I’m ready to push aside the long dark days of winter, rise with the sun, and fully embrace each day. Spring is my favorite season! Wether it is welcoming bright yellow daffodils in my flowerbeds, browsing at the farmers market, or watching baby lambs play at my brother and sister-in-law‘s Creswell farm, I love to slow down and enjoy the newness of spring. If I have a Saturday with no commitments I walk up to our local library and chat with the helpful staff and volunteers. The library is a place where I feel welcome and being there on a nice spring day makes me happy.

Boyst grew up in Lane County, graduated from Florence High School, and by the time she was 17 she was already living independently and working full time. Her husband Ken is the owner of Evergreen Land Title Company, one of only 2 locally owned and operated title insurance companies in Eugene. “My father-in-law, Mike Boyst, has worked in the real estate industry for over 30 years. He saw all the volunteer work I was doing and he said he just really thought [real estate] would be a good fit. He has managed a lot of companies here locally, and his knowledge is just so great that he has been a really good mentor for me.” In fact, Boyst still goes to her father-inlaw for advice and support.

As soon as Sandra Boyst, co-owner of ICON Real Estate Group, opens her eyes in the morning she checks her e-mail and text messages, and then she does a search on RMLS hot sheet for active, pendings, and solds to stay on top of the market. Next up is making sure her kids are ready for school.

Harrison is a senior and very involved in theater, and her daughter Victoria is a sophomore and has a passion for horses; she’s been taking riding lessons since second grade.

After the kids are off to school, Boyst spends some time with her two 60 pound, 8-month-old labradoodle puppies Layla and Sadie, letting them get out some energy, and wakes herself up with caffeine. Then she starts with the check in calls to clients.

“My business is a little bit different,” says Boyst. “Other agents may pick up leads from online sites, but my clients are mostly people I know.” She relies mostly on those face to face encounters, out meeting people in their field, or taking referrals from the clients she already has.

Even though Boyst and ICON co-owner Joe Williams are managing the brokerage, they are successful as individuals, representing sellers and buyers throughout the local market.

“When we set up ICON it was never just to make money off our agents.

That was hard for me when I worked for other brokers. You have to sell more to make the same amount of money, and lose that time with your family. We wanted agents to be able to keep their money that they worked hard for.”

Quality family time is important to Boyst, most days she goes to the high

school and picks up her daughter and friends and takes them out to lunch.

“Honestly, I’m still always available to my clients. That’s the nice thing about this industry. You can be flexible and spend time with family, but still have access to your clients, with technology.”

Boyst and Williams will celebrate 4 years in business come July, and have 34 agents working under them. They also have a retired agents program, and a number of principal brokers.

Everyone gets to go at their own pace and still feel supported.

Coming into this part of her career Boyst says has been natural. “I realized that it wasn’t about the company you’re with, but the relationships you

build. Being honest. And having integrity.” She places value on the kinds of people she works with both as clients, and in the office. “I want good, like-minded people who I enjoy being around, we can learn from each other, they have integrity, and advocate for our industry.” The vibe at ICON is non-competitive, every agent has different needs and goals, and everyone there is part of a knowledge base and support network. As opposed to the tradition corporate model, at ICON agents are encouraged to do marketing that resonates with them and invest in community projects that are important to them. ALL of ICON’s agents are experienced producers.

Boyst herself is in the top 30 agents in Lane County closing on average more than 1 transaction per week.

Throughout the day Boyst checks RMLS for just listed properties. It’s important to her to be first in writing an offer on hot properties. She explains, “I work with a lot of investors and it is important to send them listings as soon as they hit the market.

I am always out talking with people and have a real pulse on the market. I am a resource for connecting people. I have several clients which now I consider close friends that own companies that range from, land use planning, excavation companies, demolition companies, construction companies, property management companies just to name a few. They have all helped me grow my knowledge in the industry and have helped me succeed.”

With both her and Ken owning their own businesses, Boyst says that “It allows us to help in our community.

and I was the PTA president for 9 years.” Not just that, but Boyst cochaired bond measures, donated time and money to her kids’ schools, was an elected official on the Springfield School Board, and on the Springfield Education Foundation. She was involved with S.M.A.R.T. readers, and even helped underprivileged kids with their homework before school. All her hard work earned her the A Champion for Education ACE award and Lane County Volunteer of the Month recognition. When nominated for the volunteer of the year award she was logging 20+ hours a week volunteering for Centennial Elementary School and on the board of the Springfield Education Foundation. This is what Ronnell Curry Executive Director of the Springfield Education Foundation had to say when Boyst was nominated “Sandra has a sincere caring and likable personality that makes others around her feel good about helping.

