RC BATANGAS SUPPORTS ORAL HYGIENE

Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping your mouth clean and disease free. It involves brushing and flossing your teeth as well as visiting your dentist regularly for dental X rays, examinations, and cleanings. Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease and can help you keep your teeth as you get older. Establishing good oral hygiene and dietary habits have been proven to be essential to achieving and maintaining, overall physical and emotional well beingthroughoutlife.

ABC’s of Rotary

The Classification Principle

Virtually, all membership in Rotary is based upon a “classification.” Basically, a classification describes the distinct and recognized business or professional service that the Rotarian renders to society. The principle of Rotary classification is somewhat more specific and precise. In determining the classification of a Rotarian, it is necessary to look at the “principal or recognized business or professional activity of the firm, company, or institution” with which an active member is connected or “that which covers the active member’s principal and recognized business or professional activity.” It should be clearly understood that classifications are determined by activities or services to society rather than by the position held by a particular individual. In other words, if a person is the president of a bank, he or she is not classified as “bank president” but under the classification “banking.” The classification principle also permits businesses and industries to be separated into distinct functions such as manufacturing, distributing, retailing, and servicing. Classifications may also be specified as distinct and independent divisions of a large corporation or university within the club’s territory, such as a school of busi-ness or a school of engineering. The classification principle is a necessary concept in assuring that each Rotary club represents a cross section of the business and professional service in a certain area or community.

RIP Jennifer Jones pledges US$150M for polio eradication

Rotary International President Jennifer Jones appeared on the main stage at the star studded Global Citizen Festival on 24 September to highlight Rotary’s commitment to eradicating polio and announce an additional US$150 million pledge toward that end.

Jones, who spoke in front of 60,000 people in New York City and tens of thousands more online and on TV, noted the state of emergency that the governor of New York state recently declared to combat a resurgence of polio in the region.

Rotary President Jennifer Jones announces on 24 September Rotary's $150 million pledge toward polio eradication efforts at the 2022 Global Citizen Festival in New York City.

Jones stressed that polio is preventable through vaccines and that wild poliovirus is endemic in only two countries; Afghanistan and Pakistan. Although female vaccinators are critical to building relationships with mothers and reaching children in these areas, they sometimes can face harassment or even attacks. Jones talked about the effect of polio vaccinations in some countries being disrupted by COVID 19. She pointed out that in 2021, about 25 million children went without critical immunizations. "The world has beaten back this disease significantly, but we must redouble efforts," Jones said.

The additional funding Jones announced will go to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which said in August that it was seeking new funding commitments for its 2022 26 polio eradication strategy. "We want this to be the start of a massive effort to reach the initiative's US$4.8 billion funding goal," Jones said. Rotary members have been at the center of the worldwide effort to eradicate polio for more than three decades. Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985 and helped found the GPEI in 1988, when there were an estimated 350,000 polio cases across more than 125 countries in one year. Since then, cases have plummeted more than 99.9%, sparing more than 20 million people from paralysis. Rotary has helped immunize nearly 3 billion children against polio, contributed more than US$2.6 billion to global polio eradication efforts, and helped secure more than US$10 billion from donor governments.

The Global Citizen Festival, an annual music celebration, urges world leaders to end extreme poverty, take action on climate change, empower girls and women, and dismantle systematic barriers. This year's Global Citizen Festival, which took place in New York City and in Accra, Ghana, called on global leaders to invest US$600 million into the future of women and girls, narrow the US$10 billion climate change shortfall, and provide US$500 million to help farmers in Africa to respond to the global hunger crisis.

The New York component, hosted by actor and Global Citizen ambassador Priyanka Chopra Jonas, included performances from Metallica, Charlie Puth, Jonas Brothers, Måneskin Mariah Carey, Mickey Guyton, Rosalía, Angelique Kidjo, and Billy Porter. Presenters included celebrities Amber Ruffin, Bill Nye, Connie Britton, Katie Couric, Tamron Hall, Katie Holmes, and more. Global Citizen says that since its first concert in 2012, more than US$41 billion in funding has been dispersed that affected the lives of more than 1.1 billion people.

Jones urged people to get involved: "Global citizens, use your voice help us call on governments, businesses, and other leaders to join us in pledging ambitiously at the World Health Summit in October to end polio forever." Rotary has worked with Global Citizen for a more than decade, primarily regarding the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. At last year's event in Paris, France, Jones announced $97 million pledge for sustainable project. At the 2012 concert in New York City, Rotary General Secretary and CEO John Hewko announced Rotary's $75 million commitment to polio eradication. Rotary and Global Citizen have also connected at Rotary International Conventions, the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meetings, polio advocacy events, and polio funding announcements.

ROTARY

MONTHLY MESSAGE

Recently, Nick and I spent time in Guatemala, where we met wonderful fellow Rotary members and families who unofficially adopted me as “Tía Jennifer.” On the third day, after visiting Patzún in the mountainous western highlands, we set out for Lake Atitlán, which we needed to reach by nightfall. If we took a back road we could get there faster. Locals told us it had just been repaved and assured us, “You’ll have no problem.”

At first, it was a breeze. We wound through misty-green coffee and corn fields covering the hillside like a patchwork quilt. But at a river crossing, we found a bridge washed away. The only way to continue would be to ford the river in our small bus. There were a few tense moments, but we decided to give it a try and, thankfully, we made it across safely. This adventure reminds me of two important truths in Rotary. One, we rely on local, on the ground expertise to do what we do best. And two, sometimes you have to take uncomfortable chances to reach important goals.

Every day, I am honored to learn from our Rotary family. Every lesson is an opportunity to grow, and each story adds a chapter to our collective Imagine Rotary year.

New Honorary Member

P/Col. Pedro Soliba

Rotary International has only two (2) types of membership, “Active” and “Honorary”. Honorary Membership is the highest distinction that a club may bestow and should be conferred only in exceptional cases. Honorary members cannot propose new members to the club or hold office and are exempt from attendance requirements and club dues. Hence, Honorary Membership is used to recognize people who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service and embody Rotary ideals, or those considered friends of Rotary for their support of Rotary's causes.

The Rotary Club of Batangas, under the imaginative leadership of Genuine Service President Arnel Pulla for RY 2022-2023, conferred the qualifications and inducted Police Colonel Pedro D. Soliba as Honorary Member during the 7th regular meeting held last Sept. 30, 2022 at Cadres Grill & Restaurant in Batangas City. P/Col. Soliba was the newly installed provincial director of the Batangas Police Provincial Office (BPPO) replacing outgoing provincial director, P/Col. Glicerio C. Cansilao. P/Col. Soliba, a former regional chief of PNP Maritime Unit and Deputy Regional Director for Operations, was assigned for half of his 30 years in the police service witnessing series of encounters and culture of violence in the Muslim areas and most of those sensational crimes were solved under his watch. He stressed to put emphasis on the peace and security framework of the current PNP Chief, P/Brig. Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, “MKK=K” which stands for “Malasakit, Kaayusan, Kapayapaan tungo sa Kaunlaran.”
