow up with sunscreen.

• Opt for Sun-Friendly Makeup

Today’s beauty industry offers a range of products that blend sun protection with beauty. Tinted moisturizers with SPF, foundations with built-in sunscreen, and glowenhancing primers let you protect your skin without sacrificing your desired finish.

• Reapply and Rejuvenate Remember, sunscreen wears off after a few hours, especially if you’re sweating or spending time outdoors.

Keep a spray-on or powder SPF in your bag for easy reapplication. After sun exposure, pamper your skin with soothing products like aloe vera gel or sheet masks to replenish lost moisture.

By prioritizing sun protection while nourishing your skin, you can confidently enjoy the outdoors without compromising your glow. A healthy radiance is more than skin-deep— it’s a reflection of care, consistency, and protection. Start incorporating these steps today, and your future self will thank you for the investment in lasting beauty.

THE TRAVELLER

South Africa’s festival scene is as diverse as its people, reflecting a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and contemporary influences. From music festivals like Oppikoppi and Rocking the Daisies to cultural celebrations like the Cape Town Carnival and the Zulu Reed Dance, each event offers a unique backdrop for vibrant self-expression through fashion. Festival fashion in South Africa is more than just a way to dress; it’s a statement, a cultural nod, and a celebration of individuality.

A Vibrant Celebration of Style and Culture

Blending Tradition with Contemporary Flair

One of the defining characteristics of South African festival fashion is the seamless blend of traditional attire with modern styles. Traditional fabrics like shweshwe, often used in Xhosa ceremonies, are being repurposed into stylish, festivalready outfits. These colourful, geometricpatterned materials are transformed into jumpsuits, crop tops, and flowing skirts that honour cultural heritage while embracing modern aesthetics.

Zulu beadwork, another staple of South African tradition, often makes an appearance at festivals. From bold, beaded necklaces to intricate headpieces, these accessories not only add a pop of colour but also carry cultural significance. Young festival-goers often mix these traditional elements with urban streetwear, creating a fusion that feels uniquely South African.

Celebrating Individuality through Bold Choices

South African festivals are a playground for bold and fearless fashion choices.

Neon colours, sequins, and metallic fabrics

are popular among revellers who want to stand out. Outfits often lean toward the extravagant, with feathers, fringe, and over-the-top headpieces making frequent appearances.

Music festivals like Ultra South Africa and Afropunk Johannesburg encourage experimental styles. Afropunk, in particular, has become synonymous with avantgarde fashion, where attendees embrace Afrocentric aesthetics mixed with futuristic and punk influences. Think bold prints, edgy leather pieces, and vibrant hairstyles, often celebrating natural textures and creative hair art.

Sustainability Takes Centre Stage

As global conversations around sustainability grow louder, South African festival fashion is beginning to reflect these concerns. Upcycled and second-hand outfits are gaining popularity, with many festival-goers opting for vintage finds or repurposing old clothes into fresh designs. The trend of renting outfits for specific events has also caught on, reducing waste while allowing attendees to make a

statement without overconsumption. Local designers are stepping up to the plate, producing sustainable festival wear that supports ethical practices. Brands like Lukhanyo Mdingi and Rich Mnisi, known for their innovative designs, often find their pieces gracing the festival grounds. Their work not only highlights South African creativity but also sets a standard for mindful fashion.

Accessories and Details: The Final Touch

No festival outfit is complete without accessories, and in South Africa, the possibilities are endless. Wide-brimmed hats, colourful sunglasses, and beaded bags are just the beginning.

A Canvas for Creativity

Festival fashion in South Africa reflects the country’s diversity and vibrancy. Each outfit tells a story, whether it’s a nod to heritage, a bold statement of individuality, or a commitment to sustainability. In South Africa, fashion is more than just clothing; it’s an art form, a celebration, and a powerful medium for self-expression. LV

A Homeowner’s Guide toSummer

According to the South African Weather Service, both minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to exceed normal levels. Possible La Niña conditions may result in heavy rains, particularly in the central and eastern parts of the country.

Even if there are no extreme weather events, anticipating soaring temperatures, seasonal rain or wind, depending on where you are in the country, might save proactive homeowners some money and certainly make summer more enjoyable.

According to Gavyn Letley from specialist loans provider, DirectAxis: “Setting up your home for summer need not cost you a fortune. Some simple upgrades can make it more comfortable while basic maintenance could prevent costly repairs.”

Letley shares some tips to consider over the summer season:

In summer, the braai allows South Africans to escape the heat and confines of their kitchens and enjoy the relaxed informality of cooking, eating and entertaining outside.

Depending on the set-up, getting the braai ready for summer may mean more than just washing the grid to remove any build-up of rust or bacteria. If it has a chimney, check for soot build-up. Chimney fires can be dangerous, so if in doubt, get the chimney swept.

On gas braais the hoses, washers and cylinders must be checked for wear and tear. If in doubt get these replaced.

After the braai, the pool is probably the next priority for those lucky enough to have one. If you’ve kept up some basic maintenance over winter, preparing it for summer should only involve cleaning out the leaves and checking the pH and

Although climate change is making accurate weather predictions more difficult, forecasters expect this summer to be hotter than average with the possibility of more frequent and intense heatwaves.

chlorine levels. Saltwater pools may need the chlorine generator cleaned and some additional salt.

You’ll probably need to spend more to make it swimmable if it’s gone green over winter. It’s advisable to take a water sample to a pool outlet and let them recommend the best remedy rather than spending lots of money on treatments that may not work.

In summer rainfall areas, blocked or broken gutters and leaky roofs can ruin eves and ceilings; and heavy downpours may cause additional interior damage. Some straightforward maintenance will prevent these issues. If you’re not confident about doing it yourself, gutter-cleaning services are relatively affordable, and most will also check the roof for you.

Seasonal strong winds can also be a problem, particularly in coastal regions. Trimming the trees around your home prevents wind-blown branches from damaging the roof, gutters, windows, satellite dishes, walls and fences. Shothole borer weakens trees and kills branches, making them more susceptible to wind. You can do basic trimming yourself but get an expert for larger branches and trees. Costs range from R500 upwards depending on the complexity of the job and the amount of material that needs to be removed.

While you’re in the garden check the exterior of the house. Paint provides crucial protection against the elements. It’s easier and cheaper to deal with small areas of chipped and peeling paint as you

notice it, especially on wooden or metal features, rather than waiting until you have to replace them or repaint the house.

