Named #1 Asia Pacific destination by Lonely Planet in 2019, the spectacular Margaret River region welcomes travellers like no other in Australia.
Apleasant three-hour drive south of Perth, the Margaret River region is Western Australia’s premier holiday destination with offerings like pristine natural attractions, premium wineries and craft breweries, fine restaurants, handmade arts and crafts, unspoiled beaches, towering karri forests and friendly locals. Blessed with a mild Mediterranean maritime climate, the four seasons are gently defined in this relaxed and soulful corner of the country.
The Margaret River region offers many unique experiences, the most special being whale-watching. Tours bring you out to the waters of the Southern Ocean to spot majestic Killer Whales (Jan to Apr); graceful Southern Right whales and their new-born calves (Jul and Aug); the planet’s largest animals, Blue Whales (Oct to Nov), and magnificent Humpback Whales (May to Dec). You might along the way even catch sea eagles, osprey, seals, and pods of playful dolphins in action.
Naturaliste Charters offers whalewatching tours, each led by a qualified Marine Biologist with extensive knowledge about the local marine ecology and wildlife for an informative, educational and enjoyable experience.
Majestically nestled on a ridge and framed by the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Yallingup is a seaside town that’s bred the world’s most avid surfers. You can watch them challenge the swells and barrels of the Indian Ocean from the gorgeous shores of Smiths Beach, Three Bears, Rabbits and Injidup. The tranquil crystalclear lagoon at Yallingup Beach is also a favourite spot for snorkelling and swimming — perfect activities for cooling down after a trek along the rugged cliffs that look out to the nearby Cape to Cape Track.
More of nature’s charms lie in store at Ngilgi Cave, where a stroll along extensive boardwalks comes with stunning views of stalactites, stalagmites and helictites. Yallingup is also where myriad artisans — inspired by lovely landscapes in its surrounds — set up galleries, studios and craft workshops. Combined with the spectacular food, wine, and craft beer, it’s no wonder Yallingup topped Australian Traveller magazine’s 100 Best Towns in Australia issue in 2019.
Coming Soon… The Ngilgi Cave visitor precinct has been earmarked for a $3.5-million revitalisation to turn it into a world-class, iconic, innovative and culturally sensitive above-ground visitor facility. It will include a contemporary experience centre with a cafe and cultural meeting spaces.
The tranquil resort town of Dunsborough is sited between the stunning turquoise banks of Geographe Bay and Ngari Marine Park, making it a picturesque spot. Plonk yourself on the white sandy Dunsborough beaches that stretch out to the calm, clear blue where you can indulge in diving, snorkelling, kayaking and other water sports, or hit the beachfront cycling ways and walking paths along the bay. Dunsborough also boasts two golf courses, one of which is home to its own mob of kangaroos, the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, and the iconic 135km Cape to Cape Track walking trail. Town, meanwhile, throws up a bustling mix of boutiques and cafes, along with restaurants, brew houses, wine bars and pubs with live music.
Coming Soon… When the Dunsborough Foreshore Cafe is completed, visitors can look forward to new beach ablutions and showers, a bike station, improved pathways, and large picnic and deck areas.
Busselton is hailed the “events capital of Western Australia”, and at its heart is the 1.8km Busselton Jetty and waterfront precinct. From seaside cafes, kiosks, bars and restaurants, to adventure play spaces, bike paths and white sandy beaches, the waterfront is ideal for a day out with the family. That’s not all; Busselton’s main street beckons with alfresco restaurants, cafes, pubs and boutiques galore. History and culture buffs will dig attractions like Busselton Museum, Old Courthouse Art Complex, and St Mary’s Anglican Church, along with stops at caves, lighthouses, wineries, craft breweries and art galleries.
Coming Soon… The family-owned Shelter Brewing Co is slated to become the latest must-go by the beachfront. Nearby is another new landmark — a 4.5-star, 120-room hotel by the Hilton Group at a Busselton foreshore location. These will be complemented by Busselton Entertainment, Arts and Cultural Hub (BEACH), a convention, entertainment and performing arts centre poised to turn Busselton into a hub for the region’s growing creative industry.
Located south of Perth, the Margaret River region welcomes over 1.5 million visitors annually. Along with recent runway and terminal upgrades to the Busselton Margaret River Airport, travellers can also expect a new domestic service route from Melbourne direct to the region with Jetstar. The airport has also been recognised as an alternate airport to Perth, with the potential to support flights from international gateways such as Singapore.

BUSSELTON PHOTOGRAPHY, GETTY IMAGES PHOTO:Right in the heart of Perth is Kings Park and Botanic Garden. One of the largest inner-city parks in the world, it is a short walk or bus ride from the CBD and offers panoramic views of the city skyline and Swan River. Stroll through its 400-hectare grounds and admire more than 3,000 species of native Western Australian flora or learn more about the aboriginal culture from local tour guides. With playgrounds and wide grassy lawns, this is perfect for picnics.
One of Perth’s hippest spots is Elizabeth Quay, a waterfront precinct that’s home to a host of restaurants, fun attractions and gorgeous artwork. Yagan Square celebrates aboriginal heritage with a wildflower garden and traditional design elements. Explore the city’s best sights on the free CAT bus, which offers four routes. Start with a visit to Perth Mint and ogle at the world’s largest collection of gold bars. Then, pop in at Bell Tower to ring the Swan Bells, one of the world’s largest musical instruments. A ferry ride across the Swan River, meanwhile, brings you to Perth Zoo. Curious about other wildlife residents? Get up-close and personal with koalas, wombats, kangaroos and more at Caversham Wildlife Park.
Break away from the bustle of the CBD at urban hubs like Beaufort Street in Mount Lawley, and spend the day exploring its array of boutiques and browsing through the smorgasbord of unique finds. Leederville is where to recharge with a flat white and afternoon snack at one of
its many cafes. Arts enthusiasts will be pleased with the galore of programmes at museums and performance venues at Subiaco and Northbridge. Nights are best spent in one or a few heritage-style pubs in Victoria Park or at the world-famous Crown Perth.
You don’t have to leave the country just to get away from everything. Just an hour’s drive from Perth’s CBD or a short ride by boat from the coast, Rottnest Island is the best place to stalk a quokka for that selfie, while Swan Valley and Perth Hills offer winery tours. Past meets present in Fremantle; don’t leave without visiting World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison and the lively Fremantle Market. At Mandurah, one of Australia’s oldest fishing towns, hop on for a cruise along the canals to meet more than 120 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins.
That’s not all; with 19 metropolitan beaches along its coast, such as City Beach, Scarborough Beach, Brighton Beach and Cottesloe Beach, Perth offers plentiful options for swimming, surfing, peoplewatching and sunset-viewing.
