WELCOME

Welcome to the Reaching Wider summer school for adult learners 2024 Our team are providing a variety of free taster courses at the University of South Wales Treforest campus running on the 2nd, 4th and 9th of July 2024.

WHO ARE WE?

The Reaching Wider Programme, established in 2002, is a Wales-wide, regionally focused, collaborative, long-term initiative. Its primary goal is to widen access to higher education and higher-level skills. Funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), this national program aims to increase higher education participation among under-represented groups It achieves this by raising educational aspirations and skills, as well as creating innovative study opportunities and learning pathways leading to higher education

The South East Wales Reaching Wider Partnership aims to increase participation in higher education by people from underrepresented groups and communities in South East Wales with a specific focus on people who live within the bottom 40% of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation, care experienced young people, and carers

The West Delivery Team based at University of South Wales serves Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

Our summer school is open to all adults over 18 years old. However, priority is given to learners who:

live in areas of multiple deprivation have not previously accessed Higher Education opportunities are a full-time unpaid carer or a care leaver

If you’re approaching the University south-bound from the A470, follow the A470 to Pontypridd and take the A4223 exit toward Pontypridd.

At the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A470/A4058 ramp and stay in the righthand lane taking the 3rd exit (A4058) at the next roundabout before turning left onto the Broadway/A473 Stay on the A473 following signs up to the University

The visitors car park is located opposite the main campus If you are approaching the University from the A470 turn left at the mini roundabout at the main campus The postcode is CF37 1DL

Art and Design

TUESDAY 2ND JULY 10:00 - 15:00

Morning workshop 10-12 introduction to drawing

This morning workshop explores the formal elements and conventions of drawing We will look at composition of image in design There will be a series of guided activities using pencils to sketch a combination of landscapes, human forms, animals and botanical images

Afternoon workshop 1-3 introduction to painting

This afternoon workshop explores colour mixing techniques, hints, tints, shades and tones. We will look at composition of image and colour conventions when using colour to convey narrative or feeling in an artwork. There will be guided activities to explore painting with a limited palette.

Welsh History and Culture

TUESDAY 2ND JULY 10:00 - 15:00

This course delves into the very rich heritage sites of Wales exploring interpretations given them through signage, guidebooks, guided tours, websites and social media platforms and how this compares with up to date historian knowledge.

If you want to discover what life was like inside hillforts, Roman towns, medieval churches and castles together with how Welsh industrial sites influenced and shaped the wider world this course is for you At this interactive study day you will learn about the ongoing debate between historians and the heritage sector and find out where you can find the most up to date historical research sources

Social Pedagogy

TUESDAY 2ND JULY 10:00 - 15:00

Introduction to Mobile Photography

TUESDAY 2ND JULY 10:00 - 15:00

This one day taster session offers an inspiring and practical introduction to taking better photographs using your mobile handset. The day will be a very practical and interactive where participants will discover the principles of composition, lighting, and framing that underpin compelling imagery

We will discuss rules of thirds, depth of field and the key elements to consider in a various aspects of photography such as landscape and portraiture By the end of the day you will have greater knowledge and a range of practical techniques to take more creative, impactful photographs using your phone

Psychological Therapies 10:00 -

TUESDAY 2ND JULY 10:00 - 15:00

Play, stories and psychological therapies.

Emma Wheeler will deliver a taster day relating to psychological therapies and working with children, young people and families. During the day you will learn about the importance of play and story making for therapeutics and well-being. The psychological theories related to the therapies will be discussed and engaging creative activities explored

This taster day will give you an insight into this fascinating subject and the range of study pathways available Emma is the Course Leader of the Integrated Foundation Year programme at USW and she teaches the Childhood and Youth Studies and Psychology modules Emma began her career as a primary school teacher specialising in Creative Arts and is a HCPC registered Art Psychotherapist.

Training to be a Teaching Assistant

THURSDAY 4TH JULY 10:00 - 15:00

Morning workshop 10-12 Learning through play.

This morning workshop will introduce the cross-cutting themes embedded throughout the new Welsh curriculum. We will look at how we can incorporate and include literacy and digital literacy in play and the second part of the workshop will focus on implementing theory in a practical ʻlearning through play’ session focussing on literacy and digital literacy

Afternoon workshop 1-3 - Learning through play.

This afternoon workshop will explore the cross-cutting themes embedded throughout the new Welsh curriculum We will look at how we can incorporate and include numeracy, Welsh language and culture and ESDGC (education for sustainable development and global citizenship) in play. The second part of the workshop will focus on implementing theory in a practical ʻlearning through play’ session focussing on numeracy, Welsh language and culture and ESDGC.