She is dependable and hard-working.

She truly has made a lasting impact on hundreds of Springfield students.”

“Taking the time to show people that I care and that they are important is how I live my life.” When it comes to her own kids, Boyst wants them to have the opportunities to explore their own passions. She was the first person in her family to graduate from high school, and she wants her kids to really live lives that they are proud of.

With two parents in real estate, she says that she wouldn’t want her kids to be under the stress and pressure the industry can bring on. “It’s a great industry, but it’s also very emotional.

You put a lot of your clients’ stress on your own plate.”

At the end of her day, Boyst and her husband just enjoy spending time together. “We like that Lane County is so central to everything.” She says, “We are really social people. We love to spend time with friends. We used to go camping a lot. We love going up to Portland and going shopping or out to dinner just to get away. We love going over to Eastern Oregon, or even to the coast.” A day in the life of this Top Producer is full of rewarding and exhilarating interactions with family, clients, co-workers, and community.

How did you come up with the name American Dream Real Estate?

My Husband and Son started their own Landscape Construction & Design business a year prior called All-American Landscape Construction. My son came up with American Dream Real Estate saying it is the American Dream. Being in the Business, I wondered how I didn’t come up with it myself! In April it will be 4 years since I opened my business.

My slogan is “Help me, Ronda” I’ve always liked helping people. Owning my own company gives me the option of doing things the way I would want it done, the way I would want to be represented. Customer service is #1.

What sort of agents do you like to work with?

At American Dream we all work the same way, we have the same ethics, and we all treat customers like they are the number one priority. I’ve always said (and I have many testimonials on my website Ronda.REALTOR that confirm this) whether its selling just a small piece of property or a large property -whatever the price may be- you treat everybody the same. You work just as hard for one as the other.

What does your life outside American Dream look like?

One thing I like about real estate is setting my own hours. Most people work 8-5 and so I can be available after 5 or on weekends. Having my husband, our son, daughter-in-law and the best 2 grandkids in the world to go camping, to the Zoo, the coast and spending time throughout the year with birthdays, holidays and just time together. They mean everything to me and spending time with them makes the world go round. I am pretty protective of my family, and my clients as well. Plus I have a spoiled 3 year old german shepherd who is my baby. My family just means everything to me.

What was your life like growing up?

I grew up on a small farm in Pleasant Hill. I came from an old fashioned family, and worked picking beans,

I worked for a large franchise for about 9 years and there were a lot of great people there. We all pretty much helped each other. Marlo Dixon and I covered for each other. And I worked at a local brokerage for about 4 years.

I also have the Graduate Real Estate Institute, and a business administration certificate from Lane County Community College. I do extra education all the time. I always have way more hours than I need when I renew. I want the education so I have the knowledge to properly represent each client. On March 13, 2020, Kendall Toyota will clear their showroom and transform into a stunning catwalk competition. Twenty local men and women will hit the runway with a goal to raise more than $125,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Emerald Valley.

Each model has pledged to raise a minimum of $2,500, and the model that raises the most money will win the coveted TOP ROLE MODEL AWARD. At Kendall doing the right thing means more than selling and servicing vehicles. Their progressive attitude means being exceptional stewards of the communities they operate in, as well as the environment. It means going above and beyond every day for the people who mean so much to them – customers.

I was a contractor in Seattle during the 90s, right after President Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. I remember there was a lot of grousing about it from contractors, complaining about government over-reach, rising costs, the kinds of things you’d expect. Now, all these years later, cut curbs, ramps, talking crossing signals, wider doors, grab bars, etc., are commonplace and used by almost everyone, disabled or not.

In 1990 the internet was still in its infancy. I don’t need to tell you how essential it’s become since then. People shop for groceries, houses, cars, dentists, you name it. And now that that’s happened, the ADA is being applied to websites, just like it continues to be with buildings.

Imagine you’re legally blind and want to buy a house. If you go to a local

Real Estate company’s website, are you going to be able to “see” what’s for sale? You wouldn’t be able to scan for pictures, but could you glean other information from the site, such as locations, specs and prices?

Unless your website is ADA compliant, the answer is...no.

This scenario happens every day in our country, whether it’s the website of a Real Estate company, a mortgage broker, a gym, a restaurant, a movie theater, school, etc.

And it’s illegal.

People with disabilities feel left out.

If you or a loved one felt left out of online experiences, how would that make you feel? Certainly frustrated, maybe even angry. Maybe angry enough to sue.

Lawsuits against non-compliant businesses are on the rise. The DOJ is projecting thousands more in 2020.

So there it is. Under Title III of the ADA act, all websites, with very few exceptions, must be equally accessible to everyone.