Moving inside, slatted blinds or light curtains will help keep out direct sunlight. This will keep the interior cooler and prevent sun damage to furniture and carpets. Fans are another popular way of keeping cool. Depending on your décor, classic ceiling fans can add a nice touch. Alternatively, selfstanding pedestal fans can be moved from room to room.

Air conditioners are a more expensive solution. These range from simple units for single rooms or small spaces, to ducted systems that cover the whole house. Inverter air conditioners are the most energy-efficient. Costs vary depending on the system and size of the home and could be anything from R20 000 to R65 000 depending on the specifications, requirements, and area.

“Being proactive, doing preventative maintenance and making your home more comfortable will ensure that you enjoy summer more, and importantly, you may save some money over the long term,” says Letley. LV

As Daily continues to grow, the brand remains committed to its founding mission: to make beautiful, enduring, and sustainable design accessible to all. From timeless aesthetics to ethical practices, Daily is poised to make a lasting impact on how South Africans furnish their spaces.

Coastal chic interiors have become a prominent trend in South Africa, reflecting the country’s stunning coastline and laid-back lifestyle. With more than 2,500 kilometers of shoreline, South Africa offers an endless source of inspiration for creating breezy, stylish, and functional living spaces that echo the tranquility of the ocean. Coastal chic is not merely a design choice; it’s a lifestyle that celebrates natural beauty, sustainability, and comfort. Whether you’re decorating a beachfront home in Plettenberg Bay or bringing the coastal vibe to an urban apartment in Cape Town, coastal chic interiors allow you to seamlessly blend the natural world with modern sophistication. Here’s an exploration of the defining elements, local influences, and tips for crafting this timeless style in South African homes.

Key Elements of Coastal Chic Design

Coastal chic is characterized by its light, airy atmosphere, natural textures, and understated elegance. Here are the defining elements:

1. Colour Palette: A Symphony of Neutrals and Blues

At the heart of coastal chic design is a colour palette inspired by the ocean and sand. Think soft whites, creams, beiges, and varying shades of blue. In South Africa, these colours often take on a unique twist, incorporating earthy tones inspired by the country’s fynbos vegetation and dramatic coastal landscapes.

2. Natural Materials

Wood, rattan, linen, and cotton are essential in coastal chic interiors. In South Africa, locally sourced materials like reclaimed wood

or woven grass baskets bring authenticity and sustainability to the design. The inclusion of driftwood or raw stone elements pays homage to the natural surroundings.

3. Layered Textures

Coastal chic spaces rely heavily on textures to create warmth and interest. Layering rugs, throw blankets, and cushions in natural fabrics can elevate the aesthetic. In South Africa, traditional shweshwe or printed textiles can be integrated for a localized flair.

4. Light and Airy Spaces

Maximizing natural light is crucial for achieving the coastal look. Large windows, open-plan layouts, and light curtains or blinds help bring the outdoors in. In South Africa, sliding glass doors that open onto a patio or veranda are often used to create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

5. Subtle Decor

Accessories in a coastal chic home are minimal and meaningful. Nauticalinspired elements like coral, seashells, or framed ocean photography are common. South African designers often incorporate

locally crafted ceramics or artwork to lend a regional touch.

South African Coastal Influences

South Africa’s diverse coastline plays a pivotal role in shaping the coastal chic aesthetic. From the rugged cliffs of the Western Cape to the tropical beaches of KwaZulu-Natal, each region contributes its unique flavour to this style.

1. Cape Dutch Architecture

The Western Cape’s Cape Dutch homes with their whitewashed walls, thatched roofs, and gables lend themselves beautifully to a coastal chic transformation. Inside, their high ceilings and open spaces provide the perfect canvas for light and breezy interiors.

2. Tropical Inspiration in KwaZulu-Natal

In the subtropical coastal areas of KwaZulu-Natal, the lush vegetation and humid climate call for materials like bamboo, wicker, and light fabrics. The coastal chic interiors here often blend with tropical elements, including palm prints and greenery.

3. Raw and Rugged Appeal

In regions like the Eastern Cape, the

untouched beaches and raw, rugged terrain inspire a more organic approach to coastal chic. Homes here often embrace earthy tones, weathered wood, and minimalist decor to reflect the natural surroundings.

Tips for Creating Coastal Chic Interiors in South Africa

1. Choose Sustainable Options

South African homeowners are increasingly focused on sustainability. Opt for furniture made from reclaimed wood, textiles woven by local artisans, and decor that supports ethical craftsmanship.

2. Bring in Local Flair

Incorporating South African heritage into coastal chic interiors adds depth and uniqueness. Consider Nguni hides as rugs, pottery from local artisans, or beaded accents to merge global trends with regional charm.

3. Celebrate Indoor-Outdoor Living

The South African climate encourages a strong

flow between your patio and living room.

4. Embrace Imperfection

Coastal chic is about a lived-in, relaxed vibe rather than polished perfection. Weathered wood finishes, imperfect ceramics, and handwoven textiles add character and authenticity.

5. Use Statement Lighting

Lighting fixtures can double as decor in coastal chic spaces. Wicker pendant lights, shell

The Importance of Hydration

Hydration is one of the most vital aspects of maintaining good health, yet it is often overlooked in our daily routines.

Water makes up about 60% of the human body and plays a critical role in nearly every biological function. From regulating body temperature to supporting cellular processes, staying properly hydrated is key to living a healthy and active life. Understanding the importance of hydration, recognising the signs of dehydration, and incorporating simple strategies to maintain fluid balance can significantly improve overall well-being.

Why Hydration Matters

Water is indispensable for the body to function properly. It acts as a medium for chemical reactions, facilitates digestion, transports nutrients, and eliminates waste.

Here are some of the key roles water plays in the body:

Regulating Body Temperature

Water helps maintain a stable body temperature by dissipating heat through sweat. In hot weather or during exercise, sweating prevents overheating, but it also increases water loss, making hydration even more critical.

Supporting Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

Water is essential for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. It helps dissolve vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, ensuring they are transported to cells for energy and repair.

Removing Waste

The kidneys rely on water to filter and remove waste products from the blood through urine. Without enough water,

waste removal slows, which can lead to kidney stones and other complications.

Enhancing Physical Performance

Dehydration can impair strength, endurance, and coordination. Even mild dehydration—losing just 1-2% of body weight in fluids—can lead to reduced performance and increased fatigue.

Maintaining Cognitive Function

Hydration is also essential for mental clarity and focus. Dehydration has been linked to headaches, mood swings, and impaired concentration.

Recognising Dehydration

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. Early signs include thirst and dry mouth. Severe dehydration can result in dizziness, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and even heatrelated illnesses.

