The word KUMINTANG is an old name of Batangas Province during the Spanish era and denotes several distinct styles, techniques and forms in music and dance originating in the large areas used by early Spanish chronicles centering around what is known as Batangas.

PP Mario Vittorio “Marvey” A. Mariño is a past president of the Rotary Club of Batangas having served during Rotary Year 2015-2016.

PP Marvey is currently serving in the lone congressional seat in the House of Representatives for District 5 of Batangas and seeking a re-election “unopposed” this year. He’s been a club member for 12 years and a perennial TRF contributor.

ABC’s of Rotary RI Official Website Since the late 1990s, Rotary International has been using the Internet to communicate with its members and to showcase Rotary’s many programs and activities. The official RI Web site at www.rotary.org also allows members to conduct Rotary business online — from ordering publications to making contributions to The Rotary Foundation to registering for the RI Convention and other meetings. Club officers can enter the site’s Business Portal and make changes to their club’s membership information. Using the Where Clubs Meet function, members can easily identify places to do make ups. The site’s Download Center offers an array of publications and forms, making it more convenient and less expensive for Rotarians to access Rotary materials. Language communities provide essential Rotary information in eight languages and link to official language sites maintained by Rotarians around the world. The RI Web site offers a vast amount of information — including the latest Rotary news. A visit to www.rotary.org will be enlightening to all Rotarians.

NONOY Bicol EBORA Accounting – Rotary Classification “New Member” Rotarian Rtn Nhoy was recently inducted into Rotary

last October 2021 with a Rotary Classification of Accounting and sponsored by PS Pheng De Chavez. He finished Bachelor of Science in Accountancy at the University of Batangas (UB). Married and residing in Casa Del Bambino Compound in Barangay Alangilan, Bats City; he is currently employed with HINO & Honda Cars Batangas as Sales Manager. Rtn Nhoy acts as Managing Partner with RCPEA & Co. and he sidelined as an Associate Agency Manager with Sunlife Grepa Financial Inc.

“Celebrate Rotary to Change Lives”

Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta urged members to become more involved in service projects, saying that caring for and serving others is the best way to live because it changes not only other people’s lives, but also our own. Mehta spoke about how participating in service projects through Rotary changed him as a person and made him empathize more with the needs of others. “Rotary kindled the spark within me to look beyond myself and embrace humanity,” he said. “Service became a way of life for me and I, like many others, adopted the guiding philosophy that ‘Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on this earth, and I want to be a good tenant of this earth.’”

Rotary’s Statement on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion At its June meeting, the RI Board of Directors, with guidance from the DEI Taskforce, took additional steps to ensure our organization values and lives the principals of diversity, equity and inclusion by revisiting and strengthening Rotary's 2019 DEI statement. The result is a new Commitment to Diversity Equity and Inclusion adopted in June 2021: At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.

We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of people of all backgrounds, across age, ethnicity, race, color, disability, learning style, religion, faith, socioeconomic status, culture, marital status, languages spoken, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs.

Recognizing that individuals from certain groups have historically experienced barriers to membership, participation, and leadership, we commit to advancing equity in all aspects of Rotary, including in our community partnerships, so that each person has the necessary access to resources, opportunities, networks, and support to thrive.

We believe that all people hold visible and invisible qualities that inherently make them unique, and we strive to create an inclusive culture where each person knows they are valued and belong.

In line with our value of integrity, we are committed to being honest and transparent about where we are in our DEI journey as an organization, and to continuing to learn and do better.

The Board of Directors convened the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Taskforce in 2020 and tasked it with assessing the current state of DEI within Rotary and developing a comprehensive plan of action with achievable, measurable, and meaningful outcomes for Rotary. This plan is currently in development and will be presented to the Board of Directors in October 2021.

Additionally, the Board agreed to: Provide DEI training for incoming, current, and past RI officers Promote the Rotary Code of Conduct Establish protocols to report Code of Conduct violations The Board thanks the taskforce for its ongoing commitment to creating a more just, open, and welcoming Rotary experience during this past year. The taskforce's work is critical to the organization's long-term success. The Board also extended the work of the DEI Taskforce through June 2023.

“Ongoing Chartering” of RC Batangas Malarayat The Rotary Club of Batangas, under the amazing leadership of ALC President Weng Gonzales, is now on the process of chartering the ROTARY CLUB OF BATANGAS MALARAYAT. To be led by Charter President JI KATIGBAK and Charter Secretary ZEUS DIMACULANGAN, the future club has prospective charter members of at least 25. The core group has already undergone “Meet & Greet Virtual Session” with members of RC Batangas and the “Basic Orientation” from the District Membership & Extension Team last December of year 2021. The club chartering was a pet project of President Weng and PP Boyet Gonzales.

January is VOCATIONAL SERVICE Month VOCATIONAL SERVICE is the essence of Rotary and serves as the foundation from which we serve our communities around the world. Vocational Service calls on us to empower others by using our unique skills and expertise to address community needs and help others acquire or refine skills and advance their professional opportunities.

