PROGRAMS

New Mexico ranks 50th in literacy. Our low literacy rate affects everything: the economy, health, family stability, children’s educational success. We tackle the problem one reader, one worker, one parent, one grandparent at a time.
Ethos Literacy has provided free tutoring to adults since 2009. The Library of Congress named us a Best Practices in Literacy Honoree. We received an Innovation Prize from the National Literacy Directory for our New Words Writing and Newspaper Project.

The foundation of our curriculum is an evidence-based Structured Literacy approach. It is grounded in 50 years of research about how people learn to read and write. Students work at their individual pace, addressing specific topics like sounds of letters, fluency and comprehension.
Beginning, Conversational and Survival English helps immigrants and refugees achieve fluency and learn necessary safety English for emergencies. Students may have an individual tutor or work in a small group.
Creative Writing is small group instruction that focuses on the joy of poetry and storytelling.
"New Words - New Voices" is an award-winning project involving writing, a newspaper publication and a public reading. "New Words - New Voices" is a powerful program that not only gives students the skills and opportunity to communicate their thoughts and experiences, but also validates their humanity by acknowledging the value of their stories.

Pre-GED is a collaboration with the local community college. The community college does not accept students into their GED program if they read below the 5th grade level. The Community College refers these students to us. We work with them to increase their reading levels so they can enroll in GED classes at the community college.
Basic Math covers place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and percentages.
Introduction to Digital Literacy covers everything our students need to know to navigate the digital world including using a smartphone, texting, sending emails, using Word, creating and using spreadsheets.
Workforce Development. Our capacity to tailor instruction to meet students' educational and work goals distinguishes us in the field of adult education. When a student comes to us and says she has a specific need, we will work on that need. We have helped students prepare to take the Accuplacer Test, the community college entrance exam. We have also helped students earn various work-related certifications, including the commercial driver’s license, EMT certification, Nurse’s Aide, and the WorkKeys assessment for workplace skills.
