Presidents Elect Secretaries Elect Club Trainors Seminar

The Bylaws of Rotary International require that the governor-elect of each district, in cooperation with the current governor, schedule and conduct a training seminar for the incoming club presidents of the district, preferably in March. This two- or three-day Presidents-elect Training Seminar, that now includes the Secretaries-elect and the incoming Club Trainors, commonly referred now by its acronym, PESECTS, is a motivational and leadership training session designed to prepare these future club officers for the position they will assume on 1 July. Among the subjects covered are the presentation of the RI theme for the coming year as well as information about effective service projects and The Rotary Foundation. Time is also devoted to reviewing the role and responsibilities of these positions Thy also learn about goal-setting, selection and preparation of club officers, club administration, membership recruitment and orientation, and RI and district resources.

In some areas of the world, two or more neighboring districts conduct Multi-district PESECTS. Multi-district PESECTS groups have found that their larger numbers help them attract popular Rotary speakers, provide incoming presidents with a perspective beyond the district, and generate more diverse strategies for effective club leadership.

PP Do’s Nomination to 1st MC Rotary Star of ExcellenceAwards

MC Rotary Star of Excellence Awards is “RI District 3820’s highest honor” that recognizes Rotarians and Non-Rotarians who demonstrate Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, by volunteering their time and talents to help others and does works related to Rotary’s 7 Areas of Focus. This award was conceptualized to honor a Big Man, no other than PDG Ramon“Mon” P. Cumagun, in the history of RI District 3820, who devoted much of his time in Rotary service. The award, in consonance to Vocational Service, was hosted by the Rotary Club of Lipa South.

When the 1st MC Rotary Star of Excellence Awards was launched last year, the club already knew that we have a most qualified member Rotarian to nominate for the said award. As GSP Arnel nominated PP Bernardo “Do” C. Hornilla for the Rotarian category, PP Ross Evangelio instantly wrote the most detailed biography out of PP Do’ personal resume. After the biography was finished, GSS Pheng De Chavez singlehandedly did the manual work of printing the seven (7) folders for submission to the seven panel of judges. And the rest is history for the club and PP Do.

FEBRUARY is PEACE & CONFLICT PREVENTION Month

One of the Seven Areas of Focus of Rotary we don’t seem to talk about as much is Peace and Conflict Resolution and Prevention, which happens to be the theme for the month of February. It is often, however, the conflicts that occur throughout the world that are the root causes of poverty, despair, economic hardship, and poor health.

Take for instance the major deterrent to polio eradication: the difficulty in vaccinating children in war torn countries. We see these conflicts as well occurring in some form within our own communities with the same results. Rotary International as an organization understands this relationship and therefore is deeply invested in supporting individuals and programs that will develop leaders who are committed to seeking ways toward peace. The path toward peace begins with understanding and respect for the differences that make us unique.

These are the same types of values that are studied in the peace centers supported by Rotary International in association with several major universities across the globe. The mission of these centers is to “empowers, educates, and increases the capacity of peace builders through rigorous academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities.

These Fellows develop the skills needed to act as “leaders and catalysts for peace and conflict resolution both in their communities and around the globe.” As Rotarians we should all be similarly committed to understanding the conflicts that exist in our own society, to speak out when necessary, and to seek solutions that reflect the values of Rotary. Of the 60 million people displaced by armed conflict or persecution, 90% are civilians. Half of those civilians are children. That’s millions of reasons why Rotary is so engaged in service projects, fellowships, and other Rotary-sponsored campaigns in pursuit of peace in our world.

How Rotary makes help happen?

Rotary train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict. We aid refugees who have fled dangerous areas. Rotarians also address the underlying structural causes of conflict by relieving millions of people suffering from poverty, inequality, ethnic tensions, lack of access to education and unequal distribution of resources.

In yet another program to achieve worldwide peace, up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellows are selected to attend Rotary Peace Centers to participate in master's degree programs at one of the partner universities. Rotary Peace Fellows study subjects related to the root causes of conflict and explore innovative solutions that address real-world needs. There are more than 1,000 peace fellowship alumni are working in over 100 countries.

Unity Streamer Ads

The Rotary Club of Batangas collaborated with other socio-civic organizations in Batangas City to come up with a “Welcome Streamer Billboard” along Star Tollway in the area of Barangay Tingga Itaas, Batangas City. The club, along with the Batangas City Eagles Club, and the two (2) Lions clubs in the city; the Batangas Lions Club and the Batangas City 103 Lions Club; sponsored and installed a streamer ads billboard, measuring about 5x8” and with adequate lightings, at the southernmost part of Sabang Bridge showing the welcome signage and the four (4) club logos. This concerted effort shows the unity and cooperation of these civic orgs with a common cause for community outreach service to Batangueños.

The month of February became a busy weekday for Filipino Rotarians. The Rotacon 2023 and PolioPlus Recognition Night were held recently in different date and venue with PRIP John Germ and former 1st Lady Judy in attendance. The Rotacon, the multi-district event for discussion of current local Rotary issues, was held at Acacia Hotel in Davao City while the PolioPlus Recognition Dinner was held at BGC in Taguig City. PRID Raffy Garcia and a number of PDGs were responsible for the successful visit of the TRF Trustee Chair, PRIP John Germ.

The Philippine Dental Association (PDA) is a non-stock, non-profit association founded in 1908. The PDA has its own Constitution & By-Laws and is duly registered with the Securities & Exchange Commission. Its operation is guided by Republic Act 9484 and the Regulatory Code of Dental Practice. When the Americans occupied the Philippine Islands, the Military Governor of the Philippines at the time, Major General Elwell Otis, authorized the then Provost Marshall General to determine the fitness of those who were already practicing dentistry. Accordingly, examinations were given and licenses subsequently issued. The requirement marked the beginning of the trend toward state supervision of the dental practice of the country. Three years after, with the change from a military to a civil government, the Islands were placed under a governing body known as the Phil. Commission. It was this body, which passed the famous Act No. 593, considered to be the second step towards the maturation of dentistry in the Philippines into a profession and provided for the organization of the Board of Dental Examiners.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRANTS for FEBRUARY 2023

Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14. It originated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and, through later folk traditions, has become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.

February is the month of love, a time to share joy and appreciation with important people in our lives. There are countless reasons I love being a Rotarian, but here are the ones which immediately spring to mind; Rotary is a place where I can “belong” once a week. Our weekly meetings are opportunities for fellowship. Some of my dearest friends belong to Rotary and I always look forward to catching up with them.

May we continue to spread love to the people of Batangas City and the world around us…!