Children, older adults, and those who are physically active or live in hot climates are particularly vulnerable to dehydration.

How Much Water Do You Need?

The amount of water required varies from person to person based on factors like age, gender, activity level, and climate. A general guideline is to drink 8-10 glasses (2-2.5 litres) of water daily. However, those who exercise or spend time in hot weather may need more to replace lost fluids.

Tips to Stay Hydrated

• Start Your Day with Water

Drink a glass of water in the morning to kickstart hydration after a night’s sleep.

• Carry a Water Bottle

Keep a reusable water bottle handy to make drinking water more convenient throughout the day.

• Incorporate Hydrating Foods

Add water-rich fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges to your meals.

• Monitor Your Intake

Use apps or simple reminders to track how much water you consume daily.

• Listen to Your Body

Thirst is a natural indicator that your body needs more fluids. Don’t ignore it.

Hydration is a cornerstone of health and well-being, influencing everything from physical performance to cognitive function. By staying mindful of your fluid intake and adopting simple habits, you can ensure your body remains hydrated and functions at its best.

Water is life—so make it a priority to drink up and stay hydrated. Your body will thank you for it.

The Art of Relaxation:

Techniques for Stress Relief and Mindful Living

In today’s fast-paced world, stress and anxiety have become common challenges, impacting mental and physical well-being. Relaxation techniques offer an effective way to manage stress, restore balance, and improve overall health. These techniques help calm the mind, relax the body, and create a sense of peace, allowing you to navigate daily life with greater resilience and clarity.

Whether you’re dealing with work pressures, personal challenges, or simply need a moment to reset, incorporating relaxation practices into your routine can have transformative effects. Here’s an in-depth look at some of the most effective relaxation techniques and how to make them a part of your lifestyle.

Why Relaxation is Important

Relaxation is not just about leisure; it’s a critical component of physical and mental health. Chronic stress can lead to numerous health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, digestive problems, and weakened immunity. It can also contribute to anxiety, depression, and burnout. Relaxation techniques work by activating the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the “rest and digest” system. This counteracts the stress response, lowering heart rate, reducing cortisol levels, and promoting feelings of calmness and well-being.

1. Deep Breathing Exercises

One of the simplest and most effective relaxation techniques, deep breathing helps calm the nervous system and focus the mind.

How to Practice Deep Breathing

• Find a quiet space and sit comfortably.

• Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four, filling your lungs completely.

• Hold your breath for a count of four. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six.

• Repeat this cycle for five to ten minutes.

Deep breathing is easy to incorporate into your daily routine and can be practiced anywhere, from your desk at work to your bed before sleep.

2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)

Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a technique that involves tensing and relaxing different muscle groups in the body to release tension and promote relaxation.

How to Practice PMR

• Start by sitting or lying down in a comfortable position.

• Beginning with your feet, tense the muscles as tightly as you can for a count of five.

• Slowly release the tension and notice the sensation of relaxation.

• Move upward through your body, tensing and relaxing each muscle

group, from your legs and abdomen to your arms, shoulders, and face. PMR is particularly effective for reducing physical symptoms of stress, such as muscle tightness and headaches.

3. Meditation and Mindfulness

Meditation is a practice that trains the mind to focus and fosters a state of awareness and tranquillity. Mindfulness, a form of meditation, emphasizes staying present in the moment without judgment.

How to Practice Mindfulness Meditation

• Sit in a quiet place with your back straight and hands resting on your lap.

• Close your eyes and focus on your breath, observing each inhale and exhale.

• When your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your breath.

• Start with five minutes daily and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable.

Research has shown that regular meditation can reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance emotional wellbeing.

4. Yoga and Stretching

Yoga combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation to promote relaxation and flexibility. Stretching exercises can also release tension and improve circulation.

How to Practice Yoga for Relaxation

• Attend a beginner’s yoga class or follow online videos focusing on restorative poses like Child’s Pose, Corpse Pose, or Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose.

• Incorporate gentle stretches into your routine, such as neck rolls, forward folds, and spinal twists, to release tension in tight muscles.

Yoga’s holistic approach makes it an excellent practice for both physical and mental relaxation.

5. Visualization and Guided Imagery

Visualization involves using your imagination to create calming mental images, helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Guided imagery, often led by a therapist or audio recording, takes this a step further with detailed scenarios designed to evoke peaceful feelings.

How to Practice Visualization

• Sit or lie down in a comfortable position and close your eyes.

• Imagine yourself in a serene setting, such as a beach, forest, or mountain.

• Focus on the sights, sounds, and

sensations of the environment, such as the sound of waves or the warmth of the sun.

Visualization is particularly effective when combined with deep breathing or soft background music.

6. Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to promote relaxation and improve mood. Scents like lavender, chamomile, and sandalwood are known for their calming properties.

How to Use Aromatherapy

• Add a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser to fill your space with a soothing aroma.

• Mix essential oils with a carrier oil for a relaxing massage.

• Add a few drops to a warm bath for a spa-like experience.

Aromatherapy can be a simple yet powerful way to enhance your relaxation routine.

7. Spending Time in Nature

Connecting with nature has been proven to reduce stress and improve mental well-being. Activities like walking in a park, hiking in the mountains, or simply sitting in a garden can have a calming effect.

Tips for Outdoor Relaxation

• Leave your phone behind to fully immerse yourself in the experience.

• Practice mindfulness by observing the sights, sounds, and smells around you.

• Pair your time in nature with deep breathing or meditation for a double dose of relaxation.

8. Creative Activities

Engaging in creative hobbies like painting, writing, or playing music can be a therapeutic way to unwind. These activities allow you to express emotions, focus your mind, and find joy in the process of creation.

Relaxation techniques are invaluable tools for managing stress and enhancing overall well-being. Whether it’s through deep breathing, yoga, or spending time in nature, finding the methods that resonate with you is key. Start small, experimenting with one or two techniques, and gradually build a relaxation routine that fits your lifestyle.Incorporating relaxation into your daily life not only helps reduce stress but also fosters a deeper connection with yourself, allowing you to face life’s challenges with calmness and clarity. Take time to unwind—you deserve it. LV

Summer Cool Drinks and Cocktails

1. Rooibos-Based Creations

Rooibos, a naturally caffeine-free tea native to South Africa, is a favourite base for summer drinks. Infused with antioxidants and a slightly sweet, earthy flavour, it can be brewed and chilled to create refreshing iced teas. Popular variations include rooibos iced tea with lemon and mint, or tropical renditions mixed with pineapple and passionfruit juice.

