Hi all, Activation’s Parks and Places has just about come to an end for summer 2014 (and so has the weather!). I would like to congratulate everybody who took part in this summer programme aimed at giving Upper Hutt residents a chance to try new activities and get active. A big thank you to all the sport clubs and active recreation providers who got on board – we couldn’t have done it without you. Activation estimates we had more than 5000 people involved with the programme, but as we are still gathering participant numbers from providers it could be much more than this. What a great community response to a fun and full-on programme! We will showcase some of the activities in the next Activation newsletter. Sadly, we are saying goodbye to the driving force behind Activation’s Parks and Places programme – AJ Picard. AJ is heading off to do what he loves most – working with young people in the community. I would like to acknowledge AJ’s work within the Activation team and thank him for the effort he put into supporting community groups with active programmes, co- facilitating Active Families with Sport Wellington, supporting

2

Council staff to get active through a number of initiatives, running the primary school and intermediate Unihoc competition, his involvement with the Bike Festival and so much more. We are really going to miss him and wish him all the very best. Brenda hosted a fantastic launch to the ALIVE project earlier this month and we are excited to announce the first community active 12 week programme starting Tuesday 8 April. A poster with more detail is included in this newsletter. As always, we are super keen to provide assistance, support, programmes, ideas and our time and energy to create a more active Upper Hutt! So if you have ideas, need help, want to promote something active then please feel free to contact us by emailing activation@uhcc.govt.nz or phoning me on 04 529 0091. Stay Active! Fran

Upper Hutt hive of Movin’March activity Upper Hutt school children and their families are putting their feet, cycles, scooters and skateboards into top gear for Movin’March – a regionwide celebration of active travel to and from school taking place from 24 March – 28 March, 2014. “From Wheels Days through to decorating the school gate and your shoes, it’s all happening at Upper Hutt schools,” says Sam Winslow, Movin’ March coordinator and Greater Wellington’s senior school travel plan coordinator. A special feature of Movin’March this year is celebrating the whole experience that active travel to school gives you – whether it’s sharing a joke with your friends, hearing the clicking of cicadas or giving a curious cat a pat. No trip to school is the same when you’re on your bike or scooter, walking or skating. All Upper Hutt schools are invited to take part in a range of Movin’March activities. They can hold a Fancy Feet day where kids can paint or add wild and whacky touches to their footwear. Or take part in the regional “All In” day on Wednesday 26 March when all students aim to travel all or part of the way to school actively. A lot of schools run a “Wheels Day” for as many kids as possible to cycle, scoot or skate to and from school. This year there’s also the opportunity for schools to create a mural which maps kids’ favourite things they saw, smelt or 6

experienced on their adventure to and from school. If they take a photo of the mural and send it to the Movin’March team, they’ll go into the draw to win three scooter racks for their schools. Five Upper Hutt schools have registered for Movin’March so far. We’d love every school to take part and share in the fun. More information and registration details are available at www.gw.govt.nz/movin-march. Schools can also contact Natalie Finnigan, Upper Hutt’s school travel plan coordinator, email: natalie.finnigan@uhcc.govt.nz.

Pinehaven School students and principal, Kayleen Macnee raring to go for Movin’March.
