I've written numerous articles about fishing including those about the Mt. Fork, and, at the risk of giving away a prime fishing location, I'm writing yet another Mt. Fork river fishing story.

The tactic and technique used in this fish story can be attributed to the knowledge of one man: Terry. I don't even know Terry's last name, I learned a few years back that he'd passed away. However, the advice he gave to me one float trip has stuck with me always. While on the shuttle ride to the river during this particular trip I was talking fish with Terry, our host. While expressing my excitement to fish for smallmouth, trout and the other popular game fish of the Mt. Fork, Terry suggested I fish the shoals for a little different type of fish.

The Tactic

This method is a form of sight fishing. Much like the fly fisherman that target bone fish in the tropical flats, this tactic is about getting the bait right in front of the fish. Shoals typically form right before faster moving water. The river widens and shallows and here you'll see fish feeding. Mostly you'll find drum, suckers, carp, and catfish, all which put up a big fight on light tackle. The trick to really exploiting this type of fishing is the light tackle. I generally use an ultra light spinning rod. Once you see a fish you would like to fight, throw your bait upstream from it and let it drift naturally to the fish. Depending on the species, this is where it can get tricky!

The Technique

If it's a hard fighting bony fish like a carp or sucker you're targeting, be prepared to have some patience. On a busy Saturday (bank to bank canoes, kayaks and tubes), I usually only manage to land two or three fish, mostly drum and catfish, but the prize for me on these shoals is huge sucker fish. Suckers and carp will mouth the bait for a long time before committing to it. This is why smaller hooks and light line are useful. Again this is sight fishing so being able to watch the fish actually take

the bait helps, but with carp and suckers they never truly "take the bait." With these species, once the line is slack and bait is gone, a solid vertical hook-set will generally do the trick. Even then it's hard to hook up with these guys. This past month I tried and tried to get a solid hook set with a 10 lb., plus fish but with no luck. Perhaps the hardest technique to get down when shucking on shoals is getting hooked up before the next boat or tube cruises over your target fish. Popular rivers like the Mt. Fork and Illinois are extremely busy on the weekends which make it challenging for anglers.

What You'll Need

This method of fishing doesn't require much tackle. What you need is quality fishing line that is lighter in poundage. I don't like using line over 6 lb., test because fish are more particular in super clear water which is typically the conditions when fishing shoals. So, light line can generally increase your hook set. The rig is nothing more than a split shot weight and a small trout hook. I like to set the weight about six inches from the hook to help keep the bait presentation low so it can be thrown with more accuracy. Much like the fly fisherman that target bone fish in the tropical flats this style fishing is about getting the bait right in front of the fish. The main ingredient - and what this method hinges on - is the bait. What is the bait? it's crawfish tails. Not the edible kind you buy at the store, but tails that you've shucked off after catching a crawfish. They don't have to be giant crawfish but big enough to embed a small trout hook. This is what I call "Shucking Tails." The crayfish in it's entirety rarely works for me, but with the tail alone it's a game changer.

The Result

This isn't as glamorous as catching a double digit largemouth out of a shiny bass boat, but it's challenging, exciting, and pretty fast paced. And unlike most fishing I do, it lends itself to catch and release. Happy Fishing!

Biblical Responsibility

The Museum of the Bible has a responsibility to maintain the highest standards of collection care to ensure the longevity of the objects on display and in storage. The Conservation Department is vital to fulfill this responsibility using preventive, interventive and analytical techniques to keep the collection in the best condition possible. The Conservation Lab in OKC needs renovation and the equipment necessary to carry out proper conservation treatments and photo documentation. The needs range from equipment like clean rooms, bookbinding tools and board cutters, to analytical tools such as microscopes and proper photo equipment. By improving our Conservation Department, the Museum of the Bible will be able to provide excellent collections care and will greatly improve the possibilities for research, leading to increased understanding of collections materials. Currently, there is not enough equipment or supplies to adequately house some items of the collection needing special environmental conditions. By investing in the Conservation Department, donors help the Museum fulfill its responsibility to collections care. The labs will become destinations for VIP guests and other conservation professionals. Proper storage in conservation labs also provides a rich source of material for potential exhibits, showing museum visitors the inner workings of maintaining a collection and opportunities to take traveling exhibitions to churches or other locations across Oklahoma and the United States.

