Rotakids’ “Trick-or-Treat”
ABC’s of Rotary: Membership in Rotary
Meet our New Member: Vicky Fababier
What’s inside… is an old name of Batangas Province during the Spanish era and denotes several distinct styles, techniques and forms in music and dance originating in the large areas used by early Spanish chronicles centering around what is known as Batangas RI D-3820 / Batangas City, Philippines / # 16943 / March 17, 1950 -ssue 13 / November 1-15, 2022 / RY 2022-2023

Trick-or-treat is a traditional Halloween custom for children and adults in some countries. In the evening before All Saints' Day (November 1st), children in costumes travel from house to house, asking for treats with the phrase "trick or treat". The "treat" is usually some form of candy, although in some culture, money is given instead. The "trick" refers to a threat, usually idle, to perform mischief on the homeowner(s) or their property if no treat is given. Trick-or-treat usually occurs on the evening of October 31st. Some homeowners signal that they are willing to hand out treats by putting up Halloween decorations outside their doors; others simply leave treats available on their porches for the children to take freely. Houses may also leave their porch light on as a universal indicator that they have candy.

Rotarian’s Humor Monger

The RotaKids of Batangas, under the genuine service leadership of President Andrea Kobe Balina, participated actively in the 3rd edition of the Park N’ Treat last November 4, 2022. The event is a semi faceto-face innovative activity for the Halloween where the Rotarians dressed in Halloween costume meet the Rotakids with the same attire for the “trick-or-treat.”

Rotarian’s Words of Wisdom

ABC’s of Rotary

Membership in Rotary International

If you asked a Rotarian if he or she belonged to Rotary International, the individual probably would look puzzled and answer, “Of course I’m a member of Rotary International.” But in this instance, the confident Rotarian would be technically wrong. No Rotarian can be a member of Rotary International! The explanation of this apparent contradiction is simple. The constitutional documents of RI state that membership in Rotary International is limited to Rotary clubs. More than 31,000 Rotary clubs belong to the organization we call Rotary International. A Rotary club is composed of persons with the appropriate qualifications of good character and reputation and a business or professional classification and who serve in an executive or managerial capacity. “The Rotarian belongs to a club the club belongs to Rotary International” . This technical distinction is not obvious or even known to most Rotarians and seldom does it create any problems or complications. It does explain, however, why the Rotary International Board of Directors places expectations upon and extends privileges to Rotary clubs, rather than to individual Rotarians. If someone asks if you belong to Rotary International, your most accurate answer would be, “No, I belong to a Rotary club?’ But it is doubtful anyone would understand the difference, or, in fact, would really care.

Captain “MANUEL DIMALUPIG”

MEET OUR NEW MEMBER VICTORIA FABABIER

Virtually, all membership in Rotary is based upon a “classification.” Basically, a Rotary Classification describes the distinct and recognized business or professional service that the Rotarian renders to community. Each new member of Rotary will be asked to give a "classification talk" after they have been in Rotary for 1 - 6 months.

The Rotary Club of Batangas, under the imaginative leadership of Genuine Service Pres. Arnel Pulla, conducted a Classification Talk during the club’s 9th regularmeeting heldlastOctober 11,2022 at Ka Sebbya Restaurant in Barangay Gulod Labac, Batangas City. Rtn Manolo “Noli” B. Ebora, with his moniker “Captain Manuel Dimalupig,” was the designated speaker and he talked about his professional career and long-time overseasworkexperienceasa “Merchant Marine Ship Captain”

PARK N’ TREAT – Season 3

NOVEMBER is ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary International, we tap into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Foundation grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact.

Strong financial oversight, a stellar charity rating, and a unique funding model mean that we make the very most of your contribution. Give generously and become part of Rotary’s life-changing work.

The collective leadership and expertise of our 1.2 million members helps us tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges, locally and globally. We are united by common values and vision for the future as we sharpen our focus with targeted specific causes that will reach communities most in need.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

~ TRF of Rotary International is Rotary’s Charity and Rotarians Charity of Choice ~

The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation, supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. It is registered in the USA as an International Charitable Trust.

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Its motto is simply “Doing Good in the World”.

The Rotary Foundation, established as an endowment fund in 1917, enjoyed modest growth until 1947 when Rotarians made a significant number of contributions in memory of Paul Harris who died in January 1947. That same year The Foundation launched its first program, Graduate Fellowships (today called Ambassadorial Scholarships) sending 18 students abroad to 7 countries. Today, more than 1200 Rotary Scholars are studying abroad every year. Rotary club and Rotarians raise and contribute funds to The Rotary Foundation annually enabling humanitarian work to be done around the globe. Clubs are regularly applying for use of these funds for local and international projects providing access to funding not otherwise achievable given their size.

Today the fund is almost US$1 billion. Its unique funding model provides for a perpetual capital resource which annually funds thousands of club projects all over the world through Rotary District and Global grants.

To help strengthen club efforts and the outcomes of our projects on communities, the Foundation has identified six causes - our "Areas of Focus" - as priorities for funding.

APPRECIATION LETTER FROM THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

In 1917, Rotary International president Arch Klumpf made a donation of $26.50: “It seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world.”

The fund increased slowly until the death in 1947 of Paul Harris, Rotary’s founding father. Memorial gifts poured in, raising the fund to $1.3 million. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) transforms donations into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. Since its founding more than 100 years ago, the foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. Today, the Rotary Foundation has two funds. The Annual Fund invests donations received each year for a three-year period (US$360 million in 2019), using the income to pay operating expenses. The capital is then expended in the fourth year. On the other end, the Endowment Fund holds the capital forever, expending only the investment income each year; $472 million is currently invested. Much of whatisraisedfortheRotaryFoundation comes from individual Rotarians through the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. In 1957, this recognition programwasinstitutedtoacknowledge individualswhocontributed(orwhohad contributions made in their name) US$1,000totheRotaryFoundation.

The DREAM Lives On…

The intense imagination has the extraordinary capacity to shape dreams into reality. And for more than seven (7) decades, the Rotary Club of Batangas has been pursuing a positive approach for the dream of having a “Rotary Center.”

CARING for the BADJAOS

Badjao or Bajau means man of the seas, this tribal group is known as the Sea Gypsies because they move with the wind and the tide on their small houseboats called vintas, they can be found in many coastal settlements and inhabit the waters and shores of the Sulu archipelago. The Badjao are primitive and friendly and they are believed to be world’s most peace-loving people and consider themselves as a non-aggressive tribal community. Conflict with other tribes is often dealt with by fleeing to other places like the sea. Eventually, the sea molded the attitude and appearance of the Badjao, this rough environment and way of living shaped their typical physical features, the bronzecolored hair and dark brown skin clearly distinct them from other tribes. At present, the Badjao are the most marginalized ethnic group and one of the poorest tribes in the Philippines, a Muslim tribe that is shunned by almost everyone, still gypsies, but also named tramps and thieves. For centuries, the Badjao have been a resilient tribal group, they firmly pushed away modernity with both hands, but tossed by modern winds they will have to find ways to maintain their unique lifestyle and culture. The Rotary Club of Batangas, under the imaginative leadership of Genuine Service President Arnel Pulla, conducted ‘Outreach Medical Mission” to 30 Badjao mothers and babies held last November 8, 2022 at the Barangay Hall of Wawa in Barangay Wawa, Batangas City. The said mission involved Family Planning & Breastfeeding taught by 20 nursing students of Batangas State University (BSU), the partner-in-service for

consonance with one of Rotary’s 7 Areas of Focus

this outreach project. The project is in , which is “Maternal & Child Health.”
