WHAT TO DO IF YOU ACQUIRE A DOMAIN WITH A BAD HISTORY? During a Google Webmaster Central hangout, one site owner had a concern about acquiring a domain with a bad history. It turns out that the URL used to operate for piracy content after checking the Google transparency report and they have no connection to the previous owner whatsoever, to which they asked if Google can do a reset over the domain because its lousy record doesn’t have anything to do with their brand.
Google’s John Mueller provided a good deal of guidance regarding this matter. According to him, this is a problem that should automatically resolve itself over time. It depends on how long the domain’s bad history has been going on for and the extent of its record. If there was just a brief period in the URLs lousy history, then it gets cleared off the record by itself. However, if the domain’s unreliability is up to the extent of ten years or even longer, then it may create a possible problem that can affect the history of its new owners and then the SEO ranking of that new site owner’s page.
ARCHIVE.ORG As suggested, using Archive.org to view a domain’s history to know how webmasters would be better off to start over with a new field to build things from scratch because there’s just no chance establishing anything better with a URL that has a significant harmful activity for an extended period. Unlike these domains with problematic histories, URLs that acquired a poor reputation for a brief period only can resume business as usual since their records can be cleared out in due time.
