How Giving Day funds Extraordinary Opportunities

Thanks to the support of our generous donors, last year’s RBWH Foundation Giving Day raised $520,000, making the launch of the inaugural Extraordinary Opportunities grant round possible. The grant round was established to provide financial support for RBWH staff to undertake transformational projects that enhance patient care and the family support experience. 100% of the funds raised from the 2022 Giving Day were distributed as part of the Extraordinary Opportunities grant round.

More than 40 applications were received, with a focus on four key areas including research into Australia’s biggest health concerns, family and patient experience, how to get patients home earlier, and procedural innovation. The successful projects have now been selected and will be announced early in 2023.

Why become a matching donor in 2023

With total investment requests from the Extraordinary Opportunities grant round in 2022 topping $1.2 million, further funding is needed to ensure this vital work continues. Funds raised in 2023 will continue to build on the momentum the grant round established last year, directing dollars where they are most needed. This will raise the profile of RBWH as a world-leading hospital that has helped develop medical breakthroughs and cared for countless generations of Australians.

By becoming a matching donor for the RBWH Foundation Giving Day 2023, you are becoming a grant maker — taking much-needed timely action to help motivate and incentivise others to give.

Your support is vital

Out of the 8,000 health professionals employed at RBWH, over 500 clinician researchers conduct research into patient care and diseases like cancer. Despite our reliance on Australia’s brightest minds, few people realise that sourcing research funding is an ongoing issue.

• Most potentially life-saving research projects do not receive government funding, which means they must be funded by non-government organisations including not-for-profit organisations such as the RBWH Foundation

• 55% of researchers must resubmit for finance as often as every 12 months.

By becoming a RBWH Foundation Giving Day matching donor, you will be funding patient care projects and life-saving research that would likely not proceed without your contribution. All donations from individual givers, no matter how small, are tax deductible and will be doubled as a direct result of your support.

The RBWH Foundation is the charity that supports Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH), helping to fund advances in patient care and life-saving research. We exist to connect those who wish to give with the most potent opportunities to make a difference, now and in the future.

Our connection with RBWH inspires us. Queensland’s largest hospital has a global reputation for excellence and world-leading discoveries that result in innovations and improvements in patient care.

In an average year RBWH achieves:

• 1,100,000 episodes of health care

• 90,000 emergency & trauma assessments

• Over 27,000 surgeries

• More than 200,000 cancer treatments, consultations & admissions

• Over 220 clinical research trials