For a twist, rooibos forms an excellent cocktail base. The “Rooibos Mojito,” for instance, combines rooibos tea, rum, lime, sugar, and mint, offering a uniquely South African take on a classic mojito.

2. Fruity Mocktails

South Africa’s warm climate supports the growth of vibrant, juicy fruits

that make for ideal summer drinks.

Watermelon coolers, made by blending fresh watermelon with lime juice and a touch of mint, are a staple at barbecues and pool parties. Mango lassis—yogurtbased drinks infused with ripe mango and a dash of cardamom—are another cooling option.

Cucumber and lemon coolers are also gaining popularity. This simple drink blends cucumber juice, lemon, and a splash of soda water, creating a hydrating and sophisticated option for hot days.

3. Classic South African Cocktails

South Africa has its own classic cocktails, many of which pay homage to local ingredients and traditions. The “Springbok,” a bright green cocktail

As the South African summer approaches, thoughts of balmy afternoons and sunny beaches naturally turn to refreshing beverages. South Africa’s diverse culture and abundance of fresh local ingredients have inspired a range of drinks that cater to all tastes—from invigorating nonalcoholic options to sophisticated cocktails. Here’s a celebration of South Africa’s favourite summer drinks to keep you cool under the scorching sun.

named after the national rugby team, layers crème de menthe and Amarula, a creamy liqueur made from the marula fruit. This drink is a favourite for its patriotic flair and indulgent flavour. Another beloved option is the “Amarula Sunset,” a mixture of Amarula, orange juice, and grenadine. The result is a creamy yet tangy drink that perfectly captures the colours of a South African summer evening.

4. Craft Gin and Tonic Variations

South Africa’s craft gin industry has boomed in recent years, with local distilleries producing gins infused with indigenous botanicals like fynbos, buchu, and honeybush. Summer is the perfect time to explore these gins in creative variations of the classic gin and tonic.

For a local touch, pair a fynbos-infused gin with tonic water and garnish with fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary, along with citrus slices. For a fruitier option, try a gin and tonic enhanced with blueberries, strawberries, and a sprig of mint.

5. Savoury and Spiced Beverages

For those who prefer savoury flavours, tomatobased drinks like the Bloody Mary are excellent summer companions. South Africans often elevate this classic with local ingredients, such as a spicy chutney rim or a splash of biltong-infused vodka. Another favourite is the spicy ginger beer, a homemade or craft-brewed drink that pairs ginger’s heat with the refreshing fizz of soda. It can be enjoyed on its own or mixed with rum for a vibrant cocktail.

6. Wine Cocktails

South Africa is internationally renowned for its wine, and the summer season is a wonderful time to incorporate it into cocktails. Sangria made with South African Pinotage or Chenin Blanc is a

popular choice. The addition of seasonal fruits like peaches, berries, and citrus transforms these wines into festive, refreshing beverages. Another favourite is the “Wine Spritzer,” which combines white or rosé wine with soda water and fresh fruit for a light, bubbly drink perfect for lazy afternoons.

7. Milkshakes with a Twist For families or those with a sweet tooth, milkshakes take centre stage during summer. Classic flavours like chocolate and vanilla are staples, but South African milkshakes often include exotic local ingredients. For example, a rooibos-infused milkshake or one made with Amarula liqueur offers a uniquely local taste. Ice cream floats with soft drinks or ginger beer are also crowd-pleasers, offering a nostalgic treat for all ages.

8. Creative Slushies

Slushies, whether alcoholic or non-alcoholic, are a fantastic way to stay cool. Frozen margaritas made with fresh

lime and salt-rimmed glasses are a summer cocktail staple. Non-alcoholic versions using pureed mango, pineapple, or mixed berries are equally refreshing. For something uniquely South African, try a granadilla (passion fruit) slushie. Its tangy, tropical flavour makes it a refreshing option for any occasion.

Local Ingredients: Take advantage of South Africa’s abundant fresh fruits and herbs to create unique flavours.

Batch Prep: Prepare large pitchers of drinks like iced tea, sangria, or punch for gatherings to save time. Experimentation: Don’t be afraid to mix and match flavours, from tropical fruits to herbal infusions, to find your favourite combinations. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, hosting a braai, or enjoying a sunset on the beach, South Africa’s summer drinks and cocktails bring the spirit of the season to life. From classic creations to innovative concoctions, these beverages will keep you refreshed and ready for the endless sunny days ahead.

9. HerbInfused Sparkling Waters

As healthconscious lifestyles grow in popularity, sparkling waters infused with herbs and fruits have become a trend. Lemon, mint, and basil are popular combinations that add subtle yet refreshing flavours to plain sparkling water. These drinks are not only hydrating but also a low-calorie option for those mindful of their sugar intake.

Cooking with the Wonderbag: A Game-Changer for Modern Kitchens

The Wonderbag is not just a cooking tool; it’s a paradigm shift in how we think about preparing meals. Developed in South Africa as an energy-saving solution, the Wonderbag is a portable, non-electric slow cooker that relies on insulation to retain heat and cook food over time. As someone who has spent years experimenting with various cooking methods, using the Wonderbag was a fascinating and enlightening experience.

First Impressions

At first glance, the Wonderbag is charmingly simple. It looks like a cushioned, fabric-filled bag, often adorned with vibrant patterns that reflect its South African origins. The design is intuitive: a pot of food is heated to a boil, placed inside the bag, and tightly sealed. From there, the Wonderbag’s insulation takes over, keeping the pot warm and continuing the cooking process without any additional heat source.

The simplicity of the design belies its versatility. It can accommodate soups, stews, rice, beans, and even baked goods. It’s lightweight, portable, and doesn’t take up much space in the kitchen—a definite plus for anyone juggling limited counter space.

Testing the Wonderbag

I decided to test the Wonderbag with a classic lentil stew, a dish that typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours of simmering on the stove. Following the instructions, I sautéed my onions, garlic, and spices, added the lentils, water, and vegetables, and brought everything to a boil. Once boiling, I placed the pot into

the Wonderbag, sealed it tightly, and set it aside.

The first thing I noticed was the silence. With no bubbling pots or stove burners to monitor, the kitchen felt oddly tranquil. I could leave the house, run errands, or simply relax without worrying about a pot boiling over or burning on the stove.

After four hours, I opened the bag. The stew was perfectly cooked—lentils tender, vegetables soft, and flavours melded beautifully. The Wonderbag had not only maintained the heat but also created a slow-cooked depth of flavour akin to dishes simmered for hours on low heat.

