Exchange of Club Bannerette

One of the colorful traditions of many Rotary clubs is the exchange of small banners, flags, or pennants. Rotarians traveling to distant locations often take banners to exchange at make-up meetings as a token of friendship. Many clubs use the decorative banners they have received for attractive displays at club meetings and district events. The Rotary International Board recognized the growing popularity of the banner exchange back in 1959 and encouraged participating clubs to ensure that the design of their banners is distinctive and expressive of the club’s community and country. It is recommended that banners include pictures, slogans, or designs portraying the territorial area of the club. The Board was also mindful of the financial burden such exchanges may impose upon some clubs, especially in popular areas where many visitors make up and request to exchange banners. In all instances, clubs are cautioned to exercise discretion and moderation in the exchange of banner so that financial obligations do not interfere with the basic service activity of the club.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENTIAL MONTHLY

MESSAGE

While sitting with a group of Rotary leaders outside of Lusaka, Zambia, I ask a question: “How many of you have ever had malaria?” Every hand in the room goes up. They even begin to tell me about the first, second, or third time they experienced the disease, one of the main causes of death and sickness in many developing countries.

They are fortunate. They have access to medical treatment and lifesaving medicines. For the people of rural Zambia, their story is very different.

On a wooden bench in a small village, I sit with Timothy and his young son Nathan. With a camera crew capturing our conversation, he tells me of the time Nathan showed signs of malaria. He brought the boy to the nearby home of a community health worker, where Nathan quickly received medicines that in all likelihood saved his life.

Calmly, Timothy tells me about his other son’s bout with the disease a few years earlier. He had to race that son to a medical clinic more than 5 miles away. Riding a bike and carrying his child on his back, he tells me, he could feel his son’s legs turn cold and then his little body go limp. As he finally entered the clinic, he screamed for help, but it was too late. The camera stops rolling, and we sit in silence. He begins to weep, and I hold him tightly. “I lost my son, I lost my son,” he says.

This story is all too familiar for the families we meet over the next few days. And yet there is hope. Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia is Rotary’s first Programs of Scale grant recipient, and it is saving lives. Across two provinces of Zambia, 2,500 volunteer health workers have been selected by their communities. They are trained to bring medical care closer to those who need it, and they are able to diagnose and treat malaria and other ailments. Rotary partnerships create lasting change.

1st MC Cumagun Rotary Star of Excellence Awards

THE ESSENCE OF GIVING

“Every good gift and every perfect gift are from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither a shadow of turning.” – James 1:17

Life is a gift and it gives us the opportunity to give something back. One of the main reasons we have the custom of giving and receiving presents at Christmas is to remind us of the presents given to Jesus by the 3 Wise Men: Frankincense, Gold, and Myrrh. To give without expecting anything in return; to receive without hesitation; and to enjoy goodness without guilt… that’s the very essence of giving and the reason why we do it. Every money we donate, every hour we volunteer, every instance of goodwill; small or big… is an expression of hope that restores our faith in humanity.

The MC Cumagun Star of Excellence Awards is Rotary’s highest honor of RI District 3820 thatrecognizes Rotarians and Non-Rotarians who demonstrate Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, by volunteering their time and talents to help others and does works related to the Seven (7) Areas of Focus. This award was conceptualized to honor a Big Man in the history of District 3820, who devoted much of his time in the service of Rotary, and he’s no other than PDG Ramon “Mon” C. Cumagun fromthe Rotary Club of Lipa South. PND Ruskie & Rotakid Geli

RC Batangas Nominates PP Do Hornilla for the 1st MC Cumagun Star of Excellence Awards

The Rotary Club of Batangas has nominated and submitted last November 15, 2022 the nomination requirements of Past President Bernardo “Do” C. Hornilla for the “Rotarian Category” of the 1st MC Cumagun Star of Excellence Awards, hosted by RC Lipa South. Here’s the biography of PP Do Hornilla embodying his persona and distinctive character of being “Service Above Self”, entitled “Beyond Charitable History of PP Do”.

Beyond Charitable History of PP Do”

“Service Above Self,” the principal motto of Rotary, is for sure taken to heart by all Rotarians around the world but just like in the Rotary Club of Batangas, you will find someone who is an “overachiever.” One member that truly stands out in this category is our beloved and truly dedicated Rotarian, Past President Bernardo “Do” C. Hornilla, one of the few that best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.

PP Do has been a Rotarian way back in 1993 when he joined the Rotary Club of Batangas, the mother club in the province of Batangas. The club, hence, scored a major achievement in terms of quality membership; especially when PP Do, sponsored by the late PP Nilo Maranan, join the revered service org in Batangas City back then. When PP Do became a member Rotarian, he has been a whirlwind of active participation to projects and activities since no task has been too small or too big for him to take on. He has worked so tirelessly on behalf of the club that he has a long list of ways he exemplified to being tagged as “Service Above Self.” PP Do has also been a hub of inspirations for keeping the club’s fellowships strong and intact. Always present with humorous jokes and can-do attitude, he has made the club meetings and activities so lively and full of energy.

Before PP Do became a Rotarian, he was successfully chosen as one of the Team Members for the 1993 Group Study Exchange (GSE) team that was sent to RI District 5490 in Arizona, USA by The Rotary Foundation (TRF) with the category of “Waterworks.” Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Batangas, immersing and observing his professional field in the United States from 23rd May to 20th June 1993 was his first trip abroad and very first involvement with Rotary.

After the notable educational tour to the United States, coupled with awesome and memorable experience as GSE Team Member, led him to accept the invitation for membership to Rotary Club of Batangas with his Rotary Classification of “Sanitary Engineering.” His neophyte year with the service org saw him to become the new Club Bulletin Chair and Editorial Chief of “Ang Kumintang,” as well as the club’s Community Service Director. Almost ten (10) years after becoming a Rotarian, he served as Club President in Rotary Year 2002-2003 during the term of PRIP Bhichai Rattakul and PDG Mariquit “Kit” Reventar with the RI Theme, “Sow the Seeds of Love.” PP Do also became the club secretary seven times starting in RY 1997-1998, RY 2000-2001, RY 2001-2002, RY 2004-2005, RY 20062007, RY 2010-2011, and RY 2013-2014. His devotion to his role as Club Secretary ensured that minutes were done and accurate, records were kept up-to-date and meticulous, and that there was always a watchful eye over the meeting room making sure no important detail was missed. In this consummated role, PP Do has worked assiduously with challenging tasks for over the years to ensure that the club runs like an “invincible naval ship,” so to speak, working to “shore up practices” towards efficiency and stability. He is one of those members who find a way to solve any problem, no matter how daunting it may seem; “We can do this,” is his most used quote. PP Do has served reliably as Service Director in Rotary’s Four (4) Avenues of Service such as Community, Vocational, International and Youth. Then in 1998, he received the RI Citation Award for the 4 Avenues of Service from PRIP Glen Kinross. Thru the years, PP Do was a consistent awardee for the Club Service Recognition Award given annually by the org when he serves as Club Chairman to countless projects/programs that connotes to the Rotary’s Seven (7) Areas of Focus, such as “Patak Polio”, Club Sisterhood Pact, Career Guidance Seminar, Operation “Tuli”, Tree Planting Projects, Hand Water Pump

He, along with PP Vic Castillo, PP Denis Macatangay, and ex-City Mayor Dondon Dimacuha, formed a singing Rotarian quartet called “D’ DVD” almost two decades ago that entertained both the club and district events for some time. In the District level as well, PP Do was also consistent on serving the district in various roles.
