Activation Newsletter - February 2014

1

Hi all, Nearly the end of February already?! How did that happen. I’ll try to keep it short and sweet this month (yeah right!) Firstly, I would like to welcome Ondine Brown back to the Activation team! Ondine is our Kiwisport Coordinator and will be continuing to facilitate a project that aims to encourage year 8 students to transition into college sport and school leavers to continue on their sport and active pathways after they leave secondary school. It’s fantastic to have Ondine back and we will keep you updated on the great outcomes from the project. I hope you have had a chance to participate in Activation’s Parks and Places programme over the last two weeks. If not, don’t worry there is still a month’s worth of opportunities and events to come! To find out more visit the website: www.parksandplaces.org.nz . In the first week of the programme we saw more than 500 people participate in activities advertised in Parks and Places and of those, 217 were new to the activities. We would like to thank everyone who has attended a session (or ten!) and supported us to get more Upper Hutt people more active. The summer Badminton league has also kicked off with a hiss and a roar. Who would have thought we had so many keen badminton players in Upper Hutt?! We saw over 60 people participate in the first week and because it’s a casual league

Please see the advert included in this newsletter and if you are interested or know anyone who might be – get in quick, applications close Wednesday 26th February. Finally, I would like to invite you to attend the launch of the three year ALIVE Project being run in partnership with Sport New Zealand. We would love to see members of our community at the launch. More details on the ALIVE project and an invitation are included in this newsletter. As always, we are super keen to provide assistance, support, programmes, ideas and our time and energy to create a more active Upper Hutt! So if you have ideas, need help, want to promote something active then please feel free to contact us by emailing activation@uhcc.govt.nz or phoning me on 04 529 0091. THE ALIVE PROJECT – Active Lifestyles: Informative, Vibrant, Engaging I would like to take this opportunity to announce an exciting new project aimed at enabling Upper Hutt residents to engage with sport and active recreation locally; while being supported and encouraged to lead active and healthier lives. I would also like to introduce myself; I am Brenda Collins, the ALIVE Project Coordinator with Activation at Upper Hutt City Council and it will be my role to deliver this project to the Upper Hutt community over the coming years.

4

ALIVE is a three year project, funded in partnership between Sport New Zealand and Upper Hutt City Council. Its aim is to target particular groups within the Upper Hutt community and provide them with free opportunities to experience a range of different sports and active recreation activities through twelve week programmes. These programmes have the opportunity to make significant differences in the lives of participants, their families/whanau and the wider community.

Six 12 week programmes will be available to residents each year, a total of eighteen programmes across three years. Each programme will aim to have a cohort of at least 20 participants, but no more than 35. Groups will be put together with different demographics, for example, young people, women, men, general community etc. The aim of the programmes are to provide residents who are currently not involved with sport or active recreation, on a regular basis, and give them opportunities to try a range of sports or active recreation pursuits, make connections with others, have fun and either

re-engage with an activity they use to do or take up a new one. There will also be targeted health and wellbeing education and information provided to participants. We would love to see you at the official ALIVE Launch on Thursday 6 March, 6 - 7pm at Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre, Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt. Additional information and RSVP details can be found on the invitation above. For more information or if you have any questions please contact Brenda Collins on (04) 529 0081, email brenda.collins@uhcc.govt.nz