Strengths of the Wonderbag

Energy Savings

The most obvious benefit of the Wonderbag is its energy efficiency. By eliminating the need to keep a stove or oven on for hours, it saves electricity, gas, or wood fuel. This makes it an eco-friendly choice, especially for those trying to reduce their carbon footprint.

Convenience

Once the pot is in the Wonderbag, you can forget about it. There’s no need to stir, adjust the heat, or monitor the cooking process. It’s a stress-free way to prepare meals, particularly for busy households or those who work long hours.

Portability

The Wonderbag can be taken anywhere. Whether you’re heading to a picnic, camping, or simply need to transport a hot meal, it keeps food warm for hours. It’s also excellent for potlucks, as dishes can finish cooking en route to the event.

Flavour Enhancement

Slow cooking enhances the flavour of many dishes, allowing ingredients to meld and develop a richness that’s hard to achieve with faster cooking methods.

Safety and Health

Unlike traditional cooking methods that require constant supervision, the Wonderbag poses no risk of fire or burns once the pot is sealed inside. This makes it a safer option for households with children. Additionally, it reduces exposure to smoke from open fires, a significant health benefit in rural and underserved areas.

Limitations

of the Wonderbag

While the Wonderbag offers numerous advantages, it’s not without its limitations.

Initial Boiling Required

The Wonderbag doesn’t replace your stove; it complements it. You still need to bring the food to a boil before transferring it to the bag, which requires some energy upfront.

Longer Cooking Times

Cooking with the Wonderbag often takes longer than conventional methods. While this is a trade-off for energy savings, it requires some planning, especially if you’re used to faster cooking appliances like pressure cookers.

Not Ideal for All Recipes

Certain dishes, like stir-fries or foods requiring precise temperature control, aren’t suited for the Wonderbag. It’s best for slow-cooked meals like stews, soups, and grains.

Learning Curve

For those accustomed to traditional cooking methods, adapting to the Wonderbag requires a slight learning curve. Understanding how long to pre-boil and how much liquid to use can take some trial and error.

Real-Life Applications

The Wonderbag shines in specific scenarios. For families aiming to save on utility bills, it can significantly cut cooking costs. It’s also invaluable in areas with frequent power outages or limited access to fuel. Additionally, for meal preppers, it’s a game-changer. Imagine preparing a hearty soup in the morning, sealing it in the Wonderbag, and coming home to a perfectly cooked meal—no reheating required.

The Environmental Impact

One of the most compelling aspects of the Wonderbag is its environmental benefits. By reducing the need for firewood and fossil fuels, it helps combat deforestation and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. According to the company, each Wonderbag can save up to 1 ton of carbon dioxide per year, making it a small but meaningful step toward a greener planet.

Final Verdict

Cooking with the Wonderbag is a unique and rewarding experience. It challenges traditional notions of cooking, offering a low-energy, low-maintenance alternative that’s both practical and environmentally conscious. While it may not replace every appliance in your kitchen, it fills a niche that’s hard to match for slow cooking and energy conservation.

For anyone interested in sustainable living, simplifying meal prep, or exploring new cooking methods, the Wonderbag is well worth trying. Its ability to transform everyday cooking into an effortless, eco-friendly process is a testament to the power of simple innovations. Whether you’re a busy professional, a camping enthusiast, or an advocate for greener living, the Wonderbag is a delightful addition to your culinary toolkit. LV

For The Few A Car

Few experiences match the thrill of a naturally aspirated V12 Ferrari engine paired with open-top driving. The Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider offers this exclusive joy in a sleek two-seater design, powered by an 830 cv V12 that revs up to an astonishing 9500 rpm. This modern marvel channels the spirit of Ferrari’s iconic 1950s and ’60s open-top Gran Turismo models, blending performance with the sensory pleasure of open-air motoring.

The 12Cilindri Spider breaks away from traditional Ferrari spider aesthetics, embracing a futuristic design rooted in clean, pure lines. This car caters to both seasoned enthusiasts and new Ferraristi who seek a combination of Italian style, comfort, and exhilarating performance.

Powertrain

At the heart of the 12Cilindri Spider is the F140HD engine, a refined version of Ferrari’s legendary V12. Lighter, faster, and more responsive, it delivers seamless power with peak performance at high revs. Advanced materials like titanium rods and rebalanced components enhance efficiency while reducing weight. Innovations from Formula 1, such as a high-performance valvetrain, ensure top-tier mechanical precision.

Engine upgrades focus on maximizing torque and delivering smooth acceleration at any speed. The intake system features variable geometry to optimize power, while cutting-edge software adjusts torque based on the gear, creating a thrillingly progressive driving experience.

With its breath-taking sound, unmatched power, and elegant design, the Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider is truly a car for the few who demand the extraordinary.

Engineering Excellence

The Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider delivers extraordinary performance through meticulous engineering. With refined gear ratios and an optimised torque curve, the car offers exceptional acceleration while improving efficiency. A variable displacement oil pump minimizes energy loss by adjusting oil flow precisely to engine needs, enhancing both performance and sustainability.

The advanced fuel injection and ignition systems work seamlessly to boost power while reducing

emissions. A new exhaust system, featuring cutting-edge catalytic converters and particulate filters, meets the latest environmental standards while preserving Ferrari’s iconic V12 roar. The equal-length exhaust tracts and carefully designed silencer baffles ensure a pure, exhilarating sound at every rev.

Inside, the intake system has been fine-tuned to deliver a richer, more balanced engine note, offering an immersive sound experience, particularly in sporty driving modes.

The car’s 8-speed dual-clutch transmission improves acceleration, shortens gear ratios, and boosts torque, making shifts 30% faster than previous V12 models. The addition of an eighth gear enhances efficiency during highway cruising, balancing thrilling performance with everyday practicality.

The result is a masterpiece of engineering that combines Ferrari’s legendary power, sound, and refinement in one remarkable package.

Exterior Design

The Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider introduces a bold new design, moving away from traditional sculptural aesthetics to embrace sleek, futuristic lines. Flavio Manzoni and the Ferrari Styling Centre created a minimalist yet striking silhouette with clean, interconnected surfaces and geometric precision.

The car’s flanks sweep back in a dihedral design, highlighting its monolithic elegance. The sculpted bonnet flows seamlessly, featuring two subtle vents for engine cooling. The front redefines Ferrari’s design language, with

blade-like daytime running lights (DRLs) integrated into a single wraparound element, replacing traditional headlight and grille shapes. At the rear, dramatic buttresses frame a sleek black-screen element, echoing the car’s dynamic side profile. The taillights are set into a blade-like

strip across the concave rear, blending functionality with beauty. Active rear flaps replace a conventional spoiler, enhancing aerodynamics while contributing to the car’s high-tech look. The lower rear section, available in black or carbon fibre, features prominent diffuser keels and newly

designed compact twin tailpipes. This creates a “floating” effect, giving the car a lighter, more dynamic appearance.

