Mardalup Building
Often seen but not heard. Not a name heard much outside New Zealand, the Māniatoto is more likely seen because artists, photographers and filmmakers are frequently inspired by the sensual open spaces and glorious, golden hues of this special part of southern New Zealand.
The wider Central Otago region is best known for its famed vineyards – the home of awardwinning New Zealand Pinot Noir – and the multitude of outdoor adventures and snow sports resorts around Queenstown and Wanaka. But, if you prefer to travel off-piste, that’s just the start of the riches to be found in this picture-perfect landscape.
Iconic landscapes
The vast plains of the Māniatoto stretch across the north-eastern corner of Central Otago, a wide-open space where snow-capped mountain ranges meet golden tussock-covered hill country and undulating farmlands. It’s an iconic landscape, quite different from any other part of New Zealand.
The Māniatoto was named by Māori explorers making their way inland from eastern coastal settlements across to the West Coast in search of prized pounamu – New Zealand jade or greenstone which they traded as weapons, tools and adornments. The name Māniatoto or “Plains
of Blood” references the flowing red tussocks that covered the valleys and hillsides.
The first European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. They were gold miners and pastoral farmers, and many descendants are still farming the land today. Every road leads to a heritage hotel or an historic site where early settlers plied their trades, made their fortunes or eked out a living in the newly claimed wilderness.
Central Otago Touring Route
Today it’s easy to travel through the heart of this region on the official Central Otago Touring Route which begins and ends with Queenstown and Dunedin. Both towns are just a couple of hours by road from the Māniatoto district.
For those looking for a two-wheel adventure, there’s the popular Otago Central Rail Trail – a multiday 150 km cycling adventure that travels between the smaller towns of Middlemarch and Clyde. The cycle trail, which follows a former rail track, crosses the Māniatoto Plain and is one of several off-road cycling experiences in the region.
Eating and drinking is exceptionally good here, whether it’s delectable summer stonefruit and artisan produce, craft brews or fruit of the vine in the world’s most southern wine-growing terroir. The vineyards and wineries around Bannockburn, Bendigo and Cromwell are synonymous with New Zealand’s best winemakers, world-renowned pinot noirs and other varieties.
Self-drive, walk or cycle the vineyards or take a guided tour from Cromwell. However you travel, make sure you stop off at a local eatery or pub to experience some authentic southern hospitality. Built in 1862, Danseys Pass Hotel, near Naseby, is a local icon worth the stop for hearty pub meals and charming hotel accommodation in the original building. Check out www.danseyspass.co.nz
To the west, lie the sophisticated year-round alpine resorts of Wanaka and Queenstown. Summer and winter, these internationally popular lakeside
towns are centres of outdoor adventures on the water and in the mountains. Luxury golf courses and local golf clubs abound and, in winter, visitors flock to the region to ski and snowboard the southern hemisphere’s best slopes.
Ranfurly & Naseby
Whilst the Māniatoto is only a couple of hours drive from those larger settlements, there is a sense of peace and remoteness which has bound together a strong community of people. This community spirit has been a key factor in keeping the towns and settlements alive, providing a wonderful place to live in or visit.
Ranfurly and Naseby are the two largest towns in the Māniatoto. Ranfurly is often celebrated for its exotic 1920s art deco architecture. The Otago Central Rail Trail passes through the town, and the historic railway station serves as a visitor information centre and a key stopping off point for cyclists and walkers exploring the town and surroundings.
Nearby Naseby – often referred to as being “2,000 feet above worry level” – nestles beneath the Hawkdun range of hills and is surrounded by a working forest known as the Black Forest. This small town has protected and retained the heritage architecture, with its buildings reminiscent of a Victorian era movie set.
Naseby is a great place to be based to enjoy a network of walking and cycling tracks, picnic areas, historic gold mining sites and two dams for swimming and fishing. It is also the traditional home to the ancient ice-sport of curling, with the year-round opportunity to learn and play the game on the international standard indoor rink at Māniatoto Adventure Park. There’s also a summer and winter luge, plus an outdoor wintertime ice-rink. For more on Central Otago Tourism, visit centralotagonz.com . Find out more at https://youtu.be/iNKBYhyCG1Y

NEW
15,000 acres Price: NZD$15.8 Million
A treasured landscape. Central Otago is admired for its dramatic landscapes dominated by snow-covered peaks and big skies.
Gold mining, extensive livestock farming and latterly vineyards fuel this region’s fascinating heritage. The future New Gold is surely Tourism and Environmental Sustainability.
Located between the historic settlements of Naseby and Dansey’s Pass, Shortlands Station comprises of 6,121-plus hectares /15,000 acres, more or less, is a large-scale sheep/beef and grazing farming operation that’s been in the same family for almost 80 years. Offering extensive flat alluvial plains and easy undulating foothills, yet coupled with large tracts of golden tussock covered Central Otago high country, this Station is part freehold, part Crown Pastoral lease with rights in perpetuity.
Management is focused on regenerative biological farming successfully delivering improved soil ecology and pasture growth, and production gains over the past decade.
Included in the sale are the main farm homestead, two staff houses and a lodge. Farm improvements comprise of a modern five-stand woolshed with covered yards, large concrete workshop, three implement sheds, two hay barns and four grain silos.
The Station also has two glamping sites/cabins set in remote private locations within the property, each offering delightful accommodation for two guests. This separate thriving business, sold in conjunction with the Station is presently managed by the current owners.
Shortlands is presently running an estimated 14,000 stock units.
Under current farming economics, Shortlands’ management keeps stock numbers flexible, maintaining less capital stock allowing surplus feed for trading stock and contract grazing. Consisting of capital stock, trading stock and flexible contract grazing.
Shortlands also has the added benefit of having significant approved areas, up to 600ha, for the lucrative intensive winter grazing of dairy cows giving farm management flexibility throughout the season, maintaining a high degree of profitability and sustainability.
The Station holds significant private water rights/consents for large scale water access.
The consented potential irrigation development is designed on a low-cost gravity feed, overhead spray system, complete with variable rate application enhancing economic viability and environmental sustainability.
When completed, the irrigation development has the ability to increase Shortlands stock capacity by more than forty percent helping to secure this iconic property for the generations to come.
Furthermore; the current owners have steered the farm towards establishing direct to market access for the farm produce www. provenancemeat.co.nz along with processing the properties wool directly

into clothing. Concentrating on Protecting Reputation and the traceability of product to market protocols used on the property noting the world-class quality of meat & wool products as produced by this Station.
Any new Owner will almost certainly build on this potential and take this opportunity to the greater world, perhaps utilizing (your own) existing business interests.
For the absentee owner, existing Managers are receptive to remaining engaged should this be so desired. Beyond nearby Naseby (famous for its indoor year-round curling rink) lie award-winning vineyards, golf courses, and New Zealand’s top leisure and adventure tourism centre; Queenstown, or Dunedin all within a 2½ hour radius.
