Biofabrication is a new medical f rontier pioneering personalised medicine through 3D printing, scanning and modelling of medical devices, bone, cartilage and tissue. In February 2021, the RBWH Foundation played a signif icant role in this health revolution with a historical $5-million-dollar contribution to the Herston Biofabrication Institute (HBI). HBI Clinical Director Dr Michael Wagels said the new facility would allow for greater and more advanced patient care. “We’re looking at everything from 3D printed implants for defects to 3D bioprinting for skin regeneration as an alternative to donor skin in burns patients,” Dr Wagels said.
WAYS TO DONATE rbwhfoundation.com.au
The state-of-the-art facility is the only one of its kind in Australia, with a focus on key areas including orthopaedics, burns and skin, vascular, urology, cancer care, craniofacial, and anaesthesia and intensive care. The contribution is the largest in the RBWH Foundation’s history and was made possible only by the incredible and ongoing generosity of private individuals, corporations and the public, through campaigns such as RBWH Giving Day. There are over 30 projects underway across seven key clinical streams, which means researchers and clinicians can combine efforts under one roof to advance results for Queensland patients.
