BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT: A SURVIVOR’S GRATITUDE For the past two years, Doolandella couple Nguyen Dang and wife Diamond Tran have hosted a very special celebration called the Thank You Queensland Health party.
I have cheated death a few times before so doing good things for others has been our normal way of life.
It’s a celebration of life and the guests of honour include Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Cancer Care staff. The couple use the celebration to present their annual donation to the RBWH Foundation for cancer research, acutely aware how it helped saved Nguyen’s life. “I have cheated death a few times before so doing good things for others has been our normal way of life,” explained Nguyen. Three years ago, a routine blood test by Nguyen Dang’s GP had delivered a bombshell. He was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. Without treatment, he was weeks from death. Chemotherapy at his local hospital failed to halt the cancer so Nguyen was referred to the RBWH Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit – the largest in Australia.

“Our children all live in the US but came to visit me while I was in the hospital,” said Nguyen. “They mainly wanted to say goodbye for the last time - I did not expect to make it through the process.” In July 2019, Nguyen underwent his bone marrow transplant which relies on sourcing a matching donor. Twelve months later, he received long-awaited news that the transplant had been successful. Nguyen is now in remission but has blood tests and check-ups at RBWH every two months. Each donation to the RBWH Foundation includes an auspicious recognition of Nguyen’s life-saving transplant. The first donation was $10,177, the second was $5,177. The figure of $177 represents the date of Nguyen’s transplant, the 17th of July.