Every detail of the 12Cilindri Spider harmonizes form and function, embodying Ferrari’s commitment to innovation and elegance.

Interior Design

The Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider’s interior is a harmonious blend of luxury, sportiness, and innovation. The cabin is divided into three distinct levels: the upper dash, the central area, and the footwells and seats, creating a dynamic dualcockpit design. This layout, inspired by models like the Ferrari Roma, ensures both driver and passenger enjoy a comfortable and immersive experience.

Sustainability takes centre stage with materials like Alcantara® made from 65% recycled polyester, highlighting Ferrari’s commitment to eco-conscious luxury. The dashboard stretches horizontally, enhancing the sense of space, while contrasting materials and floating elements add a feeling of lightness. The centre tunnel features a sleek Y-shaped design, housing Ferrari’s signature shift gate and wireless charging pad.

The retractable hardtop storage replaces the rear bench, yet the cabin remains spacious and ideal for long journeys.

Cutting-edge technology includes a new Human Machine Interface (HMI) with three displays: a 15.6” driver screen, a 10.25” central touchscreen, and an 8.8” passenger display, all ensuring intuitive control and shared driving excitement.

Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® come standard, and a wireless charging mat adds convenience. For audiophiles, an optional Burmester® audio system delivers 1600 watts

of crystal-clear sound for an unparalleled in-car experience, even at high speeds.

With its seamless integration of style, comfort, and technology, the Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider’s interior perfectly complements its breath-taking performance.

Aerodynamics

The Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider combines sleek elegance with advanced aerodynamic efficiency. Key features include a 25-mm nolder on the rear boot lid and active aero flaps, which adapt to driving conditions for optimal performance.

The flaps operate in two modes: Low Drag (LD) for minimal resistance at lower speeds or over 300 km/h, and High Downforce (HD) for added stability during dynamic driving. Internal air passages ahead of the rear buttresses direct airflow efficiently, reducing cockpit turbulence and enhancing rear aerodynamics.

The underbody design is meticulously engineered to generate vertical downforce and improve efficiency. Vortex generators and strategic louvers reduce drag, manage airflow from the engine and brakes, and channel air toward the rear diffuser. These features ensure balanced downforce and improved cooling.

Inspired by Ferrari’s racing innovations, the rear underbody includes vortex generators and air inlets for precise

airflow management and component cooling. This seamless integration of performance-focused aerodynamics ensures the Spider is as stable and efficient as it is stunning.

Cooling Layout

The Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider features a redesigned cooling system to ensure efficient heat management. Seven openings in the front bumper direct airflow to key areas: central openings cool the engine radiator and air conditioning condenser, while side intakes handle engine oil and brake cooling. Two vents on the bonnet release engine bay heat, improving cooling and aerodynamics. Cleverly positioned vents behind the front wheels and under the car optimize airflow for better performance and reduced drag.

Vehicle Dynamics

The Spider’s advanced systems ensure exceptional handling and performance.

Brake-by-wire technology integrates with Ferrari’s ABS Evo and Side Slip Control (SSC) 8.0, enhancing braking precision and grip, even on low-traction surfaces. The 4-wheel steering system independently manages all wheels for sharper cornering and stability. A shorter wheelbase and near-perfect weight distribution (47.8% front, 52.2% rear) further improve responsiveness and agility.

Tyres

Specially developed Michelin Pilot Sport S5 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport tyres ensure superior grip, stability, and comfort. Their innovative design reduces rolling resistance by 10%, improving efficiency and handling in both wet and dry conditions.

Chassis

The lightweight all-aluminium chassis offers 15% more torsional rigidity while reducing weight. Despite its retractable

hardtop and additional reinforcements, the Spider adds just 60 kg compared to its coupe counterpart. The hardtop opens or closes in 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h, combining convenience and elegance.

Sustainability

For the first time in a production Ferrari, recycled aluminium was used for specific components, reducing CO2 emissions by 146 kg per car while maintaining top mechanical performance.

7-Year Maintenance

Ferrari offers a 7-year maintenance programme, covering regular service, original parts, and expert care. With annual check-ups or every 20,000 km, owners enjoy peace of mind knowing their car will remain in peak condition for years. This programme is available globally and extends to pre-owned Ferraris. What Makes South African Homes Elegant and Inspiring

South African homes are renowned for their elegance and inspiring design, blending diverse cultural influences, natural materials, and innovative architectural techniques. Whether nestled in sprawling urban landscapes or set against the country’s breath-taking natural backdrops, South African homes exude a charm that celebrates the beauty of their surroundings while embracing modern and traditional elements.

From the understated sophistication of contemporary designs to the warm appeal of traditional African aesthetics, here’s a closer look at what makes South African homes truly extraordinary.

1. A Harmonious Connection with Nature

One of the most defining features of South African homes is their seamless integration with the natural environment. Architects and designers prioritize incorporating nature into the living space, resulting in homes that feel like extensions of their surroundings.

Open

Spaces and Panoramic Views

Many homes feature large windows, glass doors, and open-plan layouts that maximize natural light and offer panoramic views of South Africa’s landscapes. Whether overlooking the Table Mountain, the rolling vineyards of the Cape Winelands, or the vast savannahs, these design elements create a sense of harmony between the indoors and outdoors.

Natural Materials

The use of natural materials like stone, wood, and clay adds warmth and texture to South African homes. Locally sourced materials not only reduce environmental impact but also pay homage to the country’s rich natural resources.

Indoor-Outdoor Living

Patios, verandas, and outdoor entertainment areas are integral to South African homes. These spaces often include features like fire pits, swimming pools, or braai (barbecue) areas, reflecting the country’s love for alfresco living and social gatherings.

2. Architectural Diversity and Innovation

South African homes reflect the country’s cultural melting pot and architectural ingenuity. From sleek modern designs to traditional styles, the variety is endless.

Contemporary Elegance

Modern South African homes are characterized by clean lines, minimalist aesthetics, and cuttingedge technology. These homes often feature open-plan designs, high ceilings, and innovative use of materials like concrete, steel, and glass.

