It is with great sadness, excitement and happiness that I am announcing my retirement and will be leaving in December. I am very proud of the accomplishments that we have made in the Parks & Recreation Department during the time that I have been Director. I was hired as the Deputy Director by Mayor Lyle C. Van Houten in 1988. At that time, I began my journey to mold and shape a new program era for Dearborn Heights. One of my legacies that I am leaving Dearborn Heights is my jewel, and now a staple in Dearborn Heights, is the Heights Traveler Program. A very large number of our senior residents have enjoyed many different venues throughout the years, since 1991. I am also especially proud of the parent-child dances, that have given so many residents, moms, dads, grandparents, brothers and sisters, wonderful memories throughout the years. Because of the length of my career here, the children that have attended our youth programs have wonderful families of their own now; and the seniors' adult children, now are seniors themselves and participate in our senior recreation centers. I have worked with 3-4 generations of families and have enjoyed every moment of it, except for the fact that it makes me aware that I too am aging! As the Director of the Department, we have done more in these 3 ½ years than has ever been done by any Parks & Recreation Director in the past. The building improvements at our Richard A. Young Recreation Center and the Senior Recreation Centers, have been substantial. The park improvements have also been abundant, including approximately a $2,000,000.00 park renovation at Van Houten Park. It seems surreal that I was hired by Lyle C. Van Houten and then I am ending my career bringing the Lyle C. Van Houten Park back to its glory days and then some. We have a new Fitness Court at Daly Park. There have been and will be more renovations at Weddel Park. The list goes on and on, too long to mention anymore. But I am proud of it all. I will never say goodbye.... but I will say.... see you later! Please know that I have loved getting to know all of you and making Dearborn Heights my home.
Sincerely,
Kimberly S. Sower, MSA, CPRP Director Parks & Recreation