Feed Your Cows Without All The Waste

Looking to increase efficiency in your feeding operation?

Read why many producers are now using bale processors.

During the winter, a pregnant 1200-lb beef cow typically consumes 2-3 percent of her body weight in dry matter every day to feed herself and grow her calf. That’s 24-36 pounds a day on an “as fed basis” – every day. Or roughly, 1-1,000-1,100 pound bale of hay a month. How does that project over a 50-cow herd operation? That’s 1500 pounds of forage fed daily or 90 tons during a 120-day time frame. Total projected cost at $80/ton? $7,200. What’s missing in this equation?

The Waste

Depending on your harvesting, storage and feeding techniques, as much as 40 to 50 percent of the nutrients in your round bales could be wasted. Using the example above, that amounts to 45 tons of additional forage for every 90 tons your cows actually consume. At that rate, you and your cows could potentially blow through another $3,600 in forage costs.

If feed represents the largest single cost – up to 60 percent of your total cost – in a cow-calf enterprise, how much hay are you and your cows using each day during the feeding season? And how much is actually being consumed? Perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate the waste and efficiencies of your bale feeding system. Here are a few ways to reduce hay waste, improve your operating efficiencies and likely save money.

It Starts When You're Harvesting

Make sure you bale grasses and legumes when crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) are at their peak levels.

According to University of Missouri forage specialist Robert Kallenbach, peak quality fescue/clover hay may have CP of 18 percent and TDN in the 60th percentile. If harvest of fescue/clover hay is delayed until seed heads mature, CP may drop to 7 percent and TDN may fall into the low 5th percentile. As a result, cows may need added supplements to maintain body condition.

A recent study by North Dakota State Univer-

sity‡ estimates dry matter losses for hay average 28 percent – and range from 5 to 61 percent – depending on how hay is stored. Covering round bales stored outside reduced dry matter losses to 13 percent, and losses were just 5 percent on bales stored inside.

Thus, a barn is your first choice, although not always economically practical. Hay sheds are a good alternative because you can build up the floor with gravel for good drainage, keeping the entire haystack dry.

Don't have a barn or any type of structure to shelter your hay? Create a well-drained area using gravel or wooden pallets. Then stack the bales strategically to allow water to be diverted away from the storage area by covering the bales with tarps.

Another study conducted by the University of Tennessee reported the following results using different storage methods:

• Stored on the ground; no cover -- 37% loss

• Stored on the ground; covered -- 29% loss

• Stored on tires; no cover -- 29% loss

• Stored on tires; covered -- 8% loss

• Netwrapped; stored on ground; no cover -- 19% loss

• Stored in the barn -- 6% loss

Process Your Bales

Looking to increase the efficiency in your feeding operation? Many cow-calf producers are now using bale processors in their feeding operations simply because it allows them to maximize hay supplies, reduce waste, and eliminate a lot of the issues they’ve had in the past with bale rings.

If you process hay on a daily basis (even if you are processing into a windrow in open range on the ground), you can effectively limit intake and reduce hay losses. At the same time, all your cows get an equal opportunity at feeding time because they have greater access compared to feeding with bale rings. Processors also improve the palatability of bales by

GPL Fall 2023 8

eliminating a lot of dust, mold and mildew, so there’s less stress and risk from contaminants and less sorting by cows.

The benefits of using a bale processor also go well beyond hay savings.

According to the University of Missouri Extension Service, for every 900-lb bale fed in your pasture, your cows will return $20 to $30 in nutrients to the soil in the form of fertilizer. Project that return out, based on a herd of 50 cows during a 150-day winter feeding period. It means you can recycle roughly $2,000 worth of fertilizer nutrients (manure) through cows fed on grass hay. And if it’s practical for your operation, you can spread the feeding zones more evenly throughout your pastures.

Bale processors also provide you with a faster, more robust and more effective way to lay down a thick, uniform mat of hay or cornstalks for winter bedding. Owning one allows you to process and mix your own feed based on your schedule, without depending on outside suppliers. From a time and labor saving perspective, that is likely a huge benefit.

Bale processors with multiple cutting stages – such as the Final Cut™ FPX9000 bale processor from Vermeer – can reduce the size of processed hay down to an average cut length of 1-1/4" to 4". This creates the optimum material size for digestibility and efficiency in the cow’s rumen and it enables you to produce a piece of your total mixed ration feed, or process hay into feed bunks along with other grains or supplements.

