RC BATS ATTENDS INTERCITY MEETING

Early in Rotary’s history, the “Intercity meeting” became popular as an effective way to extend opportunities for fellowships and acquaintances beyond the boundaries of a Rotarian’s own community. The Intercity meeting for the specific area is an opportunity for Rotarians to learn about leadership opportunities in Rotary; aside for being the opportunity for each club to showcase their almost oneyear accomplishments.

This one-day traditional event, held in conjunction with the Midyear Report, is convened by the district governor. Another purpose of this event is to have fellowships for Rotarians, renew acquaintances, and help motivate them to serve in Rotary leadership positions at district levels.

Rotarian’s Words of Wisdom

The Rotary Club of Batangas, under the imaginative leadership of GSP Arnel Pulla for Rotary Year 2022-2023, attended and participated in the Intercity Reports and Workshop for Area 2 held last February 26, 2023 at Jet Hotel in Lipa City. GSP Arnel was accompanied by GSS Pheng De Chavez in the annual event hosted by RC Malvar. Each club in Area 2 was given with a 3-minute video presentation showcasing their three (3) biggest projects for the year.

ABC’s of Rotary

Tolerance of Differences

The statement, adopted in 1933, says that because it is recognized that some activities and local customs may be legal and customary in some countries and not in others, Rotarians should be guided by this admonition of tolerance: "Rotarians in all countries should recognize these facts and there should be a thoughtful avoidance of criticism of the laws and customs of one country by the Rotarians of another country." The policy also cautions against "any effort on the part of Rotarians of one country to interfere with the laws or customs of another country." As we strive to strengthen the bonds of understanding, goodwill and friendship, these policies still provide good advice and guidance.

RCB Joins Rotary’s 118th Anniv

The world's first service club was founded on 23 February 1905 when lawyer Paul Harris and three friends met in a small office in downtown Chicago. They named their new club "Rotary" to describe the practice of meeting in rotation at the members' various places of business. During the 1911-1912 Rotary year, the association became international. The National Association of Rotary Clubs, which became the International Association of Rotary Clubs in 1912 adopted the name Rotary International (RI) in 1922. A lot has changed in Rotary since 1922 as it has continued to change and grow with this time to be the thoroughly modern organization as it is today.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENTIAL MONTHLY MESSAGE February 2023

Recently, I spent time in the Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda. As the "settlement" in its name suggests, the people living there are free to move around and integrate as best they can — one thing that makes the place unique.

I had a chance to play soccer with boys and girls from about a dozen nations and talk with women who had fled areas of conflict. It was a tapestry of human experience shared through both laughter and tears.

As I walked across a school campus at the settlement with a teacher, she shared with me the dire statistics on girls' education. Most don't get through grade school. Many are sold into child marriage to pay for food for their families. As I looked around at these young girls, I was gutted. Our work with empowering girls and women is much more than creating equity — sometimes, it's about health or education. Other times it's about providing safety. Regardless of the path, it's always about basic human rights.

We can do more to empower girls and women, and we can expand how we share the progress Rotary members and our partners have made toward this goal.

There is no shortage of inspiring examples of our work, from interest-free microcredit loans for women in Nigeria, to projects in India that provide girls menstrual hygiene products. Hundreds of projects are taking place across all Rotary areas of focus and are making a meaningful and often lifesaving difference.

Together, we can address the needs and inequities that girls throughout the world face daily. But we must also monitor the impact of these projects and create awareness of Rotary resources and subject matter experts, including Rotary Action Groups, The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Advisers, Rotary Peace Fellows, and others.

It is especially important that we tell the stories of our initiatives that have a positive impact on the lives of women and girls. This last point is near and dear to my heart. This means sharing our stories on social media, through local news outlets, in this magazine, and wherever we can inspire others.

As you do so, it's important to provide information that helps our Rotary family connect with others who are implementing activities in their regions, as well as across the world. Let's share our successes and learn from one another then proudly tell our stories to a larger audience.

These are exciting times in Rotary, and the world is taking notice. As we work to empower women and girls to step into their full potential, we create new pathways for membership growth and greater collaboration with partners to create positive, lasting change. Thank you for your continued action in this vital effort.

Rotary is Service Above Self

118 Years of Rotary Service

Rotary startedwiththevision of one man Paul Harris.

The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelongfriendships.

Over time, Rotary’s reachand vision gradually extended to humanitarian service Our 1.4 million members havea longtrackrecordofaddressing challenges in their communities and around the world. That commitment endures today through an organization that remains truly international. Still making history in every project, we are changing the “world for the better.”

Rotary’s World Peace & Understanding

The “World Peace and Understanding Day” in 2022 commemorates the 117 years existence of Rotary International. On February 23, 1905, four men met in a downtown office building in Chicago, Illinois. The meeting was organized because Attorney Paul P. Harris wanted to create a professional group representing the friendly smiles and small-town values he had known in his youth. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey decided to call their club “Rotary” because their meeting locations would “rotate.” The name “Rotary International” was officially adopted in 1922, as they encountered fellow professionals around the world who also craved friendly smiles and humanitarian values. Over a century later, the “World Peace and Understanding Day” marks the founding of one of the largest philanthropic service organizations in the world.