Traditional African Elements

Many homes incorporate traditional African design motifs, such as thatched roofs, earthtone color palettes, and handcrafted décor. These elements bring a sense of authenticity and cultural pride, connecting modern living spaces with Africa’s rich heritage.

Eco-Friendly Architecture

Sustainability is a growing trend in South African home design. Solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient appliances are becoming standard features. Green roofs and vertical gardens further highlight the commitment to eco-conscious living.

3. Cultural Influences in Interior Design

South Africa’s diverse cultural tapestry is a major influence on interior design. Homes often showcase a fusion of traditional African art, colonial influences, and contemporary aesthetics.

African-Inspired Décor

Vivid patterns, bold colours, and handcrafted items are hallmarks of African-inspired interiors. Items like woven baskets, beadwork, and carved wooden furniture add character and tell a story of the continent’s craftsmanship.

Colonial Elegance

Homes in areas like the Cape Winelands often feature Cape Dutch or Victorian influences, characterized by whitewashed walls, gabled roofs, and antique furniture. This style combines historical charm with modern functionality.

Global Influences

South African homes also draw inspiration from global design trends, blending Scandinavian minimalism, Mediterranean warmth, or Asian Zen with local elements to create eclectic and personalized spaces.

4. Focus on Functionality and Comfort

Elegance in South African homes isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s also about creating functional and comfortable living spaces.

Open-Plan Living

Open-plan layouts are common in South African homes, creating a sense of spaciousness and flow. Kitchens, dining areas, and living rooms often blend seamlessly, fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Multi-Purpose Spaces

With a growing emphasis on work-life balance, many homes include multipurpose spaces that can function as home offices, gyms, or hobby rooms. These adaptable spaces cater to the evolving needs of modern families.

Luxurious Touches

Luxury is often expressed through high-end finishes, bespoke furniture, and thoughtful details. Features like freestanding bathtubs, walk-in closets, and designer lighting add an extra layer of sophistication.

5. Celebrating Art and Craftsmanship

Art and craftsmanship play a pivotal

role in South African homes, turning living spaces into galleries of creativity.

Local Art

Walls adorned with paintings, sculptures, and photography by South African artists bring a unique and personal touch to homes. From abstract pieces to works inspired by the country’s history and landscapes, art becomes a centrepiece of interior design.

Handcrafted Furniture and Décor

Bespoke furniture and décor items, often crafted by local artisans, add authenticity and charm. Materials like reclaimed wood, leather, and metal are transformed into one-of-akind pieces that enhance the home’s character.

6. The Role of Colour and Texture

South African homes are known for their thoughtful use of colour and texture, creating spaces that are

vibrant yet cohesive. Earthy Tones and Neutral Palettes

Inspired by the natural landscape, many homes feature earthy tones like terracotta, ochre, and sand. These colours create a warm and grounded atmosphere. Neutral palettes, often accented with bold pops of colour, are also popular in contemporary designs.

Layered Textures

Layering textures—such as soft rugs, woven fabrics, and smooth ceramics— adds depth and interest to interiors. This tactile approach creates spaces that are both visually appealing and inviting to touch.

7. Outdoor Spaces as Extensions of the Home

In South Africa, outdoor spaces are as important as indoor ones. Gardens, courtyards, and terraces are thoughtfully designed to enhance relaxation and entertainment.

Landscaped Gardens

Many homes boast beautifully landscaped gardens that incorporate indigenous plants and water features. These spaces provide a serene retreat and reflect the homeowner’s connection to nature.

Outdoor Kitchens and Dining Areas

Outdoor kitchens and dining spaces equipped with braais, pizza ovens, or bar setups make entertaining guests a breeze. Comfortable seating and ambient lighting ensure these areas are used year-round.

Pools and Spas

In warmer regions, swimming pools are often the centrepiece of outdoor spaces, offering a refreshing escape from the heat. Some homes also feature spalike amenities, such as hot tubs or saunas, for ultimate relaxation.

8. Technology and Innovation

Modern South African homes embrace technology to enhance comfort, security, and efficiency.

Smart Home Systems

From automated lighting and climate control to security systems and entertainment setups, smart home technology is becoming a standard feature. These systems not only add convenience but also contribute to energy efficiency.

Energy Solutions

With South Africa’s abundant sunshine, many homes incorporate solar panels and battery systems to reduce reliance on traditional energy sources. These sustainable solutions align with the global push for greener living.

9. Creating a Personal Sanctuary

Ultimately, what makes South African homes elegant and inspiring is their ability to serve as personal sanctuaries. Whether it’s through the thoughtful selection of décor, the integration of nature, or the celebration of cultural heritage, these homes reflect the personalities and values of their inhabitants.

Conclusion

South African homes are a testament to the country’s unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and architectural innovation. Their elegance lies in their ability to balance form and function, tradition and modernity, and individuality and universal appeal.

From the open spaces that invite nature in to the artistic touches that celebrate local craftsmanship, South African homes are more than just living spaces— they are expressions of identity and creativity. These homes inspire not only because of their aesthetics but because of the stories they tell and the lives they enhance.

Whether you’re designing a home, redecorating, or simply seeking inspiration, South African homes offer endless ideas for creating a space that is elegant, functional, and truly your own. LV

From the Spotlight to Empowering Lives:

Lessons from a Life of Purpose

Now focused on giving back, she challenges stereotypes about aging, empowers the next generation through her GRAD initiative, and finds joy in meaningful connections. In this Q&A with Wanita Wallace, she shares lessons from her career, her reinvention, and her enduring commitment to purpose and resilience.

Early Career and Carte Blanche

Your career on Carte Blanche earned you a reputation as one of South Africa’s most trusted journalists. What would you say was the most important lesson you learned during that time?

“That things are not always what they seem. You can fall flat on your face if you follow your own convictions and views before you have done the work of really finding out everything you can.”

Throughout her time at Carte Blanche, this lesson became a guiding principle, shaping the way she approached

With a career defined by empathy, curiosity, and courage, Ruda Landman became one of South Africa’s most trusted journalists during her time on Carte Blanche. From highprofile interviews to impactful storytelling, her journey has inspired many.

Landman is also the second inspiring South African senior celebrity featured on the Rocktirement podcast by Circle Senior Living, creators of vibrant senior communities. Hosted by Gidon Novick—entrepreneur behind Kulula, LIFT Airline, and Home Suite Hotels—the series redefines retirement. “It’s been a privilege to explore the minds of these icons who’ve shaped South Africa,” says Novick. “They’ve left incredible legacies and continue to live purposefully, proving that life is meant to be fully enjoyed, no matter your age.”

complex stories with diligence, empathy, and curiosity.