When selecting a bale processor for your operation, be sure it provides the versatility you’re look-

ing for – the ability to process everything from high moisture silage to cornstalks, including round bales or square bales; the flexibility to perform in all types of situations, from laying down windrows and bunk feeding to blowing bedding into shelters or forage into storage bunkers; and right-sizing hay material for total mixed rations.

Manage Your Feeding Environment

When cows are fed a limited amount of hay on a daily basis (or even on an every-other-day basis), you can process your bales into neatly formed windrows on frozen ground because the cattle will be less inclined to trample, soil and waste the hay.

Feed bales that have been stored outside first, then feed those that have been stored inside. Why? Because cattle fed higher-quality hay early in the season will often refuse poor-quality hay later on.

Feed hay in well-drained areas. If you intend to feed hay in a single location all winter, do it on crushed gravel or concrete to help minimize the mud and manure and to prevent contamination of the cows’ udders and safeguard the health of the nursing calves. Another option is to move hay-feeding areas around the farm to minimize the damage to any one area of the pasture.

At Great Plains Kubota, we are pleased to provide Vermeer equipment to better serve our customers. If processing your hay for winter feeding is something you would like to consider, give one of our GP Sales Pros a call. They would love to serve you with these products.

"PREG-Testing" Your Cows

Since reproduction is the #1 driver of profitability for cow-calf operations, determining if your cows are pregnant or not is crucial to all cow-calf operations. Keeping a cow that is open is very costly with total annual cost ($800-900) for most operations. By not pulling the bulls, it will spread out the calf crop and will ultimately decrease the value of the calf crop by not being able to market them in larger groups. Also, it will spread out your window for having calves, making it more costly through increased labor, fuel, etc.

An additional benefit might be finding a few more open cows which could signal a health issue that could be solved sooner than later.

In other words, it gives you the opportunity to determine your Pregnancy % per Exposed Cow. If your operation is not 90%+ in this number, then further analysis needs to take place. This would be good time to improve your reproduction rate with calf prices to this level. To do that, operations need to pregnancy test their cows.

The methods for pregnancy testing include rectal palpation, ultrasound and blood tests. Today, more veterinarians are using ultrasound rather than palpation, because it is easier and they can detect pregnancy earlier (as early as 28 days)

In comparing the three methods, ultrasound is the most accurate and you get more information from it or palpation than with blood tests. The blood test only tells whether a cow is pregnant or not and has the potential to give some false positives

There are two ways to do ultrasound—with the traditional arm-in rectal probed, or the newer extension-arm probe that eliminates the need for inserting an arm into every cows. The advantage to the extension-arm unit is that it’s much easier on the person doing the pregnancy testing.

With a veterinarian shortage in several areas, many ranches have the staff trained for preg-testing cows and that can be very helpful when it comes to scheduling. It gives the operation much more flexibility, especially if the operation has multiple herds to process.

If a veterinarian is not available, it might be possible to check with larger operations to see if they had someone that could help you out with this job. In any event, keeping open cows in this time of high priced cull cows, price of calves, and increased expenses does not make economic sense for cattle operations.

THE KUBOTA LEGACY: A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

The story of Kubota's presence in the North American compact tractor market began in the 1970s. It was a time when the need for versatile, compact utility tractors designed for small-scale farming and landscaping tasks was on the rise. Kubota answered this call with the introduction of the Kubota L200, one of the earliest and most notable models in their lineup. This marked the beginning of Kubota's enduring relationship with compact tractors in North America.

The Kubota L200 was soon succeeded by other models like the Kubota B6000 and B7100, each gaining popularity for their versatility, maneuverability, and unwavering reliability. These early models laid the foundation for Kubota's reputation as a leader in the compact tractor market, a reputation that continues to thrive today.

A COMPREHENSIVE LINEUP FOR EVERY NEED

Fast forward 50 years! Kubota's compact tractor lineup has evolved to meet the diverse needs and preferences of customers. Today, Kubota proudly offers five different series of compact tractors, each tailored to tackle a range of tasks.

1. B01 Series: This series brings simplicity and versatility to even the toughest jobs, making it a favorite among those looking for practicality.

2. LX Series: Offering the smallest compact tractor with a cab option, the LX series provides comfort and convenience for those who want to work in all weather conditions.

