Rotary’s general secretary and the executive team oversee a staff of more than 800, who serve Rotary members from our world headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA, and seven international offices. The General Secretary is a member of the Rotary International Board of Directors and The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees. The day to day operations of RI’s Secretariat are under the supervision of the general secretary, the top professional officer of Rotary. He is the secretary of all Rotary committees as well as the Council on Legislation, regional conferences, and the annual Rotary convention. The general secretary is appointed by the RI board for a term of not more than five years and is usually re elected.
Since 1910, nine men have served in that position. Chesley Perry, the original general secretary, served from 1910 to 1942. Others who followed were Phil Lovejoy (1942 52), George Means (1953 72), Harry Stewart (1972 78), Herb Pigman (1979 86), Philip Lindsey (1986 90), Spencer Robinson, Jr. (1990 93) and Geoffrey Large (1995 97). Herb Pigman was re elected in 1993. S. Aaron Hyatt was appointed in 1997 and today’s RI General Secretary is John Hewko from the Rotary Club of Kyiv, Ukraine. Throughout the history of Rotary, the personal influence and administrative skills of our general secretaries have significantly shaped the course of Rotary programs and activities.

Well not really, every month is membership month! We need to have a conversation about membership! Members of Rotary are the most important asset we have. A diverse range of members allows us to do a diverse range of activities, transfers a diverse range of skills and gives the opportunity for a diverse range of experiences. Members should not be just bums on seats. We need to have an active meaningful involvement within the club, a purpose to fulfill and an expectation of satisfaction that what we are doing has meaning.
We should be actively seeking people who can help us achieve projects that our current skillset cannot. People who have projects or ideas that they cannot achieve alone. People who can contribute to our own well-being by their very positive approach and sense of community. Rotary should be challenging, fun, and have the purpose, significance, fulfillment, and satisfaction. Find the right people and who knows what we can achieve! Every month is Membership Month. Right now, while we are on Zoom it is a perfect time to invite a friend or colleague to a meeting, show them our website, look us up on Facebook and show what we do.
Membership in a Rotary club makes one a better community citizen. The average Rotary club consists of the mostactivecitizensofanycommunity. The “opportunity to serve” one of the reasons for Rotary membership. Rotaryisaserviceclubanditsproduct is serving people. Rotarians provide community service to both local and international communities. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian; the chance to do something for somebody else and to sensetheself fulfillmentthatcomesin the process and return of that satisfaction to one's own life. Becoming a Rotarian is richly a very rewardingexperience.

For most Rotary clubs, the orientation of new members is a pre requisite to become a full pledged Rotarian and it plays a vital role in helping these members internalize what it means to be a Rotarian. The club membership offers to meet with the new members for a one on one meet and greet or just an evening event to orient new members for the basics of Rotary and other related Rotary information.
The Rotary Club of Batangas, thru the imaginative leadership of Genuine Service President Arnel Pulla for RY 2022-2023, conducted orientation of new members during the 5th regular club meeting held “virtually” last August 16, 2022. Some of the important topics that were discussed during the evening event include the 3 T’s of Rotary, the Obligations of Rotarians, brief history of the club, and personal testimony of senior and neophyte members.