You’ve mentioned your ability to “listen with your skin” as a key to your interviewing success. Can you explain what that means to you and how it shaped your career?

“It makes all the difference in an interview. It unlocks a door to another layer inside the person you’re interviewing and gives you much more texture and depth. This kind of interview is what I like, much more than investigative, adversarial interactions.”

Her ability to create safe, engaging spaces transformed the depth of her interviews, a skill that extended to projects like The Change Exchange and the publication of Tell Me Your Story in 2018.

What were some of the most memorable stories or interviews you conducted during your time at Carte Blanche, and how did they impact you

personally?

“How long do you have?! Bishop Tutu and Dirk Coetzee, within about a year of each other in 1991 and 1992, changed my whole concept of who I am.”

These moments, coupled with eyeopening encounters across South Africa and Uganda, highlighted the vast disparities in experiences and knowledge. They profoundly shaped her worldview and her understanding of humanity.

Transition from the Spotlight

Stepping away from a high-profile career is no small feat. What was the hardest part of that transition for you?

“All change involves loss. My career had defined me, as with so many people. I had to find a new way of being in the world.”

The transition brought challenges, but also opportunities for reinvention, leading to new creative pursuits and meaningful contributions.

You’ve openly reflected on the identity shift that comes with leaving a public role. How did you go about rediscovering yourself after Carte Blanche?

“I had to still earn money, so I had to find opportunities to do that with the skills that I had. That led to wonderful new experiences, like the series *’n Lewe met...* on kykNET, about living with mental disorders.”

Over time, stepping away from the public eye became liberating, allowing her to focus on family and community impact.

In what ways have you found peace and purpose in this new chapter of your life?

“I have time for my home and my family, which is a gift.”

Her work with students, such as creating life skills booklets, embodies this sense of purpose and continues to leave a lasting legacy.

Defying Aging Stereotypes

You’ve been an advocate for redefining what aging and retirement mean. What would you say to people who feel limited by age-related stereotypes?

“I believe very firmly that people are individuals first and foremost. Not all older people are the same.”

“I believe very firmly that people are individuals first and foremost. Not all older people are the same.”

By celebrating individuality and encouraging self-expression, she challenges societal norms and inspires others to embrace their uniqueness at any age.

In your view, what are some of the most damaging misconceptions society holds about aging, and how can we start to change them?

“Like all prejudice and stereotyping, it can hamper the ability of the very people involved to fully participate in the world, giving all they can.”

Recognising the value and potential of older generations is crucial to overcoming these misconceptions.

You’ve kept physically and mentally active, mentioning your love for walking with a TheraBand and maintaining strong “tummy muscles.” What motivates you to stay fit and how does it affect your outlook on life?

“As your body ages, the only way to retain mobility and ease of movement is to actually use it.”

This proactive approach to health ensures a foundation for a fulfilling and pain-free life.

GRAD Initiative and Giving Back

Your work with GRAD helps South Africa’s first-generation university students. What inspired you to get involved in this initiative, and how has it evolved since you started?

“Half of the 150,000 first-years at SA universities every year are first generation. They cannot phone home for practical advice.”

Her booklets, developed since 2016, have guided thousands of students, offering essential tools for both academic success and life beyond graduation.

How do you feel giving back to the younger generation has enriched your life, and what advice would you give to others looking to make a difference later in life?

“In building other people, we build the country and, as you say, enrich ourselves.”

Her work exemplifies the profound joy that comes from nurturing the potential of future generations.

Looking Forward

You’ve made it clear that you’re not winding down anytime soon. What excites you most about the future?

“I have never looked for excitement in life – that feels unsettling and uncomfortable. I want to be happy, be with people I love, do things I enjoy.”

This grounded approach ensures a future filled with contentment and meaningful relationships.

How do you continue to challenge yourself, both professionally and personally, in this phase of your life?

“Much of it comes down to staying engaged and interested in the world and in other people.”

By reflecting on the lessons of others, she continues to evolve with curiosity and purpose.

If you could send one message to younger generations about aging and retirement, what would it be?

“You are going to live many years beyond retirement... Keep your body healthy, start young, and build up enough savings to live comfortably.”

Her message is a rallying cry for intentional living, emphasizing health, relationships, and preparation for a rich, fulfilling life. LV

Trends

Current in South Africa

South Africa is a dynamic country where tradition meets innovation. In 2024, its social, cultural, and economic trends reflect the diversity and creativity of its people. From sustainability to health and digitalisation, these trends paint a picture of a nation navigating challenges while embracing opportunities.

1. Emphasis on Sustainability

Sustainability has become central to daily life in South Africa. With recurring environmental challenges like droughts and electricity shortages, many households and businesses are turning to green energy solutions such as solar panels and water-saving technologies. Eco-conscious behaviours like recycling, reducing plastic use, and supporting ethical, sustainable brands are becoming increasingly mainstream. This shift reflects a collective effort to protect resources for future generations.

2. Technological Integration

The digital transformation in South Africa is accelerating, with greater access to affordable smartphones and expanded internet connectivity. Mobile payments, e-commerce platforms, and blended “phygital” shopping experiences (combining online and physical retail) are reshaping consumer habits. As technology becomes more embedded in everyday life, sectors like education, healthcare, and finance are leveraging innovation to improve accessibility and efficiency.

3. Health and Wellness

A growing focus on holistic health is reshaping lifestyles. South Africans are engaging in fitness activities such as running, yoga, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT), alongside exploring mental well-being practices like mindfulness and therapy. Nutrition trends include adopting plantbased diets and embracing traditional, nutrient-rich foods. Wellness is no longer just about looking good; it’s about feeling better, living longer, and fostering mental resilience.

4. Cultural Revival

South Africa’s rich cultural heritage is taking centre stage in design, fashion, and entertainment. Designers are incorporating traditional patterns and indigenous techniques into contemporary styles, creating unique products with global appeal. In the arts, local music and film are reaching international audiences, showcasing authentic South African stories and talent. Cuisine, too, reflects this cultural pride, with chefs incorporating indigenous ingredients into modern culinary experiences.

5. Preference for Experiences

Materialism is giving way to the pursuit of meaningful experiences. South Africans are prioritizing activities that foster personal growth and create lasting memories, such as adventure travel, cultural festivals, and outdoor recreation. Domestic tourism is booming as people explore the country’s natural beauty, from its beaches and mountains to its game reserves. This trend underscores a collective desire for connection, discovery, and enrichment.

6. Financial Awareness

Economic challenges have made financial prudence a priority for many South Africans.