3. Standard L Series: Kubota’s most proven and top-selling series, the Standard L series, is known for its reliability and consistent performance.

4. L60LE Series: An affordable tractor series packed with deluxe features, the L60LE is perfect for those seeking a balance between affordability and functionality.

5. Grand L60 Series: For those who want a compact tractor with all the bells and whistles, the Grand L60 series is the ultimate choice.,

A Timeless Fascination with Tractors

In conclusion, the timeless allure of tractors continues to capture our fascination from childhood onwards, remaining an enduring part of our lives. Kubota's significant presence in the North American compact tractor market, dating back to the introduction of the Kubota L200 in the 1970s, has played a pivotal role in shaping our appreciation for these versatile machines.

As we go about our daily routines, the sight of tractors diligently at work in the fields or along the highways triggers a deep-seated nostalgia. It's a connection that harks back to those cherished moments when we perched in the driver's seat, our imagina-

tions running wild. For many, this enduring connection with tractors sparks the desire to own a Kubota compact tractor of their own, ready to take on any challenge.

And for those eager to turn this dream into reality, look no further than Great Plains Kubota. With our expertise and dedication, Great Plains Kubota can help you transform your tractor dream into a tangible, fulfilling experience.

So, as we continue to spot tractors dotting the landscape around us, that indomitable fascination and curiosity persist, keeping the spirit of tractor enthusiasts alive and well, even as we embrace adulthood.

A Compact Lineup: Kubota introduced its B and L series tractors to the United States in the early 1970s. Today, just as in the 70's Kubota met the demands of consumers with reliable and powerful little tractors. The early L and B models like the L200 or B6000 were a mainstay for small scale farmers and hobbyist. It was these same tractors that would create the foundation of quality and dependability that current compact models still provide customers. Photo Submitted By: Kubota Tractor Corporation

THE BRANDING IRON

Our second annual Support Through Sport FFA Clay Shoot will take place October 12th at The Cedar Gate near Kingfisher, Oklahoma. This shoot is the flag ship event for the Roy Harrelson FFA Tribute Fund developed to provide FFA students with funding for their projects. By helping FFA students "shoot for success," Great Plains Kubota can support the future of agriculture. This fund was also set up as a tribute to Mr. Harrelson and all of the present and past FFA advisors who spend hours and hours affecting the lives of our Oklahoma youth.

On October 12th, FFA teams and corporate sponsors will compete while raising money to support the participating FFA programs and the "Tribute Fund." All funds raised through corporate donations go to the Oklahoma FFA Foundation, investing in FFA students across the state, based on need. Students seeking funding from this will be required to submit an application to be eligible to receive a grant from the Roy Harrelson FFA Tribute Fund

If you have been impacted by a FFA advisor or would just like to give back; please consider making an investment in the future of our young agriculture students by sending your tax deductible donation. If you would like to participate in the annual Support Through Sport FFA Clay Shoot, contact Steve Swigert at sswigert@gpkubota. com or 580-504-7113. State of the Brand

This is my first state of the brand after being handed the reins earlier this year. There are so many things that flood my mind when I think about where we have been, where we are now, and where we are going in the future.

I want to honor the past by being faithful to our current and future customers with the greatest experience possible. The experience is really what matters. If we’ve been fortunate enough for you to try the GP brand once, it’s the experience that will bring you back. Any brand can make the first sale, but the experience is where loyalty is built over time.

There are many factors that play into the customer experience. We strive to have the best equipment brands, backed by stellar parts, service, and rental support after the sale. We work diligently to position, design, and layout our dealerships so that the location benefits the experience. We are constantly aware that our pricing has to be competitive in the market. But even if we get all of these things right, I think there is one “X” factor that makes more difference than the rest combined - and that is the GP employees.

If there’s one thing that I know after being in this industry for 20+ years - this is a relational business. Customers like to do business with people they know and trust. Customers like to do business with people that enjoy what they do and look forward to serving them. It isn’t by accident that we are the “brand that serves.” I believe our employees are the difference maker in retaining your business. I do not say that arrogantly to sound like we are irreplaceable or that we are perfect by any means. In my local community, I like to see familiar faces where I do business. I like to know that the businesses that I frequent are happy to see me and are eager to meet my needs. In short, people make the difference.