Originally only one representative from each business or profession (vocation) was invited to join a club. Paul Harris felt that if several members of the same profession were to join, they would either sit together and “talk shop” or compete against each other for other members’ business. The idea of “trade-boosting” was gradually eliminated and by 1912, Rotarians were no longer required to exchange business with one another.

Of Rotary’s five Avenues of Service* – Club, Vocational, Community, New Generations and International – Vocational is difficult to define, so it is sometimes called the “Forgotten Avenue of Service”. One reason is Club, Community, International and Youth Service activities usually involve groups of Rotarians. They enjoy the fellowship of Club Service, the satisfaction of serving the needs of their communities, and the hope that their International Service promotes world peace and understanding. But Vocational Service – the second Avenue of Service -- is generally conducted by individual members.

Vocational Service focuses on: Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public.

The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians.

The contribution of your vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of the community.

Rotary’s “Vocational Service Month” is a great time to start leveraging vocational service in club projects and activities. The Vocational Service in Action handbook can help you gain a better understanding of vocational service and provide you with ideas to practice it through your service activities, in your personal life, and in your career. PRESIDENT’S QUARTERLY REPORT

… it’s been almost six (6) months or the 1st semester have passed since I assumed the club presidency last June 21st and still enjoying this inspiring commitment of amazing leadership during this challenging time of pandemic and the amazing life changing role in continuing to accomplish projects and activities for the seven (7) Areas of Focus and five (5) Avenues of Service of Rotary…

ALCP WENG GONZALES … finally, we THANK the Divine Providence that even its pandemic due to Covid-19 virus and Omicron-variant and still we hurdled it safely with flying colors… let me borrow JFK’s quote that “as we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them” …

… starting with our successful 72nd Induction & Handover Ceremonies held last October 5th at the newly constructed “Friendship Hall” in Gonzales Road, Poblacion San Pascual, San Pascual, Batangas… four (4) new individuals were inducted into Rotary; they were (1) Reina Abu – General Medicine (2) Emma Carandang – Real Estate (3) Nonoy Ebora – General Accountancy & (4) Jayson Delgado – Platform Project Services… prior to the evening event, the traditional Governor’s Visit was conducted with the “in-person” attendance of District Governor Angie Sunio & husband, PDG Dennis… … last October 9th-13th, the S.M.I.L.E. for Life - Year 12 was conducted at PBM in Diliman, Quezon City… 24 young patients as project recipients were given with another hope and fresh smile… … last October 24th, the club participated in the annual observance of World Polio Day by taking part in the morning motorcade for “polio awareness campaign”… … last October 28th, the “Park ‘n Treat” Season 2 was conducted again for the Rotakids… … last November 24th, the club conducted an outreach project, “A Day with Cancer Warriors”, for a giftgiving and feeding program… … last December 15th, the club conducted a livelihood project called “Padyak Pangkabuhayan” by donating an “all-purpose trike” to a destitute family for their new income generation… … last December 15th, the club conducted a Christmas Gift Giving called “Maagang Paskuhan sa Barangay San Jose-Sico” for the 200 individuals… … last December 29th, the club conducted a “PostChristmas Gift-Giving” to 26 dialysis patients in NCBC in Barangay Alangilan, Batangas City…

again, greatly appreciated all your time and effort given to all the club activities and we’re on the right track of success…

-------------------------------------------------------------… last November 2nd, we paid another “courtesy visit” to the Batangas City Mayor, Honorable Beverley Rose Dimacuha-Mariño and to her husband, Congressman Marvey Mariño… … fifteen (15) club members joined in the District PolioPlus Society as “charter members”… … last November 21st, our club signed the MOU for the “sisterhood agreement” with RC Cubao Business Center held in Okada Manila… … last November 27th-29th, the club participated in the “virtual” Rotary’s Presidential Conference (PRC) 2021 held here in Manila… … last December 2nd, the club conducted the “Orientation Night” for the future “charter members” of the Rotary Club of Batangas Malarayat”, both face-to-face and virtually… … last December 12th, we attended a traditional district event, the Amazing White Christmas Party held in Maria Paz Royale Garden Resort in San Pablo City, with three other Rotarians… … last December 17th, the club held the traditional Christmas Party 2021, both in-person attendance and virtually… stay well and be safe during pandemic… continue to observe health safety protocols by (1) wearing face mask; (2) washing hands; and (3) observing social distancing… take care!

Rotary Supports Covid Vaccination Campaign

On November 24, 2021, South Africa reported the identification of a new SARS-CoV-2 variant, “B.1.1.529”, to the World Health Organization (WHO). B.1.1.529 was first detected in specimens collected on November 11, 2021 in Botswana and on November 14, 2021 in South Africa. WHO named the B.1.1.529 Omicron and classified it as a Variant of Concern (VOC).

Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to protect people from life-threatening and preventable diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted life-saving vaccine campaigns. As a result, there is a growing risk of resurgence of vaccine preventable infections including polio, measles, and tuberculosis. PROTECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS, BE VACCINATED!