Youth and Community Work

THURSDAY 4TH JULY 10:00 - 15:00

Who is this course for?

The introduction to Youth Work course if for anyone who is interested in, or passionate about working within their local community

The introduction to youth work will offer you an insight into the principles and purposes of working with young people, and help you understand the value of non-formal and informal learning. You will acquire knowledge and understanding of some of the skills and values required by anyone working with young people in a community setting

What does the course cover?

The course has been created by identifying a range of essential topics to be covered during the day:

THURSDAY 4TH JULY 10:00 - 15:00

Insight into Aviation

Come along to our aviation career taster day at the University of South Wales Aircraft Engineering department

You will have the opportunity to speak to an Aircraft Engineer about career opportunities in the Welsh aviation sector; entry points to qualifications and certification as well as a tour of our world class aviation facilities.

During the day you will learn how an aircraft generates lift and is controlled by the pilot, how a gas turbine engine works and you can ask any questions you want about aviation in general.

You will also have the opportunity to take part in group exercises to get an insight into the skills needed to become a successful aircraft engineer

Local History Engineering

THURSDAY 4TH JULY 10:00 - 15:00

This study-day looks at how Welsh society emerged; people's names, customs, stories, literacy and even the language developing from it’s beginnings as part of the late Roman province of Britannia Prima.

We will look at the people who built a number of small kingdoms in the fifth and sixth centuries and those who followed including the arrival of Irish people, Byzantines and Gauls, with their wine, olives, pistacchio nuts, ceramics and jewellery from as far away as North Africa The people and culture rooted in these centuries will be brought to life and we will see how the influences perpetuate in the Glamorgan we know today

TUESDAY 9TH JULY 10:00 - 15:00

Ever wondered what happens from crime scene to court?

If your answer was a yes, then this event is for you.

You will be investigating a murder case. You will start in the crime scene, analyse some key evidence in the lab and determine the guilty party

Additional Learning needs in education

TUESDAY 9TH JULY 09:30 - 12:30

This morning workshop will explore additional learning needs in education We will start the morning by considering what additional needs might be, both physically and psychologically, and what inclusivity means and looks like.

We will discuss the social model of disability and how this puts the onus upon all of society to be fairer and more inclusive. There will be some practical tasks and activities around understanding additional needs and how to make reasonable adjustments, find solutions and adaptations when planning activities in an educational setting

Introduction to social care

TUESDAY 9TH JULY 13:00 - 16:00

This afternoon workshop will consider what a person’s care and support needs might be either physically or psychologically We will touch upon who might need support, different client groups and conditions and what care and support might be needed There will be some practical tasks around understanding disability, age and other care and support needs and an activity around understanding what a person-centred approach means.

We will discuss how we might implement care and support needs when planning activities in a care setting.

Introduction to animation

TUESDAY 9TH JULY 10:00 - 15:00

An exciting one day workshop exploring different methods of animation.

We will introduce you to traditional drawn animation, stop motion and Claymation animation.

This will be a hands on, fun packed and fascinating day exploring the styles and techniques of animation led by talented industry practitioners with a wealth of experience in both teaching and producing animation for the production sector

Creative Writing

TUESDAY 9TH JULY 10:00 - 15:00

This is a one day taster course in how to set about starting your creative writing masterpiece Whether it's a short story, screenplay, poem or epic novel, this one day course will help you to understand the literary form you have chosen

It will discuss your relationship with your readers, help you develop your thinking about what you want to say and provide you with a critique of your own work in a positive way.

Dr Peter Morgan Barnes is a published author, a theatre and opera director, and is leading this workshop having taught at USW in the past Please bring an example of your work, drafts or notes, together with a notebook

Half a day of ‘Life as an adult Learner’

Come and join us for a tour of the campus to explore the facilities, meet staff and find out more about what your journey would look like as an adult learner.

You will be led on a campus tour by current mature students, who will show you the highlights of the campus, including library facilities, lecture theatres, sports and social opportunities and study spaces. They will be able to answer any of your questions first hand and dispel any myths.

You will have the opportunity to listen to an applications and finance talk which will be mature and part time/distance learner specific, again giving you the opportunity to ask any questions specific to your own needs.

Finally we will take part in a study skills session run by our own Student Services team. This will give an overview of what studying will really look like, what we will expect from you and what you should expect from us. It’s a fun and interactive session which will be sure to put your mind at ease and support and areas of concern or worry.

We will finish off the event with coffee and cake in one of our food outlets which are open to students all year round and will become a real community hub for you in the future, no doubt.