One of the responsibilities at the top of my list each day is to focus on our internal organizational health. If you’ll indulge me, I’ll explain this to you in an analogy that I think fits really well. Organizational health, or the lack of it is similar to how the human body functions. As you all know, the human body functions best when all of the internal organs are working together in harmony. The human body is very complex, and when it comes to external appearances - looks can be deceiving. For a time, the inside of your body can be malfunctioning, but the outside appearance remains unchanged. But this can only go on so long before the internal condition is evident on the outside as well. Organizational health is making sure that the internal workings of the business are functioning at 100%, so that customers have an excellent experience. This means that our internal processes, the servant mentality of our employees, and our willingness to work together behind the curtain matters tremendously to our customers.

It’s my job to make sure that the internal aspects of the GP brand are functioning well, so that the external experience for you, our valued customers, continues to be an excellent one. I want each one of our customers to know that I hold myself accountable for how the GP brand functions externally and I am open and willing to hear any constructive criticism of how we can improve to serve you better.

I appreciate the opportunity to serve you.

John Smith: A Lifetime of Service and Dedication

In the heart of Marlow, Oklahoma, nestled within the sweeping landscapes of the plains, lies the JST Ranch, home to John Smith. A loyal customer of Great Plains Duncan for many years, John's story is a testament to the deep-rooted belief in the importance of being a "servant."

As the sun paints the Oklahoma horizon in warm hues, John Smith's connection to the land and his community is palpable. At JST Ranch, he's not just a tractor owner; he's a steward of the earth, a guardian of traditions, and a dedicated servant to all he encounters.

John's connection with Great Plains is more than a business relationship; it's a partnership built on shared values. With Great Plains proudly embracing the motto, "The brand that serves," John's life embodies this principle. It's evident in every role he's

undertaken, from being an undersheriff in Stephens County, to serving as a captain at the Oklahoma Beverage Commission and a police officer in Moore, Oklahoma. John's commitment to public service is a legacy passed down through generations.

His father's military background instilled in him a sense of duty and honor, values that continue to guide his life. In the quiet hours of dawn, as he tends to his ranch and operates his fleet of Kubota equipment, John's actions reflect the essence of service. He sees himself as a servant not just to his community but to the customers who rely on his custom hay baling operation.

"Rooted in Agriculture and Family"

John's love for agriculture was cultivated at a young age. Growing up in West Texas, he witnessed firsthand

GPL Fall 2023 26

how agriculture was an integral part of the "way of life." This early exposure fostered a deep appreciation for the land, its rhythms, and the people who depended on it.

The memories of his childhood in West Texas, where he saw his family tirelessly working the farm, remain etched in his heart. Those days spent in the fields, under the vast Texan sky, were formative. They taught him the values of hard work, dedication, and the profound connection between man and nature. But John's story extends far beyond the fields of his

ranch. He's also a devoted family man with two loving daughters and multiple grandchildren. His unwavering commitment to family values is the driving force behind his actions. John constantly seeks ways to spend quality time with his loved ones.

One of these cherished family traditions is partnering with his grandchildren in showing calves. It's a meaningful bonding experience that transcends generations and nurtures a deep connection to both the land and the animals that inhabit it. John's passion for agriculture is interwoven with the joy of sharing it

with his family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

"The Synergy of Service and Community"

John Smith's journey, one that weaves together service, agriculture, and family, beautifully mirrors the ethos of Great Plains. The synergy between him and the dealership is evident in their shared belief in the power of being a "servant."

As John continues to operate his SVL Track Loader, RTV side by side utility vehicle, tractor, baler, and disc mower, he not only tends to his land, but also nurtures the relationships he's built with his customers. His commitment to service is a source of inspiration, a reminder that true success is not measured by one's possessions but by the positive impact one leaves on the lives of others.

Moreover, John's servant attitude extends beyond the boundaries of his ranch. He built a shop building on his property, a space that serves as a community hub for various events, including family dinner nights for the Marlow football team during the football season. This gesture exemplifies his dedication to his community and his belief in the power of bringing people together.

In celebrating John Smith, the owner of JST Ranch, Great Plains Duncan honors not just a loyal customer but a living embodiment of their mission. His story is a testament to the enduring connection between people, the land, and the belief that being a "servant" is the highest calling. In these vast plains, where the past and present converge, John Smith's legacy shines as brightly as the Oklahoma sun, a beacon of service, agriculture, and family values.
